it's a NASCAR Labor Day weekend tradition historic Darlington Raceway provides one of the biggest challenges of the season and for the NASCAR xinity series with just four races left in the regular season time is running out to make the playoffs welcome to countdown to green from Darlington South Carolina today the stars of the exfinity series like Justin algy will have their hands full with one of the most stacked fields of the year as Cup series stars like Chase Elliott and Joey loano make a rare Saturday appearance it's going to be amazing it is a stacked field for sure but you look at this in the history of this race 36 winners in the xinity race 26 of them had either won a cup race or went on to be Cup winners after winning here the peacock bit box located right in the middle of Pit Road along with the voice you just heard Kyle Petty and the Hall of Famer Del Jarrett I'm Marty Snider you know DJ Not only Lano and Elliot in the field but there's a lot of Cup series drivers in the field for the Xfinity Series race today so what's the advantage for a cup driver to be in the race this afternoon well it's a difficult racetrack but it's also a rhythm Racetrack and the drivers don't have a lot of practice time they want to get some of that you know some of it is also hoping that maybe they will find some more grip than what was here earlier this year probably not going to happen I think one of the biggest things though how does this track change throughout the race and as they move around and the other thing is right after cautions where all the rubber is picked up how much grip can they expect when they go back tomorrow night during the race yeah and I think it's a Prestige race when you have that Darlington trophy setting on your C setting in your to trophy case that's a big deal Xfinity cup it doesn't make any difference boy Kyle Xfinity series races at Darlington lately have delivered some highlight moments why does this track lend itself to finishes like this because it's hard to get two cars to go side by side on a one Grove Racetrack and that's how simple and what I mean by that when we get to the end of the race when you get to this point in the race it's all take and no give you got to take you got to take you got to take and that's what we see in these highlights here people taking that last six Ines you got to make that happen for yourself yeah and the leader is trying not to mess up to give that opening for the driver in second and the driver in second is going to overdrive it and that's why we see great finishes and sometimes a lot of contact so DJ we mentioned four races left in the regular season for the Xfinity series unfortunately Samy Smith keeps going the wrong way yeah it's certainly not being what we expected uh from this driver and this team through here they still have themselves in a position that they can make the playoffs going to have to write the ship not sure it's going to start here today but as I look at the schedule coming up Atlanta and Bristol for him win opportunities I believe the playoff standings were set up by a crazy Friday Night Under The Lights in Daytona recking in front here he's going to come back across the track here yeah buddy make it 12 just got turned around we just got turned around hold on to it buddy it's pretty killed guys they don't look good 48 is clear he is clear he is clear all right hold on to it what was AJ doing did I do anything wrong there is he okay I just had a run and I had to go and I felt like it was a run I had to take caution out that'll be it right there man conratulations oh yeah boy Parker clicker man coming off his best finish of the year a third at Daytona I know you were really upset that wasn't a win so how do you shake it off and focus on Darlington a track that Demands a lot from drivers well Kim I think it was a good performance though with our backs kind against the wall after the penalty where we were points wise to go into a place like Daytona and to put on the performance we did I think speaks volumes of what you know we were able to accomplish under a lot of pressure and it gives us the chance to be a little bit more aggressive at places like this in the spring we were super fast here especially on the long run in practice it feels like our car is very similar you know past lap 10 I feel like we're almost as fast the internet not quite there but hopefully you know I want to see a lot of green flag running today I think it's a hot day like if you probably can see it on my face um this place is going to be really slick it was taking a lot of rubber and practice so hopefully that plays in our strengths what I think are our strengths and uh if we can be get stage points in both stages I think it opens up the playbook for us in the the third stage to really be aggressive Dave Parker rolls off from the 10th position well Kim AJ wasn't able to lock in last week at Daytona what is the key to a good day here at Darlington for you today with a stacked field man yeah field is stacked it's uh that's what makes this Infinity Series uh so much fun the the regulars are are stacked and then you start adding the cup guys again so U you know I Le filter got protection Chevy was pretty good in practice you just you got to be patiently aggressive out here there's times you got to go attack but other times you got to just that that terms of Darlington Race the racetrack you just got to do that but uh you know I felt we're in okay in practice it wasn't amazing but um it's a long day the tracks can change a lot it's going to be hot it's going to be slick so really just about making no mistakes good news is Marty he starts up front fourth for AJ almond bger patiently aggressive I'm not sure how you pull that off here at Darlington so let's talk about the drivers not currently locked in and give me a case of why they will be locked in in a few weeks Kyle we'll start with you and Ryan SE Ryan SE he's in the best position he's been in all of the playoffs he's headed in the right direction almost one Texas hasn't finished wor and 16th in the last eight races four races to go it's a positive yeah I'm going to go Parker cman just heard him talking about last week the great race that that was getting that third plate finish lot of points and especially coming after that penalty they received they have themselves in a good spot they're qualified 10th has some speed in the car I think Parker does a great job here today to even solidify that spot even more yeah the other side of that coin uh is Sammy Smith he's lost 46 points uh to the bubble and that's huge at this point in the season he has to make this race count this is going to be a defining moment I feel like for his season and whether he moves on into the playoffs or not okay and the other Brandon Jones we've been talking can he point his way in he's in a must-win situation at minus 108 right now uh good