worship team uh take this moment um and just turn to someone and say I'm glad you're here I'm glad you're here I'm glad you're here awesome well we are glad you're here all right I'm glad we got a church that likes each other I'm glad uh also at this point I'm going to dismiss the the the elementary school kids to go to their class uh it's so awesome that we get to have the elementary age in here just to worship with us see how church works and just to hear a church singing you guys normally I'm up here um I'm playing and singing and I don't get to hear your beautiful voices as much you guys have the most beautiful voice of any church in the area just saying just saying man God is good God is good well hello Church um my name is Ben I am the worship Pastor here at oasis Church uh Pastor I'll take it Pastor EJ he is in Memphis Tennessee uh his friend Isaac is launching his church this weekend so he is down there supporting him I heard they had a great service last night uh their church is called a Church Without Walls and so just be praying for them in this time we are so blessed that we get to support other churches and that we get to just bring the kingdom together we are not just one Church church we support other churches um absolutely absolutely I do want to touch too uh on the Men's breakfast as Alex shared Alex you did amazing on announcements week one good job brother um but I just want to touch on it and say that if if you've been looking for an opportunity to invite someone to church and maybe you're like Sunday mornings might be a little intimidating uh that's a great opportunity to invite someone all right so Saturday 9:00 a.m. uh if you've been a little hesitant it's a great time to invite someone that that maybe doesn't normally come to church us as a staff and Elders we're going to be making breakfast for the men I heard there might be like mini pancakes I think EJ loves mini pancakes I don't know man I don't know he's the pastor so if you eat three of them it's the same as one so uh but we're just going to be talking about what it means to be a man and and so I'm excited for that uh and then also this just in uh next Sunday we we are also doing our potluck yeah as we've been working through uh this series in Acts and just talking about Unity as a church and coming together as a church what what better way than with a potluck with some food uh so us as a church we will bring the main dish but we ask for you to bring aside and uh I just want to share this is not a time to try something new speak at Rachel amen this is not the time to try something new it's time to do your tried and true okay so next Sunday right after church potluck we're excited for that as well and as I shared we are in our series called acts where we are going through the book of AXS so we were very creative we worked hard on that guys so uh but week one uh Pastor EJ he brought that uh his first week was it's all about the kingdom that the kingdom of God can be defined as God's Reign on the earth manifested through his sons and daughters we talked about how Jesus died on the cross he defeated death he rose three days later he was on the earth for 40 more days he then instructed the disciples to go and wait for the gift of the Holy Spirit and then he went up into the sky week two was called prayer is essential to the kingdom we talked about how prayer births Unity how prayer Birds Clarity and how prayer Birds action we talked about the two major Essentials to walking with power and authority in the Kingdom which are prayer and the Holy Spirit acts 1:14 we read they all join together constantly in prayer we have to be a church that prays we have to be a church that is coming together and praying constantly we have to be praying for each other we have to be and I've been seeing God move because we've been praying for each other I've been seeing God move in this place because we have been praying for each other let's continue to do that and then last week Pastor EJ shared the holy spirit is a must the holy spirit is a must we talked about the Holy Spirit coming at Pentecost and we learned that the Holy Spirit restores and unifies the body of Christ and then we learned that the Holy Spirit purifies and empowers the body of Christ and this week the title of my message is called repentance is a must repentance is a must that in the kingdom of God to fully receive the gift of forgiveness for our sins from what Jesus did on the cross entering into a new life with God the Father repentance is a must and what repentance is it's it's first recognizing that we are sinners recognizing that we have a sin problem and then we must recognize and believe that Jesus lived a perfect life so that he could pay the penalty for our sin by dying on the cross we must believe that he rose three days later from the dead and then we must be willing as we recognize our sin to turn away from our sin and turn to god let's pray this morning Jesus thank you for what you did on the cross Jesus I pray that as I'm speaking this morning that you give me the words that you want me to speak nothing more nothing less we make room for what you want to do this morning Holy Spirit and in your name Jesus amen amen well last week as EJ shared the holy spirit is a must uh we read in Acts chapter 2 vers one how the Holy Spirit falls in the upper room people are now declaring God's wonders in languages that they've never spoken before empowered by the Holy Spirit people in the crowd that are witnessing this they're saying I don't