Mr Travis Rogers you can follow him on X Travis Rogers and on today's show we're breaking down the Rams 2024 draft for throwing out grades for their rounds three five and six picks we're going to break it all down here but first today's episode is brought to you by Monopoly go I admit it I have a competitive side and is a big fan of Monopoly go the mobile hit Twist on classic Monopoly so join your friends and download Monopoly go now free on the the app store or Google Play Love the Monopoly Go app okay so round three the 99th pick overall the ram select safety Cameron kins out of the University of Miami now first things first big shout out to reim Morris the ram they received this pick via the League's compensatory draft policy so they were able to get that extra pick and with Cameron kinchin you're getting a ball Hawk you're getting a player that's been one of the most productive players in all of college football the last couple Seasons only sea Taylor and Ed Reed had more interceptions in their college careers than kinchin so that's kind of the first thing about him if you look at the athleticism if you look at his R score it doesn't blow you away his 40 time but it's that he's a ball Hawk he's got great hands got nose for the football so you love guys like that yeah you know look if they could be if if Cameron kitchens could be half as good as either Ed Reid or Shawn Taylor then you got a great player because those guys are legends right those are some of the best guys to have played uh at that position this is an area of need this is something that uh the Rams hope to get yet a a performance that's slightly above the line I think when you've looked at the Rams safety play over the last couple years it's been slightly below the line not terrible not something that is absolutely sinking the team defensively but something that wasn't an area of strength we know that they made uh the trade for curl earlier you go out and you draft kinchin so obviously this is something that they're addressing and it just it's another layer to the thing that I've been saying over and over and over again this is Aaron Donald related Aaron Donald is gone you need to get better on every level of your defense you need to get better on the defensive line you need to get better at linebacker and you need to get better at your secondary and in particular in the safety positions and I think the kitchens gives them a chance to do that absolutely 100% and you talk about the Aaron Donald effect and the guys they want to put in this defense it was about okay if they have some flaws as for far as their measurables or 40 times or whatever it may be we want physical guys that have a history history of college success a history of being a competitive player that go out that goes out there and has an impact and he absolutely does have that I mean 5'11 203 pounds it's the versatility he can play deep safety he can play single high can play coverage he can be close to line of scrimmage you like that versatility also too if you just look at his role for the Rams Jordan Fuller he signed with the Carolina Panthers this off season John Johnson the third he's still a free agent so he's going to be competing with Russ yeast for time we'll see what Quint Lake does they had him in the slot but will he get some more time at the safety position so we know the Rams don't like paying big for safeties but they needed to add a safety and they get one that has a ton of upside and also one Travis that heading into the combine heading into the pro days there were people out there that have as a first rounder and at worst a second rounder so didn't measure great as far as the r and some of the physical tools but because of that they were getting some high value out of him yeah look he's a talent Ed guy to be sure and I like how you you started that dmac that this is somebody that's versatile let's go back to the Ram's very first pick in Jared verse and all the different spots that he could potentially line up at where he may be able to have uh some success as well Fisk kind of falls into a similar category but obviously the Rams were not looking for one person to do one thing you want somebody that can do a handful of different things if you can find somebody that can do a handful of different things at a level that's above the line even better but being able to slot him in at all those different spots that you're mentioning gives him an opportunity to be on the field gives him an opportunity to do the things that you're talking about which is namely take the ball away right make big plays this is something that I think that the Rams are emphasizing coming into this season something that they were not very good at last year and that is putting the offense back on the field quickly that this was a a defense that was you know they they they weren't just taking it away time and time again a killer Witherspoon was kind of the one guy that might make a play like that but outside of it it really wasn't there now you start to look around you look at some guys that have a history you know travius white is at the top of that list if he can stay healthy but you're gonna need some guys to turn over the other team and kinchin certainly has an opportunity to do that yeah I think he's one of those guys where he plays faster in games and and he plays faster on film than he does when he's being tested and you just have guys like that not comparing him to Ed Reed or saying he's gonna be Ed Reed but Ed Reed wasn't someone that blew you away with his measurables with his combine testing with his athleticism he was a ball Hawk he was a high IQ player that just had a knack for