NFL WEEK 2 PREVIEW: BURROW VS MAHOMES + RAMS INJURIES + CMC UPDATE?! 🔥 | GM Shuffle

[Music] you're listening to the GM Shuffle with Michael Lombardi presented by DraftKings and V sin welcome in to a new episode of GM Shuffle I'm Grace Remington with Michael Lombardi getting you ready for week two of the NFL season we're going to look at Thursday Night Football first between the bills and the Dolphins Miami opening as a one-point favor this line has moved in their favor to two and a half now and that total bet down from 51 to 49 but before we break down the game Michael let's look at some news Dolphins quarterback Jaylen Ramsay agreeing to a record three-year deal worth 72.3 million it makes him the League's highest paid quarterback now what do you think of this new market reset well I think Jaylen Ramsay is remarkable he keeps I mean everybody just wants to keep him quiet so they keep throwing money to him I mean it's remarkable after he does a contract he does a new contract and look this is all a reflection of Chris I have no incentives Olsen up in Atlanta the guy who runs the salary cap who was scared to death of bellich coming in because he might actually have to do something you know they're the only team in the National Football League that does not have any in any player performance offseason bonuses in their contract why because it would require Chris to have to negotiate and work harder so they don't have that and why why wouldn't you have that don't you want your players in the building to work out have offseason programs not the Falcons so when my man Chris I give no I have no offseason bonuses out olssen gives the contract to Terell everybody every corner in the league who knows they're better than Terrell starts knocking on the door saying whoa how about me man how about me pay me my going so Ramsay should send a thank you note to Olsen uh so should Patrick ceran I mean he's going to get he he's going to get a basket full of fruit he's going to get whatever you want for Christmas because this contract made it easy for those agents to call up and say hey it's my time and look you know Atlanta continues to Dazzle you with their performance in everything they do in the offseason Grace you haven't been a part of it you haven't had the whole montage you got it a little bit this week on the on on the show on the on the visent morning line because you know obviously Harrison he didn't had never listened to GM shua before and he walked into the Trap of well everybody had Atlanta being good and you know that wasn't going to fly with me so you know that's why ramsy you know they love Atlanta just keep giving out the money I mean aren't there blanks got a printing press up there maybe he's give some to us maybe you and I can get some coin here oh that would be nice yeah can you put in a word for us I don't think they're talking to me in Atlanta I think they just ignore me I don't think they have any interest in talking to me although they have no way to defend themselves let's be clear they have no way to defend themselves and that performance against Pittsburgh is also more further Evidence but we're not here to talk about them yet we'll get to them later yes um big fan of your Atlanta rant though and can't wait to hear more as the season goes on let's get into this game though Bills Dolphins this will be for the lead in the AFC East Division so what do you think the biggest key to the game is here tonight I I think Jordan puyer is the biggest key to the game and here's why this is the undercurrent to the game so whenever you have a player as smart as Jordan puyer who ran the defense in Buffalo along with mik a hide at Matt Milano those three players know Shawn mcdermid's defense better than any any player they know it as well as Shawn mcder I mean puyer could probably go and coordinate the defense he could make the calls he knows mcder as well as anybody he understands them he gets them right he knows and this is the most important thing about understanding football it's not about what's the adjustment it's always about what's the adjustment to the adjustment so for example puer can Mike McDaniel's offense office and they can do they they can talk about all the the stuff that bothers Shawn mcder scheme and his defense because every defense has answers and every defense has problems and so they could sit in the room and say hey if you do this against them they hate that that forces them to check to this and now you get this throw or if you do that they're going to counter with this or if you see this look from them here's the Blitz and mcder can't change who he is is I mean he's installed this for so many years as a head coach but that information and it's not they're not violating any code of conduct here it's just part of the understanding it you know it's what happens at all the when you go to the combine and all these coaches start talking to one another they're exchanging information to learn and do this but when it gets specific like this with a guy who's made all the calls who understands not only understands the defense in Buffalo he understands what Josh Allen likes and what Josh Allen doesn't like with gives Josh Allen trouble and how to take things away so I think puyer has a huge role we won't hear it on the television networks today but he has a huge role in the game not because he's become a Trader and signed with Miami simply because he's an asset for Miami and their coaching staff yeah I think that's a fantastic point and we heard Mike McDaniel say today the bills own the AFC East they've won the division the last four years so you got to cross enemy territory and look for any Edge you can um fantastic point you brought up there um getting into this specific matchup though obviously both sides going through a little bit of change we still have some questions after week one um but after Jordan puyer what do you think is the key to the game here well I I think the key of the game is Buffalo can't give up big plays I mean when you play Kansas City you got to force them into third Downs you have to ignore excuse me when you play Miami you have to force him in third down you can't you have to ignore how many yards you give up you got to play great red zone defense you got to keep the game in the low 20s kind of like what Jacksonville did and you've got to be able to limit their amount of time with the football you've got to be able to run the ball now heat and humidity are going to be a factor obviously because it's going to be even though it's a night game Miami gains a great advantage in the heat and humidity even though the sun will be down so Buffalo's got to play good in the fourth quarter these games always come down in the fourth quarter and McDaniel was referring to Grace is is