what's going on everybody welcome into this special edition of the pack aay podcast as we break down the Packers 53 man roster of the cuts the trade for Malik Willis and everything that set this Packers roster where it is right now of course not finalized a lot can happen over the course of the next 24 hours but definitely definitely some surprises that have taken place over the last 24 hours most importantly or maybe most interestingly Anthony Johnson Jr released and I thought he had a fantastic last preseason game played Super physical and you know I know he was a seventh round pick a season to go struggled a little bit to get on the field last year but he started camp in like the rotation with the starters I know he fell out of that a little bit and it was obviously Javon Bullard and Evan Williams but this is somebody that could play teams he can play defense definitely surprised by that move I thought there was still uh you know if if nothing else a developmental player there and somebody that could probably help them right now they went with you know obviously still five safeties katano adopo gets in and then uh you know obviously Zay Anderson gets in as a special teams guy as well um but a lot of interesting moves for Green Bay some names that I think fans are maybe not going to be too upset about and I'll just say it very clearly I know this is a really tough day for a lot of people um I don't wish anybody to get fired from their job period end of story when you sign up for the NFL whether you're a coach or a player you're basically signing up to get fired someday it's going to happen to everyone and hopefully for a lot of these guys this is not the end of their Journey it's only the beginning of their journey and hopefully all of them catch on either in the Packers practice squad or with another team and can continue to develop and master their craft and become really good players throughout the course of the league um but from uh you know Packer fan standpoint like I was saying I'm sure some Royce Newman's some Andre Carlson's some um Sean Clifford some players who have struggled no longer on the roster um I think one of the harder things it seems like AJ Dylan may have played his last down as a member of the Green Bay Packers not to say that that's for sure he goes on season ending injured reserve he will not play this year he was on a one-year deal uh my guess is that may end up in some sort of injury settlement hopefully Dylan's not hurt to the effect that you know it's SE or career ending or anything like that but that's going to be a really um I think a tough one for a lot of people just because obviously Dylan very beloved um you know in the Green Bay D County area but that that's a really interesting move Emanuel Wilson makes it and you have a lot of great stories too right Aaron Mosby and Brenton Cox um I was I just flat out wrong I thought they would go maybe with less defensive ends it didn't really seem like there was a ton of need outside of the top four instead they go with both Mosby and brenon Cox I didn't think there was really an opportunity for them to keep six but they found a way Jonathan Ford another one that's rather interesting in the effect that he gets put on IR does designated to return and not some of the other ones I thought maybe Robert Michelle would I thought maybe AJ Dylan would thought maybe Tyler Davis would but instead you end up with Jonathan Ford being the only one that's on IR designated to return so not sure I necessarily saw that in the cards either but um some stuff definitely went a little bit more according to plan two of the rookies that did not make it Michael Pratt obviously this is a really interesting one as well uh Michael Pratt you end up in a situation where not only did he not make the 53 of course per Bill Huber it will not be Michael Pratt on the practice squad it will be Shawn Clifford on the practice squad I guess there's maybe some small chance that they could try to bring both back and go with four quarterbacks total I think the odds of that are relatively slim but to go from somebody who seem to be in competition for a 53 man spot and maybe even as a backup QB to not even make it really seemingly have interest back in the practice squad that's a really interesting development and then Shan Clifford coming back instead like that you would think that the practice squad is more for the developmental guy which would seem to be more of a you know Michael Pratt than it would be a Sean Clifford you do end up in this interesting scenario that it might have to be sha Clifford as the backup in week one or until Malik Willis gets adjusted to this offense and you might have to call up Sean Clifford over those first couple weeks to do that but they're going to have to sort of parse all of that out and how they want to kind of go about that but Michael Pratt in all likelihood just being gone from the roster entirely is potentially pretty stunning kayin King another seventh rounder and I get like who are released here seventh round guys right kayin King Michael Pratt Anthony Johnson Jr at some point there was a reason why these guys lasted as long as they did but it's still an interesting discussion and with kayin King you have a player that I thought showed very well in training camp showed very well in preseason showed playmaking ability and so much um you know that that's a lot of times on defense the name of the game is the ability to go and make big plays and he made a plethora of them and I really thought that when you have that sort of upside and show that you can be a playmaker like you kind of let the other stuff come along a little bit more and develop them now I would expect kayin King will be back on the practice squad and that they will continue to develop him but I definitely thought that there was going to be a very good chance that he was actually just on the 53 man roster so a lot of really interesting decisions Christian Welch does not get on the active I did not expect him to be on the active but um it was definitely very close another one Grant toos this is the one that I talked about on the show yester yesterday I just had Malik Keith well ahead of Grant tuos by the end of camp and it's not to say that like I said I got certainly some stuff wrong um but that was one that it felt like keath had been the clearly better player especially over the last few weeks and that ended up being the case and I'm sure they're going to want to get to Bose back in the practice squad some really good wide receivers released through the course of the league um I would expect that Grant toose does not get claimed and they are able to get him back on the practice squad and I think that's the other big thing too is like this is obviously a huge day to set that initial 53 three tomorrow is probably going to be more important from Green Bay and their standpoint of guys that you're hoping do not get claimed then it is uh trying to claim players now kicker could be one of the really interesting ones there Andre Carlson gone Greg Joseph currently on the 53 do they try to claim another kicker or is it just Greg Joseph that's going to be a really interesting development but outside of that there are a lot of players whether it's kin King a Robert relle uh Christian Welch um obviously Sean Clifford we talked about Grant Duos I think someone like Joel Wilson There are a good amount of players that I think Green Bay is going to want back on this practice squad that I think can help Green Bay in 2024 um just like we saw some practice guys like Bo Melton help the team in 2023 so tomorrow I think really hope that a lot of these guys that the Packers release do not get claimed so you can get them back and then if you are looking for waivers I would say kicker is probably the big one that you obviously want to keep an eye on um and then you know you never know what