you are a locked on Braves postcast part of locked on Sports Atlanta your team every day hello and welcome into the Braves postcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day Grant McCaul alongside Jake mastriani after a frustrating night of baseball for the Braves who rolled in to Philadelphia with some momentum jumped out to an early lead but they were not able to hold on to it the Phillies coming back with a pair of home runs to beat the Braves 5 to four in the first of this four game series a showdown we talked about yesterday which may very well be Atlanta's Last Stand or at least their last best chance to make some noise in the National League East we'll recap this game and get you set for game two of this four game series which comes your way on Friday before we get into all of that though make sure you hit the Thumbs Up Button subscribe to lockon sports Atlanta on YouTube and to lockon Braves wherever you get your podcast today's episode's brought to you by Game Time download the game time app create an account use the code locked on MLB for $20 off your first purchase terms apply download game time today what time is it game time well for the Braves on this night Jake they rolled in and did exactly what you were kind of hoping they swept the they swept the Minnesota Twins they come in and jump out to an early lead but the middle Innings went ay for the Braves and this one most definitely Charlie Morton had kind of worked his way into and out of trouble many times but he wasn't quite able to get out of the sixth inning and that was the first of the major dominoes to fall for the Braves to lose and for the Phillies to take advantage and to uh ultimately take this game and you said I mean everything was going the Braves way this week and in this game in particular you got the sweep you came into it you know even after getting in very early late whatever you want to call it uh last night this morning you come out you jump out to a lead and you kind of you know shut things down a little bit in that Stadium obviously it doesn't take much for them to get going again but you had the early lead you had exactly what you wanted and just weren't able to hold on and you know that's a couple of times this week now that the Braves have had some pretty you know solid leads and the bullpen hasn't been able to hold on to it now we'll get into that more but this one hurts it certainly does and if it's a you know regular you know earlier in the season game I probably say okay you had some some bad batted ball luck couple things didn't go your way that happens in baseball sometimes but at the end of the season now as you said it's kind of The Last Stand you got a chance to win this game you really want to finish it off yeah you definitely do and I think there were some things that just kind of went wrong for the Braves in this one they were up four to nothing obviously heading into the sixth inning a couple Runners get on against Charlie Morton who's you know pushing over a 100 pitches and I think that in sizing up a Charlie Morton start and in giving credit where it's due for a guy that has done this for a very long time and had success Against The Hitter that he was charged with facing with two out and two on I can understand the case for leaving Morton out there but considering what you just talked about the importance of these games where you are in the season and the fact that you ended up going to the left-hander anyway why not after five and two3 innings give Aaron bummer the matchup against the Lefty and just go ahead and play the numbers if you're going to do that because what's the difference honestly between five and two-thirds Innings and six Innings out of Morton you knew he was done either way that is kind of where I felt like the Braves and for Brian snitker weren't able to pull the trigger at the time they needed to to at least give themselves a chance to get maybe a different matchup who knows what the outcome would have been none of us know but in terms of would have could have should have that ranks up there pretty high yeah I mean they very well if you bring in bummer they probably pinch hit or righty there in that spot anyway and you know who knows what happens but it should have been bummer either way I'm not you know obviously in hindsight to Caesar to say but that but I think we all were thinking it he was up and ready to go and it should have been his spot with morn kind of losing it a little bit but you know this kind of goes back to what's happened the last couple of games here and we talked about it yesterday the fact you've had to use your top Bullpen arms and I feel that that leads a little bit to this loss because if you have Pierce Johnson Joe Jimenez and a glacius ready to go I don't think you hesitate to go to bummer in that spot because you know you have those guys ready to go but with you know especially Iggy and Joe jimnez likely down in this one Snicker trying to get a couple more outs there from Charlie Morton to get through that inning but and then deploy Aaron bummer against the top of their lineup where you got a couple lefties and schwarber and Harper so I get the thinking and I understand the reasoning a little bit but again as I kind of said at the minute you you almost have to treat these like a postseason game