[Music] good evening and welcome back to sports talkg ATL I am Chas Earl joined by Alex Lord the Braves get a I wouldn't say much needed because so much needed because the the Mets did win but I would say just a good win a good series win to continue a good stretch of baseball I mean dating back to last week they beat the Giants then they beat the Angels and then they beat the Phillies and the Phillies aren't playing best baseball but when you're beating a division rival that's ahead of you uh nothing to complain about especially with everything this team has gone through and the story of this entire series was the pitching staff and there's two guys last night that continued to just kind of blow you away right and one of them Spencer swell and boach and it's because the story and I almost kind you almost kind of forget because he's been up here for so long this guy pitched 13 Innings at Double A he made two starts at Double a skipped triaa and over the last two months he has been just as good if not better than Paul skin who we were talking like a month ago about potentially winning the sa young I me I mean this guy if it weren't for Paul SK would be like a legitimate candidate for the NL rookie of the year if he finishes the year strong I mean he has been that dominant and every time he's on the mound I'm just as confident as any other pitcher outside of maybe Chris S like right now if you were to say just because the way Max Freed's kind of strugger I know he pitched well like I would Spencer swellen Box's probably this guy that I'm second most confident in the Braves rotation every time and to think he started the year in high a roome pitched 13 innings in double a skipped Triple A play entirely was literally a year like a two years ago not even two years ago was out for the season with Tommy John surgery like wasn't even a full-time pitcher in college like is just tipping the iceberg of what he can be and he's already just unbelievable like how many guys throws six pitches evenly and he can turn to him at any moment in any situation whatever the situation calls for he walks nobody five walks over his last 60 inning or 50 Innings compared to 65 strikeouts that's a 10 over an 11 an 11 a 12 close to a 12 12 strikeout DWI Rock ratio I'm trying to do math in my head 12 over his last what eight nine starts I mean it's just it's spectacular I mean he looks like a legitimate superstar in the making yeah and I think the reason why he's not getting national attention in Atlanta obviously everybody's excited about him but it's because of like the entire body of work he's got you know a 3.9 something erra but like you just mentioned over his last eight starts over the last two months it's not just Paul schem like there are very few pitchers in the entire league who have been better than Spencer schellenbach over the last two months slat his eight starts uh he's absolutely unbelievable I I I'm more than convinced that this guy's got it uh you know you said tipping of the iceberger I've never heard that scratching the surface is I think what you were going for no this this is the tip of the iceberg this isn't even the tip of the iceberg he's not even scratching the surface you just laid out all those things this kid was playing shortstop three or four years ago in like occasionally closing baseball games uh in college so like I I don't even know I if tip of the iceberg scratching the surface is really even doing it justice it's like this kid just stumbled into him being a savant at something he had no idea he could do like and I'm saying Savant like like we did something on the site go check it out sportalk atl.com and somebody commented you know you know hold your horses you know we we've seen this time in before I saw people mention Bryce Elder I saw people me mention Ian Anderson this isn't even close this is this is better Spencer Strider has two pitches Ian Anderson had two pitches Bryce Elder has nothing compared to what Spencer schwellenbach has his repertoire is what makes this so exciting legitimate six pitch mix that he throws somewhat evenly that doesn't happen all the time and it's more than that it's the Poise it's the way he attacks batters I mean last night he uh probably should have had seven uh seven Innings of one run ball he couldn't feel the ball that was coming not that fast at him on the mound ends up giving a run off of that on the very next pitch it was an outstanding outing and and going back to that eight stretch eight start stretch it began against the Phillies and if you can dominate the Phillies you will be in Atlanta a very very very long time and the article I'm referencing to all of this was basically and I'm not going to get too deep into it but Spencer swelling box box emergence makes the idea of losing Max freeden uh free agency not as bad as it once was like at the beginning of the year we're frantic we're we got a sign Max free no matter what the Outlook of this rotation is great yeah I mean it it it's spenc because of Spencer schwell I mean Spencer schwellenbach is is the cherry on top because the guy looks like he could be a number one in the future and you have a number one coming back in Spencer shrider that's potentially replacing Max freed and you still have Chris S under contract team control for the next two years and Ronaldo Lopez for the next two or three years at a very palatable rate and all of a sudden you're looking at oh we're just replacing Spencer Strider with Max freed and that we still have this kind of level of rotation as long as Chris S and Ronaldo Lopez keep doing their thing yeah I mean a year ago it it's like we were terrified of potentially losing Max freed now I'm thinking I don't even know if those conversations s Focus to the position players like how the hell are we going to improve I don't even know if that conversation with Max freed really starts that much because it's just like dude like at the end of the day like we're not gonna go spend 200 million dollars on another starting pitcher especially when you have a guy like Ian Anderson who you mentioned who is is on his way back who could potentially be a fifth starter AJ Smith Scher has looked a lot better late you like huren walri you like some of these younger guys that are coming up in the system and you can go out free agency and maybe fill a gap get a stop Gap guy until those guys are are proven or ready or whatever Walker bu I said something jokingly on Twitter the guy's been horrendous this year but it's the exact kind of deal oneyear deal rebuilds his free