this is breaking news on KETV Newswatch 7 and ketv.com from Orlando all the way to Nebraska's Capital City Scott Frost and his staff Landon Lincoln overnight now 12 hours later he's about to be formally introduced as the next Husker football head coach good afternoon noon everyone I'm David Earl joined by Thor Tripp here in the studio Thor this has been in the works for a while an emotional process by all accounts and now we are about to hear from Scott Frost himself yeah the former Husker quarterback named Saturday is the 30th full-time head coach in Husker football history Frost the fifth head coach says Tom Osborne retired at the end of the 1997 season University of Nebraska Lincoln Athletics director Bill moose is about to hold a news conference there where we will also hear from Scott Frost but Thor some of the highlights here on this this is the longest contract that the Huskers have ever offered yes seven years 35 million dollars he'll be the third highest paid coach in the Big Ten Conference but timed Urban Meyer Jim Harbaugh so some big names obviously and now Scott Frost trying to become one of those names but it's not just for us you've got assistant coaches at UCF who also have Husker ties Barrett root comes to mind could be the linebackers coach for Nebraska as well and a couple other Nebraska natives that played for the Huskers that could be back on staff here again and while this process has been in the works for a while um it really kind of all came together quickly once uh the athletic director Bill moose decided to fire Mike Riley yeah and I think it was probably in the works a little bit before you know the actual uh process came to fruition for Nebraska here's a look at Scott Frost this morning in the wee hours in Lincoln uh getting to his hotel giving everybody hugs obviously fired up to be here this was about 1am this morning so a long night for these coaches after winning the AAC Championship down in Orlando at Spectrum Stadium then making his way up to Memorial Stadium and you get a look at him walking into the shot here at Memorial Stadium this morning a little before 8 A.M Frost there on the far right walking into the place of his former glory so this staff has been a long night but it's been a fun night and we certainly have plenty to look forward to from there yeah what the feelings that Scott Frost must have in that moment right walking into the stadium where he made such a name for himself as a as a quarterback and now leading the program there that's got to be pretty cool yeah you saw him kind of looking up at the stadium and making sure everything was still kind of as he remembered it and he's been back but it's also pretty cool to be there walking in as the head coach we also have the celebration video from frost yesterday in Orlando which was pretty exciting stuff you saw the emotion and a lot of the Husker football players commented on the passion that Frost had with his team and and the Positive Vibes his team even sent out after talking to frost and realizing that he would be the next head coach at Nebraska it was really exciting to see what Frost was able to do in Orlando with this UCF team turning an 0-12 team two years ago into a 12-0 team this morning last night and this season just one of the best college football turnarounds in history one thing that was really interesting we talked to some of the players this morning as they were coming out of their meeting with Bill moose and Scott Frost and getting a chance to kind of chat with them it was really interesting to hear some of their thoughts as well as this team kind of moves forward into the next era yeah when you look at the video I think everybody's really excited uh um that he's here and I'm just really looking forward to getting to work and I think he was too so that was uh good to see I mean kind of felt like something was going to happen and I mean when the when the news got announced I was like okay so like it's time to get to work so they're definitely excited we should pick me up it was pretty cool it was pretty nice I seen him you know I like the passion he had with his teammates and you know like the love he had with CMAs was real nice I feel like everybody is you know everybody has the same attitude he kind of has like you know everybody wants to be a energetic team that fun team that was one of the big things that we definitely want to do just have as much fun playing this game as possible and I feel like and we all feel like he's the coach Joe help us do that foreign interesting to hear from those players in their perspective this is a live look inside Memorial Stadium right now we have several Crews there awaiting this news conference it should start around noon with Husker athletic director Bill moose and then the new Husker head football coach Scott Frost you can see some folks getting off the elevator there ahead of the news conference Thor we know Nancy and Tom Osborne are going to be in the room today and that's important because they especially coach has had such an impact on Scott Frost over the course of his life yeah when you look at getting into the same field as your Mentor obviously you're going to consult Osborne quite a bit as Scott Frost has throughout his career Osborne declined comment yesterday but obviously today after getting to see him in person we'll get a chance to really hear his thoughts on how far Scott has progressed in his career and if you're not familiar with Frost's bio here's a look at what he's done over the course of that career he's 42 years old he spent the last two years as head coach for the University of Central Florida his record there 18-7 he went undefeated in the 2017 season winning the AAC Championship Saturday afternoon As Husker quarterback Frost LED Nebraska to the 1997 National Championship the Huskers defeated Tennessee That season quarterbacked by Peyton Manning to win the Orange Bowl and the national title Frost transferred to Nebraska from Stanford where he played in 1993 and 1994 he was the first Husker quarterback in school history to run for 1 000 yards and pass for 1 000 yards in the same season now that's one thing that we'll look for out of