[Music] [Music] [Music] hello and welcome back to another edition of the Oola seminal Sidelines my name is Pat Burnham and I am joined by Oola recruiting analyst Charles fishbine and if I look in our studio our uh Ireland Studio it looks like we have Jerry cut standing outside a bar in Dublin Ireland so we're gonna let Jerry in real quick but we're going to talk about what Jerry's doing how many guinnesses he's had uh and Shota Jameson and then we're going to talk to fish a little bit about uh uh recrui and then we're going talk a little bit Georgia Tech so let's let Jerry in from Ireland he's got friends Jerry hey Pat how you doing man I am not doing as good as you what what is Happ hey so we're at uh we're here in h Dublin and I'm joined by two former seminal uh Rick Parker Clint parker1 I assume that I got news I got breaking news all right we've been break we we everybody's been wrong on this point and this is not the first International G football game for the seals it's not uh no uh 1969 our freshman team from Florida State played the National University of Mexico in the Olympic Stadium where they had the 68 Olympics which played them 1969 and beat their ass beat their bu hey we're we're on YouTube it's a cussing free I mean it's a cuss cussing welcome program oh man yeah so and I didn't know that all this time man I would have been cussing away so what is so I've heard that Double's been taken over by FSU fans is it true 100% 100% so talk about you all's experience here so far oh it's been unbelievable seol's everywhere a little bit of rain doesn't bother anybody and uh we walk into this bar and there's Jerry and you know we spent a $100 to get over here so he'd buy us one beer well I hope it was an expensive beer well you know it's it's it's raining a little bit not it's you know here in Ireland it it it it just uh it's constant drizz yeah it just has and uh I I guess it's in the 60s right now but you probably in the low high 50s maybe but it's uh it's great to be here in uh Ireland and uh hopefully we can kick some butt this Saturday looking forward to it hey I just got a question have have any of the three of you guys played any golf in Ireland this week any golf got okay y y'all just arriving in town all right so what what has been the what has been the uh how many Georgia Tech fans have y'all seen and kind of what's been the your overall impression of Dublin you seen anything that surprised you about you weren't expecting about Ireland or Dublin Dublin's gonna be great we've seen three and a half Georgia Tech fans and that's it I figured it might be like a home game yeah sel's own dubl yeah good good uh so what is planing for the ne you got we're right at 45 44 hours and 53 minutes from kickoff uh so what's what's the game plan for you guys over the next day and a half uh a couple more pubs and uh a lot more seol Jerry's got a thing going tomorrow at the uh at Oscars and then after that there's a cheerleading thing and then we're going to go do the uh walk victory walk we do the victory walk with the team and then after that there's a um Jeff Co ha has got something going Jerry and Jeff Co ha's got something going so we're gonna do that we got a pretty busy day tomorrow afternoon yeah well uh go ahead Jerry I I I just want to uh emphasize a point I want you guys to talk about this on Friday before every home game Mike has what he calls the victory walk Victory where he brings in all the former players Like These Guys these guys played back in the 70s 6970 7172 yep did y'all play with uh Jimmy Everett by chance no he was after us Jimmy was probably a freshman when we were a senior yeah but we came 1969 with the first four black players that actually played JT Thomas and Eddie McMillan Charlie hunt and Bobby Anderson we all came in the 1969 okay right who was the head coach then Bill Peterson that's what I thought for two years we came in with Gary huff and Barry Smith bar Smith and Gary Paris and uh a bunch of good guys just really really good guys so you no Clint a green uh a green cap uh let me see if I I keep moving it the wrong way there we go Clint right here he's wearing his green Florida State cap that freshman group back then was called The Greens the green turds all right and and what what is the story behind that well we wore green jerseys because we were dummies you back then freshman could not play uh Varsity yeah so we were we were the scout team part of the scout team we weree green jerseys if you're a freshman and then the orange jerseys were the uh the Scout teams they were the red shirt guys that played on the scout team which Calvin Patterson was a was there but any rate it was uh and then I think we got our names for from parcel or no it was Bob Haron oh Harvey says Harvey all right you greeny turds get on over here how great was that har Harvey was Harvey oh my God Harvey the pet knows Harvey P Wally coach there oh yeah well well Harvey would say you're stealing somebody's food if a player was putting out you know as good as he should oh my God y he was special he was real special I'm just glad he was my direct coach well I always thought it was funny because uh when obviously when he came off the field he ended up kind of being the uh de facto kicking coach I've never he always used to follow those kickers up and punters up and down that third practice field when my father first started coaching FSU and of course uh you know uh he was he was he was great to me I love being around coach Harbison he was fun guy always had a great story to tell so hey Pat you know the thing was and Pat you know this U you know for the younger fans who don't know Harvey uh Bob was the defensive coordinator I believe on that 64 team yeah was arguably the best defense we we had until Mickey got there and maybe ever I mean in terms of points I think you guys only gave up like 90 some points that year well when we were we only gave up like 11 or 12 for our team yeah that was a while back but 64 was the the class that kicked everybody's back yeah beat beat Florida for the first time but but for the younger fans I want them to know about harves that Pat you'll remember this when we played uh we played uh Auburn in thatl in 198 Bob was off the staff for about already off the staff about years and uh seven of those recruits that played in that Auburn started that were harbon recruits Sanders Odell Haggin Fon Thompson dedric Dodge uh it was an unbelievable crew and and you know I think your dad might agree with me on this harberson might have been we ever well I mean he is he is a guy that's discovered Dion for Florida State right he was the guy that discovered probably put him way up already that wasr that was the class that now Mark Salva who I'll see later tonight Mark was in the 84 class and he'll argue that the 84 class was substanti yeah just ask just ask here Pat Carter that same question yes that's true but but here's the reason and and Mark makes a very good point of this is you know recruiting classes often times as fish will attribute are built you know based upon the line and that 84 class had some great linemen in it and uh and so uh the 85 class complemented the 84 class and and and I agree with Mark on that that the combination of 84 and 885 uh is what built the dynasty well this year we I think we've got a great line this year it's GNA make a big difference especially in this rain yeah especially in this R yeah I think you're I think you're going to see both teams try to run the living piss out of the ball on Saturday I like it look got a good defense yes yes sir I wanted to you know I made a point to bring this up because you guys are going to be talking about recruiting on this particular podcast and evaluation is the key to everything isn't it fish oh there's no question uh it's the most important part of the process you're not GNA win many ball games if you don't evaluate well I had uh these guys have done a very good job of