CTV National News | Thursday, June 27, 2024: Biden-Trump debate on CNN

Intro tonight face to face the historic first debate of the US presidential election Joe Biden and Donald Trump on the same stage I really don't know what he said at the end of that sentence I don't think he knows what he said either every single thing he said Is A Lie every single one the biggest night of the campaign so far A CTV News exclusive Canadian lawyers and allegations of moneya laundering not many lawyers start off as Crooks but some become Crooks also make model mileage how car thieves zero in on their targets they're doing anything and everything they can in order to locate those Vehicles plus indigenous identity theft prison time for a woman who claimed her children were innuit it there's a consequence to trying to take our identity and that sinking feeling oh my God Go the whole light post and everything the astonishing sinkhole that swallowed a soccer field something out of a movie it looks like a bomb went off CTV national news with Omar saaden good evening everyone the current BidenTrump debate president and the former one went head-to-head in a debate Showdown tonight the two men Joe Joe Biden 81 years old and Donald Trump 78 years of age making a pitch directly to Americans who will head to the polls in a little over 4 months and it did not take long for things to get personal when Biden claimed Trump disrespected veterans including his son Bo my son was not a loser was not a sucker you're the sucker you're the loser that was a madeup quote suckers and losers they made it up it was in a third rate magazine that's failing like many of these magazines uh he made that up he put it in commercials we've notified him we had 19 people that said I didn't say it and watching it all unfold in Atlanta ctv's Washington bureau chief joy malbin and joy they covered a lot of ground the economy the war in Ukraine and Gaza immigration and abortion but much of the post debate discussion tonight is centering on Biden's performance even Democrats are saying it lacked energy and could be problematic for the campaign Omar this format was not to Joe Biden his voice was raspy his campaign says he has a cold he stumbled a few times he seemed to lose his train of thought uh and and the headline in in Politico today was that Biden bombed this is not good at all now there were character attacks there were accusations of lying yes they even went there and talked about porn stars leving P personal attacks against one another there was no screaming and yelling but when Trump deflected on his role on January 6 the capital attack Biden called him out on his criminal convictions take a listen to this exchange the only person in this stage is a convicted felon is the man I'm looking at right now and the fact of the matter is he isn't he's what he's telling you is simply not true this man is a criminal this man you're lucky you're lucky I did nothing wrong we'd have a system that was rigged and disgusting I did nothing wrong yeah Trump responded calling Biden and his son criminal Biden said it was outrageous and went on to say how many billions of dollars are you paying to uh deal with your cases about molesting women in in public having sex with a porn star you have the morals of an alleycat but really tonight the question is all about Biden's performance he just seemed weak reinforcing what some American voters believe uh that he he it's it's not good Omar it's just not good the headline are very bad Democrats are panicking tonight and likely a lot more reaction overnight Joy Melvin in Atlanta tonight Joy thank you and back Money laundering in Canada in this country we have exclusive new details tonight on covering white collar crime CTV News working in collaboration with the investigative journalism Foundation obtained an unreleased report by Canada's Financial Watchdog showing lawyers helping criminals launder money ctv's Quebec bureau chief gen VF bosim explains the case of Ronald pelia marked their legal first in BC he laundered $31 million from clients he knew were under investigation for Securities fraud in the US he used 20 burner phones email aliases and collected $900,000 in legal feeds in 2023 he became the first lawyer topart in BC for knowingly participating in a money laundering scheme an intelligence report that doesn't name names suggests palche isn't the only Canadian lawyer linked to Dirty Money a collaboration between CTV News and the investigative journalism Foundation obtained documents by Canada's Financial Watchdog fintak it reveals 92 transactions flagged to fak over a three-year period deemed suspicious enough to be reported to police and national security agencies involved the legal profession and methods like shell companies that could be used by professional money laundering networks including biker gangs or drug cartels you know so if you're a trusted person you're in an ideal position to defraud Michael Levy is a Cardiff University Professor whose extensive research on money laundering is cited in the fin Trak report he says lawyers can be victims facilitators or primary offenders not many lawyers start off as Crooks um but some become Crooks lawyers legitimate duties can be exploited to launder money through real estate transaction actions luxury goods and cars but while Banks casinos and real estate brokers are required by federal law to report suspicious transactions to F Trak lawyers are exempt they argue this would violate solicitor client privilege it's up to their law societies