RAC tracks he has won here he knows how to get it done just not sure this is the place that it can happen I would look at Atlanta as more of a possibility of getting that win and moving in yeah it will take a win for Brandon Jones to make the playoffs in all likelihood you know it might surprise you how centrally located Darlington Raceway is Charleston in the Low Country 2 hours south the Grand Strand and Berle Beach 2 most of the action will take place down here this afternoon so what are we looking at here well first of all you're up against what is the safer barrier this is is not a soft wall it is a safer barrier steel and foam energy reduction thank you University of Nebraska back in 2002 what are we looking at here this is the right rear quarter panel off of an exity series car of the 11 composite body panels this is the one that will take the most abuse you know what it's going to do all night long or all afternoon long and that is because there is speed up here the driers send it in in they get as close as they can without hitting it but you know they're going to hit it because that's where the speed is and then what happens overnight get rid of my body panel here Jake Evans and his crew well they repaint the whole thing because after all you got to get fresh charlington stripes for the southern 500 they're just going to have xinity stripes after tonight Marty uh Dave Dell Jr just already getting in the wall first thing just from practice these guys started off in the wall and they stayed in the wall all through practice uh qualifying wasn't any better than practice I will say that uh it it has been an amazing day watching these guys but they know at Darlington once they get in the wall they just power out of it they don't come in and check this thing you know a lot of drivers have come here and driving different things doesn't matter if it was the truck series the exfinity series Cup Series back in 2002 oh my goodness a young reporter trying could he get C around here K without getting into the wall That's s where in the world did you come up with this no actually I was challenged to put it in the wall and get a Darlington stripe I had no idea we had T did you do did you have a part in this DJ no no not not at all that's pre- cell phones dude I know I know I thought all that video proof was gone uh Cole kuster hopes to avoid the Darlington stripe today after a few rough weeks he needs a good run Kim [ __ ] he does Marty and the good news is they stayed off the wall and practicing qualifying but you consider Darlington one of your best racetracks after the couple weeks you have what do you and the team need to do to write the course we just got to keep doing what we're doing you know have a solid day I think we have one of the best teams in the garage that can execute well and um really put a race together so I feel like we had a solid hosle anation for Mustang in practice didn't qualify how we wanted to I think uh we just we just got to get back on track but JT put the Magic Touch on it now so hopefully drive to the front um but it's nice to use the brake pedal again we haven't haven't used the brake pedal in probably a month and a half with the super spear racing we've been doing doing so um it's nice to get back to an actual RAC track all right apparently Jonathan Tony has the magic touch like I mentioned there is no Mark DJ on his car from practicing qualifying but he will roll off from the 21st position yeah he might have to get up there really close he might get a mark but they have to put an end to this and put a stop to this right now you know if there was anybody needing to get those 15 playoff points for winning the regular season it's Cole Custer in this group is that's where they're really hurting as they see the playoffs they're going to probably finish either first or second but getting the ship rided right now is of utmost importance they have lost 89 points in two races I didn't think that was really possible to be honest with you but with you but they have done it coming up next why is there so much urgency in this race today KP and DJ will explain plus today's pre-race ceremonies they're next Darlington Raceway on Labor Day weekend a NASCAR tradition that dates back to 1950 today it's the NASCAR Xfinity series plus some of the biggest stars from The Cup Series like Chase Elliot Joey Lano and Christopher Bell who is on the poll this afternoon should be a fun one and a quick one DJ only 147 laps does that add to the sense of urgency for the drivers well it does but I promise you behind the wheel of these things trying to get around there especially after you get about 20 laps on the tires it it is not a short race but you have to do your job not give up spots and anything you've got to drive hard all the time yeah you can't recover from a mistake there's not enough time so in the words of the Great Southern philosopher Larry the Cable Guy get her done baby that's what you got to do out there you got to go make something happen but KP for the bubble drivers I also think it's important to note and I'm sure crew chiefs are saying this you can't force things at Darlington either no no you can't you can't force anything here it's got to come to you you got to find the rhythm of the racetrack and make things happen when you overdrive your car and overdrive the track bad things happen at the same time you have to be aggressive if you're on that bubble to make something happen yeah giveing good information about what your car is doing cuz you're not going to get that many the opportunities to work on it through this race makes you think about the cup drivers tomorrow night because this will be the last race of the regular season for those guys right here on USA but for the a drive by Justin Aly and why wouldn't it be given his success here you did it bu we you daring hey yes it's over at Darlington Checkered Flag in the air that is two time Darlington winner Justin Al I can see everybody standing up there those last few laps fans on their feet waving their hats in the air they salute Justin ay as the che flag is in the air Justin Aly has just proven that this track is not too tough to tame he's now won here three times Darlington has been kind to Justin Aly can he become the first driver to sweep the season here in 22 years since some guy named Jeff Burton did it Dave so Marty he qualified 20th yikes what happened I talked to Justin about that he said well I just didn't get into turn one very well and by the time I got through one and two I was over really cautious in turns three and four so here's what I'm going to do I'm going to go hard at the beginning I'm going to get the spots quickly that I can then I'm just going to chill for a while and then try to tra charge hard at the end of the stage and get some more stage points that's the Justin aluy plan Marty day before this year Darlington