it the coach that mentored me when I first started the i in 82 was was uh Jean McDow who you know left and took the head job at University Central Florida and was replaced by Pat's dad Wally Burnham wow and uh je recruited me Jean recruited and Jean and TK weather all recruited me in Daytona back in 19689 Really T was TK a coach oh yeah well he was uh he was our academic advisor he was our acade after he graduated yeah he became he was part of the staff yes okay all right all right all right yeah so yeah it's interesting and you know we were just talking about that game the inter First International game was really the Greenies 1969 69 fall of 69 September playing at 5,000 feet in Mexico City Mexico City where they had the Olympics is where we played the football game was was was that a cool Stadium to play in I mean I've seen it on television before it looks like it back in its Heyday it looked like a great place to our venue for sports I'll tell you what when we got there it's like a mild dad gum high and we were sucking hide [Laughter] air anyway we did survive see I gotta tell you P love I'm more I'm more concerned about y'all surviving today with Jerry still early that's right it's still early hey Pat you'll love this your high school football coach was a member of that greeny team Steve Harden oh don't tell me that oh rest in peace Steve Harden rest in peace yeah been I had more tobacco spit in my face by that man when he was chewing me out when he's grabbing my face mask and he had he he always had he was always had that uh big thing of red man in that left jaw and uh I always thought it was funny so when we watched film in his office as a team he would not use a cup as a spitter he would take the film empty film container that's what he sped in and then he'd have to watch it out before he can put the film back in but yes I have many fine memories of uh coach Harden and we had we had actually had his uh greatest player at Lincoln High School on our show yesterday uh Kevin Carter and uh Kevin was very gracious to join us yesterday but yeah I yeah I hey what what how Wild was coach Harden in high in college because he's he seemed like he'd been a pretty wild guy they've already told me a that would be an understatement you ever remember a guy named Larry Strickland oh yes I do I very well oh my God help us Larry Strickland was one of we had two linebackers back in that day we had Larry Strickland and was the Dan whst I saw Dan's son yesterday Kane so Clint was one of the three linebackers on that group yeah talking about Steve he was was um unconventional probably got he probably had to run more stadiums than any of the rest that's all I'm gonna say something tells me that he spent a lot more time on Tennessee Street than he did most other places what was that place yeah he spent more time at kin than he did in study hall well I guess I could blame my kin's appearances in college on him it just it's a lincol thing it's it's a Lincoln thing so Pat uh maybe you got your taste for uh a little dip from that secondhand tobacco from Ste it's it it's probably it's probably that no doubt because uh that's one of my uh when when I think about that guy and Kevin and I were talking about him yesterday that's one of the first things I think about is uh when he get after us he he grab us by the face mask and you knew it wasn't so much that that you hated it was the it was the flying Che in the back I think I had I think that was my first ever chew of Red Man Came directly from Steve Harden but uh but yeah proud had such a great it was uh very challenging for us back in 69 and 70 and whatever but he you all had you all had some great teams so we we had some te first vable 1971 that is that is coola State Danny White and it came down to the last 30 seconds but Gary Huff was a MVP and we lost the game but we had three receivers over a 100 yards receiving that that that was Rhett Dawson Kent Gatos and Barry Smith Smith yeah yeah uh play all with Barry back in uh eighth grade down in Co Gable I I saw my first Florida State game in person at sundevil stadium in 1984 what was a crazy shootout it seems like every time Florida State plays in sundevil stadium going back whether it's a Fiesta Bowl or against Arizona State it's always a shootout against somebody a great time y yeah I I love for our older fans listening to this uh Steve was uh before he was at Lincoln he was at Delray Beach High School and and he coached one of the best cornerbacks in Florida State history and Bobby Butler who was an option quarterback they won the state championship at Del re and uh for State recruited him and he played quarterback us Atlanta played for the Falcons for years AB been a wildly successful human being hey was was Mike muy on y'all's teams Mike Dy muy a guy named Mike muy from Tampa he might have been a little bit before you guys because uh his son's one of my best friends he played at Florida State got hurt had to end up going uh and just being a regular student but uh I just wanted to throw that I don't know if you guys were familiar with Mike I think he might have been a little bit before you guys hey let me pay off something before we go uh I was talking about the fact that uh before on Friday before every home game Mike norell has created a tradition that they call the victory wall career here uh was uh let me see if I this the right way to catch Rick Rick was the president of the uh club for years and uh Mike organized the the former athletes and you know Mark Salva does this every he'll do it tomorrow yeah with guys us yeah he shows up every time and and uh Mike is he and and we're doing it here in Dublin Mike's doing it in Dublin with every [Music] home they they have the victory walk walk up and down the field here in the way games but we do in tahasia we get behind the the team the the current team lines up on the goal line we line up five yards behind them nobody talking norvel gives us instructions visualize ref visualize reflect on what yall did and they what some curreny also and we walk the entire field and at the end of the field we each one of us introduces ourselves what we played what position where we are what year he wants what year we were there yeah he wants us to know he wants us to connect and he wants us to stay connected so he really is working for team I mean team unity absolutely and it's working really good and it it's it's incredible I mean we we Clint and I missed very few of them and uh we've been doing this I've known Rick for now 55 years when we first came up in 69 and that's what he's talking about yeah Brotherhood and unity absolutely I know I know the former players I have talked to that I obviously I went to uh when I finished my degree at Florida State I knew a lot of the players and they come back including Salva they they think it's one of the greatest things that Mike has done trying to bring trying to bring the players back into the program yes sir and I've had current players tell me I think I think Jerry kicked out Jerry I think he just froze up on us Jerry he still with us yeah I don't think so man I think that they kick they're they're having a good time though let me see let me take him off the move him and put him back on well now he's gone for good that's all good all right we'll see if he pops back in so we got an empty box all right there he is yeah hey Jerry we lost we lost you dude I'm getting I'm getting seasick man we lost you Jerry for a second hey so we were we were just Reminiscing on the fact that RI Lee who you all may know I know R his daddy uh his daddy owned the beer distributorship back in Tallahassee back when these guys played well let me tell you this uh there was another guy named Mike Norman had Beer Barn there we got a discount I'm familiar this was before nil there was nil before nil there's always there's always been in real quick before we sign off Rick uh you know we just talked about the culture