My First Sunday Crossword (for this channel, not ever) NYT 1/21/24

hello and welcome to puzzles Anonymous my name is Kevin and I'm a puzzle addict and I am possibly doing a Sunday today uh we'll see if this gets published and I'll tell you why of course first off I only publish videos that I finish but I also want to keep these at a reasonable length uh even though I'm pretty sure it's just like two people watching this and there people that you know know me and don't have a problem hearing me talk but I still you know I don't want to do a 2our video and talking about the crosswords as I solve them does take long than just solving them for example I'll show you my stats this is a cool thing the New York Times does where it'll take by the day show you you know your average what you did this week you can see this Monday was wild because I was explaining in a video and your best time um you can kind of see it just in general like you know we got averages of 30 averages of 30 again my average for a Sunday is 49 and if you consider that on Mondays where my average is$ 750 6 and this week for the video it took 25 minutes you can see how I kind of take longer doing these videos than I do if I'm just solving for myself um these average times kind of don't really reflect my current solve time like if you look at a Saturday the best I've done is 1201 that's like way faster than my average because the average a lot of it reflects how I was year ago when I started regularly doing the crosswords I'm a lot faster now but I'm still slower when I'm talking to y'all so we'll try our hand at this Sunday January 21st John westwig W if you saw it you know that I solved it but there's no promise of that so yeah I mentioned before Sundays are themed ones they uh are not necessarily more difficult than any other day of the week they are just like bigger more stretched out as you can see this normally it's 15 X5 I believe this is 21 by 21 let's see there's 18 numbers going across and three black space so yes that's 21 squares I will assume that this is square I'm not going to count the down um so yeah 21 by 21 it's bigger probably difficulty level of the theme and the clues is going be closer to like a Wednesday and then they also have a more um diverse set of Clues I've talked before about how a lot of times a cross puzzle will reflect the author's personality and interest that's also true about Sunday but they try to mix up the topics and mix up the clues so that if you're sitting around with your family doing a cross word you can you know when there's a car one you can ask your dad that's who I would ask when there's you know something about art history you would ask your sister you know as it goes um so yeah we'll get into it this is a fun grid with this diagonal going down the middle I'm interested to see what happens there but we will start as we always do with trying to get the theme I'm guessing this is the theme oh wait I missed an important part this one has a title funny business so often times when there's a title that will be the revealer there might also be a revealer clue in here but I don't think there is I think there's going to be these five long phrases six long phrases 1 two three four five six they're all going to relate to this theme of funny business and I doubt we're going to figure it out on the first look but let's give it a try first I found an aerospaced startup but I never yeah I think I do it on this I think this just setups some punch lines got it off the ground is way I was going to say it's way too short but that's the exact amount of letters so yeah okay it's going to be this is actually a joke format was popular on Twitter a while ago where it's like I have a joke about Rockets but such and such same thing I founded an aerospace startup but I never got it off the ground you get that joke okay when that fell through I tried my hand at fish mongering but we it's an idiom about failure that has to do with selling fish couldn't land it like you land a fish couldn't land it couldn't hook it would be the same amount of letters we never got a bite any bites never got a bite didn't get any bites would be the same as what I already did so it's something about getting bites I think but I can't figure out like the verb and um number combination next I pivot into the breakfast restaurants but competitors got to break a few eggs to make an omelette um comp so this is something the competitors did to make their business fail this pancake dust is too short um scrambled the I don't know but at least it's bounced around my mind grapes when I tried candle making all my workers wax soy melted smelled something going wrong it's so humbling when I get the First theme clue and then none of the others I decid to try who and when I forget how to talk I decided to try operating an airport but just before launch we had the wheels come off that would be more of a bus type thing uh finally I decided to buy a grocery store on intersection put a rival
