morning Good morning Joe and good morning everyone Syria's foreign minister is quoted today as saying that his country is rejecting in its present form the US negotiated withdrawal agreement between Israel and Lebanon in Israel meanwhile us Israeli and Lebanese negotiators are putting the final touches on that withdrawal agreement which is expected to be signed next week however the agreement cannot be implemented until Syria also agrees to withdraw its troops from Lebanon a capital Airways jet hijacked to Cuba is safe on the ground in Miami this morning the plane with 250 passengers on board was on route from San Juan to Miami when it was hijacked passengers arriving back in Miami described the hijacker as a woman wearing a turban and armed with a flare pistol she was taken off the plane in Havana it's the second time that same flight's been hijacked in two weeks the president has scored another victory for the MX missile issue the Senate Appropriations Committee has approved a half billion dollars to fund the missile the vote came after the president agreed in writing to the build Down plan of destroying old nuclear war heads when new ones are deployed in Moscow an editorial in Pravda is charging that President Reagan is not going far enough in negotiating reduction of missiles in Europe more on that from Bob zelnick the prda editorial here in Moscow appears to rule out a European formula based on us Soviet Warhead equality so long as the British and French nuclear arsenals are ignored provda claims that merging Yuri andropov recent Warhead Proposal with President Reagan's zero option or interim plan is impossible the editorial says these are mutually exclusive things and accuses Washington of appealing to the naive and gullible by suggesting otherwise provda also demands reductions of medium-range US aircraft based in Europe and the editorial argues that Soviet missiles in Asia cannot be part of the ongoing talks Western diplomats here took particular note of the provda warning that deployment of the plan NATO purging two missiles would require a response by the USSR and the other warsa treaty countries since the visit of East German leader Eric Hanukah early this month there have been a number of hints that one Soviet response to the NATO missiles would be to install both cruise and Shor ranged ballistic missiles on warsa pack territory outside the Soviet Union Bob zelnick ABC News Moscow also this morning the Republican dominated Senate has handed President Reagan a major setback by refusing to pass a budget compromise when a majority of senators couldn't settle on whether to raise taxes or the deficit they sent the issue back to committee a new Senate budget plan is expected out of committee on Wednesday however the president has vowed to veto any budget that repeals the third year of his tax cut Eastern Airlines says it will suspend for 30 days without pay those two mechanics who failed to replace oil seals on a jetliner that nearly plunged into the ocean last week after it lost power officials say the mechanics will be retrained and reassigned when they return and in Sicily today a rescue attempt of Earth moving prop ions workers are planning an explosion they hope will divert a worsening lava flow into a man-made trench they hope to keep the lava away from Villages at the base of the this morning Mile City in Sheridan that snow as you can see in the forecast weather maps for the next 24 hours will be winding down as that storm departs rapidly into Canada but the storms and riness through the nation's midsection will continue an extensive severe alert from Texas into Illinois today and flash flood watch from Oklahoma into Missouri some pretty big storms too in parts of Ohio and Kentucky I'm predicting temperatures to climb into the 70s as far to the North as New York City today but it'll be a quite cool day out in the pl states with a 45 at Rapid City and a 44 at bismar lots of snow on the ground out in that country over the weekend we're predicting that big stormy pattern to continue in the Mississippi Valley edging Eastward the wet and chilly weather to continue behind 1983 it opens today at the proverbial theater near you and wow this is a great summer movie True the first hour of Blue Thunder plays more like pink humidity it's about as exciting as watching mildew but that's in the Summer movie tradition these are kids films kids on summer vacation they don't want you to miss much while you're finding your seat unwrapping your Milk Duds trying to find out if you really can taste any difference between a red Juju be and green Juju be they give you time to get all the monkey business with your date over with then they cut to the Chase and I'll tell you they ought to make Lois put in seat belts this Chase does not stop yep we are talking helicopters Blue Thunder is Roy sher's Chopper an experimental $5 million job that can see through walls here through buildings and fire machine gun bullets at a zillion rounds a second shs an LAPD pilot testing Blue Thunder allegedly for crowd control for the 1984 Olympics but he discovers he's Aon in in a Watergate type plot that will use Blue Thunder for 1984 as in Big Brother that kind of crowd control shider Bells Malcolm McDow an old Vietnam Nemesis tries to gut him down all this over downtown LA and under and in between called it duel in the smog so what if there's no story what there is interesting is good acting Roy shider is so impressive always believable always holding whatever structure this film has together with gaffer's tape and talent also in the scene you'll see Daniel thern