was like anything Shane Ben gbur had seen in his entire career but he was really respectable in the spring and he made an interesting point to me this is the first time he's coming back to an intermediate track for the second time he told me when I come to tracks for a second time that's where I need to be pushing a little bit more and expecting better results we'll see what SVG can deliver today Kim well Marty Sheldon Creed had an outstanding qualifying effort and will start from the front row his best starting position in six races here when I talked to Sheldon today he told me he thinks this is the best car he has had here since the summer of 2022 when he finished second and a lot of effort went into preparing this car he said they were not good in this year's Spring Race so there was no way they could come come back with what they had the team's been preparing this car for a few weeks and it paid off Sheldon notched his 11th runner-up finish a couple of weeks ago in Michigan maybe today is the day he breaks through for his first exfinity series win so DJ if you're a bubble driver do you expect to get a little extra courtesy from the cup series drivers in the field today oh yeah you're going to get some because that's the professionals that they are but don't think they're just going to pull over or not race you hard because you're going to get everything they have yeah it depends on the situation if you were look in the mirror if they look in the mirror and see you run them down yeah they're going to get out of your way if you're racing that final lap or those final few laps for position there's no respect plus 44 to the cut line I asked his crew chief Patrick Donahue which track of the next four is your best opportunity to win and lock yourselves in well of course he picked all four and Parker has done well at all four in the past today another top 10 qualifying appearance he'll start outside row five Kim Cory Heim will will roll off from the 12th position he had a top 10 finish in last year's Spring Race so I asked him how can the team replicate or best that 10th Place finish he said make no mistakes this series is so hard he said and the littlest mistake can throw you off completely he said he feels like he has way more car control than in his previous starts here which is an important part Marty of having a successful day at a track too tough to tame Kim you have to go a long way back to find two-time Darlington winner Noah Gregson don't be surprised to quickly see him in the top 10 grex and ranks Darlington among his favorite racetracks and the 30 car has shown speed and a part-time effort this year also as you go further back in the F in the field Chad fincham is back there in the 14 car trying to get off Pit Road here making his second start or fourth start of the season however here at Darlington always a challenge but coming from the back is going to make it even more challenging for Chad finum now let's head up to the gentleman who will call the action this afternoon Rick Allen Steve lart and the man with Darlington wins on his resume Jeff Burton thank you Marty great job pre-race there getting us set up we talked a lot about the star power of the exfinity series but this field really even though it's in the afternoon we're talking serious star power with the cup series also two Cup Series champions are a part of this field two Cup Series champions and so many exfinity series win I mean you could go down through the accolades but the list is perhaps too long and Christopher Bell shows the challenge ahead of him right he took the pole position runs so well at this r race uh Chase Elliott back in the race Noah green we just talked about SVG at the bottom the double duty driver I think for him it's just laps and try to learn this difficult racetrack don't give him the trophy just yet Christopher Bell won the poll but the next best starting position Chase Elliott all the way back in 16 all right well I want you to bring some more positivity to the driver of the 20 then Jeff I mean we're not going to give him the trophy up but let's chat with him before we get the green flag hey Christopher it's the booth you got us hey guys but we don't uh see you in a lot of these exfinity races why today uh I don't know they got offered to me um and I'm never going to turn it down an opportunity to uh to race especially here at Darlington this is such a unique track getting laps here is pretty important all right you have had so much success in the Infinity Series what will it take to get a win today uh it's going to take a lot of uh a lot of patience it's a really really short race but here at Darlington you know how easy is to get yourself in trouble so got to take it easy got to make sure that you have a car to at the end all right have a good day and again Christopher Bell will start up front it's a warm one Marty you've uh hydrated well enough haven't you for the start of this race I have Rick can confirm quite toasty here on Pit Road at Darlington Chandler Smith is a fresh off a second place finish at Daytona last week but Darlington has been a whole different challenge for him his best finish here in three start start is 12th he admits to me this place has been tough to figure out but he told me I think this is an important race for us we finally started to get some momentum last week after that great Daytona finish we need to keep that going today with a solid run Dave for Riley herbs the focus today is playoff points he will start eighth and of all the drivers who have won a race to lock themselves into the playoff he has the fewest playoff points remember those are the points that take you all the way through the playoffs they go from round to round so he needs to win stages today and hopefully win the that race and get five playoff points the transfer after today Kim well despite having a two- win season and being locked into the playoffs Sam Mayer described the last couple of months as cold for the team he's got three straight finishes of 13th their worth including two dnfs so he told me the goal for this weekend is to turn the season around so I asked what exactly does that mean he said we're looking for an uneventful day we don't want to make headlines we just want a solid day with a top 10 finish that could be easier said done here at Darlington however Sam did finish the spring race in the top five and had a great qualifying lap he'll Roll Off Third so you're going to hear a lot about playoffs and that's because it's just four races away until they get underway you take a look at the playoff standings everyone in yellow has won they're locked in the ones above that red line they're looking for every point they can get yeah they really are Ryan seek Sammy Smith starting right near each other in this race so right from the start they'll be watching each other all right before we see the green flag