well as NAACP image Award nominations for both Fox outstanding actor in a motion picture and gray outstanding directing in Emotion picture during a home invasion Clarence Derby murders the wife and daughter of engineer Clyde Shelton who is forced to watch prosecuting attorney Nick rice is unable to convict Darby due to mishandled evidence unwilling to risk lowering his high conviction rate he makes a deal with Darby he testifies against his accomplice Rupert Ames who only intended to steal from Clyde so he is convicted and sentenced to death while Darby pleads guilty to third deegree murder and receives a lighter sentence Clyde feels betrayed by Nick and the justice system 10 years later during am's execution via lethal injection he surprisingly dies in agonizing pain the police find the chemicals had been tampered with and evidence Left Behind implicates Darby an anonymous caller warns him law enforcement are on their way to arrest him following the caller's instructions Darby hijacks a police car forcing a loone officer to drive to a deserted Warehouse the officer is revealed to be Clyde the caller Darby attempts to shoot Clyde but instead the gun paralyzes Darby with tetronics and coated spikes Clyde then straps Darby to a table and makes medical preparations to prolong Darby's suffering recording himself slowly dismembering and eventually murdering Darby when Darby's remains are found evidence ties his death to Clyde Clyde willingly surrenders and goes to prison in prison Clyde Demands a new mattress in his cell in exchange for a confession Nick initially refuses but after learning that Clyde traumatized Nick's family with the video of Darby's murder district attorney Jonah canl orders Nick to make the deal in court Clyde represents himself and successfully argues he should be granted bail but instead berates the judge for accepting the legal precedent he cited believing the judge is too easily convinced and eager to release potential criminals Clyde is then denied bail and also jailed for contempt of court after giving Nick his confession Clyde demands an elaborate Steak lunch from Del Frisco and a music player be delivered to his cell by a specific time in exchange for the location of Darby's now missing lawyer Nick agrees though the lunch is delayed a few minutes courtesy of the warden's security measures once he has his meal Clyde provides the coordinates to the lawyer's location but Darby's lawyer still suffocates inside a box due to a Time mechanized device meanwhile Clyde kills his cellmate after sharing his meal forcing the warden to secure him in solitary confinement cantrol and Nick meet Bray a CIA contact who knows about Clyde's past employment with the agency Clyde's CIA employment consisted of eliminating nearly impossible targets they are warned Clyde can kill anyone anytime he wishes and that his imprisonment may be part of a bigger plan Bray finishes the meeting by suggesting to Nick and cantrol that their best option is to kill Clyde during a meeting with Nick and cantrol the judge is killed by an explosive hidden in her cell phone Clyde explains to Nick that the murders are not about revenge but the failures of the justice system Clyde demands his release and all charges drop to end the killings Nick takes precautionary measures instead moving his entire team to the to work throughout the night after Clyde's deadline passes without incident Nick releases his team while walking to his car a number of Nick's assistants are killed in car bombings including Nick's assistant Sarah Nick privately meets with Clyde beating and yelling at him in frustration that if they had tried to convict Ames and Darby they might have gone free Clyde counters that Nick is apathetic and that if he had at least tried but failed Clyde would have accepted it Nick demands an end to the killings But Clyde responds that he is just beginning while leaving Sarah's funeral cantrol is killed by a weaponized bomb disposal robot Nick prepares to resign but the irate mayor instead promotes Nick to acting district attorney and locks the city down Nick learns that Clyde owns a building near the prison a tunnel inside leads to a cash of guns disguises and other equipment below the solitary confinement cells with secret entrances to each cell Nick realizes that Clyde intentionally sought solitary confinement allowing him to leave the prison undetected and kill while misleading the police evidence points to Clyde's next Target City Hall where the mayor is holding an emergency meeting Nick and his men fail to find Clyde instead discovering a suitcase bomb planted in the room below the meeting Clyde returns to his cell and is surprised to find Nick waiting for him Clyde suggests another deal but an enlightened Nick replies that he no longer makes deals with murderers Nick tries to reason with Clyde But Clyde activates the suitcase bomb Nick immediately leaves locking Clyde's cell behind him while dunigan closes off the secret passage hearing the ringtone of the Detonator Clyde discovers the bomb Nick hid underneath his bed Clyde briefly smiles and returns to his bed looking at his daughter's bracelet as the bomb explodes the epilogue shows Nick and his wife watching their daughter perform on cello a classical music piece an Afterschool staged event that he previously had failed to find time to attend law abiding citizen is a Tau Thriller about a serial killer in Reverse he's already in prison when he commits all but one of his many murders and in solitary for most of that time so the story is a locked room mystery how does he set up such elaborate kills does he have an accomplice outside the walls or what Jamie Fox stars is Nick the Philadelphia district attorney and Gerald Butler is Clyde The ingenious killer Clyde Begins the film as a loving husband and father but then his wife and daughter are savagely murdered Nick AR range is a ple bargain one of the guilty men will be executed the other in return for his testimony will get a murder conviction but not death Clyde can't believe this he saw his family murdered both men are guilty on this everyone agrees why is one allowed to live because Nick explains the case isn't airtight without the testimony and if they lose both men walk free that's not good enough for CED who has 10 years to plot plan and simmer in his hatred that's the prologue I won't go into into detail about what happens next except to observe that Clyde's first killing involves his penetration of the death row execution chamber itself and that's before he's in prison is this guy Howdini or does he have Supernatural Powers as his methods are uncovered it's clear he's a non-magical human being but a clever one with remarkable resources so remarkable in fact that they fly in the face of Common Sense movie Super Villains have a way of correctly predicting what everyone will do and making their plans on that basis the explanation of Clyde's methods is preposterous but it comes late enough that F Gary gray the director is first able to generate considerable suspense and a sense of dread Fox and Butler make a well-matched pair in their Grim determination COI is underused as Nick's police partner we suspect he might be the accomplice given the law of economy of characters but perhaps he has a different role to play lesle bib works well as Nick's prosecutorial partner with Regina Hall as Nick's wife Annie Corley as the judge who experiences some surprises in her courtroom and the powerful Viola Davis as the city's mayor law-abiding citizen is one of those movies you like more at the time than in retrospect I mean come on you're thinking still there's something to be said for a movie you like well enough at the time Gerard Butler's big old grumpy face has loomed large on the sides of buses this week advertising Law Abiding Citizen his violent new thriller about revenge he really is a crosses two sticks as my mother would say Mr Butler has the look of a man who has found a penny and lost six p and on rising from the pavement with that dull and disappointing copper coin in his hand noticed his wife and child being brutally slain by scumbag criminals who will in all probability be cited by a politically correct legal system that cares more about statistics than Justice this is a different face from the one he uses for romcoms such as PS I Love You the dishy and warmly gruntled expression of a Dreamboat hunk in this film in which he spends much of his time banged up Butler rarely smiles and when he does he still looks a bit miffed like Hannibal lecor suspecting that one of his fava beans is off Butler is the producer and star of this extremely gory and stomach turning new picture which comes worryingly close to Revenge torture porn and in which we are invited to sympathize more than a bit with the torturer he plays Clyde Shelton whose nearest and dearest are blown away by two villains But Clyde is is told by the city's assistant prosecutor Nick rice played by Jamie Fox that only one bad guy will get the death penalty the other will get some sort of plea bargain and this swaggeringly unrepentant felon is out on the streets in a short while 10 years later Clyde begins a terrifying new campaign of revenge against anyone and everyone involved in his family's murder including the complacent Law Officers even the murderer getting the lethal injection isn't let off his poisons are tampered with to make things extra nasty the other murderer is sadistically hacked to Pieces while the proceedings are being videoed and the DVD is sent to Nick's home so that his daughter can see it oh Charming Clyde is incarcerated but manages to continue his serial killings from behind bars raising the awful possibility that someone in the system someone who sympathizes with his grievance is helping him what