[Music] H olon Scott Gerard 975 the KSL Sports Zone it's your youth preview show ready for Utah and Baylor coming up on Saturday should be a fun one again this game went right down to the wire last year in Baylor in Waco this one yeah probably more of the same you you think more of the same this is a different you think it's gonna be a blowout this is a different team well we're going to get some I think we're going to get some expert commentary three hacks sitting here but now we're going to get the professional yes so that's that's always helpful or bringing in the pros but this is a different team I I think well I think Baylor's better and Utah's better yeah I think Utah Utah dealing with massive injuries on the defensive side a year ago well it was only game two last year it was only game two but they still had you still had Lander yeah but where was otou like they had some I get it missing pieces and they didn't have pep they didn't have Cam Rising the running game was was damaged yeah was not very good I think this is I mean yeah I'll give Baylor is improved yeah but Utah was lacking was also lacking last year and is is an improved football team this year yeah so and it's at home I I think this is a what's the spread like 14 yeah hey let's what wait you don't just have to yell that you don't have to just yell it throw on that mic the last the last time maybe we should do that I like that better when he's just yelling things in the background the last time we spoke with Brock Brock he called me he said friend FOH friends of hands friends are hands and I was like H fo it's not a bad deal I don't even know this guy why do you guys why do you guys know each other Indianapolis we played on the Colts together yeah he was the kindest not that's a great memory and that team was so crusty the old line coach was this old pirate could just the scientist oh and then the foul M oh the coordinator like all you're talking about hands no talking about the the rest of the Colts players and there's hands smile Joy tenderness oh man was a happy guy was that because you were so happy because you were like you were just living your dream and you knew that you really shouldn't be there well it depends Okay so this this this is this is what we do on this show yeah yeah I know you were just like I can't believe that I'm here I'm just going to enjoy every small on house money right now I'm pretty sure anybody that's in the NFL feels like I can't believe no you weren't ever there I would yeah no I was going to say had I been there I would have felt that I was to I would have felt that way like it's an incredible feeling I'd like to share it with you Frank yeah you should 8020 80% of the guys fell that way when we were 20% making the hi when we were out there together was i o linman or D linman that's a great question I think I was a I think you were there with swinger I think you were swinging back and forth no knew you got to be careful in state of Utah with that word it means something different you got a whole community and dra that just pered their ears up in this neighborhood Moonlight as an offensive lineman at times it's good to see you Brock things are good man I will say this you guys were chatting a little bit about the game Baylor's got some dudes yeah Finn is the is the man he's okay he's super athletic he's he's a mistake waiting to happen he's a big play waiting to happen he is a big play Waiting happen but we were looking I better pull my phone out to give you the exact numbers I had our our crack research staff look at this because to me the story is that Dave Aranda kind of did what Gary Patterson and Nick Sabin and these guys like okay I I want to do it this way um dabo's not doing it he's not adjusting but Aranda did and for a guy that just did not believe in transfers two years ago had four and this year's got 20 yeah and those are impact guys I just went through them two top receivers yep your starting quarterback both your running backs are are Baylor born and raised but yep New pieces a couple old linemen 26 transfers how many of okay so you're saying impact players how many of the 2 are that 26 on like the starting roster no it's 22 on the entire roster and I you know I want to say yeah like you said quarterback Right Guard think there's five yep um there's some other component you're linebacker the pick six but you're in a point where you have to now and Clemson next year will do it because saying Baylor has to or generally everybody has but see that's the big difference because look at Utah's roster Utah has three maybe four guys who are in the starting rotation that are transfers Utah has built it completely differently talk about first you're talking about this year's transfers I mean every year is going to be a little different you know based on your needs and stuff like but but but at the end of the day you have to in some way shape or form your starting quarterback at the University of Utah is a transfer guy it is free agency you want to draft and develop all pro teams say the same thing I want to be a draft in development but you have to find free agents to fill in the gaps when the development didn't happen when injuries happen and and yeah aanda for a bunch of years down there just wouldn't do it thought well we got high school football in Texas and he right you know five hours within Baylor you can get all the players you want and you get those and develop them but then some don't develop and some flame out and some get injured and that is where the portal has to come in in free agency to uh to be a stop Gap and to fill those stops so Brock is you're putting your notes together getting ready for University of Utah by the way you're calling this Utah and Baylor if you're you're putting the notes together are you in the the belief category top 10 top Big 12 winning this