the next Husker quarterback as for frost pro career he was a third round draft pick of the New York Jets in 1988 played six seasons in the NFL with New York Cleveland Green Bay and Tampa Bay as well Frost starting as professional coaching career in Northern Iowa in 2007 first as linebackers coach then co-defensive coordinator and from there he went on to Oregon as an assistant coach 2013 he was the Ducks offensive coordinator Under head coach Chip Kelly for us helping lead Oregon to the national title game game in 2011 and 2015. yeah Frost is a native of Wood River Nebraska his father Larry played half back for Nebraska in the late 1960s he's a long time educator and school superintendent and he's coached hundreds of kids his mother Carol's the first Nebraska woman to compete for a U.S Olympic team Carol Frost was Nebraska's women's track and cross-country coach from 1997 to 1980. so the Huskers run in the family yeah to say the least yeah we've kind of mentioned this as a a little bit of a homecoming for him you see a lot of players from Nebraska current and former players that have really started to file into the room here as we still await Scott Frost here's a look at Frost at Central Florida this is a program offensively that led the country in scoring this season and certainly did the same thing yesterday in that contest 62 points they racked up 726 yards of offense and really when you look at the development of frost coaching career that's been a big part of the reason why he was the top Target for Nebraska in this search and Thor can you talk a little bit about just the dramatic turnaround that UCF experienced under Scott Frost I mean that that really comes down to coaching right I mean because you're working with other people's recruits in those two years um really an impressive showing by Scott Frost and his ability and it was and it obviously gives you an a idea of the extent of the plan that they have coming in which is something that you've already seen at Nebraska just last night five players were offered scholarships by the Huskers to be a part of this starting new you know with this program and you kind of got a hint as to who some of the assistant coaches could be under this new staff with Scott Frost which we'll hear a lot more about during the press conference coming up here but that's one interesting his staff was able to carefully coordinate a recruiting plan last night addressing some big needs with pass rushers and cornerbacks and even a quarterback as well a lot of three four star kind of players who have been recruited at UCF but they also this staff wants to try and recruit them to Nebraska as well and another part of that is that some of those players are committed but to programs who are also in turmoil just as Nebraska was in the last week or so so you've got players who are committed to a program but not necessarily the coach that they originally intended to play for and Frost and Company obviously hoping that some of those players will make their way to Lincoln momentum is key right now right and this is really kind of building on the momentum with the announcement of this higher and getting right out on the recruiting Trail and making these things happen and I think you heard that when you listen to what the players had to say as well when we talked to them this morning and that sound bite that we showed you earlier this morning the the excitement level is is high you don't always have that that same kind of smooth transition that we've seen this time when bold pollini was fired and Mike Riley was hired the smooth transition is not something that you saw by any stretch of the imagination and now coming from Mike Riley's staff into Scott Frost and what his staff will start to look like you get an idea of how smooth that transition can be just listening to the players and and seeing the smiles and and the excitement level because you had some players uh who have seen Frost and his reaction yesterday in the way that he was with his staff and and those players and and maybe some of those guys who are thinking about transferring uh thinking about maybe jumping to the NFL when you look at a Stanley Morgan or a Tanner Lee maybe those guys reconsider and they they kind of give it another shot in college see if there's a way they can go out as a winner in Lincoln and really finish their careers off the right way I want to show you another live view inside Memorial Stadium right now as uh as folks get off the elevators there there's Bill moose and Scott Frost who you see on the right of your screen Bill moose on the left of your screen as they're getting ready for this introductory news conference at Memorial Stadium uh Scott Frost to be the new Husker head coach there as as we get ready to watch them go to the podium Thor and and make their come comments this really has been a master class in how to be an athletic director that bill moose has put on here and how to handle the the turmoil and and go forward and that was the big thing is he sticked with his word he said he wasn't going to fire a rally until after the season he hung on was able to deliver on that promise and now Nebraska and Husker fans alike can unite once again in Lincoln at Memorial Stadium as Scott Frost takes to the podium for his press conference as new Huskers head coach thank you okay seems like we've been doing this a lot lately um but uh this is this is fun this is a celebration uh for several reasons but I want to offer some thanks first to some people very instrumental in in getting this all accomplished um president bounds Chancellor Greene coach Osborne where are you very big in this and that I'll talk about a little bit later TurnKey search and my good friend Jean D Filippo and of course my staff did a fabulous job and continued to do this great job as we go through the process as I mentioned this is a celebration it's a celebration for the University of Nebraska and for Husker football certainly a celebration of bringing one of our own home a favorite son but I need to tell you this if I were the athletic director at Missouri or Oklahoma State or UCLA my sites would have been on this guy doesn't doesn't