I understand what they're saying but I don't understand how I understand that how are people speaking my native language if they're not from where I'm from because during Pentecost people from all around all different areas speaking different languages were coming together for Pentecost and then the Holy Spirit Falls and now people are declaring in languages that never spoken before and people are going well they're not from where I'm from how are are they declaring God's wonders and as P Pastor EJ said last week this was a unifying moment in the Kingdom empowered by the Holy Spirit the Holy Spirit fell God's wonders were shared and God's kingdom was unified and I want to pick it up here because we see two responses from the crowd to this occurrence there were two responses to the same experience verse 12 it reads s amazed and perplexed turn to your neighbor and say I am amazed I'm amazed now turn to your other neighbor your second choice and say I am perplexed I am perplexed verse 12 amazed and perplexed they asked one another what does this mean verse 13 some however made fun of them and said they have had too much wine there were people that were amazed and perplexed they had and they responded with the question what does this mean they came with a heart of amazement and although they didn't quite understand what was happening they were still curious and then there were some whose response was to make fun of them instead of curiosity they criticized they discredited they said that the only explanation for this kind of behavior must be that they're drunk they have had too much much wine have you ever formed a conclusion based off of your own understanding have you ever decided why or what someone else is doing just because you and you only have 10 seconds of information you're go I know why they're doing what they're doing even though you've only had 10 seconds of information I know that some of you the second you get on to I5 you have already come to the conclusion that 90% of the people on the road are terrible drivers and deserve to lose their license amen some of you the people that that some of you believe the people that merge at the last second you believe they don't deserve salvation I know some of you that's okay that's okay you don't deserve salvation either all right salvation is something that was a gift all right I don't deserve it either it's not something you earn it's a gift Praise Jesus but we all make conclusions about situations that we don't fully understand can I can I have some real talk can I get you through some real talk uh my wife and I uh we just had a baby he's s weeks old today yeah uh I know we both did a lot of hard work so Praise Jesus uh love you babe uh but he's seven weeks old he does what babies do and he cries and uh a few days ago I'm sitting on the couch and and he's next to me and he just begins to cry and it's loud and it's in my ear and as he's crying um my wife in the bedroom uh she begins to talk to me say something to me and I'm I can't hear her the baby's crying and I'm thinking why is she talking she can hear the baby crying she's talking I'm frustrated I can't hear what she's saying and just out of anger church I said you know I can't hear you right you know I can't hear you right and she comes out of the bedroom and she says what what's that you know I can't hear you right she says I didn't say anything oof what a jerk what a gut punch I must have heard something that I assumed was my wife talking and my response was that I made a conclusion about my wife that was wrong that she chose an inappropriate time to talk to me and me misunderstanding and more importantly my response to me misunderstanding I missed out on an opportunity to ask a question to be curious what' you say honey what was that and instead I made up my mind based on my own understanding and I missed out it did give me an opportunity to apologize right to repent but I caused division because of my response to my misunderstanding and this was the posture of the people in Acts 2 the crowd where they have discredited and they have missed out on the moment because of their response to a misunderstanding they formed a conclusion based off of the fact that they did not recognize what was happening they misunderstood so they made fun and how often do we discredit what God is is doing because we don't recognize what is happening how often do because we just don't understand our circumstance how often are we leaning on our own understanding of a situation because we don't recognize what's happening or because of what God is doing and if you believe that once you become a Christian you will Now understand every situation that happens to you that's not my experience at least in fact the longer that I've been walking with the Lord the more I have found myself in situation where from my perspective it doesn't make sense but I've learned that when I find myself in a place of being perplexed where it doesn't make sense instead of trying to make sense from my own understanding I've I've learned I'm getting better I'm getting better I'm learning to come to the Lord and say okay God what are you doing God help me understand God most importantly what do you want me to do in this situation God what do do you want me to do in this season I will make room for what you are doing what do you want me to do Lord I don't understand what does this mean verse 12 amazed and perplexed they asked one another what does this mean some however made fun of them and said they have had