let's hear couple pep tops we'll start with the 98 all right my man got a long race here nice and hot stay cool in there all day long nice and smooth all day long we'll get thing up front sounds good boss man it's a short race right but you still have to be patient it's going to be super important the Save Tires early so on the back end of a run you've got speed cuz it's huge with all that so got a real good cut everybody's in a good spot we're have some fun today copy that Steve it's a Sprint this thing is 147 laps 200 miles I mean it goes fast how do you plan for this race well very fast but you heard right there you still have to save tires 45 lap stage one the second for stage two and you would hope to run either of those stages or both of those stages on just one set of tires you don't want to change tires in the middle of stage one or stage two because that 57 lap stage while not much longer if yellows break that up Jeff new tires are required they only have four sets of tires in their pits so you really want to try to save them for that final stage cuz if there's a caution even after five laps brand new tires are a huge advantage two by two down the backstretch led by Christopher Bell and Sheldon cre Jeff I know you have beat the drum of Sheldon Creed as far as how great his season has gone I know that we continue to look at all of those second place finishes and that's not a negative he's in position to win races could today be the day well I think today could be the day just going to have to be careful for the majority of the race they keep track position and when the time is right they'll get 100% fans love racing here in Darlington South Carolina they're on their feet as we get ready for the Infinity Series to get underway green flags in the air big stack up on the bottom as the 31 has a little bit of issue getting going Parker rut's going to be slow going down the backstretch doesn't look like he's at speed at all the 19 car grath he also is backing up Joe graph Jr in the 19 Parker redle and the 31 both off the pace early and that's not the case for Christopher Bell looks like he ran another qualifying lap there that first lap was smoking there Something's Happened to the 31 car it just it lost power it's not rolling at all as he enters Pit Road I don't know if it's a transmission a rear end electrical he said it was a miss shift Jeff and he said it won't fire so he's trying to get to Pit Road but yeah you can see woefully under power and he said it just won't turn over Steve so disappointing for the 31 you know you do get a little bit of practice you would hope for that thing to continue to run they're going to have to diagnose it but at this point out of contention in the race as you see the battle between the 26 and the 48 Parker cerman with a pretty nice exit right there I thought he was going to turn to the inside he looks but stays in line Cory 26 just in front of him then with a pretty good run behind them is Samy Smith in the eight so those three cars nose to tail as they work their way around this mile and a third Ryan SE in the 39 there very unique race line at Darlington Raceway that dashed white line at the bottom of the race track that's the edge of the apron as we see Parker left is stopped on Pit Road and NASCAR might be forced to throw a caution if they don't feel that car can go be retrieved safely it is not rolling and there's that caution you mentioned all right Steve well you also mention the possibility of after five laps tires being worned down no throttle respon well they're worn but you're not going to get a fresh set here with the tire limits you're just going to have to leave this set on but super unfortunate break for the the 31 of Parker ruts laugh reading the radio it seems like they feel like it's some sort of electrical issue just no power no gauges no signal and there it sits still on Pit Road early caution comes out here in the Heats at Darlington and Darlington Raceway it's Parker redl after such a Rick so to clarify what I was trying to say a moment ago right at this start or the start of the race right here he goes to shift into fourth gear and the car just died on him and they've not been able to get power since then and you can hear him when he finally got it here to his pit stall they can fire it up Steve but it immediately shuts off so they think maybe the fuel there's a fuel pump issue or the cable is broken but they can get it fired it just won't stay cranked so the cable would be basically the the fuel pumps are cable driven in this situation you see them currently working on the top of the engine it looks like sometimes you can you know manually put fuel into the carburetor fill the bowls up and it will fire but if the fuel's not pumping from the cell then once the fuel kind of runs out of the carburetor it shuts back off a donut on the left side of the seven Dave poor qualifying put him back in the stack to start listen to this body and the crush panel quarter panel all looks fine rubbed a lettering off of it wheel weights are still on it no issues there if it broke the crush panel open that might be uh what you feel the pressure change inside copy that that's crew chief Jim pman telling him it's okay Co racing the 19 think well you're okay what about me you ran me down and I lost a whole bunch of spots yeah Joe graph Jr uh got into the driver side there of the seven before he bounced out let's try this again so One Thing Rick you know in the cup series every time you see a yellow you get new tires exfinity you actually get to restart on old tires about a slick racetrack Jeff very difficult to get this right yeah let's see if this inside Lane rolls better than the outside a lot of times it does Bell the control car gets in the gas first a better restart this time for creed Al minger on the inside two wide as the exit turn two I think two wide on the exit or two on the restart at Darlington might be the narrowest spot on the whole circuit just funnels down to really one lane yet they make it work Sam May trying to make that outside Line work and maybe help Creed along there this is a part of the RAC trck where years ago nobody raced through here now they just roll through here side by side it's very tight you said it on the exit of two we're going to see some guys hit the wall there there's cigman moving to the inside trying to take a spot here can't quite clear Cory Heim he was so close to being out of clearing what able to get it done able to fall in behind him it's Joey Lano in the 15 up into the wall just a little brush of the wall there yeah Noah green actually passing him Noah is qualified around 30th he's in 16th already Chase Elliott in the 17 also making the pass on legano time right up against the wall yeah that's down the back straightway the ball actually moves out into the into the racetrack a little bit here's Lano on the outside of Chastain