that Mike's built and uh you know I I think it travels it's it is unbelievable live inck but Mike comes in and he just hollers hey everybody good morning and I mean everybody reacts and hugs and it's just I mean he is the most awesome bring together team that I mean guy that that brings together a team he's got it Whatever It Takes I mean you would you agree with all that absolutely uh he's the most uh intense compassionate and he wants to win and if you do it his way you're going to win if you don't do it his way take a heke and he don't want anybody around that doesn't want to win so that's the bottom line and uh just so proud of the young man well listen I'm looking forward to seeing him do what he does best on Saturday afternoon and that's call up an offensive play or too I'm looking forward to seeing that he's uh I think he's one of the better play cers in all college football and I can't wait to watch them get after get Georgia Tech on Sat yeah let's do let's kick some a man all right you guys talk about the next uh generation of players and we're gonna sign out ding all right hey and just remember guys pub crawl is a term it's not it's not supposed to actually be reality it's supposed to It's supposed to it's just a term you know don't take it to don't read too much into the the term pub crawl but hey you guys have a good good time and uh I think if each of you guys will have a Guinness to for me I'd appreciate it we'll do it hey thanks so much really appreciate hey guys thanks for join joining us thanks for hopping in and uh sharing those stories that we haven't heard and uh we'll have to have you guys back on sometime because I would love to hear more about the uh trip to Mexico and uh some of the old stories about who you guys played with because uh some of the names are familiar for me especially like Dan Whitehurst I knew Dan really well so I'd love to hear those stories sometime well let me tell you what uh Larry Strickland was one of a kind also you need to understand that I can't imagine the threee of you guys hey can y play with Cofield we played We we played for we played for Bill parcel for fori field was a year behind us all right I run into Randy quite regularly and Randy's a great Storyteller when he get to remember what he's what he's talking about Randy was a great player he Wasing in the NFL oh yeah yeah all right guys well hey y'all have fun and uh are we gonna do you are you doing something by yourself tomorrow from Dublin uh I'm available to do whatever okay all right all right all right yeah I didn't know whether we had something going on tomorrow we'll talk about later oh no we we have a couple events tomorrow that's right Oscars sold out and uh so I I can't take anymore but we're going to do at 7 pm if you hear this and you're in Dublin come by the Temple Bar in at 7 pm and uh AOL will buy a bear a $100 bear that's right right after uh we're we're doing kind of a a a runup to the Jeff Coan show at uh inside seminal football uh doublin Edition that starts at 8:00 pm so it's if you're here in uh Dublin at 7 p.m. stop by the uh Temple Bar in and uh you know let me know you're there and uh I get the first P hey have you have you seen my buddy Marvin Jones senior there no but Hey listen I haven't seen Marvin senior but uh Mar Marvin's uh mother is coming to the lunch bringing a couple of her friends with all right all right all right guys y y'all have fun we'll talk to y'all later all right yes sir all right fish what's going on in uh Sunny South Florida there in well I thought it was sunny it's going to be sunny Saturday and it's it's pouring down here is it really yeah I was in some water today all right well listen uh we I you know Jerry is having a really good time there and I wish we were both there having a good time with him but we're here talking ball so let's I I wouldn't be standing up and I wouldn't be in the video I could promise you that I'd be at the back of the bar in the corner asking for mommy you'd already be trying to crawl your way back to the hotel I probably would too i' probably probably I can't a couple guinnesses and I'm freaking liquored up man I'm not I can't you guys would all drink me under the table if Jerry had taken me my Bart tab would have been more than my flight no mine would have been about I don't know about 50 pounds or whatever they charge I I don't know the conversion rate yeah all right so fish we haven't talked to you in a while it's kind of been slow on the recruiting front for the most part uh obviously High School football's cranking back up this week in Earnest I think all the regular season games in state of Florida Georgia are uh going to start today or today actually yeah because I think there's a couple FSU prospects that are playing in the game on ESPN two tonight we'll talk about a little bit about that later uh but kind of the uh reason we brought you on because earli this week you wrote an article article called what now and this was after uh FSU a lost out on Josh Petty to Georgia Tech and Bryce Fitzgerald to Miami and uh you know we you kind of ran through the roster and what you thought Florida State's needs were there 13 commitments right now uh we have 22 players are going to be lost to graduation and then of course as youed so well put and we don't want to we don't want to we'll get more into this uh later in the year but obviously there's some guys that can increase their draft status uh guys like Josh farmer darl Jackson uh AZ Thomas Pat pton Uh fantell cypers those guys may be a part of the graduation class so that gets you to about 27 uh and then that we haven't even started talking about the portal yet we're not because that alarms people when we start talking about the portal before the season starts but uh if you go to thea.com uh and go to our message board uh fish list about 12 candidates for the portal that he thinks uh would be guys that might consider the portal depending on how this year plays out uh and so I want to start with a question from one of our listeners uh one of our our viewers or listeners uh fish William McMillan uh I'm very concerned about our recruiting class is his comment uh how what would you how would you react to that question or statement and what would you tell William as far as uh what you're thinking right now with FSU 2023 uh sorry 2025 recruiting class yeah I think the one thing is is you know I doubted these guys early on because the lack of ties to Florida and this and that and up to this point they've proven me wrong and proven them you almost I hate to say the word trust the coaches because I'm not into that that's almost like a lazy answer but I do believe these guys deserve the benefit of the doubt that as the season goes on and they have a good season that recruiting will pick up and they will start to uh land some kids and and even guys that are going to flip uh I know we've discussed this that I I think University of Florida there's some guys on their uh commitment list right now with Wiggins also Joshua Mo uh that are are going to still be available now some of these guys are going to be locked in but if they have the season that many expect we're talking 9 10 11 wins I think even with a nine and three season they've done enough the last few years that nine and three are better that they're continuing to build this roster to what you want eventually a national championship caliber team yeah and uh you know listen we we also know Mike's going to go into the portal and the the the long the for how I guess I'll ask you this question how many more at thir if they stay at 13 and you and I have both heard Rumblings about two kids on Florida State's commit list right now uh you know uh Kevin W came out and told the Georgia rival that you know he wasn't quite ready to call his uh his uh recruitment recruiting process over uh and they just lost a def defensive tackle and Christian Garrett or Christian green uh so there's