goody will do he's always looking to improve the roster in some capacity and if you can find a player that he thinks makes sense to improve he'll do it but I I would really keep an eye on kicker is kind of the main one uh thanks for the content you are more than welcome uh The Adventures of jig pull shoty a great name uh and I appreciate the Super Chat a ton all right I will try to get to as many questions as I can per usual I will put super chats to the top of the list followed by member chats and then uh I will go from there all right salty Jordy Dylan dun kin King and Anthony Johnson released wowow uh yeah uh we obviously walked kind of through all of those um not super shocked by the Dylan one because we just didn't know the extent of the injury right and obviously it was worse than what we expected kin King Anthony Johnson Jr definitely a bit more surprising I expected both of those guys to be on I think ajj is probably the most surprising move that they made um but in general I definitely thought King and Anthony Johnson Jr were going to be on the roster it's crazy that they kept both Mosby and Cox and released King and Anthony Johnson Jr the Mosby Cox thing is super intriguing to me obviously we haven't talked a ton about that yet but what one of the things and one of the reasons why I kind of expected them to maybe go in a different direction is for a variety of reasons here and to be clear if they pick up some players we could still see maybe one or both of these guys released tomorrow but you look at the defensive end position right and Smith enbar Gary and L LVN so Smith Gary enar LVN those four are going to take all of the snaps at defensive end like there are not it's not like you're going to bring you know bring in Brett and Cox for a cup of tea here or there like those four are like there's already probably not enough snaps to go around for those four guys so there's not really room for a fifth much less a sixth add on the fact that Brenton Cox is not a special teams guy Mosby is but then also add on the fact that if you cut both you probably feel pretty good that you're going to get one of those guys back um but they decided they wanted to keep both now the the thing that they both had going for them is that it is definitely more of a premium position than maybe a safety or I mean I guess even just a lot of different positions on the team but I I am surprised I I I think I even said yesterday and again I'll just own this one I think I said one of the things I'd be the most surprised by is if they went with six I thought they easily could go with five either Bretton Cox or Aaron Mosby I thought they'd go with four but going with six is definitely a really interesting scenario and you kind of look at a active you know 48 Man game day roster I would kind of expect that at least brenon Cox is probably inactive because again not really a teams guy maybe Mosby gets active based on the fact that he can do some teams but it wouldn't shock me if both of those guys were not active on the game day roster and now it's going to be a little bit more interesting just to see how they kind of navigate that and clearly they thought that just the upside for both of those two players was there and enough that they wanted to hang on to both of them crazy day so far in goody we trust all right what else uh definitely sounds like Dylan is done I hope that's not the case hopefully he can come back but he's obviously done for the year at this point Alex stunned that they kept six defensive ends I am too did not see that coming obviously we just kind of talked through that a little bit do you think goody puts in a claim for Dante Foreman I do not I I I would be surprised by that I think they probably know part of this is going to be dependent upon how healthy marshan lyd is obviously he's healthy enough that they didn't think he was going to be part of the you know IR designated to return which they had one more spot if they wanted it right they could have put it on him they could have put it on Dylan they could have put it on Tyler Davis uh and they did not do that so uh it would seem to me that he's going to be back sooner rather than later and I think those are probably just your three running backs if they did really like a running back maybe a daic prince from Kansas City Dante Foreman uh the Broncos cut a couple guys that could be interesting Tyler baddy um they could go in that direction but my guess especially as you get to the point where some of these guys are really trying to you know learn you know have to learn a new system and everything like that is that they just go with Emanuel Wilson and maybe they'll look at bringing one of those guys on on the practice squad that you could call up at some point this season and of course I think the two running backs that they released McCary and Merryweather will be uh possibilities for the practice squad as well Tyler Davis was hurt he had a shoulder injury had a really rough preseason game in week two injured injured his shoulder after that my final prediction I did put him on like season ending IR because you can't you can't release him you can't wave him injured because he's a vested veteran so you basically have to put him on ir and then release him so it might only be a one or two we thing for Davis it could be a season thing for Davis but you know based on how the procedures work they would have had to have put him on IR if he was hurt there's no other you know anything that they could have done so he goes on IR now we'll see if they work out an injury settlement or if he actually stays on IR through the entirety of the Season I'd be willing to bet good money Tucker craft can kick uh I'll take you I mean he can kick in some capacity but probably not the actual kicker loving football is Greg Joseph A formality until they see if they can get who they could submit a claim for this is a really tough one to read you know it's it's it's hard to know if they have a kicker in mind that they really like or if they're just going to go Greg Joseph maybe they bring in one of the kickers that was released but start him on the practice squad and don't just go week one and give Greg Joseph the opportunity first but if he falters at all they go to the guy in the practice squad this is going to be a really tough one to side if they you know I guess you know if they felt really strongly about a kicker I think they would have made a trade for one and like one of the guys that was doubled up on a roster and they clearly did not do that you know is there a guy that maybe they like that got waved like if it was narvis um who you know just gets released in Tennessee they just say throw him in the deal for Malik Willis and they're not they're not going to say no they weren't going to trade him to anyone else and then narvis they're they're basically doing narvis in a favor as well so if they wanted somebody like him he just gets included the Malik Willis steel so my guess is it's not him um so yeah just a really interesting situation I don't know if there was like a surprise kicker that got cut today obviously haven't had the opportunity to go through all 32 teams cuts and I'm sure all of them aren't even out yet but that'll be an interesting thing to keep an eye on to is if there is a kicker that gets released that maybe people weren't expecting uh love and football Anthony Johnson Jr make it make sense my guess is this probably came down to a couple things one is probably special teams and they felt that Zay Anderson was just a better special teams guy than Anthony Johnson Jr and then if you're looking at like a developmental player at safety if they felt like he wasn't going to be a core part of the rotation right now which he was not going to be because you have Evan Williams Javon Bullard and Xavier McKenna then it comes down to a situation where you have two you have