SP S5 E1, Xavier & Eugene discuss Big 10 Football preview

[Music] hi everybody Welcome to sports protocol I'm e Clark I'm Xavier Clark and welcome back where we're gonna dive right into the world of college football that's right Xavier and I just want the viewers or listeners to know that you know you and I are in two different locations I'm in the beautiful city of Royal Oak Michigan at Arts Beats and E sitting in the beautiful Atomic coffee and there's not many people here because they're all out at Festival having a good old time but it is air conditioned and out there it's about 90 degrees so how about you I'm currently sitting in the parking lot of a Jimmy John's and I'm gonna get a amazing sub to eat while I'm watching the MSU football game awesome well I just want to say cheers from Atomic coffee to you and atomic coffee happens to be our sponsor today of this episode so we want to thank our sponsor Atomic coffee and of course jmy Johns all right Xavier start us off talking about college football well as uh as a lot of our viewers probably know the uh college football playoff expansion is happening and the Big 10 has added uh some new key players this year we got Oregon the PowerHouse Washington who uh has Arizona's uh previous head coach Jeb fish and uh then we got UCLA and uh USC who uh you know is kind of on that cusp of possibly being a good team but they have a lot of problems specifically with their defense that makes them uh kind of an overlooked adversary this time around kind of like the way the national media has treated Michigan in their pre-season rankings ah yes the preseason rankings ranked number nine and you know that's just an extra chip on our shoulder I think um you know what we were able to do last season with all of the sign stealing and all the craziness I think um you know for them to keep have us underrated is just you know something to fuel our fire and we're going to come out guns blazing and have an amazing season you know I would think that if Conor stallions was one of those uh people that ranks the preseason we would be a little bit higher because he would have stole all the SS that's right and you know when you look at uh national championships returning um in the uh the next season Michigan is the two lowest ranked teams of all time coming off of their 98 championship and this year and I just think um that you know week two when we vers Texas uh that will give people a little bit of a view of how deep this team actually is you know the Personnel we we have the staff the um the the younger guys who are stepping up to you know really give this team um you know a lot of depth and the ability to cause a lot of Havoc well you know our viewers may not know this but we want to let them know that this is our second attempt at recording our episode one of season 4 our first attempt was yesterday and uh it got botched because the sound did not get recorded So so this is our second attempt and as we're uh as I'm listening to you it's reminding me that you know what we talked about yesterday in our first attempt at this uh episode was just all of the uh wonderful um components that are coming back for Michigan this year you know we might not have some of the seniors that are now in the NFL but we know that you know with Donovan Edwards and our uh line for our offense along with uh hon Loveland um that's a dynamic duo right there not to mention khil uh uh KHS thank you um and you know all of the other uh players that go along with that Bunch now the the quarterback I think is a mystery to the National audience and the national um uh people that rank these teams but quite frankly it's not a mystery to us because we saw our second string quarterback uh play a lot last year and even our third string quarterback got in there so um what does that tell us and what does that give the fans uh hope for the upcoming uh first two games I think that the way that Michigan runs their team gives fans hope that we can make we can make any game close or play any game the way that we want to play the game basically what I'm saying is because Mo so much of our team has gotten experience whether they're young old you know we are player Le and that means that everyone's holding themselves accountable playing up to a higher level we're not going to play Down To A team's level you know um one thing we also talked about yesterday was the fact that Joel clatt said Michigan is probably the hardest team in the Big 10 to play in terms of Ohio State and Oregon being at the top and that's because Michigan's style is so so versatile with the weapons that we use how we utilize our tight ends our running back Alex orgy with his legs or making a throw you know we have a lot of different ways that we can maneuver that teams have to prepare for yeah and you know yesterday we talked about the Penn State game from last year because it was just on re instant replay uh a couple days ago so uh both of us caught some of that footage and it was a great reminder Michigan was nine and0 at the time and I think Penn State was eight- one and so there was a big question mark uh over our heads as to whether we could handle Penn State and not only did we handle them and beat them but you know we watched um uh our running back Blake Corum uh get a giant uh run with a lot of yardage and then that put us in position to score and then we saw Donovan Edwards uh score several touchdowns in that game and I told you I said hey that's not just showing the country how great are team was at that moment it was also a preview of what's coming this year and what did you say about that um I can't remember exactly the the things I said but what I will say about Donovan Edwards is that he is gonna get the bulk of our carries this year and it's just a matter of time before he breaks out for a run and I think um our offensive line well we don't have the Personnel it will be still solid and Donovan Edwards has B bued his time to