too much wine verse 14 then Peter stood up with the 11 raised his voice and addressed the crowd we've seen the crowd's response now I want to see Peter's response to the response verse 14 then Peter stood up with the 11 raised his voice and addressed the crowd fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem let me explain this to you listen carefully to what I say these people are not drunk as you suppose it's only 9 in the morning this isn't Margaritaville it's not 5:00 somewhere Moses have not been invented yet it they are not drunk and on a festival day such as Pentecost Jews would not break their fast until 10:00 so it was highly unlikely that anyone would be drunk this early in the morning verse 15 these people are not drunk as you suppose it's only 9 in the morning then Peter says no this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel and I want to pause here because Peter's response is very interesting to me it says then Peter stood up with the 11 raised his voice and addressed the crowd and it's interesting to me because see if you know Peter you know Peter had a a big personality okay they called him Peter the personality okay no one called him that I just made that up maybe we can get some started I don't know but Peter he he had a big personality and through Peter's story we can see times that Peter uh he acts on impulse there are times in Peter's story that we see him act on emotion there's times that we see Peter's humanness come through his actions this is the Peter that was willing to jump out of the boat once he knew Jesus was walking on water he was ready to go and walk with him on water this is the same Peter that when soldiers came to arrest Jesus Peter's jumping out to defend Cuts an ear off of a soldier this is the same Peter that tells Jesus even if I have to die I will never disown you and then the evening that Jesus is being crucified there are three encounters where Peter ever denies knowing Jesus or ever being his disciple and so for Peter to stand up and raise his voice that wasn't anything new to Peter for him to stand up and raise his voice but now his purpose for doing so had changed he's no longer raising his voice out of impulse or out of emotion no Peter standing up and raising his voice from the authority and power of the Holy Spirit and what Peter begins to say he begins to teach then Peter stood up with the 11 raised his voice and addressed the crowd fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem let me explain this to you listen carefully to what I say these people are not drunk as you suppose it's only 9 in the morning no this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel and and real quick Joel was an Old Testament prophet and so it might seem unusual to share a text from an Old Testament Prophet to a circumstance that just occurred but what Joel had written about 500 700 years earlier was partly a prophetic message about what had just happened and it's also believed that a majority of the people that Peter was addressing knew the text that he was about to teach and uh respected it as well and so Peter shares no this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel in the last days God says I will pour out my spirit on all people your sons and daughters will prophesy your young men will see Visions your old men will dream dreams even on my servants both men and women I will pour out my spirit in those days and they will prophesy EJ he he shared last week that in the Old Testament the outpouring of the Holy Spirit was largely reserved for the spiritual and national leaders of Israel he gave examples like David uh Samson of Gideon and in the Old Testament the Holy Spirit was largely reserved for a select few but Peter through Joel's prophetic word is teaching how now someone say now now under the New Covenant through what Jesus did on the cross the authority of the holy spirit is for All Flesh all who come under the New Covenant now every believer is Anointed to be a priest under God the holy spirit is not just for pastors he is for everyone the holy spirit is not just for EJ he is for everyone the holy spirit is not just for me he is for everyone the holy spirit is not just for the people on this platform he is for everyone he's not just for older people you've been a Christian 10 years here's your Holy Spirit card no that's not how it works he is for everyone he is for men he is for women he is for everyone he is for everyone amen and Peter through the prophetic message of Joel teaches this to the questioning crowd he's teaching this that the holy spirit is for everyone and and then Peter shifts he shifts from teaching the crowd what they had just witnessed which is the holy spirit falling to teaching how it happened he begins to share the events that had led up to what they had just experienced and again through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit Peter continues to teach and this is verse 22 he says fellow Israelites listen to this Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by Miracles wonders and signs which God did among you through him as you yourselves know this man was handed over to you by God's deliberate plan and forn knowledge and you with the help of wicked men put him to death by nailing him to the Cross but God raised him from the dead freeing him from the agony of death because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him moving to verse 32 God has raised this Jesus to life and we are all Witnesses of it exalted to the right hand of