some rumors there that Kevin may be uh somebody that's I I have not heard he's wavering he but he did say that it's not quite over yet so if they got if they if they hold on to the 13 they got now how many other High School prospects would you project at least an approximation of how many other High School prospects you don't think they'll try to sign I mean with the net that they've thrown and you know they really haven't expanded the uh recruiting board as far as we know they may have behind what we've seen but um I believe that it's between 17 and 19 I think that that I think if they get to 19 you're talking six more kids yeah I do think they're GNA land Byron Lewis I think that's the one kid that's in the class and I still believe guys like Wiggins and other D tackle from that up in the hand handle those two guys I think wiggin's going to end up in their class when it's all said and done and there'll be at least two or three other guys and we'll see what happens I mean the we've seen a lot of guys have good senior years um that weren't getting recruited before I know everybody thinks recruiting just has ended now but there's still a lot of football to be played this fall um guys are going to pop up I there was a kid U at Monarch High School that's from Georgia that popped up uh this kid parum that is a big receiver I could see him uh getting interest from Florida State if he puts up a big season he's originally from Georgia so I think there's options it's just we haven't seen them yet yeah and we did see them expand the defensive back uh pool by one they offered a kid out of fluger Texas on uh Tuesday or Wednesday a kid by the name of Jason Stokes Jr who was committed to Utah and uh fish I think if you get a chance to watch his huddle highlights you'll be very pressed uh so you know they have lost out on a number of DBS uh moving you know Ben Hanks Jr committed not surprisingly to his father's Alum moer uh Florida earlier in the month and several other guys have got come off the board too at least for now so they have H fluger Weiss High School Jason Stokes uh watched his uh tape again this morning he's very good uh you know a lot of people want to know about the offensive tackle position I know two guys that you have eyes on after Josh Petty fell off the board and Ty Hayward Max Buchanan all these other kids uh Daniel Pierre Lewis from Simo Ridge High School and I've actually heard Atkins talk a little bit about him uh he said like U well and then you got Shawn perau uh from Riverwood who uh to me he's listed to 65270 uh you know he's been in Camp a couple times fish he has excellent feet uh he moves really well laterally in pass protection uh I think the question I have with him and I think you do too and it's the same one we have with Josh Petty exactly how big can he get when you look at his frame yeah I I personally feel that if they're G to take somebody they've got to spend the money on a BigTime kid I don't if it's one of those kids from Texas like one of them committed to Missouri I think they're going to have to go in and overspend on a tackle they need offensive tackles you've you know other than Simmons they don't really have traditional tackles do they want to continue to play guards out of tackle do you want want to move an audre AO who's done very well uh from everything we've heard on the inside do you want to move he could be the next Center next year do you want to change your offensive line when you really need to go out and sign a traditional tackle I I still believe they need an elite tackle um that's just my belief and I think they have to they they're G to get that out of the high school ranks I don't believe you're going to get that out of the portal yeah uh it'll be and listen I listen and I will say this I think you'll agree with me uh and you know big guys offensive and defensive linemen sometimes you can find a diamond and rough late because they're still growing into their bodies in their sophomore and Junior years and there's a lot of early decisions made in recruiting so I don't I'm not actually going to overreact to the where they are on the offensive tackle board because I think they will go out I think they'll comb uh wherever they have to comb and I think they'll find the guy and you do find a lot listen Chris Auto is a perfect example uh you you were the first guy out of anybody uh anybody that recruit in the recruiting business a coach or otherwise to talk about Chris AO and here we are as a red shirt freshman talking about him un seeding somebody in season because he's played up and down the line uh but he is a kid that grew into from a smaller town Key West uh and grew in you know guy that was had not quite grown into his body as a sophomore junior and we started watching his film after you told me about him and so I think and obviously we both agreed that they should offer him and they ended up offering and he's developed well uh I think there's a chance fish that they could might find another Andre a out there somewhere along the offensive line there's so many guys because they develop later um if you look a lot of high school guys they are 65 66 that and they're like 250 going in their senior year not every kid's 320 pounds I remember the Fisher guy that went to Central Michigan I think he was like the second or third pick um overall by Kansas City this a while back but he was like 66 but he was like 240 pounds and you just have to find those guys that have the body the length to develop now you also have to understand with the portal and everything with every kid wanting to jump in now that you just have to be patient both as a player and a coaching staff that you're going to have to develop those guys I still think there's room for development at college level with high school kids oh well sure I mean especially when kids have not fully grown into their bodies and get in the weight room and get proper coaching and all those kind of things uh all right so another position of concern for me in this class is inside and outside linebacker I mean obviously Florida state uses kind of a hybrid of the two in their new defense where you really don't have a old school Mike linebacker you won't guys that can run in both positions but you know they lost out on Tavon Wallace but you still have him listed along with TJ Alfred from Vero Beach who is scheduled to take an official visit to Florida state in the fall and you still have Ty Jackson from seminol Ridge on your list and like you said it's really hard to get an idea on what's going on with Ty Jackson but out of if they were going to be able to get two of those three guys who you think they have the best chances of Landing out of those three I mean Jackson I just don't he he goes to no camps he goes to he didn't go to any seven on sevens he didn't go to Under Armor rals um it's very very hard to tell with that kid I've heard Florida state was his team growing up and his family and then you know he hasn't been on campus we talk about it um a lot that these guys have to get on campus I think that TJ Alford he has somebody uh that is tied to Florida state that is helping him out at this time so that's why I believe Florida state has a legit shot um he has he has somebody that coaches them up and and trains them that is pro Florida State so I do believe that's going to help Florida State they just you know have to keep on him and I think Tavon Wallace the kid was all FSU I mean if there was one kid everybody missed on and it's not because our Intel it was Wallace he seemed like I hate to use the word lock because there are no locks in recruiting anymore but he was as close to someone you could write in pen and go yeah this kid was going to be in Florida State's class and he took everybody by surprise by picking Arkansas um I don't believe that that coach stats gonna I wouldn't be surprised if they have a new coach by week three or four um I no that Pitman may be the