to set up anti-money laundering rules and conduct investigations in a statement the Federation of law societies of Canada says it shares information with finance Canada and that law societies have powers and tools including the power to compel production of information protected by solicitor client privilege that far outrip those available to F Trak and law enforcement agencies but some experts and the financial action task force a coalition of countries combating moneya laundering have said This falls short and one of the things that they've pointed out repeatedly is that uh can Canada is out of sync with those standards because the lawyers aren't part of uh a a national system this has come into Focus as fighting moneya laundering which can fuel crimes like the drug trade or human trafficking is now at the center of international law enforcement priorities Jean via B CTV News Montreal we also Ontario car theft ring have new details tonight in our ongoing investigation on car thefts across Canada CTV News has learned thieves have been trying to access onario Ministry of Transportation records to help them steal ctv's Adrien gobrial has the details both the model of your vehicle and your home address are now sought after Black Market Commodities they're doing anything and everything they can in order to locate those Vehicles we have seen them try to access no records a shocking Revelation by po police that could include you know whether it be accessing checks through the Ministry of Transport really any opportunity they have to access information CDV news asked Ontario's Ministry of Transportation if criminal organizations have recently accessed the private details of vehicle owners they were unable to answer the question saying in an email that when it comes to their own staff everyone accessing personal information is subject to internal control measures and security screening checks as part of our ongoing auto theft investigation we recently spoke with this man named James who only gave his first name last week his Land Rover was stolen from his driveway this is happening at MTO there's a lot of things going on we've got to worry about there's a history of auto theft Rings infiltrating Ontario's government Ministries in December Toronto police investigator shared that some Service Ontario employees had allegedly sold the personal information of hundreds of drivers across the province including their home addresses to suspects said to be involved in an auto theft ring in Toronto dub project Safari 7 people in total were arrested including three Service Ontario employees in total 7 73 charges were laid it's a callous crime not lost on insurance companies who have their own investigators Now tracking the trends Ontario had over1 billion dollar worth of vehicle stolen uh which is a significant amount of money that's what organized crime is after they're after that lucrative Market police note that while in some cases they've been successful arresting individuals they say have been trying to steal information from the databases of Transportation agencies they feel they're really just scratching the surface of a much larger organized crime operation that stretches across the country and Beyond Adrian griel CTV News Toronto a possible long weekend strike WestJet strike averted at WestJet has been averted the federal government has ordered binding arbitration between the airline and the aircraft mechanics Union the two sides are expected to meet with the labor tribunal tomorrow but because WestJet had already started cancelling flights this week it's forced about 3,300 passengers to make alternate Arrangements a federal cabinet minister Harjit Sajjan rejects Globe report is rejecting a report about his alleged actions during the chaotic mission to get people out of Cabell as the Taliban took over nearly three years ago the globan mail citing military sources says then defense minister harit sjun intervened and instructed Canadian Special Forces to rescue a group of Afghan 6 with no link to Canada which took resources away from getting Canadian citizens and Afghans linked to Canada on Final evacuation flights sge disputed this today insisting he was only being asked about it because of his sick Faith let me address the the Globe article quite directly um because I'll be honest with you it was utter BS I didn't think I would be getting those questions if I wasn't wearing a turban Canadians and those who helped Canada like interpreters were the priority followed by vulnerable groups including religious minorities in a statement to CTV news sjun says he did not direct the Canadian Armed Forces to prioritize six above others the prime minister's Trudeau rallies support in Brampton priorities took a backseat today to a bruising byelection loss to the conservatives earlier this week the Liberals are trying to stay on message despite growing questions about Justin Trudeau's leadership ctv's Jeremy Chiron reports rallying support in Brampton tonight prime minister Justin Trudeau addressed the crowd at this open liberal fundraiser people are anxious and we saw that on Monday night in Toronto St Paul's where we didn't get the result we wanted but it reminded us that we have to fight every single day to break through the noise capping off a dayong liberal push which started with health Minister Mark Holland in Winnipeg promoting an expanding dental care plan we're so excited to say to families uh who uh who have children 18 and under and to persons with disabilities uh that service