more than eight months after he underwent knee surgery Abraham Lucas has yet to return for the Seahawks and his status for week one continues to look more Bleak we're going to dive into the latest non update by coach Mike McDonald what it might mean for Seattle's offensive line up next here on our Tuesday edition of locked on Seahawks you are locked on Seahawks your daily Seattle Seahawks podcast over at FanDuel now through September 22nd all FanDuel customers can bet $5 and get a three-week free trial of NFL Sunday Ticket from YouTube and YouTube TV visit fanduel.com lockon to get start started now for Le story here on our Tuesday edition of locked on Seahawks it has been a cloud hovering over the Seahawks really for the entire offseason the health of Abraham Lucas who underwent knee surgery in January he missed all but six games in an injury riddled season last year former coach Pete Carroll at one point called his knee condition chronic which of course that is not the word that you want to hear and fast forwarding now to Mid August we're less than three weeks away from the regular season opener and Rob I don't know that Mike McDonald could have said something more ominous by literally not saying anything the way that he did yesterday on Abraham lucas' status in fact this is what he had to say when asked about Lucas's chances of playing in week one he said right now I probably don't want to answer that question and that was the end of the response there's a couple ways that you could probably look at this maybe it's just a cas of hey nothing's really changed at this point he's still progressing just not as fast as we want so I got nothing else to say I'm just going to say I'm not going to answer that question or there's worse things going on behind the scenes here where not only is he in Jeopardy of missing the season opener but he starts the year of the pup list he has to miss at least the first four games it feels like the longer that this the longer this trends that he's not on the field that that second scenario starts to become more plausible here yeah no question about it I mean there's such a huge spectrum of what could possibly be happening here with Abraham Lucas as you said I mean Mike McDonald in his quote there you know just something he probably doesn't want to answer right now let's take a positive spin on that for a moment this could be coache uh you know Mike McDonald might just be saying that uh hey I'm not about to give my opponent in week one of the regular season the Denver Broncos any advantage in knowing that Abraham Lucas is by you know is is possibly going to be starting at the right tackle position for the Seahawks now that's a possibility there's of course the also the other possibility that Abraham Lucas's knee injury is in fact chronic and it is going to be a major concern for the Seahawks moving forward if that is the case then it made an awful lot of sense for the Seahawks to bring George Fant back um Mendon Curtis getting those valuable reps at the right tackle position as we talked about in yesterday's show I think it makes that position that much more stable um than what the Seahawks probably had any realistic hopes of expecting at this point in the year um but at the same time if you do L Abra lose Abraham Lucas for any extensive amount of time Corin we talked about this before with exception of the left tackle Charles cross there is nobody along the offensive line who is more important to the Seahawks success in the future than the Abraham Lucas just because the proof is in the pudding as I often like to say and Abraham Lucas is a legitimate stud left right tackle excuse me when he is on the field for the Seahawks whether it be pass protection whether it be in the running game his size his strength his sheer nastiness he is a Difference Maker for the seaha so as you said the longer that we do not see number 72 actually on the field blocking then you have to believe that the Seahawks are starting to look at the the possibility that Abraham Lucas is not going to be on the field for them and time soon and of course that's going to temper enthusiasm for the Seahawks moving forward yeah we've talked about this a few times earlier in the offseason and Connor Williams coming in maybe changes this just a little bit because I do think Connor Williams is one of those players that can truly Elevate the ceiling of an offensive line but I still think Abraham Lucas there is not a gavel here that is going to swing one way or the other when we're talking floor ceiling the way that Abraham Lucas is going to if he's not healthy and tries to play not healthy or he's just out then this offensive line this is not an offense to George fan I think he's a solid veteran that can start games for you but I think Abraham Lucas just has a much higher ceiling and can Elevate this group more than George Vance going to so I think it lowers your floor and I think it also lowers your ceiling with what you can get out of any of the possibilities to replace Abraham Lucas at right tackle so this is really one of those swing injuries that could have a major impact on the number of games the Seahawks win this year and I think the coaching staff in the front office understands that I think that's one of the reasons they're so guarded right now on trying to provide updates on him if you're looking for a positive spin here there is video that was posted by a couple of reporters that were at The Joint practices in Tennessee last week and Lucas was on a side