Z mckin is not going anywhere for a while then you have Evan Williams and Javon Bullard who look like they could be your starting safeties for a while if you needed it and then you still have a developmental guy in katano ladapo after that and I think that's what it kind of comes down to they did not really need a developmental guy and they didn't really necessarily probably need him as a core special teamer if you're going to keep a Zayn Anderson I am surprised by it I wouldn't have done it I would have kept him on the roster but um as is very obvious my opinion does not matter in these decisions whatsoever but I think if you're trying to like you know twist your mind around it a little bit that would probably be the reason why oh sorry I missed a bunch of super chats uh Connor Bradshaw why Joseph over Carlson I don't know um Carlson had the the better Camp preseason arguably of the two at least from a percentage standpoint my one guess if I had to guess and again we don't know if this is going to be something where they just release Joseph tomorrow and pick up somebody else which could easily be the case but this probably comes down to short field goals and extra points it's one thing if if you know like hey Joseph is going to struggle from 45 plus all right well then let's make make a decision to either punt or go for it in those situations and we'll kind of figure that out but at least you feel more comfortable maybe in the 45 and under and in the extra points that Greg Joseph is going to make those I don't recall any easy misses from Joseph I could easily be misremembering or getting them transposed with other kickers that have been through camping in preseason and uh in OTAs and stuff so far but it feels to me and I'd have to go back and look it feels to me like Joseph has been more consistent from the easier sort of field goals whereas with Anders the 32 yard Miss is just almost a non-starter you cannot have a kicker that you are relying upon in a season where you are expecting to compete where you don't know if he can go out and make a 32 yard that is a huge issue so I think that just ultimately loses the trust when you miss a 32 yard when you know your job is on the line right in perfect conditions at Lambo good snap and you can't hit a 32 Y and it looked that ugly like that again is just the the issue there with Anders whether it's Joseph or not I wholeheartedly understand the the reason why you move on from Anders at this point there's just and there's been no signs of progress with Anders whatsoever now with Joseph he's had what seven years and he hasn't exactly showed any signs of progress either but again that one thing would lead me to believe a little bit more of maybe they're feeling like hey at least the gimmies he's going to make at least the 40 to 40 and anything under that the extra points he can hit those and at least we know what to expect then and if it's anything over 45 and we put him out there and he misses that's on us because we know that might be more of a a roller coaster but what does surprise me is Joseph really faltered towards the end of camp in preseason like it was it has been a a tough stretch for him so like if he ended like he started and it was like because he started pretty hot and he looked really good and if he would have ended that way I think this would have been a no-brainer but he's been really inconsistent as of late so that's the other thing too that makes this sort of mind- numbing but maybe they go in a different direction maybe an Austin cybert maybe who you know who knows but I I I don't know we we're gonna have to kind of wait until tomorrow and figure out what direction they want to go in at kicker uh Caleb Jones over Andre Dillard in my opinion I'm a Sad Panda nick uh I think this was probably pretty much you know writing on the wall at this point I talked about Caleb Jones a lot this offseason and that this was the maker break year for him and sort of if you get two red shirt years like Yash nyman did like Alex light did in year three you either have to be ready like Yash nyman was or you're not ready like Alex light was not ready and if you're in year three and you're not ready after two retr seasons it's just it's done it's over it's time to move on and they've done that with a lot of different players I think Raven Green in year three ended up moving on from and you're going to get those first two years maybe to red shirt but year three is not a guarantee I think Vernon Scott was another one that happened that way two red shirt years although one of those was mostly on ir and then the third year was just gone you get the two years to red shirt if you're not ready in year three it's dunzo and Caleb Jones had to come out and show that he was ready to come in and contribute and be at least a swing tackle right now and he didn't do that and Dillard was better Kadeem telfort was better and Travis Glover showed more upside so I think Caleb Jones the writing was a little bit on the wall there I do think there's an outside chance he could be back on the practice squad but like I said they kind of gave him those two years and I don't know they're going to want to continue to put the time effort and energy in if he hasn't shown that ability to get better by year three um as far as Dillard goes the interesting thing with Dillard and the reason I had him on my 53 is because he's been pretty darn good at left tackle in training camp in OTAs at right tackle he's been a nightmare but now you sort of have this situation where you don't I don't think you maybe have a true swing tackle right now I think you might have hey if something happen let me start over in a little bit here if if you have an injury issue I think you might try to get Shawn Ryan on the field first no matter what right and that might mean if left tackle goes down you have to kick Elton Jenkins to left tackle or you have to kick Jordan Morgan to left tackle or if Zack Tom goes down you have to kick um you know uh Elton Jenkins or Jordan Morgan to right tackle they might do that first and to try to get their best five guys out there but then if you get to a left tackle being out and you're on your seventh offensive lineman at that point I could see it being Andre Dillard's the left tackle and if if it's a right tackle injury Kadeem telfor is the right tackle and I think that makes it a little bit more attend allow Telford to focus on right tackle though he does have a little bit more versatility let Dillard be the left tackle and I think sort of combined between those two you have your swing tackle and that's kind of how I view it but Dillard's been pretty solid SLG good at left tackle but just a nightmare at right and telford's shown a little bit better ability to swing to both sides which is going to be an added value as well and the thing the thing that I mentioned with Dillard as well if you release Andre Dillard all right and and we can argue and say like hey Dillard's just not that good he might be like the Roy Newman of tackles okay um that might be the case I think he's better than that but let's just say he is he was awful I mean awful last year in Tennessee at left tackle I mean absolutely awful all right but he I thought he showed better at left tackle in Camp than he did what you know what he showed in Tennessee last year or even what he was doing at R tackle this year um but if you release him it is almost impossible to find any remotely capable offensive lineman on waivers or in free agency that is able to come in and play for you now I know everyone's going to point to well David bakari the David bakti injury situation clouds things and there's a difference between what you might have to pay him and paying Andre Dillard and that's just a whole different can of worms there's a reason why right now as of today as of this moment David bakari is still not on a team all right