kumnick that's what I look at to with mafa and that identity they established when he was in the game last year you know clubm didn't have the experience he got as as the season went on and Shipley they moved him around all over the place they didn't have an identity when mafa was in the game the offensive line knew he was getting the ball and there was a mindset the guy is a punishing Runner I expect him to get the ball a bunch of times and we haven't even mentioned Georgia but Clemson needs a jump start to this game they have to start fast if they want to be in this game because we know what Georgia brings to the table with Carson Beck in that offense so I'm going to double down on what Desmond said about the receivers I think that unit has been Clemson's weakest link as they've gone from Elite to just very good so I want to see that whole unit Antonio Williams back from injury Wesco coming in as a five star do they have Mike Williams do they have these they had freak shows at that position they had the best unit in the country and they had mediocre ACC units they need that unit elevated I think they have the best pieces they've had in the last few years excited to see them against that Georgia secondary great a great test George is excited too some fresh meat out there the perimeter and that's what I'm wondering guys how much of a chip on their shoulder does Georgia have after what happened last year with them being on the outside looking in I mean just look at who their head coaches he W up with it so yeah it's there's I mean Clemson's got to love being the underdog and playing that role you know they don't get to do him often but georg's got plenty to prove as you know they lost out of the playoff you know beat Florida State didn't get any credit for it trophy is so special for each and every last one of those guys that goes there and you know not only plays football but that is serving our country and doing what they can do for our freedoms so for them to have the opportunity to go out and fight for something something that means so much it's important and it's a feel-good story not just for them but for me too because I love seeing them battle out there yeah and this is what makes college football so unique you know the rivalries there there's always a talking point but when you have a rivalry and it involves a a trophy it makes it that much sweeter because you get chance to hold this Monumental trophy for at least a year you can contr the opposing teams you've beat for least at least a year here so I think this is something about college football that makes all of us Big Time fans of the sport because the rivalries that have been involved in college football for such a long time but then when I can touch the trophy and I can hold it close to my heart and soul and I can take a picture and smile and send it to you on social media that's it we are the big dogs this year okay wait bmax so let's talk about this trophy right who was your pick this year to win the cic let's go run it back with army I'm taking Army because I think what we're going to see with this ball Club this year is getting back to the bread and butter running the football when they run the football they're very very difficult team to beat not to mention how how consistent their defense has been they swarm to the football very very opportunistic so I like what army is bringing back to the fold with this year's team and I think they will have chemistry from start to finish I'm taking Army you said it you hit the nail on the head when you said the Run game okay the quarterback's back under Center in this triple option once again and they had a stretch during the season where they had six games okay and and and and those six games they had less than 100 yards rushing those four games were losses at the end of the season they went on an absolute Terror they got the balance right between Blake Horvath Kanye Udo uh Tyrell Robinson Dava fana they got those guys going and they got the they were started playing complimentary football again they averaged 243 yards down the stretch in those four games all wins at the end of the season I think that Nate Woody is an excellent defense coordinator running that balance three4 that gives other quarterbacks fits I think they're playing complimentary football I think they're back I don't think they're back you know I know to all that just gave a whole lot right there I don't think they're back you know a team that is going to be playing with a chip on their shoulders Air Force Air Force had a great year last year and I know there is no zackaria Emanuel Michelle some of the guys you just mentioned walking through Z Daniels Brad Roberts go on what they do have is they have a great coaching staff and they got a great young running back who I think is probably going to be one of the top not just players amongst the servers academies but top players in the country this year and that's running back Dylan Carson I think they're going to be able to lean on him a lot more he reminds me of that Brad Robert style the running back last year when he did play average six yards a carry down a year in which he nearly broke a thousand yards on the ground and let the team in rushing touch Downs with seven he's hoping to utilize his legs even more this year to help the Black Knights get back to what they do best Jeff monin Squad finished with over 280 yards on the ground in both 2021 and 22 but fell to 208 last year with the scoring falling off as well that was in direct correlation with the team trying to play from the shotgun in 2023 seems like they'll go back under Center more this year which certainly plays for their strength being yeah I think so I mean when you're lining up five yards deep to give the running back the ball to try to get two yards you had a disadvantage already and then when you look at Who Army is as a football team and who they always been just a physical dominant presence they got cute tried to run this shotgun system to run their variations as offense now they're saying the heck with it and we're coming at you you're going to know who we are and understand what we're going to run I think that's going to Bow well for them moving