5 SURPRISE Kansas City Chiefs Cut Candidates Ft. Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Mecole Hardman & Irv Smith

Intro [Music] glad to have you with us here on the Kansas City Chiefs report Tyler Jones here as we are talking surprise cut candidates for your Kansas City Chiefs I got five players that we should be talking about that are potentially on the chopping block and these are names that are different from what we typically talk about we're not going to go over the usual suspect of the sky Moors cadarius Tony of the world but we do have a very interesting list and we'll explain more coming up in just a moment let's talk about the chief's cap situation here uh before we go any further here the Chiefs are in a good spot when it comes to the cap right now currently with $17.11 million but that money could change very quickly as we know about the extension candidates that are out there when you talk about CED Humphrey and Trey Smith and Nick Bolton among others and I'll say this with these moves that we're going to talk about today you're not going to save a ton of money just about 3.42 million but in the grand scheme of things when we look at this situation of trying to find every dollar you can to pay those guys and then if you're going to make one more big move then every dollar essentially helps that cause so I'll say this let me preface before we go any further and naming these cut candidates I am not saying that any of these guys are going to get cut nor am I recommending that the Chiefs should cut any of these five individuals but all five of these guys are in the discussion it's not a guarantee that they will make the 53 man roster so let's go ahead and set that before you guys come after me uh here on today's show before we reveal this full list of names are you ready for Chiefs football if you are spam C for Chiefs in the comments section I want to see no Stadium today spam C for Chiefs and we'll get started with today's show let's begin with Clyde Clyde EdwardsHelaire Edwards Air the Chiefs running back former first round pick C it's been a rough goal for him in his time with the Kansas City Chiefs uh over the last few seasons the former first round pick out of LSU a national champion with the LSU Tigers and let's be honest here he has shown you absolutely nothing throughout this point in his career he has not even come close to living up to the hype of being a first round pick he's never been a quality starting type running back in the NFL he's barely holding on to be a number two back and going into Camp it seemed pretty obvious that hey he was in the driver's seat to be that number two running back that's what he signed up for but then we've seen a turn of events as of late as Prince has had a very good camp the second year pack out of the University of dlsa and then the Man of Steel uh steel looked very good in the preseason game this past week against the Jags so that leaves the chiefs with some question marks it's not a foregone conclusion at this point that Clyde is going to be the number two back let alone be on the 53 man roster at this point in time the Chiefs might have better option right there internally you're not going to save a ton of money if you decide to move on from Clyde about $343,000 is all you'll save against the cap but depending on how how those guys perform the Chiefs might feel better with those guys as opposed to C at this point in time and it'd be a damn shame if they do have to move on from Clyde being a former first round pick and all the Chiefs have infested what they've done uh given Clyde so many different opportunities here but the truth of the matter is that he's just done nothing at this point and so if the Chiefs ultimately decide that hey this is what we got to do it's a business decision you got to go with the best man I would hate to lose Prince or steel potentially because you kept this guy around if those guys are playing at a high level and outplaying Clyde then you had to do what's best for this team and we'll see how things unfold for the next couple weeks maybe Clyde potentially steps up with these next two preseason games here but we do have a competition over these next couple weeks before we get the roster cut down day should the Chiefs Hardman signed to return to the Chiefs back in June we all know what he did in the Super Bowl with that game winning catch and the chiefs of course traded for him midseason from the Jets ended up resigning with the team back in June and had the boneheaded play on special teams last week in that game against the Jags and that's been kind of the story of uh of hardman's career is that at times it just doesn't click it's not all there right how many times have we seen over and over again where he and Patrick Mahomes weren't on the same page and Mahomes was in his face saying you know what the f are you doing here you know that's been an ongoing problem for micle Hardman and I don't know although we mentioned that cadarius Tony Sky Moore and Justin Ross are all cut candidates at this point I don't know what Brett V is thinking when it comes to those three of is he ready to give up on all three or one or the other whatever it may be skot Moore former second round pick just a couple years ago garius Tony who they traded for who they believe in uh to an extent and then Justin Ross who has looked pretty good this preseason and if you say if you trade or cut mcole Harin rather you're you're saving about a million dollars at this point are you better off with or without micole Hardman that's going to be a question