matter that I'm at Nebraska he is in my opinion not only the premier young coach in America I believe he was everybody's first choice and I got the pick of the litter we got the picture [Applause] and I need to tell you that when we went into the weight room and uh Scott didn't know that uh the football letter Letterman were going to be in there and there were over a hundred it looked like there were 200. that choked me up and uh we're going to have a lot of fun we're going to build this program back and it gives me a great deal of pleasure at this time to introduce the 30th head football coach at the University of Nebraska Scott Frost [Applause] thank you Bill it's an honor for me to be here I can't tell you how special this is for a kid that grew up and in Nebraska basically grew up on this campus when Mom was a track and field coach here and I was running around getting trouble and getting run over on the devaney center track um from there to playing here to be in other places coaching for as long as I have to to get an opportunity to come back here is special to me um words can't put words can't describe how much it means to me to be back here in a place that I love a place that I understand a place that I want to represent I want to thank coach Osborne for all he's done for me thank Matt Davidson for helping make this happen I want to thank Ronnie and Hank and Bill for choosing me and and believing in me to lead this program my sincere thank you to all you former players that showed up my friends that showed up in the weight room to welcome me my first thought when I walked in was this is unbelievable and my second thought was most of these guys have been eating too much I'm thrilled to be back because I think the time is right for this and it wasn't always that way but with Hank and Ronnie and Bill I think the leadership is right I think the time is right I think the state is hungry for Unity uh when I was here under coach Osborne um there is unity of purpose and unity of belief and unity of understanding and unity of support for this program what it stood for and what it was accomplishing this program needs that again this state needs that again and and when I walked into that weight room and saw all those players there really made me excited about the fact that we can get this entire State behind this football program get this entire State pulling for these players get this entire State excited about what's going on and and we're going to put a product on the field that this entire State can be proud of it's going to take a lot of hard work it's going to take a lot of dedication from a lot of people but there was a formula that worked here for a long time and times have changed a little but some of those same same things are what is going to make this work again and that's a lot of good people that care about this place working really hard it's toughness it's dedication it's work ethic that's what Nebraska is that's what the people of Nebraska are and that's what this place is going to stand for while I'm here so thank you [Applause] so uh probably be a question or two yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah hi Scott welcome home Ross jernstrom from wwt in Omaha coach Osborne what kind of influence did he have on your decision to come back to Nebraska uh coach has been a mentor to me my whole life and uh he was definitely played a part in this what I respect about him the most in this process is that I think if he wanted to believe this was the right time or the right place for me he would have told me even though he probably would have liked to have me back if those things weren't all taken care of and and this wasn't the place that he thought I should be wouldn't have told me to come and it was still a hard decision but I think coach felt good about like I said the leadership here and and the direction and that made me a lot more comfortable with taking this job hey Scott welcome back why is the time right to come back and what message did you give to the players earlier today I had a good meeting with the team I saw a lot of fire in in their eyes as I saw a group that was excited um I let them know that there's going to be a lot of hard work to be done that things are going to change a lot of things are going to change but it's going to be a really fun process I've seen it happen before and I know it can happen here they looked excited a lot of them came to the coach to my office afterwards my new office afterwards and and I talked to him individually I told them to go home over Christmas and enjoy the time off but I want them to come back ready to go to work it's got Eric Olsen with the Associated Press obviously your return has gotten a lot of build up over the weeks could you just address just the extra layer of pressure that may be placed on you just because of the expectations here and your status is a kind of a Native Son hmm you know I played here I understand it I saw the best of this place I also saw some hard times that maybe other people hadn't but that's what makes this place great is the passion that the people here have for it um watching it from afar I'm not sure that that passion was unified that that passion was always completely supportive it's my hope that by returning this to its roots and maybe with me coming back that we can get that passion all pointed in the right direction when when that happens at Nebraska this is the best place in the country to be and I hope I can bring that to this place hey Scott Sean Callahan here from Oscar online can you just describe the emotions of the last month you're having your first child going 12-0 winning a conference title and then lastly this opportunity you've got here with your your dream job at Nebraska and then it's capped all off by you asking me a question that makes sense um 2017 has been one of the best years of my life having a child my first child at my Advanced age is the best thing that's ever happened to me I coached a really special group of players down in Florida this last year and we had a unbelievable season I'm looking forward to doing that here the staff that I'm going to bring in here is going to be a