Inside the Den 2024 Episode 3: Keeping a Winning Culture

[Music] and today I want to conclude our search process with the introduction of Dan Campbell as the new head coach of the Detroit Lions Dan will be the first to tell you that winning is the only Mission but the way in which he plans to go about that is perhaps the most important his football philosophy founded on the principles of competition identity toughness and operating with one heartbeat is something I look forward to seeing come to light and dance time as our head coach his commitment to helping drive home our culture will be unwavering he will be a positive figure in our community for our loyal fans and what better person to lead this organization than someone who played here between the white lines you've heard me talk a lot about collaboration and chemistry and making sure that everyone in our organization is aligned with the same vision that is Dan Campbell hello everybody I'm excited to be here we want to be competing for the division championship every year if we're not shooting for that then what are we doing and then and then once you become a division winner right now you're starting to talk about the next level now it may take a little bit but man this team is going to freaking take on your identity thank you this is so exciting appreciate it man I do I'm going to make youall proud We Are you have to have people that have real humility they're hardworking who are all pulling in the same direction it's team it's all about team there's no ego that's what I do know I'm going to put the right coordinators in place I'm going to put the right staff together with those cordinators that complement who I am and know how to deliver the message I wanted this job I wanted to be here man I think this is a special place I think this is because I know this when we bring a winner to this city it's going to be something we can all be proud of [Music] Brad Holmes and the Detroit Lions have been at work the Lions signing quarterback Jared G to a 4year extension he is the highest paid Lion in franchise history the Lions have signed Jared gof to a 4-year $212 million contract EX ention just the latest one after Aman Ross St Brown and pan Su locked up for the long haul all right never been out here but getting to go downtown a couple times through the week and go to restaurants and the the grit and perseverance and the um the fight that this city has I think is something that that I can bring to the table as well and um being a part of a city that that has that in its DNA is is so fun for me and so uh so cool of an opportunity and and something that I that I wrote she was still my girlfriend the same type of feeling she was taking quite the Le Fai perseverance and fight every every time I don't think anything that happened in the last few months makes it go any further of course you feel some type of way about it at first but I I'm so looking forward to what's ahead of me and and you know how I can help the Lions and how I can be the best I can be every day and and really just focusing on that I think I just want you know him to be happy and for him to be able to play in a you know place where he feels like you know he can really do something and I feel like that's here and he's excited and I'm just long for the ride so it's it's fun I'm excited I'm really excited be here it's it's it's a different place than most people understand I think you know it gets a bad WAP from afar and then you come here and you're like what what are they talking about and I think like I mentioned the the the city's heartbeat and the city's uh perseverance and and who these people are is is is something that I really am excited to play for and and to win for I met him um 2018 and so I saw you know I came in to Super Bowl year and thought experience that and that was wild but um I think I saw even more growth when you know things weren't going as good and can really just you know focus in he's the hardest worker I've ever seen he's you know always doing something watching film and getting better every single day and I think that was inspiring for me to you know be better to do better he's always you get work that's good amazing crazy 3 years yeah it's cool that video is very cool and um I think that guy had no idea what he was in for and I was very excited about being on the ground floor or something and um getting that opportunity to to build it up and I high expectations I I I think you never know how quickly it's going to happen you know drafting guys like like pan and Saint and a handful of other guys in that draft that's are still helping us and it was a building thing but I think um I was prepared to go through that and it was never easy it was never going to be easy but uh the people around me and and our coaches and teammates and everyone um helped helped get through it being able to win with with a group that previously hadn't won and we've done that with you know a lot of the same guys that were on that team in 2021 that I just felt like a much younger player then and and hopefully we say the same thing about my today self in 3 years but I was allowed to fail and and make mistakes and and learn from them and I've matured so much I've grown so much I've got so much more confidence I think for me personally like I've learned to just be consistent and and try to be the same guy every day and and show up for your teammates every day and that's the hard part everyone couldn't do it once once or twice a week and have the energy and and be be positive and be optimistic but try to do it every day and and be as consistent as possible and um if you can let that rub off on people at times it's been such a pleasure getting to know Jared I have so much respect for the guy cuz he's so consistent man every single day through the bad days the good days since year one to now it's he's the same guy every single day he comes to work on phas and ready to go Dan set a great example for that for us here and he never wavered and he could have and and there was a ton of times where there was a ton of pressure and um you know the outside noise and D Dan was incredible with that I think was more specifically in that second year when we did have a little bit more expectation and and and we're like all right now it's time to go out there and win some games and we started off one and six and man he never wavered he was the same guy and ultimately now we stand here with a culture that we believe in and something that he's set the standard for J's the type of a player that brings everyone along with him you know he makes everyone around him better talk about culture as well you can't even you know Place how important he is to this team so uh seeing him get that extension I think is exciting and um he's exactly the type of guy we need to lead this team look at what Brad Holmes has done this off season in the rest of that Lions front office Jared go has helped turn around that franchise he's been one of the best quarterbacks in football a sign of how well they've played how much the organization believes in them and what the expectations for this team are moving forward everyone sees the reward everyone sees the trophies and the extensions but the the journey and the the growth in the 3 years in the daily process is is really what matters and you work so hard and and you get rewarded that's great but I think all of that is irrelevant to uh the journey and decided this deal is done it takes up a lot of your mental energy and emotional energy and you can tell when it's getting closer to getting done and I agree read obviously that it's awesome deal and so I called Kristen um called my parents called my sister and just told them you know hey it's done and very surreal at times and different emotions going back