just gets in the wall and an issue for legano you see smoke coming out the right side maybe a little too much contact looks like flat right side tires somewhere oh that's an engine oh man smoke out the right side pipes so he looks like he shut it off now as he's going to roll down to Pit Road that could be a very short day for legano yeah disappointing for this team to have a cup champ in your car take to the truck to get that experience and then just essentially learn very little other than practicing qualifying Marty what are they saying on the radio they think it's an engine issue they're going to take it to the garage for Joey Lano so if Cup series drivers Jeff wanted a little bit of an experience today lano's not going to get in how about Riley Heron the wall chaotic start here at Garlington R very hard for that 98 of Riley he's slow on the racetrack but a big hit in the Wall came in seventh and I thought Riley had maybe the best car in practice on a long run tons of pace but this thing yeah the right front is down yeah it's hurt he's limping around the racetrack now yeah this is the exit of turn to he has to go all the way to the backstretch so it really comes down to I don't see any debris on the racetrack currently it's bent I just think it's flat if the right front Tire stays on it will probably stay under green if the carcass of the tire comes off gets on the R Racing surface could require a yellow but it looks like he's going to get back to Pit Road top of the screen a lot of racing here you see the 98 see this so many times wow I wonder if that tire looked like it went down first I was going to say it was Raceway Sam Mayer's moved into the second position really running some nice laps last two laps he's taken a big chunk off the lead of Christopher Bell and you can see why right here that one car really gets through the middle of the corner with a lot of confidence you can see him put the power down oh man the bag of it is definitely a little on edge though he did put the power down and the back in kicked out a little bit there Kim yeah but putting together great lap times that's Sam Mayer we talked in our Countdown the Green Show how he described the last couple of months as very cold for the team as he closes in right now on Christopher Bell to the back bumper of the number 20 but he said the last couple months have been so hard he said I got in my own head as he makes the pass for the lead Sam a he is going to the clear Christopher Bell but he said he gets in his own head finally he was able to get out of his own head he's been working with a sports psychologist and right now we are St Sam mayor out of that cold streak and on fire here at Darlington 27 laps up front and now the lead has changed Bell running second to Sam Mayer Sam did a nice job of just overdriving the entry of three sliding up in front of bell bell tried to cross him over and just couldn't make it happen that's the textbook pass here at Darlington isn't it we see the slide job all the time here well here it is it's dangerous to do it here though see great forward momentum now just overdrives the entry so the problem here or the trouble here is sliding up and hitting the wall that's why he had to check up so much Bell tried to turn underneath him but Bell's car just does not have the grip and Christopher knows this is coming he checked the entrance speed up tried to accelerate but here the throttle he's he just can't go back to the gas not enough rip mayor now has a fourth tenth of a second le as the caution has come out 15 laps still to go in stage one and there's some debris on the race track very tough timing for the crew chiefs as well four sets of tires in the pits so you know you put a set on at the end of stage one and you know you're going to put a set on at the end of stage two so you kind of have two sets to mess around with that 57 lap final stage you definitely want to have a set to put on sometime during there can you afford can you afford to burn a set here right math says you can but I just don't love the idea I think if you're a race winner you have to take whatever the penalty is now to stay on old tires and wait until later in the race if I'm Ryan se's team who's running 13th I'm here I'm putting on tires and I'm driving up through the field and getting stage points it might hurt me later right but I need to find a way to beat Sammy Smith in points do you think you can do that today just by playing this game normal if you do then don't but if you feel like you're missing something new tires here are so much faster he could not only get points he could win this stage it's a risk Steve and a gamble because you could not have tires late in the race when you want them but it would could potentially be an opportunity to gain a lot of points well the risk is if you stay out and the field pits you're going to have a hard time staying on the lead lap at 10 or 12 lap I know that sounds crazy but you're multiple seconds off the pace on Old Tires I think if if I'm s may I stay on the racetrack Bell I stay on the racetrack uh but it's going to be a split someone's going to decide to use that set of tires now with tomorrow's Cup race this is easy it's time to put a set of tires on you know we got at least 30 laps out of this set do what what what would worry me about my gamble is the number of laps I have to make it up right it's only well they going to drop the green flag with what 10 laps nine laps can I get from back in the pack up far enough to take advantage of it I don't know Steve it that'd be a long way to go you're good math says you will but math doesn't take into account all those cars you have to pass right I mean you'll be fast enough you see right here a lot of activity on Pit Road a lot of interested crew chiefs like I said I'd be staying on the racetrack but I do think someone who doesn't have track position going to split the decision we saw teams up on the wall that doesn't mean their car is going to come down to service instantly you see sets of tires you have to have them later in the race so no one near the front is going to come to Pit Road that would have been fun to [Music] watch if you are in the Darlington area you've got to visit the museum here there's so much history from a racetrack that saw its first race in 1950 and virtually everyone who's who in Nascar has had success at know to talk about wheel hopping at a racetrack like this is a very rare thing um so you know you have to hope it gets better because if not he'll have his hands full and I do want to say before we go green here old tires on a restart at dar charington there are going to be a lot of guys spinning tires and making mistakes I want to say that that Toyota of Christopher Bell is on the inside so Sam Mayer race leader chose that outside line for this restart 10 laps remaining and Sam mayor is under attack from both sides you saw