bunch of guys that these players will love a bunch of guys that have tremendous character they're going to care about these guys that's gonna that are going to Mentor them and teach them and help them be better on and off the field I'm looking forward to that and I don't know if I'll ever ever have another year as good as 2017 but we're going to work really hard to make that happen Scott their chat with Omaha World Herald you uh you were probably considered for this job two or three years ago or at least considered coming back in your own mind how are you more prepared now than you were then and what specifically at UCF you know helped you prepare for this that's a multi-layered question um I wasn't considered for this job last time it came open and I'm glad I wasn't I didn't get a phone call last time this job was open I'm glad I didn't the the pieces are in place now I believe a lot in bill I believe in in Hank and Ronnie and I think this state is ready to see this place uh return to to what it was and like I said that doesn't mean we're going to win every football game but I want to I want this program to be something that the people this state can get behind and be proud of that these former players can be a part of and be proud of and we all know what goes into that the guys that played here it's toughness it's pursuit of Excellence it's Unity um those are the type of things that that Nebraska stood for when we all played here and that's going to happen again hey Scott Brian Christopherson with Nebraska 24 7. um what what do you see as just kind of the challenges of the next few weeks with the early signing date and and the pressure of that yeah I think they've done a pretty good job recruiting here we took a look at what what they have committed and we're excited about that um the early signing period is is going to change a lot of things particularly for coaches who are going from one job to another we're going to have to get to work we already have boots on the ground um getting out to see recruits and and letting them know where we are and who's going to be here uh the the response already has been tremendous and I think even with a short amount of time here we're going to be able to get a lot of things done Scott you know the walk-on tradition here at the University of Nebraska and what's your message to the young men who are in high school right now sophomores Juniors and those seniors who will be graduating what's your message for them for the walk-on tradition that's one of the things I talked to Bill about and Coach Osborne about when we were here we had a lot of players and a lot of players were working hard at practice and nobody was sitting on a knee and we had a lot of kids from Gothenburg and from Minden and from Scottsbluff I'm from Wood River and from Columbus and can go on and on but this place needs that I'm looking forward to trying to grow the walk-on program and make it what it was before there's going to be some some sacrifices that have to be made probably to get it there but when you have a bunch of kids from the state of Nebraska that are in this program those are the type of players that would would bleed for this place and are going to work hard to make this work uh guys that are really pulling from Nebraska and when I was growing up every kid in the state of Nebraska dreamed about running out here on this Stadium on this field wearing a red end on their helmet there's too many kids from this state right now playing at other schools and and we're going to do everything we can to make sure that those kids are here no I know you're busy with your own thanks Scott but how closely did you still keep a watch on Nebraska football and how much did it pain you to see the struggles they've had when you're coaching you're pretty busy with your own team but I was able to watch this from afar and it from afar it didn't look like the Nebraska that I knew I haven't been in this building to see all these changes this place is spectacular they've done an unbelievable job with these facilities I think I say the time is right because everything is set up here for us to to do what we have to do to get this place back and I know with the support of all the people in this state and all the former players and the leadership on this University I know we can get it done thank you Scott Lee barfnik from World Herald when and where were you offered this job and when and where were you when you accepted this job this was a hard process for me because it it's unbelievable the timing of having to make these decisions um the interest starts coming above Midway through the season and I was busy coaching a football team and I care about my players and the last thing I was going to do was let that process distract me from helping my team win games I was loyal to that and didn't give it much thought until the very end of the season and then the decision had to be made obviously I was always very interested in this job I've talked to Bill I think the last week of the Season or second last week of the season for the first time didn't make a decision to come here until this past week and wanted to do everything I could to honor my players at UCF and make sure that I was giving them 100 of my effort and it worked out really well but I'm glad I made this decision and looking forward to the future Scott can you lay out kind of the plan for the bowl game at UCF I know Danny White kind of talked about that a little bit yesterday but what will be the plan with UCF and their bowl game for you and the coaches that will be following you here at Nebraska I think we still have some talking to do as far as it relates to the Bowl game down there we're looking forward to recruiting for the next couple weeks until the Dead period I don't want to leave the players down there without a coach and they deserve to have the best chance they possibly can especially in the bowl game that they qualified for so if it all works out I'd love to go back and and help those kids one more time um it's a unique and special group down there that that we all feel very strongly about it coincides with recruiting so hopefully we can get some