making big plays and we talked about this last season is this defense they were B but don't break they kept this team the game they gave them chances to win but they did not turn the ball over 11 interceptions for kins was the most in college football since 2022 he's the only player in the FBS with at least 10 interceptions in that span some guys you can't explain it just find a way to get their hands on the football and cause turnovers and he's certainly one of those guys yeah you know yeah there are just guys that have a nose for the ball there are guys that are around big plays over and over again I know we talked about Ed Reed a couple of different times uh look Ed Reed might be the greatest player at his position uh that we've seen over the last 25 or 30 years so I I think we need to be really careful about making comparisons like that but how how often was he just near the ball was he there to make that big play and I think that's kind of the the skill set that we're talking about just not necessarily a guy that's going to win the underwear Olympics not necessarily a guy that is going to measure out on all of these other things exactly the way that you wanted to but does he have the ball in his hands a lot when you need him to does he make big plays when you needed to and the answer at Miami was yes now you know the NFL in Miami are are very very different but I like where we're starting from I I I I like the pick I I think this is just another one of those picks that you look at with the Rams is there isn't a oh my gosh what are they doing it makes a lot of sense it FS a need is a highly graded player and I'm I'm enthusiastic to see what he can bring to the team especially if he can translate that skill of taking the ball away from the other team that's the biggest thing because yes the 40 time isn't great and that's kind of the one thing you can't teach right you can't teach the 40 time and you can't teach speed and in a game of inches in the NFL it's only a faster game than the college game so a game inches yes that could be something that could hinder his ability to make those plays that we talk about and yes sometimes he takes poor angles and coverage and there are some knocks on them but there is no perfect Prospect you're going to have pros and cons for all these guys I think the pros outweigh the Cons with kinchin I think they got a dog man I really am very very high on this pick I love guys from the U we know that era I want the U to be good again you know I me I want the U to be good again you know I mean so look I I like the pick I definitely give this a B+ a B+ pick there where they select them shout out to rahee Morris giving a little paring gift for Los Angeles Rams but we're going to break down more of these picks we're talking 2024 NFL draft for throwing out grades that's coming up next here lock on Rams all right game off we gotta pause here to talk more about Monopoly go that's right I know you're saying flag on the play you already talked about that but there's just way too much good stuff in this game got to fill you in on Monopoly go you can team up with your friends for time tournaments where you work together to build up each other's boards the Monopoly goes so get off the bench and go download it right now for free on Google app or the Play Store game on and welcome back to lockon Rams thank you for making lock on Rams your first list in Monday through Friday in the morning so be sure to check for that and also membership is 100% free and you won't miss a thing about your Los Angeles Rams also I wanted to read a comment from an everyday listener this is from Joshua Martin go over on YouTube he says in regard to overpaying for Fisk some seem to have forgotten less than Sean's philosophy of f them pick so he's say the FM picks era is kind of back and one thing I want to point out before we headed into our second segment about another pick here here is Seth Walder he tweet out the Rams trade up for Braden Fisk was the most expensive day to overpay of at least the last six drafts according to esp's draft pick valuations Rams traded 52 155 and 2025 second to Carolina for 39 so it did come at a high price yeah look if they if it works it's a steal at twice the price right it all of this stuff matters is if he's a good player or not if it's not a guy that impacts the game the way that the Rams and Les sne and sea McVey and all of us are hoping that it does then it is one of those they did what they paid how much for it if it's somebody that comes in and all of a sudden anchors your defense for the foreseeable future than it was a steal that nobody knows you you this this drives me crazy dmac because I get it I understand that we're all trying to decide until you see the Man play in the NFL it's a guess at best you don't know if he's bad it's a bad pick it's a bad trade it's too expensive if he's good it's the steal of the second day of the draft this is what I'm talking about we gotta see these guys on the field did anybody know that puka nakua was going to be an all pro wide receiver in the sixth round was this the greatest steal in the history of the sixth round last year we or fifth round I should say we just don't know until you see these guys on the field 100% I see people out there that were kind of being critical of this just because of where he was selected saying did you trade up too high well guess what you could have well we don't know it's gonna take time only time will tell but here's the truth though if you were Adam in if you were determined to get a defensive tackle if you look at the way that second round played out three of the first six picks were defensive tackles