and you got a chance to win you have to go and get it you cannot try to just get another out from your pitcher when they clearly look like they're done you had the guy up and ready go to him get out of that inning see what you know Falls after that but certainly left him in there a little bit too long got burned by it and look the ball went out it's a home run it was clearly wind ated it's a 38 degree launch angle yeah both laurano and Michael Harris were thinking it was going to be a routine Fly ball and it carried out but either way it it happened it was a home run uh but certainly again getting back to the bullpen situation I think it's a you know carry over from what happened in the last two games of that Twin series having to use so much of your top Bullpen arms yeah and you understand why they're using them and you also understand and appreciate the fact that uh they're trying to win those games they're trying to win all those games I heard Brian stier talking about it after this contest and I mean I I know it's not going to make anybody feel any better to listen to him explain it when the explanation is yeah we're trying to win and it sucks and they're all tough and they're all going to be tough losses and we're not going to go 30 and0 I know that kind of stuff probably doesn't make people feel too much better either of course I don't really know what else he's going to say besides it is not fun to lose in some way shape form or fashion there's just not really much else you can say about it uh when you do look at what was going on in this game I mean I guess it was one out and two on for Charlie Morton but you did have the Lefty coming up there and it was the bottom half of the order and I do get it but if you've got Aaron bummer ready why not and you only ended up using him for what a third of an inning in this one as well or excuse me twoth thirds of an inning in this one why not let him do it so so uh take everything I said earlier take five and a third and put it in for when I said five and 2/3 those couple of outs could be really big and I think that the real frustration Factor I'm sure for you know a lot of the Braves fans that were watching this game and a lot of the folks I heard from on social media was why do you have that guy ready if you're just not going to use him in that situation and I think that is kind of part and parcel to this loss and that wasn't even the one that gave the Phillies the lead either that was Grant Holmes against Nick castalanos what in the seventh inning as the Phillies got a big two-run Homer there that put them on top and and I said this on social and I'll stand by it as well I mean there have been some losses that I guess have felt a lot worse this year I know this one obviously stings though when you get up and you're winning this game but when it all comes down to it as well you know the maret bat I feel like was the place where you had the opportunity to really truly change the outcome of this game there was some fluky batted ball luck with that as you mentioned uh 240 expected batting average on the marsh home run Michael Harris the second couple Innings later hit an absolute screamer to center field that had a 740 expected batting average it was caught right in front of the wall it's just one of those things I mean baseball is a weird fluky game if you try to figure it all out or go all by the Numbers it'll still do things that you don't expect it to do yeah it's just again like I said if if this were a game game 34 of the season I think you kind of sit back a little bit easier and say you know the Braves played well in this one I thought for the most part they outplayed the Phillies in this one it's really just two big swings that you had that Marsh at B and then the cast ctios had bat I thought the Braves swung the bats really well the only thing I didn't like the had bats late in the game against the reliever weren't very good weren't some weren't really some great at bats like you saw earlier in this one but for the most part again if you just sit back and don't think out of it you need to win every single game I thought the race played pretty well in this one just a couple of things that didn't go their way and they end up losing it uh but yeah and you're right that that spot you know right there against Brandon March I feel like that was the game I know casos was the go-ahead home run there which I don't know why you keep throwing him fast balls he's slugging 463 against fast balls this year he's he's slugging 360 against breaking pitches and Holmes has a really good slider I think having Trey Turner on third base there maybe had a little bit to do with it you got a fast runner on third so you want to be careful about you know breaking pitches in the dirt so that certainly plays into that decision making but you know they throwing two fast balls there to castiano certainly plays into his willhouse but again it goes back to the marsh at bat that that right there to me was the game yeah and you're in a position too where I mean Grant Holmes all due respect to what he has done and the role that he can play in the bullpen I mean that's not exactly the leverage reliever choice that you want to make there either yeah yeah and again it goes back to the last couple of games you were probably down jimnez want