is such a narrative cheat is that Clyde is in fact not the ordinary bloke sold to us at the beginning of the film he turns out to be both a brilliant inventor and a ruthless professional super assassin once employed by the CIA how convenient the movie is trying to be both about an ordinary guy getting payback and about a chilling masterbrain outwitting the police at every turn it's silly and nasty at the same time not a good combination Nick's adorably talented little daughter finally Delights her fond parents with a cello recital apparently none the worse for that filmic ordeal I have to say that after this I didn't feel much like unaccompanied cello music law abiding ing citizen has all the trademarks of a great film a nonlinear plot plenty to say about the state of the world today some tough performances and explosive sequences best of all it blurs the line between good and evil so that you're never quite sure who you're supposed to root for which guy is the villain and which guy is the hero Gerard Butler stars as the ordinary man whose family is killed in a burglary gone wrong Butler then undergos a startling transformation as he sets up a campaign of revenge against all those who fa failed to bring the killers to Justice the film goes from there starting off dark and becoming increasingly more Bleak as the running time goes on it has plenty of incident to keep it running along and some great scenes Butler's manipulation of the prison regulations for instance or the way he manages to wage his Vendetta from the interior of his prison cell but along the way the film's sense of realism diminishes until we end up with a completely ludicrous event at the end which is designed to bring closure it's not on par with say Eagle Eye for suspension of disbelief but it's getting there it's just a shame as with some tighter writing this could have been a truly great movie it turns out to be an intriguing odity instead Butler is good as the bad guy effectively channeling some of that Leona's rage but as usual Jamie Fox is completely out of his depth as the lawyer he's a vacuum of talent an empty space in the middle of the movie surrounded by other better more seasoned performers it's a shame as the combination of rubbish actor and rubbish ending Scupper this movie's best intentions this movie really Takes the Cake it's focused on a father Clyde who gets beaten and his wife and daughter are killed by two Crooks however the crooks punishment was dimmed down because of a deal made by the lawyers jamy Fox 10 years later Clyde decides to take out the entire corrupt justice system this movie really keeps you on the edge of your seat and the main character Clyde really makes this movie Something memorable and just extraordinary you can compare Clyde to the Joker pretty much but in my opinion 10 times better Clyde devises sneaky and cunning Ways by taking down his victims and the whole sense on whether he is the hero or villain also adds to the excitement jimie FOX also does a great job playing his character a heroic yet corrupt lawyer there are a few scenes that will guarantee make you laugh and a few scenes that will pretty much tell you that Clyde is just one kick butt character no questions about it every scene you will be wondering what will happen next because you honestly won't know the movie has a few twists and turns and will always keep you guessing if you want to see something that is highly suspenseful will keep you on the edge of your seat and includes two very unique and questionable characters then you must see this movie Law Abiding Citizen will not disappoint law-abiding citizen starts out like a modern-day version of Death Wish spends a few moments aping the saw franchise then settles in as a cat and mouse crime drama centered around the theme that the American legal system seems designed as much to thwart justice as to enact it the movie stands firmly in the long tradition of wish fulfillment fantasies in which the victim of a broken legal system functioning as a stand in for an equally frustrated and helpless audience finally says enough is enough and takes matters into his own hands even going outside the limits of the law if that's what it takes to achieve justice as with the Charles Bronson character in Death Wish Gerard Butler's Clyde Shelton Witnesses his wife and daughter being brutally raped and murdered by a couple of armed Intruders when the worst of the perpetrators cops a plea and is back out on the streets after a mere 3 years behind bars Clyde is forced to take matters into his own hands but he isn't content merely to bring down the killers themselves but to systematically go after everyone in the legal system from strict constructionist judges to hamstrung attorneys who helped facilitate the Injustice that's where Nick rice well played by Jamie Fox comes in the decent but by the book prosecutor who helped set up the deal and has now along with everyone else involved with the case become a prime target for Clyde's take no prisoners reign of terror and retribution the one thing that distinguishes law-abiding citizen from similar films in the genre is that it's not afraid to have a deeply troubled possibly even psychotic character at its core for Clyde does not fit the mold of the typically lovable anti-hero the audience is in the early stages at least asked to root him on as a conventional angel of Retribution dispensing the justice that the court system saw fit to deny him but so much of what he winds up doing steps so far over the line that we eventually balk at his tactics it's this moral ambiguity that helps to mitigate some of the implausibility of Kurt wher's screenplay which often goes for effect at the expense of credibility indeed the movie's insistence at making him a sort of omnipotent omnipresent existential force of nature to be reckoned with takes the movie out of the realm of reality and cheapens some of what it is trying to do and in the process of reaching its climax the movie takes a plot turn so ludicrous in credibility defying that the whole thing pretty much crashes and burns at the end that being said Nick's interactions with Clyde are fun to watch and thanks to taught Direction by F Gary gray there are some moments of genuine suspense scattered along the way so if you can put your skepticism and critical thinking skills on hold for the duration you can have a pretty decent time with Law Abiding Citizen Law Abiding Citizen gross $ 73.4 million in the United States and Canada and $ 54.6 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $127.9 million the film took second place in its opening weekend with $21 million behind Where the Wild Things Are it went on to gross $16.6 million in total worldwide when Clyde was assaulted back in 1999 he was stabbed in his stomach later when the police capture him he is is not wearing a shirt but there's no sign of a scar in his abdomen when Clyde is making his order for the catered lunch he orders a 20 o porterhouse medium maybe a little bit charred when the food is delivered to his cell the waiter calls out each food and when referring to the Porter House he says medium rare Clyde clearly hears this and does not object the difference between the two temperatures to an obvious meat conosur would not be acceptable additionally the lunch delivered is not exactly as he ordered there is no butter squash or Palms frights after Clyde's murder of his cellmate with the steak bone the blood splatter on the back wall increases from the time he lies in his bunk to when the warden looks into the cell when Nick rice is flying in a helicopter to rescue Bill Reynolds the helicopter has an n94 PD call sign on the side of it and the pilot calls out on the radio n94 PD but when the copter lands it has an n95 PD call sign on its side when the car gets hit by the rocket in the cemetery the whole car gets catapulted into the air in the following scene the car is split in two the instant the neurotoxin hit Darby's system he would have fallen down due to being paralyzed he would not have been able to just stand there motionless as muscles are still used when standing still he also would not be shaking while lying on the table even when Clyde injected the adrenaline at the cemetery where the armed robot emits an EMP it knocks out the Convoy's Electronics yet moments later detective dunigan's radio can be heard the blast would also have disabled their radios during a lethal injection seene three plungers are seen being pressed by a machine to inject the drugs each and under 1 second the largest peripheral Venus catheters available have a maximum flow of about 350 milliliters per minute the displayed amount of liquids could never have been administered in that short time throughout the film Clyde is being held in a Maximum Security Prison complete with solitary confinement convicted inmates and a warden pre-trial suspects are held in a County Jail not a prison Clyde is arraigned in front of the same court of common pleas judge who sentenced Derby Clyde's initial arraignment and bail hearing would not take place in the court of common pleas in Pennsylvania it would actually take place in front of a local District Justice magistrate who would then schedule a preliminary hearing to determine if enough evidence existed to hold the case for trial in the court of common pleas furthermore this would all have taken place before he was ever committed to county jail when Darby is running across the roofs the path which he is taking is already shoveled however this could all have been set up in advance by Clyde whom we know to be a brilliant tactician even though a cellist would never touch the hair of the bow Denise is only a student still learning hence she may have simply forgotten when Nick rice is on his Mac the software