Week 2 Recap: Missouri's 38-0 Win Over Buffalo

[Music] [Music] and welcome back to another episode of the woods water missou podcast 2 and 0 here Missouri Tigers I'm on your regular Cod sker Lo me tonight as usual is case and Cole fellas how y'all overall what would you give the overall team performance uh let's break it up first first offensively what grade do you give the offense for the game Cole grading B minus minus as well at same yeah B minus because I know what these players are capable of and I'm sure it's frustrating to both coach dritz and Kirby Moore but we haven't we haven't seen it yet we have not seen this team's full potential and call it call it what you want call it sand bagen call it holding back to Playbook whatever they're winning these games handily and maybe maybe they're doing that with just barely revealing I don't I don't know if that's necessarily the case like it was last year but B minus would be would be my grade for the offense on uh on Buffalo I think I think they've got a lot room to improve but it wasn't you know world ending be minus for me because I feel like outside of the penalties they played like a a solid a game uh they just got stalled out consoling because B minus almost feel disrespectful theis because the whis was you know just out there balling but he had lot dver he should he could have got more he could have scored a touchdown had more opportunities to had we not had holding after holding after legal formation after yada yada yada yada kill all these drives um and like I think I said to you guys in pre-show that game could have been 77 to zero it just every time we got down there we would make a crucial mistake and mess it up so I say B minus but it's an a it's just all those penalties knock it down to there yeah and and like you said it's absolutely no disrespect to the because he absolutely balled out we're going to talk a little bit more about that later but had he not what he done I would probably have us like C+C again because I know we all know what this team's capable of of of the level that they're capable of executing at and we haven't seen it yet we haven't seen the Rhythm we haven't seen the Deep ball like we saw last year you know offensive line there were you know a couple new pieces floating around on there we've seen some decent running back play Brad norley was out yesterday so you know I I don't I don't think B minus is overly harsh and if it comes off that way sorry but that's just kind of my personal opinion I and I would hope that the players would kind of grade themselves the same way I know they're having fun I know they're they're playing with their brothers but are they playing the perfect game and playing at the level that they know they're capable of playing I would I would think not yeah uh I would say B overall uh I feel the Run game was very effective again uh Brady with his legs was very effective the play calling I felt was left the biggest room for improvement for me in that game gave me a lot of memories of week two last year against Middle Tennessee State to where what is this offense you know and is this the offense we're going to see later in the year and I don't think it is I think they did hold back a little bit as we uh we did this backwards we just wrapped up our preview of Boston College but is because we had somebody from Boston on and so uh we wanted to get them to where they weren't up till midnight on on the East Coast talking to us but uh as I said on that episode I felt it was a lot of short intermediate passes uh and routes that we were running and I don't if that's what Brady was seeing or if that what was what the play calls were but uh I feel we've got too much size and talent and speed to be running those type of routes you know uh no offense but we don't have tox tosy Dove as our number one receiver out there anymore you know uh we've got guys that can can run 10 and outs and and whe routes and uh run over the middle and run post routes and so you know the talent that and the abilities that's on that side of the passing game and the passing game is honestly what what left us uh all in in the B range there I think running the ball I don't know that any of us really have any complaints there aside from the holding penalties uh now drinkwitz in his postgame presser he seemed to take that more as an issue with the rest because Buffalo had two penalties we had 10 penalties uh and the two that were called on them I remember one was a passenger parents I think they were both passenger parents that they had to be called that I mean you had to call them so uh no holding penalties on them and you you call all that on us and so I think Eli had a little bit of issue with the refs and as I as I said the case to me when they showed the replays of the penalties it wasn't guys getting beat and that was the last resort to to stop a sack or a tackle for loss it was hand placement you know they had the guys block it was just getting their hands too far on the outside so that's coachable things fixable things I'm not too worried about that defensively case do you have something you want to say about the offense quick can I can I put tin full hat on real quick yeah go ahead that's why drink was going so hard at the end the game hit the over that the refs trying to point shave he's like the refu stalling out my offense they want to keep the under because they have the under maxed out that's why drink we had Pine going like balls to the wall then the fourth with a minute left and they get one