to avoid him down Iggy you know if it's a normal situation you know that's probably Pierce Johnson or Joe jimnez there in that spot but because you had to use some of those levers and look I was fine with that you got a chance to win those games go and do it but it's just a result of that now you're having to count on a on a Aaron bummer and a grant Holmes in those High leverage situations to try to win a really big game yeah I almost wonder if they did have a save situation I mean is that Dylan Lee at this point it seems like Johnson I mean if Pierce Johnson is also down I don't know who all's down or who alls up or what they're all doing and that is kind of the frustrating part about sitting off to the side you want to say all right we should use this guy this guy this guy and this guy there may be different things going on and obviously they're trying to manage the workloads here they're not going to be able to throw these relievers 25 times in the next 30 games to win all these you know win all of them not every save is going to belong to Rice glacia so on and so forth but either way I don't guess we had to worry about a save situation when it all came down to it but you could tell that they didn't have all of the bullets that they would have liked to have had in order to fire them at the Phillies here in game one yeah certainly didn't because like I said if you did you don't go to Grant Holmes in that situation as good as he's been and I think he is a guy that you're going to have to count on in in some of those spots but more so in that guy that kind of bridge the gap a guy that maybe has to come in and get an out in the sixth inning to get out of a jam and maybe pitch a seventh inning uh but it's not you know a guy that you're looking to face the the top of the order in a one-run game you know in the seventh and eighth inning but that's just the state of where the bullpen was coming into the series because they played so many close games lately and had to use so many of those guys yeah and you want to win them all as as much as you can the sweep in Minnesota doesn't go away just because they lost this game in Philly but it does put the pressure right back on the Braves because their momentum stops and shifts right back over to a Phillies club that if we're calling a spade to Spade has also not played well in the second half they've been about 500 Club as well so you know they're trying to figure their things out as they go so this is an important win they're all important wins I mean spoiler alert at this time of year everything is going to be a little bit more heightened a little bit more valuable as well but uh either way for the Braves with this loss they dropped to six games back in the East and definitely does feel like a missed opportunity game as we have talked about quite a bit we're going to talk about it even more whether you love it or hate it that's what we've got on top for today's edition of the Braves postcast a frustrating loss for the Braves in this one 54 in comeback fashion the Phillies take it we will talk more about the the outing for Charlie Morton as well as a big game from Matt Olsen who hit as I said about nine miles worth of home runs on Thursday against the Phillies we'll get to that as the bra postcast continues get hydrated with electrolytes essential vitamins and well Jake let's pick apart a little bit more pick the bones of what was an unfund day of baseball for the Braves after what had been a very very good series coming in the Braves jump out to the early lead but fall short in a 5-4 loss to the Phil Philadelphia Phillies four run seven hits no errors for Atlanta six men left on base five runs seven hits one error and eight men left AB board for the Phillies bravs now 73 and 61 on the year Philly 79 and 55 the loss in this game goes to Grant Holmes and the win meanwhile goes to Orion kirking both of those obviously in relief and the save goes to Hoffman his 10th of the season to close things out for the Philadelphia Phillies in this one Charlie Morton five and 2/3 five hits three earned runs four walks seven strikeouts a hit batsman and a home run filled up all the columns unfortunately he had done such a nice job though in all seriousness of just kind of tiptoeing through the Minefield all night long and you know I understand the veteran going against a batter that he had faced a couple of times and really had gotten his number I also can understand and appreciate on a more advanced you know metric side of it the fact that that fly ball to left field did not seem like or feel like a home run until it was but the frustration of it was of course that Charlie Morton had been kind of laboring the Phillies were once again mounting a threat you had somebody ready in the bullpen you didn't go to them and ultimately all of that combined cost the Braves dearly and for Charlie Morton it kind of took a kind of gritty gutty you know uh performance that the Braves very much needed to try to give them at least as much length as he could and then the search to get another out or two out of them it ended up costing the Braves yeah young or old you have to work that hard in a start it's going to come back to to catch up with you at some point because we saw it with Spencer schellenbach the other night I mean he had to work a ton