she needs a big first serve here she's under 20% winning points on her second serve boy suddenly Martinez crabing the alley she wants to hit a forehand on this ball wo he had Chris going the other way Chris was really lucky to get out of that one set point number two Shee West one set to The Wimbledon champion ship finals Chris ever 6'4 in the second second set six games to four one set on Final [Applause] [Music] set Chris is really playing a very patient game is that something well usually she says well I don't have the patience to Rally anymore with those youngsters but she's rallying as much with Martina as she ever rallies with anybody from the Baseline the key to that second set was the fact that ever was able to break nalva in the very first game while Broken Backs he was able to answer and win the set at [Music] 6'4 15 so their 78th meeting goes to the drama of the third set [Applause] 31 good 41 oh that's a good return 14 15 and another 403 well this is what Chris has definitely got to do she's got to keep a stopper on Martina from running away with it on her serve especially it's great that she's won two points being down 40 love because you don't want Martina to gain that little bit of confidence wa so the wins the opening game of the third set the third set and Chris ever serving love one love 50 and Chris knowing well that her opponent and friendly rival neat toova has so much writing on this experience with a chance to moved to the finals and a record opportunity and yet Chris herself with 13 years of at least one grand slam has the right to be selfish see from that point bud there's nothing wrong with Chris Everett's heel that bothered her in Paris no she's in fine shape but as I sit here I think what a wonderful moment this is in tennis history one set here that could change so many things in tennis history if Martina loses of course she loses the shot at the record match winning streak and the shot at the ninth tourn tournament Title Here at wimon which would be a record for Chris to come back for a fourth and after that Stephy gr still is in the final and this is our last point and you can just see the depth they're getting on these shots and look at the preparation boom down the line that was a very confident backand put two jamming serves on the left hip of Martina well she needs to get a few more jamming Zur in there control of the match now can Martina consolidate it but the fact that Chris is relaxed ought to help her because the more tense you are you don't move very well you don't make the right decisions and that'll help her especially in the return of serves oh my work that was a difficult shot for ever you love well it was because Chris actually did not want to hit a backhand volley here she makes a balance four games both players especially Chris when you play Chris you just don't want to hit hard balls hard after each one like that the same Pace you want to mix it up and Chris is playing Martina the same way she throws a soft one in she hits a hard one she throws a lob in and I think that's that's the difference Chris used to just win by hitting hard deep into the corner maybe a sharp angle doesn't work against Martine and she realized that and she's playing very well here new balls well that over an hour delay because of the rain these two women stepped on court just before 2:00 London time now it's just past 5 in the late afternoon on this the last day of June [Music] 31 and we're into the late Innings the final frames where they went hon final date to the winner that play and the volley goes was in the net and she's saying come on one more first serve [Applause] fantastic it was brilliant shot making on both sides Martina just puts it in another gear there Chris it's a great backing look at the touch that is feathery Touch third Deuce after a 40 love start now Martinez shaving the net cord with those sliced back hands and Advantage finally hits one too low and ever with another game point to go five all when you hear that extra grunt where you can really hear Martina grunting on those slices it's because the ball has taken a bad bounce and she's had to adjust and give it that extra o [Applause] I fell over bad all time Point Chris makes an unbelievable lob here she comes in and she tries this drop volley it Loops up a little too high but it takes someone of Martinez speed to run that ball down fantastic [Music] point oh beautiful Point got a good roll on that fall so after The Sensational Point by nebr balova to save game for ever she comes right back undaunted ever little Inside Out forehand right on the line oh it's on the line Martina doesn't agree five all she let it go Russell buris on the Baseline signal good immediately [Applause] you see any Chu you didn't see any Chu so how could it be good if there was no Chu now here it is again it be tough from this angle to tell she went right at Martina good shot you can't tell no this a it's too tough CU he froz her with that point blank forehand at her head fine shot great play because we've seen the whole three sets every time she goes to One Wing or the other Martina makes a great reflex stab falling she said hey I'm going to hit her right in the head this time well let's see if Martina can recover she had a match point and a bit of an argument with umpire Richard Lum did it Jay delou just in the right of your screen her coach well those eyes are narrowing and when she says J Del Louie assistant coach at Southern Methodist Dennis Ralston normally her coach she sent Jay Del Louie to be with her Jay is a left-hander a good practice partner [Applause] now it's ever with a less powerful service game at 56 [Applause] love 15 really adjusting well to some bad bounces you notice how Chris adjusted to that she makes a great play and then Martina adjusts to a m hit down the line and hits [Music] another love well you knew she wasn't going to try another drop Bali got to give Chris credit she went for it that time [Music] you can sense the weight of every shot and now Martina neova has three break points that was the 20th stroke of the rally probably their [Applause] longest Martina looking up at the friends box to see if agreed with a call because they're right on