agent value goes out and balls out for the Atlanta Braves how many times have you seen that so that's what you're kind of talking about just somebody a kind of a flyer a one-year flyer or find another Ronaldo Lopez I mean it's really simple go find the best or Chris Sale like I mean the point is they've proven that they can do it without handing out $300 million and when you have those four guys that you're looking at next year rotation you're like do we need to go SP swach extension is more likely at this point than a free a Max freed contract I mean it's certainly yeah I I even I added that actually to your article I said you know maybe you should get him on the instead of calling Max freeze agent he should get Spencer swelling box agent and say hey you want to be here for the next eight years let's get this done that's something the other guy that I have to mention and and we talked about him a little bit more as of late is Rosell glacius I mean he comes in into a 3-2 game a big game right Bryce Harper beginning the inning hard of the Phillies lineup 12 pitches three strikeouts good night it's just I like Rosell glacias is the best he's ever looked in his entire career I mean the guy over 20 26 Innings I believe 23 Innings has not given up a run he hasn't given up a base runner in almost a month a walker a hit over his last 10 appearances he hasn't given up I mean it's just it's silly silly stuff and opponents over his last 23 innings are hitting 050 six against him he has given up four hits and two walks over 23 Innings the guy's basically essentially thrown a few no hitters like back to back if you go over nine I mean it's it's been unbelievable he looks amazing the stuff looks amazing I don't I haven't looked at it but the velocity seems like it's a little up every touching 97 last night that's not easy and everything is like sharper right like the the change up is sharp biting 90 miles per hour any kind any kind of off speed he's throwing he's mostly fast ball changer but everything just looks sharp and he's attacking dominant and when you went from Spencer schach to Rasel glacies it's the same thing good stuff great stuff fast pitching work knows where I'm going it's like almost like him and the catcher are on the same wave like they don't even need to they don't even need to look there's no we don't need pitchcar if you look at Bryce Harper's numbers against Rosel glacius they're crazy I mean like he's had like nine plate appearance and like half of them have been home run so and he just walked up to the plate and said good or five four pitches good morning good afternoon good night I mean he has been so damn good and it's crazy it's this weird year where we have everything going wrong but we have three things that are going so right that like if you had said those are the three things i' been like that's kind of crazy I want to say one more thing about before you go into that Rosel glaus just to remind fol we got him in a glorified salary dump for tuck tuck Davidson and our own Jesse Chavez a couple years ago Davidson is like headed to the Independent League and but still I mean that's just the angels for you you know and he was having a terrible year I think he had an RA with a four in front of it when we acquired he had an RA with a four but that was like the only bad half season that he's ever had and other than that he's been a lockdown closer but this is the best he's ever been the best he's ever been has been these two and a half years or two years we got a I want to shout out a couple of other minor contributors that are just you know we've got three guys starting pretty much every day that have been DFA and they are are balling their butts off and that was what we've been used to as Atlanta braady where we just go pick up another team scraps uh you know bottom of the barrel and they come to Atlanta and they they have their best stuff they they become the best versions of themselves and we hadn't seen that a lot you know for most of the season and Whit Maryfield and rone larano and um uh Gio Gio Ura have been absolutely critical to this this little success we've had so far big hit for Ura last night whip marfield didn't do much another hit for should had two RBI but but Ura yeah yeah got kind of screwed on the ground rout double but uh yeah and then also fantastic defense fantastic defense at the hot corner almost make on Austin riy look B who's a very good defensive uh third baseman in his own right to totally right and all you're hoping here man if you're the Atlanta Braves let's just hang around get our back let's just hang around Jorge cir should be back hopefully Friday yeah I mean hopefully he's back in the lineup today aie ALB isn't too far away we're getting close to that September Mark who knows you get into the postseason Austin riy like and as I keep saying man this Matt olon goes on a one month tear this starting pitching staff though is so damn good well what we saw this series damn good is the formula for success and quite frankly it's if you're going into the postseason you're not going to beat guys you know 10 to zero 10 to two things like that it's going to be lowc scoring Affairs and this Braves team is built to win those kind of games as we just saw against the Phillies I mean Chris Sail didn't even pitch we won two out of three games and I don't think we scored more than three runs in any game like it was literally like 3-2 3-2 32 yeah 31 like it was like those were the kind of games that you're probably going to get in the post season and guess what we didn't even throw Chris saila like and they threw their best they threw their Zack wheelers and Aaron nolas and their Christopher Sanchez three Allstars for them this year three guys that are having unbelievable years and we threw you know we threw our kind of our best we didn't throw our absolute best and that's Chris S and I'm telling you when Chris Sale toes the rubber in a potential postseason game if you can get there and he like you feel like it's an automatic win every time he now it hasn't been but he's one damn near every time he steps on the on the bump and it's going to be that way against whoever he faces however got some momentum going into the national series I mean you got to keep it going man the Nationals traded away a lot of players they got some Talent don't get me wrong they've definitely handed it to us the last few times yeah we at home like come on Chris Sail On The Bump to start the series let's get it going get the win and get things on the right track this weekend
