for mland Stadium home to the East Carolina Pirates where the purple has engulfed this place as they are ready for a showdown there's just something about the night cap after a day of wall toall football it just seems this is when chaos ensues as we'll see a squad from the AAC the temple out squaring off with another team from the AAC the East Carolina pirates for EA Sports college football I'm Reese Davis joined here in the booth as always by David poock and Jesse Palmer guys let's tee this one up and the Pirates will put total leather and we'll get started and no chance at a return here they'll start this drive in their own 25 so the Temple Owls offense takes the field to start this game off here he comes and obviously defense is always going to be aware of a quarterback but boy he finds a way to put defenses on there feels all the time David I mean what can't he do he's got the weapons he's got the confidence he's got the experience Jesse these kind of guys are so hard to defend you're right they better be able to find a way to get pressure on him cuz if they don't this is going to be a long day those screen place you really want to sell it get it to your running back and get him to the second level get him running full head of steam on a safety on a linebacker he almost got going but just got tackled before he could really do any Dam secondary walks up on the line showing press coverage LS to throw on first down off the play fake and he needed a little bit wider field as that one falls out of bounds second down after that incompletion and guys if I'm on offense I am staying aggressive I know you didn't connect there but make sure you keep he's Off to the Races he's at the 10 touchdown ows and once he found daylight it was ktie Bar the Door baby you want to talk about a great way to start the game and set the tone early it's so nice to have a quarterback just get himself into the game get himself established you make a couple throws you lead your offense down the field you score right off the bat could not have been a better start for that QB on the move from inside is sp not a lot of space to be found good Hustle by the coverage team and they stop him at the 21 so East Carolina's offense will try to get something going with their first [Applause] possession offense getting set for first down [Applause] they'll try the Run he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple that linebacker was a heat seeking missile and the heat that he sought was the ball carrier yeah great job great fi linebackers are making all the calls on the defense and understanding when I need to come through that Gap and come through with bad intentions those guys are usually 245 lb a fe seeking missile and he'll step across the sidelines after making a good gain on that one they come to the line facing third and long from the 25 this time they'll go to the running game finally pulled down but not before moving the change for a first down I know this is an offensive line that has a ton of Pride and they want to come out each and every game and really impose their will on the D line they got just enough push there on that run play to pick off first I want to get my running backs the ball in space as much as possible sometimes it doesn't work in the running game but I can throw it to him I can try to create some space out wide dump him the football let him make some catches and see if I can't get some big plays on there to make the tackle but the big throw is good enough to give him a first down really nice job on that play quarterback and receiver being on the same page quarterback not telegraphing the throw and the receiver does a nice job finding the soft spot in the defense just settling down and giving his quarterback a nice taret at the right he make the stop but a good pick up there on first down well a nice Gainer on that running back screen and how about the offensive line getting downfield and getting blocks to really help out the back find some space to go to work he's dropped behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three this will be the seventh play of the drive and they need to convert third and six back to throw it's Terrell he took a hit as he threw it and couldn't deliver the football it's incomplete and fourth Down's coming and that's a play on third down this offense just has to do a better job protecting their quarterback give them a split second more time to complete that throw but they couldn't do it there quarterback reacting to what the D is showing on fourth down looking to pass and they get to him and sack the quarterback and they'll stop the drive on Downs here comes the offense on first down well that play never had a chance on fourth down they're trying to catch the defense off guard thrown for it but no protection quarterback didn't have an opportunity to step up and get rid of that football give the defense credit man tremendous aggression there on four Temple lines up quickly second and that would be the definition of first down success putting yourself in a good position it's second and inches I can do whatever I want next I can take a shot down the field I can run the football and get a new set of downs like nice first down execution he's right out of bounds but a big play on that one and it'll be a first down you know I really like how this offense uses the QB in the running game because he might not be the fastest quarterback in college football but he's got just enough that you have to respect got some room ENT to the goal line and he'll Sprint in for the score touchdown out and this offense is so difficult to stop especially in this area of the field because of this QB's running ability whether it's between the tackles