conference or do you have questions what were your thoughts as you were put yeah if I was a preseason voter I would have picked them to win the conference I think they've got the least amount of questions I will say watching that first game your two offensive tackles M got to step it up they got to grow up yeah they got to grow one's one's a sophomore one's a r freshman you know feno started last year at left tackle and they loved him and he was only what 17 or 18 oh he was brilliant last year but move him to right and the other kid can absolutely run yeah I mean they they are athletic dudes but they are light and those kids from Southern Utah were in the back I was like what what they were spinning them around a little bit yes and these two edges yeah that you're going to see Saturday are a huge physical upgrade from those guys so um that's a little concerning interior The Old Lion still I mean mfi is just absolutely hilarious and a fun guy what what do they have 12 tight ends all your backs cam um you know good receivers dine solid I will be curious with tuna and Peppa you know are they guys that can actually do it are they so beat up over the course of this time that you're just cuz you're going to have to have that right with the Kansas States and the Iowa States and this conference and everything else you're going to have to have depth there defensively in that in that group that group that and obviously now a corner the corner like yeah that's that's a real so no team is perfect they got the fewest flaws I would pick them to win this place is miserable for anybody to try to come in and play it's our favorite west of the Mississippi right along with Washington and Oregon they're all three are going to be on the pedestal a favorite places to call games cuz it's an absolute mad house and they know who they are very very clearly has it been uh just from a personal standpoint because you do you put so much work into your preparation and you're easily one of the best prepared analysts that I've seen on TV and your Radio Show in Seattle you do a tremendous job there has it been weird diving into the Big 12 after being knee deep in the Pack 12 for so many years it's just bizarre is I mean they were the Pack 12 was 11 to1 last week yeah so you know but they in the ocean and no longer to be found right there's just a a landslide in the Pacific unfortunately yeah it still is just it still is Goofy it's still trying to get used to all of it that just doesn't make any sense Stanford and Cal in the ACC like what what do we even what do we even do this just makes no logical common sense but I am excited about a 12 team playoff yes I am excited about what's coming in October and November where it's going to be a lot more seats at the table like ladimer and an opportunity uh to make things happen and and Utah will absolutely be in that mix I will say this too though we had our production Mee we have our production meeting tomorrow with Kyle and Andy and Morgan which is also hilarious oh yeah because Andy comes in at 10 he leaves at 10:19 Morgan comes in at 1020 he leaves at 1039 Kyle comes in postwork workout at 10:40 he leaves at 10:59 and all of us including our producer like that is phenomenal it's all tight it is the most buttoned up tidy phenomenal but yesterday was the first time in he's not been here seven years he's been here what five cam first time we ever got to talk to him and with Cam Rising yep yeah in five years and we've done you've done lots of games a lot of games and he just did not want to and the Sid over there jordy's like it's funny these guys get to their final year and they're like you know maybe maybe I should talk to the medy after all this time so it was his decision not to talk yeah he just didn't and that's totally fine abut it's not hard like they're not they don't have to do anything for us it's it's just great when we get to tell more of their story and we get to meet him and spend time with him and and he was so good with us yesterday too but I got after him I said hey cam I know you're like 30 so you had to have watched Gruden's QB Camp back in the day remember remember guden so freaking good XY banana or something yes and the first two like the first two years of it it was gold it's like this is the and then it started to kind of yeah but and I said to cam I said I said do you watch it he's like oh yeah I love that I said who did he always show on that like who did he love to highlight it was always the sheriff Payton right and he'd get that face of groes he's like look at the sheriff look at this guy yeah you GNA go up against the sheriff you try to beat the sheriff right you get all intense and he'd say you know what the sheriff did played every play why hands because you and I were there there were games he didn't get hit we played the Jets we played the Jets who Blitz with Rex Ryan all this crazy stuff and I'm sitting there a day after the game watching with the whole team as we did there or the whole offense I'm like I don't know how I did that and if they ever thought I could go in the game and do one 1000th of what he just did every check every assignment every protection see things before they happen get the ballum I've ever seen in my life it was he was so incredible because his toughness was playing every play of every game of every practice of everything until his neck blew up for like 12 years yeah I said cam protect yourself what are you doing running into four Southern Utah guys you know like seriously what are you doing and he was like I don't think he knew what I like whoa is is this how these maybe I was smart avoiding these for a long time and he's like well I mean it was kind of hard it was between the tackles and I know when I get out I'm like no hogwash stop it toughness is not running into people in at this stage of your career right and