BOOM! Buckeyes Land Commitment From Elite Receiver Phillip Bell

hello everybody Welcome to the Buckeye weekly podcast I am Tony German here with Kevin noon Kevin how's it going wow no power paw I guess because we're talking about some breaking news so we have to get to it quickly I'm I'm doing well I finally cooled off largely from a warm day at Ohio stadium but uh you know now we you know there's there's always news in Buckeye Nation yeah I watched Ohio State win 52 to6 on Saturday and then Saturday evening get the news of the verbal commitment of mission vijo California wide receiver Philip Bell the number 19 wide receiver in the nation PR the 247 composite 62195 Kevin a Brian Hartline wide receiver chooses Ohio State over USC and then took like five official visits in the spring but you always give Brian Harline the benefit of the doubt not that this is a concern he's you know fourstar receiver but Philip Bell now I believe the 26th member of the Ohio State recruiting class yeah I've lost count on the recruiting class as we sit there and we see the move from 885 to 105 but it's not really a move to 105 because you're moving from 120 to 105 but none of that matters at this moment uh Mission Vio a school that I'm very familiar with they were in my league when I was in high school so I know Mission VA well granted you know Philip Bell's parents maybe younger than me I I don't know but uh you know I think this is a huge get 62 195 I think a lot of Ohio State fans got focused on some of the names that were out there earlier uh certainly Jamie French being one of them uh you've got Dorian Moore you know they were all they always kept swinging at at Philip Bell and that you know this is not a a case of if you know if Ohio State wanted to bring in an instate guy and they could I mean still look to you know to Preston Bowman out of Pickerington North who's committed to Kentucky but you know this he Philip Bell had a realest finalist got it down to two Ohio State and USC and uh Ohio State goes into Southern California and and and lands him yeah with a guy that just BR Harline offered him so he wants him and they stayed with it you know you've got this tier of guys and when things start falling off then you know you increase and you raise up the other guys and Philip Bell they finally get somebody this is now their third wide receiver commit but Philip Bell last year as a junior 56 catches for 644 yards seven touchdowns he transferred into m v Vio last year before that he was at Sacramento Christian Brothers where as a sophomore 818 yards and 20 touchdowns as a freshman Kevin 56 catches 1,2 yards 12 touchdowns uh so he's he's very effective in the the Red Zone good route Runner tough to defend one-on-one just a guy that gets open makes catches I'd like to maybe see some more run after the catch but you look at the the the 20 yards a catch as a freshman it's there it's just like Mission V some sometimes you move to these bigger schools and it's it's there's a level of this is a new league this is a new level it's not as easy as it was before so the numbers take a little bit of a dip kind of as we saw with Sam Samuel uh Sam Williams Dixon even though like he didn't get to play towards the end of that but there's always an adjustment moving up a level right and that's the thing because all right yeah Mission Vio is not modern day or St John bosow but it is a very competitive School uh they've changed the leagues I couldn't tell you which League they're out in now but uh it it's a it's a lot harder than maybe when you're up in in Sacramento there's I mean there are a couple of big school in in NorCal that put out some kids but the majority of the talent in southern is in Southern California and Mission Vio is certainly won of them that does that I mean I Ohio State still hasn't been able to necessarily break throughout a modern day I mean you got to hold on to to to Chris Henry Jr but uh you know I like that Belle seems to have a a pretty you know big body I mean he could still probably fill out a little bit more I think he could probably play at 210 um I just think that this is a a huge yet when you sit there and you kind of look at you know Ohio state has a slot guy in the class and has a couple of outside guys and I think that that uh you know that's that's the mixture that they want to have and uh you know I don't know if they're necessarily done I think they could maybe add a add a fourth guy to the class at at wide receiver again we're talking about how numbers are just kind of getting thrown to the wind but you know you just you just got to see but I I've never been one to to doubt Brian Hartline when it comes to his evaluations yeah and I think I said they' got now three receivers it is four like you said with uh bod pen Miller the ohioan playing quarterback see and I had him as an athlete still I yeah I so and I I always forget about DZ Jones as that slot guy but if you watch his highlights in his film like that dude is an elite route Runner and he gets open he's got some some Jackson Smith and jiga to him in terms of just the routes and and the difficulty of Defender staying with him and of course you you look at Quincy Porter who is to me he is an elite receiver he's like 63 190 but I don't know how people are not talking about I mean you know why Jeremiah Smith cast a long shadow people aren't talking about mil Graham right and I don't know that he actually got out there today but again a fstar wide receiver that comes in and it's everybody knows now why the the gravity surrounds Jeremiah Smith the way uh people talk about him but you've get Philip Bell the last receiver Ohio State signed from from California would be Chris olve sounds right yeah so hey not bad and then as you said do everything you can to keep Chris Henry Jr who was who was here in Columbus this weekend so I don't think there's any concerns there but certainly there always concerns it's Cuttin yeah you're not going to get lazy about that one they're certainly going to stay after him so now um they they pretty much have all of the positions covered in terms of the receivers but bod pen Miller I more of a developmental guy so you don't red shirt these days but you bring him in and red shirt him right and he's completely fine with that because he's not going to be able to play receiver to learn the position necessarily until he finally gets here because he's playing he's playing quarterback at Ontario you get him in and he knows he knows the score on that and you know he's an elite athlete but it's going to take a little bit of time I mean it takes Elite receivers time I mean we can talk about Jaden Ballard was a top 100 recruit and it's taken him some time so you get him in you see where they go but I I you you add in Philip Bell and now they've got three guys that are receivers in high school will there be more I know there are still guys out there but the numbers are dwindling but also there is still a senior season to be played yeah I mean you I mean we don't know enough about these guys at this point because they're senior season they're what one two games in so I mean it's you know there's a lot to figure out at that point so we you know we got to kind of uh you know sit there and and and and and temper our expectations and for you know on guys that you're like oh I'm not sure if he's there well you've also got to give them the benefit of the doubt yeah so um pretty good uh pretty good get for the Buckeyes a something on the quarterbacks the future recruiting the future commits that quarterback will like and they'll just continue to bring in four 5 every year we talked about the going to 105 like that's that's going to be the norm and when you have positions that can leave willy-nilly on a whim and get into the portal you kind of need to bring in a bunch every year you can't go you can't miss your numbers they kind of missed their numbers this in 2024 you know maybe I mean they wanted four they got three if you're talking about Demario Whitten as well so you kind of got to catch up from that a little bit but um not a bad game uh in fact quite a good get somebody that had offers from all over the place Georgia Florida State all you know Alabama probably as well I think was in there so uh good get for the Buckey now commit number 26 of the nation's top ranked recruiting class I I will be surprised if they end up number one overall just because they never have recruiting when you look at the the commits that they have like you just scroll through and it's like 12 or 13 top 100 guys guys they've got a chance this year it's it's it's going I think it's going to be tough I mean it's going to be what does Georgia do down the stretch what does Alabama do down the stretch does Ohio State hang on to everybody there's already rumors out there that Naim offer you know had a really good visit to to Auburn uh what you know they're not they're not going to lose out to Auburn in terms of going to number one but you take a five star out of the equation potentially that could that could hurt them but you know I I don't I don't want to I don't want to speak anything to existence if that happens but if it does you take another swing at Dorian Brew you take a swing at you know some of these other guys and see you know see what happens I mean we're not you know we're it's it's just a well I guess still it's technically August but uh you know we got a ways to go to December yeah so there you go newest Buckeye commit member of the class Philip Bell