or on the perimeter on designed QB runs they show you it right there about to kick it off after punching it in for the touchdown East Carolina Z and takes this from inside the five nice job executing all of the assignments as they put a stop to that return at the 22 East Carolina has it back and the purple pirate offense will go to work to say this has been a slow start is a bit of an understatement and they really need to get it going here Jesse that's right the opponent they're firing on all cylinders right out of the gate offensively for this unit they've been slow and struggling they need an explosive play to wake themselves up yeah and it's just the first quarter so it's not the end of the world you've seen slow starts but you got to continue to pick and pick and pick until you find that play or that scheme that you can use against this defense well the defense knew coming into this one Reese that this team was going to try to use their speed and take advantage of it and they did right there nice gain on the Run play to the right found plenty of Running Room in that defense they've got to find a way to get there make the tackle in the open field yeah and they got to do a good job with their eyes finding the football and theyve got to get a lot of bodies to this guy cuz he is fast keeping it on the ground with the single back a strong tackle and wrap up from the junior now that's what you're trying to do as a defense limit those damages when they run the football get them on the ground short gains to set your defense for positive situations down the road quarterback needs to make a better throw there incomplete inom [Music] third down conversions are a huge stat and this one would be a doozy if they can pull it off SPID wants to throw it's Terrell throws to the wide out makes the grab knocked down immediately but they couldn't stop it from getting the big Gainer to the 30 the Pirates are marching down the field off the play fake on first down to throw pass rush coming after the quarterback and they get him at the 32 on the second down coming up both teams made no secret they wanted to Target their big play receivers and they've done just that in the first Carolina Z now the challenge here they've taken a punch but they can't let it get out of hand as we start the second will start the quarter offense about to snap it on second down they'll Run play action gliding to the right still trying to make a play The Freshman just a little too much on that one there's a lot of QBs that when they get hit and when they get hurried and when they get pressured they become very average really nice job by the defense pressuring the [Applause] quarterback catch in the middle it's Harris and sure tackling there to keep him from getting to the first down marker now on fourth down here comes the field goal team and the holder will place it down on the left Hash a 47y try coming thought he had it and couldn't get it through the upright he missed it and after the Miss it's still a 14-point game Temple takes over and the owls send the offense back onto the field they'll throw it on first down makes a connection at the 40 there he goes and they were looking for a chunk play and they got it the explosive picks up more than 30 hey the defense knew coming into this one this guy was going to going to be a factor but they have done nothing to stop them they don't have any answers this guy already has over 100 yards receiving and we're not even done the half and you want to run the football I that's okay you'll take some of these but if they start to add them down the road obviously you might want to think about airing it out a little bit Smith takes the hand off what a Nifty run there to pick up the first down and the owls headed quickly to the line and that's good enough for a First Defense showing plenty of pre-nap movement of their own trying the run it's Smith got some room headed to the goal line touchdown Tempo and they add six more to the board with that trip to the house they've extended the lead and taken control here in week nine they'll try to attack one more on their follow the blockers the offensive line will take you to the Hallelujah land and I tell you what most of the time Reese it requires a little bit of skill to find that hole and you know Slither through a little crack that was not a crack that was wide open didn't take a lot of vision cuz the blocking was outstanding he was hoping for something a little more Dynamic but they get him on the ground at the 20 East Carolina sending the offense back to work they're down down by 21 points but you get a touchdown here and you do at least apply a little game pressure Jesse it's true I think for them to get back in this one at this point now they need the quarterback to play his best football he's going to have to be good really pre- snap David making sure they're in the right looks and he's got to be really good with this decision he's got to be dowed in because defensively you're giving up points so it's not like you have the luxury of your defense playing great the offense is going to have to score and score pretty dang quickly good job running tough and behind his pads as he gets up to the 38 yd line I know that wasn't a big huge play and everybody's not excited the fans aren't going crazy but those are the plays that in the fourth quarter matter a lot again making you tackle my back making you feel the physicality of the football game throughout so you get tired and get BN down in the as they come to the line on Third and short from the 43 I wonder if they already know they'll go for it if they don't make it here that'll be enough for the first down and they'll mark at the 48 and the Pirates come to the line