more he's like we're GNA call six straight passes with pine man we're getting down there we're g to score these dead gun points hey you know uh John that we had on from the bullseye Nation me was messaging me during the game and he wasn't too happy about us going for that touchdown I look at it this way Brady's One play away from being knocked out of a game and you have to have drew Pine as your every down quarterback your starter and so you've got to get these reps somehow uh and and getting game reps is completely different from giving him reps with number one in practice you know throughout the week so I have no problem with it it wasn't it wasn't disrespectful to me the way that they went about it and if Buffalo has a real problem with it stop them yeah you uh you kind of took the words out of my mouth because well in this day and age in the college football playoff ERA with 12 teams or I guess 11 minus the group of five they're going to be looking at everything and every reason to either a put someone in or be keep them out of the conversation did you score 31 or did you score 38 against Buffalo did you you know what I mean it's going to come down to those little ticky tacky things and you got to score the points when you can you I mean you paid the team to come here and play you agreed to play like you said stop them if you don't like it stop them plain and simple yeah I think if Buffalo wanted to wave the white flag and just get the game over with then they should change their offense on their last possessions but they were still going for it even on fourth down you know and so uh they're trying to put points up and and you know get off get the egg off the scoreboard for them so to me you have every right to counter that when you have the ball to to still push it now we had our backup quarterback we had some backup lineman in there so you know it wasn't like we left Brady and was still running balls to the wall offense but we were we got to get the guys reps and uh it's very important to keep your backup quarterback engaged uh in games and keeping them fresh and getting getting game tape that you can coach throughout the week and show them hey you made this read probably we want you to do this read you know so I'm all for it I I don't feel as disrespectful in any kind of way uh defensively I think a minus for me uh they're in the a for the shutout they're not a or A+ because they gave up 114 rushing yards to a Mac team and uh you know some of it was Dal cardnell on the one run that they busted long on the outside he did not contain that the edge there and allowed him around and then he had to chase and so uh we saw once again some space between the tackles to run and I won't lie and say it's not something that concerns me when you have a team like Boston College coming in that running game is their bread and butter they run over 45 yards or 45 attempts per game in their first two games so uh it's something we're definitely gonna know what we have coming out of the game Saturday with run defense but I said a minus overall for the defense it was good but not great give give me a give me a solid a on them you get a you get a minimum of a if you shut someone out you know so I think that's fair uh I'm not gonna lie I I saw what you saw uh I thought there you know there were gaps I but I saw both I saw drives where we filled every R Lane possible and they had nowhere to go um then that's they broke a few they had some good drivers they got the 114 yards I saw Pride try and go for that pick six again jump the route the guy wide open had that was the biggest play FL had all night um so did I get name wrong was it wrong different player no it was Pride okay uh so I mean I agree with what you said uh there's room for improvement but I gotta get the boys an a for shutting them out and really only one threat when they had that long field goal I'm going to go back and defend my B minus one more time and then I'm going to move on to defense the other thing that could have improved the score in my mind and I know Brady's kicking himself but that interception was bad I I know bra probably the second that that ball left Brady's hand he's like why did they do that because it was just on the run you know yes you're not throwing across your body you're throwing with your body but soon as go I mean it was right right to him um that's just one you you wish you had back as you're on the run you don't see the guy sitting there and and offensive line had a breakdown on that they got beat on a stunt so that's what flushed Brady out to make him throw on the Run yeah uh but moving on to defense I'm if there was a way to no case I'm actually going to agree with you you get an A you shut somebody out you know whatever 114 probably less than 180 yards total I would bet um I know Agana didn't have a ton of yards through the air but as far as overall defensive performance got a turnover that was one of the things that I wanted to see you know I saw I saw defense kind of put some pressure on but yet contain a a running a quarterback with running Tendencies so overall grade for me would be uh would be an a hey if their quarterback was even halfway accurate there are some routes that he missed guys that were open uh yeah so you know I don't know that was necessarily defensive front putting pressure on him that made him rush those throws uh it seemed like there were throws that he just completely missed on his own uh but they had some guys open and so uh I you look at the overall yes a shut out