the Chiefs ask themselves over the coming weeks at this point as mcole Hardman has something to prove MCO Hardman it has been an up and down career for him in Kansas City for the former second round pick out of Georgia he's been a part of three Super Bowl titles was a second Team all pro as a returner and a pro bowler back in 2019 but has never really elevated to his full potential the thought was when the Chiefs drafted him they were getting a guy that could be at least a number two receiver and he's come nowhere close to that the chiefs were hoping that he could at least replicate what he did in 2021 if he was somewhere close to 700 yards receiving I think the Chiefs would gladly take that from mccole Hardman but he hasn't even come close within the last two seasons will mccole Hardman make the 53 man roster for the kids City Chiefs weigh in type Jr chv next up a guy that hasn't been in Kansas City too long Irv Smith Jr the tight end also makes today's list and you look at the tight end room for the Kansas City Chiefs it's stacking up to be pretty dang good uh damn I'm good is what the Chiefs tight end room is saying to themselves at the moment uh with Kelsey of course Noah gray Jared Wy and somebody's going to end up being the odd man out in the mix and IR Smith Jr just might end up being that guy I like Noah gray I think he's solid I think Jared Wy has got some real potential uh potentially to be the long-term replacement for Travis Kelce whenever Travis hangs it up uh I I'm a big believer in Jared Wy here and IR Smith Jr just doesn't seem to be a part of those long-term plans when it comes to where he's at with Kansas City the former second round pick out of Alabama back in 2019 previously played with the Vikings and most recently with the Bengals he's got a decent amount of experience 49 career games played with 21 starts but for a guy that was a second round pick that that just hasn't shown a lot in his career you go back to last season just 18 catches 115 yards 6.4 yards reception one touchdown in an offense that was pretty Dynamic that you guys know fully well they love to throw the football there in Cincinnati so there's really no excuse for Earth Smith Jr did not uh have done a better job than what he did who is a player the Chiefs should keep of the players we're talking about today who is somebody that should remain on the 53 man roster weigh in let us know one player that's not going and when you look at Derek NY he brings a specific skill set to the table of being a run stopper if you're the Kansas City Chiefs you might have cheaper options that are healthy and could potentially do it just as well as Derek doy when you look at Wharton and some of these other guys that are back there the Chiefs might find themselves you know what we we don't want to deal with this we don't know when Derek n is going to come back and we got other guys that we trust and believe in and I got to tell you I like Wharton a lot too you can say gave about $210,000 against the cap not a ton of money but it's at least worthy of a discussion when you have those other pieces that are cheaper than Derek NY at this point NY a third round pick out of Florida State three-time Super Bowl champion lot of experience 98 career games played with 86 starts but when will we make his return that remains to be seen at this point as we're all just kind of waiting uh from here on out when he will uh come back uh right now you look at his career stats four total sacks seven QB hits one force fumble he's never been a guy to really get after the quarterback much his game has always been run defense we'll see if uh they hang on to him or not one more name to get to before we wrap up today's show but first now is your chance to tell us who is a player the the Chiefs should caught who is somebody our list is Lucas Niemann Lucas Nang the offensive tackle and I got to tell you it has been just disastrous for Lucas neang in h Kansas City since he joined this team back in 2020 and you look at what Brett F did this off season drafted not one not two but three offensive linemen all right niang has been tough to watch he's not a part of the future plans and what makes me disappointed when it comes to Lucas neang his play actually has gotten worse in his time in Kansas City when he should be getting better he's been on the decline get the hell out of here man you're looking at potentially saving about $ 1.11 million moving on from him but the real thing here is the roster spot that the roster spot is better served with some of these other young cats that uh are competing for playing time and for me it was a real red flag back in 2020 when Lucas as a rookie opted out the co season and said no I'm good I'm not going to play this year and I understand Global pandemic and all that to an extent but you're a third round rookie like you got to go out there and you got to prove yourself and to me that kind of told me that this guy doesn't really take football that seriously that he doesn't care that much and that sure enough has been part for the course from him since he did come back from the covid season that he hasn't put the effort in he hasn't put the work in to be uh a very good offensive lineman here in the NFL you look at BFF grades in 2023 just absolutely atrocious overall grade of 47.4 pass block grade of 56.5 run block grade of 48.4 he was not good and I would not mind one bit if the Chiefs ultimately do move on from him so there you have it that is our list of full cut candidates uh surprise cut candidates here on today's show if you made it to the end of