with a new set of downs got him looking run he wants to throw and this will be incomplete a big hit there forces second down you know it's difficult for qvs sometimes when you're throwing to your running backs because they're not receivers you really got to be perfect with the ball placement you got to make that a catchable throw a little bit too tough for the RB on that one he's got his this time he almost picked up the first down on that one but he'll be just a little bit short they'll try to move the chains on the ground now they're really starting to threaten as they pick up the first down at the 34 yd line offenses that are great on third Downs what do they do most of the time they keep it in manageable situations that they're not predictable not just dropping back to pass they do here on Third and short they convert this offense has been so efficient on third Downs all throughout this season got six on first down now a lot of options on second and four on the move it's Terell fires deep toward the end zone and this is dropped incomplete pass he had a huge gain in his fingers and he couldn't hold on they missed a field goal on that last drive but here on third down down they can't afford for this possession to come up empty from the gun they'll try to impose their running game he'll come through on third Downs he's got enough and they'll mark it at the [Music] 23 going up top on first down stepping to the right couldn't find anybody to throw to he'll just toss it away it'll be second down good decision by the QB you're outside the pocket you're trying to find an open Target no one's open throw it away and Live to play another day on second down he'll try to make the connection caught over the middle it's Harris they get him down after he makes the catch the Pirates in the hurry up on Third and long trying to have a big completion here and he is not going to get there as the defense gets him on the ground I'm out call by the defense it's their first of the half as they'll make some adjustments the offense failed to convert on fourth down earlier but that didn't change their thinking here go a timeout is called as this offense tries to find a way to get more points on the board before the half [Applause] despite failing earlier on fourth down they will try again [Applause] here he'll try to throw and pick up the first down he's all the way down to the three and Electric Run has him set up and this is a really important series of plays a chance to cut into the lead just before halftime well Jet Sweep pass into the house touchdown ECU man nice job getting the passing game going this is big man going to the half and listen I know you're trailing but building some momentum maybe this second half we can keep airing the football out cutting into this deficit and who knows what the heck will happen [Music] and now they'll empty the back field for the two-point try tuna Terri Terrier looking downfield it's Terrell escapes the pressure to his right he makes his way into the end zone for the two and now they Trail by just 13 they held the ball for 15 plays on that touchdown Drive kick it away he'll bring it out just trucks through it he stopped short of the 20 at the 19 and probably wishes he' just taken the Touchback this drive will start from the 19 yd line he'll come out out throwing on first down quickly complete they make the stop but this passing game does some damage and they move the sticks with the first down here's this offense with a fresh set of downs motion from the offense looking to go up top on first down and it's incomplete if you're going to take a hit like that you might as well hang on to the ball and the big tight end a lot of times that's a bigger stri Zone a bigger dude and you could tell they put the hit on him and that ball came out and it came to the turf nice job playing and the ball is intercepted bringing it back the 10 touchdown Pirates what a great play by the defense and paying it off with the interception return the DB saw it he thought don't drop it don't drop it then thought don't get caught don't get caught and he didn't the pick hey these guys can play offense too now look at this I showed you I can be a wide receiver coach might split him out at wide receiver next week after making that big play but defense great job making the interception and you're right doing something with it don't just slide down don't be content take that thing all the way back brother P unit on the field extra point and it's up and good as they draw Just a Touch closer so they got the touchdown now going to put it in the hands of their defense to finish off this half fielded In The End Zone it's Collins he's brought down at the 16 would have been much better off to take the touch back Temple takes over and the offense will return to the field now you find out just how much of a gunslinger you are will you roll the dice here late in the half David and you know the defense is going to be really really and more yards after contact and they'll do more than move the chains they'll move that thing more than 30 yds down the field before he's finally stopped just a few seconds remaining here as they try to put something up before halftime they'll throw it on first down that's it Fly he's got it he's run out of bounds but not before turning in a big pick up and moving the sticks for a first down new set of downs after that completion to the air it's Simon release to the back on target he's there to make the stop but the damage has been done as they pick up the first down on the throwing and catch they'll use a timeout right before halftime maybe time for one or two more plays timeout Temple they'll will play it safe and try for three and he'll kick for the