field and he was running now I will say this he did not look to me like he was running with full juice I think he still looks like he's maybe 60 70% I'm not seeing a guy that's really exploding out of his stance or exploding out of his Sprint and really move in the way that we know Abraham Lucas can but the Silver Lining here is at least he's running we know that he's lifting he didn't have a brace in his knee so there's still are some positive here this could very well just be a case hey the Seahawks are waiting till the last minute just to make sure that he doesn't have any setbacks when he does come back but also at the same time you know this is not a surgery from what I had gathered I mean I didn't think he had a torn ACL or anything it's been eight months and for him to not be back yet I do think that the fact that now Mike McDonald's gone from well I don't have any new details to I don't want to talk about this at all I can see why some fans would be worried as well about what this might mean prognosis wise especially when you go back to what Pete Carol said last year that is still something resonating in my mind when he used the word chronic here I'm hoping that's still not what's going on here but for him to have this surgery and be eight months removed from what was not considered a major operation and he's still struggling to get back that is a little worrisome to me yeah no question about it I mean your your ears told you through Pete Carroll's use of the term chronic your ears told you a long time ago that this was potentially very very serious and then your our eyes have shown us nothing but the fact that Abraham Lucas has not been on the field for the CX at least not in full pads blocking as you said um you know there has been some workout and some videos out there but uh again until he is actually suiting up and and and moving people then it it it doesn't matter much and that may ultimately be what Mike McDonald basically was referring to with his kind of refusal to answer that question is that you know look I mean when the Seahawks released their depth chart a couple of weeks ago at the star of training camp Abraham Lucas was listed as the fourth team right tackle now that's often the case for any player who is coming off of a significant injury the way that Lucas is but still that he is not a player that was listed as first team and and then they you know were just acknowledging that once he gets healthy then he's going to have his starting role back there clearly is some concern from the Seahawks and you know it's one of the things that we talked about throughout the draft process that I was encouraged by the fact that Seattle did not dedicate an earlier draft selection to right tackle and again I'm very encouraged from what I've seen from mclinton cus I've seen from Mike jell and some of the other young tackles on this squad and to be realistic I mean Stone foresight did a serviceable job when he was pushed into both the left and right tackle positions over the last couple of years but at the same time Corbin as you said the the the ceiling is so much different without Abraham Lucas on the field for the Seahawks yeah this is going to be a storyline that we are going to continue to monitor here because the clock is ticking we are inside three weeks until the start of the regular season against the Broncos if the Seahawks activate Lucas from the pup list even if he hasn't practiced yet that is encouraging because that tells you we don't think he's going to need to miss four games we think we can get him ready before then but if he is still on the pup list and they haven't done anything with that he's going to miss a minimum of four games and that would tell you hey we don't even know if we are a month away from him being able to get back on the field and unfortunately it seems like that possibility even if it's not something that is a high probability thing right now I just feel like that is trending upward with this latest news and the fact that he is not on the field yet for the Seahawks we shall see what happens when we come back next we've got mailbag questions here in a chance to do this during the week for a while I've done some bonus episodes to make sure we get our questions in but you and I decided let's bring back the mailbag here as we approach the preseason finale against the Browns on Saturday and we got tons of questions from our valued listeners our first one here coming from Devin Walker 8219 on threads how much if at all do you think the starter should play in the preseason finale for the Seahawks includ including Gino Smith Rob we do know the Cleveland Browns are expected to play quite a few of their starters at least based on what coach Kevin stfi said got to believe that Seattle without the joint practices this week to be their replacement for the game that there's at least a pretty good chance we're going to see most of the starters if not even players like Gino Smith in this game yeah I I still wouldn't start Gino Smith um you know but at the same time I would start virtually everybody else uh certainly the the starting offensive line want to see them go up against a a qualed defensive front especially if Cleveland is going to be micking all their starters the the reason I I there's a part of me of course is old school that wants all of the starters playing every uh preseason game to really make sure that they are uh you know f- tuning the the new offense the new defense Etc at the same time the injury issues with