that line and apparently they said yes yes good call in the friends box the third match [Music] point oh oh what a get Martina thought the match was over when she hit that ball she did she hit that ball with so much behind it she thought she put it [Music] away4 watch your reactions after making that Vol and somehow Chris gets to this ball and lobs it back she just closed so close to N Net that just Chris just getting that ball back Match Point number four it's it's out off the net court and wide to the disbelief of Chris ever and has the call been overruled well Gavin eward did not hesitate and the match is over and what an anticlimactic uh Rood of a great semifinal they don't want to stop playing it's clear and with that kind of crowd reaction Martina neova enters the finals and a chance at number [Music] nine and a very solemn Chris Evert and that's what friends are for this another Del the win 61 4675 this is the final point of the match and Chris makes a great get here oh this is pretty close well we're at a bad angle I thought the ball was good but I wear a terrible angle where we're sitting she didn't know until she saw the linesman signal she wasn't sure let's watch the watch the reaction as the two of them uh head off Court see if there's any expression as much as Chris respects and likes nalva she uh she didn't want nalva to win it that way and I'm not sure Martina was all that happy either she she can't really express any Joy it just smothered the whole moment didn't it you can tell from Martina's look that she would have accepted an overrule she did not want to shake hands in that she thought but maybe we'll keep playing 61 [Applause] 4675 to those Americans who believe they can't I you know I was just real surprised that the linesman called it out but you know after thinking about it and it really doesn't matter what I think because I'm not sitting there on the line you know he was just he thought it was was out and he called it out so that's um you know there's nothing I could do about it Bruce did you see him call it out or had you turned away no I you know I I thought it was I was so sure it was good that I I mean I reacted I went like that I was so happy it was deuce and um I was totally unaware that he had called it out and then I looked and I saw Martina like with her hand out like that so um and then I you know I put two and two together and figured out that uh the linman had called it out and you know I don't usually question calls but I mean that was so crucial and um I think that I don't know maybe it was a mixture of hoping and and seeing but I mean I I really did think it was the ball was right in the line because of the hesitancy did you feel the Umpire might be about to over no no I mean once the linesman calls it out um that side of the Court the Umpire very rarely would overrule a call I mean if it's right in front of him he would but as I said before the linesman had the best view you know I didn't have a great view Martina didn't and I can't blame her you know she for getting ready to shake hands you know it wasn't up to her to change the call even if she did think was in so it was you know just one of those it was bad luck for me um and again and it was it was bad luck considering that it the match was so close and it it definitely came down to one one or two points you back next year we'll see I don't know so Chris ever typical of her character a combination of disappointed confused and yet understanding showing her class once again we'll get Martina Nala's reaction when we return test of human Endurance on the tropical island of St Croy Beauty and the Beast on NBC Sports World so the defending Champion Martina neelova wins again as she has the last seven years 47 consecutive match wins here at Wimbledon but none quite so controversial at its end as this one bud Collins's among those who got her reaction today Martina congratulations was match point was that ball in or out it was very close I uh when she first hit it I thought it was going to go in then when it clipped the net and I thought oh it may go out and when it landed I thought it was just out I didn't see any chalk come up but it was very close and I was just hoping that the liesman would call it have you ever been in a scene like that on Match Point the ire seemed paralyzed he was he didn't say anything he didn't say out he didn't say game set and match he he just sat there and and uh that's what I think added to the confusion if he had just been a little more forceful and said the ball was out it was called out game match that's it but he just sort of sat there and didn't say anything was this a weird ending for such a wonderful match it was I mean I wish that the ball was would have been further out so that there would have been no doubt about it uh I should have put the ball away at the point before I got my feet all trampled up and should have put that overhead away that would have ended it right there but as it turned out it was sort of a sour ending I guess but uh you know that's the way it goes whatever you're in the final going for number nine against the German kid grath who is trying to keep a grand slam alive can you do it again I think so I'm uh playing well enough to win I'm definitely uh eager and uh mentally as tough as I've ever been and uh now it's you know this is where you pick the cherries I mean this is this is the time to really enjoy it and um I think I'm going to have a great time playing an incredibly fine match at Center Courts 78 times they've met but there's one shot that both will remember as will all of tennis is it off the line or on the line Martina noova wins in [Music] controversy Center Court out on court 14 a doubles match and one of the competitors Chris Evert a crowd of maybe a couple of hundred at the start but they were packed and screaming at the end as Evert with a veteran Wendy Turnbull rallied from a set down to win that match and Advance into the semifinals but what a day well but a woman most people would give it the tank job after a tough loss on Center Court to sing this like that and Chrissy was [Music] [Music] I [Music] [Music] don't look don't look don't look and don't look and now you may look