first coach and I hate to say that but he may be the first coach fired in season this year I think they're gonna have a rough season and I don't see that kid sticking to Arkansas when it all said and done yeah that one all that one surprised me out of all well in a negative way surprised me more than any other uh commit they did not get uh and of course the other way with Wy getting Wy but uh yeah listen I think there's a good chance that they Circle back there was absolutely no buzz from any of the three recruiting Services about Tavon Wallace going to uh Arkansas was all Florida State I mean just about everybody cross the board I think there might have been one that and I can't remember who the school was and it was one of those future cast crystal balls prediction things that the guy had put one in really early and never came back to change it but uh yeah I think they got a good chance to come back in on Tavon and I hope so because that that kid can run and he can hit all right so another guy you had on your list uh and he's not quite as hard to read as Ty Jackson he's been on canas a couple times and his last visit uh according to my sources went very very well he was on unofficial visit here in July and that's OS croma the running back from Leon Lee County Georgia uh it seems like Florida State and Georgia all the way for him with maybe alurn sneaking in there uh what do you think what do you think about OS at this point going start start of his senior season I mean going into the recruiting process early on I didn't think they had a shot then once again we've discussed this getting them on campus multiple times seemed to really like them I believe his mom's been on some of those visits and she likes what Florida state is selling this comes down to I believe um there's an opportunity for him at Florida State to get on the field earlier than most of these other schools even George and Auburn and that it's a comfort level you've heard it with him you hear the family stuff with him I believe Florida state has a legit shot uh you know the two players that they've zeroed in on are him and and Byron Lewis so the two of them uh being in this class would be huge I believe they'll get one of the two I think they have a better shot at Landing both than getting neither of them yeah uh no that well that'd be quite something they got both those kids to go along with Cam Davis and uh micaa Dany and uh Jaylen Lucas and who all return next year year uh that would that would be uh and actually well kaziah is G after this year Sam Singleton would be back so yeah they that'd be a pretty stacked room like it is this year uh now fish I don't know are you a big Watcher of high school football when it starts out early in the year on television like the ESPN games and ESPN 2 games yeah I mean I there's gonna be like five of them down here I believe Shaman and St Thomas are both going to be on this week and I'll be at the shaman game um you know you always hear about these other teams they come down in South Florida and how much hype they have and they and every year I hear how they're going to beat these teams and the games usually aren't either close or even competitive so once again these teams come down here this weekend we'll see what happens but usually these teams down south uh handle their business yeah and if you are for if you're a recruiting junkie and you want to watch some Florida State kids or kids that have Florida State offers uh now there's going to be a game tomorrow night too but tonight's game is Grayson Georgia versus Thompson High School in Alabama uh one of fsu's bigger 2026 outside linebacker defensive end targets is going to play in this game Tyler ainson he is been a he's he's a beast yeah he's been a regular visitor on Florida State's campus up until recently he had been on campus I don't think since about uh January maybe early February but he is a kid that was a regular on campus uh and a hell of a football player and then he's got a teammate named Anthony Davis who is a Rivals top 250 kid now Florida state has not offered him yet I saw him in the Atlanta Rivals Elite camp in April I think it's only a matter of time before Florida state offers him fish uh he has a he's really good off really quick off the ball smaller guy about 62 197 right now going into his junior year I think that's probably one of the questions on him but uh Elite get off uh at that camp and so if you're a Florida State fan uh those are the two kids that you want to keep eye on from Grayson on ESPN Tu tonight at 8:00 pm. and then of course the team they're playing Thompson Alabama High School uh you got 2025 Auburn kit Jared Smith plays on that team obviously he came in for an official visit uh this summer to Florida State and they lost out on him but obviously it's not December 4th yet so if you have any interest in watching him he he'll be on Thompson's team as will 22 27 offers at Florida State extended including the quarterback at Thompson Trent Seaborn who camped at Florida State and was offered a uh spot scholarship at Camp as was 2027 defensive end Cameron Pritchett so uh you certainly can check those guys out tonight uh and then tomorrow you've got uh Z Thomas and Byron Lewis and Brandon Bennett from American heris in Florida playing against Milton Georgia high school and that's ESPN at 7 o'clock and there's a 2027 receiver named grant havlin that plays for uh Milton and same thing he came and camped at Florida State this summer got an offer a couple days after that so there are some guys that are high on Florida State's board uh either for 2025 2026 or 2027 that'll be playing on television tonight and of course listen if you got Georgia public if you're one of the if you're listening to us and live in Georgia or north Florida you might have access to Georgia public television if you do they have Friday night games uh and I know there's a number of them this week that will feature uh Florida State prospects uh so busy weekend for football we won we only get to see one college football game obviously Florida State and Georgia Tech uh there's a couple small uh smaller or lesser known programs playing on uh Saturday afternoon there's going to be plenty of high school balls Saturday afternoon too all right fish so we are in the middle of or right start of the 2024 season uh obviously you have relationships with uh kids and coaches all over the uh United States um and um what do you know or or what either about the staff at Georgia Tech or the Personnel at Georgia Tech anybody stand out to you uh on that particular team well I mean bre key was uh at UCF when I first originally met coach oir he was on um his staff there he also was uh an old line coach at uh Alabama you know originally he was supposed to be the guy that took over for o but O's run at the end went South and they just clean shop and they ended up bringing in um Scott Frost at the time I believe it was yep so he's been around uh he's one of these Old School coaches he's he's built a really good program I never knew how he would do in college as a head coach because he's got a got a kind of different personality uh but he's sometimes it's fit you know Georgia Tech's an odd school um he's gone in there he's understood what you're supposed to do and how you can win they're a very good football team at the end of the season last year they played Georgia very well uh they they they had a nice run at the end of the year so I do believe that this Georgia Tech team's better than a lot of people think yeah listen he's one of the few former College offensive lineman as a head coach I think that uh there should probably be more more obviously I'm biased in that capacity but I think that they do bring a uh tougher mentality to your program uh you know listen everybody that plays football's relatively tough right you don't make you don't play college football uh at least back when Brent did uh you gotta be pretty