but outside of that crazy scenario you just can't find guys like that so if you release him I think some other team probably does give him a look at some point this season and you might never find a player that can even be that caliber regardless of what you think that caliber is again out there because those guys just get scooped up so fast in the depth around the league is really bad so that to me is why you keep Dillard on this roster even if it is you know a Kadeem tford or even if you wanted to keep Travis Jones and even if you didn't want to keep 10 offensive lineman to me it makes sense to keep 10 because it is so hard in season to find anyone that can help you out at that specific position uh Wilson outplayed Dylan anyway I think that's a fair observation to make Wilson looked good in preseason I know Dylan only got the four carries there was nothing he really could have done on the four I thought Dylan looked good in Camp it would have been a very interesting conversation decision if Dillard was entire uh sorry if Dylan was entirely healthy but he wasn't the decision was basically made for them Dylan goes on ir and again we'll see if this is something where he stays on IR the whole year or if he gets an injury settle like if he's gets an injury settlement in like the first four weeks which means that they could have brought him or put him on IR designated to return what it amounts to is they just released him like they could have brought him back at some point and they didn't want to um but if he's out if he's on the roster for a while that means they probably wanted to maybe keep him but it the injury issue sort of clouded everything so we we'll see but you know I don't think uh I'll just put it this way I think Emanuel Wilson was deserving of that spot regardless of what was going to happen with Dylan Wilson did everything he could to claim that number three spot and he deservedly got on as the number three running back or might probably even be number two to start the season while Marshon Lloyd gets back healthy uh newer Newman was a starter on a number one seed at one time he was um he played over a thousand snaps at Right Guard in 2020 for the you know the the team that eventually lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers um he was not great that year I would not argue he was good that year but he was at worst and I mean at worst serviceable and if that Royce Newman right if that Royce Newman that played his rookie season that was a serviceable guard in this league showed up over the last couple years or even just this year he is a no-brainer top 10 offensive lineman on any team in the NFL period end of story rookie Royce Newman was a top 10 he's going to make probably 32 rosters in the NFL now there may be a team that runs more power than whatever and maybe it's a little bit different but you get my point he was by far good enough to make every team's depth chart when he was a rookie the issue is no progression in fact I would argue significant regression never really got it back and we've just not seen a player that has been capable of playing any sort of consistent football and this is another one that the writing was on the wall you know some people thought maybe he was going to get traded I I could not imagine anyone was willing to trade anything for fory Newman which ended up being the case I hope he finds a roster spot it could be on the Packers practice squad they could keep him and and people might say like oh my God I'm I'm so done with Royce Newman I don't want him back if he is back at worst or I should say maybe at best at best he's your 11th offensive lineman on a practice squad contract if Royce Newman's your 11th offensive lineman you're fine I think they probably just go in a different direction because kind of like we talked about with Caleb Jones they've given him this is his fourth year right if he if he hasn't shown any sort of upside or consistency by this point it's probably just done the ship is probably sailed and it's probably better to you know develop somebody like a Donovan Jennings or a Lea Smith to see if they actually can become something down the road and I think that's what Green Bay will do I think it's more likely that Las Smith and Donovan Jennings are on the practice squad than Royce Newman but it's maybe not an impossibility but either way just a very disappointing career Arc for a fourth rounder who showed some really impressive stuff on tape coming out he was so quick out of his stance in college thought he showed that in his rookie season and then I don't know if he just couldn't find the right weight to quickness uh I I don't know but it's just been a really weird journey and I said I hope he he finds his way gets better and and latches on somewhere regardless of where it is uh Philip lutter are they considering character and learning ability in their decision and have you heard anything bad in that regard with Pratt or King I have I have not although I will say this uh and I don't know the answer to that question quite frankly I am sure the ability to pick up The Playbook and just general character is something we know Green Bay values quite a bit I will say this with Michael Pratt and sometimes there is stuff that is quote unquote kind of hiding in plain sight that you wish maybe you would have taken a little bit more into consideration when asked first of all uh about Michael Pratt when I asked him at OTA or at the end of mini camp I should say what do you want to see from Michael Pratt when he comes back or something to that extent he's like right now he's you know it's like drinking water through a fire hose and he wanted to see him come back and have a better grasp of the Playbook when he came back at training camp and then Matt laflor was asked at the start of training camp by somebody else about the progress of Pratt and he basically was kind of saying again like yep he's really got to get in the Playbook and learn the system something to that extent I'm paraphrasing here of course and then the big one though was when stovich was asked about him when Adam stovich was asked about Michael Pratt there was like a discernable like how do I want to talk about this guy like I I don't want to bury him or throw him under the bus and he didn't like say any of this but he he was like he sighed he like it it was like an audible visual sigh of like how do I want to talk about this kid positively but really there's some struggles here but then like the hard part was you juxtaposed it with sha Clifford who apparently knew the Playbook and was in your two and is this guy that you know understands the system more and everything like that and Pratt from the naked eye looked like he was running the offense better than sha Clifford and I would argue very much with the lack of turnovers the more consistent playmaking the stronger arm Pratt just looked better than Clifford through the entirety of the offseason including preseason so you look you hear some of the comments from La Florence Deno and and those guys and you're like all right in hindsight I probably maybe should have seen this coming a little bit more where it was clear that they did not have a ton of confidence in what he was doing um but again the play on the field sort of spoke differently they talked about Sean Clifford as being a gamer it almost felt a bit more like Michael Pratt was the one who was a little bit more of a gamer and found ways to get things done when needed so that I this is why this stuff is so difficult to predict because we get small bits and pieces of this and we could maybe look back and say yeah maybe that you know that that question that stano answered should have been more of a tell and that maybe there wasn't a level of trust there maybe didn't understand the uh Playbook or was having trouble picking it up and to be crystal clear I don't know that for