and forth but yeah it was it was it was very cool I think uh the overwhelming emotion was just excitement that it's done and and that I know where I'm going to be for the next handful of years' been a big brother and a a shoulder to lean on for sure and we came to Detroit together was a part of that building process of our culture I do anything for that man so to have them just as long as I am here in Detroit we're going to make some great memories and seeing those two guys pan and Saint get their deals done and be rewarded and and be locked in for for quite some time like like I have been it's it's fun it's exciting it means a lot to to have done um done the hard part with them too I think that's where the real culture and the real team building comes from is when you go through the the hard times anyone can can win together and that's easy that's fun but with a guy like Dan and Ben uh being there for us and with us it we kind of went through those times together and and I've come out the other side now with with pretty big expectations for ourselves and standards for ourselves and it's really cool thing to do and and to be a part of and that was always my vision when when the trade happened is you know you could feel sorry for yourself and um be down on the whole situation or you can view it as a positive and understand the opportunity that you have and um be be grateful for the people that are around you to see him go from being a number one draft pick to making it to a Super Bowl with LA to now hitting a low point of getting traded to Detroit and and what seemed to be a losing team a losing culture at that time and be able to turn this place around it's it's really been remarkable to witness and it's it's a testament to him his character his work ethic it's it's been fun to see how the whole city is rallied around him as well I just say it like this right hey you're good enough for Detroit Jared GF has come in and not only change that franchise but he's helping be involved in the community I mean listen to what he does in the city of Detroit all of Detroit as now falling in love with Jared Goff and rightfully so for the kind of man he is very very deserving and uh obviously to see those Jared golf chants all over and everything I couldn't be more happy for him I lived in California my whole life so I Street and you come out here and you you know nothing about it and you're you're kind of trying to learn and um you end up falling in love with it and and it's it's an amazing place with amazing people and it's become home and that playoff game was unbelievable obviously and the support I received was unbelievable and something I don't know if I'll ever experience again and they they knew that that game was uh a little more meaningful to me and and had carried carried a little extra weight and I think they wanted to you know show they had my back and it's been fun it's been it's been really fun they're they're the best fans in the world and um I love playing for them I love winning for them and um they deserve winning football and uh it's our job every day to go in here and and work hard to to give them that and I'm grateful to play in front of them and and and happy I get to do it for for a little longer now it is a very special place to me now and will be for you know hope for the rest of my life but you know now I know you know where I'm going to be for the next handful of years and am excited to you know even up my efforts in the community and and do even more and and for me it's always been kids that you know are are extremely smart and and want to want to go to college but um financially can't afford to so um yeah I plan to continue to be a part of that and and uh see what else we can do there and so Jared G has become something of a hero in this particular City for this team to go reward him he deserves it right the things he's done in Detroit is Major and I think all the Detroit Lion fans will appreciate him getting this contract this guy is selfless and he works hard and he doesn't point fingers and Jared G embodies that he's played his way back in to to the conversation to be one of the best quarterbacks in the National Football League you know we've got the pieces here we've got the people in place we got the coaches in place and um feel confident about our team's ability and I hope in 3 years from from now I'm looking back on this video being like and that guy was so young he's still figuring it all out and and has no idea what what's to come and and that's the fun part is every year is a new year and you get to go from the ground floor again every year and and build it up into what you want it to be since coach Campbell's gotten here he's really laid the groundwork of what we want to be about everyone knows exactly what their role is to have success as a unit culture is about people and the type of people that you bring in actually builds your culture that's why it's important that you identify the type of players that you want the type of player that you want in your organization and that what built your culture if you bring a ton of guys in here with good character you're going to have a good culture you bring a ton of guys with bad character you're going to have a bad culture and that's simply what culture is culture is about people the key leaders they know coming into the building this is the standard that we've set this is the culture that we believe in and now it's it's everyone else the young guys the new Imports they get in line and and they understand the the lying way and every guy does not fit this culture and we all understand that so um being able to bring assign the guys that we know who they are we know what they're about and they're leaders of this team also it's the best form of leadership is influence and the guys that we brought in like they really influence everybody within this organization within this team so if you want to see how someone work just watch jar what's up definitely need a to to that you miked up no are you yo are you you're sore you're tired you're beat up you find out who's who I think we're still in the grind of it all make sure we uh continue to grow continue to elevate continue to ascend CU there still a lot to work on out there so I just trying to stack those plays stack those days and uh it's a race to get better and get better faster then get better faster than from who you're playing against so I think we have that in back of our heads there's always more to improve on always more that you can do um and I think you take that to heart and you come out here and work on [Music] it the priority for me particularly for the core of this team will be you know these next three practices like that that to me is where it all starts and depending on the type of work we get the quality work the amount of reps that'll tell me what we need or don't need going into Kansas City so here we go once again this is about guys trying to win jobs this is about guys trying to show this coaching staff that they can be trusted that's what's in front of us today with the Lions and Chiefs my go football fellas huh am I right got a couple more preseason games to get things figured out before the is good he got it on the final play of the game Jake bat sends it through it's tapped up from all his teammates as they come pouring Off the Bench to say job well done Jake banks with the game winner four out of four on field goals today your final score here in Kansas City the Lions 24 Kansas City 23 winning feels phenomenal it just does man when you put in the work that you put in man you guys fought your ass off you guys bought your ass off that game and you scratch and Claw and we just chipped away at them till the end of that game you found a way to win it man that's right it's a hell of