you had to be pretty tough just to make it through practices uh listen he it's a totally different Georgia Tech culture than the one under Jeff Collins who uh was kind of more into the show more than substance he had the kids coming out and lifting weights on the sideline before games and had his two tight t-shirt on underneath his little vest that he wore over it now he's calling defenses for I believe Matt Brown at uh UNC so uh listen uh I know some people that know Brent they uh they talk well of him he is 11 and 10 at uh Georgia Tech taking over about the fifth game of the season from uh Jeff two years ago so this is his full second full season season uh he's obviously committed to the Run they were 12th nationally and running the ball last year uh now he's got a short up the defense they brought in some transfers fish including romelo height um and lay from Georgia and Vandenburg from Penn State and a couple other guys uh but listen they brought in they got a whole new staff on defense they brought in Tyler santui who was a defensive coordinator at Duke last year uh they also brought in with him and I'm assuming that uh Tyler SCI brought these guys in Jess Simpson Kyle Pope and Cory peoples they're going to go back to a 4 to5 front uh listen they were very poor on defense last year uh ranked way behind just about every major category on defense including 94th in scoring 128th in rushing 53rd in passing 120 20th in Total Defense but uh listen they they're just like everybody are trying to get better through the portal they've got a lot of positive momentum going um I think it's going to be fascinating to see you know if Haynes King can start off their quarterback start off this season like he finished last season I mean he had a 200 yard second half rushing performance against nor North Carolina late in the year uh you know he threw 16 interceptions fish to 27 touchdowns uh but he had an adjusted pass raate according to PFF of 69% which is you know I today's modern offens is where you're doing a lot of quick throws off the RPO game uh you know I think you I think quarterbacks need to be somewhere between 65 and 70% the elite quarterbacks I mean if if you watched him at Texas A&M I didn't think he could play division one football I he's improved a lot as a quarterback I it just he it didn't even look like he could play the position at A&M I mean he wasn't a very good passer he didn't know when to run he is just like this he was a good athlete uh but he's improved a lot they've sometimes you just need a coach that understands Hey listen these are your strengths we're going to play to your strengths we're not going to try to put you in our offense and make you feel uncomfortable uh he's not that round peg in a square hole type thing or whatever the saying is but it it's just he is in a better situation they take advantage of his ability to run they get him outside the pocket um you saw in even in the Miami game last year he got outside the pocket he was able to roll out and he he he made a play with his arm because of his ability to run yeah 737 yards on 12 120 carries and 10 touchdowns uh and uh listen uh you know the one thing you can't I mean it's hard to say it when you go 13 and0 and well 12 and0 in the regular season uh anyway last year for Florida State it's hard to uh say you really struggle with anybody right but if there's anyone there's any kind of quarterback that has given Florida State fits under Adam Fuller's defense has been athletic quarterbacks and this certainly is going to be one of those and if you go to the oola.com we put up our scouting report on Georgia Tech today and we've got a lot of PFF stats for you uh you know where he throws the ball to how many times this is all break down broken down from last year uh you know between behind or the line of scrimmage in the middle of the field outside the numbers and we break that down in from zero to 10 yards and then 10 to 20 yards and then 20 yards or more so it gives you a complete uh listing of every throw that he threw where it went and what his completion percentage was number of interceptions to that particular portion of the field number of touchdown passes and NFL pass rating and uh listen uh he's he was inconsistent I guess you can say with their interceptions uh you know 16's a lot it's more than one a game obviously uh and you really don't you really don't want to do that uh but uh he is uh definitely somebody that you know I know Brent key I listen to Brent talk uh coming into the season and he's high on him and uh so I think Florida State's going to have a little bit of challenge there they do return three of their five starting offensive linemen and brought in a transfer from Middle Tennessee uh they brought in three tight ends fish uh they're really expecting big things out of the kid uh that they brought in from the ivy league Jackson hows I believe is how you pronounce his name now they did lose one of their uh guy that was in a rotation that tied into an injury and that was reported this week so they won't be quite as uh quite as uh deep at tight end but I do think this is a team that is going to try to run the ball at Florida State they are were just you decidedly run oriented I think 477 runs last year as a team and I believe uh haes threw about attempted about 370 passes so 100 more running plays and passes plays over the course of a year that's about 10 per game uh so they are going to try I think they will try to attack Florida State on the ground and uh I think that's you know what we think of Florida State's Corners that's probably the way to do it and I think more I think the other thing they'll try to do fish uh and you can tell me your opinion here you know listen Florida State's front four is considered to be really good uh we had Kevin Carter on who is obviously a one of the best defensive ends in the NFL for the 14 years he played in the NFL and was very good at Hy Lincoln High School that's why we brought him on he's a former teammate of mine and then played uh defensive end at Florida obviously uh you know listen I think they're going to attack uh I think they're going to try to run the ball at the defensive ends and outside the H outside the tackles uh and try to and the reason for this a I want I think they want to test Patrick pyton and Marvin Jones Jr get the run but I also think they want to try to get uh darl Jackson and Josh farmer gassed by having to chase the ball what are you what are your thoughts on that well they listen they don't Jared verse was a big kid so you he could you you were able to set the edge with the defensive end on run plays with him Patrick's a little leaner and so is uh Marvin that you can run on them you'll I'm sure they'll double team one of them and and go after uh them in the Run game so you can attack Florida State a little different on the edge this year because verse isn't there and it's going to be interesting um the defense tackle they lost to the NFL the uh kid from Western Michigan I forgot his name but he was a big piece of their run stopping last year as well so it's going to be interesting to see how well they can stop the run uh they they have a team that I think is very good on defense but do they have the depth to hold up at the through a game especially early in the season you know it's going to be uh a different environment there it's going to be tough on that defense will fsu's offense uh have a lot of three and outs early this year so I do think their offense will struggle at times in this game um so it'll be interesting to see how this game the Dynamics go right hey fish can you hold one second while we go to break and we'll come right back and finish up no problem all right we'll be right back in about 70 seconds the backshore that stretch of fluffy sand just beyond the reach of the salty waves the count you follow this program closely and you have well before Mike got here in his staff but you