sure maybe by the end of Camp he understood the the the Playbook perfectly I have no idea right but just going back to some of those comments it does raise a little bit more of a question and the fact that again from Bill Huber's reporting that they're not even interested in him from a practice squad standpoint that Clifford is still beating him out from a practice squad standpoint um you know that that's a really interesting development so there may be something there but that's again sort of the blind spot for all of us is that we don't get to see what's going on behind closed doors the all 22 only shows the field it doesn't show the locker room it doesn't show the offices it doesn't show so all of that stuff goes behind the scenes unless it's on Hard Knocks and we as we know Green Bay is very much not on Hard Knocks uh Connor and thank you all for the super chats really appreciate these a ton H do you think the bad kicking lately has been a holing issue seems like it could be contributing to it sorry for all the kicker questions I haven't seen anything I I would tend to believe right on the 32 yard field goal when that Anders missed that when he was asked about it he would have said like you know you know I know Andre missed the 32 y but you know we need to clean up the operation and that's stuff that Matt has said many times in the past of like hey it takes everyone and the operation needs to be better like he has called it out before I have not heard a thing about the operation from orik or from from Daniel willan and I can pretend to know a lot of stuff or whatever I am not going to pretend I know the intricacies of long snapping or holding I know lace is out Dan I know that much but out and I know you want a little bit of a tilt but every kicker usually wants it a little bit different I would tend to believe all right just my best guess here I would tend to believe if they spent a sixth round fifth fifth sixth round sixth round I think sixth round pick on Anders Carlson have been developing him for two years and if the issue was on the holder or the Long Snapper you're not cutting the six round guy that you've been trying to develop you're going to say we need a different holder let's try somebody else or let's get a new Long Snapper in here let's try somebody else but instead Matt Orek still on the team they brought in competition Peter Bowen who was thought of as the best undrafted or the best rookie Long Snapper in the draft even though he went undrafted and Orek beat him basically twice they cut Bowen then brought back Bowen and orac beat him both times and then Daniel whan has been the kind of consistent holder over the last couple years and by all accounts it seems like he's doing a fairly good job at it so I I don't think that they released the kicker if this is a holding slash um you know long snapping issue and I'll just add one more thing here all right if you are a pro kicker I don't care how that ball is snapped or held unless it's like on its side it's a 32 Yer you got to find a way to punch that thing through it's not always going to be perfect it's not always going to be ideal and I can understand hey you know anything like 45 yards and it's a bad hold a bad snap can throw off the entire thing if it's a 32 yard again I don't care if if the laces are facing you find a way to punch that thing through it's a 32 yarder you're a pro kicker you got to find a way to make it so for me it doesn't seem that way but tough to say and like I said I'm not going to pretend that I have all the answers from a a long snapping slh holding standpoint all right for anyone especially members that were uh um asking questions before I think we're out at Super chats now for now so I'm going to try to get to but feel free to ask again cuz I'm not going to go all the way back to the top Clifford was cut to just Malik Willis and Jordan love right now correct yep talked about that uh go scares me sometimes what scares you about goo angry casual fan I'd love to know I I think overall he's done a pretty good job putting this roster together let me add one big thing to this that we have not discussed yet I'm not saying that there can't be a guy that they release that they have regrets over at some point that that can happen that'll happen to almost every single team at some point in time I think Green Bay if you're going to look at the win loss column they have done a much better job of poaching players like a Bo Melton from a practice squad and alen Lazard from a practice squad um rosul Douglas from a practice squad and finding guys that you know or or or claiming guys like a Ben Sims off of waivers last year they have done a better job of finding those sort of guys and finding other teams mistakes than they have made making their own mistakes where waving players and having them claim from other teams and them going out and have a ton of success so I actually think they're on the plus side of that ledger overall but my overarching thought here is the vast vast vast majority of the time it is not guys 45 through 53 that we're talking about today which is a fun discussion it's fun to talk about we all are hyped up about who's going to make this 53 man roster it is not the final eight that is going to win or lose you that game against San Francisco last year that's going to lose or win you the game in the divisional round or wild card game or championship game this upcoming year it is the top 20 guys or top 30 guys maybe that are GNA ultimately decide are you a Super Bowl team or are you getting eliminated before that and part of that might have to do with injuries and of course that's why the depth matters but it is your top players your top playmakers that will ultimately decide the season the difference between guys 45 and 53 and any of the like and like the top five to six guys that were released on 32 teams across the league is minut Ule I mean absolutely minuscule so I know we get worked up and I know people will like Grant Duos and people will like Christian Welch and people those are not the guys in in a perfect world Grant BOS never sees the field this season if he was the seventh wide receiver in a perfect world Grant to Bose would never ever see the field in a perfect world Christian Welch outside of special teams would never see the field as a linebacker in a perfect world Zayn Anderson's on the team he'll be a core special teamer he will never see the field as a safety it is not guys 48 through 53 or whatever it is the guys that are on the top of the roster and we've known those guys for a long time now and that doesn't again mean that you don't want to continue to develop these players because you don't know when a Bo Melton's going to come along that can make your team off of the practice squad and make a big impact at the end of the year so you want to continue to develop those guys but as I've said Green Bay has done a much better job of finding those guys on their own than losing those guys by releasing players too early so I you know as much as we get attached to these guys don't get too attached to the you know guys that are right around that bubble whether they made it or didn't make it the odds that that's going to actually be the thing that affects the season and tilts it one way or the other and I know the margins are ra razor thin it's still very very unlikely that that's going to be the differentiator on the season I will make the caveat though kicker a little bit different that's a big one and you need to make your kicks and what they do at kicker over the next 24 hours whether it's keep Craig Joseph or bring someone else in that could theoretically have a pretty big impact uh let's see I think there was two more uh from a Super Chat are any of the personal comments from the Packers beat reporter smoke screens to hide what the Packers actually think or what they want to do um my ballit