Football: Bill O'Brien Media Availability (Aug. 10, 2024)

I no Stadium tonight uh the scoreboards aren't ready okay that's a tough question to start off no the scoreboards aren't ready yeah um so we needed a scoreboard to do some of the drills we were doing uh would you like one tonight uh you know I thought it was all right you know I think I think we're getting better but I thought uh it was just okay tonight and I think we need a better day tomorrow Co bumping up to pads and and just getting the the real bump in there how does that open up you want to do with drills versus what you're doing for the last week yeah it's important I mean we you know look we we've basically been in pads we've been in shoulder pads for a few days but yeah to be in full paths to be able to go live in some of the drills that's why I think it was just okay like they've got to you know get uh get to the next step of being able to go live and be able to sustain a whole practice you know they started out good uh and then I thought it kind of waned as practice went on so we got to we got to have a good day tomorrow t about Richard had a big practice today uh especially you talked a little bit about what he's been doing so far and you see on him yeah he's a good player he's uh you know true freshman um very smart guy uh calm guy got good Poise learns well uh he's got a lot of good qualities for that position he's had a good for a freshman he's had a good camp um back bright early tomorrow morning what are you hoping to see from you know a quick turnaround yeah the the mental toughness you know that's what we're trying to you know develop mental and physical toughness so that's what training camp is there's some going to be some quick turnarounds from night practice to morning practice so hopefully we can we can you know get some good rest tonight and get up and be ready to go and you know bring some good energy to the field tomorrow no doubt coach there was that drill closer to the end where you had like the I think it was seven on seven they had the the like line of scrimmage and then that you were doing passing into the end zone it's just what are you looking for out of guys when you start to do drills like that you're not necessarily going 11 on 11 and then you step into 11 and on 11 like what are you looking for out of them Focus wise fundamental wise and then bring it into a full live action yeah the philosophy basically is um we meet we walk through we jog through and then in in many ways it's a PO it's a part whole part whole you know mentality so we do group drills where maybe it's just seven on seven or it's this half of the line versus that half of the line you know or you know it's um you know different one-on-one type of periods whatever it might be and then we try to put it all together in 11 on 11 so it's a progression so everything that we do is a progression from the meeting room to the walkth through to the jog through to the drill to the group drill and then to eventually to 11 on 11 it's a progression to get to where you all you put it all together so that's kind of the philosophy and and from that when you need to improve or you see things you need to improve then you have like Branch out drills then you're like okay this worked but now we have to go back and look at things or like how do you kind of assess from there I mean not not really we're trying to install still so that was only practice seven so we're not going to make any determinations on any scheme or anything we're just just we're still like tonight we installed two minute we installed some some red area plays so you know in practice sometimes you don't know what you're going to see on either side of the ball so you're not going to throw a play out just because it didn't work against a certain look you're going to just keep building and keep installing true freshman Jonathan monu I saw him practicing with the wide receivers out there today is that something that's going to continue or yeah he's a guy that uh we we believe can help us in a lot of different areas we still think he can help us a quarterback but he's a really good athlete that um is really smart and he's got some some you know some ability to to catch the ball to run good routes so we're teaching him Receiver right now probably keep him there for a couple weeks and see how that goes so TR Bo fum through the end zone tonight how do you kind of balance that line between you know wanting to guy to give that extra effort and and doing the smart thing I think that was uh Bond was it Ward or Bond I think it was bond by the front pylon yeah I think it was Lewis bom but anyways yeah you never want to reach the ball out right so possession of the ball if you have the ball at the six yard I mean the 6 in line like no problem like we'll knock it in on the next play you don't want to reach the ball out th th those are when bad things happen so you know we'll learn from that Lewis is one of our best players so we'll learn from that those are good teaching moments where you can go into the film room and show them and U and then they'll they they won't do it again and uh it's j it's still early but kicking competition where are you at right now yeah I don't know I don't know it's a battle I mean they're both they're both good kickers um you know I do think kad's the punter right now I think saenko is right there but I think Ken's the punter but when it comes to the place kicking competition I think you got Liam and Luca there and they're both battling it out so I wouldn't be able to say right now who who that would be which it was like 100 degrees the last couple days to get like nighttime conditions you did you enjoy that with the little dry cool out there yeah you get a little breeze I thought that was good although we do need some of the heat though because we're you know when we open the season it's not going to be real cold down there so um but you know we've had a lot of hot days throughout the summer and early in Training Camps so I I think these guys are conditioned to the weather but um yeah no it was it was probably a good cool little breeze off the reservoir Tonight Tonight nighttime practice you a morning guy or a nighttime guy after a night either either or I mean yeah no I mean I don't I've done it all so you know morning afternoon night doesn't matter we did it tonight because we play at night you know to open so we want to give him a a feel of what a you know a practice trying to get ready for a practice at night would be like so that's why we did it you
