INTENSE GAME! PENN STATE VS NC STATE FULL GAMEPLAY

hi and welcome to Beaver Stadium home to the Penn State nitty Lions one of the largest crowds in college football assembled here colliding here today two top 25 teams having tremendous Seasons set to battle it out against one another as we'll see the number 22 team of the country the NC State wol pack taking on the seventh ranked team in the land Penn State NY Lions the EA sport college football I'm Chris Fowler joined here in the booth by Kirk herb Street Kirk let's get to the action on the [Applause] [Music] [Applause] field the NY Lions will kick this away and start us off the turn starts from inside the five be tackled at the 17 strong job by the coverage team so NC States offense traps out there to open this game there's the star running back jogging out of the field he is trying to add to his huge highlight re C Chris honestly I don't think we've seen too many running backs who can duplicate what this guy can do on the field he's got everything Vision speed power he can diagnose the defense in real time they're really excited to see this kid play you know we talked this week with the offensive coordinator about what makes this receiver so special he kept referring to his route running here's an example of that great route enough separation to give the quarterback a nice Lane to throw the football NC State comes to the line quickly they'll run it from the gun he's found some room at the 45 he's brought down but a solid gain moves the ball across Midfield to the 41 and a player is down injured after that last play we'll take a timeout while they check him out listen to the crowd energy here in the early going this is a tough tough environment for visitors they'll run it here running back has the ball you know in that era that we live in right now everybody wants to spread the field round try to create space try to create one-onone matchups and the defense has countered over the years by trying to play out wide but here's a great example the defense has the ability to play wide but still be solid at the line of scrimmage and not give up big run plays offense getting set up here's second down scanning the field it's Mcall caught by the bat behind the line of scrimmage defense surrounds him just a short gain on that completion Chris the more we watch these spread offenses attack in today's game it's not just about the vertical shots with the taller receivers on the outside defenses are challenged even more by those smaller slop receivers and their quickness in space offense needing to keep this drive alive it's a third down play using his legs it's Waters moves the football to the 30 good enough for a first down boy an opportunity missed here by this defense they get him to third down they load up the line of scrimmage but they could not deny this back of coming up with that conversion NC State getting set with a first and 10 now it's a run running back's got it they stop him after a 6yd gain so second and four great job by his offensive line here opening up some hols and giving the running back room to run on first down plays like this can open up the playbook for the play caller allow him to make that defense think are they going to run maybe play action maybe throw the ball down field second down after that run on the previous play they'll run it out of the shotgun he's got some room can he get there and he runs it into the end zone touchdown NC State well that's a touchdown on the board here early in the game for him and Chris intentional or not look how much time they took off the clock here in the opening corner so not only did they get a touchdown they took the air out of the ball as well they're set now to try the pat for the extra point in the p makes it s nothing that makes the score NC now they get set to kick it away and he takes this from inside the five and he stopped at the 20 triying to make something at half a minutes good coverage there so Penn State's offense out there for their first possession and with such a dangerous wide receiver on the field here puts a lot of stress in the secondary this strong safety CK maybe not necessarily builds as a great coverage guy who's going to have to be big today yeah he really is Chris he's known for his physicality this safety is going to have to do a good job of cleaning up tackles but also being an extra guy to play keep away he's good at doing both but this receiver has great ball skills and the ability to break away with speed going to be a unique matchup to follow the offense will line up chance for a couple more plays before the end of the quarter so far it's NC State on top C let's check out the stats now could be opening [Music] period plenty of time for some plot twist here as we begin the second quarter a first and 10 play they'll run it hand it off to the running back it'll be a enough for a first down brought down at the 43 how about the offensive line here just a hat on a hat opening up just enough room for the back to squeeze through there for a nice game to First and 10 play coming up for the offense looking to pass it's Allen thr to the tight end looks down field and finds a receiver who worked his way wide open TouchDown Mitty Lions this quarterback on fire today such a well-designed play Here by this offense to find a way to get the ball to the gifted tight end he's got the size he's got the speed he's a difficult match up and here he shows he's got the speed to take it all the way into the end zone for that touchdown [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] here's the point after attempt on for the extra point and there's the point [Applause] [Music] after here's the