in that game against the Twins and you saw him kind of tire out at the end there Charlie Morton had to do a lot of work early in this game to get around some of his own issues with the walks to hit batters but he was able to manage that and there was a point early in this game where I didn't think we were gonna get five innings out of Charlie Morton and then once he did I thought okay great you've gotten five innings anything you get after this is great and you just left him out there again a little bit too long in that situation but otherwise you know like you said I thought Charlie Morton did a good job of working around his own mistakes keeping runs off the board same as Spencer swach the other night who had to work really hard in his but kept some runs off the board it's just again it comes down to that one bat to Brandon Marsh in this game and a curveball that was left up and look Brandon March hit it hard but it's 38 degree launch angles that's that's not supposed to go out like that uh but either way you know again it happened it's unfortunate because it was turning into being a really good night for Charlie Morton after a rough start yeah and you just you needed as much as you could get but it's kind of to track back to the Minnesota series because I know you were talking about different you know Bullpen pieces that have been used maybe a little bit more used than you would expect just based on some of the final scores but you go into that first game you got a rain delay for 90 minutes they're lucky that Max freed came out and and was able to get five full Innings out of that schwellenbach meanwhile I mean he wasn't able to get through five and his last start either so every one of these little moves where you had to use somebody else maybe another day or two more than you wanted to and I know you can point at that final game and say why are you using your higher leverage guys like well look you got a chance to finish off that sweep you should certainly take advantage of that but you knew it was going to put them at at least some kind of an imposition with a a reliever or two at the very least it felt like Joe Jimenez and probably ryel glacius weren't going to be available in this game and that was going to change things of course neither of those guys were going to come in in the sixth inning so all of that is a moot point you just didn't make the decision to go to bummer there and ultimately as hindsight so often is I don't even know if it's 2020 Jake I feel like hindsight is like 2010 Vision it's like fighter pilot Vision Ted Williams Vision when we go back and look at it all I mean it's look I'm not one of those that want to get rid of Brian Snicker I think he's a great man manager I know it's easy to say that after this game and maybe the one on Tuesday as well I thought that was a bit questionable but a lot of people I probably would have assumed that you're going to go to Aaron bummer in that situation because if you're going to go to Aaron bummer there to get the Lefty out once March comes up you're still two batters away from getting schwarber and you want him to face that matchup which he did the next inning anyway so you know you're probably going to go ahead and bring Aaron bummer out for that next inning again I get it you're trying to get one more inning to not have to bring those relievers in but just why not go ahead and go to them you have them up ready you have a lefty essentially the you know it was the game like I said we've talked about that was the game that was the The Spot in this one where the game was decided and you just made the wrong decision and look it happens and again we've talked about a lot but it all goes back to what happened in that Minnesota series and great you swept it I'm okay with the decision on Wednesday to go to your best guys to close it out you didn't want to make the same mistake you did the night before where you didn't go to those guys and then you end up have to to use all of them because the game got tied up but it does you know I think you can say that that correlates to a loss in the first game of the series yeah I mean and it all connects obviously and the you know also infuriating thing I don't know we really touched on this too much but then when you bring Aaron bummer back out to start the seventh inning Tre Turner works that walk and that's one of those things where I mean on a night Charlie Morton pitches you've already probably been hyper aware of is it a walk before something bad happens and it was only this time it was a walk by another pitcher and a home run given up by the next guy up and unfortunately on this night yeah the next guy up thing either wasn't timed correctly or it just didn't work out for the Braves and sometimes uh unfortunately that is the game of baseball Braves bats awfully quiet against the Phillies bull pin three in a third Innings of hitless ball for them no walks and five strikeouts the cruelty of the game again as I mentioned earlier Marsh's three-run Homer at 240 expected batting average Michael Harris had probably the hardest hit ball of the night not off the bat of Matt Olsen which we will get to in a minute uh because we have covered most of the Doom and Gloom here and might as well cover a couple of things that did go right for the Braves 740 expected