the dominance that Josh Howen has had and the fact that Miami never beats a good team now they beat they beat him down there uh two years ago remember that was the Ken dorsy game where he went berserk up in the Press Box and I thought he have to be restrained because they didn't score but they've had their numbers so so you got to limit big play to Miami you you can't let them run the ball for 60 yards you can't let them have confidence in their run game Jacksonville did a good job in that area and you've got to double Tyreek Hill on every single play you got to say okay somebody else beat us than Tyreek Hill we're not giv him a oneplay 80 yard drive that kills you and then if you're Buffalo you want to run the ball you got to hope that cook holds on to the football because he has a propensity to Fumble so you want to be able to control the clock you want to slow the game down you want to do the John mood thing you wanna you want to play you want to play quick but go slow and I think that's what you want to do and you want to get this game into the fourth quarter make it a tight game make Miami feel the heat on them not the heat on you from the from the the humidity make them have to win a tight game and the one thing I would say about every time Miami's offense goes against a coordinator who understands it which I think Ryan neelson did a great job last week for Jacksonville I think he was fabulous no one talks about him as a head coaching candidate but what he did in Atlanta last year with no talent and what he's doing in Jacksonville I think the guy's really sharp so what he did and what he did was other than giving up the big play is he slowed it down gave him yards tighten it down Miami made mistakes I think Buffalo's got to take that same approach get it to the fourth quarter and then take your chances and try to wear down this Miami the weakness is their offensive line and without aan and without morset who probably isn't gonna play you got a chance to slow down this run game yeah that's exactly why I like the bill side keep the ball on the ground wind down the clock and you're right about Miami's the interior offensive line they allowed their running backs just an average of 2.8 yards carry where he already that's why you like the under too though don't you like the under in this game too I think the UND a huge play in this game and there is a correlation between underdogs and unders um typically if it's a lower scoring game you know points come out a premium that's better for the underdog so I think for anyone who doesn't know which side to choose betting the under is a solid one unders also go 60% in Prime Time games but let's uh move on to the other side of the coast here and the 49ers they're dealing with another Christian mcaffrey in inj injury excuse me this time it's achilles tendonitis which Kyle Shanahan told reporters this week that's something that comes and goes when it's acting up it's something you have to be very careful about and you you called this Monday you said he wouldn't play so the way they're dealing with his injury now what kind of impact will that have on the team you know ailly T tonight is strange because my man Bill Burman who's in the office next to me he has it too now he and Christian mcaf niely different in terms of their ability at halfback position uh you know and their quickness and lateral movement but that being said they both share the same problem and it flares up I mean I mean I've seen him barely be able to walk when it flares up he had his Achilles repaired I've seen him barely be able to walk when it flares up I don't think that's the case with mcaffrey and I'm sure he's getting better treatment than my man Bill Burman was getting but the reality here is I think you have to take a long lens view if you're San Francisco you're playing on the turf you know you've got a great game out of Mason you know that you're going to need mcaffrey after Thanksgiving to be at his finest so you want to take a long lens I know the kid trably wants to play but I think he'll be on a pitch count I really do I think you have to kind of ease him back in look they've got enough weapons to create a lot of problems for Minnesota's secondary which is not very good you got to deal with the crowd noise up there that's a factor you got to make sure your offensive Line's playing well Trent Williams is going to be inside it's going to be a lot hotter it's going to be a lot more humid you know he's he's going to have to probably get an IV at halftime even though he played all those plays I'm sure his legs are still weak it was remarkable I thought he was great you know what he was able to accomplish but I think they have to be very careful with Christian I think they have to be understanding there's a long lens here that they have to peek through and they got to find ways to use them and threaten the defense but also not overuse them and come back and where he tears the Achilles right so there's flare up in that I think that it's it's a fine line it's that you know if you tell me when the guy's going to get hurt I'll take him out of the game the bellich line so you never know right I mean you never know if he could get hurt but I think you have to be careful he's got to be on the snap count Grace there's no question in my mind right by the way this NFL news and notes is presented by smaroff the world's number one vodka please drink responsibly so Michael CMC goes out Jordan Mason a guy that most of us had never even heard of goes in 28 Rush attemps almost 150 rushing yards and it's hard to believe but those 28 Rush attempts were actually the most carries in a game for any Kyle Shanahan running back and they still dominated despite losing their best player so how much more confident are you in the ners making a Super Bowl run now uh well I think to me they have a great play caller they have a great play designer I think what Kyle Shanahan proves beyond a shadow of a doubt is what Bill Walsh would say to me all the time every coach wants to draw up pass plays but the great coaches understand how to create a run game and the way Kyle was able to create a run game attacking the the SE gaps outside which people on television thought they were running inside they were really attacking the seag gaps and they had angles on everybody body they were able to use their receivers they were able to get angles and then they let Mason get into the hole and say you got to beat the safety he does a great job of scheming the Run based on fronts I think that'll continue so that's why they have so much success Grace they do and and I think that'll continue because of his ability to design runs not necessarily design passes all right we're going to take a quick break but on the other side we're going