recruiting done and get back down there if it all works out and help and then get back on the road up here yeah Scott do you have any um assistance already in place uh and and can you can you name any of those guys at this time yeah I'm going to take a little time to to name those guys but I will tell you that the staff I hired at UCF uh is a group of men that are unbelievable coaches and have unbelievable character and if it wasn't that way we wouldn't have been able to make the turnaround that we made um a lot of coaches when they get a bigger job or change from one school to another think they need to go out and hire some different people the guys that helped us win there can help us win here and I expect the majority of them to join me Scott how will you modify your system for the Big Ten I'm gonna I'm hoping the Big Ten has to modify their system for us [Applause] Scott Scott Steve Sipple from a Lincoln Journal Star hi um you you think one of the first people you thanked was Matt what role did Matt Davison play in getting you here how important was he in this process for you uh I'll give you a simple quote Matt's role was pestering me until I agreed to come here hey thanks hey Bill um can you talk about that first meeting with Scott now and just what what you took away from it the whole experience well I felt that I needed to have a face-to-face visit with Scott before I would offer him the job I did have various conduits that were getting my message to him and one was just mentioned in the last question and and Matt did a great job for us and you can tell he's a he's a Husker through and through and really appreciated his help but um we worked it out and I I to be quite honest having been around this business for a long long time and I had a I had and continue to have a lot of appreciation to keep distractions at a minimum for Scott who if you haven't caught that of this the only undefeated major college football team this season and I didn't want to be the one to disrupt that but it's at the same time I felt I I needed to see him I was willing to fly to Orlando and work it out with his schedule but Matt really worked this out for us to meet where's my in Philadelphia there were more than sandwiches in Philadelphia but both were real good and uh and had an opportunity to sit down with Scott and uh Matt was in the room and actually my wife Kendra was there she gives a tough interview and it was very it was casual and there were no notes there was it was just I wanted to get to know this guy and I felt that maybe he wanted to get a feel for me too and it wasn't long probably maybe an hour or so maybe a little longer than that and then we continued on up to uh uh play Penn State and Scott had Temple the next day you know Mitch Sherman espn.com Scott in light of what bill just said can you characterize your emotions uh heading into that meeting in Philadelphia how you felt during the meeting and and also how you felt after yeah like I said before my number one priority during that whole process was my team and so I didn't want to let it distract me um we made sure and got our work done that week and I knew a decision was was was coming soon so I needed to at least sit down with somebody um bill was nice enough to come up there and after we got everything done on Friday night we spent a little bit of time together I didn't need to know a lot about this program um I'm from here I get it I know what it's all about I know what it could be I know what the potential is so it just took me being comfortable with the leadership here and and the timing and it was a hard decision for me because some of the players I was coaching down there are special to me we built something special at UCF when it came down to it this is home and I can't think anything more rewarding in my career than turning this place around and that's our goal in our aim Scott other side um Parker Gabriel from the Lincoln Journal Star as you with finals coming up and then winter break with the current guys how do you start to get into meeting with them evaluating sort of what what you have here and balancing that with being on the road recruiting yeah I had a meeting with the team today got to meet someone for the first time a bunch of them came into my office to to say hello and shake my hand I told these guys they need to go home and enjoy Christmas and a lot of things are going to change and when they get back I want them to be refreshed and ready to go to work we got a lot of work to do we got a lot of ground to cover there's going to have to be a lot of shared experiences before we can earn trust with one another but we're going to work harder than everybody else that's what Nebraska is about and we're going to be a more United Team than anybody else that's what Nebraska is about and we're going to work our tails off in the weight room and be stronger and more physical and tougher than other teams because that's what Nebraska is about a lot of these guys will jump on board and do those things maybe some won't but the ones that will are going to enjoy the ride we're going to have a lot of fun and we're going to take this place back to where it needs to be hey Scott what's your number one worry coming into this job sitting in these chairs right here I don't have a worry because I know we are going to do things the right way we're going to do things in a way that the people of Nebraska going to be proud of we're not going to win every game that I coach here and we're gonna we're gonna lose a few and we we might make some mistakes but I know that the people are going to be able to get behind what we're doing here because we're going to do everything the right way we're going to do everything with the right moral compass and we're going to do everything in a way that's going to make Nebraska proud it's got me besides Matt and just some old teammates maybe tugging at you how much of a sense did you get of just how much the entire State the last month was kind of all about Scott Frost and wanting to see you come home I was busy coaching a team so I heard things I saw a couple of corny videos on YouTube maybe uh people here are passionate and nobody