Duke vs. Elon 2024 season opener preview; Jesper Fast out for the 2024-25 NHL season

we're about to find out Duke Blue Devils take another piece of the ACC to a Friday night there's actually two ACC games tonight but we're going to focus on Duke as they open up the show against Elon joining us on the heaster Automotive Group hotline his play-by-play announcer extraordinary gets to see these Blue Devils up and close every year as David shid and David I don't talk about individual players too much but we've been all about anticipation for all these teams in a new season we got to see the fact that at Carolina Omarian Hampton is the guy we got to see it State last night that Casey concepion still manages to stir the offensive drink but what does Jonathan Brewer the brand new offensive coordinator at Duke have in store for Blue Devils fans this season a lot of plays uh I thanks me first off no I mean I think the the thing that Duke fans are super excited to see this year is how fast this offense is going to go if you've seen what Rett Lashley has done at SMU and of course down at Miami Manny Diaz was there that's kind of where Jonathan Brewer was at before he came to Duke so I think that's what to me is is going to be most intriguing is how quickly this offense goes tonight and and how they execute with deep balls and things like that but I think speed is the operative word as duke gets set to start the season which will be fun to see and of course on the defensive side of things you may want to talk about Jonathan pacw is the defensive coordinator who comes over from Texas State kind of a similar theme wanting to attack wanting to set the tempo so I think it's going to be a Duke team that really wants to dictate terms tonight David sh mate voice of the Blue Devils joining us on next up this morning you can hear David on the call on 99.9 HD2 and 620 a.m Buzz sports radio David first things first Happy game day sure it feels like Christmas morning for you and I want to ask you when Malik Murphy leading this Duke offense what kind of chemistry have you noticed between him and this receiving court at practice and are there any particular connections that could be key in tonight's matchup well I mean it's hard not to see what Jordan Moore has turned into as a wide receiver guy who came in here you know three years ago trying to be the starting quarterback he and Riley Leonard were comp competing to be the starting quarterback in Mike ELO's first year and Riley obviously won the job but I think the coaching staff realized we got to get this guy on the field he's too good of a player and now Jordan Moore is turned into at least to my one of the most explosive and dynamic wide receivers in the ACC so I think you have to start there um with the connection that he has uh with any quarterback he's playing with but certainly um with Malik Murphy and I think the thing that makes this wide receiver group interesting this year is how deep they are I mean I was talking with the coaches yesterday Duke's got six guys that can roll there at wide receiver to have that depth I think is important you're gonna hear a name in the slot Quon Brown who's gonna have an explosive year I think Eli pankl who's been dealing with injuries the last couple years is healthy in back Samir Hagen I could go on down the list but to me you have to start with Jordan Moore his catch radius is incredible his ability in space just to get open he's got everything thing you want from white out and he's also older now and experience so to me you got to start with Jordan Moore I think he's gonna have to lead that wide receiver room this year Jonathan paty defensive coordinator for the Duke Blue Devils will'll have to take on a guy at Elon in Matthew Downing who is in who had a pretty solid season for Elon last season I'm not trying to Discount Elon because we talk about discounting FCS teams and all of a sudden they've been surprising a lot of folks certainly early in football games how does he counter what what Downing brings to the table he is a senior and he knows what he he knows his stuff he's not just a senior it's his seven season playing college football that's played yeah really high levels started his career Georgia spent some time at TCU so this is a guy that knows what he's doing and when you look at what he did particularly the second half of the season last year for Elon really coming on averaging about 300 yards a game didn't have an interception down the stretch only had four for the entire year so Duke is very much aware of the challenge that elon's going to present at quarterback and then obviously returning four of their top five offensive linemen is a key and by the way the fifth guy is going to start for Duke tonight Caleb cranks so you kind of have that connection um along the offensive line but no I think they're aware of everything he can do Bray boy is an explosive receiver so I think this is a game that Duke has a ton of respect for what Elon brings to the table and Tony trani has built there you know their coaching staff has talked about being a developmental program what they bring to the table well to my eye developmental programs are really scary when they're old old and elon's older so this is a group that you know has been a game away from winning the ca the last couple years so I think Duke knows tonight they got to come out with their best foot forward against an Elon team that that's look looking to pull an upset and I think is Duke is very much aware of what Downing and all of them can do put some respect on the FCS I love it David that's why you're a scholar but also you're a play-by-play commentary because you have to paint the picture for both sides of thing going back to Duke in what ways do you think the roster changes have influenced this team identity compared to last year with Mike Elco what what do you expect to see as far as a different style of play from duke this year starting with tonight's game against Elon well there's gonna be new faces right I mean just shy of 50 new guys I think is the most in the ACC so um it's going to look new you're going to hear some new names but I do think stylistically this is a team that's GNA be able to play within themselves that is comfortable with the culture that they've built and I think that maybe hasn't been talked about as much as it could be in the preseason because there's been so much focus on a new coaching staff coming in all the transfers that were brought in along