that's that's great but we know we Eli's favorite podcast we know he plays us at practice so we know they're listening and I want to give them some bulletin board I want to piss them off I want them to work a little bit harder and come out and just you know play with their hair on fire against Boston College so a minus you know you did good but not good enough for the gold star sticker on your paper that's fair that's fair motivation material there no it's we could be ticky tacky and knit pick this thing to death but at the end of the day we we did what we needed to do we got out with a 38 nothing win aside from maybe the one interception that uh that Brady threw couple penalties pretty pretty perfect game so I think that we uh I think we're probably just looking for something to complain about I don't know maybe our our minds on the game so uh I do want to we've been hyping uh friend of the show Ernie Craig son Blake Craig uh off season after last week you know going three for three and six for six on extra points and he has he goes one for three yesterday uh makes a 51 misses a 52 and a 49 uh I think you know late game situations every coach from now on is going to be taking a timeout the two misses I believe both had timeouts called right before him so you know maybe making him pause and think the coach is going to be maybe see that as as a sign of a way to get to him but don't jump off [ __ ] with Blake Craig yet I'm asking the zoo fans I still believe in the kid uh he he's got the leg it was just accuracy that he missed those kicks they weren't short you know the the 51 yard that he made would have been good for over 60 had had plenty of leg on it so uh there's Growing Pains you know this is first year kicking at this level so uh bear with him don't don't go out there and add him on Twitter or say a bunch of things about him because there's going to be moments we need him and there's going to be times you're going to be praising him and being thankful he's a missou tiger because uh I I still have faith in him he he's still went out there after that didn't miss an extra point and I don't know that that is that easy to do after you miss those two field goals to go back out in the second half and make all those extra points I think that's something I would I'll would be struggling with self-confidence in that moment probably overcorrect or or o try too hard at times so uh it's probably the biggest negative of yesterday yesterday's game for a lot of missou fans were was the two Miss kicks but just just buckle up because it's it's a train ride you want to be on with Blake Craig I believe yeah I mean I think Cole I think you mentioned this when we're texting after with the game man meas had a pretty rough game versus midd Tennessee last year which would be this game last year and then he the next game he went on and he kicked that game that SEC record game winner uh I think I made the joke is do we need to start trotting Craig out there last year when uh when meas had missed I think he missed a fi go and an extra point in this game last year whatever was it was not a star set of performance missed the field goal State earlier in the game last year you're right yeah yeah we C that M was clutch but M would miss some just random field goals here and there well now one time Auburn he was in clutch um I do want to give a shout out to to Craig though so like I said I pretty live in the same area as him I brought my neighbor to one of his first missou games and uh I explained that to him and so my neighbor as like my my he's guy now he just hyped that there's a player from like like the same part of town we are so he was just going over the top every time Craig out there for like a kickoff a p anything he was just like ah C let's go that was funny that was funny to me yeah uh Co goad you got loaded yeah just one real quick thing on on Blake craigman has anyone ever tried kicking a field goal you not difficult that is dude like yeah they say hitting a a 95 mph fast ball is one of the hardest to do in Sports no doubt but dude kicking a football like yeah you can say oh well they're just kicker that's that's the that's their job go try it take a football go out on your local high school football field and try to kick a 35 yard field goal it's very difficult now try it in front of 62,000 National TV cameras and 22 guys on the field and you're the one that everybody's watching yeah exactly so I'm not saying that you know there needs to be and we're not going to harp on this for too much longer but you know meas was not the meas uh to close out the K State game that we all know we know the Auburn one is Infamous right um but there's what Boston College right like he was he was making kicks against Boston College in 2021 overtime didn't he it's there's a lot of waves with kickers right so you just got to ride them out man uh that's the one that the coaching staff has has dubbed the starter I'm sure Blake Craigs Canon get back in the lab and and Ernie's gonna be right there supporting him so it's all good we we're gonna be F drink what's put that more on the offense for uh not getting more yards you know that that one before the 49 y maybe in the 52 y but it was one right before the end of the first half and uh Brady gets a little bit of pressure and throws a terrible pass to Nate Noel and then Noel like that's one Brady should have threw over him or Noel should have dropped we end up losing seven yards on the play and then you know it was just kind of kind of terrible terrible terrible