God he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear verse 36 therefore let all Israel be assured of this God has made this Jesus whom you crucified both Lord and Messiah Peter shares that Jesus was a man who did Miracles and Wonders by the power of God that many in the and he says many of you in the crowd were witnesses to it and then Peter shares to the crowd that the same Jesus that did Miracles and wonders was handed over to them and that with the help of wicked men Peter tells them they nailed him to a cross and we do have reason to believe that some of the people in the crowd were Witnesses of Jesus's crucifixion there could have even been some people in the crowd that were the ones yelling crucify him then Peter shares that God raised Jesus to life and that they had witnessed it that Jesus had received the promised Holy Spirit and that the Holy Spirit was now poured out and that they had just witnessed that and then verse 37 it says when the people heard this they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other Apostles Brothers what shall we do worship team you can come up at this point when the people heard this they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other Apostles Brothers what shall we do Peter had just shared that they killed the king and cut to the heart the crowd realiz izes the consequence of killing the King and their response is Brothers what shall we do what do we do what do we do now it wasn't just the sins of the people yelling crucify him that killed Jesus it wasn't just the sin of the crowd that killed Jesus it was also my sin that put him on the cross true it was our sin that put him on the cross it's it's the lies we've told it's the times we've been disobedient when we know what we're supposed to do it's the hidden addictions it's the gossip it's the anger it's the anger that pours out those are some of the sins that have put Jesus on the cross it was Peter sin Peter knew what it was like to be cut to the heart if you remember I shared Peter said to Jesus even if I have to die with you I will never disown you well the verse right before that Jesus says this very night before the rooster crows you will disown me three times and that night right after Peter disowns ever knowing Jesus he hears a rooster crow and it says that after Peter heard that he went outside and wept bitterly he he Peter in that moment he was cut to the heart from his sin but I want to tell you the story doesn't end there after Jesus rose in John chapter 21 Jesus reinstates Peter there's Redemption for Peter there's reconciliation with Jesus and Peter because of Peter's repentance and although when we come face to face with our sin we can weep bitterly I want to tell you the story doesn't stop there that's right that's true when you recognize your need for a savior it cuts you to the heart but your story doesn't end there and the crowd they are cut to the heart and they say to Peter what should we do what shall we do and Peter understanding the moment he understands the weight Peter having been cut to the heart but recognizing the Redemption that Jesus brings his response in verse 38 he replies repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the Forgiveness of your sins and you will receive the gift of the holy spirit in verse 41 says those who accepted his message were baptized and about about 3,000 were added to their number that day Jesus didn't die for the sins just die for the sins of those who crucified him Jesus didn't just die for the sins of the crowd Jesus didn't just die for the sins up to that point of his crucifixion he died for all of our sin for all of mankind he died for my sin he died for your sin and in the same way Peter was reinstated after his repentance we are reinstated after our repentance even though it was my sin that put him on the cross where there is repentance there is forgiveness repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the Forgiveness of your sins and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit when we finally are at a place of I recognize my sin I recognize my failure I recognize I can't do it without a savior I'm cut to the heart what do I do the answer that Peter gives the crowd is the same answer for us to repent to First recognize that we are sinners that I have a sin problem that Jesus I recognize that you died for my sin and rose again defeating death and Jesus I want a relationship with you and then turning away from our sin and turning to God and his plan for us and this morning if you are wanting to do that prayer I want I want to pray with you this morning if that is you I want to pray with you this morning Jesus thank you for what you did on the cross Lord Jesus I recognize my sin I recognize I've failed and that in my sin Lord you died on the cross for me I recognize that you died on the cross for my sin Jesus I recognize that you raised three days that you were raised three days later from the dead in Jesus I turn away from my sin I repent and Turn to You Jesus I recognize that your salvation is a gift I recognize it is a gift it is not something that I can earn that none of my works or anything I can do there is nothing I can do to earn it Jesus you have given it as a gift and I recognize that this morning Jesus we repent this morning morning Jesus Jesus thank you for what you're doing in this room Holy Spirit holy spirit thank you we praise you Jesus this morning if you prayed that I want to chat with you I'd love to talk with you I'd love to celebrate
