Drake Maye weekend series starting Friday. It's the Eagles and Pats and the place formerly known as Titletown, but good news Lombardi's don't luster. Some good news may be on the way in the form of Drake Maye, the third overall pick, entered the game in the second quarter. Larger sample size than just the one series in the first preseason game. First drive on third and five. Drives one across the middle. Some of the signs you're looking for finds Javon Baker. Pats would get a 51 yard field goal out of it. Final two minutes of the first half. Maye keeping it. Either get in or get down. This time it's the former six points. Maye touches paint for the first time as a Patriot. Pats up ten three at the half. Did have 16 collegiate rushing touchdowns in his career, but more known for this Uncorking the deep ball to Baker. Can't haul it in. Maybe you keep running just out of reach. Mays final drive of the game steps up in the pocket, but doesn't feel that quick pressure from the blind side and takes a lick. Took a couple throughout this game, but he's a big fella. Eagles go on to win this 114 to 13. Still plenty reasons to smile for Drake Maye. The young man who will in the years to come perhaps turn this franchise back in that direction that we know them for Maye four drives six of 1147 yards through the air, 15 more on the ground. And Tyler Soans thoughts on Maye that rushing touchdown. You saw. CBS sports NFL writer Tyler Donovan joining us with his thoughts. It's great to see you as always. It's always great when we're chopping it up about your pats. Those same banners they hang they hang in Tyler's home. Tyler talk to me about Drake Maye right now where you're at just this sample size, assess the four drives that you saw, some of what you liked and maybe some of the habits that need to be worn on out of the game. Yeah. Overall very encouraging right. Because you were coming off of a preseason game where he played one series and was immediately faced with like a second and 12, second and ten. So we really didn't get to see Drake Maye all too much. And even going into the joint practice on Wednesday, very excited to see him there. But the offensive line was failing him. So we really haven't seen him in this type of competitive setting and what we've seen so far, the things that we thought we were going to see. When he was billed as the number three overall pick, you showed the highlight earlier, the deep ball to Javon Baker obviously was an incomplete pass, but you are seeing that raw ability from him that we saw at UNC on full display here. Obviously there were some things that were still a little shaky. I thought he had a couple of throws that were a little bit too high in this game. There were some of them that just kind of went out right out in front of his intended receiver. So those things he needs to clean up. But overall, I thought he had some nice poise. We talk about the rushing touchdown that he had in the first half. But I thought the play I think it was 1 or 2 prior to that. It was a screen pass to Jamycal hasty. Nakobe Dean was untouched, rocketing towards him and I didn't think he was fazed whatsoever. Kind of just changed his arm slot, threw it to Jamycal hasty and he was able to get them within that scoring Max Kellerman thoughts on Maye distance. So overall a very good performance by Drake. Maye is still a little lumps, but overall it was a passing grade for sure. Yeah, took a couple lumps too. You got to see him out in the open field avoiding some of that contact. Maybe a cautionary tale told last season by Anthony Richardson. It's great. You're big. You're stron. You can withstand some of those hits. But in this league they do add up and they add up quickly. We'll see what may looks like on that depth chart. Not expected to be the week one starter with Jacoby Brissett their only offer that to ask you what is the value and when is the right time. Because we've seen time and again before the situation dictates success or failure in instances when players aren't surrounded by the proper talent, a la may the season. Yeah. It's weird. I almost feel like you have to be steadfast in one camp or the other. It's either you draft the guy in the first round, you have to play him in week one, you have to let him get those reps early on or you're in the camp of, well, there's some nuance to that because you also don't want to break the kid's confidence. You don't want to have him have bad habits. And I fall into that portion specifically as it relates to Drake Maye with this New England Patriots team, right now, if he was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings and he has Justin Jefferson an all pro you know offensive tackles along the offensive line, then sure throw him out there week one. That's fine. This is not that team. There are still a lot of holes that this New England Patriots team has. There's a reason why their win total is four and a half. And specifically it's the offensive line. You saw it tonight. There were some warts with this team when it was Jacoby Brissett under center. He even kind of looked hobbled for a moment there when he took a big hit in the first half. But Drake may also playing in front of the first team offensive line. There were some issues there very low has been earmarked as their left tackle. All summer really. And he was the left tackle in this one tonight for both Brissett and Drake. Maye And both of those quarterbacks took licks and it just doesn't feel like they have that figured out right now. You even choose a corner on the right side. Doesn't feel like it's anything substantial in terms of protecting the quarterback. Whether it's you know Milton Zappy Maye or Brissett. It feels like every quarterback is under siege there. So until they figure that out they should not play. Drake Maye right now I just only think that you're exposing that kid to injuries. You're exposing him to bad habits. At least with Brissett he is a veteran. He is able to withstand that. He knows Kenny Golladays new lease on life what's coming. You don't want to introduce Maye in that type of a setting in my estimation. All right. Let's use shoddy offensive line play as our through line to bad habits formed by a then young quarterback in Kenny Pickett who now has a new lease on life. Yes it is a demotion in role, but how can this change of scenery? We saw some of it here breathe new life into Kenny Pickett's career and what he could maybe be down the line. Yeah, the pressure is off, right? I mean, he's not unseating Jalen Hurts anytime soon in Philadelphia. It's not like he's in a quarterback battle with Russell Wilson in Justin Fields in Pittsburgh. But I do think that he might be in a little bit of a quarterback battle. I know that, you know, he was obviously under siege against a first team defense with the New England Patriots four sacks on the night and overall was pretty efficient. I believe he was 11 to 13. But it wasn't like he was prolific. And I believe a lot of those throws the air yards were I think under one, under two. It was not like it was throwing it all over the yard. Tanner McKee came in and again, it's lesser competition as this game goes o. But I thought that he played particularly well. So as much as we're talking about Kenny Pickett is playing well. You know he's got a new lease on life. He's in Philly. It's not like he has the pressure to be QB1 anymore. I would worry about him being QB two, QB two. I thought Tanner McKee actually played well tonight. All jobs are earned and it's that time of season. He does currently sit at that QB two spot on the depth chart, but as we know over the next three weeks, subject to change. Tyler Sullivan, we appreciate you stopping by as always here on HQ.