a an aging quarterback remain big enough to me that that's why I would hold out number seven yeah as far as I'm concerned I'd like to see Gino get one series that's how I feel I'd like to just get his feet wet because this is going to be a different scheme you would have been facing a McDonald style scheme the last two weeks you're going to be seeing something a little different and just to get a chance to have Gino Smith run Ryan grubs offense in a game situation the Seahawks may say hey for us that was joint practices against the Tennessee Titans but one series two at the most now some of the starters I like to see two or three series from it just depends the younger starters like to get you out out there and get some experience definitely your rookies the o line as you mentioned but we shall see what happens most teams are going to side in 2024 on the side of caution and they are going to make sure that their starters are ready to go for week one against the Denver Broncos our next question here Hugh Millan said Cody white is fifth best receiver on the Seahawks and is challenging Bobo for number four he mentioned the kind of Separation he gets have either of you noticed this separation ability and would you say he is getting close to being a lock this is from salvat tro 503 so listen I Hugh Millan and I are great friends I've worked with him a number of times I coached with him at Mount Sai I respect the hell out of his opinion on quarterbacks and receivers obviously former NFL quarterback himself I have not heard this clip so I can't speak to this um and where this clip was from I would disagree on this I don't I think Cody white we talked about this yesterday Rob I do not think Cody white is on the right side of the bubble I think that he is one of those guys that is very much in the peripheral that you know if there was an injury could make it on the team and I think he's had a solid training camp at preseason I think he's a guy that can play in the NFL and he has made some big plays where there's been some separation ability at his size but I think saying that he's pushing Bobo at number four I don't even see him pushing the fifth and sixth receivers right now if we're being honest again I haven't seen where this quote came from I haven't had a chance to talk to Hugh about this myself but this seems like this would be a little high for my liking for Cody white well I I see both sides of this of this um you know and and like you Corbin I've worked with you for a long time and I there's there's nobody in the business whose opinion I respect more than Hugh Millan I I do agree with him in the one aspect and that I do believe that Cody white is as you just said very much an NFL legit legitimate NFL wide receiver and I think that the separation the hands that Cody white and of course the size that that Cody white possesses makes him a legitimate Challenger at four or five at the wide receiver position it's just who we are projecting at number five number six and you know in terms of DQ young in terms of lisus Chenal personally I think I have have chanal at number five I believe you do as well it's the Special Teams components the versatility that Chanel in particular offers you immediately and DQ young has that upside that I just don't believe that Cody white possesses so I agree with humil if you're were just talking about just purely as a wide receiver yeah I think you can make an argument that Cody white is the fifth best wide receiver on this squad and and perhaps pushing for Jake Bobo uh maybe to be that number four guy just because I've also seen terrific hands from Cody white and that obviously is the best thing that Jake Bobo possesses I still currently have uh Cody Wy number five as the receiver guy but again because of the lack of special team standout ability then that's why I currently have him as the number seven wide receiver and very much on the roster bubble uh but again I think that Cody white is a terrific football player and should be on an NFL team and I mean a 50 three man NFL team not just the practice squad uh moving forward our next question coming from salvat tro 503 I believe I actually put two questions down for the same person that forgot to change who submitted the other one our apologies with Sam how looking solid in both preseason game so far can you see how is the Seahawks QB the future especially if Gino Smith struggles throughout the season so I'm just gonna say this look Sam how looks Daylights better it's night and day what he looked like the first week of training camp to what we saw in that preseason second game in Tennessee in terms of comfort the way that he's throwing the football his decision making all those things are coming together but this is where the idea of the preseason you can't put too much stock in it and we've seen what Gino Smith looks like on the practice field running Ryan Grub's offense it would require Gino Smith to stumble and fall flat on his face at least to get on the field this year obviously injuries but those are always in consideration for how to be the guy next year I don't know that you can put that stock in him just on preseason games you would have to have somehow that he gets in some games in the regular season this year and plays really well if that happens with him being just 24 years old and Gino Smith gonna be 35 soon you know that creates some different Dynamics there to consider but I think just basing off of preseason a half of preseason games I'm not going to be jumping