kickoff team Now set to boot this one away and the kickoff will be a return makes it to the 16 that's good coverage there so here comes the wol pack offense back out on the field last possession the defense just had no answer for this powerful ground game let's see what they can do this time pressured and dropped back at the 8 yd line looks like a player is down injured at that last play we'll take a timeout where they check it out and wow listen to this crowd noise this stadium is vibrating that's why this is such a tough place for visitors to play on the shotgun it's a hand off to get him down the gain is to about the 12 Chris it's the consistency of this pack is giving this defense fit they've got to come up with some changes up front this guy's already over 50 yards and if he keeps running the way he is not only is he having a great day it's going to give this quarterback a chance to hit some big plays downfield off play action drops back looking to throw for it on third down this one's going to fall incomplete brings up fourth down Chris obviously they had to go through the air there to try to pick up this third down and long but when you're so far behind the chains but you really allow this defense that dictate things and allows them to put pressure on your quarterback and can affect the timing as we saw on this play pass incomplete so here comes the punt team and it's fair caught right about the 45 yd line and the Penn State offense is back out on the field remember last time they scored a touchdown can they keep clicking here over the defense come up with a stop from the shotgun now here's a hand off inside brought down after a seven yd gain so it's second and three just love watching this back run Gets behind that offensive line lowers his pads against a nice solid game we'll take a quick pause before the half as we reach the two-minute warning second down play coming up looking downfield it's Allen Let's It Go quickly he's got his man in the open field heads out of bounds after a solid gain more than enough to pick up a first down you call Quick out on third down I think that tells you the confidence you have in a quarterback to be able to make that throw and on top of that little surpris the defense would give that kind of cushion to be able to give him room to pick up that first down on First and 10 looking to throw caught over the middle it's Fleming game moves the ball to the seven yd line offense has a first and goal now so two big plays in the road the defense is reeling here now it's first and goal from the shotgun he's probing the secondary makes the catch can he get in and he scores touchdown and state this guy can do it all we've seen him go behind coverage and make plays down field we can see him catch the ball underneath just like this and when he catches a football he is so dangerous after the catch this one leads him into the end zone for the six points [Music] and now they'll set up for the point after for the extra point P makes it a seven-point lead now the kickoff team is out on the field Fields it inside the 5yd line coverage team able to bring him down first down play call coming up how aggressive will it be scanning the field it's Mall the pocket breaking down they stop him at the 34 that will be a first down boy Chris great timing here with a quarterback against that zone defense waiting just at the right time to deliver it into that window to pick up a nice game looking to throw it under first down the sh hands it's Collins and he breaks the tackle on the way to a solid gain there love the timing here between the quarterback and his receiver pick up some positive yards I continue to be impressed with just the the chemistry between these two look crank up the tempo here with the clock ticking down second down quarterback drops back from the shotgun looking for a receiver grab down the middle it's concepion the timeout is called important stage late here in the second quarter but here the defense decided to sit back in Play Zone and that front didn't do a good job of pressuring the quarterback he had the time to make the throw and he put it on target caught over the middle it's Waters tackled quickly after the catch he'll be short of the marker well this is the risk you take when you play mantoan coverage and you leave a linebacker on running back quarterback does a nice job of seeing that mismatch and getting the ball to the back for some good yards so the offense takes the field in the final seconds of the half chance for just a couple more plays looking to pass here on second down makes a quick catch so a timeout is called to talk strategy maybe time for one or two more plays before halftime so on first down the field goal unit will come out there trying to get three points before the half and he's got it from 58 yds away never in doubt personal foul nothing the kicker defense the offense will obviously decline that penalty and take the result on the play and that will do it for the first half here Kevin Connors now has our halftime update gentlemen what a pleasure it's been to watch these two teams thus far there in Happy Valley and I get it a lot of coaches will say the difference between winning and losing comes down to stopping big plays and getting big plays but if you ask me it's more about how good you are on third down and how efficient you are in keeping drives alive those two stats can help you break the will of even the best defenses and help you come out on top either way it's time to find out back to the best in the biz for the start of this third quarter kickoff team is on the field let see if they give the returner chance to bring this one back bringing it