uh is is the name here uh I guess maybe can you clarify for me I'll try to keep an eye in the chat um can you clarify like an example of what you mean my guess is maybe not but probably not but if you give me an example I can try to answer that a little bit better uh Greg buy yourself a Luigi's Pizza Great Channel Andy appreciate that a ton Greg uh yes everyone should get themselves a Luigi's Pizza see if that uh followup from uh my ballit comes in here all right King Kermit missed the start so I'm gonna have to get out of the chat to keep out of the spoilers just want to say go pack go let's go you're the best Andy King Kermit you are more than welcome I'm assuming you're going to go back and listen to it from the start that's what you mean is is what I'm hoping I see what you mean but Carlson and Amari was 43 to 53 and they lost us plenty of games all right well fair enough well said and to your point angry casual fan I do think there are times where they can keep players in the developmental phase hoping that they're going to take a step and they keep them for too long that absolutely can happen I think Green Bay almost went in the opposite direction here right like I think in a lot of Seasons they would have just kept a Michael Pratt they maybe would have just kept a kin they would have kept an Anthony Johnson Jr what they're saying is like no we want we'd rather have Zayn Anderson who can help us on special teams right now we would rather have Corey Ballentine who does not have the long-term upside of maybe a kin King but he can help us more right now um you know really kind of Travis Glover might be the only quote unquote red shirt sort of player that they kept on this roster so uh it might if anything be the uh the opposite direction josk good to see you buddy looking forward to chatting with you soon uh any getting claimed Anthony Johnson Jr I think Anthony Johnson Jr can probably get claimed um yeah I I don't think anyone else probably trying to think like would I don't think any team would be crazy enough to claim Anders um I don't think I talked about Michael Pratt the other day where like he was this close to being a udfa everyone passed on him for seven rounds and now Green Bay the team that doesn't cut late round picks and is known for developing quarterbacks is like no we're good we don't want this guy I certainly don't and don't even want him on the practice squad apparently don't think anyone claims him uh running back no du Bose I I would highly doubt it just based on some of their wide receivers that got um that got released through the course of the league I don't think any offensive lineman don't think any defensive tackles don't think any Edge rushers there's nobody left um don't think Christian Welch does kin king would be the interesting one to me so I would say kin King and Anthony Johnson Jr I think would be the two most likely and if it was one I probably would go Anthony Johnson Jr uh all right uh Richard Lee is there any significance to the order of when players are announced as released no no significance there goody just said that with these Cuts we are winning it now let's go I like it I thought you actually scared me for a minute Jordan like I'm like oh my god did I miss Goody's press conference and then I'm like no that's tomorrow but I like actually panicked for a second uh does Green Bay value the quality of makes misses instead of just the end result as in where Joseph makes more right down the middle and is closer than Anders in that fact it absolutely could be how he strikes the ball the confidence with which he's doing it um and again maybe being more consistent from uh a shorter distance and maybe hitting it more clean right down the middle like some of Andre's makes were still iffy like he would make kicks and you'd be like that still didn't look right whereas with Joseph at least when he made it it looked more consistent so that absolutely could play a factor uh let's see Angry casual fan I'm sure the Jaguars could use anthon that would be great because well they released Amos so they don't have Amos anymore but it would have been great if they just did a whole you know conglomeration of former Packer safeties go with Amos Darnell Savage and uh and Anthony Johnson Jr uh Mando what do you think the o line uh starting lineup is Walker Jenkins Meyers and Zack Tom at right tackle the only question is Right Guard I believe it'll be Shawn Ryan and I think they will rotate in Jordan Morgan at Right Guard uh maybe not in week one but sooner rather than later I think they'll start a little bit of a rotation there and I think Shawn Ryan in the meantime is your default starter but Jordan Morgan will continue to probably put pressure on that until at some point he probably just earns the job or they split it 5050 all here we go maybe possibly watch what happens to Pratt see if they actually move on or if this is a creative way to get him into the practice squad okay I see what you're saying and I I should be I should clarify here for a minute um I don't think that bill and I have to go and reread it I don't think Bill said that they're not interested in Michael Pratt it did say that it's I think he did say something to the effect that he's going to have to try to find his way in a different practice squad now and he definitely said that the priority is is Sean Clifford but and I can't imagine they go with two quarterbacks on the practice squad but I just want to clarify that a little bit but I my guess is you know Bill's amazing at this um and he would also know if he was getting sort of you know maybe used a little bit uh he wouldn't run with that if it wasn't a lead pipe you know he certainty at that point so I I don't think so but you you never quite know keeping more defensive ends may be related to the new kickoff rules you know maybe but they actually if you remember they actually went lighter at a lot of those positions it was more corners safeties wide receivers on the kickoff rules than it was big you know defensive ends or things like that and Brenton Cox is not shown to be somebody that's more of a teams guy I don't see really LVN on teams enig bar might be a little bit but Preston smth and ran Gary certainly aren't playing teams Mosby could be a little bit different we could see some Aaron Mosby on teams all right uh David Prendergast Andy what's your grade on Anthony Johnson Jr last season it wasn't great uh let's [Music] see all right uh o that's the wrong one sorry one moment please all right here we go all right so Anthony Johnson Jr 2023 defense he had a negative 1.45 grade on 334 snaps was actually one of my five lowest graded players on a per playay basis on defense last year along with uh Cory Balentine kesan Nixon uh dandre Campbell and Lucas vaness actually of all players so those are on a per playay basis but yeah did did not grade well I did think he looked a lot better I'll say at least better in in preseason this year than he looked at any point last year the NFL just announced that private Equity 10% ownership rule is passed will this affect the Packers can't imagine private equity in Green Bay I'm not sure I haven't looked into it too much my guess is you're probably right but when there's money involved I I I you never quite know and we'll see what happens with that I feel like uh late round prospects don't pan out a lot Jonathan Ford jamond Moore Ty Summers Kadar hman Clifford Etc we always get shocked by the cuts But ultimately everything works out yeah there there's definitely some that are on the opposite end of that Spectrum though as well carington Valentine was a seventh round guy Rasheed Walker was a seventh round guy Zack Tom was a fourth rounder um Davian Wix is a fifth rounder so there's definitely a lot of people that are also on the other side of things so it's just a balancing act some of your early round picks are going to