he is shown using is Windows Vista not OSX all modern Macs can dual boot and run Windows natively so Rice's Mac running Vista is not an error the camera in the interrogation room cage does not have a cable in it however the camera could very well be broadcasting a wireless signal as any loose cable could be ctin plugged to break the signal or used as a weapon in the possession of a prisoner when you first see Darby on the table about to be tortured Clyde moves around the end of the table as he does he brushes up against Darby's foot and you can see the foot and end of the leg wobble revealing that is is made of rubber when Darby is running to the cop car about 20 minutes into the movie you can see exhaust from the police interceptor coming from the tail pipes but when he tells the cop to start the car he turns the ignition to start the motor when Clyde tosses the keys back into the trunk of the car that he borrowed from an officer he touches the trunk edge with his bare fingers which should have been caught by any investigation into an officer's kidnapping and leading them to him sooner than later as a suspect the CCTV camera and old CTC 5000 shown observing Clyde in the prison interview bird cage has no cable connected the only video output socket in a later scene of the same place the same type of camera shows a red lead stuck to the side of the camera in a small black box facing forward that camera's power lead is mounted on the rear panel assuming the movie takes place in 29 the seventh generation Honda Accord introduced in 23 scene behind Clyde as Clyde watches Nick shaking Darby's hand during the press conference in 1999 would not have existed the CCTV cameras used for monitor monitoring the prison interview bird cage arami ictc 5000 models dating from the late 60s through the the early 70s yet clearly the movie is set in the 21st century cameras are replaced at least every decade or so at the very most in the recital scenes it is obvious that the cello shown on screen is not making the music being heard at the first recital the Bowing does not match and at the second the finger placement is wrong when Clyde is eating the asparagus in his jail the crunching sounds are abnormally loud do not exactly match his biting motions and are obviously fied in the death penalty scene appears to take place at the Philadelphia prison however in the state of PA all executions take place at rock viw that prison is located in Central PA approximately 4 hours West of Philadelphia one scene shows a car with Nick going north on I95 over the Gerard Point bridge but he was previously in Center City which is well north of that point on the highway when the prison guards were scanning and checking Clyde's food they would have noticed the bone inside the stake and would have had to remove it because it can be considered a weapon it is never explained how Clyde could place a huge piece of military ordinance the robot gun in a public cemetery and have it go completely unnoticed in broad daylight until it begins firing a man of Shelton's caliber would not have opened his front door without first checking to see who rang the doorbell at the beginning of the movie Clyde steals a police officer 's uniform in order to trick Clarence Darby as evidenced by the lack of clothes on the actual officer when Clyde tosses him the keys this turned out to be unnecessary as later in the film it turns out Clyde owned several police uniforms in his Hideout by the prison there was no need to steal one Clyde states that Darby will only do 5 years for third deegree murder he's technically accurate that is the minimum sentence for a defendant with absolutely no criminal history however Darby already has at least one previous felony as revealed during the phone call to Darby helping him Escape Under Pennsylvania law a single felony in the defendant's criminal history would raise that to a 7 and 1/2 year minimum assuming that the judge gave them the seven 55-year minimum that would only make them eligible for parole after 7.5 years no guarantee that they'd be released Additionally the judge has the authority to exceed those and is not bound by any plea agreement when Nick and Clyde are in court before the judge Nick repeatedly refers to his government as the state Pennsylvania is a commonwealth and is referred to as such in court detective dunigan explains to Nick that the armed robot used API rounds armor piercing incend ammunition and explains their anti-tank rounds despite being a somewhat accurate description 5 caliber API ammunition would be unable to pierce modern-day tank armor as Clyde gives Nick and his legal team until 600 to release in the camera shows the clock turning to 600 for dramatic effect then seconds later when nothing has happened yet Sarah's watch is set 5 minutes fast Law Abiding Citizen is a thriller film directed by F Gary Gray featuring Gerard Butler and Jamie Fox the story revolves around Clyde Shelton Butler a grieving father and husband who seeks Justice after his family is brutally murdered the film starts with a chilling an emotional sequence in 1999 where Clyde's wife and daughter are killed during a home invasion the legal system led by district attorney Nick rice Fox strikes a deal with the murderer a low-level criminal named Darby to testify against his accomplices in exchange for a reduced sentence Darby ends up serving a short prison term while Clyde's family remains without Justice this deal is a central plot point and serves as the Catalyst for Clyde's subsequent actions years later Clyde emerges as a man consumed by Vengeance The Narrative shifts to Clyde's elaborate and meticulously planned retribution against the legal system that failed him Clyde having been deeply affected by the Justice system's failings begins a series of calculated attacks against those he holds responsible for his family's deaths his first Target is Darby who is released from prison as part of a plea deal Clyde kidnaps Darby and executes him in a gruesome manner setting off a chain of events that demonstrate his sophisticated and ruthless quest for vengeance Clyde's actions quickly draw the attention of the legal authorities particularly Nick rice who is now the lead prosecutor handling the case as Clyde's violent campaign unfolds he seems to possess an almost Supernatural ability to outmaneuver the police and the justice system this leads to a tense cat and mouse game between Clyde and Nick Clyde's attacks are not only violent but also symbolic targeting individuals who represent various flaws and Corruptions in the legal system this includes prison guards officials and even the criminal justice infrastructure itself a crucial plot twist occurs when Clyde reveals that his plan involves more than just personal Revenge he has engineered a series of high-profile attacks designed to expose systemic corruption and force the government to confront the flaws within its own justice system Clyde's methods become increasingly sophisticated utilizing technology and Insider knowledge to execute his plans his ultimate goal is to make a statement about the failur of justice and the moral compromise inherent in the legal process as the film progresses Nick rice becomes increasingly desperate to stop Clyde despite his best efforts Clyde's meticulously planned operations make it difficult for authorities to anticipate his next move Clyde's actions escalate to include a dramatic and dangerous plot to blow up a courthouse which he hopes will force the system to face its shortcomings directly this Final Act of terrorism underscores Clyde's belief that only through Extreme Measures can Justice be achieved in the climax of the film the tension reaches its peak when Nick discovers the full extent of Clyde's plan Clyde's ultimate scheme involves his own death as part of his Grand Design he has orchestrated his demise in a way that implicates the justice system demonstrating how deeply flawed and compromised it is Clyde's final Act is a chilling commentary on the nature of Justice the lengths to which one man will go to seek it and the moral ambiguities surrounding his actions the film concludes with a poignant resolution Nick rice having witnessed the full extent of Clyde's Vendetta is left grappling with the moral implications of Clyde's actions and the impact on his own sense of justice Clyde's final moments are both tragic and thought-provoking leaving viewers to contemplate the complex interplay between Justice Vengeance and the human cost of both law-abiding citizen is a 2009 Thriller directed by F Gary gray and written by Kurt Wimmer the film stars Gerard Butler as Clyde Shelton a man who seeks Justice after his family is brutally murdered and Jamie as Nick rice the prosecutor who negotiates a plea deal with the murderers the story explores themes of Justice revenge and the legal system Clyde Shelton's quest for vengeance begins when his wife and daughter are killed during a home invasion the criminal justice system represented by prosecutor Nick rice offers a plea deal to the perpetrators allowing one to testify against the other in exchange for a lighter sentence this deal infuriates Clyde who feels that justice has been betrayed as as Clyde spends years in prison for the crimes he committed during his quest for Revenge he meticulously plans his escape and further acts of Vengeance the film builds to a climax where Clyde's complex scheme to expose the flaws and corruption in the justice system is revealed Clyde's master plan Clyde Shelton's plan is more intricate and far-reaching than initially apparent throughout the film Clyde manipulates events from behind bars his scheme involves not only avenging his family's murder but also punishing those who he believed Lees have failed the system Clyde is