knows that better than me and we're looking forward to tapping into that the right way and watching this program from afar I don't think people have been unified in support behind something for a while the men that I'm going to hire here the players that we're going to have we're going to do it in a way that Nebraska people can get unified in behind it there's been a in my opinion a lack of unity of purpose about this place for a while and if I can bring that back that'll be really rewarding hey Scott Eric Olson again AP uh kind of playing off of what uh what Lee had said uh with regard to number one worry I mean just how would you describe the undertaking that you face here at Nebraska and was getting seven years on the contract crucial to kind of where you see the uh you know the necessity of having that amount of time no at the end of the day this is where I want to be there was interest from other places there's a big part of me that didn't want to move my baby after he was born a month ago and and my wife being happy but this is where we want to be and contract length is nice because it helps me to have confidence that they're going to give us the runway that we need to get this program off the ground and back to where it needs to be but at the end of the day none of that mattered because when I made a decision about what to do this is where I wanted to be and I wanted to be home and that's the decision we made we're going to go 100 miles an hour in full speed from here bill um why Scott the premier head coach in the country and why was he The Pick of the litter well there's several reasons and some of them he touched on here we all know that he has a passion for Nebraska and we know that is very very good football coach but he's got great integrity he's got great morals he cares about his players I mean you've heard him talking here and he just can't get back to the fact that he he genuinely cares about the players and all those things are important I said back I think when when I had my press conference the the style offense that I think will capture the attention of the Big Ten is the Chip Kelly Scott Frost offense and and you saw it if you didn't watch it last night I mean my Heavens it was a track meet and the options going in a quality quarterback in the tight ends and and a very good line play all of that is going to be very exciting for our fans and may I just say this to our fans uh you are the best in the country you've been patient I know you've been frustrated but I hope you're going to Rally around Scott and what he's going to do because uh we're going to keep that sellout record alive and we could probably hopefully one day add more seats and even expand it this this is a as I look at Scott's resume uh and you you have read it I'm gonna I'm gonna reiterate it uh he played on both sides of the ball he coached on both sides of the ball his uh mentors beginning with Coach Osborne and and through those of in the professional ranks and Chip Kelly himself um he was ready and I I'm I felt he was ready three years ago but now he's shown taking a program that was 0 and 12. and is now 12-0 um never been done before in major college football that's saying something so uh like I said there's a lot of names they're going around and then let me say this there there were others that really really wanted Scott and some prestigious programs and there were some prestigious coaches that really really wanted Nebraska but this is a fit and we talk about fit here and and uh and and it has substance you got to fit at Nebraska and I don't know of any better fit than than this gentleman on my left coach what's the difference between turning around a place like UCF in a place like Nebraska what's the difference I don't think there's much of a difference we need to make sure the culture's right we need to make sure the energy is right we need to get to work in the weight room and on the field we're going to practice hard and fast but I told the players today everything we're going to do it's going to be difficult but they're going to have more fun than they've ever had before once you get once you get that kind of unity and togetherness and you put in the work success inevitably follows listen we're going to go fast around here and practices are going to be fast and meetings are going to be fast it's gonna be a lot of fun and I can't wait to to start building some of the same things with people here that we've been able to do the last two years bill when you watch what's been going on on the coaching Carousel in college football how rare is it that it's been this easy when you've seen it be pretty hard this week for a lot of other teams across the landscape and college football to find a coach oh well first of all I've never I've never seen this this many top programs open up I mean these things tend to be cyclical uh but this this time around it uh it's been somewhat crazy and it still continues there's going to be more openings and there's going to be more movement um and that's why uh if you recall I said upon my arrival I wanted to look at all the options that that I had and started to look at some people that I thought would would work here very well and I never felt and I will reiterate that we needed to make a coaching change in the middle of the Season look at those places that did it they can't find a coach and some settled for their third choice uh all all of all my things were lined up and and as it got further along in the process Scott I knew Scott was the coach that I wanted and I had talked to a Chancellor and the president they were behind me 100 percent and I think really the fact that that we let Scott do his business and take care of of coaching his team and gave him that space was the right thing to do and here we are today so I feel very good about it foreign two quick questions um did you talk to any other candidates that were near the top of your list and talk about the need to have the salary be higher than it was previously again I uh I I had had people uh that that talked to other agents and other coaches I did have uh conversations with a couple I did not offer the job to anybody but Scott