bust some of them are going to work out some of your late round guys are going to be steals a lot of them are going to flame out just the name of the game in the NFL Jed Andy how good of a kicker are you I heard an opening on a team with Super Bowl aspirations no thanks I will pass I don't want that pressure on my plate and I would suck at it also how do you think Jacobs Wilson and Lloyd will do as our backfield I think they're going to be more than fine I think I I'm really excited to see when Lloyd gets back and hopefully healthy I think he can add a real spark to the offense I think Josh Jacobs obviously is going to be that number one I think Emanuel Wilson can fill in now as the number two until Lloyd's ready to go and I think they overall make a pretty good Trio I do question pass Pro a little bit like Jacobs can do it I don't think there's a major concern there but if you don't have Jacobs then it becomes a little bit more interesting because Wilson and Lloyd both not great at it and you know now you can do some different things you can just put them out into the route and release them into the flat and if nobody goes with them you just release it out to them in the flat like we saw Pratt hit Wilson on that little uh oh it was actually in um it was in the The Joint practices with the Ravens uh I think or I think it was that or maybe was a pre I forget but either way he hit him in the flat nice easy play goes for a touch down great read you can do a little bit of that and try to fool the team and be like yep I'm going to pick you up with the Blitz and then slip out at the last moment if you've got a guy that's not as good at it but you still ideally like maybe a little bit more depth there from guys who can can pick up the blitz better but outside of that I think from a running standpoint they are going to be just fine uh glad goat goody saw the writing on the wall with Royce Newman no way we could afford his inevitable fouryear $200 million extension fair enough Preston uh so Ryan why not I just want to I know uh I want to get to some other ones here too but this is a good question why not cut Dylan instead of injured reserve when you have a player that's hurt and I talked about this with Tyler Davis as well just I I tweeted about it again today I think I talked about on the show yesterday when you have a player that's hurt that's a vested veteran you cannot just release them and you might say well what about waving them injured they're not subject to waivers so you can't wave them injury you could work out an injury settlement right now but usually those take time and on cutdown day when there's a billion things going on you don't have time to sit down with AJ Dylan and his agent or Tyler Davis and his agent and work out an injury resettlement right now that's not going to be in the cards that's going to have to wait for another day so you cannot wave him because he's not subject to waivers you can't wave him injured because he's not subject to waivers um you're obviously not going to trade him and you know nobody's going to be interested especially when he's hurt and so the only remaining option at that point is to place him on full injured reserve and then at some point start working on that injury settlement if he's not actually going to be hurt for the remainder of the season so that is why AJ Dylan is not cut because he does have an injury and you can't just cut him you got to figure out that settlement first so in the meantime you place him on IR maybe time for a new quarterback coach baby QB I got the best quarterback coach in the league I have H no concerns there um yeah so that's why I would just say that I think they they've got one of the best in Tom Clemens what else we got here think Dylan's career is over in next are tricky I hope not I don't want to speculate on it other than to say I hope he comes back in some capacity whether that's with Green Bay are another team he's got he should have a very long career ahead of him still he does not have a ton of wear and tear from a carry standpoint obviously being more of a number two running back majority of his career but you get two neck injuries and that stuff is scary so obviously first is is for AJ's health and then the second is hopefully he can bounce back at some point and get back out there playing if he wants to um but I I don't want to speculate on it are you surprised by the defensive line depth uh we talked about this a little bit Richard defensive tackle wise no I thought that was the easiest predict uh prediction to make with five defensive tackles making it as far as defensive ends go yeah definitely surprised there I I would have definitely I think I didn't I say on today's episode I'm like I wouldn't say it for sure but I'm like oh no maybe it was wide receiver it was wide receiver I was like if you had to say um whether it's five wide receivers or seven wide receivers I was gonna say I think it would go with five but I didn't go quite that far um but you know defensive ends um yeah I would have definitely guessed four before I would have guessed six I times over in fact I did guess four defensive ends and five was easily reasonable would not have been shocked if they kept Cox or Mosby but keeping both I definitely did not see that coming at all definitely gives them depth it's a premium position you can never have enough pass rushers through the course of the year so I definitely don't hate it but definitely a little bit surprised by it when will the Special Teams nightmares end be my guest you're you're you can come on Angry casual fan and talk about it as well as I can uh I have no idea I'm hoping this year but that's one of those that I will believe it when I see it because it has been a long stretch of really poor special teams play and hopefully this is the year where that nightmare ends just making sure I didn't miss any super chats here all right we think we're good uh pick up Vikings wave Lis former first- round safety doubt it I don't know if anyone's watched uh lisen he's had a really rough start to his career had injury problems that Vikings secondary is not super deep although they are pretty deep at safety at least they go three deep um at the top there but um no I would say they're going to go with their young guys there no questions about it I'd be pretty shocked if uh if Cen was in the conversation why not tanah Hill late to the to the I'm assuming you mean late to the chat I talked about this a little bit the other day and thanks for the Super Chat uh Super Chat Glenn the first first of all the easiest aspect of this is there's a decent chance that Ryan ttin Hill has no intention or desire to be a backup quarterback to anybody if he's the number one guy in the market where if a Jordan love goes down if a uh Brock pie goes down if a Dak Prescott goes down if anyone goes down for the year the first quarterback that a competitive team is going to call is Ryan tanel out in the free agent Market he's basically like the only legitimate guy that's available so he can wait until some team is seven and one and loses their quarterback for the remainder of the year and say yep I'll come and play for you and hopefully lead you to the playoffs and get that starting gig the rest of the year if I were him that's what I would do and then at that point some teams desperate so he can probably even milk more money out of them didn't have to go to Camp doesn't have to report doesn't have to choose his team now so if I'm Ryan tanhill I'm waiting I'm not doing it now and just signing up to be a backup I'm gonna wait until that starting job is very clear and open and then I'll go with and sign with the team then let's play Devil's Advocate though and say he was willing to sign it then it becomes like all right what is his asking price 8 mil a year six mil seven five let's say it's seven to eight million per year on a one-year