know this is an offense that's replacing Jordan Travis Trey Benson Jem Bell Keon Wilson and Johnny Wilson Keon Coleman excuse me and Johnny Wilson uh what do you expect out of this offense with uh some new pieces you got Malik Benson coming in from Alabama Jaylen Lucas from Indiana DJ from Oregon State Ro Rodell Williams from uh Alabama then you got uh Ferguson the offensive lineman from Alabama Richie Leonard from Florida to go along with uh what was a pretty good offensive line coming back uh what what are your expectations for Florida State's offense what do you think they'll look like uh I have said that last year's offense was driven by the skill players uh the ones I just mentioned and I think this offense is going to be driven by the offensive line yeah I think the offensive line should be the strength you not only do you have a lot of experience you have it's a it's a offensive line that's been together as far as a lot of starts among them they know where each other should be at I think it's a very good offensive line and I think Mike's going to rely on that I think they're going to be heavy run um I think that getting the ball out of uh DJ's hand on quick short passes where he doesn't have to make uh a ton of reads he you know just get the ball into their Playmakers hands but he is going to take a chance down the field because I think DJ the one thing that DJ is very good at when I watch this film at Oregon state is pushing the ball outside the numbers those deep outs uh deep digs deep comeback routes uh and pushing the ball down the field I think you're going to see more shots on deep passes I think this is the type of offense all year you're going to see them have three playay drives score quit on a 4050 yard touchdown and then there's going to be inconsistency at times because DJ's inconsistency is a passer where they have drives where they're three and outs or four and outs so I think that you're going to have a mix of both I still think the offense is going to be very productive while at times it's going to be frustrating I think the fans are going to be up and down all year um just because of the lack of consistency they're going to have at the quarterback position now I think DJ is a very good Bridge quarterback I think he fits a lot of what norell wants to do but there's going to be days or drives and moments as a passer and I'm sure you've seen this in practice where he just is not on or he has a bad run of uh of passes like like with um Travis you always knew that there were certain passes they could go to that he was comfortable throwing to get him in a rhythm kind of like a uh free like a three-point shooter in basketball you can get them a layup you could get them a free throw all of a sudden they start shooting really well that's what you have to do with DJ you have to get them involved early in a game I think if he gets off to slow starts I think some games could get very frustrating for the Florida State fan base and the and the coaching staff because he is a guy that you've seen whether he was at Clemson whether he's at Oregon state that he could have moments where he goes five or six straight passes where they're incompletion so can they survive that I think a lot of that the way you get a help yourself is win first down win the Run game uh get the ball out of his hand quickly and then when you have a shot take some shots down the field try to end drives quickly yeah it's interesting because you hear different things from different people and it's funny how a group of people can see one practice or a group of practices different it really is uh you know I I've said uh earlier this week uh at the aol.com that I think this is a what I call Bridge Under Construction right uh I don't think they quite know who they are on on offense going into this year I do think they're going to rely on the Run uh I do think dju will get better as the season goes on and I think Mike as I said is a really good play caller and I think that he will find a way with DJ but it has not been uh what we have seen last year you know everybody says well the offense is struggling in Camp because uh the defense is that good well the defense was that good last year and the offense routinely competed with the defense uh uh listen I know that some people think that he ended Camp uh on with a on a great foot uh as did the the whole offense but uh I listen we we don't get to see the scrimmages uh you know that's that those are private they had three of them we get to see practices where they don't really play live football and I sometimes I think either positively or negatively we're hypercritical so uh I think this uh I think that uh I think you're right we've seen some of those frustrating moments in camps not only from dju but from all the quarterbacks really uh so I am looking forward to seeing if uh you know guys like Kevin Carter who came and he expects big things from dju throughout the season for Florida State uh he saw one practice and obviously we got some guys on our staff that uh felt like he ended camp on a really high note and uh hopefully they're right uh but uh it it is an offense that got better as the uh Camp went along uh and listen you got to have more consistency receiver I think as we've talked about and I think that that position group will grow in season but I agree with you I think it's going to be kind of a a work in progress and kind of feeling out what DJ can do in Mike's offense and you know I do think that the running G I think the running game has a chance to be really really strong I think people are going to be uh very impressed with how deep FSU is at running back uh you know how do you get all these guys to carry I heard Urban Meyer talking on a show today about Ohio State and how you spread the ball to all their running backs and keep everybody happy um you know you've got Roy Dell you've got uh Lawrence toili uh you've got Jaylen Lucas who's M uh making a name for himself in practice I think people are really going to like jayen Lucas is a weapon in Mike's offense he's going to be this year's douche vaugh I've said this before on the show go watch Kansas State play a couple years ago pull up de Von Clips he plays for the Cowboys now uh and uh but yeah it's going to be interesting on I think we're all ready uh you know Kevin and I were talking about it uh We've everybody's been doing a lot of talking and as I told him it's not so much talking as it is speculating right we're all speculating we think we see this we think we see that uh we debate this we debate that uh you know uh we read into this we read into that and you know we're we're going to have more to talk about when ever have now the the season started but speculation season is over and we are about 44 hours away from Florida State kicking it off against Georgia Tech just if you're not at the game and you want to know a little bit about the weather they're going to kick off at uh 5:00 pm Ireland Standard time I believe that's what they call it uh and uh it's going to be about 60 degrees at kickoff uh it was raining today when we talked to Jerry live from Dublin uh now the forecast calls for sunny skies in Ireland on Saturday low at 50 about 50 at the end of the game uh winds could play a factor Jerry said they were getting gust at 40 miles an hour obviously that's a issue in the kicking game now winds are sustained they supposed to be sustained at 10 to 15 miles per hour on Saturday at kick off with gust up to 30 uh obviously Florida state is a 10 and a half Point favorite uh this has been a very equal series uh FSU holds a 15 13- one advantage in the series against Georgia Tech so I think this is going to be interesting uh you got what we think the strength of Florida State's team is the defense going against the strength of what Georgia Tech team which we think is the offense and then you got the offense at Florida State which there are some questions going in