and uh Scott never asked for money I mean he he uh what you see is what you get what I felt that Scott wanted the most was enough time to get this done and get it done right and he's he's he like I believes there's no quick fixes we will build this this football program on solid footings and if we do stub our toe it's not going to be a house of cards and um I felt that we needed seven seven years and if I'm going to hire one of the Premier coaches in the country we're going to pay him a premier salary um and that's you know this is Nebraska this is as good as it gets and I think we got As Good As It Gets and we're going to compensate him properly Bill what was your what was your uh your level of comfort like after you met with Scott and how would you describe the way that you felt last week when it seemed to be all quiet uh from Nebraska as as things swirled you know out of control in some places nationally on the on the coaching search front how did you how did you feel as you were in your office last week knowing that this was hopefully for you coming to an end well first of all when I did talk to Scott in Philadelphia and we're sitting around the table in a in a suite uh he was very genuine and his concerns were with Merit about you know can Nebraska be the Nebraska it should be in the Nebraska it once was and we had that that was the the bulk of our conversation um and I I know I came away from that feeling very good about Scott Frost and I I think he came away from it feeling good about the commitment that we have at Nebraska to ensure that that happens um and then I left him alone I think I sent you one text to have a good week of preparation I don't expect you to remember it but I worked with my staff working with uh with some of an individual that Scott had and just to put the numbers together and really it was a a very simple process went went very very easy which is a really a credit to Scott and what what his morals are all about where where his head is Scott you talked a little bit about the last month but could you just walk us through what the emotions have been like the last 27 or 28 hours from kicking off in Orlando and through that game and winning a title and then obviously getting here yeah I haven't slept in a while I haven't eaten I haven't eaten much I haven't lifted weights or run in a little bit so I haven't gotten a haircut there's been a lot going on yesterday was emotional for me because I genuinely care about the the team I was coaching um it was an unbelievable Victory and then really difficult uh task to tell them goodbye um then I got on a plane and got up here we got in late last night what I'm most excited about is having having the same kind of impact on a group here and developing the same kind of relationships with a group here and leading the charge to make sure we can have the same kind of success here I know I'm going to put a staff in place that can do those things I want to run out of this tunnel again in front of a bunch of fans they're going to cheer for us and applaud the other team and all the things that I love about Nebraska and I'm looking forward to that but first i'm looking forward to getting a little sleep coach everybody so you've been listening to Scott Frost and Bill moose talk about the future of the Husker football program Frost the new head coach Bill moose hiring him within the past week that news conference happening at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln where we've got several Crews now working to gather some reaction in the room Thor your takeaway from what you heard Scott Frost say yeah Frost certainly is showcasing some of that dry humor that personality I think that we learned a little bit about the search process but there wasn't a whole lot to learn we kind of had an idea everybody was straightforward about it Bill moose kind of let everybody know cryptically I guess uh to some extent it was kind of funny he said there were more than sandwiches in Philadelphia when the Huskers were at Penn State and and frost was getting ready to play Temple so certainly been an interesting Journey for Husker fans to watch in the search process and it's been an interesting Journey for frost to get to this point through his playing career and now the head coach of Nebraska let's take a look back at his time going through the Cornhusker State to where he is now [Music] Scott Frost's football history starts in Wood River while finding success in multiple Sports his greatest abilities came out on the Gridiron all Nebraska all super State and All-American honors for his time as an eagle [Applause] one of the most sought after recruits of the 93 class Scott Frost chose Stanford playing quarterback in free safety while waiting for a chance to shine the opportunity would come but not on the northwest he was not happy at Stanford and he's happy now so we're real happy for him Frost transferred to Nebraska for his sophomore season sitting out a year before being named quarterback in 1996. Nebraska's incredible run continued with frost under center 24-2 with two Orange Bowl victories and a share of a national title I don't think anybody in the country runs the ball like Nebraska does and no team in the country will hit you for 60 minutes like Nebraska does following a five-year career as a safety and special teamer in the NFL Frost found coaching first as a grad assistant at Nebraska and Kansas State eventually leading the defense at Northern Iowa however it was his time at Oregon that cemented his reputation as a coach on the rise coaching receivers under Chip Kelly before assuming the offensive coordinator role for Mark helfrich two years of white hot scoring earned Frost his first head coaching opportunity Central Florida had just finished an 0-11 season now two years later Frost undefeated knights in the AAC Championship hosting the nation's best scoring offense every year in college football there's tough decisions to make and then those kind of things happen and when the time's right we'll make them now Nebraska's Native Son returns home hoping that in the deed Comes The Glory once again yeah Frost back on tap here in Lincoln it's been an