out it's Singleton to be tackled at the 17 strong job by the coverage team and the penate offense comes back on the field first and 10 first play of the second half is a handoff finds room at the 30 they bring him down but a big chk of yardage on the play how about setting the edge there on the right side of that offensive line I wouldn't be surprised if they keep going back to the well pounding it behind that Right Guard and right tackle and tight end seeing what additional damage they can do so the offense with the first and 10 now the football placed exactly at Midfield they de feed the back again that's a nice tackle there by the senior Christino the spread era over the years has always grown offensively but I've been always impressed with the defenses that really build their defense to play in space still have an ability to be sound at the line of scrimmage and defend a running game it's exactly what we saw right there second down after that run on the previous play back now goes in motion defense will have to adjust looking to throw it deep the pass is drop incomplete would have had a huge gain took his eye off the ball Chris I thought he had his hands on that football I thought he was going to come down with it but give the defense all the credit with a big hit to knock that ball loose they come to the line a long way to go for the first down but needing this crucial conversion right now on third down he drops to throw grab down the middle it's Fleming an explosive play they'll finally make the tackle down at the 27 yd line and you just continue to see the chemistry between these two and they told us yesterday in our production meeting they spent hours and hours of working and developing that chemistry and that Rhythm by throwing together throughout those summer months and man it's starting to really pay off he's become his security blanket for the quarterback and especially on third down get him the ball and the nney lions will hustle to the line to crank the tempo off the play fake looking to throw fires it to the wide out caught over the middle it's Fleming The Tackle is made the offense is now set up with a first and goal from the eight that's an excellent throw by the quarterback finding that window between the zones and delivering the ball on time miny liance line it up with first and goal dropping back it's Allen he's got it near the end zone and he will score touchdown nitty LS so the offense flexing Kirk and stretching the lead here now in the second half well you can catch your breath here a little bit if you're this offense that touchdown can help you out but now your own defense can help you preserve the lead so you can go back out and continue to build upon that to the Finish [Music] and they'll set up now for the extra point try for the extra point extra point makes the lead 11 that [Music] kickoff team on the field getting set [Applause] now Fields it just outside the goal line returner is brought down it's to started with the next Drive toan Cate offense is back out on the field now the last Drive produced three points thanks to an excellent longrange field goal here comes a first down pass attempt he's got an open man downfield and it's caught and they'll move the six on that one it's a first down to the 42 the defense has spread all over the field creating some one-on-one matchups and a quarterback Mak some pay for it so one play moves the ball to the 42 yd line it'll be first down they're going to run it here and they'll stop him short at the line to gain defense does a really nice job here being able to contain that one game help him just been two yards chis to me he's changing the Playbook a little bit now for the offense guy calling a plays at second and eight that's a different deal now he's got to probably thinking about going through the air instead of staying on the ground same tail back another carry breaks loose at the 45 he's brought down but a solid gain moves the ball across Midfield to the 41 as we wrap up the third quarter check out the comparison of these big play wide receivers both guys have been lighting it up so far [Music] today one quarter to go let's see if this sets up as a classic finish NC State getting set with a first and 10 now caught behind the line it's Collins the defense drops him loss he went backwards there a second down behind the sticks now couple things that really stood out to me here Chris on this nice play by the corner awareness to be able to see the wide receiver screen and then the willingness to get involved in run support and make the tackle great play back to throw it's Mcall Running Out of Time nowhere to go here and the ball is knocked loose now the defense is got it going the other way how about this defense flying in there trying to get their hat on the ball they do and they're able to bounce on it for a big turnover [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] and the nitty Lions offense retakes the field trying to build on beautiful balance touchdown tronic last time they had it they'll just try to run some clock here keeping it on the ground man just complimentary football really in a nutshell they get his football back thanks to their own defense creating that turnover working with the lead like this really it's all bit over now the offense is just thinking about running the football and working that clock second down after that run on the previous play and he's got it again they bring him down but that game moves the ball all the way to the 31 you everybody always wants to talk about quarterbacks today and receivers and don't get me wrong that's a big part of the evolution of the game and where we are but man for me as