play right there from the offense that cost us some yardage and made that fi goal more difficult than what it should have been uh overall uh offensively another thing we had what two or three combination of illegal formation or an eligible receiver downfield because somebody was covered up on the line uh on one of them I know y'all couldn't see this because you were at the game or you probably didn't catch it unless you were watching drink specifically between plays but the one where they called Miller in eligible downfield drink what had the tablet and he's looking at the picture and he's going to the ref showing like how's he covered you know so he he really had an issue with the refs uh that's something I don't know if it was as self-inflicted as what the refs made it or if they were just being very particular on missou last night and as K said well that's another father that's another fatherson uh listener there because if you remember one of our very first ever our very first guest yeah our very first guest ever was Mr maer so shout out to him and we know all these Football dad are very passionate about their sons and I mean we know makai's preparation you know I mean we know what he does I I wouldn't think that he would make a a simple mental mistake like that maybe maybe he would but I mean like he said Co drink was just shown it to the Reps right there that that's that's not the case so again we could be ticky tacky and be on him it' be on the receiver on the outside of him uh covering him up right it be line it on on the outside receiver on that but but that's where you this is these are the kind of games where you get these things fixed so you you get these things tuned up so when you going to Boston College these these things aren't happening as I told y all forz lackluster as we felt during the game you look back and it's 380 uh you look across college football you know Alabama that was a three-point game with like less than 10 minutes to go in the fourth quarter against South Florida uh OU was a two-point game they were gifted a safety against Houston they should have lost that that was quter uh Notre Dame loses to Northern Illinois uh Oregon barely hangs on and beats Boise State we win 38 nothing we look back a year ago week two one possession game against Middle Tennessee uh so this is something we have to keep in perspective look around at the other team around us Penn State Conor basac you know for three and a half quarters is beaten them and then the Connor we all remember shows up and throws two interceptions and allows Penn State to come back and win the game so uh you know it's when when you look big picture you're feeling pretty good about yourself sitting two and 0 two shutouts and a 38 nothing win yep we got CL on something you know six eight yard digs come back to the ball catch it turn get up field get you know 15 yard uh reception out of out of play after play after play and ended up breaking tackles yep breaking tackles yards after catch and yards after contact for kind of through the roof so it it did get to the point in case and I know you were there as well it got to the point I was like holy cow man Theo whis there's Theo whis again catching another ball on first down Theo whis um so yeah man shout out to him that's uh one heck of a game I think he got up there with a a missou record as far as you know receptions for H for missou players so 13 receptions 149 yards and I don't know if yall know this from being at the game he was battling through a shoulder arm injury uh pretty well all the second half uh dude went out there and showed what being a leader is uh that was a game well being a captain is yeah you know that he very easily could have said coach I'm G sit out this and be ready for Boston College next week but he knew we were we were down Luther with the illness and he absolutely stepped up and played through the pain and led that offense so theis Jr the golden nutrition case I do have to ask you how was the blood pressure uh you have a false start number 55 called in the first half there you know what I was I was not as mad as I had been I guess this the first one in a while the Stak seemed pretty low I did scoff a little bit but the BL blood pressure stayed pretty low we stayed in the healthy range no I know I thought about that I was like oh there's one but uh I can't give the guy too much crap he's looked pretty good and there was a lot of mistakes on the offensive line py wise so I can't single him out he wasn't who I was most mad at the one last last week this game uh standout players for me obviously Theo uh defensively Joe Moore III he lived in that back field last night when he was on the field really good game his best game as a tiger I feel like uh Marvin Burks Jr once again so glad we flipped him from Old Miss because he's a true sophomore and that kid's making some hellacious plays out there on defense so really excited to see what number one's doing I mean really I got to remind myself that's not JC back there is number one you know because you think he he's making some senior plays but he's a true s yeah I'm with that I think he played a huge game back there defense can I say Johnny Walker he only had one sack but the one he did it it looked like he just was a next level of that tackle just bent right around him and straight to the quarterback so I really like that man Zion young has been uh really solid this season you know he's had couple sacks but his name is consequent misstion tackles I'm super impressed with