three from 36 yds out in the right hatch splits the upright it's good that late in the half field goal always gives you a little boost going to the locker room and they'll need to finish off these final few seconds and not allow them to answer that ball scoots through the back of the end zone it'll be a Touchback [Music] they'll have just enough time to get one more snap before the half quarterback checking the play We comes out throwing on first down moving out of the pocket he'll pull it down and run at the 45 on it way he will step out of bounds but not before the big pick up and a first down for this offense at the end of the second quarter that means it's time to join Kevin in our halftime update guys one of the best atmospheres in football and we've got a fun one from Greenville and we have to start this halftime breakdown by addressing the play of this Elite wide receiver this is clearly a young man who once he's finish playing on Saturdays he's going to be playing on Sundays the kid has different gears he has a knack for finding gaps in the defense and I can't remember a college player with that kind of catch radius and with that let's send it back to the fellas at dowy fckin [Applause] Stadium thanks for that breakdown [Music] Kevin Temple will try to boot this one deep to get the second half underway he'll bring it out it's right not nearly as much as he'd hoped when he brought it out of the end zone he'll be stopped at the 15 East Carolina has it back in the purple pirate offense will go to work down two possessions to start this third quarter they'd love to build some early momentum you ain't lying cuz you only got so many possessions here in the second half so now you're down I got to maximize every single one put your best plays together start this drive off on a good note yeah it starts right here obviously you can't get it all back on this drive but you can create that momentum you can create something special and some energy but it's going to start with this offense here executing at a high level they'll give it to the back yes the nose of the ball to the 25 give him one and that was a nice second down run it's setting up third and inches and now it's physical time right like they know you might run the football you know you probably want to run the football how can you be more physical sometimes bring some extra bodies some extra tight ends in go to that play that you know is your short yardage play they'll move those chains getting it out to the 29 yd line and trying to get this drive rolling and the Pirates have it with a first and 10 get get he's going to pass moving keeping the eyes down field he's got him wide open and he's out of bounds after the nice gain and maybe that is finally the spark to get this passing game going ree you and I were talking about this before the game how is this defense going to be able to deal with all the speed they have offensively you saw them just rip off a big play and Jesse now their head spinning just a little bit give up a big chunk play and it's right back at him and with not much doing downfield he found his parents open in the stands and threw it to them after misfiring it's second down quarterback making adjustments with his receivers to the air it's Terrell it's complete on the right side he knew exactly where he wanted to go with that one and they've got enough for the first down that big pick up on what they call the drag route but if you hit it on time you can hit the turbo boosters and you've got to be accurate on the throw too re nice job by the QB there putting it out in front of his receiver to make an easy catch and then Advance after picking up a couple it's second and eight he's looking to throw they're trying to get to him what a nice job by the defense stringing that out and forcing him out of bounds he got nothing yeah I think that's nice discipline by this defense doing a good job playing inside out using the sideline to their advantage kind of stringing it out stringing it out not giving up yards this is a really good job by the defense playing fast and playing smart and they knock him down but he got past the line the game really nice job there is the quarterback reading coverage he knew exactly where to go with the football and at what exact time time the timing could not have been better they get the completion on third down setting up first and goal they'll dial up the run on first and goal they make the stop but there is a flag on the field we'll see what that's all about holding just an obvious holding call there and one that just kills an offense's momentum the Pirates trying to pay off the threat on first and goal looking for space to the left got enough space touchdown East Carolina a Lazarus likee comeback is underway you know what methusa lived 969 years he was born and died in the amount of time it took them to walk it down the field and score that touchdown that's just so frustrating play after play after play you line up you try to do your assignment and you fail and they cap off with a touchdown oh Methuselah on to attempt the try kicker on for the extra point and with the extra point every little bit count as they get closer let's go to the studio now and check in with Kevin Connor Kevin what do you got two very different emotions inside the locker rooms of these teams who did battle today hand stand handled its business today away from home what a thorough beat down and what Poise this generally young team show I think even other coaches will point to this one as what's possible it's one game you don't want to react too much either way but I think both teams will leave this one with some things to work on moving forward yeah how about that sounds as if they had