forward going back to the basics man just going back under Center I think it it basically empowers them in a way that they feel comfortable with it's what they've done for years and we saw the direct correlation that you mentioned Kiana earlier I mean the the the rushing yards went down they weren't as effective they weren't as effective until they got themselves together and found some continuity at the end of the season where they averaged about 243 that last stretch of four games but other than that they weren't running the ball they didn't look like Army so yeah they're back being under Center is definitely better and I think this offense is going to really be successful tonight being back under Center offensive coordinators are ego Centric sometimes they try to feed their ego right we see it all the time we watch ball games run a play on first down you get six yards the first thing the next play is they throw the football you should run it so that's what we kind of saw with army last year trying to change up their system no get back to the bread and butter under the center running downhill against these opposing defenses and having successful opportunities and get into positions to score points and win ball games so I think this should be fine I'm happy to hear the under Center because it didn't look right seeing Army and so much shotgun a year ago uh speaking about getting back to your bread and butter how about some Army keys for not only tonight but this season being he starts you know I think the key for the season is always going to be Bryson Dy as long as he's there you know the guy just goes out plays phenomenal week in week out last year over 900 yd through the air over 900 ydd on the ground averaging over four yards a carry seven rushing touchdowns and we keep talking about them being under Center but for a reason because it allows them to get to their blocks quicker offensive line don't have to hold blocks longer underneath Center or as they do underneath Center because they can just fire off the ball and get after him quickly Bryson Dy is going to have a great year especially in this new offense well my guy is guy I believe we'll have a great year as well Kanye Udo when you look at what he did last season right the numbers don't lie anytime he saw 10 touches 10 carries in a ball game he averaged around 99 yards with those double digit attempts anytime he saw less than 10 he averaged around 21 yards numbers do not lie so follow the trend and finding a way to get Kanye at least 10 carries because recent history tells all of us anytime Kanye gets 10 touches he gets almost 100 yards and that is winning football very very simple if it ain't don't fix it simple simple all right well how about Lehi who's a key for them to keep this game tight and potentially maybe pull off that upset Kevin got to go to the ground game Luke Yoder look this young man was a finalist for the Jerry Rice award a year ago which is the best newcomer in the FCS football two-time uh Patriot league rookie of the week he's a tough kid and where's he from bmac he's a under arour All-American out of high school he's got everything you need to play the position on first down a reverse Dion burs the transfer from Purdue where he was the boiler makers top receiver last year it's pretty much a remade off a defense for Temple and they do a heck of a job of just kind of staying at home not getting fooled by the I can gu's pursuing got a fast defense Arnold takes a hit punches in the launch code and connects Jalil faroo inside the 25 of Temple a gain of 47 what you love about this is Arnold reading the field and then standing in there knowing you're going to get hit but delivers an absolute dime that is the definition of throwing a guy open screen to the outside that's Burks his first catch is a sooner this is an offense they love their wide receivers as deep as anybody at wide out yeah that's the strength of their offense underrated running back room the question is the offensive line where they had to replace all five starters from last year can they protect Jackson Arnold on the ground and that is Gavin Sawchuk who finished last season with five straight 100yd games yeah Oklahoma would love to get in the end zone here and put a lot of pressure on temple temple wants to hold to just a field goal attempt right here buckle down play everything in front of the first down marker and come after Jackson Arnold don't allow him to sit back with [Applause] time Arnold using his feet gets a great block on the perimeter and tumbles for a first down a gain of seven that's what we talked about at the top is his ability the mobility of Jackson Arnold it it forces a defense to play 11 on 11 when he can run the ball and pull it down with that type of Mobility boy that's a lot of pressure on a defense and we get her first whistle her first Oklahoma team Andre on offense new offensive coordinator Seth Latrell former Sooners fullback we mentioned the offensive line essentially a new starting quarterback but they've got the guys on the played here they got an outstanding quarterback and the receivers lead the way it appears that Arnold does have the line to gain I mean you're talking about five of the top six returned at receiver and then they bring in Deon Burks from Purdue as a as a uh out of the transfer portal boy they they can throw it around with the best of now today they are without Nick Anderson who was banged up at the end of Camp he's being held out as a precaution and they did lose Jaden Gibson after fie the runner was stopped short of the line G it'll be fourth down and one I do remember a time where Oklahoma had to replace four out of five starters on the offensive line they had all these skill position players GM musberger will remember this too and BYU in the opening game of the season upset the Sooners recruit in the ESPN 300 era and that's saying something when four sooner quarterbacks had won the highs in the last 25 years we're seeing his arm but he loves to run the ball as a youth he played running back for three years for his father Todd who was a running back at wford taught him out to hit the hole so we see the arm you see the legs he's the total pack War number 