him one thing I'm worried about was Zion young hang on Cole real quick if I can throw this in there I don't know if it's a camera angles or what if anybody else was at home watching or if yall go back and watch the broadcast look at where he was lining up I don't know how he was not called for being in the neutral zone several times and that's something that worries me because it looked like he was a half yard closer to the ball than any other uh dman uh pre- snap so I hope it was just bad camera angles that SEC network plus gave us but that was was something I was like hope we don't have a a d Ford moment later in the year with Z young right good gravy now they they've been playing great another one that's been playing phenomenal Cory flag leading the team in tackles again for the second straight game um one I guess on a little more serious note and then we'll get back to it but um Eddie Kelly the the passing of his mother unexpectedly last week was I'm sure something that not only rocked his world but um you know changed his life forever but also you know the team uh they talk about the Wilderness Brotherhood all the time and I don't I don't think there's a better unit than that defense than deathro defense to kind of rally around a guy like that bring him up I mean he obviously didn't have to play in that game but he chose to and I guess the defense uh had contributed and and made sure that that game was going to be you know for Eddie and uh and his late mother so obviously thoughts and prayers go out to that family we don't we don't know them um but they're they're missou players for their missou family and uh you know want to send send condolences out to them whole defense as a whole man just absolutely lights out you know they they played great flying all over they are a fast fast unit actually told I'm going to kind of use this I guess as a transition or segue or whatever but last night when I was at the airport and we're getting Buffalo loaded up and getting ready to get him out was talking to one of the Buffalo staff he said that the the difference in athleticism and the difference in the level of athletes that you know Buffalo has and missou has he even said he's like there were a couple times when we knew what play was coming you know we knew it's a Jet Sweep or it's a motion you know toss back counter whatever and they're just too fast they they could not keep up with the level of athletes that that we have so definitely encouraging to see you know you want size but speed speed kills in the SEC yeah that I do want to go back to the Eddie Kelly Jr uh that was something that broke me down in tears when I heard it uh I know you guys know this I don't know how many of our listeners know this you know I lost my mom unexpectedly she was 46 years old in 2013 and she passed away in her sleep so I could not imagine going out and focusing on a game uh the week after that uh it took me back to 2013 right there when when I heard that and uh then I I see the picture today of him in the pregame on his knees and on his towel he's got you know written about his mom and he's kind of looking up and it looked like there might have been tears in his eyes and that just touched me I don't know a lot about the young man with him being a transfer coming in but for him to want to be with the team want to contribute he he made some plays too uh you know he wasn't just there on the sideline he he was playing I I take my hat and and tip it to him and you know uh my heart goes out to him I know I know what that phone call is like and I know that pain of of losing your mom like that so uh and that's something that that personally touched my heart and to see the team right rally around him and give him the game ball and the defense say they dedicated that that effort of play to him and his mom that's something special that's another level of Brotherhood that goes deeper than even what last year's team had I don't remember any I know last year's team was very tight but I don't remember any stories that came close to that coming out of the last year as far as players going through those those types situations uh you know and that's that's the second player dealing with a a parent death uh I believe Luke bow his dad passed away from cancer before seasoned uh the the punter and so you know these guys have truly to see them you know coming out of the the locker room locked in arms and being a family uh man I love it I love it I love it I love it and uh just makes me you know you think last year's team was so special it's like having another kid how do I love I'm I GNA love this next kid as much because I I love this kid with all my heart and you know how do I love this next year's team as much as I love last year's because they were so special but you you find your ways of uniqueness about each one and uh very very happy to hear the stories coming out of the team rallying around players uh in in time of need like that so uh kudos to drink staff and the team for stepping up for that that young man in that moment so anything else on the game you know it's Buffalo it's a MC game uh we we have a great preview episode coming out later this week we have uh Brett Ryder from Eagles daily he's a publisher there but also has a podcast Eagles weekly and he was a great guest gave us some really good insight to great story to tell here in just a second about R daddy minerals but I've been teasing and messing with y'all about me having a bow season before y'all and it was this weekend uh Saturday Sunday