out there saying Sam how is your franchise quarterback after this year I'm not going to sit here and say that it couldn't happen but I think he's going to have to show something in the regular season there's going to have to be some circumstances that create that opportunity whether it's Smith just not getting the job done or having an injury whatever the case may be it's really tough to put that kind of stock in preseason games and teams have been burned for doing that at the quarterback position our next question here for Rob what percentage of defensive snaps do you think Draymond Jones will play for the 2024 Seahawks this coming from Hawk astrologer on X uh I think it's a great question um you know that's one of the things that Draymond Jones is a player Corbin that has has played increasing number of snaps each of his Five Seasons in the NFL he said a career high for snaps this past season with the Seahawks and I think that he's unfortunately been took the brunt of a lot of you know frustration from Seahawk fans out there who who saw the big splashy contract that he signed for and frankly we're expecting much bigger numbers than the four and a half sacks that he had a year ago but if you look at his numbers over the four seasons of the Denver Broncos he averaged five and a half sacks the most he ever had in a single season was six and a half sacks Draymond Jones was solid last year just wasn't spectacular as I said before his sack or his snaps have risen every year I I expect it to be very similar this upcoming season is what it was last year right about 65% I think that he has the talent um and fit in Mike McDonald's defense to play more I just think that Seal's deeper and so I think that there's going to be more rotation but I still think that Draymond Jones is a foundational piece of this defense and I expect it to be a vastly improved defense in 2024 they just got to get him healthy that's been the biggest issue this training camp with the Tweet hamstring that he just hasn't been able to quite get over but that question is actually a pretty good segue here into this next one from Bob cells 429 on threads what do you make of players like boy MAF playing into the second half of preseason games what is that mean moving forward I I don't know if Rob if you agree with me on this but I feel like everyone of these situations you have to look at context when you're looking at players that are playing into the second half that have been starters in the past and I look at the context here one boy MAF has not been great in training camp I'm just gonna be honest with you he has lost a bunch of reps to Mike derell in one-on ones there have not been the Splashy plays there's been a few of them but it has not been as consistent in the training camp practices that I was at two Draymond Jones has been injured Daryl Taylor was injured for a good chunk of Camp there's not a ton of depth that Ed rusher position I think Derek Hall and boy MAF still being younger players you know Mike McDonald wanted to see where these guys fit into this scheme but he also kind of was a little bit hamstrung in the fact that am I go to have Nelson Caesar play 90% of the snaps in preseason games that has been a big issue so I think in context here you're looking at a player in boy MAF who the Seahawks want to see what he looks like in this scheme I love what they're doing moving him around some this year letting him go over the A and B Gap and rush there's some really cool stuff he did in that Titans game on Saturday night you can't learn some of that stuff without actually seeing game reps and then you add in the fact that the depth there's just a big drop off after those first three or four guys you've had Draymond Jones Daryl Taylor banged up you you have to have somebody play that position so I think DK call boy MAF because they're younger guys and they're still trying to carve out that role in this new defense I think that the staff has decided those are two guys that we're going to let run a little bit and that's the way things have gone they're certainly not in trouble for losing roster spots and I still expect both these guys especially MAF are going to get a lot of snaps in Mike McDonald's defense and our last question Rob this would be a good one for you from a scouting perspective from Max 74 dog on threads do either of you see Huntley or DTR as an upgrade over PJ Walker If released by the Browns I'm just GNA say that right now the Browns are going to release at least one of these guys because you already have jamus Winston as the backup for Deshaun Watson both those guys are healthy would you keep one of the other guys maybe you keep three on the roster because Watson's had some injuries but it feels like one of these guys is going to hit the market and so I guess the question Rob is is either one of them going to be a superior option to what Seattle has at quarterback three right now well we certainly haven't seen PJ Walker perform as well as hoped uh you know and throughout the training camp practices that I saw I thought they you look pretty solid and then you know unfortunately just had a tough day at the office in this past preseason game obviously we're expecting PJ Walker to get an awful lot of playing time in this third preseason game perhaps the two quarterbacks that you mentioned from the Cleveland Browns and awful lot of other third fourth string quarterbacks throughout the NFL are are basically going to be putting their best foot forward in the hopes that they