a good ball game there Kevin thanks for the update just gets it to the 28 pick up of one Temple lines up quickly trying to impose their will with the run good solid determined run there they'll Mark him down at the 27 they'll try to move the chains on Third and short from the [Music] 27 movement from the linebackers trying to mess with the offensive Line's assignments still running at the 40 bulldozes him and there they go again another huge gain on the ground they'll line up right at the 48 yard line on First and 10 he might not be the fastest runner that doesn't mean he is a reluctant Runner it worked out well there and I like that because I need a running threat from whoever's back there you got to be willing to tuck the football take off and go chew up yardage otherwise it makes it very predictable and very easy for a defense if you're not willing to do that it's a nice job by the defense turning the page just gave up an explosive play now you got to come right back with Tempo and a nice job in the back end covering to force that incompletion they'll give him four on that one it's third and six quick Tempo here for the [Music] offense third the back goes in motion looking to throw it's Simon couldn't find a man and just had to throw it away to avoid an negative play Tempo lining up to pun it away he ought to be able to use his first punt to pin him deep he gets the first one off and he was busier than he hoped in that loss last week being called on five times East Carolina sending the offense back to work they put it in the end zone the last time they had it and now an opportunity to really take control of this game you can feel the momentum shifting if they were able to take the football here drive it down the field and score again David they would have all of that momentum on their side and there's nothing about momentum that you can quantify like I I don't understand it but once it gets going in One Direction a lot of times it's so hard to swing it back the other direction the momentum is real and they got it got it in the middle it's Harris they're able to get him stopped just shy of the first down marker time winding down in the quarter as they come to the line they'll stick to the ground looking for the marker and he's got enough for a first down now to see if they have enough time to snap it again here in the third well I think this running back has proved in this game here tonight that he can be counted on and relied on right in a big moment right here late in the game when they need to run the ball to ice this thing he's able to [Applause] deliver one more period to go to see who can make the winning plays and come home with the victory back ated to open the quarter with this first down play 29 might as well give it to him again got the first down in more and he won't quite get there before after that pick up just a few inches to go for the first an array of possibilities here to the ground with the back and they'll move the chains and get it to the 47 yd line you know they Pride themselves on being physical at the point of attack dominating at the line of scrimmage nice job there picking up the first down takes a hand off it's Harris they finally get him on the ground with the big running play moves to change for the first down and the Pirates come to the line with a fresh set of downs they will test the right side gets it past the marker finally run out of bounds but he has this offense Bing with a first [Music] down they're looking for an advantage in the running game to the right gets it inside the 25 down to the 22 yd line with a pickup of four solid pick up of four on first down it's second and six 42 sper softened him up with the run now to throw he's brought down but not before he turned that into a positive play and picked up a few on the Run well you're making a positive out of a negative and that time quarterback nice job buying time he's trying to throw the football downfield nothing there so instead of throwing it away getting the incomplete just get what you can get and make this next down more manageable looks as if we have an injury on that last play and we'll take a break to check him out on the ready long Drive continues as the offense keeps working the ball down the field off play action on first down feeling some heat and the quarterback bought a little time but actually bought a lot of time but not enough time the defense gets to him how about this defense coming out aggressive on first down they're in the Red Zone they're like no no no we're going to take the fight to you now setting up a second down and long and putting them in a great position to be successful now facing some adversity on this drive after the loss of four it's second and 14 looking to pass it's Terrell trying to get to him and he got smacked just as he released the pass it's incomplete and this offense has gotten off to a good start on third down but this is a different deal on Third and long looking to throw and he needs a bunch quarterback feeling the pressure and down he goes at the 22 and giving up three sacks a week ago now you've already given up four sacks they got to find a way to protect their quarterback give them a little bit more time it's good kick is East Carolina 25 2 after putting three on the board the kickoff unit ready to go from a couple of yards deep he'll bring it out and the returner is stopped Temple takes over and the owl send the offense back onto the field that last Drive fizzled out Jesse they had to punt it yeah they did and David they're just going to have to do a better job this time around erasing the mental mistakes and just trying to solve the defensive riddle understanding what they're trying to do to you and attack