revealed to be orchestrating a series of attacks to expose the corruption and weaknesses in the legal system the Final Act the climax of the film sees Clyde's final Act of Revenge unfolding the prison where Clyde is held is attacked leading to a significant Showdown Clyde's ultimate goal is to expose the corruption and failure of the justice system by targeting the key players involved in his case including Nick rice Clyde's plan involves a series of calculated attacks on VAR targets ultimately aiming to force a confrontation with Nick the confrontation the tension reaches its peak when Nick rice who has been attempting to stop Clyde's Rampage finds himself in a confrontation with Clyde Clyde reveals that his actions were not just about personal Revenge but also about highlighting the systemic failures in the justice system he sees himself as a catalyst for change albeit through extreme and violent measures the final twist the film's ending features a dramatic twist Clyde's actions are revealed to be part of a larger plan he has rigged a bomb in a coffin which he uses to leverage a final confrontation with Nick this twist shows Clyde's commitment to his cause and his willingness to go to any lengths to achieve his goals the bomb is a symbolic and literal representation of Clyde's Final Act of defiance against the justice system he believes has wronged him Nick's dilemma throughout the film Nick rice is portrayed as a complex character who is torn between his duty as a prosecutor and his personal sense of justice in the final scenes Nick faces a moral and ethical dilemma he must decide whether to stop Clyde or to allow him to continue his destructive path the confrontation tests Nick's values and forces him to confront the flaws in the system he represents resolution the resolution of the film is both dramatic and unsettling Clyde's ultimate fate is intertwined with the outcome of his plan the film concludes with a sense of ambiguity and moral complexity Clyde's actions have brought attention to the failings of the justice system but they have also resulted in significant collateral damage the ending raises questions about the nature of Justice the limits of Revenge and the consequences of taking the Law into one's own hands themes and Reflections the ending of Law Abiding Citizen serves as a reflection on the themes of justice and revenge Clyde Shelton's journey is portrayed as a critique of the legal system highlighting its imperfections and the ways in which it can fail individuals the film challenges viewers to to consider the moral implications of seeking revenge and the potential consequences of taking Extreme Measures to achieve Justice the ending of law-abiding citizen is a powerful and thought-provoking conclusion to the film it encapsulates the central themes of Justice Vengeance and the flaws in the legal system Clyde Shelton's final acts and the film's resolution provoke deep reflection on the nature of justice and the lengths to which individuals will go to seek it the film leaves viewers with a lasting impression of the complex I ities and moral ambiguities surrounding the pursuit of Justice law-abiding citizen reveals Clyde worked for the CIA for a time and is an expert in being able to engineer and commit elaborate murders rice comes to realize if Clyde was sent to solidarity confinement it must have been by his design he and detective dunan Kini con a discover Clyde owns a property near the prison he's being held in and find a tunnel that runs underneath it which he constructed himself over the years Clyde had been sneaking out to commit the murders personally before heading back to his cell rice and dunan learn he's going to Target City Hall and find a bomb he's planted there to Target the mayor law-abiding citizen ends with rice having turned the tables and meeting Clyde in his cell rice makes one last plea for Clyde to stop what he's doing and surrender insisting that if he dials the suitcase bomb he'll regret it for the rest of his life he also states he doesn't make deals with murderers anymore which Clyde is happy to hear he apologized Oles and dials the bomb only for rice to lock his cell and reveal Clyde is now locked inside with the bomb Clyde stares at a bracelet his daughter gave to him before her death as the bomb explodes and the movie ends with rice attending his own daughter's music law-abiding citizen is a 2009 American vigilante releases his team while walking to his car a number of Nick's assistants are killed in car bombings including Nick's assistant Sarah Nick privately meets with Clyde beating and yelling at him in frustration that if they had tried to convict Ames and Darby they might have gone free Clyde counters that Nick is apathetic and that if he had at least tried but failed Clyde would have accepted it Nick demands an end to the killings But Clyde responds that he is just beginning while leaving Sarah's funeral cantrol is killed by a weaponized bomb disposal robot Nick prepares to resign but the IRA mayor instead promotes Nick to acting district attorney and locks the city down Nick learns that Clyde owns a building near the prison a tunnel inside leads to a cash of guns disguises and other equipment below the solitary confinement cells with secret entrances to each cell Nick realizes that Clyde intentionally sought solitary confinement allowing him to leave the prison undetected and kill while misleading the police evidence points to Clyde's next Target City Hall where the mayor is holding an emergency meeting Nick and his men fail to find Clyde instead discovering a suitcase bomb planted in the room below the meeting Clyde returns to his cell and is surprised to find Nick waiting for him Clyde suggests another deal but an enlightened Nick replies that he no longer makes deals with murderers Nick tries to reason with Clyde But Clyde activates the suitcase bomb Nick immediately leaves locking Clyde's cell behind him while dunigan closes off the secret passage hearing the ringtone of the Detonator Clyde covers the bomb Nick hid underneath his bed Clyde briefly smiles and returns to his bed looking at his daughter's bracelet as the bomb explodes the epilogue shows Nick and his wife watching their daughter perform on cello a classical music piece an after school staged event that he previously had failed to find time to attend law-abiding citizen is a taught Thriller about a serial killer in Reverse he's already in prison when he commits all but one of his many murders and in solitary for most of that time so the story is a locked room mystery how does he set up such elaborate kills does he have an accomplice outside the walls or what Jamie Fox stars as Nick the Philadelphia district attorney and Gerald Butler is Clyde The ingenious killer Clyde Begins the film as a loving husband and father but then his wife and daughter are savagely murdered Nick arranges a plea bargain one of the guilty men will be executed the other in return for his testimony will get a murder conviction but not death Clyde can't believe this he saw his family murdered both men are guilty on this everyone agrees why is one allowed to live because Nick explains the case isn't airtight without the testimony and if they lose both men walk free that's not good enough for Clyde who has 10 years to plot plan and simmer in his hatred that's the prologue I won't go into detail about what happens next except to observe that Clyde's first killing involves his penetration of the death row execution chamber itself and that's before he's in prison is this guy Howdini or does he have Supernatural Powers as his methods are uncovered it's clear he's a non-magical human being but a clever one with remarkable resources so remarkable in fact that they fly in the face of Common Sense movie Super Villains have a way of correctly predicting what everyone will do and making their plans on that basis the explanation of Clyde's methods is preposterous but it comes late enough that F Gary gray the director is first able to generate considerable suspense and a sense of dread Fox and Butler make a well-matched pair in their Grim determination Co mini is underused as Nick's police partner we suspect he might be the accomplice given the law of economy of characters but perhaps he has a different role to play lesle bib works well as Nick's prosecutorial partner with Regina Hall as Nick's wife Annie Corley as the judge who experiences some surprises in her courtroom and the powerful Viola Davis as the city's mayor law-abiding citizen is one of those movies you like more at the time than in retrospect I mean come on you're thinking still there's something to be said for a movie you like well enough at the time Gerard Butler's big old grumpy face has loomed large on the sides of buses this week advertising law-abiding citizen his violent new thriller about revenge he really is as cross as two sticks as my mother would say Mr Butler has the look of a man who has found a penny and lost six and on rising from the pavement with that dull and disappointing copper coin in his hand noticed his wife and child being brutally slain by scumbag criminals who will in all probability be cited by a politically correct legal system that cares more about statistics than Justice this is a different face from the one he uses for romcoms such as PS I Love You the dishy and warmly gruntled expression of a dream booo hunk in this film in which he spends much of his time banged up Butler rarely smiles and when he does he still looks a bit miffed like Hannibal Lector suspecting that one of his fava beans is off Butler is the producer and star of this extremely gory and stomach turning new picture which comes worryingly close to Revenge torture porn and in which we are invited to sympathize more than a bit