can sign elsewhere do I currently like those two quarterbacks more than PJ Walker I I like the athletic upside especially of DTR a lot but I also have been encouraged by what I've seen just the practice habits and leaderships from PJ Walker and he's inhouse so again I I think that PJ Walker is on the outside looking in I think that he is a practice squad candidate for this club and the seah are always going to be looking at whatever options are available to them and it's kind of like the conversation we had previously at the right tackle position just the ceiling upside I think that there are some quarterbacks out there who have a better athletic upside than what PJ Walker presents but at the same time again that remember what that third quarterback is likely to be doing for you most of the time he's going to be basically seeing on the sideline operating as like a sideline coach or you know a different set of eyes you do want a player that has some veteran ability rather than just being somebody you are developing to be that that so-called quarterback in the future when we come back speaking of that Browns game which offensive players have the most to gain heading into the preseason finale Rob and I are going to dish out our top four on offense when we come back you're listening to the Tuesday edition of locked on Seahawks welcome back to the locked on Seahawks podcast I'm your host Corbin Smith glad to be joined as always by my coast and crime Rob rang and a special thanks to each and every one of the TW tuning in thank you as always for making lock on Seahawks your first list in five days a week we greatly appreciate it the Seahawks preseason going to be coming to a close on Saturday night their first home game of the season at Lumen field taking on the Cleveland Browns as we talked about earlier Rob the Browns are expected we don't know how many but they are going to play some starters in this game leading up to week one I anticipate the Seahawks are going to play some of their starters too we don't know how many Mike McDonald's going to take the leash off of and see if he can get a little bit of run before week one against the Broncos but going into this game as we talked about the last couple weeks under roster projections there's a handful of spots that are still somewhat up in the air that guys are trying to jockey position for to win one of those final roster spots and so let's look on the offens side of the football and this doesn't have to be for roster spots it could be for starting jobs as well but offensive players that have the most riding on this game that need to go out would benefit most from having a big preseason finale against the Browns and I know there's one player in particular that just had a pretty big game against the Titans that you're looking at thinking I need to see it again with maybe a Sprinkle of some pass protection as well yeah no question about we've talked an awful lot about Kenny McIntosh and so sure I I want to see that wiggle through the whole I want to see the the balance through contact that we saw during his time at Georgia but you hit the nail on the head there buddy with you want to see better pass protection from Kenny McIntosh so to me he is of all the players on the offense he probably has the most eyes on him I I don't think that he has a lock to make this squad hell I'm not even sure he's a lock to make the practice squad if he doesn't make the Seahawks 53 just because as we've talked about we like Seattle's running back depth and again there's going to be an awful lot of very talented running backs that are going to be shaking loose from other NFL teams out there K Macintosh is where I'd start the conversation we talked an awful lot about Cody white before he is somebody who again kind of like Kenny Macintosh I think might be uh you know performing not only for the Seahawks but for every every other one of those 31 teams out there again I'm a big believer in Cody white I love the fact that Cleveland may be starting uh or or playing some of their starters because Cleveland's got length at the cornerback position and that's going to be one of the questions is can Cody white continue to beat up on other big defensive backs who can match up with his size and show off that separation ability that we talked about before those are the two guys that I'm most intrigued by I'm goingon to mention Stone foresight we had the conversation before by Abraham Lucas and stone foresight primarily playing left tackle has had some issues but at the same time there are just very few young and he's still what 25 years old I believe offensive tackles in the NFL who have his starting experience and have his size in 40 yard dash time 40 yard dash time is important for off the tackles because it just shows your your natural athletic ability and forye has that he struggles a little bit with leverage and again a a stout Cleveland defensive line is going to give him some challenges so I think this is going to be a fun game to watch from him and then finally because the Seahawks have had the struggles they've had at the tight end position that I believe is going to throw the rookie Michigan's AJ Barner very much more into the Forefront for the Seahawks and so I want to continue to see what I've seen every opportunity I've had to watch Barner so far continue to be the show the soft hands and the physicality along the line of scrimmage as a run blocker if he can do that we've talked so much about a couple of different rookies for the