Creed going to the outside Bell on the inside and mayor surges ahead down the backstretch in front of bell and Creed now Bell to the inside it's very difficult to say side by side is anybody going to give right here Bell a little deeper into turn one but here comes mayor on the outside he's going to clear him easily Bell does not have the rear grip to be aggressive with his race car like he needs to be Austin Hill running fourth almond Dinger fifth take a look as we get this perspective from the Toyota on board just listen to the patience you have to have with the throttle on these old tires one and two listen to the throttle use across the middle [Music] look like he's driving down a gravel road that thing is so slipping and sliding doesn't even look like it's on asphalt yeah look at the wheel movement he just does not have anywhere near the griffy knees look at all that wheel to the right shows you the back of his car just does not feel good Cole kuster on the inside line getting passed by a pair of Junior Motorsports where maybe a trio of Junior Motorsports cars on the right side n of Brandon Jones this is a great place to be is on the outside so hard for that zero to run that bottom Lane you see that squeezes the nine up because that's going to slow them both down Joe graph Jr in or excuse me Cory Heim in the 26 to the inside and look at Shane Van gisbergen Noah Gregson you've got six bars here you can throw a blanket over right now here comes kuster himim falling back through the middle and may [Applause] [Music] slow mayor around still green as he spins but stays on the apron and he's going to try to get to Pit Road it looks like the left rear tire is down Kim yeah that's what Kevin Hamlin the spotter confirmed left rear down and remember they wanted an uneventful n did not want to steal headlines this is not what this team needed they were looking to turn it around here at Darlington be intered to see what they find on the one is it as simple as a flat tire or another mechanical issue we go back to this five-way battle right here let's see what happens to the one this is entering turn three just loose the back of the car comes around but it has all the makings of like a flat left rear tire this is what bell saw yeah right now Bell's avoiding the wreck he just know look all the way out of the gas he can you can see what's happening and this was impressive he spins and puts her in gear and keeps going and here Sammy Smith gets into the wall little darling strike not even sure that one counts here well he's running six only four laps to go in this stage Sammy Smith in position to get some stage points and that's what he wants over Ryan SE who SE has dropped to 15th now so out of position to get points at the end of stage one under three to go trying to get more the Gap now between the two has Samy Smith ahead of Ryan SE by by Four Points again that playoff picture getting very clear now with only three races remaining after today as we have Bell under attack from Hill Bill's car is not the way he needs it to be with two to go I think Hill could get this spot a little higher line for Austin Hill we'll see if he can close the gap it was about three to four car lengths I like what the 21 did there Rick he entered High turned across the 20's weight exited a half a lane lower looks like he's going to do the same thing here High entry as the 20's low try to pick up the power in the middle now the 20 is going to stay at the bottom the 21's going to run that second lane should give him a big run down the backstretch probably too far down to make a move on him one lap to go about three car lengths this time Hill a little bit lower sideways Bell is trying to hold on to it Hills to his back bumper this is a playoff point for Austin Hill if he can get by [Music] him hill already with two wins and the nine is sideways the caution is going to come out and that'll have Bell well we'll see what they say when the caution came out who was in front because the 21 was pretty close there to get getting to the inside of the 20 and the nine wck for the 10th position and this a pretty big damage on the quarter panel the left rear is flat I'm not sure if that's a result of or of the race for the top 10 they don't worry about 11th on back they'll use the loop lines for those positions but the top 10 that are rewarding or are being awarded points they'll go to a camera or any means necessary instantaneous time of yellow just like we would to determine the finish of the race listen into svg's radio with that spin my bad going to square up but kind of half locked and I misjudged he did the right thing everything's good it was here he is the nine car loses momentum Shane says he was trying to push him and just didn't get it lined up the right way it's hard to push at this racetrack with worn out tires and the entire field making their way on to Pit Road all led by a 20 of Christopher Bell Dave Parker cerman finished fourth in that stage seven stage points he started 10th so good forward movement for him the car quick actually very loose he said I killed the right rear there will be air pressure and Chassis adjustment on the 48 Marty Dave you could almost hear it in AJ almond dinger's voice he was happy stage one was over with absolutely terrible handling at the end of that stage on the 16 car going to take a big swing at it he also had a little contact with the wall towards the end of that stage Austin Hill had maybe the best long run car he said I'm just giving up too much across the middle compared to the 20 of Christopher Bell who said quote I am hanging on literally inside the car so loose on exit they also take a massive swing at it and the T will easily hold serve here on kit Road Shel Creed grabs three spots with an impressive before that green flag came back out for 10 laps went from 34th to eth that might open some eyes and we heard Jeff Burton say is that what Ryan SE needs to do Ryan SE chose not to Ryan SE and Brandon Jones the big losers in this first segment yeah Rick back to you I assume that it's a little cooler up there right guys it is but Burton just hit me I don't know I I didn't say anything wrong you earned it I'm not even sure for what we're going to figure that out after but it was definitely earned I think it was a Eureka of course well I'm going to tell you for 45 laps that was total chaos flat tires yellows cars breaking I don't know what the next 45 have in store but man there's a lot going on yeah the stage one recap is busy yeah spinning well now so you know again we talk about it's a short race they're going to add a lap right here it's a short race uh who learned what Christopher Bell's car clearly was not good at all at the end of that run the 21 car you know was right right on him looked like he was going to pass until that caution came out they had a rare bad Pit Stop came out fifth but a lot of racing