to get into more news and notes and some week 2 breakdowns you're listening to the GM Shuff you're listening to the GM Shuffle with Michael Lombardi presented by DraftKings and Vin welcome back to the GM Shuffle presented by smear knoff we do game days please drink responsibly the smaroff co New York New York I'm Grace Remington with Michael Lombardi getting you ready for NFL week too and Michael some of the biggest news out there is the Rams dealing with all of these offensive line injuries not only that they have injuries in the secondary puka nakua will now miss several weeks but this line movement against the Cardinals has been crazy a four-point swing the cards open as a two and a half Point dog they're now a one and a half Point favorite so which injury here do you think is the most impactful and of all these oine additions how does that impact Matthew Stafford well it it really impacts them tremendously it impacts Shawn McVey but the good news on this is they know these linemen are out so they could start Ryan Wendel their offensive line coach can start preparing for who they're going to have they signed a bunch of guys they have four guys on the practice squad that they brought in you know Joe not Blum who was the backup left tackle he's now on IR their starting left tackle Jackson he was suspended for the first two weeks so now they lose their starting center they lose their starting guard they havin has been hurt they're starting right tackle so there's really only one starter left in their offensive line that's why the line movement is so severe but here's what I do know about great quarterbacks and I've seen this with Brady I've seen it with Montana you know when you're a shotgun team when you have a chance you want to run the football you gota you can get rid of the football quick there could be throws that you can get that will be easy throws now Arizona's defense I don't know if you saw any of the Buffalo game is not very impressive it's not good so they'll be able to move the football it it it's problematic that they're playing on the road it'll be tough for them and there's a lot of calls that have to be made if Jonathan gon gets in a lot of pressure packages where now the linemen have to start making calls they haven't been there long enough right that you got to keep it simple like you can't tell the right tackle that we're going to squeeze it when you know against this look but we don't squeeze it against that look I mean there's a propensity for mistake so this is a game that really falls on Matthew Stafford's shoulders to handle it that's the cause wasn't affect look nobody lesne couldn't have prepared for all these injuries in the offensive line it's it's your worst nightmare as a general manager is what do we do you always want to have when you go to training camp I always felt like you needed 12 offensive linemen that have played in the NFL before what does that mean five that start two that could be rotational and then the remaining five have to be able to get you through a preseason game two tackles two guards at a center but the Rams have been depleted where they don't have any of that and it's hard to it's hard to to find these players on the street they a guy off the Philadelphia practice squad they signed a a Tai nitki who's been around the National Football League a bunch he's played left tackle in games I'm sure he'll probably start this game he's on practice squad now you know and then they signed two free agents that brought him on the team it's it's traumatic however but with Stafford and Shawn McVey as a game planner that they'll do a good job of working around it I really think I think the Rams are an attractive play only having a lay a point here I I know injuries are bad but I think they're an attractive play because I have faith in McVey and I have a lot of faith in Matthew Stafford now Thea missing okay I get that Cooper Cup's gonna have to step up I mean look they don't have Higg they don't have they don't have NCA but you know and then they have this offensive line issue which should affect their run game so it it it's problematic there's no question okay on the other side of this game the Cardinals dealing with some drama of their own you'd think they'd get their top dra draft pick Marvin Harrison involved however he had just three Targets on the day against the bills one reception for four yards and then Kyler Murray says this week it's not his job to get him 30 targets a game if you were the GM of that team and you spent first round draft capital on that guy and you hear your quarterback say that how would you respond well I mean his quarterback can't throw doesn't throw the ball down the field last week against Buffalo he averaged 5.5 yards at attemp Buffalo did exactly Shawn mcder is a really good defensive coordinator he's a good head coach but the game plan was perfect their two tackles when you play Kyler Murray your two tackles your two defensive ends cannot run past the quarterback they have to stay inside out on the quarterback they have to force him to step up in the pocket then your two defensive tackles have to push the pocket back and this offensive line for Arizona and I'm GNA be polite is not very good right they lose Jonah Williams who wasn't very good they gave him a one-year contract for 15 million he wasn't very good to begin with with Cincinnati but then he gets hurt Johnson the left tackle was getting pushed back I mean it was a game where finally we saw Von Miller make plays I mean Von Miller went over for last year in terms of tackles and sacks for Buffalo and he ends up getting a sack he got a tackle for loss he puts some pressure on the quarterback I wasn't sure watching the tape was it Miller or was it how bad Arizona's offensive line is Arizona will struggle to block anybody but if you rush Kyler Murray correctly this is why I screamed up and down last year they should have never given him the hund with the 90 million extension he's yet to prove to me that he can throw the ball from the pocket you know the most important thing and we saw this last year last week with quarterbacking is when the other team has to throw it can you throw it when the other team has to run it can you run it and I think now that the book is in Pete Caroll kind of started this book by rushing Kyler Murray a certain way now that the book's in on Murray he doesn't have an answer for it he can't see down the field he tried to and then Harrison really wasn't open if you watch the tape there wasn't separation rash Douglas wired him he wired him there was nowhere to go with the football now against Zone okay there's somewhere to throw it but to me you know it's not always on the scheme it's not on Drew petk it's on the players but I think the biggest issue in