is now here for you thank you all for being here that same message on display in several cities across the country ministers focused on a team approach with a clear political purpose they're trying to do damage control by talking about something other than the defeat that they just realized but that defeat put them on the defense today I think it's an important moment to pause I think it's important to take stock everyone in caucus has a lot more work to do listening to to Canadians constituents including the Prime Minister I speak for uh Manitoba caucus that we are 100% uh support of the Prime Minister going forward the liberal team doubling down on supporting their prime minister amid new calls for his resignation I think it's time the Prime Minister step down I really do I think that it's you know what I'm hearing from liberals across the country is they're saying we want our party back a party that is struggling in the polls with just over a year before the next election internally there has to be some soul searching soul searching about the strategy soul searching about what the message is and the message of of change in order to engage Canadians and soul searching in terms of uh of the leadership now the conservatives are trying to capitalize on what has been a rough week for the Liberals and are increasing calls for an early election Omar all right Jeremy thanks a woman who Manie sentenced to 3 years in prison admitted to defrauding organizations by claiming her twin daughters were init was sentenced to a federal prison today the judge imposing a sentence even more severe than what the crown was asking here's ctv's Heather Wright today Karima manangi was sentenced to 3 years in prison for saying that her daughter were Inuit a lie the judge called a crime against every single Inuit in nunit it diminishes the idea of inness of our in identity aluki KARK is the president of nunit tavik Incorporated the organization that handles land claims and treaty negotiations manie fraudulently claimed her daughters amyra and Nadia Gil were adopted from an inuent mother in order to access land claim funds and get an ID card as in we know that being inuk is much more than holding an Niti card it's our relationship through our families the kinship our community our language our culture the two sisters were also awarded grants and scholarships to attend Queens University that were only available to Inuit students manie has paid back 130,000 of the $158,000 her daughters received as part of the plea deal the fraud charges against the Gill sisters were dropped there were indigenous students who didn't get scholar ships because these students did there were uh young people who didn't get jobs or positions or admission to University programs because these students did so this is not victimless well indigenous identity fraud is not new there are concerns it is growing leaders say this sentence sends an important message there's a consequence to trying to take our identity I think that that's important that that this is a precedent setting precedent setting and perhaps a first as convictions for indigenous identity fraud are rare Heather right CTV News Toronto two Two former Toronto police officers charged former yaldi school police officers have been criminally charged for their role in the slow police response to a shooting rampage at the Rob Elementary School in 2022 the two men face multiple counts of child endangerment and abandonment law enforcement was heavily criticized for not reacting quickly to the massacre it took took 77 minutes from when the 18-year-old shooter walked into the school until he was stopped 19 children and two teachers were killed a dire warning tonight about the crisis in war torn Sudan International experts Newland regiment remembered in France in a small town in northern France newlanders have been Heroes for more than a century fewer than a dozen soldiers saved the community from the Germans in the first world war but Victory came at a heartbreaking cost recently there's been a new push to remember that courage and sacrifice ctv's Garrett Barry reports the red gold and blue of New Finland and Labrador flies often in this town to remember a war story that seems ripped from the pages of story books in our town we have 10 Heroes says the mayor of Mai Lau 10 real life Heroes for hours these 10 men nine newlanders and a British soldier held off some 200 German troops many of their fellow countrymen killed or captured in a German Counterattack trying to take this community the Allies fought for 9 hours until reinforcements arrived securing the town the battle was ultimately a success for the Allied effort but it came at a high cost to the newlanders 166 Newland men died here after the battle one British general estimated it would have taken another 40,000 men to regain mchi Lau if those 10 soldiers hadn't kept it it might have been the Royal Newland regiment's most important Victory there was a time we started to forget he says we had The Monuments but we really didn't know what it represented but in the last four years since the mayor came into office there's a new push to celebrate this story a special Council post for the community's history and ceremonies like this where school children sing and honor the new finlanders that died here a lot of people who visit here come to visit the Caribou says this student who can tell you about how this town had a tough and Canadians came to help and it's not just history mayor says there's a lesson for today too all