Monday bow only Buck only uh they Arkansas put it in trying to get uh allow Hunters to get a buck and velvet and I had been working myself up for it and then the closer it got and the more the forecast stayed warmer and warmer and me thinking of walking through the national forest with two to three inches of leaves on the ground and my foot still being messed up and not being able to put it in a boot and thinking of Timber Rattlers and copperheads being out and having no desire to go back to the hospital because I'm wearing tennis shoes and I get bit on the ankle by a poisonous snake so my outdoors I burn brush yesterday we had Storm come through and I had cut up some trees that were down and so I did not go sitting a tree it was still 80 something degrees the ticks would be bad mosquitoes are bad right now snakes are out uh the recovery time in 80° weather is very short window compared to even a 60° weather day so uh I thought the cons outweigh the pros of going plus even once bow season kicks in I go from the end of September to the end of February I get to bow hunt for five months out of the year so I I thought just push it back right now it's not not that big of a deal that makes a lot of sense man and you're right the recovery time you don't you don't realize just how fast you got to get that deer open and get ice we always said my my families get ice bag of ice put in there man go to the store get a bag of ice put that in there get the cavern cavity cooled off yeah that's that's a lot I get it that's what these early season bow hunts are uh I mean it's fun to get out but like a lot of goes into the factor a lot of ticks a lot of bugs a lot of thickets and Y recovery is lightning fast yeah you guys are kind of on the same boat as me I'm as much as I mentioned that I mean I just talked to one of the farmers that lets me hunt today and he's like hey and need you to you know take more Do's this year I'm like oh trust me that's that's in the plans um but no I'm I'm also not going to burn myself out in the you know not as desirable part of the season I guess I'll put it that way I'm not GNA say the bad part because I don't know if there is a bad part but this this early season you know you can have a lot of fun um you can have a lot of success and you know one of the one of the things that we're fortunate enough to do as Outdoors men and women is you know take the the Next Generation and Mentor the Next Generation as far as hunting and one of our sponsors Dalton wood um owner of Rack Daddy minerals loaded him and his six-year-old son up um and headed west to the Forbidden forbidden border to our West and cross the state lines and uh purchased an out ofate tag for his son and lo and behold they went out there and they punched that those guys you know getting it done and punching a tag so really really happy for him that's too cool do y'all find it as humorous as I do that nine times out of 10 when you see a kid go hunting and they get a deer they're either dropping it right there in its tracks or it don't make it 20 yards and it's down and then you have somebody like me that's been hunting for over 20 years and I've got a track for 50 yards in the woods yeah what is it's like beginner's luck or something but I I totally agree it's yeah these kids always knock him down dead and then my I'm out there trying to find it after a while so I I agree with you it's all the fundamentals man it all boils down to the fundamentals and yeah rker rker smoked him in he's it's a it's a cool video you guys you need go check it out I've granted all my D field have been with a bow or crossbow so I'm not not aiming for the backbone trying to spine on drop them uh I'd rather rather go for that double lung and heart shot I know I got a little bit of track to do but hopefully too bad so congratulations rker you say yep Riker rker and Dalton they punched that first uh first season drew first blood out there in Kansas so you know hey go go kill their deer and then you come back and kill kill ours so speaking of Kansas I'm sure I'm was not the only missou fan that was it felt weird rooting for Illinois but it did by golly I was so happy to see him pull it off yep I was it's like all of our Rivals kind of melt you know Brett BMA is now the head coach of Illinois who was a former coach at Arkansas is coaching against KU and so I mean if we could have rooted for a meteor that day we probably would have but I guess we got the next best thing and Illinois beating KU and storming the field because of it that's it was crazy they storm the field on KU I mean we did the same thing against Kate last year but I think it was in a much more dramatic fashion that in ended up you know we all know how last year ended but yeah good for good for Illinois I guess good for Brett belma I think last year how we beat K State by you know if 10 points prob not rushing the field no you know it's it's the 61 yard field goal that got everybody hyped and out of their seats and yeah and onto the field so uh you know both seasons coming up very very quickly for the State uh Dove season's been open now hopefully all all y'all that go dove hunting have got to go out and enjoy the festivities of that the tradition of that and hopefully P some good uh Dove breast since the opening season there so uh I think that's going to wrap it up for us on this episode uh two and 0 defense yet to give up points you know we're we're not the only ones to have n FCS and a group of five school on schedule so far but we are the only ones yet to allow