32 was a running back for two years for the Dickenson Vikings oh boy that time the Jean gets Arnold this is a rebuilt Temple defense they hit the portal hard including Jean who came from FAU yeah he plays with tremendous energy and he's a really good player they are fired up about him being here being at Temple and finishing his career there he wears one of those single digits given to the toughest Temple players the highest honor of the team may be a draw play here third and long that one thrown behind his intended target wanted Roberts the tight end by the punt set up all of this you you you get backed up inside your own 15 the play calling changes a little bit you're a little more protective if you're the offense Temple able to make a couple of plays defensively going to get the ball back with some decent field position here a first punt forced by this Temple defense it's a secondary that imported four players through the portal basically the entire defense is new feel like they're faster I feel like they can compete in their conference Luke elzinga punts Dante Wright lets it bounce and it skips out of bounds near Midfield Temple has amazing representation not only nationally but worldwide eight this roster it's always had the core of that Philly South Jersey representation but they're going worldwide too and it's an amazing accomplishment by Stan in his staff and showing that this game is not just in the United States it's worldwide I'd imagine a higher PDM on those International recruiting trips too keep an eye on Allen he's a speed guy for temple they empty it out screen pass thrown low and that's a loss of two on the play Joe quz Smith so you get your first completion but it's for negative yardage yeah so you go from 0 for five for zero to 1 for six for minus two minus two got to get this offensive unit going and sometimes with early in the season that's that's tough you got so many new players playing together and the offense not having enough work it's tough to get the chemistry to move the football with consistency this is a two- tight end set they started in empty and not much there on the draw play dejon Terry got in the way joez Smith for No Gain maybe a yard third and long now for temple at a drive that started near Midfield yeah he's a transfer from Tennessee but he's the only defensive tackle to start a game last year so they're relatively new on the inside with Jaden Jackson a true freshman starting dck Williams wi Williams inside as well the Terry's in there for him Williams a coveted transfer coming from see you Brock wants right the ball is tipped and it's picked Kai Walker off the deflection [Applause] now it looks like Kendall Dolby tipped the ball and it's just like the tip drill that you run in practice you get a chance to tip it in the air you're hoping one of your teammates is in the area that's exactly what happened excellent job by Dolby to get it in the air this is a talented Oklahoma secondary and the coach has told us Walker was the most consistent Corner throughout camp and this is where I'm going deep again that Sudden Change keep an eye up top for receiver Burks minus 20 turnover margin for temple last year minus two tonight Arnold Under Pressure lost the football it was Jean but there's a flag down maybe a false start if they're stopping it before the ball snapped before the snap FAL start offense number 15 5yd penalty first down Brennan Thompson the receiver ready to get deep anxious got to settle in there big guy it's a transfer from the University of Texas just Flinch just a little bit early kind of surprised they call that usually they out wide they it's got to be that was really close it's got to be obvious screen pass back to Thompson and he can't spin away got right back to the line week one depth chart came out no doubt about it but that gives you a chance to compete in the SEC when you have that type of depth inside along the defensive line Oklahoma has come out and put up 17 the toughest environments at Kyle Field against Texas A&M and his former coach and if you look at their schedule the reason it's a must-win game if they lose this one their people are going to question where are the quality wins coming after week one with a loss already on the record to Texas A&M all right so we're mulling it over on that one another thing that we are keeping our eye on is of course the college football playoff and you you pretty much think okay the SEC and the Big 10 they're good with getting multiple teams in but the ACC and Big 12 who do you have getting two teams in the college football playoff I have the ACC getting two teams in this year and there's some question after week zero the Florida state loss but the depth of the league Miami cam Ward coming in a quarterback explosive players exciting Grays M call it tough winner going to NC State fits Dave's dorr's personality and everyone has said hey Clemson the dynasty it's kind of on the downfall I don't agree with that I think they have a talented team coming back and I'm going to go with Miami and Clem and I think both get in the playoffs from the ACC this year I like that let's go to our third topic and you're mulling it over on this as well cuz as you take a look at the 12 team college football playoff we know the top four are locks from the conference winners but those other eight Spots You're mulling it over on a surprise team two surprise teams that could get in who is it I got to see one Thursday night with Missouri as a surprise team they have offensive Firepower Brady Cooks thrown to Luther bird and Theo Wei some of the best receivers in the country The Talented o line they can run the football but most impressively the defense they lost a lot of guys last year to the NFL but they look sharp defensively the other team Old Miss Lane kein getting over the hump this year he's got his quarterback in Jackson D he has a lot of talented players he's excited about this roster I think both Missouri and Old Miss make the playoffs from the SEC SEC very deep yet again this year the other side of that 12 team college football playoff is of course surprise teams that could be on the outside looking in when it's all set in done who are two surprise teams