them the give to the back and how about that interior defense stuffing the run for nothing second down here and maybe they've got time to get one more snap off before the two minute warning we've reached the two-minute warning and the defense needs to come up with a stop to close this thing out okay this offense has a second down play back to pass it's Simon fires it beautifully in on the Crosser to the 43 yd line and a first down for this offense fresh set of downs after the completion wants to throw on first down excellent coverage and good use of the hands to knock it away after the misconnection it's second down he's looking to throw he's right on target I think in this situation two minutes trailing late I think you got to be thrown to the sticks every time I don't know if these short completions are going to get it done you're just not going to have enough time to get down the field so from a play calling standpoint I think you want to think about being a little bit more aggressive takes it from the gun on third down snagged in the middle it's Clark and they reacted well to the completion but it was too late to keep them from getting the first down first down for the offense wants to throw on first down catch in the middle it's Stewart and he was loose and in the open field and on his way a tremendous pick up on that one the owls have it with a first and 10 they're looking to pass from the Red Zone grabbed over the middle it's Adams they make the stop right there good pickup it's still short of the first down defense calls a quick timeout there perhaps a little confusion about what call they were in we he'll just keep slinging it and that's going to fall to the ground a incomplete that was a physical matchup there third down coming they'd love to pick up this third down and get a fresh set with first and goal from the gun they'll try the middle and he's knocked down but not before moving the chain quick timeout call by the offense after the play trying to preserve every minute possible and guys a perfect opportunity here to take the lead late scanning the field it's Simon and he was shooting for the End Zone there and they couldn't make the completion they'll give it another shot on second and goal from the four here we go defense dropping into soft coverage they get him on the ground at the three yd line but this defense is taking some punches referee signals timeout it's the defense wanting to make sure that they have everything just right with a big play coming if they can pay off this third and goal with a touchdown it might be getting a little tough to swallow over there on the other sideline from the gun wants to pass into the end zone and caught they have the lead with the touchdown man this game has been incredible to watch and the offense comes through late in the game takes the lead what a clutch drive by this offense now I'm looking at you defense we got the lead late in the game I need you to go put this thing on ice and winning for couldn't make his way in the two-point conversion fails and we still have a five-point game here in the fourth the kickoff bounces through the end zone they'll bring it out to the 25 East Carolina has it back and the purple pirate offense will go to work there's plenty of time to work with here but they have to be highly efficient in their attack Jesse so it comes down with the and he can't get it off taken down what a huge play this late in the game they immediately call timeout trying to preserve every second they can to try to rally here late got to get everybody lined up quickly time winding away and they've got to push the ball down the field still moving to his right trying to make a big play nothing to do with the football and he just throws it away it'll be third down well this offense is up against it here trailing late in the game the defense knows they're going to throw the football first down they get sacked second down incompletion there's no mystery What's Happening Here quarterback's just going to have to make a play on third down he's got an open man he's R out of bounds but a big play on that one and it'll be a first down no time to waste here they've got to get set and pick up chunk yardage trying to find his man on first down and the DB forcing the incomplete pass with the deflection man you know the defensive coordinator on that play was holding his breath because in the fourth quarter you got one of the fastest players in the game going deep on you and that's going to be a helmet sticker for somebody like forcing an incompletion against that guy that's incredible he scrambled for and got a few and turned that into a positive play the Pirates moving quickly to the line looking to throw it's Terrell it's complete he's run out of bounds but not before turning in a big pick up and moving the sticks for a first down here's this offense with a fresh set of downs to the air on first down try to make magic on the scramble at the 20 he's got space and that is how we will wrap this one up you know there's no real reason to panic but if you think about it when does panicking ever really Happ but certainly this was a bitterly disappointing outcome and you can look at a lot of different statistics and I know we tend to over complicate college football these days but guys at the end of the day it comes down to two very simple things you can't turn the ball over and you can't have penalties you do those things David and it'll be beat you every time yeah that's the difference between winning and losing it's the small things but find those things that you need to improve on keep working on them keep developing those things you do well dude let's do those let's do more of those things more consistently so