in Arizona is if this quarterback doesn't get out of the pocket and start running around they don't have any plays in their playbook you know one thing you want to do as an offensive coach as we mentioned in the last block you want to scheme runs you got to do a good job on that like Walsh would say spend more time on the Run game than the passing game if you want to be a great offensive coach but the reality of this is is they can run the ball in Arizona they just don't have enough plays at quarterback to get him from the pocket it's a liability look you know I've said this a thousand times on prior podcast you're and you're going to hear it a thousand more there's a place in football for the little man it's just not in front of the big man and that's the problem with the with the mayor of munchkinland he's little he just little now when he can run around and make plays he's great but the mayor can't and then he you know to me he never disappoints with his lack of Team you know like he could have easily said hey we all got to get better he could have easily said hey I didn't play very good but of course he throws Harrison under the bus he throws his offensive coordinator under the bus and they paid 90 Millions for this and everybody in the league told him that this guy's I mean Buddha Baker knows that when Buddha when uh I forget who got hurt there was a there was I think it was when Buddha Baker got hurt the whole team was out there on the field looking at him and and Murray was sitting on the bench like not who you want leading your team that's not who you never want that but the owner wants that because they traded they they paid him and they gave him all this money so look you you know when a player shows you who he is believe him Grace yeah no that's one of the truest statements in life uh believe someone when they show you your true colors another quarterback situation happening over in Pittsburgh the Steelers are planning for Justin fields to start against the Broncos with Russell Wilson battling that calf injury so Russ will not get his revenge game against Denver now Michael the question I have for you here is Steelers don't typically lose their jobs due to injury so I don't know does this mean Russ is actually still struggling with this or are they trying to subtly move on to Justin Fields no I mean look they I think they did one of the best coaching jobs of the week last week they did not throw the ball in the middle of the field against Jesse Bates they kept it on the outside they knew it was going to be a tight game you know know they they knew that the the Brilliance of the Atlanta Falcons wouldn't block TJ watt with two men so they took advantage of that but I think to me the calf injury is hard for quarterbacks we see it with look with Kirk Cousins he couldn't drive the football he's got a lower body you got to throw the ball but this is a hard spot for Pittsburgh because Tomlin is 32 and 40 against the spread as a road favorite he's great as the dog not great as as the road favorite so I think that's a real issue and look look I I I don't think Russell could have won the job he wasn't practicing or playing enough I don't think there is a winner of the job in there so to follow your rule to go along with what you said to start this this this question off is I don't know if they ever had a clear-cut winner I don't know if there was a champion I think they were just trying to manage it and now they're trying to manage and game plan against Denver to try to make sure that Justin doesn't turn the ball over doesn't fumble keeps him in the game Yeah you mentioned how that calf injury affects your throwing M motion I remember Joe burrow saying last year when he was dealing with his calf he couldn't fully push off the ground and that affected his throwing mechanics um so looking at Justin Fields though I always kind of thought before this season he would be a better fit for this offense with his mobility and them being a run heavy team uh what do you think they're cealing it with Justin Fields well their ceilings always going to be the same well it's going to be as long as he do turn the ball over they're going to try to win games ugly and if they have to play from behind they're in Double Double Trouble see that's the key they if they don't have see like the three points they gave up at the end of the half the at the Super Bowl winning Champion Atlanta Falcons the points they is that that because now they kept them in the game see if you could get Fields into a 30 pass game a 35 pass game the propensity to make a mistake goes way up and then Pittsburgh's offensive line the problems could show up but when you can't stop the run like the Falcons couldn't do when you kept giving them field goals and getting them points and keeping them themselves game you know it's like Cincinnati allowing the Patriots to play from in front you gotta play you have to determine the first quarter you have to set up your game plan hey here's how we got to play the game now it never goes off script it never does what you think it can do but that's the kind of the way it is Pittsburgh's the way Pittsburgh has to win is very specific they have to play from in front they've got to be able to keep you out of the end zone they got to keep the game close they're just trying to get it to the fourth quarter in a one- score game and see what the hell happens that's their formula now if they get behind 14 to nothing in the second quarter it could go all the way downhill from there so the Steelers a two and a half Point favor on the road at Mile High this game the lowest total of the weekend it's been bet down to 36 and a half and that's the lowest by several points but you have to think the Steelers will come after Nicks a lot especially after way the way Seattle frustrated him how do you see this game going what's the key here well I mean look I know this I bet Shawn pton has said it a thousand times we're not letting TJ watt beat us we're not letting TJ watt beat us we're not let we're not doing what Zack Robinson did we're going to protect and we're gonna take advantage of a secondary that we think we can attack and they're going to give them some easy throws and they're going to try to run the football against them they're going to try to get them into their nickel fronts to give them a better chance at running it and then they're going to try to get in their base fronts to give them a better chance to kind of throw it so they can protect you know and so that's kind of the game you've got to play Sean's a good game planner he'll come up with something but I'll tell you what I mean if TJ watt beats him that would be the biggest surprise of all well good luck to bonck either way all right we're going to take another break