against a defense that certainly has questions coming off his performance last year so I think it's going to be fascinating both teams have uh good uh really good punters and kickers uh I think you know that they kind of cancel each other that once you go look at the stats on those guys obviously I think Master Mano is the best punter in college football but the kid they got uh Shanahan who is actually from Ireland at Georgia Tech is uh he's pretty good too he averages almost 43 yards a kick and then their their field goal kicker Aiden bar Burr is was 17 of 19 last year and the only kicks he missed was from 47 and 49 yards so to be interesting to see how it plays out all right fish so I want to ask you this question uh I think I asked Kevin I think you've uh well I'm not going to ask you this question because you've written an article tomorrow help me write an article I sent you that yeah yeah yeah so we're gonna tomorrow afternoon or tomorrow morning we're going to unveil our over under Vegas Insider has Florida State's over under at nine and a half games uh the Oola staff uh uh has gone ahead and answered that question for me I put it out to five of the guys on staff and they've all answered one way or the other so you will have our answers on whether we think Florida state is going to be uh winning 10 games or more for the third time in three seasons uh tomorrow uh I want to ask you who do you have uh preseason going to the ACC Championship game because uh now for the ACC uh it's probably more important to win the championship than maybe any other conference besides the Big 12 because you know whoever is in the SEC and uh Big 10 championship game both those teams are going almost certainly and they're probably going to get a third team in out in from those conferences uh depending on listen there could be a lot of Carnage in the SEC fish and the Big 10 too I mean they they brought in top tier programs they didn't bring in a cow they didn't bring in a Stanford uh they brought in an Oregon and a USC and the UCLA and a Washington and Texas and Oklahoma uh so who do you what two teams do you think going to see uh are you going to give me the two big brands or you going to give me a surprise you know we discussed this the other day I I personally think the acc's wide open this year I'm not sold on Clemson I I just I thought that that program's been slipping for a while now um you know and it's not just because they haven't gone out their portal kids I think their top end Talent is a step down from what they've had and their teams aren't as deep and uh there's issues there um I think Florida State Miami will have a rematch in the in the finals the one team I I agree with you uh when we're talking I think that could sneak in there maybe it's Virginia Tech um I think those are the three teams I think Virginia Tech's a darkh horse in ACC like you said they have a quarterback uh coming back I think that that coach has done a really good job um they got better as the season went on last year I just think a lot of the other ACC teams uh you look at a North Carolina they just lost too much and I mean they couldn't win with two NFL quarterbacks what are they going to do without having two guys that are NFL quarterbacks on their roster I they I'm with you I'm with you if they didn't win with Drake May and and uh Sam how I just don't I don't even know who the quarterback is at North Carolina this year but oh it's m Johnson Brad Johnson's yeah I mean I saw enough of him at LSU and Texas A&M to realize you're not winning a conference with him and um you I just I think the conference this year some of these newer teams because they're kind of set up to do well in ACC like an SMU even a cal Cal's got a very good quarterback and a running back I think SMU could kind of be another team that kind of Beats beats some teams and wrecks people Seasons I the ACC I think there's going to be two teams maybe three that have really good seasons and the rest are going to be in that six seven eight wins I I mean you saw my breakdown of ACC I I just I think there's a lot of teams that are in interchangeable it's going to come down to who stays healthy I I think that that's the one thing through college football nobody talks about now these guys used to play only 10 or 11 games now they're playing 14 plus playoffs who's gonna be healthy at the end of the year this isn't pro football I don't think people realize that guys you start losing guys at key positions like Florida state did last year at quarterback all of a sudden your season could be wrecked so yeah it's going to be interesting to see what team how these coaches you you discussed it will you start to see teams in games that don't you know against lesser opponents are they gonna pull a quarterback for a game against a Charleston Southern and FSU or a bethon or a FAMU knowing that you could beat those guys with your backups and not risk that guy taking one more game one more hit uh in those games yeah and I'm not sure expanding the scholarship limit to 105 is the answer either because how do you practice 105 guy I mean I don't know it's it's not even that like how many of those guys really at that point you know when you have 85 usually the last 10 to 15 really probably can't play on a team what so you're adding 40 kids that can't play or 30 you really want to throw those guys out there I don't see it making like it may help a few teams but I don't think it's going to help most teams yeah listen the guy the team I want to see and just because they've been so good on defense the last couple years and quarterback's really been the Bugaboo for him uh NC State's got Grayson McCall coming up from Coastal Carolina so I've always wanted to see what that kid could do at the major college level yeah obviously he set the world on fire about two or three years ago with the Run they had under Jamie Chadwell before he left for Liberty uh I can't and I was always surprised they did not go to Liberty with Jamie but um I think it's going to be interesting Jamie's got a pretty good quarterback at Liberty that's half the problem is that the Salter kid I mean he's got a stud there I you bring them up you want to talk about a a coach that it's going to be interesting he's one everywhere he's gone I I I say he's I don't say he's the next Urban but this a guy that you look at his track record he's w at every program yeah all right so for all our Florida State fans Florida state in the ACC Championship Game fish or no I I until I mean they're the champions last year you got to Beat the Champ I think that they know how to win the games they're supposed to um I think they'll get in there it's it like I said it's I think this first game will tell you a lot like this they need to get by Georgia Tech I know a lot of fans are going to sit there and think this is an easy game not out the gate like they just need to I don't care if they win 20 to 17 it could be ugly just get out of there win be healthy and then recalibrate and go into a long season and just be happy you're one and0 you don't have to win this game like they did the LSU game last year listen this is this was not about style points this is about getting it done yeah yeah you can you get your style points to other places in the season but yeah listen fish I'm glad it's here man I'm glad you're here will join us and fish is going to join us every Tuesday at 3M we're going to do a reeling them in segment every Tuesday that he is available I think he's got a couple that he may not be able to join us for it doesn't seem like an AR we have arguments because as soon as soon as we're over we're right back to where we began so uh but yeah so I'm keeping Tuesdays open uh for uh we're keeping Tuesdays open during the season for guests uh and of course we will have uh First Impressions live after the Georgia Tech game uh kickoff is at noon eastern time here so we will game should be over 3:30 or four
