joe biden said to become president in just eight days it is time for our final final final trumponomics report card for the quarter this is where we measure rick newman measures the economy under the president compares it to the six previous president so rick the question is how did he do trump earned a grade of c for the economy uh that he is leaving his successor joe biden so as you pointed out we measure the trump economy we use data from moody's analytics and measure the trump economy on six different metrics uh compared with prior presidents on three of those trump has the worst record of any of the seven presidents we look at going back to jimmy carter in the 1970s uh he's got the worst marks for total employment for exports and for real gdp per capita and that is obviously uh those are developments of the last nine months since the coronavirus layoffs and the pandemic has led to all these business shutdowns but on three other measures he's actually doing remarkably well given the situation on earnings he has the top marks of any of the seven presidents that's average hourly earnings and then on manufacturing employment he is um fifth best out of seven and on the stock market the s p 500 he's also fifth best out of seven so love him or hate him uh donald trump uh you might think he deserves a d or an f on the economy not so he passes if you will with a middling grade of c pure speculation here not database rick but i'm curious do you think history will be kind given the good marks you've just shared with us in totality with this president as he goes out of office definitely not uh history is not going to be kind to president trump i mean there have been many uh presidential historians even before the ransacking of the u.s capitol on january 26th who said they considered trump to be one of the worst presidents if not the worst president in history and i think what happened last week is going to cement him uh in and this week uh it's going to cement him as absolutely the bottom uh he's the only president ever uh to have been impeached twice most likely uh given that the house is probably going to impeach him again uh tomorrow the senate probably won't convict him uh but it's possible they will uh so no the uh the trump economy is not going to be the asterisk at the bottom where uh historians say well he almost tore he trampled on the u.s constitution and almost uh ripped up democracy but the economy could have been worse so therefore he did okay not gonna happen