get to this place where he's in control of his Destiny he is my pick for a 2024 Heisman candidate and mark my words he's gonna have a spectacular year did you say Heisman I said Heisman he said Heisman people Heisman has been spoken right here at Atomic coffee in Royal Oak Michigan I can't believe that we are hearing the word Heisman and the season hasn't even started yet so we're gonna be playing um a game tomorrow night Saturday against um try Fresno uh that seems to be in everybody's mind a given although you know I think they said we're a 28 point favorite so chances are we're going to win this but you know you never want to say never um but you prediction what was your prediction it was 35 to7 I feel like um our defense now realistically they very well could hold uh Fresno to zero points but I think just with how football games go um you know the other team scoring seven points you know maybe in the last quarter when we put in you know our freshman or you know our fourth third fourth string guys that is you know a possible outcome that they score seven points but I think our offense is going to be able to get the ball uh moving often and quickly and we are going to see a lot of points and defensive scoring I would like to see some defensive scoring tomorrow yeah so who would you like to see Step It Up in place of Mikey Sanders still I would really like to see Jer Hill who's going to be playing that position I'd like to see him um step up and then also in terms of our back field I'd like to see Quinton Johnston I believe he's either a fourth or a fifth year you know he has a lot of experience and he should really take uh take charge out there and uh you know help our team out hey so I have a question you know Harbaugh was our coach last year even though six games he was suspended for so you know in my mind I kind of look at our current coach as this is his second year because he did Coach quite a few games I think that's the beauty of this year that he got that experience so you know it's not as new to him and he has things to go off of and you know being with the program so long and hiring from within um we're in a great position here be just with who Chiron Moore is and how passionate he is and the type of football he likes to play so really I'm just ecstatic to see you know what type of schemes you know trick plays all all that jazz that we're gonna uh go out there and you know show to uh the entire country hey so I have a question you know our quarterback last year was criticized for not throwing the ball the way he may have thrown it the previous year um and so that might be why he wasn't such a high pick in that first round yeah um but quite frankly it was part of the scheme of the team to run the ball a lot yeah and he wasn't asked to do as many throws and when he was asked he came through so I don't think there was a problem with that but do you see Chiron more now that he is completely in charge do you see him switching that up with our current quarterback situation you know I think that we are definitely going to continue to utilize the run I think it's so good for us I think the Run needs us as much as we need the run but I can't Overlook the fact that I think Chiron Moore is going to want to implement some new systems for making big plays um obviously we love to use our tight ends but I'm looking at a a recruit that we have for next year for the first time since I believe Donovan Donovan pees Jones back in 2018 or around that time when we got him we have just recruited a top 100 wide receiver which Michigan does not get top ranked Rec recruits in the wide receiver position so I can only assume that we will be trying to utilize these talented guys to you know get something moving in terms of receiving yards and that sort of thing um now my question for you is um guys like Donovan Edwards have the ability to catch the ball and receive the ball do you think we're going to see some some uh schemes where you know Donovan is catching the ball and not just yeah running it well I think that was the case with uh Blake Corum in the if I'm not mistaken in the Alabama game he was a receiver at least for one play where he was able to catch a touchdown in the end zone and it was so cool because I was like this is what you would love to see with your teams but most teams never put their uh um running backs in that position I do think Donovan will do that now isn't Donovan uh responsible for also playing the role of quarterback at least once or twice he uh I believe he might have a perfect pass percentage um and there have been countless games where he has thrown for some pretty significant yards S I think he might be four for four something along those lines one being against Iowa in the Bing Ted Championship a few years ago when he had I don't know uh how many yards it was but just a beautiful throw down the field and I think that's what's so special is like Alex orgy reminds me of Donovan Edwards in terms of athleticism but you know with Donovan being able to also throw the ball you can kind of intermix those guys with what you're going to do and um kind of just going back to the quarterback real quick Warren Davis is one of our uh quarterback room guys and I guess he is the uh the second guy I believe in contention for that spot for for uh starting QB so you know I wouldn't be surprised if we see a couple QBs actually in that first game yeah I mean you know analysts are are sort of banking on the fact that once the season starts whoever they put out there as our starting quarterback is going to be the starting quarterback just like JJ but that didn't stop our coach from putting orgy in for certain plays and our other third string guys so you know like you said yeah we're gonna have one quarterback but they're going to utilize the other quarterbacks when they need to because that's the kind of team we are we're going to put our other quarterbacks in there we're going to put two running