with the torturer he plays Clyde Shelton whose nearest and dearest are blown away by two villains But Clyde is told by the city's assistant prosecutor Nick rice played by Jamie Fox that only one bad guy will get the death penalty the other will get some sort of plea bargain and this swaggeringly unrepentant felon is out on the streets in a short while 10 years later Clyde begins a terrifying new campaign of revenge against anyone and everyone involved in his family's murder including the complacent Law Officers even the murderer getting the lethal injection isn't let off his poisons are tampered with to make things extra nasty the other murderer is sadistically hacked to Pieces while the proceedings are being videoed and the DVD is sent to Nick's home so that his daughter can see it oh Charming Clyde is incarcerated but manages to continue his serial killings from behind bars raising the awful possibility that someone in the system someone who sympathizes with his grievance is helping him what is such a narrative cheat is that Clyde is in fact not the ordinary bloke sold to us at the beginning of the film he turns out to be both a brilliant inventor and a ruthless professional super assassin once employed by the CIA how convenient the movie is trying to be both about an ordinary guy getting Payback and about a chilling masterbrain outwitting the police at every turn it's silly and nasty at the same time not a good combination Nick's adorably talented little daughter finally Delights her fond parents with a cello recital apparently none the worse for that filmic ordeal I have to say that after this I didn't feel much like unaccompanied cello music law-abiding citizen has all the trademarks of a great film a non-linear plot plenty to say about the state of the world today some tough performances and explosive sequences best of all it blurs the line between good and evil so that you're never quite sure who you're supposed to root for which guy is the villain and which guys the hero Gerard Butler stars as the ordinary man whose family is killed in a burglary gone wrong Butler then undergoes a startling transformation as he sets up a campaign of revenge against all those who failed to bring the killers to Justice the film goes from there starting off dark and becoming increasingly more Bleak as the running time goes on it has plenty of incidents to keep it running along and some great scenes Butler's manipulation of the prison regulations for instance or the way he manages to wage his Vendetta from the interior of his prison cell but along the way the film's sense of realism diminishes until we end up with a completely ludicrous event at the end which is designed to bring closure it's not on par with say Eagle Eye for suspension of disbelief but it's getting there it's just a shame as with some tighter writing this could have been a truly great movie it turns out to be an intriguing Oddity instead Butler is good as the bad guy effectively channeling some of that Leona's rage but as usual Jamie Fox is completely out of his depth as the lawyer he's a vacuum of talent an empty space in the middle of the movie surrounded by other better more season performers it's a shame as the combination of rubbish actor and rubbish ending Scupper this movie's best intentions this movie really Takes the Cake it's focused on a father Clyde who gets beaten and his wife and daughter are killed by two Crooks however the crooks punishment was dimmed down because of a deal made by the lawyers Jamie Fox 10 years later Clyde decides to take out the entire corrupt justice system this movie really keeps you on the edge of your seat and the main character Clyde really makes this movie Something memorable and just extraordinary you can compare Clyde to the Joker pretty much but in my opinion 10 times better Clyde devises sneaky and cunning Ways by taking down his victims and the whole sense on whether he he is the hero or villain also adds to the excitement Jamie Fox also does a great job playing his character a heroic yet corrupt lawyer there are a few scenes that will guaranteed make you laugh and a few scenes that will pretty much tell you that Clyde is just one kick butt character no questions about it every scene you will be wondering what will happen next because you honestly won't know the movie has a few twists and turns and will always keep you guessing if you want to see something that is highly suspenseful we'll keep you on the edge of your seat and includes two very unique and questionable characters then you must see this movie law-abiding citizen will not disappoint law-abiding citizen starts out like a modern-day version of Death Wish spends a few moments aping the saw franchise then settles in as a cat and mouse crime drama centered around the theme that the American legal system seems designed as much to thwart justice as to enact it the movie stands firmly in the long tradition of wish fulfillment fantasies in which the victim of a broken legal system functioning as a stand in for an equally frustrated and helpless audience finally says enough is enough and takes matters into his own hands even going outside the limits of the law if that's what it takes to achieve justice as with the Charles Bronson character in Death Wish Gerard Butler's Clyde Shelton Witnesses his wife and daughter being brutally raped and murdered by a couple of armed Intruders when the worst of the perpetrators cops a plea and is back out on the streets after a mere 3 years behind bars Clyde is forced to take matters into his own hands but he isn't content merely to bring down the killers themselves but to systematically go after everyone in the legal system from strict constructionist judges to hamstrung attorneys who helped facilitate the Injustice that's where Nick rice well played by Jamie Fox comes in the decent but by the book prosecutor who helped set up the deal and has now along with everyone else involved with the case become a prime target for Clyde's take no prisoners reign of terror and retribution the one thing that distinguishes law-abiding citizen from similar films in the genre is that it's not afraid to have it deeply troubled possibly even psychotic character at its core for Clyde does not fit the mold of the typically lovable anti-hero the audience is in the early stages at least asked to root him on as a conventional angel of Retribution dispensing the justice that the court system saw fit to deny him but so much of what he winds up doing steps so far over the line that we eventually balk at his tactics it's this moral ambiguity that helps to mitigate some of the implausibility of Kurt wher's screenplay which often goes for effect at the expense of credibility indeed the movie's insistence at making him a sort of omnipotent omnipresent existential force of nature to be reckoned with takes the movie out of the realm of reality and cheapens some of what it is trying to do and in the process of reaching its climax the movie takes a plot turns so ludicrous in credibility defying that the whole thing pretty much crashes and burns at the end that being said Nick's interactions with Clyde are fun to watch and thanks to taught Direction by F Gary gray there are some moments of genuine suspense scattered along the way so if you can put your skepticism and critical thinking skills on hold for the duration you can have a pretty decent time with Law Abiding Citizen Law Abiding Citizen gross $ 73.4 million in the United States and Canada and $ 54.6 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $27.90 million the film took second place in its opening weekend with $21 million behind Where the Wild Things Are it went on to gross $16.6 million in total worldwide when Clyde was assaulted back in 1999 he was stabbed in his stomach later when the police capture him he is not wearing a shirt but there's no sign of a scar in his abdomen when Clyde is making his order for the catered lunch he orders a 20 o Porter House medium maybe a little little bit charred when the food is delivered to his cell the waiter calls out each food and when referring to the Porter House he says medium rare Clyde clearly hears this and does not object the difference between the two temperatures to an obvious meat connoisseur would not be acceptable Additionally the lunch delivered is not exactly as he ordered there is no butter squash or Palms frights after Clyde's murder of his cellmate with the steak bone the blood splatter on the back wall increases from the time he lies in his bunk to when the warden looks into the cell when Nick rice is flying in a helicopter to rescue Bill Reynolds the helicopter has an n94 PD call sign on the side of it and the pilot calls out on the radio n94 PD but when the copter lands it has an n95 PD call sign on its side when the car gets hit by the rocket in the cemetery the whole car gets catapulted into the air in the following scene the car is split in two the instant the neurotoxin hit Darby's system he would have fallen down due to being paralyzed he would not have been able to just stand there motionless as muscles are still used when standing still he also would not be shaking while lying on the table even when Clyde injected the adrenaline at the cemetery where the armed robot emits an EMP it knocks out the convoys Electronics yet moments later detective dunigan's radio can be heard the blast would also have disabled their radios during a lethal injection seen three plungers are seen being pressed by a machine to inject the drugs each and under one second the largest peripheral Venus catheters available have a maximum flow of about 350 ml per minute the displayed amount of liquids could never have been administered in that short time throughout the film Clyde is being held in a Maximum