left to go Dave weather up date from Justin algy running eighth I know you know this but it is hot as crap in here like I am I am roasting in here so it's uh hotter than normal I can tell you that I can confirm Marty you I second that nomination Dave it is warm here on Pit Road and an interesting comment a moment ago Jeff I'd love to get your take on this from Coleman Presley to AJ Alger he said listen this is a shorter stage but I don't want you to go any harder take it easier earlier in the Run so we don't pay the price so much on the back end of the run so as a six-time Darlington winner is that something you use to your advantage here over the years Jeff well I think I think the key to taking off is you have to take off with a certain amount of speed so you don't lose spots but you have to do that in a way that you're not AB abusing the tires any worse than it has to be and remember the comment that he made that his car was actually wheel hopping getting into turn three so I think with that case late in the Run clearly he was having issues so maybe even more important for him to conserve a little bit at this start we'll see how the fresh good years work out for Christopher Bell and Creed what adjustments they made to that 20 if he can go for a little bit longer run he's already LED 39 laps and stage two is underway Dinger right on that back bumper as cre is powering around the outside can he clear the 20 as they get out of turn two he does and cre is leading now at Darlington alad Dinger looks to the inside of the 20 but now Bell picking up the momentum as he exits four one into the wall and that brings the caution out that's the 91 and so now we have Kyle weatherman That Gets behind the wall but a lot of damage to the right side and the caution he was running 25th he just heard him say something was broke we talk about how short the race is we've already had four yellows it's been a eventful race that car right there has got some heavy damage entering turn three car just never turns he said something was broke certainly something happens see the car drop it dropped and then it just went straight so as you mentioned Steve four cautions already early in this race just starting that second stage you're watching the weatherman on Pit Road and this is the cause for the first time he was on Pit Road yeah I don't know if it's a flat tire suspension failure but either way the right front kind of goes straight down into turn three and unfortunately for Kyle weatherman a couple weeks ago at Michigan this hit right here just a massive massive wreck for the 91 so poor Kyle weatherman has taken a couple pretty big hits into the wall both look to be some sort of either mechanical or Tire issue those are big hits and you know now when you have these incidents every time you get a right front vibration starting to feel something not right you can't help but think there's something wrong and you get a little bit nervous as you approach these Corners those things hurt tow truck will have to take that 91 behind the wall and back to the truck I might extend this yellow just for another lap we'll see how quickly able to get this thing hooked up Kyle there catching his breath on a hot day frustrated I'm sure well just not only the impact to him and potential injuries but also you think about that that's two large impacts for a smaller team uh and that can really set a race team back because that Michigan car you know if it ran ever runs again I'd be surprised and this car also with big damage so it just makes it difficult Steve to have the equipment you need for the next week Jeb Burton we were talking about the heat the Celsius on board giving us a look back at the driver here Jeb does some training some training in h sauna hot on him I know that cuz he's already Bor always borrowing [Music] mine getting ready for the restart once again 20s on the inside Christopher Bell and Sheldon Creed in that 18 on the outside of Row one as they come back to the restart Zone Creed easily clearing Bell as they go into turn three you mentioned the heat 93° track temperature 128 how about that corner entry speed by Christopher Bell that was impressive to roll that much speed and clear Creed only one car out of line and then you see Chase Elliot in the 17 jump out of line you see when you run the bottom you really have to ask a lot of doar and if you cannot make the pass and outside is so much momentum so much momentum and really I think save a little bit of Tire I think when you go to the bottom you ask a lot of your car you ask a lot of the tires with 31 laps to go in this stage I just think these you know passes or attempted passes by that 17 just continues to wear the tires down take a little bit of life out of him but it's the only way to move forward you kind of have to take advantage of you k now the 97 of SVG see him roll out of the gas a little bit there he's going to chase a 17 through 1 and two this would be a good learning time for v gisbergen as we see love look to the inside of Heim I like what Noah Gregson did right there he stayed at the top in that black 30 and he going to try to roll to the right rear of Love see if he can get that position as love was oh man fills the hole last minute no it with the crossover now does he dive into one a little deeper and try to slide up the racetrack he's going to stay low and will he clear him he does oh that was really well done by Noah that's kind of like not a complete slide jaw but that's a slide pause and he made the two wonder if he was coming all the way up and then clears him really well done Chase Elliott in the 17 trying to get by the two also talk a lot about cup drivers and Christopher Bell leading this race but you know he's having a good day but 17 or Chase Elliott really not I think it's a disadvantage now for these for these cup drivers although the great race car drivers Dave the cup cards are so different than these cars they have a lot of ground to make up when they come into this series and Jee when I talked to Greg Ives the crew chief on the 17 about Chase running here you know it's a matter of always Bo wanting to run this 17 for Mr Hendrick Chase enjoys that but Greg said it was kind of cool too that they're kind of historic together 10 years ago they ran together in an expend race here uh and that was when he was full-time so 2014 to 2024 why not celebrate a 10 year anniversary anniversary they'd like to do it closer to the top 10 Marty GB trying to track down Chase Elliot and I had an interesting conversation with him about how tough the ovals have been and how different Darlington is than anything he's seen in his entire career but Jeffy made a very interesting point to me he said this is the first intermediate I'm coming back to for a second time and that's when I expect my results to pick up and myself to get better I expect more out of myself when I come to