pton would always Advanced AG pton would always say this like about Steve McNair Steve McNair air McNair like always got like lauded is the toughest and the baddest look at how but all he did was run into contact and he would miss games every year and he would break down like that's not tough you and I were around Payton you want to know tough tough is that freaking guy that didn't miss a practice snap because he knew like being available is the most important thing the most important ability of all and for cam my gosh like get down you don't have to prove toughness to anybody anybody yeah just got to be there to play the next play play the next play so so Payton was unbelievable but but let me ask you a serious question thank you Captain Obvious could you could you throw but but you threw a better pass than pton you threw a you know a little wobbly ball a little wobbly I never saw him throw a spiral but his anticipation I know was that's hard to beat yes it was it was silly and he had a weird connectivity with his receivers yeah Weir because Brock was talking about it just the the usage the first thing when I stepped on Camp was watching him and Marvin and just the and then Reggie and then Dallas and it just like they're connected on 100 passes a day yeah yeah they just practice so hard and again availability like yeah the only way that happens is that they're available year round and they just work and work and work and work and work and and who knows if that was really part of edine or or those guys DNA but you had to make it part of your DNA if you're were going to be around pton like you had no choice it was a lot of Marvins to be honest with you Marvin was wired that way like Marvin was he was a little different dude now he had like three phones before any of us had one phone um he was a little a little different bird but that dude worked and was meticulous and I think it was you and him right Hans that broke the body fat measurement because remember we had to sit in that like Mora Mindy egg egg and yeah it was like a the Pod was wor and Marvin came out of that thing and it was negative and it was like you can't be negative how's a human being have negative body fat but I do remember John talking about it all the time this is unhealth and then he's eating like hot dogs and nachos remember he had a because I I locked right next to him and he had a deal with um tasty cakes and his locker was packed with tasty cakes and I could grab any TA Tasty Cake I wanted except for the the white ones it was a white covered chocolate he's like don't touch those those are mine but he would he would just sit there and pound tasty cakes trying to keep fat on he just couldn't keep the fat on so okay as you look as you prepare for this this game this week y I've been harping on this thing that I think is a big concern for for Utah and and as if you've watched film and you've been up with the team and you've seen some guys have you've been able to identify the next great Utah running back on that roster and can Utah survive this year and win the Big 12 Conference if they don't develop this Utah Run game it is a sum of all the parts and that's okay I think in the running back like money ball they do it through the aggregate yeah I mean you got a package for dejon and here's here's a package for Glover and here's a package for maai and I think it's going to be because it it you know it Stanley size he's not going to run between the tackles Kyle was even asked about that this week like n not not every down back that's okay right we he can be a third down back he can be a space back he can be a speed back Glover's got he got some Force to him got some Mass to him be a short yardage goal line kind of guy obviously makai's very versatile probably again we had it's going to be fun for us this year we have Daniel Jeremiah on our show every week and he was great we're talking about prospects and there's blue prospects and then there's purple like Blues are blue chips like you know DK maaf the only blue on the Seahawks yeah they got a bunch of purple and can those purple emerge to be blue I think for the running back room they're just kind of all purple and that's okay you can't have one you can't have two but if you have three or four purples that's pretty good what about Baylor with um Reese and Pender grass it are they just kind of the same purple category I think so they're nice onew punch uniquely different their sies they're line yeah youah better get after them tomorrow yeah that old line like I don't know what you look at H when you watch tape but over the years I kind of start to look at this stuff and there's just some Tails yeah and like when you're polling and you don't hit that guy like that's a problem that's a problem but what what I did see that number 79 I think he's the right tackle left tackle is it left tackle number 79 79 left tackle he was bullying Tarlton yeah he was you know he was Gra dudes and shaking them around that this is a crew that pad level high ferocity minimal this is a crew that tuna and OU and I thought fono looked good off of The Edge and I think you know Van's a little more motivated because that guy is got like yeah so this is a crew that I don't know what the over under is I think just going in my gut would say maybe under on this one because I think both defenses have an opportunity to take advantage of some pieces and you know I was looking at Randa Through The Years two things jump out Baylor the last two years like 120th 125th on third down atrocious Dave Aranda in all of his years is a DC at Utah State then in Wisconsin and LSU averaged about 15th in the country a bunch of times we're top five on third down he's really good like Morgan is yeah and then the other one is they limit the big play Utah State at Wisconsin LSU every one of those stops he had a top five couple