American Reacts - Gord Downie's The Secret Path, Part 3. See Below for Parts 1 and 2.

thank you [Music] what's up my Canadian cousins so this is the third uh video in the series that I'm doing on the secret path uh by Gore County before I get going I want to say a couple of words um you know I guess it was two days ago I posted the first video in this series and the amount of viewers uh only equals in the hundreds 500 something at this point and and very slowly moving up and I'm a little bummed about that but I want to explain why it is nothing whatsoever to do with ego I don't care I'm a small Channel I realize that some of my videos are are appealing to a niche audience and I'm not doing some of the wider appeal stuff I get deeper into some topics and uh some of my videos are a little bit longer and not everybody wants to watch longer videos but regardless and I'm certainly not doing it for money either I mean I don't monetize anything I most of my videos uh I use um copyrighted material so you know those are demonetized and the money goes directly to the um person who created the intellectual property as it should be and and regardless I would never want to earn any money uh on a video such as this one um I'm bummed because I think it is an extremely important topic and I was hoping more people would be interested in it so that we could have thoughtful discussions about it um you know it affects look it's it's Truth and Reconciliation right it's what we have to do in order to move forward and I'm not as a American judging Canada as a country look at our history we did we did the same and worse um to our in indigenous peoples and you know particularly residential schools and we ended them earlier I I kind of looked up the history but that's nothing to be proud of um how Americans have handled um indigenous affairs really depends on political will and and who's in the White House you know certain party has done better than another party um with it but you know we are far far from getting to a point where there is true reconciliation and where we're on a path to recovery and I think you know the same is true in Canada I think Canada has done you know uh has really taken this on in a very vigorous way I can tell you that the current administration of the White House appointed um the first Native American to a cabinet position Deb Holland is the Secretary of the Interior and that is the cabinet post that is responsible for uh the reservations in Native American um relations with the federal government and has embarked on a commission to look at residential schools to find um out who you know were there create a better record of it um get testimony testimonials and testimony where possible to find the remains of children who died in the residential schools and to reinter them on their on Native lands um to the extent possible and with all you know rituals and with respecting whatever nation's customs and rituals would uh dictate what what happens there and so you know I just find it to be a very important topic that I kind of wish there had been more uh attention uh moreover you know I'm putting in the link in the description the Gord Downey and chanye Weston when Jack fun um and I'm hoping that if I got more attention uh people might you know click the link and check out the chat that particular charity and decide if they would like to contribute to it and support it um and so that you know that was important to me as well and you know anyone who likes and respects scored Downey I wish I had known about him during his lifetime um you know I think should take a hard look at what he did in the last year of his life I think he was very proud of it he devoted that last year of his of his life knowing he was dying soon to this cause um and after I'm done watching this video I am going to look at as as a few of you have suggested to me the um ceremony uh when where Downey received the Order of Canada uh I hear it's very touching and beautiful and I um I have no doubt that that's true and I'm looking forward to reacting to that the last thing I would say is I'm preaching to the choir because those of you who are watching this um do care about it and I also want to thank you so much for watching this and sharing this with me and uh and you're a very wonderful thoughtful comments I um more than a lot of videos they're they're meaningful to me um and if I didn't say so already aside from the subject matter this is just a brilliant work of art musically and um you know in terms of the artwork and the melding of the two which I've mentioned in the prior videos so it's it somewhat ironic that uh the priests are forcing them to do that when uh Halloween although it's all Hollows even it's the day before um All Saints Day is essentially all about pagan ritualistic uh rituals hey they wish me plain ordinary death said he'd be back after I escaped [Music] oh I've seen how they are and it all sell their songs and little bits and pieces till they get on [Music] all shelter souls in bits and pieces until they get old ER [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] I'll go back foreign [Applause] what do you think the symbolism of this is you know it's like they just recall I quoted the line that he just said before losing their soul um gradually one piece at a time you think that the this the symbolism is maybe that they feel like they're by having their identity forcely stripped from them that they're being turned into something grotesque [Applause] foreign [Music] I've noticed throughout this that the you keep hearing the calling of a raven or black crow in the background um throughout throughout this movie and now you know it's becoming a more direct symbol um The Raven the crow always sort of a symbol of ominous things to come symbol of death wow thank you [Music] football [Music] here we go I'll just close my eyes I'll just catch my breath it is the only place to be I got lots of time my whole life ahead this is the only place to be um don't have much to say it's not at all I I'm just somewhat shocked by um the way looking at art and art artists guess rendition of what happened could make you feel so strongly um and uh I I think of I think I'm gonna give myself a minute to come back for a second to give my final thoughts before the fourth segment which I think will be the shortest okay my friends uh so thank you thank you thank you for sticking with me uh those of you who have on this journey uh whoo it's just so incredibly touching and sad um as I was shutting off the video I saw that it's gonna go straight back into real life and so my assumption is that it's going to go back into a gourd with uh Charlie's Family and that's probably where it'll end and so that's what I'll do in the fourth segment and uh you know I just mentioned earlier that about what uh the United States is doing about you know with the commission uh and secretary Holland the secret Secretary of the Interior I just did want to say that a news article I read about it is that you know we're doing it here now on the residential schools um because we're we're following the lead that uh Canada took on that um so I just wanted to acknowledge that I think it was important to acknowledge that I also think that the Truth and Reconciliation process in Canada with um you know sort of public hearings and testimonials is important and I would like to see more of that done here okay my friends uh I think part four will be tomorrow all right so I'll see you then my friends take care