here coming up on the other side there's some interesting news coming out of Green Bay could we see Jordan love go this weekend after all we got the update for you next you're listening to the GM Shuffle you're listening to the GM Shuffle with Michael Lombardi presented by DraftKings and Vin welcome back in into the GM Shuffle it's only week two and we've already had some bizarre quotes from some of these NFL coaches but one of the more confusing ones is now coming out of Matt laflor at Green Bay we all thought Jordan love would be potential IR candidate out for four to six weeks after sprinting his MCL against the Eagles now laflor says the door is pretty open on love playing this weekend so Michael what changed from him potentially being out for six weeks to now playing in about eight days well I'm not a doctor but you know when he walked off the Fe I mean we saw what happened you could see his knee shift I thought he dislocated his kneecap but you know a lot of times there's not as much swelling as they anticipated it's not as painful obviously he's going to have to wear a brace but maybe his healing was a direct result of watching Malik Willis play quarterback position you know I Grace it's one of these games that I can't get out of my head I I go back to 2022 in November it was a Sunday night game Tennessee was play I don't know if Nashville at the time but Tennessee was playing Kansas City it was Sunday night and Malik Willis had a start tanah Hill was hurt you know everybody had this big Fanfare over that Malik Willis I mean the worldwide leader had Malik Willis as a top 10 pick the whole season I mean then you know he went in the third round and they were completely shocked by it so he goes in there and you know and it's he's the only player in the history of my NFL career that I've actually seen get benched during a series of a preseason game like he was screwing everything up that Vel had to send somebody else in the play quarterback to get him off the field and which is unfair for the kid but that's just what happen happen so he goes into Kansas City and they're very limited what they could do Kansas City knows it you know everybody knows it he he throws 16 times he completes five passes for 80 yards one of those passes was 48 yards to a tight end screen like literally a tight end screen you just got to throw at them he went 48 yards the other four passes basically gained 32 yards so it wasn't pretty now he ran for I think 50 yards in the game but the the amazing part about this game it's stuck in my crawl is the game got to overtime like the Titans were able to score 17 points and get the game in overtime and Kansas City won in overtime and Mahomes had to make two runs with his feet or else they lose the game so I think probably Green Bay sitting there you know I don't know whose idea it was that Willis can be the starting quarterback there's been no evidence on tape no evidence that that you could say this is going to happen so I think to me you know I think it's probably one of those things where maybe it didn't swell as much you know there is the Willis effect I would be careful I don't understand how ind's not more of a favorite look Indy to me if they don't go into Green Bay and move the ball on Green Bay and stop Green Bay's offense I don't care who's at receiver like Willis challenge Willis to beat him play a play short yardage defense get a goddamn goal line defense until tell Green Bay you're either throwing this ball where we're not letting Josh Jacobs run the goddamn thing on us but that ain't going to be what my man Gus Bradley will do Gus Bradley one of these coaches that drive me crazy right and we had a guy like this in in in in Oakland okay just think about this at the end of the game there's one second ago in the game and they're they're losing by Four Points the team you're playing and say they run short yardage out on the field why they would do that I don't know but our coach would have run short yardage defense out on the field like it makes no sense like play the situation play the situation understand what you're dealing with make Malik Willis beat you but that ain't Bradley as I wrote about for a visent column he's just going to play his stuff and and if the players don't get it right it's their fault not his yeah there's a lot to hit on there um the first you mentioned the spread in this game it's been an eight-point swing I'm looking at the live odds now as we record on Thursday early afternoon Colts are actually now minus two and a half so it is getting a little bit closer so I guess it's now a seven-point swing the Packers opened minus four and a half on the look ahead um then with the Malik Willis news it moved to Colts minus three and a half it's now going back the other way uh with this Jordan love announcement but um back to Malik Willis because you were talking about you know the hype surrounding him in the draft I think people get so caught up on college quarterbacks stuffing the stat sheet because he was thrilling to watch at Liberty but you think about the level of competition and you know this is unrelated right now but people were talking about Riley Leonard being a high draft pick over the summer sometimes these guys are just a good college quarterback and that's okay just leave them there yeah but well remember Malik Willis was at Auburn he was at Auburn with Bo Nicks they were both on the same campus right and you know Bo Nicks won the job Malik Willis transferred now they were in the Gussy mazan offense which is not necessarily a pro and and you know you're right that's perfectly said you can go somewhere and you can start making plays and you can start looking good but this is going to be hard game I mean if you're an Indianapolis Colt if you're in their front office and you're not shutting down Green if he plays under Center and you're not knowing that he's going to run a lot of boots he's going to run a lot of nakeds and they're going to try to run the ball if you don't know that's what you have to stop and they move the ball on you to me as I wrote about you have no chance I mean you have no chance to win I don't care you know to me you have to make your opponent play left-handed you have to understand what the opponent does to then take that away so now going back to your Colts article which everyone can read on von.com it's titled why the Colts can't win you have one quote from that article that caught my attention you say his this is referring to Gus Bradley his basic scheme allows young players to play without overthinking and there in lies the problem his scheme is too basic simple and easy to attack it provides the quarterback with too many easy throws it never takes away the other team's best players so it's seems to me Michael like in