the offensive line at linebacker we could go on down the list but you have guys like Aaron Hall who've been in that defensive line room for a while who stepped up he's a captain he's going to start tonight at defensive tackle you know you have guys on the offensive side of things we talked about Jordan Moore you have D Mullen you have Brian Parker who got some starts along the offensive line so you have some continuity there and you also have some continuity with in that coaching step albe it being new and the biggest piece being David fely uh the strength and conditioning coach that decided to stay so the off season workouts really haven't felt that different for these guys and everyone talks about the church ofely and how hard the workouts are for Duke when you're going Temple I think that works been really important in the heat over the summer um so to me it's the culture of the team the identity of the team that has made all of this new whether it be coaches or Personnel a little more seamless than maybe you would see in a typical transition David sh mate play byplay for the Duke Blue Devils joining us here on next up on 999 the fan David Beyond The W Beyond The Devil's Deck beyond the social media influencers and whatnot what makes the actual fan base happy tonight Beyond just a win I think they want to see stylistically what this is going to be I mean look there's a lot of success the last couple of years with you know kind of fall control control the clock you know make teams drive down the field was kind of the defensive philosophy and with a strong Run game that's how Duke kind of won their games I think this year it's going to look very different It's Kind talking earlier it's going to be attack it's going to be an offense that's explosive and and moves the football down the field so I think look everyone every fan wants to see how the quarterback's going to play I think M Malik murky is gonna have a huge season and I think they're going to see some deep balls and they're going to see what he can do in the arm Talent he has to hit all the different shoulders that you need to to create those explosive plays not just you know the initial 10 15 yards but leading someone so that can turn into to a long touchdown or a huge game down the field and I think that's what Duke fans are really excited to see because you got a glimpse of it last year what he did at Texas so when Manny Diaz runs out of the tunnel tonight David is he a raise the roof guy is he just gonna come out and just jog out onto the field my man so I tell you a quick story with Coach that I was talking to him yesterday getting ready for the game today a little preview of our our our pregame interview I was asking him kind of what is he most excited about for an opener and then he said that he was most excited to fix things and he talk in the offseason about one of the things he's kind of encouraged the guys to do is like you know run towards failure so to speak so that you can learn from it and get better so this is a guy that lives eats and breathes football he loves the intricacies of the game so I think it's more like a a tactician like he's gonna be ready to get to work you know I thought he might say like fireworks or the students or things like that he goes no no now we can get to work and we can start to fix things so he's a football junkie so I think it's business time for the head coach but don't run towards failure too much where it's sort of a a repeat of NC State versus Western Carolina last night correct well no I don't think the overall result is we talking about it's like a rep and pick something and learn from it but I mean I think that's the look The the way the sport is these days with transfers and everybody getting old I think people have to reset expectations about like you're not just going to roll out and beat FCS teams by 50 or 60 points you'd love to of course but you know everyone's working their tail off and you can get old quick through the portal and everyone's got pieces and everyone's fired up and ready to go and I think you're seeing that across the country that if you come out and you make mistakes or you don't tackle well or whatever you can find yourself in a game you saw SMU a week ago you saw what happened to stories and more on wosports fan.com we're actually going to talk a little hockey this morning I know college football Demands a lot of attention and it is true uh the NFL is in kind of that quiet period so it's why we're not chopping it up about the Panthers today I think you need a little break from the Panthers because really it's just about let's go play some damn games now uh we do have to start with some sad news uh we learned just this morning and a lot of reports came out last night but we're unconfirmed but we woke up to it this morning and uh it's a shock to the NHL Columbus Blue Jackets Winger seven time All-Star Johnny gdo he and his brother were killed last night they were struck by a vehicle or riding bicycles uh they were uh just uh north of where they grew up in New Jersey they grew up in Salem New Jersey uh which is near Wilmington Delaware if you're familiar with that area uh they were bicycling in a in a Township and the driver of a Jeep uh hit them from behind as they were trying to pass an SUV that had moved over to make way for the bicycles uh they were supposed to be Johnny Gad and his brother Matthew Matthew also playing hockey as well minorly hockey uh were supposed to be in their sister's wedding today terrible uh this is uh clearly brought out a lot of uh uh emotion from the NHL certainly from all the teams Carolina Hurricanes uh issued a statement about 20 ago on social media expressing the teams and the organizations condolences as well uh the Blue Jackets also doing the same recognizing also more of his family as well uh this is a a tough a tough tragic situation to discuss but it's one of those things that you know you don't want to just let go without at least taking notice because by all accounts Not only was he a great hockey player but was also a very good family man and was also a good just Ambassador for the sport man played for team North America and team us say on many occasions he was that skilled of a player uh so that's the news this morning uh about the Columbus Blue Jackets all right let's kind of just slide that over and let's slide something else in Carolina Hurricanes fans waking up to the reality that yesper fost has likely played his last game in a