batting average for Michael Harris on the liner Orlando Ria also with a double and a run knocked in to get the Braves scoring started it was man Olson though who took it from there two homers 450 ft I felt like he might have been short change a little bit maybe it's just the Optics of hitting it over the batter's eye that has me feeling that way but either way you don't see him up there too often I had some people point out oh no Evan gtis did that no Evan gtis hit a Titanic home run but it was to left center field and I don't think there too many balls hit over the batter's eyes or batter eye batter's eye in too many stadiums you know what I'm talking about be that as it may another one for 427 feet later and that's 14 home runs in 22 regular season games for Matt Olson at Citizens Bank Park Jake yeah he's got up to 25 and there was a real question if he'd get to 30 and I guess that still is a question but uh to be where he is now just a good second half I know he had a little bit of a rough there a couple of weeks ago uh but either way he's had a really good second half of the Season definitely turned it on with the power it's now six games in a row with an extra base hit I don't know if I need to get a Tracker going or not but uh that is certainly great work for Matt Olsson as we continue to say that's that's what you've been looking for with him all year long is that extra base that power potential he certainly delivered in this one he he gave it his best effort to carry the Braves to a win also I wanted to you know mention the Ria hit you talked about that was a clutch hit there in a two-out situation Harris being able to score from First shows some of that speed that we talked about that now is in the middle of that order he was batting seventh tonight behind Ramone laurano who's been great lately and had a hit in this one but also struck out three times there was that a bat versus STM where STM just kept giving them pitches to hit and he kept fouling them off could not square one up I really thought he was going to come through in that spot uh but you know some good stuff like I said there's some good things to take out of this game it really just comes down to the bullpen situation that you had in this one that I think proved really costly yeah It ultimately did just looking at Matt olsson's game logs he had 12 excuse me 13 home runs through his first 102 games of the season and now as he sits in game number 134 he just reached 25 so some simple math a dozen home runs and what about 30 31 games pretty impressive stuff for Matt Olsen here late 32 games here lately for him and a couple of big home runs that had the Braves uh in the lead but as we've talked about ad nauseum at this point that lead did not stay the test of time for the Braves in their 5-4 loss against the Phillies uh we're going to turn the page or at least attempt to when we come back on the Braves postcast talk a little bit about game two of the series and what else is going on for the Braves as far as their playoff positioning is concerned and where they are in the standings both now in the East and of course we'll take a look at the would say have a pretty short memory uh about this and just get back to their winning ways which the last couple of weeks has been the best that we've seen in some time I know they haven't all been perfect some of them have been pretty hard fought tooth and nail and what have you but they have to go out there and even things up on Friday and they can't be allowing this to linger for too long and this is a club that historically has been pretty good at having that separation it's been kind of the calling card of this team for a while now that the even kill that something you hear a lot about this team that they're pretty good at just shaking off you know anything like this that happens and come back out the next day but you know it's not that deam uh you know we talked about a lot you cannot compare this 23 to 24 anymore it's not the same group of guys I still think you have that mentality in there uh but there is a sense of urgency now maybe that's a good thing for this team maybe they need that sense of urgency to get back out there you obviously got some good starters you feel like the rest of the series they going to give you a chance to win but you know it's hard to hard not to think about the fact you had this one this is a game you feel like you should have won get the series off on a good start you let it get away from you gonna be hard to shake that off but that's what they they got to do yeah Ronaldo Lopez gonna get the ball in game two on Friday Max freed will go Saturday and then at Spencer swelling boach for Sunday Night Baseball in case you haven't looked at the schedule Braves and Phillies will be under the lights there as well it's Lopez against Rangers Suarez in game two and another good thing about this before we get into the starting pitching matchup uh the brav should have the full Bullpen assortment back for the rest of this series I would imagine and that could Factor heavily into the plans and also the decision-making process behind what reliever you can deploy in what situation and exactly how much depth you have to work with and you hope you get that situation again right I mean this was you you had the opportunity in this one you