order for this defense to succeed he needs really good personnel which the Colts don't have right now and their GM hasn't made Moves right that well they signed everybody back right and so for him to be good they need they need to go to the Hall of Fame and draft have dein Jones play one end you know have have you know the Merlin Olen play tackle have Aaron Donald play the other tackle you know and get and get some other great to get Lawrence Taylor to play the end now you can run that scheme you know you can run that seam it's like when I used to said when I said to belich man you don't even a play sheet he says I got Lawrence Taylor what do I need a play sheet for I'm gonna play flip cover too they can't block them like they can't block them I'm just gonna rush them they can't block them I don't need to get exotic but there's no answer see part of the job of a coordinator is to have an answer so and when you play off Zone coverage when you don't reroute receivers when you're not jamming receivers when you rely on the speed of your underneath coverage and reading the quarterback's shoulders to make plays on the ball the offense is too good they're just too good and so Gus has never adapted Gus is like you know a company he's like Co Kodak Eastman he still thinks he's in the camera business and he forgot he was in the cell phone business like he's never really taken him his off this goes back this this defense that he's running goes back to 1985 with Pete Carol was in Minnesota it started with a three technique it started with a defensive end it's we're going to play cover three we're going to match the coverage as it comes out and you know great and if you have if you have Chris dolman Hall of Famer and you have Keith Mard great player if you have all these guys good it's great but if you don't have them what are you gonna do the Colts def they got four sacks in a game they have good defensive line they have great but they don't give the players any help he doesn't give them any help oh you gotta play better I mean here's the classic what happens to with Gussy you know say he creates a negative play now it's second and 16 he'll come back and play palms or he'll play three and the quarterback throws it for 14 yards it's what happened in the Houston game in the playoff game you he creates a negative play perfect but then he doesn't put any pressure on the quarterback and the next next thing you know you know they're back at a third and two again like that what are we doing like if you if if Aaron Rogers if Tom Brady if Patrick Mahomes can read your mail before the ball snapped you you get no chance it's like you know remember the CIA was reading all of Lee Harvey oswal's mail too so they had no [Music] chance yeah uh Texans absolutely steamrolled the Colts 4177 yards they had 40 Rush attempts and held the ball for 40 minutes averaging 5.3 yards of pop so not great there uh let's try to squeeze in another game here before we hit a break Bengals Chiefs this line has gotten smaller actually it's moving the Bengals way from Chiefs minus six to now minus five um we all know the slow starts under Zack Taylor how do they get up for the Chiefs this week well I think to me this is a classic everybody's betting the Matt Patrick Mahomes whenever he's an underdog whenever he's a favorite in three or less take them whenever he's a favorite by four or more take the other team I think this is just you know a kind of a way not that they don't think they're going to win but it's always a closer game I mean they've Cincinnati has gone in there and played very well the last two times they won a conference Championship game in there and they lost one on a punt return and a penalty they lost that game so I think to me you know there's a sense of confidence by Cincinnati that they know how to play it Gino Stone was in Baltimore he you know they're not intimidated you know they they brought back Von Bell who won in there with Cincinnati so they'll play better I worry about Burrow's wrist I know he says he's healthy but I don't think they looked healthy at all and you know Trent Brown was horrible at right tackle last week he was bad Kenyan white was great against him the second round pick out of Georgia Tech last year I mean they're going to have to fix this offensive line or else it's going to be a long day for Joe burrow in in Arrowhead yeah it does feel like a Buy Low sell High spot for the Bengals um but until we know more about Joe Burrow's injury it's it feels really hard to back them at this point um how do you think it impacts the entire offense this lingering injury well until he gets T Higgins back until we know what's going now this week we've heard nothing about Chase right this has been the first week we haven't seen video of Chase walking to practice is he in shorts is he in clothes because it's what I said he's an NFL player he has a contract either he plays or he doesn't you know we lose sight of that in the summer you know if he don't want to play that's fine he can pretend he's got food poisoning or he could pretend he's got some other elet then he doesn't play and maybe still make his money but then he's got to look at his teammates in the eye that becomes a little bit harder so I think without those two guys and then they're transitioning into a different style of offense they try to use more two tight ends they're not doing as much 11 personnel and when this offensive line isn't playing good then it's a real issue and they haven't I mean look Zack Taylor hasn't won I don't think a game in week two in his NFL career think about that he's not won a game in week two in his NFL career so I think that's a problem you know he I I was counting on him to get his team ready because when you're bad at something like he's been bad at opening day games you think he spends his offseason saying I'm gonna fix this problem like it would drive me crazy I'm gonna fix this problem where there's no way we're not going to be ready to play I don't care what I have to do but for Zach it don't bother him no we'll just we'll lose two games in a row I mean the last two years he's o0 four now he's o0 five in week week one and week two games he loses this one he's owing six I mean when do you solve the pro you're you're paid to solve problems you're not paid to talk about them yeah Bengals one and 10 straight up in weeks one and two 0 and five in week one despite being favored in all of those week one games very odd how the beginning of the regular season has kind of just turned into the Bengals preseason maybe start thinking about getting those players reps uh before or kickoff all right we're going to take a quick break here on the other side we're looking at more week two games you're listening to the GM Shuffle you're listening