you had roro you had newon you had sweat there so and sweat was taking at 38 so they were falling off the board very very quickly there and if you didn't take action if you didn't make a move it wasn't going to happen for you so I have no problem with the aggression because at the end of the day you have to think of your team and your roster build as what needs are we trying to fill you can't think of the other teams out there you can't think about future draft Capital especially if you like a player as much as they did so no issue with it yes you could even call it overpay but look it was a a risk that you had to take if you're the Rams especially with Aaron Donald retiring yeah and look I I get that this is not fun I get that this is not the thing that people are looking to do a handful after the draes to hear yeah you're going to have to wait a year or two to find out what this is good you're gonna have to wait a year or two to find out if this is good look at what lesne and Shawn McVey have done in the draft not just this year or last year or the year before look at it in its totality more of it has been good than has been bad nobody bats a thousand nobody misses them all you're hoping to hand to hit on more than you miss they have but you got to let it play out until there is there are so few picks that they say it's like oh that's perfect like they they're just aren't a lot of guys that you take even if you're picking in the top two or three you don't know six quarterbacks in the top 12 picks the odds are four of those guys are going to be bums right you you have no idea what you're actually doing until you put him on the field you do your homework you hope it works out but until you see him play who know knows they're all lottery tickets there's no exact science of it and two if they didn't get some Equity from you after what they did in the 2023 draft then they never will okay they deserve the benefit of the doubt yes I'm not going to list off all the bad picks in recent Years everybody has bad picks every has bad picks 100% yeah yeah it's a part of the game but let's talk about real quick Brennan Jackson round five the 154th pick overall another Edge rusher they picked up out of Washington States from Southern California and we know that this fits with the goal for the 2024 draft rebuild restock retool this Rams defense and I like Jackson High character guy eight and a half sacks last season he had finished his career at Washington state with 20 sacks he had 14 and a half sacks over the last two years so very very productive and I think when you look at where this Rams defense is you got Jared verse you got Byron young Michael Hoy Nick hton oshaan mattisse you got guys there that can fill spots but Hoy they brought him back is he a future depth piece as far as Hoy could you also move back into the interior line because you have more Edge rushers I'm hoping that's the big takeway of all this is he's a depth piece and possibly you put Hoy in a better position to optimize his skill set it allows you to try more things it it it allows you to have more options to solve whatever potential issues may come up whether it's injuries whether it's performance whether it's playing somebody Maybe uh outside of their ideal position I think you and I uh both kind of think that way with Michael hoit and allowing them to go back to more of their natural spot it allows you to fill holes it allows you to try something different with a different guy in a different spot that you know once you get past the the third round or so a lot of this is let's see how it works out that's what this feels like look maybe it's a home run maybe it's a guy that we never even say his name ever again you know you just you're not quite sure this is but I do like that they went heavy defense I do like that their guys are the number of their picks are guys that at least potentially could get to the quarterback that's something that's going to have to be replaced with Aaron Donald I know it's such a weird deal because Aaron Donald was an interior defensive lineman for the most part and yet we're continually talking about finding ways to get to the quarterback to put pressure on the quarterback to give your uh uh defensive backs less time to have to cover all of these things but all of these things come back to Aaron Donald and finding ways to put pressure on the opposing quarterback that's what it's all about and you look at Jackson he's someone that could certainly provide quality depth in the future remember Hoy is only on a one-year deal he could be gone next season but I do want look get hoy's hands in the grass okay give me three Tech give me FTE I'm just I don't want to see that again but yeah I think this made a lot of sense if you look at the Rams roster too had 53 man roster he had five edges on it one point he had six at one point so they have shown they do like depth at that position so you get another guy you can bring him kind of feels like he fits Ram's culture the personality where he's from so definitely like that but coming up next the kicker spot has been addressed I'm very high very bullish on this kicker smart guy out of Stanford we're going to talk about him next un locked on Rams it is playoff time in the NBA and NHL well it's not playoff time anymore for the Lakers but there are other NBA teams that are continu to play in the playoffs there are still hockey playoffs baseball is in full swing and FanDuel is your place to bet on each and every game and right now new customers get $150 in bonus bets that is guaranteed that's 150 bucks win or lose you can bet on everything from automatic win FanDuel America's number one