a fan when I'm watching a game there's just something satisfying about the teams and the offenses that still have backs that can carry the ball and come up with plays like that move those sticks and keep this drive going second down coming up a gain makes it second and medium and that's the two-minute warning as this offense tries to work the clock getting closer now to an impressive victory offense getting set it's second down and the single back takes the hand off that run produces a decent game and now it's the defense that calls timeout here trying to get organized and preserve as much clock as possible well they didn't bust that for a big play but it makes this third down coming up a little bit more manageable and that certainly has a lot of value in the third and short they'll try to throw for it but they can't make the connection Ball's incomplete interesting call here Chris to throw the ball on Third and short unable to come up with a first down now here at fourth down you got a big decision to make do you kick the field goal just to add to the lead or maybe go for this here with a chance to drop the hammer and they will TR out the field goal team here this will be a 39 yd attempt and the kick is good offense settles for on the drive and they add to their lead I was watching this guy in pregame he has got a strong leg I'm surprised here he's able to put three points up here for the [Music] [Applause] [Music] offense following the field goal the kickoff team is out there now he's going to return it from near the goal line and he's stopped at the 19 good job by the coverage team here comes the NC State offense back out on the field now they moved it well last time got across the 50 but then fumbled the football away time is running out they'll take a deep shot breaks clear Endzone ahead touchdown Wolfpack strong game by this quarterback what a score by this offense and the greatest thing Chris is they still left themselves with a little bit of time and now you're thinking onside kick if they can recover it you never know see if they can convert the point after is on the exra point P up and good they get a little bit closer that makes the score pen St 24 NC St formation with indate they're going to try the onside kick [Applause] here and the receiving team makes the recovery the hands team does its job perfectly and the pen State offense is back out on the field and they play deep away here just protect this lead in the final two minutes the go with the ground game here running back takes the hand off breaks a tackle on the play and makes a decent game now a timeout taken by the defense trying to preserve as much clock as possible for their offense getting set here's second down they'll keep it on the ground trying to run some clock they try to run inside but nowhere to go and now it's the defense that calls timeout here trying to get organized and preserve as much clock as possible it's third down for the offense [Applause] they pick up the first on the ground goes backwards losing three yards there that was that excellent linebacker with a clear path just running downhill quickly you know I think one of the great things about watching this guy play all year is his vision he just has great instincts that time the defensive line ate up all the linan freed up the linebacker to get into the back field and the result is a tackle for a loss for the backer Med kick right down the middle can't hit it any better than that and that will extend their lead even further what this guy had plenty of leg here too trust you remember the days when a kick from 50 plus was a major accomplishment now these guys knock these out like they're almost automatic [Music] [Applause] after extending the lead with the field goal they'll kick it off now trying to make the offense go a long way to win it he'll return it from inside the five solid job by the coverage team they bring him down at the 16 so here comes the L pack offense back out on the field last time out a oneplay touchdown drive through the air and they keep it going pressur and dropped back at the 8 yd line and just like that you squeeze the life out of this offense that's another sack by this defense they have been in that back field the entire game and a big reason why these guys are enjoying a lead they'll hurry to the line here with the clock running the offense spikes the ball here looking to preserve as much clock as they can it's third down and this crowd coming to life here trying to help the defense get a stop with the offense Pinn back now in third and very long looking to throw trying to get the throw off and he just throws that one away took a big shot but avoids the sack well that's not what you want to see as an offense when you're trailing late in a football game an incompletion on third down and long it's a bit of a risk but with that clock looking the way it looks right now I think he got to go for it here and hope to convert on Fourth and long fourth down he's throwing for it and now in the final couple minutes here's a deep shot catch made for a big game but the fans are wondering where was that earlier in this football game [Applause] NC State getting set with a first and 10 now to throw it's Mcall fires it to the Wi out here's a wide openen receiver complete touchdown North Carolina State this quarterback on fire today you took about reaching back and showing the arm strength he didn't get there that time yeah they actually work on this believe it or not in practice every receiver has a position to be in whether it's the front or the back or in the middle then you just hope for maybe a tip ball goes up into the air and somebody comes down with it
