hey Insight USA family welcome back to the channel where we break down the latest news and weather events from across the country today we're diving into some intense weather that rocked Michigan this past Tuesday Mitch the power outages had a ripple effect forcing businesses like grocery stores to close cancelling community events and leaving intersections without workking traffic lights making the roads even more dangerous the gandas faced a perfect storm of dangerous weather this week we're talking extreme heat that felt like 100° violent thunderstorms and even tornado sirens blaring across the state over 365,000 homes and businesses were left in the dark as power outages swept across Michigan Dave cook a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in White Lake Township described this as a rare kind of instability something we only see once or twice a year and boy did it hit hard by 10 p.m. nearly 143,000 Consumers Energy customers in northern Michigan and Grand Rapids were without power meanwhile an additional 224,000 DT Energy customers in southeast Michigan were also affected both utilities brought an extra Crews to work through the night to restore electricity and let's not forget the heat a heat advisory was issued across the state with schools adjusting schedules and some even closing early but the concern isn't just about today it's about what this means for the future climate science ists are warning that this kind of extreme heat is becoming more common and more deadly in fact heat related deaths have been on the rise with over 2,300 reported in 2023 alone and this past June and July were among the hottest on record globally beyond the immediate human health risks this heat is also creating dry conditions leading to wildfires and the warming of lakes and oceans it's a vicious cycle that's affecting everything from our air quality to our planet's natural ecosystem systems but in the face of these challenges michiganders are keeping a sense of humor social media was buzzing with reactions from people sharing their concerns to making light of the situation one person joked that it was just another day in Alabama while another reminded us all to leave water out for our pets while the weather is expected to cool off later this week this serves as a stark reminder of the growing impact of climate change stay safe out there and don't forget to subscribe to Insight USA for more updates on the latest news and weather