remember him from breaking away and Diner and Warren Oats Warren Oats plays a police captain sher's boss he looks like he's lived as last 20 years on Mayock and Jim Beam not necessarily together he's one of those actors you've seen a hundred times never remember because he's such a good character actor you remember the character not the actor this was his last film he died a year ago a heart attack it' be nice if the academy thought about a supporting actor nomination for him you'll see why when I'm John stasel has concentrated on a product called biogenesis we saw it tested on men who found that it did not grow hair and we saw how a man named Glenn brazwell made millions of dollars selling biogenesis this morning John stasel tells us how brazwell and others take advantage of unwary C consumers I've been trying to get brazwell to go on TV to talk to you about all this in fact I've been asking him now for a year but he won't after watching Good morning America this week his assistant called me and claimed the double blind study was done incorrectly because the doctor told the bald men to massage their heads too vigorously at any rate none of the bald men grew hair and when we called people who brazwell said were satisfied customers they told us they didn't grow hair and last year the government took brazwell to court saying none of his 15 hair products including biogenesis could cure baldness and the government won what puzzles me is how did brazwell get away with it for so long we asked the Federal Trade Commission they said they never realized how big brazwell would get we asked the postal inspectors they said the law simply Works slowly postal attorney Tom zebar says it can take a year just to file the briefs the judge has to make his decision after he gets the briefs and then the appeal process starts and that can go on for several years and even when the before 8 that is forgot a couple of words even though it's May uh there's still plenty of snow in the ski areas out west recently our Steve Fox I went to the beautiful Snowy Peaks of Colorado to witness an incredible Sports competition it is an awesome region both beautiful and hostile where the air is thin the sun blinding and the weather unpredictable and unforgiving changing from Blue Sky to Blizzard within moments the Hall of the Mountain Kings inhospitable remote impossible but it is is here only where human beings seem so out of place that men and women can experience something as Extreme as this environment a sport that pushes skiers to the limits of their abilities as they seek to set records for Speed by plunging headlong down a 13,000 ft Mountain speed skiers are a rare breed they have to be to have the urge to ski faster than any other human being ever on steep slopes at high altitudes now there are only about 200 speed skiers in the world and only three slopes that they consider high enough and steep enough to allow them to reach speeds of close to 130 mph this is one of those slopes it's called velocity Peak located near the town of Silverton Colorado for a week in April this B elevation 11,000 ft becomes a base camp for skiers Spectators and support crew some of whom have been at work since November blowing down potential avalanches and shaping and packing the racetrack to make world record speeds possible the skiers come from Europe Canada and the United States the nature of their Quest is ancient to be the best while confronting and conquering danger but their equipment is modern even Space Age tested in Wind tunnels final rubber suits minimize wind resistance and increase speed the skis are some of the flattest longest and stiffest made rubber or plastic fins are worn behind the calves to reduce turbulence buffeting a skier's legs at speeds over 100 m hour and the helmets dramatic and Artful in look but designed like everything else to enhance both safety and speed the helmet is aerodynamically designed it's very narrow and profile and it has the two fins on top for steering once we leave the snow and are actually flying these fins allow us to steer as racetime approaches helicopters Ferry the skiers 2,000 ft up from the base camp to the top of the mountain first down the mountain are the forerunners newcomers to the sport who nonetheless hit speeds between 80 and 90 M an hour as they test the safety of the course and the accuracy of the speed trap a 100 m stretch of track between two of electric eyes the fastest skiers pass through it in less than 2 seconds at the top the skiers pause before their runs to prepare for the challenge ahead it takes the total concentration and you have to jump around and attack right off the bat and you have to have all that in your mind exactly what you're going to do how many skating steps you want to make where you want to go on the track you know you got to let the make sure the winds going over your shoulders that's the main thing if the wind gets underneath your shoulders you get broken out of your position it's like a big can opener you're just out of your out of your tuck just like that you have to know what's in front of you you have to know your equipment's good you have to know you're ready you know physically and then it's easy for you to have that that mental psych all of those things give you the confidence without confidence you don't belong on the mountain the racers know that because one doubt one moment of lost concentration and this can happen falling at over 100 miles an hour can be frightening and dangerous it doesn't happen that often but a few people have died and the Very thought of it is something that all race