Security Prison complete with solitary confinement convicted inmates and a warden pre-trial suspects are held in a County Jail not a prison Clyde is arraigned in front of the same court of common pleas judge who sentenced Darby Clyde's initial arraignment and bail hearing would not take place in the court of common pleas in Pennsylvania it would actually take place in front of a local District Justice magistrate who would then schedule a preliminary hearing to determine if enough evidence existed to hold the case for trial in the court of common pleas furthermore this would all have taken place before he was ever committed to County Jail when Darby is running across the roofs the path which he is taking is already shoveled however this could all have been set up in advance by Clyde whom we know to be a brilliant tactician even though a cellist would never touch the hair of the bow Denise is only a student still learning hence she may have simply forgotten when Nick rice is on his Mac the software he is shown using is Windows Vista not OS X all modern Macs can dual boot and run Windows natively so Rice's Mac running Vista is not an error the camera in the interrogation room cage does not have a cable in it however the camera could very well be broadcasting a wireless signal as any loose table could be Cuttin plugged to break the signal or used as a weapon in the possession of a prisoner when you first see Darby on the table about to be tortured Clyde moves around the end of the table as he does he brushes up against Darby's foot and you can see the foot and end of the leg wobble revealing that is is made of rubber when Darby is running to the cop car about 20 minutes into the movie you can see exhaust from the police interceptor coming from the tail pipes but when he tells the cop to start the car he turns the ignition to start the motor when Clyde tosses the keys back into the trunk of the car that he borrowed from an officer he touches the trunk edge with his bare fingers which should have been caught by any investigation into an officer's kidnapping and leading them to him sooner than later as a suspect the CCTV camera an old CTC 5000 shown observing Clyde in the prison interview bird cage has no cable connected the only video output socket in a later scene of the same place the same type of camera shows a red lead stuck to the side of the camera in a small black box facing forward that camera's power lead is mounted on the rear panel assuming the movie takes place in 29 the seventh generation Honda Accord introduced in 23 scene behind Clyde as Clyde watches Nick shaking Darby's hand during the press conference in 1999 would not have existed the CCTV cameras used for monitoring the prison interview bird cage are aami ictc 5,000 models dating from the late' 60s through the the early' 70s yet clearly the movie is set in the 21st century cameras are replaced at least every decade or so at the very most in the recital scenes it is obvious that the cello shown on screen is not making the music being heard at the first recital the Bowing does not match and at the second the finger placement is wrong when Clyde is eating the asparagus in his jail cell the crunching sounds are abnormally loud do not exactly match his biting motions and are obviously fied in the death penalty scene appears to take place at the the Philadelphia prison however in the state of PA all executions take place at rock viw that prison is located in Central PA approximately 4 hours West of Philadelphia one scene shows a car with Nick going north on I95 over the Gerard Point bridge but he was previously in Center City which is well north of that point on the highway when the prison guards were scanning and checking Clyde's food they would have noticed the bone inside the stake and would have had to remove it because it can be considered a weapon it is never explained how Clyde could place a huge piece of military ordinance the robot gun in a public cemetery and have it go completely unnoticed in broad daylight until it begins firing a man of Shelton's caliber would not have opened his front door without first checking to see who rang the doorbell at the beginning of the movie Clyde steals a police officer's uniform in order to trick Clarence Darby as evidenced by the lack of clothes on the actual officer when Clyde tosses him the keys this turned out to be unnecessary as later in the film it turns out Clyde owned several police uniforms in his Hideout by the prison there was no need to steal one Clyde states that Darby will only do 5 years for third degree murder he's technically accurate that is the minimum sentence for a defendant with absolutely no criminal history however Darby already has at least one previous felony as revealed during the phone call to Darby helping him Escape Under Pennsylvania law a single felony in the defendants criminal history would raise that to a s 7 and 1/2 year minimum assuming that the judge gave them the seven 55-year minimum that would only make them eligible for parole after 7.5 years no guarantee that they'd be released additionally the judge has the authority to exceed those and is not bound by any plea agreement when Nick and Clyde are in court before the judge Nick repeatedly refers to his government as the state Pennsylvania is a commonwealth and is referred to as such in court detective dunan explains to Nick that the armed robot used API rounds armor piercing incend ammunition and explains their anti-tank rounds despite being a somewhat accurate description5 caliber API ammunition would be unable to pierce modern-day tank armor as Clyde gives Nick and his legal team until 600 to release in the camera shows the clock turning to 600 for dramatic effect then seconds later when nothing is happened yet Sarah's watch is set 5 minutes fast law-abiding citizen is a thriller film directed by F Gary Gray featuring Gerard Butler and Jamie Fox the story revolves around Clyde Shelton Butler a grieving father and husband who seeks Justice after his family is brutally murdered the film starts with a chilling and emotional sequence in 1999 where Clyde's wife and daughter are killed during a home invasion the legal system led by district attorney Nick rice Fox strikes a deal with the murderer a low-level criminal named Darby to testify against his accomplices in exchange for a reduced sentence Darby ends up serving a short prison term while Clyde's family remains without Justice this deal is a central plot point and serves as the Catalyst for Clyde's subsequent actions years later Clyde emerges as a man consumed by Vengeance The Narrative shifts to Clyde's elaborate and meticulously planned retribution against the legal system that failed him Clyde having been deeply affected by the Justice system's failings begins a series of calculated attacks against those he holds responsible for his family's deaths his first Target is Darby who is released from prison as part of a plea deal Clyde kidnaps Darby and executes him in a gruesome manner setting off a chain of events that demonstrate his sophisticated and ruthless quest for vengeance Clyde's actions quickly draw the attention of the legal authorities particularly Nick rice who is now the lead prosecutor handling the case as Clyde's violent campaign unfolds he seems to possess an almost Supernatural ability to outmaneuver the police and the justice system this leads to a tense cat and mouse game between Clyde and Nick Clyde's attacks are not only violent but also symbolic targeting individuals who represent various flaws and Corruptions in the legal system this includes prison guards officials and even the criminal justice infrastructure itself a crucial plot twist occurs when Clyde reveals that his plan involves more than just personal Revenge he has engineered a series of high-profile attacks designed to expose systemic corruption and force the government to confront the flaws within its own justice system Clyde's methods become increasingly sophisticated utilizing technology and Insider knowledge to execute his plans his ultimate goal is to make a statement about the failures of justice and the moral compromise inherent in the legal process as the film progresses Nick rice becomes increasingly desperate to stop Clyde despite his best efforts Clyde's meticulously planned operations make it difficult for authorities to anticipate his next move Clyde's actions escalate to include a dramatic and dangerous plot to blow up a courthouse which he hopes will force the system to face its shortcomings directly this Final Act of terrorism underscores Clyde's belief that only through Extreme Measures can Justice be achieved in the climax of the film the tension reaches its peak when Nick discovers the full extent of Clyde's plan Clyde's ultimate scheme involves his own death as part of his Grand Design he has orchestrated his demise in a way that implic Ates the justice system demonstrating how deeply flawed and compromised it is Clyde's Final Act is a chilling commentary on the nature of Justice the lengths to which one man will go to seek it and the moral ambiguities surrounding his actions the film concludes with a poignant resolution Nick rice having witnessed the full extent of Clyde's Vendetta is left grappling with the moral implications of Clyde's actions and the impact on his own sense of justice Clyde's final moments are both tragic and thought-provoking leaving viewers to contemplate the complex interplay between Justice Vengeance and the human cost of both law-abiding citizen is a 2009 Thriller directed by F Gary gray and written by Kurt Wimmer the film stars Gerard Butler as Clyde Shelton a man who crimes he committed during his quest for Revenge he meticulously plans his escape and further acts of Vengeance the film