to the GM Shuffle with Michael Lombardi presented by DraftKings and VN welcome back into the GM Shuffle as we continue to preview these NFL week 2 games let's go to the Browns and Jags now Jacksonville a three Point favor at home with a total of 41 and a half Michael there are not enough words to describe how horrendous the Browns and deshun Watson were last week so I'm just gonna give you the floor you go off well I I think to me this is fascinating game because obviously we know that that Deshawn played horribly they had two the two tackles that they had in there they actually played a lot of games with these two backup tackles but they did but Bill Callahan's not there so they didn't play as well they played a lot better for Bill but when you lose your offensive line coach who's really one of the best coaches in the league you know you can't expect your line to come back so you know look I think this is a problematic game let's just stay on Cleveland for a second Cleveland defense last year was atrocious I mean you know when you look at total yards in their home games they only gave up 1943 yards when you look at them on the road they gave up 3,000 when you look at them on pass defense on the road they gave up 1,00 yards when you look at them on pass defense at home 1100 you know and then the road they gave up a thousand yards they gave up a thousand yards rushing and when they when they were at home I think they only gave up like 800 so you can throw the football on them now they gave up 14 touchdowns on the road they gave up 14 touchdowns at home but this defense last year what's maddening about I didn't hear it the whole broadcast what's maddening about the Browns is it's so interesting they're the worst Red Zone team in all of football yet they're the best third team last year in all football those two things typically don't go together so when you go on the road and you know your defense doesn't play as well on the road heat humidity in Jacksonville will be a problem for the Browns right they their defensive line every guy except for Garrett's over 30 years old they're GNA have to rotate keep guys fresh for the fourth quarter this is a game that I think Jacksonville should win I think there's a lot of a lot of people think that you know because of Watson he hasn't played well we know that and if he plays poorly here I know our man John Fanta is going to call for him to get benched I don't think they can afford to bench him based on the contract but to me this is one of those games where if Cleveland doesn't play good with their quarterback with their offense it's going to be a long year so I did find a trend that actually backs the Jaguars in this spot teams to blow a 10-point lead in week one are 29 and 17 straight up 28 17 and one against the spread that's a 62% cover rate uh in the following week so there to me that kind of says it was there was luck involved there was there was luck involved in that dolphin game Dolphins didn't deserve to win that one so maybe a good spot to uh back the Jags here yeah I I think so I mean to me I wish it were I'm glad that it's three I I like it at three three and a half I probably stay away just know it could come down to a field goal game Grace all right let's look at the Saints and Cowboys now Dallas a six and a half Point home favorite with the total set at 46 and a half Michael I was really excited about this Saints offense I know they were going up against a nobody but look at how I because it's it's one of those things you're like okay it's week one what's true what's not but I think one thing we can take away from this is how Clint kubak modernized that Saints offense a few stats for you Derek Carr used play action on 39% of his drop backs the his highest rate since joining the team and the Saints used pre- snap motion on 85% of dropbacks which led the league in week one and last year they were I don't know the exact numbers but I know they were bottom of the league in those percentages um so did you see any promise there with the Saints yeah you did I mean look they you know I didn't see any from Carolina you know they lose Derek Brown in the game their secondary blows of coverage the first touchdown you could see JC horn screaming to the safety why did you leave the middle of the field and it was an old school play that everybody runs everybody runs that that play and then the safety took the bid on it uh look I think the Saints are Dennis Allen's always gonna do a good job defensively I don't think you could you know you can make fun of Dennis Allen's record as a head coach but their defense is always Rises to the challenge this is a game that Dallas typically now in some shops like Circa this Lin's down to five and a half a lot of professional money coming in on Dallas Grace because everybody loves Dallas in this this is when Dallas plays against a lesser opponent at home where they can where they understand how to attack that Mike McCarthy does do a good job in this area so it'll be interesting to see how this plays out I think the heat the pressure you know one thing about Carr as I you know we call I call Carr Ricky Fowler of football because when he's when he's protected and things are not pressurized he's good but when he starts to get a little heat which the Dallas can bring in in Mike Zimmer's scheme and he can bring some different kind of pressures it can be a problem and you know this Dallas offensive line is young I don't think they played as great as the score indicated against the Browns really when you watch the tape they weren't great but they were able to play from in front which is everything you need to know about Dall I mean Dallas has to you know they had 124 Point first half Point differential last year that's why they were so effective and you know that's why they were so good and they only lost one they lost five Road games last year and they won all their home games the last home game they played they lost unfortunately to Green Bay so if it's five and a half I'm leaning Dallas here I think Dallas wins by a touchdown I think they'll pressure but I think it'll be a fun game to watch I like that and I'm glad you brought up the pressure too because I saw people hyping up the Saints o line they allowed pressure on just three dropbacks yeah but can they do the same against Micah Parsons because they brought the pressure last week against DeShaun Watson pressuring him on 43% of plays it's not going to be the same thing for Derek Carr here no I mean they're going to heat it up and Mike Zimmer is really good on third down they're going to make Carr have to make plays now you know what's the best way to handle third down don't get into third down and so they're going to have to try to run the ball this cowbo we're not sure this