Seahawks obviously Byron Murphy obviously Tyrese Knight obviously Christian Haynes AJ Barner May wind up playing as critical of a role of any of those players with it all comes down to the Seahawks needing a run blocking tight end should Pharaoh Brown's injury or perhaps even Noah fans injuries wind up being something that uh is a real concern for the Seahawks for a significant amount of time and you mentioned Stone foresight I'm going to start off on the offensive line myself but rather than looking at Fringe roster candidates and I'll have plenty of those that I look at here in this segment but we've got to start with Christian Haynes going up against Anthony Bradford or going up with Anthony Bradford I mean there's a chance that both these guys are going to start together again which you know I I was talking to Ray Roberts former Seahawks offensive lineman on social media about this a little bit yesterday and and we are in agreement I'm almost wondering if this ends up turning into a situation where if Anthony Bradford's the start at Right Guard Christian hayne's gonna get some snaps rotating in with lake and Tomlinson early in the year and eventually he just takes the job and then both these guys are starting so I'm not predicting that but I could very easily see that being something that happens but we are looking at the Right Guard spot specifically right now and Mike McDonald has said multiple times this is not over this is still very much a competition so for a preseason game I do feel like there's a lot riding in this game for both these guys who played really well in Tennessee I thought Haynes had a great game I thought Bradford played really well can they replicate that who is going to be able to either create distance or in the case of Christian Haynes Leap Frog and get that Right Guard job for week one so to me that is number one two and three going into this preseason game as far as offensive players the most to gain and potentially lose those two going against each other at Right Guard as far as other players you mentioned at the tight end spot AJ Barner I'm gonna throw Tyler ma out here because Tyler Ma I think gets a little bit of a bad R in terms of his overall skill set this is not a guy that is going to wow you with his speed or rack up a ton of catches he's not a big guy for a tight end he's in the 240s and yet he does those move blocks as well as anybody in the Seahawks roster we saw it on one of Kenny mcintosh's big runs the other day in that Wham block and man Ryan grub loves tight ends that he can do that with that he can move around and do a lot of blocks in space with that can catch some passes so Tyler ma now with this injury to phro Brown that might be the guy because he has played special teams and he's a pretty solid special teams player that might be a guy who has a real opportunity here to get himself back on this roster especially fa Brown starts off on injured reserve and then staying on the receiving side of things you mentioned Cody white I'm gonna go to ESOP Winston and ESOP Winston's had a really good training camp in preseason second straight year he's done that just had a touchdown this last game his key to making this roster is going to be can he get an opportunity to return kicks and punts and we haven't seen it yet to this point in the preseason but that's something he brings to the table he's got regular season experience doing with the Saints earlier in his career and it feels like this is kind of that last gasp effort for him because he's 28 years old not an old guy but not a young player anymore either if he's going to break thaty and get over the hump and get on Seattle's roster this feels like the year that he could maybe do it can you stack another really good game and then push DQ young off the roster or be that seventh receiver because you're going to play some special teams so I'm looking at him as a key guy to watch and wrapping things up as far as one of those final roster spots a player that could still very much get on to the 53 I haven't had him on my 53 you have Mike derell has impressed when he's had his opportunities this training camp of preseason the problem's been he's playing with a third string offensive line there hasn't been much practice footage where you've been able to see him going up against top Defenders on Seattle's roster he hasn't really had that test yet if he gets a lot of snaps in this game and the Browns are playing some really good second stringers maybe he get some reps against guys that are going to be on Cleveland's roster and so that is a real opportunity he hasn't had yet to try to impress put some good film out there and we know the athletic traits that he has 95th percentile athlete of the tackle position if he puts good film out there that may be a guy the Seahawks suddenly realize hey there ain't no way we're sneaking him to the practice squad let's get him on the roster so as much as any player out there there might be no guy on offense that has more writing on this game to making the roster than Mike derell and and making an NFL roster in general if he plays well in the Seahawks cut him somebody else is going to have a chance to claim him so I think Mike derell is a guy to keep a very close eye on heading into this game as always you can follow me on X and threads at Corbin Smith NFL you can follow Rob Rob rang make sure to subscribe to locked on Seahawks on YouTube and wherever you listen to your podcast to make sure you don't miss a single episode when we come