you think are not going to make it this year yes not the five and six left out you're looking further down I'm going to go with one surprise team left out Alabama kayin dor I think's an excellent hire I think's going to do a great job you already see the transition I think it's been very successful they have a tough schedule new coach transitioning in I think they get left out the other surprise team Michigan TR more in his first year lot of new faces on that roster there's some tough teams in the Big 10 with with Oregon Ohio State Penn State I think the defending national champion gets left out of the college football playoffs mulling it over with Coach Dan Mullen should be called stirring the pot welcome into this college football scoreboard counting you down to kick off here for a second of a double header here on our first week one Friday night in Stanford coming your way in just about 10 minutes looking forward to that one and we have already got things off and rolling two days of college football here throughout our ESPN network you're taking a look at the Cardinal getting ready as I mentioned for their first game in the ACC that happening right here on ESPN but you just saw what happened with Oklahoma as they came out took care of business Joey Galloway coach Dan melan Kelsey rigs with you in the studio for the next few minutes counting you down to kickoff but first let's take a look at what we just saw from Oklahoma and as you said earlier this is what you expect from Oklahoma coming out and taking care of the ball and doing things uh both on offense and defensively really well yeah they created 10 turn I mean six turnovers in this game and I think when you think Oklahoma you want to see what their defense is going to do especially going to the SEC this season can their defense stand up to what they're going to face in that SEC we know it's a physical Rand of football in that League probably a little bit more physical than we've seen Oklahoma the past few years but as far as starting a season they have to be really excited about what their defense did absolutely and and that you know we've seen the offense interesting with Jackson Arnold CU they kind of made the decision he's the future Dylan Gabriel leaves goes to Oregon that was the starter to have him come out and throw four touchdown passes in the first game was really exciting for them and that is going to be a huge thing moving forward his arm and his ability to throw the ball because we know he's a big athlete I I think he ran the ball 11 carries too much for him in a game especially game against Temple that's that's that's almost running him too much but he needs to be an efficient throwing the ball with his arm passing I'd like to see a little bit more balance with the Run game for them moving forward but that defense is why they went out and brought Bren Brett venol in to be the coach so how do you feel about this defense moving forward now this is Temple yeah and Temple's not great yeah uh and and you'll see a lot of teams open up with a team like Temple the game that they should go out and dominate but if you're Oklahoma you're excited because you did everything you wanted to do but is this defense built for moving forward because they have Houston and Tain which games they should win but then they have Tennessee and that'll be the first time we actually get to see how good this defense really is and they'll be tested but you know what they're going to have Jo you know is confidence at that point going into that game you said they played at an extremely high level tonight Houston to latee we say they're better them they get Tennesse at home though and they're going to be playing if they continue like they did creating turnover stopping the Run being physical they're going to play with a Swagger and a confidence about them as they get ready to get into that SEC schedule and that mentality that that that where they've struggled the last couple years and say we've been exposed we haven't been great defense they've heard that now they're going to hear we're pretty good and I think they can build off that confidence they're going to see Houston and tle next as you mentioned and then get their start with the SEC meanwhile let's take a look at some of the head coaches getting their start with the new team and we go to Michigan State where Jonathan Smith is the the head coach there looking forward to seeing what he is able to do took him a little while to get going a big two nothing game here in the second quarter and then Aiden Charles punches it in coach yeah it's kind of really slow start two nothing then they got a couple turnovers coach and it completely flipped this game and they got the offense going it is and you see him right there run the counter great run though they kick it out back stays in the a gap hit at the explosive plays that's what they wanted to have of these explosive plays and show the talent third quarter it's 16 to3 they continue to try hold on to that lead with a minute 23 left it is a six-point lead for Michigan State how about Manny Diaz back in the ACC now at Duke got a transfer quarterback and Malik Murphy he looked pretty good on that one he did and this is another game it's 3 nothing with a minute 14 left in the half you're going against Elon you expected Duke to come out and get off to a better start yeah they started really slow and they got going you have a new quarterback you're trying to feel it out with a new coach they played great defense they they had four sacks in the first quarter getting out after Elon they continue to get after it for the rest of that first half as well and then you see Finding The End Zone again once they got the good offense going and started clicking a little bit better yeah they they know they got to go back to the film room and make some and make some improvements 263 against Elon you expect to be better than that but it was the slow start was the concern that one just went final so it is a win for Manny Diaz in his first game there Michigan state looks like it is going to go final 1610 a win there as well one more game coming your way right here on ESPN and then these guys hanging out with you all day tomorrow