saying offensive line is very good on the road I think that's the other aspect you play at home you get the advantage with the crowd noise all those things but I think going on the road it becomes a little bit of a different story so for me uh you know I think this is when Dallas is at their best I think Dak coming off the new contract certainly is is going to be good and then if vlore doesn't play he's questionable to play in the game at corner I think that's an issue as well because somebody's going to have to go C cover CD lamb and it's not going to be any of the other corners yeah and I was about to add for betters out there make sure you keep an eye out for Jake Ferguson's injury status he's dealing with a knee hasn't been ruled out yet but if he doesn't go you don't want it to turn into a oneman show with CD lamb that would definitely limit their offense there uh one more game we want to get to here the NFC East Giants at commanders with the home team Washington a one and a half Point favorite uh the total set I know it's hard to make anyone a a favorite in this one it just feels like it's going to be a mess but the total set at 44 and a half how do you feel this one's going to go I I if New York doesn't win this game I have a bet with somebody for a Coke I I I think New York wins the game I mean Washington secondary is the worst secondary I've ever seen in my life I mean they can't you know they made Baker Mayfield look like he was Drew Brees all over again you know easy throws uh I know it's a home game for was Dan Quinn's first home game but I don't think Washington's very good at all they have no consistency at quarterback in terms of what can they get into what can they run the offensive Line's problematic and then defensively the two best players are the defensive tackles can they pressure Daniel Jones Danel Jones reminds me of David Carr now you know David Carr got hit so many times when he was first playing in Houston that you know he he any Effectiveness that he had washed away because his eye level came way down and he was looking at the rush more that's why he throws checkdowns all the time I mean if I'm Brian Dall the first play of the game I'm calling as a n route second play of the game I'm calling a n I'm going I want the defense to think I'm going to throw it up the field because nobody thinks he will throw it up the field in this offensive line for all the things we heard about from Joe Shane and improving and we got to take care of Daniel Jones they haven't improved that offensive line one bit they they hired the Raiders that offensive line from last year nobody thought the Raiders line last year was good enough the right side of this line is the Raider line how is that any good so but if they don't win this game Grace if they don't win this one if the Giants don't win this one it's going to be a long Seas did you see Lawrence TL's comments Lawrence Taylor said he could find 22 guys that play better than these guys could I mean that's that's a legendary player yeah that's a legendary player talking about his team and he said it to Carl Banks and Carl's the broadcast I mean Carl's ripped me before I love Carl to death but what I called the team having the disease of me last year which they did which they did and they fell into that trap which I warned them but they didn't listen uh you know he he ripped me for it and now that everybody's happy everybody's paid except for the poor owner John Mara who's not happy and he has to he's going to have to watch seon Barkley on Monday night I mean Imagine John Mara's play he's gotta Play WA if he loses to Washington in Washington he's got to go home on the train and then he's gotta sit it in his house on Monday night and listen to all the people talk about Barkley and listen to all and then watch Barkley run up and down the field on the Super Bowl winning Champion Atlanta Falcons I mean that could be really that that that that gets the owners that's when oh my God this is bad yeah I'm sure he has major fomo um I want to ask you a quick question because we have to get to your your best bet um but I was reading a scathing review of the Commander's debut of jadden Daniels in the Washington Post I'm from that area and the Washington Post goes hard on that team but they think it's gonna turn into an RG3 situation last in his debut he ran 16 times got his helmet just blown off his head um what do you think is the right way to play him I I think they got to try to stop them from running I think they're you know they're so married to shotgun I think you should put them under Center you know they can't do a lot of things effectively but they can't just keep letting him run around he's gonna get hurt he's thinned I agree you know and you blow out your knee or you do something like that you you got to find see drafting a quarterback's great but after you before you draft a quarterback you got to say what are we going to run what are we going to get good at doing and I'm not sure that's the case in Washington I don't really see a whole lot of improvement when I watch Washington's team in terms of the Talent level from last year to this year in terms of the coaching I mean they were their secondary is as poor as it could possibly be I think it's going to be a tough one that's why if I had any guts I'd play the Giants you know I would I would do that if if you had any guts this week you take the Giants and the Panthers because the Chargers didn't play very good in week one and there is to be a six-point favorite against anybody is a joke on the road oh my yeah I don't I don't mind the creran mindset um let's get into our DraftKings bet highlight now presented by DraftKings the crown is yours Michael which team are you looking at here look I don't think Shawn McVey is going on too I don't give a crap who he has in his offensive line I I'm you're going to give me a point and a half in the Rams I'm going to take that I think that's going to be one of my Russo plays it could be the first one I know they're hurt I understand that they got a lot of injuries I get that but I'm gonna go with Shawn who's a great offensive play caller he's a designer and Matthew Stafford who I thought was Sensational last week to throw the ball against one of the worst defenses I've seen in a long time plus they don't have great pass rushers so look just stand in front of them let Stafford handle the game and you're going to give me a point and a half I'll take it Grace yeah I like it keep it simple all right so our DraftKings bet highlight Rams plus one and a half at the Cardinals this has been our week two preview on the GM Shuffle uh download your podcast wherever you get them make sure you subscribe leave a comment we'll be back here next Monday with our recap of week two for