deal all right the narrow line where that deal actually works for you is insanely thin if Jordan love goes down for the year Ryan tanhill is not saving your season he's just not it's not GNA happen so you're actually maybe picking up a couple wins that's just hurting your draft position and not developing Malik Willis in this situation like just go let Malik Willis have fun see if he develops if you lose games you lose games your your season's done if Jordan's done and if Jordan doesn't get hurt at all well then that's great but now you paid seven eight million on one year for Ryan tanhill that you didn't even need and you could have carried that over into next year and actually signed a significant free agent that would have actually helped your team with that money instead or this year use that money to try to sign somebody or get somebody at the trade deadline instead so that part of it doesn't make sense and then you get to the scenario of all right well what if it's like six games in the middle of the year and you need to go three and three four and two to make it work well he could help you in that scenario yeah but that's like the one scenario and if you get that scenario he actually has to lead you to a three and three or 4-2 start if he doesn't and he goes two and four or one and five or 0 and six then the8 million was a waste anyway and there's not a guarantee that tanah Hill actually performs better than Malik Willis and maybe yeah maybe tanah Hill goes four and two but maybe Malik Willis would have gone three and three anyway so the extremely narrow Gap that tanah Hill actually helps you um is is so thin and to pay 78 million whatever it is for the odds that that one scenario happens I probably wouldn't do it either and instead I'll go with Malik Willis and take my chances and hope in a four to six game stretch if you get that exact scenario that he can win you know 50% of those games and you can figure out a way to win with defense special teams running the football and maybe Malik Willis doing some fun stuff uh Lovin Willis is a fun quarterback room to watch win or lose yeah that I mean that's a nice thing about having a mobile athletic quarterback is he can make some athletic plays and that certainly can go a long way in uh in helping you out um at least make it a more watchable product at times uh love the channel thanks so much have to run but I'll watch the rest later go Paco appreciate that John all right any other big questions before I get out of here are you concerned with five quarterbacks not much depth um no I'm not I think first of all you have to remember they feel comtable putting Javon Bullard down in the slot so that actually acts kind of as a sixth Corner um you know if if you need an outside corner right you've got Jer you've got Valentine you have Stokes you have even Nixon they've put outside a little bit to to get him cross trained there you have Balentine so you have five guys right now that can play outside corner and you only need two spots and then in the slot I mean you could put Jer in the slot if you wanted but Nixon can play in the slot Balentine can play in in the slot Valentine might be able to a little bit but Javon Bullard can definitely play there as well so you have some depth there as well and then my guess is they probably get you know Robert relle if I remember I'd have to look at it again I think he was just flat waved I don't think he was waved with a um waved injured I'd have to relook at it but if that's the case I would very much expect him back on the practice squad and that will give you somebody that you could theoretically call up as well so no not not concerned at this point Ian thanks so much for that how excited are you for this new aggressive defensive unit Within new safeties and linebacker strength been a long time as a Packers fan saying this Ian I share your enthusiasm but I'm going to temper it and say I want to see it in action especially linebacker we're excited about this now but right now Edan Cooper Tyron Hopper are not involved really at least things can change but it seems like this is going to be McDuffy Eric Wilson and Quay Walker and Quay was here the last two years and had struggled McDuffy couldn't even get on the field for DeAndre Campbell and DeAndre Campbell struggled and McDuffy when he got out there was okay and then Eric Wilson couldn't even get on the field I'm excited the way that they're going to play I think Wilson McDuffy and Quay have all looked good in Camp but there are still a world in which this could be maybe not a strength to begin with until maybe Hopper and Cooper are a little bit more ready to take over at a couple of those positions so I'm cautiously optimistic I feel your enthusiasm I'm excited but my expectations are tempered and I do want to see exactly what this this team can do before we jump to any crazy conclusions of what they can ultimately be all right uh no Willis is not a taes mill he's so yeah I think the thing you have to recognize about tesm is he's a big dude right so he can take the pounding like he can you can do a lot of the the QB sneak stuff and like have him just run quarterback power and all those sort of things because he's big Malik's not big Malik is small he's fast he's athletic he's he's really really fun but he's not buil so you can't just do a lot of the stuff that New Orleans does with t Hill the other thing is you're not taking Jordan love off the field for any reason certainly not for Malik Willis to be a a run threat out on the field that that's just never that's a non-starter so you're not you're not taking Jordan love off the field so I don't think you can use him in that role but I also don't think that he's necessarily built for that role either and then of course like uh Tamm Hill can play some tight end you can play some running back he can play some fullback you're not going to see of that from Malle Willis uh new defensive scheme is going to fit nicely for these talents I do really agree with that and I do think that's the um the really nice thing about a lot of these players is I think Gary fits better Wyatt fits better LVN fits better I think all the linebackers fit better Stokes fits better jier fits better Valentine fits better like I think all of these guys fit better in this scheme than what they did in Joe Barry scheme a season ago Richard based on the initial 53 who are the core special teamers this season who will most likely be deactivated each game uh honestly Richard I would love to answer that but I'd have to look at it a little bit closer obviously I saw the initial cuts and everything and immediately came on so I'm gonna need a little bit more time to dissect that if I can I'll try to get to that on tomorrow's episode when I break everything down but for now um yeah I I'll have to kind of take a look a little bit more at the roster for that uh somewhat surprised about Anthony Johnson Jr happy for Zayn Anderson at the same time yeah I had Zayn on my 53 I had uh Anthony Johnson Jr on the 53 obviously they thought six safeties was a bit too much and I understand um not surprised that Zayn's on this roster though when you're when you're first team on almost every special teams's unit you're usually not going anywhere um and that's why I had Zay on my 53 and that ended up obviously coming to fruition at least for now who knows what will happen tomorrow all right friends that is going to do it for me for now I will obviously back tomorrow breaking everything down we went for about an hour here we had over 2,000 people in chat I appreciate you guys a ton thank you for all the super chats you're the absolute freaking best I will see you very soon we've got a lot to break down there'll be more stuff happening tomorrow I'll do everything I can to cover everything I possibly can in tomorrow's larger episode but until next time and as always go pack go