Carolina Hurricanes uniform we got word yesterday that he underwent neck surgery this as a result of the injury that he took in last season's season finale like the regular season finale cuz remember he didn't play in any of the playoff games hurt his neck in an inconsequential game I mean they're all consequential games for professionals but in a game that really didn't mean much to the Carolina Hurricanes he got hurt unfortunately for quickie uh it also meant he had e neck surgery which took place three weeks ago uh that word coming around from the organization means there is now a missing member of the third line or the second line or whatever line the Jordan Stall line and now the Carolina Hurricanes have to figure that one out and this team and had mentioned prior to the the pree prior to this season and the regime change that took over in the front office that they might be more willing to play some younger players this is the hand that is being forced I think for the Carolina Hurricanes and who will Jordan Stall trust to go along with him if he is also paired with Jordan martinuk that is the biggest question right now for the Carolina Hurricanes there are some you know some answers but I'm not sure they're the obvious ones until we actually let Camp play out in three weeks there's two questions that I have for you Paul uh one what does this open up as far as Marty aes's role for the team this season and then the second one is now what does this do with SE Jarvis's contract that needs to be renewed before the start of the Season which preseason hockey begins here in just about 25 days but you know the you you hate this for yes peros but what opportunity does this now create within the franchise with some of these returning players coming back this season well it it definitely creates opportunity let's address the Jarvis issue first when we were out at the plaza yesterday Tim Donnell got to talk with a few insiders the Carolina organization and while we didn't get any tips on fast they were very clear about Seth Jarvis and that contract is closer to the Finish than it is at the start while it's felt like this trudging process I think for fans is something that'll that will get done I believe the word was cross some te's and Dot the lowercase eyes Okay is where they're at with Seth Jarvis this creates if if fost is moved to long-term IR which is the most likely route for that they get some salary cap relief and whatever number that was placed in front of Seth Jarvis which has been reported to be between 7 a. half and $8 million will get done Andre sikov is making $7.75 million right now as a Carolina hurricane for the next five seasons right and so you hope that you're tying Seth Jarvis's contract to 22-year-old Seth Jarvis who will turn you know 23 by the end of the year early next year right because it's always the All-Star break for Seth Jarvis and the birthdays that he would be tied at least to AO and fetch through the next five seasons if not even longer into into that 2029 season where you also have coken Yami if you choose to keep him around and you also have uh Bill ker who comes at a very nice price at $2 million so there's room for Seth jarvis' deal to get done whether that gets today whether that's after the weekend I would hope it certainly happens before Camp since the captains are already Skating here in town and the majority of folks are back in the Raleigh area going through skate so that's the deal but Seth Jarvis will not take the ice until that deal gets done he has no he has no reason to get under the ice until that deal gets done so don't expect any social media pictures or Instagram pictures unless you found him sunning himself at uh at Lake Travis or he's uh sipping a coffee somewhere at one of these coffee houses here on on Capital Boulevard so I think that's where you are with Seth where you try to fix and maybe Adam Gold could answer this question a lot better and he probably will uh at noon today to fix the Jordan Stall Jordan martinook tandem you can go a number of different ways but it would require some trust and I think that's that's the one thing that has to happen with Jordan Stall and that line is that he needs to have people that he can trust on that line he's got options there's no doubt about it whether they're options that he's like Felix youngor right now right he seems to be the favorite the hyphenated guy uh has to get up to speed so the the thought is he's going to start in Chicago unless something magical happens and Rod brymore loved him last year at last year's camp but he went back overseas to play he's going to be here in the states I'm not sure he's going to need an adjustment to the speed of the NHL if he plays on a Jordan Stall Jordan martinook line he's got two veteran guys that'll play with him and that's not exactly the fastest line out there that the Carolina Hurricanes run out there let's just be honest with ourselves but boy would he in some uh some youth to that line much like Seth Jarvis did last season yeah I think that would be a good option for them I think it'd be a great option but they have other they do have other options there's a Jackson Blake that's floating out there Brendan lemie just been sitting around and the team loves him right locker room guy everybody loves him he resigned for one season why not give him the run with that line except you've got all left-handed shooters that would be the only thing they have options they have options as the Carolina Hurricanes have options but the that's that's tough news for a yes for fos and I think that's the one thing that keeps you know more left-handers from joining that line is they're all left-handed so you go to look at a Bradley Deo but you are talking about youth this is clear youth that's coming in 18 19 20 year 20 year olds that would line up with that group now maybe it's a jack rosovich too but that certainly is a wide openen door for someone to break in and grab some substantial minutes on this team that needs to have some other threat on the ice besides AO fetch nikof Marty NES Seth Jarvis I think it does open Marty NES a little bit more I'm not sure if it's creates more opportunity but maybe it creates more I don't know more trust more ideas to work within this system I don't see him being placed with that line again I'm not sure Adam Gold would see him being placed with that line either but there are some options but tough news for f tough news for you Carolina Hurricanes fans
