especially at his age approach free agency without a deal in place Dak is coming off a career year in 2023 and yet here we are in 2024 with no long-term deal locked down for the future so what's going on why is this happening let's break it all down first off Prescott was ranked ninth in Mike Sand's 2024 quarterback tiers a ranking system based on opinions from execu Ives and coaches around the league Dak will turn 32 years old next year and there's no sign of his game slowing down of course injuries can always play a factor but unless he suffers a rare injury that affects his throwing ability Prescott is expected to continue playing at a high level this is where things get really interesting Dak Prescott is heading into free agency at a point in his career when quarterbacks don't typically hit the open market the Cowboys have been negotiating with deck since 2019 and after a long back and forth Prescott signed a 4-year $160 million extension in 2020 with $126 million guaranteed but here's where his representation athletes first pulled a smart move they forced the Cowboys to use a second franchise tag on Deck even though they were working on a deal if Dallas tries to tag Dak for a third time it would trigger a massive salary increase with 44% of his previous cap hit making it virtually impossible to keep him without a huge financial commitment but despite all of this Jerry Jones and the Cowboys haven't pulled the trigger on an extension this offseason why not well Cowboys fans this is where things get complicated Dak has all the leverage he knows that if reaches free agency for the cowboys that would be a serious problem let's be honest there's no viable replacement for Dak on the roster the Cowboys traded for Trey Lance but as we saw in the preseason finale against the Chargers Lance through five interceptions and doesn't look ready to take the Reigns as a starting quarterback just yet plus the 2024 quarterback draft class isn't shaping up to be a strong one so it's unlikely the Cowboys will find their next franchise quarterback there either and with Prescott continuing to play at a high level he ranks fourth in expected points added EPA per drop back fifth in yard s per attempt and eighth in total touchdown passes since 2020 it's hard to imagine Dallas moving on from him without taking a serious step backward now let's talk about the playoffs this is the one knock on Deck he's two to five in postseason play some argue that he hasn't won consistently in the playoffs but others like the ringer Steven Ruiz point out that Prescott has actually performed better than most quarterbacks in the playoffs sure he had a couple of rough outings against the 49ers in 2022 and 2021 but remember his Elite performances against the Packers in6 and the Rams in 2018 in most of dak's playoff losses the Cowboys defense gave up more than 30 points making it tough for any quarterback to win so where does that leave us Cowboys fans it seems like