interesting press conference today listening into him and we've got reaction uh from the press conference at Memorial Stadium with Matt Lothrop who's standing by live in Lincoln Matt hey thanks Thor it's been done here before it can be done here again that was how Scott Frost the the kind of the phrase he continued to hearken back to harkening back to not only his playing days but talking about really growing up inside the program if you remember his mom Carol Frost was the track coach for a few years when Scott was a kid a couple of Big Time points uh that he that he mentioned one of the biggest though is really how the next few weeks will play out obviously he uh agreed last night to coach UCF in the bowl game according to Danny White ucf's athletic director but he as well will be a part of this staff and it's a kind of a how is he going to play this out he's not exactly sure there's still some blueprints some stuff being hashed down because recruiting is going to be pretty big here in the next couple of weeks with December 20th it's early signing period other things that he kind of talked on was uh he said it's the time the time is right now for a comeback he said in fact he was not contacted three years ago with Nebraska's last coaching search when they went in fact with Mike Riley he said the time is right now the infrastructure is here he he really likes the direction Bill moose has for the football program yeah Matt when you think about what this program means to frost obviously impressive as you mentioned the timing he said that you know he wants this place that to be a place that people can be proud of the toughness the unity factors uh Matt what was your impression and your takeaway when you think about the message he was trying to communicate to those current players but also fans looks like that right now really the message he's trying to communicate the message he's trying to communicate to both players and fans is one really of unity and now joined by Big Red Zone Insider Sean Callan Unity seemed to be something he kind of hearkened on along with just uh growing up in the program and trying to restore this to the the program he grew up launching yeah Matt you know we've been in this room for press conferences a lot the last 15 years for coaching moves coaching hires and I feel like today this is the first time it feels like what it should feel like I I think there's been times where we've wanted to make ourselves feel like that's what it should feel like well today I I now know what that feeling is because I've never felt a room like I felt here today uh with at least 500 people in it former players State leaders everybody this just the the unity that this hire has brought to this state has been just incredible Sean have you ever seen I mean it was look around people are still kind of just lingering they want to kind of soak this in it's almost like there's not a bowl game but this is a bowl game celebration have you ever seen something like this in an announcement like this no I mean it's it's rare that it goes number one like the way you want it to and for Nebraska this has gone 100 percent a plan obviously they didn't want to go four and eight this year but just the process of the meeting with frost giving him his distance and then him finishing 12-0 then accepting the job after the game I mean you really couldn't have scripted the week any better and that's a credit to the leadership of Nebraska of Ronnie green Hank bounds and athletic director Bill moose I think Matt Davison deserves a big hat tip in this process as he was the mediator of the meeting in Philadelphia Nebraska basketball played in New York Davison made the ride over to Philadelphia to set up the meeting the next day when Frost was there for a game the following day while Nebraska was at Penn State so it really has gone about as smooth as it really anyone can imagine all right uh uh touch on is staff at Nebraska right now he says he's got some guys in mind a majority of the staff from UCF will join him however he is going to take his time to name those names reporting with Sean Callahan a big big red zone Insider Sean Callahan of huskeronline.com I'm Matt Lothrop KETV Newswatch 7 Sports all right Matt Sean thank you very much they're both live in Lincoln at Memorial Stadium uh Thor one of the things Bill moose said here today is that we got the pick of the litter uh so what are your final thoughts here moving forward uh for Scott Frost as new Husker head coach yeah I think that was interesting when when moose was talking about you know we had other coaches that we were interested in but we also had other coaches who were interested in coming here and and moose said that whether he was at Nebraska whether he was at Missouri or whatever School Scott Frost was going to be the guy he was the pick of the litter as he mentioned so I think that's interesting and and one thing that Frost will have now is the pick of the litter in terms of assistant coaches but he did say that he'll bring a majority of his assistant coaches from Central Florida likely here to Lincoln and part of that is you know he talked about some coaches they'll get a bigger job and they'll bring a bunch of guys from different parts of the country that they're not familiar with and those guys don't have that chemistry and and can't maybe succeed at the level that that he's hoping to have so uh he's got guys that are comfortable that are comfortable with him and and vice versa so I think that'll be an interesting part and and obviously as he closed this press conference it's time to get some sleep he's had a busy uh a busy week couple weeks really with this process uh and going from there and I think now it's time to rest a little bit and then get back on the recruiting Trail and hopefully leave Nebraska back to where they want to be that coaching staff sure knows how to do a turnaround that's for sure Thor thank you we of course will have much more coverage for you from today's news conference coming up at 5 30 here on KETV and then at 10 o'clock in the meantime you can go to ketv.com and the mobile app for extended coverage for now back to regular programming foreign