years top five in limiting the big play you're not going to get what you got last week with a guy running uncovered you're going to have to earn a little bit and therefore those tackles those two young tackles better step up brock watch one thing for me as you're making this call because he's a homegrown kid and his mild teammate's son Smith Snowden is going to be moving over and feeling that and he's gonna be on KRON Jackson I I gotta imagine we're gonna see him on KRON Jackson I would imagine yeah and he is a home girl well it might be can because of their and I think because of their Tempo I don't think you can do that these guys are going to play really fast they're super funky their formation in the boundary like you start chasing those kind of matchups and I don't think any of those guys should really scare you that much it might be rotational yes and and those are kind of your top two guys right KRON and Hawkins I think so yeah the other guy Monteray has been there forever but they're more just speed and space but watch I want you to watch him oh he's good because he's young kid I watched him last year as a true freshman I'm like technically sound oh they know yeah I'm excited to see it's fun to sit with Morgan and those guys cuz we've done it now for I think my 18th year doing this my six at Fox I think I was 12 at ESPN and you sit down long enough with these guys right and and they're so good you like him being at Fox oh they're awesome treating you good benetti is yeah he's he's just different he's yeah honestly he is like Payton and I don't say that very often Payton's brain worked differently his ability to process you an old QB his ability to process and his notes it would be 40 pages of notes I try to be all organized less is more try to you know like two pages so I could try to remember these two pages of slant blunt check with me alert quick game all this crazy stuff Payton's got like honestly hieroglyphics of 40 pages but his brain could just process benetti is the same way yeah Benet is the only guy I've ever worked with every one of them they're all talented Joe Davis talented Joe tester I love them all and we're all different just like there's different analysts but all of them would be like okay what are the shots right say the director like hey here's the shots here's our first open here's this or that benetti wants none of he just does it all in the cuff like his processing is just it's just different how's Brady going to do in the booth really good yeah he's going to have to learn to talk less yeah which is that's not an easy thing to do I still haven't learned in 18 years but you say really interesting stuff yeah Brady does too so I yeah Brady did a couple demos did a UFL shouted with people on it that I know on their crew and they're like he's really good and what's really fun is I guess they did you know I don't know if I should share this or not but I will um it's always better to ask forgiveness sure it's always better based on the way you guys all pick on each other we're gonna be okay yeah I guess uh you know one of the games he was like running a little bit long and Burkhart who's like the nicest guy ever was just finally like okay let's see where where we're at here and he like got after him he's like Tom I need the ball back like I need the ball you know and Brady is like okay awesome instead of being sensitive and like who are you he was like dude coach me yeah and Coach me hard like I want to be good at this and for a guy of his esteem you know with that wiring it's just like him and pton were exactly the same my brother backed up Tom for three years in New England I did Payton twice you know back then it's just they're the same guy same wiring same Brilliance same work ethic um pretty cool for both of us so Lloyd sends us uh the uh podcast numbers uh for the company and H and I were always like oh man we're doing great man we're like you know second third fourth in the company we're like oh man we're doing great and then we see Brock and sock we're like oh boy we ain't catching you got you got a cousin that works in numbers that like cracks codes like you figured out the algorithm man I don't know what you guys got going on up there but outside of just some great quality content but holy smokes yeah you're not even give us a number we can chase like like I mean you're like John Stockton's assist number like let us be a least in the ballpark what do you got going on with there what do you mean he's smart and he's interesting yeah unlike you too how long you been doing it so Sal and I are like 15 and a half years off and on we just hit 10 yeah it's pretty cool yeah 10 it's pretty cool all right I have one I have one last question for you hey uh we got to go to break in the echelon of college football coaches where would you put Kyle Whittingham like all time or like right now yeah I mean all time what I see today seven of his 20 seasons are double digit win Seasons that is freaking impressive across now three conferences oh boy I mean obviously the Sabin and the champion all Tom Osborne right I mean there's just there's kind of that well there's guys yes there's just kind of a an ilk that has all these titles uh of guys that haven't won a national title kind of like a golfer that hasn't w a major yeah he's right there so he's like you're like the Sabin in the podcast world and these guys are so so you would put coach Winningham in like these guys sure hey we'll take that yes I'm not I'm not hating on that at all no not at all yeah we we feel good about it just we're trying to chase the I don't know the numbers are ridiculous I know it's just ridiculous stupid numbers hey thanks for coming for man appr guys in person you bet you hands and Scotty Frank Dolce hanging out with us you preview show we'll wrap this bad boy up next 975 the ekl Sports Zone