sports boat and we're off running here on lockon Rams thank you for making lockon Rams your first list in every single weekday free available whever get your podcast lock on Rams part of locked on podcast Network your team every day all right Travis here on the third SE we're talking about special teams we're talking about a position that caused so many Rams Fans so much stress last season and of course the kicker spot well with a 33rd pick of the sixth round the 213th pick overall the Rams selected Joshua cardi kicker out of Stanford first thing I want to say is they didn't just get a kicker they didn't just draft any kicker he was widely in University considered to be the top kicker in this draft so clearly this is a point of emphasis clearly the Rams prioritize adding a quality kicker they can not be a kicker not just for this season but for the future I love this pick look it's such a important spot and it's going to be even I think more important moving forward we we'll see what the new kickoff rules in the NFL look like but it feels like you're going to have to be able to kind of drop that ball in a very specific spot so we'll see whether or not that Josh cardi is able to do that but more so than just trying to set yourself up defensively to be in a good spot uh with the kickoff after you score can you make the most basic field goals that are being offered to you and what I'm talking about are those kicks between 35 and 50 yards those have to go in those have to go in and they have to be something that's a no-brainer for Shawn McVey to call that I think is the biggest problem that they ran into last year it's not just that they were missing a whole bunch of kicks but rather what did that do for Shawn mcvey's decision-making process in play calling prior to getting to Fourth Down is it a different call on second down is it a different call on third down because you're worried about you know whether it's uh Brett Maher or Lucas havick or whoever else it is that they were going to run out there and not knowing if you are going to have those three points in your back pocket the Rams best version of themselves over the the the Sha McVey era have been when Greg zerline was kicking for him at the beginning and and zerline had huge leg but he also made the ones you were supposed to make and Matt gay Matt gay might didn't have the as big of a leg as zerline but he was automatic on the ones that you need to make I don't need Josh cardi to be the second coming at Justin Tucker and be bombing him from 60 plus yards make your kicks between 35 and 50 yards and everything else is gravy after that he's got a big leg I mean 24 for 27 on 40 plus yard field goal since 2022 and 88.9% right there so that's definitely a high clip for that but for me like you said look say what you want about kickers yes it's not fun yes no one rocks kicker jerseys they don't put butts in the seeds but there's two or three games every single season that come down to a kicker making kick remember last season the Steelers game okay Maher missed those three kicks the the Rams lose 24 to 17 I mean that's a critical game at home and you need guys to go out there like you said it's like in baseball just make the routine play okay I'm not asking to win a gold glove not ask a platinum glove not make you diving stop make the routine play and then yeah you want to give me an occasional 55 plus yard field goal I love it it's great it's a luxury but you need guys that can just be consistent and make the kicks that you're supposed to make look if you told me right now he's not going to make a single kick outside of 50 yards but he's going to make all the kicks inside of 50 yards let's go I could I I can work with that like you said it'd be nice to have you know he does have some leg Beyond 50 yards wonderful make the ones you're supposed to make and I guess what's nice about this or or or at least you know I I don't even know the right word they're easy to evaluate it either goes in or it doesn't you this is not a well you know we're getting a little close no it goes in or it doesn't or we go get a new guy it's a brutal position it is a ruthlessly brutal position where if you just miss a couple your job is hanging by a red but it's also arguably the most important position on the field that never plays because they might be out there for four or five plays a game and they can determine like you said dmac a game or two a seating or two an advancement in a playoffs or not I you know let's go back to that Detroit game their inability to try to kick a field goal late there to try to get half that yardage back instead they try to take a big swing on third down they don't get it done they decide to pun it away that was all related to their their inability to make field goals and hopefully it's been addressed hopefully it's been addressed you only have Tanner Brown kicker out of Oklahoma State who was undrafted on the roster he absolutely needed that he had a 97 career grad in 2021 that was first among all college football kickers by the way whose job is it to Great kickers that's a definitely fighting the good fight right there so I will say this and the show on this the Jake bites remember we're talking about Jake Bates from the Michigan Panthers of the U I mean the Jake Bates dream might be dead at this point so keep them draft cardi great let's see what it looks like if it goes in it's a cardi party if it doesn't we're going to go find somebody else cardi party it is but that's going to do it for this episode of lockon rams my name is Doug McCain you can follow me on X and Instagram dmac corla and you can follow the people's CH Mr Travis Rogers Travis Rogers