builds to a climax where Clyde's complex scheme to expose the flaws and corruption in the justice system is revealed Clyde's master plan Clyde Shelton's plan is more intricate and far-reaching than initially apparent throughout the film Clyde manipulates events from behind bars his scheme involves not only avenging his family's murder but also punishing those who he believes have failed the system Clyde is revealed to be orchestrating a series of attacks to expose the corruption and weaknesses in the legal system the Final Act the climax of of the film sees Clyde's Final Act of Revenge unfolding the prison where Clyde is held is attacked leading to a plan he has rigged a bomb in a coffin which he uses to leverage a final confrontation with Nick this twist shows Clyde commitment to his cause and his willingness to go to any lengths to achieve his goals the bomb is a symbolic and literal representation of Clyde's final Act of defiance against the justice system he believes has wronged him Nick's dilemma throughout the film Nick rice is portrayed as a complex character who is torn between his duty as a prosecutor and his personal sense of justice in the final scenes Nick faces a moral and ethical dilemma he must decide whether to stop Clyde or to allow him to continue his destructive path the confrontation tests Nick's values and forces him to confront the flaws in the system he represents resolution the resolution of the film for the CIA for a time and is an expert in being able to engineer and commit elaborate murders rice comes to realize if Clyde was sent to solidarity confinement it must have been by his design he and detective dunan Kini con a discover Clyde owns a property near the prison he's being held in and find a tunnel that runs underneath it which he constructed himself over the years Clyde had been sneaking out to commit the murders personally before heading back to his cell rice and dunigan learn he's going to Target City Hall and find a bomb he's planted there to Target the mayor law-abiding unrepentant felon is out on the streets in a short while 10 years later Clyde begins a terrifying new campaign of revenge against anyone and everyone in involved in his family's murder including the complacent Law Officers even the murderer getting the lethal injection isn't let off his poisons are tampered with to make things extra nasty the other murderer is sadistically hacked to Pieces while the proceedings are being videoed and the DVD is sent to Nick's home so that his daughter can see it oh Charming Clyde is incarcerated but manages to continue his serial killings from behind bars raising the awful possibility that someone in the system someone who sympathizes with his grievance is helping him what is such a narrative cheat is that Clyde is in fact not the ordinary bloke sold to us at the beginning of the film he turns out to be both a brilliant inventor and a ruthless professional super assassin once employed by the CIA how convenient the movie is trying to be both about an ordinary guy getting payback and about a chilling masterbrain outwitting the police at every turn it's silly and nasty at the same time not a good combination Nick's adorably talented little daughter finally Delights her fond parents with a cello recital apparently none the worse for that filmic ordeal I have to say that after this I didn't feel much like unaccompanied cello music law-abiding citizen has all the trademarks of a great film a nonlinear plot plenty to say about the state of the world today some tough performances and explosive sequences best of all it blurs the line between good and evil so that you're never quite sure who you're supposed to root for which guy is the villain and which guy is the hero Gerard Butler stars as the ordinary man whose family is killed in a burglary gone wrong Butler then undergos a startling transformation as he sets up a campaign of revenge against all those who failed to bring the killers to Justice the film goes from there starting off dark and becoming increasingly more Bleak as the running time goes on it has plenty of incident to keep it running along and some great scenes Butler's manipulation of the prison regulations for instance or the way he manages to wage his Vendetta from the interior of his prison cell but along the way the film's sense of realism diminishes until we end up with a completely ludicrous event at the end which is designed to bring closure it's not on par with say Eagle Eye for suspension of disbelief but it's getting there it's just a shame as with some tighter writing this could have been a truly great movie it turns out to be an intriguing Oddity instead Butler is good as the bad guy effectively channeling some of that Leona's rage but as usual Jamie Fox is completely out of his depth as the lawyer he's a vacuum of talent an empty space in the middle of the movie surrounded by other better more seasoned performers it's a shame as the combination of rubbish actor and rubbish ending Scupper this movie's best intentions this movie really Takes the Cake it's focused on a father Clyde who gets beaten and his wife and daughter are killed by two Crooks however the Crook's punishment was dimmed down because of a deal made by the lawyers Jamie Fox 10 years later Clyde decides to take out the entire corrupt justice system this movie really keeps you on the edge of your seat and the main character Clyde really makes this movie Something memorable and just extraordinary you can compare Clyde to the Joker pretty much but in my opinion 10 times better Clyde devises sneaky and cunning Ways by taking down his victims and the whole sense on whether he is the hero or villain also adds to the excitement Jamie Fox also does a great job playing his character a heroic yet corrupt lawyer there are a few scenes that will guaranteed make you laugh and a few scenes that will pretty much tell you that Clyde is just one kick butt character no questions about it every scene you will be wondering what will happen next because you honestly won't know the movie has a few twists and turns and will always keep you guessing if you want to see something that is highly suspenseful will keep you on the edge of your seat and includes two very unique and questionable characters then you must see this movie law-abiding citizen will not disappoint law abiding citizen starts out like a modern-day version of Death Wish spends a few moments aping the saw franchise then settles in as a cat and mouse crime drama centered around the theme that the American legal system seems designed as much to thwart justice as to enact it the movie stands firmly in the long tradition of wish fulfillment fantasies in which the victim of a broken legal system functioning as a stand in for an equally frustrated and helpless audience finally says enough is enough and takes matters into his own hands even going out inside the limits of the law if that's what it takes to achieve justice as with the Charles Bronson character in Death Wish Gerard Butler's Clyde Shelton Witnesses his wife and daughter being brutally raped and murdered by a couple of armed Intruders when the worst of the perpetrators cops a plea and is back out on the streets after a mere 3 years behind bars Clyde is forced to take matters into his own hands but he isn't content merely to bring down the killers themselves but to systematically go after everyone in the legal system from strict constructionist judges to hamstrung attorneys who helped facilitate the Injustice that's where Nick rice well played by Jamie Fox comes in the decent but by the book prosecutor who helped set up the deal and has now along with everyone else involved with the case become a prime target for Clyde's take no prisoners reign of terror and retribution the one thing that distinguishes law-abiding citizen from similar films in the genre is that it's not afraid to have a deeply troubled possibly even psychotic character at its core for Clyde does not fit the mold of the typically lovable anti-hero the audience is in the early stages at least asked to root him on as a conventional angel of Retribution dispensing the justice that the court system saw fit to deny him but so much of what he winds up doing steps so far over the line that we eventually balk at his tactics it's this moral ambiguity that helps to mitigate some of the implausibility of Kurt wher's screenplay which often goes for effect at the expense of credibility indeed the movie's insistence at making him a sort of omnipotent omnipresent existential force of nature to be reckoned with takes the movie out of the realm of reality and cheapens some of what it is trying to do and in the process of reaching its climax the movie takes a plot turned so ludicrous and credibility defying that the whole thing pretty much crashes and burns at the end that being said Nick's interactions with Clyde are fun to watch and thanks to taught Direction by F Gary gray there are some moments of genuine suspense scattered along the way so if you can put your skepticism and critical thinking skills on hold for the duration you can have a pretty decent time with Law Abiding Citizen law-abiding citizen gross $ 73.4 million in the United States and Canada and 54.6 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $127.9 million the film took second place in its opening weekend with $21 million behind Where the Wild Things Are it went on to grow gross $16.6 million in total worldwide when Clyde was assaulted back in 1999 he was stabbed in his stomach later when the police capture him he is not wearing a shirt but there's no sign of a scar in his abdomen when Clyde is making his order for the catered lunch he orders a 20 o Porter House medium maybe a little bit charred when the food is delivered to his