backs in like Corum was in there with um Donovan last year many times so I think they're going to utilize that um Loveland is going to do more than just be a receiver in the middle I think he's probably going to play the role of wide receiver every once in a while yeah he's uh he's athletic enough to definitely run down the sides and he's also strong enough to be a really good blocker for some of our other guys like Tyler Morris who if you remember outran the whole Alabama defense for that nice touchdown down the side line um yeah I think you know we have a lot to hope you know be hopeful for and we have a lot of weapons that we are yet to really see and I think that's just kind of how it's always been like you know we have so much but people just have to you know be patient enough to witness uh witness them now we being our our first episode uh we're gonna keep it short and sweet so I've got about five minutes till I have to scoot out of atomic coffee to grab my uh equipment and go and do a magic show over at the Arts me me the stage is right across the street I don't know if you guys can see it but that's it oh yeah I could get the Gen all right so that's the stage I'm just staring at the stage and uh so they're tearing down the next the show that just happen and I'm gonna be the next show so we got five minutes give us your best five minute rundown of any other big 10 uh you know teams or info that you want us to know about yeah well let's uh start off with tonight's games we have uh Michigan State and we have Wisconsin both playing I believe Michigan state is a home because my uh good friend who you all know Jacob Lonnie he will be attending the MSU game and um the interesting thing about both of these teams is they both have new quarterbacks for these team teams we have Aiden Charles coming from Oregon State following their head coach to MSU I don't know who the Badgers QB is but it'll just be interesting to see how you know this uh affects their offenses and msu's team is pretty brand spanking new so I am interested to see how one of our Rivals are able to handle themselves this season then moving back yesterday we had Illinois Ruckers and Minnesota all playing games Illinois and Ruckers both beat the teams that they played respectively uh by I believe over 40 points each so they had very good games um to start the season it gives me a lot of excitement for the Big 10 and how good we are going to be this year and then Minnesota had a devastating uh two-point loss to North Carolina in the final seconds they missed a field goal and earlier they had a DED uh field goal off the crossbar which It's just tough to see when you can't you know make your kicks and really they should have won that game but it gives me hope even for Minnesota because North Carolina has been a pretty decent and respectable team over the last couple uh years so I'm excited to see um you know how they are going to continue through their seasons and then obviously going into Saturday we have the Wolverines our boys taking on um I believe they're the Bulldogs of Fresno so uh and then we won't we won't talk too much about Ohio State in Oregon but I believe they're playing as well you know they're supposed to be the top dog so we'll see if they can really live up to their names well thank you Xavier we appreciate the uh Around the Horn of big 10 from the last day those three games games tonight uh and then of course the main event tomorrow night with the Wolverines um and then you and I will meet up again uh maybe Sunday or Monday do a recap um give your prediction for the game maybe we can get Jacob Lon in the Zoom to talk about his experience yeah yeah I think that's a great idea but you have to give your prediction for the Michigan game okay so my prediction is say your score again 357 357 I'm gonna go 42 and that uh Fresno scores under 10 so I said nine 42 to nine okay I think those are both both great predictions and again my prediction on the season is 11 and one uh with that loss coming to Oregon but I can always see us going undefeated so look out for that all right and uh I am going to play that that uh across the board uh you know I'm gonna put my money on all the games and say we're gonna we're gonna run the table I like I like what I'm hearing over there well have a great show go uh make some uh Magic BLM come out of some hats and uh we will recap after the Michigan game I did uh in my first show I did have a kid come up with lions gear at shirt and uh he did a go lions in the microphone it was great got the audience riled up so there we go we got some Lions cheering going on here at rsbc needs folks it's not just about college football yes NFL coming uh coming up soon me and my friends did our uh our draft for Fantasy Football so that's exciting too that's exciting and uh coming up we have a gvsu football game on family weekend in a couple weeks uh we're gonna beast on that we're gonna be there to watch the game with you live at stadium and then um we've got a U ofm football game uh happening the second to last game in November we're all going to and then and a basketball game to check out our whole new revamped roster and Coach October 20th uh which is really really special and it's versing our home team Oakland Grizzlies which uh you actually work there so that's really cool to have that uh uh I believe it's an exhibition game which is just really cool U Grizzlies is coming off their very first time winning a game at the NCAA tournament uh March Madness they made it to the second round Kentucky no SL and against Kentucky of all teams so no slouchy win there so we're GNA see them playing uh U ofm who's rebuilding so anything could happen in Little Caesar's Arena downtown DET Tri that's right all right well great things here uh we're GNA sign off for now I'm Eugene Clark and I'm Xavier Clark and this is sports SPS prod call thanks a lot everybody for listening and we will see you soon bye-bye bye-bye