just didn't have the the bullets available and now you just hope to have that opportunity again but you're right you should have that opportunity look we said coming in though or I said coming in you have to win this series just splitting it doesn't do you any good you still go into the month of September five games back and that's a lot to overcome with 25 26 games left on the schedule so the Braves got to find a way to bounce back and win these next three games it's going to be a really tough challenge but you do like those pictures that you have on the mound for you to give you a chance yeah the Braves now six and four against the Phillies head-to-head the split series as you just mentioned is five games back leaving taking three out of four how's you at that manageable three games back and for the sake of both brevity and our own sanity we won't go through the other scenarios which are obviously not ideal for the Braves in this one you might have noticed over at third base Luke Williams was filling in yet again GI orella missed the past couple of games with a sore groin Mark bone of ml.com among those to report he expects to be back this weekend but uh Jake isn't it just crazy to be talking about yet another player dealing with yet another malady though this one hopefully not major but unavailable for the Braves and all he's trying to do is fill in for the guy who the Braves lost for six to eight weeks yeah just part for the course this season unfortunately kind of all wondered yesterday why Luke Williams was in there luckily he was he had a big game and he had a good play tonight too on a hard hit ball that was hit to him moved the Tre Turner to third before that home run but I thought that was a really good play out of him yeah just unfortunate but it just is the year and unfortunate forella who was starting to catch on and getting a group here with this Braves te team hopefully it does nothing major and get him back in there soon yeah hopefully it doesn't keep him out for very long because the Braves certainly need him his defense has been very good Luke Williams though a nice couple of days for him uh certainly and not having an opportunity to play all together that much making the most of it which is good to see uh with their shella back in there at third base though you feel like that Braves infield defense is where it needs to be they attempted to double up Trey Turner on this night but obviously we know how difficult that could be that didn't play out in this particular game but as the Braves get themselves ready for game two on Friday night 6:40 p.m. eastern time first pitch game two of the four game series we'll see right-hander Ronaldo Lopez on the bound 7-4 202 erra the Lefty Ranger Suarez will face the Braves he is 11 and5 has a 282 erra on the season when we last Saw Ronaldo it was against the Phillies and it was maybe the besties looked in a brav uniform to this point Jake Atlanta could certainly use another one of those to help them get back even in this series and Ronaldo Lopez after that little stint on the injured list that chance to kind of rest and recharge hopefully he's ready for some important Innings that will begin on Friday night at Citizens Bank Park or they'll continue with I'm sure many more to come the Brer hoping yeah he seems really uh refreshed and good after that little break that he had and the injury that he had 17 strikeouts in his last two outings since coming off the injured list there giving up one earned or less in both of those starts or gave up one earned in both of those starts so would love to see that again against this Phillies team again you feel good with your starting pitching on the mount they give you a chance to bounce back so love seeing Ronaldo out there a great season that he's had and again I know he had the injury there but it's also just kind of a I don't want to call it a blessing in the sky you don't want to had any injuries but it just allowed him to kind of take that break and and kind of refresh because he hasn't pitched this this many innings in in a long time so hopefully that has has helped him a little bit but going on the other side Ranger for is a guy that just seems to have the Braves numers certainly in the postseason so going to be a tough match up for this offense yeah and Ranger Suarez is a guy that maybe a little bit like some of the other outings that we've seen maybe even the Charlie Morton outing where like you're just tempting fate you're dealing with a lot of base runners but can you get the big hit against them the Braves have seemed to have a little bit of trouble getting that done more times than not yeah Ronaldo Lopez though last time against the Phillies 10 strikeouts across his five innings that was the last time he went head-to-head with the Phillies but he did have that start in the finale against Washington as well he's looked very good since coming off the list can he do it again for this Braves club and go for his eighth win of the Season as he faces off against Rangers Suarez that's going to wrap us up here for this edition of the Braves postcast as always we appreciate you riding along with us even on nights like this make sure you subscribe to lockon sports Atlanta on YouTube leave us those likes and comments share the show with a friend and subscribe to