cell the waiter calls out each food and when referring to the Porter House he says medium rare Clyde clearly hears this and does not object the difference between the two temperatures to an obvious meat connoisseur would not be acceptable Additionally the lunch delivered is not exactly as he ordered there is no butter squash or Palms frights after Clyde's murder of his cellmate with the steak bone the blood splatter on the back wall increases from the time he lies in his bunk to when the warden looks into the cell when Nick rice is flying in a helicopter to rescue Bill Reynolds the helicopter has an n94 PD call sign on the side of it and the pilot calls out on the radio n94 PD but when the copter lands it has an n95 PD call sign on its side when the car gets hit by the rocket in the cemetery the whole car gets catapulted into the air in the following scene the car is split in two the instant the neurotoxin hit Darby system he would have fallen down due to being paralyzed he would not have been able to just stand there motionless as muscles are still used when standing still he also would not be shaking while lying on the table even when Clyde injected the adrenaline at the cemetery where the armed robot emits an amp it knocks out the Convoy's Electronics yet moments later detective dunigan's radio can be heard the blast would also have disabled their radios during a lethal injection seen three plungers are seen being pressed by a machine to inject the drugs each and under 1 second the largest peripheral Venus catheters available have a maximum flow of about 350 ml per minute the displayed amount of liquids could never have been administered in that short time throughout the film Clyde is being held in a Maximum Security Prison complete with solitary confinement convicted inmates and a warden pre-trial suspects are held in a County Jail not a prison Clyde is arraigned in front of the same court of common pleas judge who sentenced Derby Clyde's initial arrayment and bail hearing would not take place in the court of common pleas in Pennsylvania it would actually take place in front of a local District Justice magistrate who would then schedule a prelimin Ary hearing to determine if enough evidence existed to hold the case for trial in the court of common pleas furthermore this would all have taken place before he was ever committed to County Jail when Darby is running across the roofs the path which he is taking is already shoveled however this could all have been set up in advance by Clyde whom we know to be a brilliant tactician even though a cellist would never touch the hair of the bow Denise is only a student still learning hence she may have simply forgotten when Nick rice is on his Mac the software he is shown using is Windows Vista not OSX all modern Macs can dual boot and run Windows natively so Rice's Mac running Vista is not an error the camera in the interrogation room cage does not have a cable in it however the camera could very well be broadcasting a wireless signal as any loose cable could be cute and plugged to break the signal or used as a weapon in the possession of a prisoner when you first see Darby on the table about to be tortured Clyde moves around the end of the table table as he does he brushes up against Darby's foot and you can see the foot and end of the leg wobble revealing that is is made of rubber when Darby is running to the cop car about 20 minutes into the movie you can see exhaust from the police interceptor coming from the tail pipes but when he tells the cop to start the car he turns the ignition to start the motor when Clyde tosses the keys back into the trunk of the car that he borrowed from an officer he touches the trunk edge with his bare fingers which should have been caught by any investigation into an officer's kidnapping and leading them to him sooner than later as a suspect the CCTV camera and old CTC 5000 shown observing Clyde in the prison interview bird cage has no cable connected the only video output socket in a later scene of the same place the same type of camera shows a red lead stuck to the side of the camera in a small black box facing forward that camera's power lead is mounted on the rear panel assuming the movie takes place in 29 the seventh generation honda according introduced in 23 scene behind Clyde as Clyde watches Nick shaking Darby's hand during the press conference in 1999 would not have existed the CCTV cameras used for monitoring the prison interview bird cage are aami ictc 5000 models dating from the late 60s through the the early 70s yet clearly the movie is set in the 21st century cameras are replaced at least every decade or so at the very most in the recital scenes it is obvious that the cello shown on screen is not making the music being heard at the first recital the Bowing does not match and at the second the finger placement is wrong when Clyde is eating the asparagus in his jail cell the crunching sounds are abnormally loud do not exactly match his biting motions and are obviously fied in the death penalty scene appears to take place at the Philadelphia prison however in the state of PA all executions take place at Rock view that prison is located in Central PA approximately 4 hours west of Philadelphia one scene shows a car with Nick going north on I95 over the Gerard Point bridge but he was previously in Center City which is well north of that point on the highway when the prison guards were scanning and checking Clyde's food they would have noticed the bone inside the stake and would have had to remove it because it can be considered a weapon it is never explained how Clyde could place a huge piece of military ordinance the robot gun in a public cemetery and have it go completely unnoticed in broad daylight until it begins firing a man of Shelton's caliber would not have opened his front door without first checking to see who rang the doorbell at the beginning of the movie Clyde steals a police officer's uniform in order to trick Clarence Darby as evidenced by the lack of clothes on the actual officer when Clyde tosses him the keys this turned out to be unnecessary as later in the film it turns out Clyde owned several police uniforms in his Hideout by the prison there was no need to steal one Clyde states that Darby will only do 5 years for third degree murder he's technically accurate that is the minimum sentence for a defendant with absolutely no criminal history however Darby already has at least one previous felony as revealed during the phone call to Darby helping him Escape Under Pennsylvania law a single felony in the defendants criminal history would raise that to a 7 and 1/2 year minimum assuming that the judge gave them the seven 5 15-year minimum that would only make them eligible for parole after 7.5 years no guarantee that they'd be released Additionally the judge has the authority to exceed those and is not bound by any plea agreement when Nick and Clyde are in court before the judge Nick repeatedly refers to his government as the state Pennsylvania is a commonwealth and is referred to as such in court detective dunigan explains to Nick that the armed robot used API rounds armor piercing incendiary ammunition and explains their anti-tank rounds despite being a somewhat accurate description5 o caliber API ammunition would be unable to pierce modernday tank armor as Clyde gives Nick and his legal team until 600 to release in the camera shows the clock turning to 600 for dramatic effect then seconds later when nothing has happened yet Sarah's watch is set 5 minutes fast law-abiding citizen is a thriller film directed by F Gary Gray featuring Gerard Butler and Jamie Fox the story revolves around Clyde Shelton Butler a grieving father and husband who seek Justice after his family is brutally murdered the film starts with a chilling and emotional sequence in 1999 where Clyde's wife and daughter are killed during a home invasion the legal system led by district attorney Nick rice Fox strikes a deal with the murderer a lowlevel criminal named Darby to testify against his accomplices in exchange for a reduced sentence Darby ends up serving a short prison term while Clyde's family remains without Justice this deal is a central plot point and serves as the Catalyst for Clyde's subsequent actions years later Clyde emerges as a man consumed by Vengeance The Narrative shifts to Clyde's elaborate and meticulously planned retribution against the legal system that failed him Clyde having been deeply affected by the Justice system's failings begins a series of calculated attacks against those he holds responsible for his family's deaths his first Target is Darby who is released from prison as part of a plea deal Clyde kidnaps Darby and executes him in a gruesome manner setting off a chain of events that demonstrate his sophisticated and ruthless quest for vengeance Clyde's actions quickly draw the attention of the legal authorities particularly Nick rice who is now the lead prosecutor handling the case as Clyde's violent campaign unfolds he seems to possess an almost Supernatural ability to outmaneuver the police and the justice system this leads to a tense cat and mouse game between Clyde and Nick Clyde's attacks are not only violent but also symbolic targeting in individuals who represent various flaws and Corruptions in the legal system this includes prison guards officials and even the criminal justice infrastructure itself a crucial plot twist occurs when Clyde reveals that his plan involves more than just personal Revenge he has engineered a series of high-profile attacks designed to expose systemic corruption and forc the government to confront the flaws within its own justice system Clyde's methods become increasingly sophisticated utilizing technology and Insider knowled to