a racetrack for a second time so you were a rookie Once Upon a Time Jeff is that what you found the second time to ATT track that's when you expected a little bit more out of yourself well I did expect more but I don't didn't always perform better sometimes I felt like okay I learned all this stuff and I went there the next time thinking I Knew Too Much rather than recognize and I still had a lot to learn but I will say SVG running 14th I think this is an advancement I see him with good Pace I saw it also in in uh practice at good pace so I would say so far there's no question this is an improvement and Jeff when you were a rookie you had practice time I mean these guys it's so brief we heard you know Christopher Bell mentioned 15 laps or 15 minutes was not enough it's like one run really and you just can't learn enough in that short of time and that's what SBG is faced with trying to learn these cars these tracks with a very limited amount of time I also think the expectation level was much lower people didn't expect as much out of rookies today they want they expect you to perform much quicker we got 14 on Pit Road now and so Chad finchum as quickly as he gained and got up into the top 10 at the end of stage one he is back back on Pit Road this is for sure unscheduled must have some sort of an issue there Jason and I didn't think it was suspension it felt like it was drive train talking about a vibration on the radio of the 14 have to bring it to the service of his crew eight Samy Smith fourth right behind him the seven of all D strong day for Sammy Smith he's running in fourth place here fastest car on the RAC trck that La Ryan SE right now being scored in 15th the reason I bring that up is SE was ahead of Samy Smith in the point standings the playoff standings coming into this race and now we see Smith has leaped frog Ryan Sean has an eight-point advantage Kim and both of those teams Sammy Smith's team and Brian SS when I checked in with them this morning said we will be paying attention to what the other team does cuz we do not want to get caught off guard but Samy Smith doing a great job running the fourth position right now I asked kind of where they started with their setup this weekend they said our teammate Justin Aly had such a good car in the spring dominated the race so we are very close to what that setup was in the spring for the seven car they know what worked for Justin they made some slight adjustments for weatherman he's coming out of the infield Care Center Kims down there and Rick the second hard hit in three weeks for Kyle so are you okay and what happened yeah I'm good like you said I'm I'm still not 100% from the Michigan the Michigan right side hit but uh yeah something broke and and into the wall again so yeah just still really sore on my right side hopefully hopefully that gets healed up pretty quick but yeah just as you can see something broke right there and couldn't uh couldn't do anything about it we had a couple adjustments made I felt like we're going to be hopefully as fast as exp spit in the internet after after those changes but we uh we didn't get to see if they were so we'll go on to the next one glad you're okay thanks and Marty Kyle celebrated his 27th birthday on Wednesday said this was not the birthday present he wanted this week certainly not Kim meanwhile AJ alinger has gotten his car much better handled wise but now there's another issue with a 16 listen in I got I don't know what smells more oily all the gauges look okay I can't tell what it is so Ste the team told them don't worry about it keep going but they seem pretty casual for smoke in the cockpit I don't know why are they not so worried about that here at Darlington cuz there's nothing you can do if it's something catastrophic it's going to fail and your day is going to be over you hope it's just a small oil leak I would have thought it was tire rubber on the exhaust burning sometimes you'll see some smoke in the cockpit he said it smells oily which is not shocking maybe they have a small oil leak under the hood that's also landing on the header but you know the relax look of Alex Y is because he knows he's not going to stop and open the hood running third and check on it so Jeff it's either going to be nothing and you'll find it at the shop on Monday or it's going to be something really bad and you're not going to run the whole distance but there's just unfortunately at this nothing you can do yeah and as a driver you almost have to ignore it I know it's hard to do but been in that situation many times where you take a few laps you assess you're like okay nothing's catastrophic right now I just got to go back to work but let's go back and talk about Sheldon Creed that pass for the lead Christopher Bell got hung up with the with the lap car but now Sheldon Creed controls this race he has had 10 second place finishes he leads the series in top five this could be the day those little things those little things that happened that put you in position Steve now you have to take advantage of it now your pit crew's got to step up you got to do the right thing on the restart this is a short race you've got track position keep it he knows how to win he's won here twice in the trucks but it's the idea of managing your tires and getting to the end of this race when you have the stiff competition that you've got I mean he just got by Christopher Bell who's phenomenal and is a great Cup Series driver and now Sheldon Creed still trying to get that first ever exfinity Series win but he's going to have the pressure of Bell right behind you well at this point you know seven laps to go at most tracks you would think that's a pretty comfortable margin to have a 34 of a second lead but with here and the car is sliding around the way they are they're such on the Ragged Edge I'm look at AJ alider trying to run down the 20 of bell and he just I mean that's like 1 mph too fast at that point in the corner that's it most tracks when you carry too much speed you slide across the pavement and you lose lap time just the way this track is laid out and the preferred Lane being so close to the wall you know when you overcook the entry or the middle you just slide into the wall and as we say that Creed's lead down into a half a second seems like Bell heard you Jeff and he wants to get control of this race back before the end of the stage and all that going on and look at the work look at he is sideways off the corner you could hear him spinning the rear tires that's why drivers love this racetrack look at all the wheel movement content's not the right word but Bell knows that this race is won in the final stage so he's in position with under five to go he sees the leader but he also looks like he takes his left hand off the steering wheel when he gets on the front stretch so so listen to the throttle all right listen to how little he's able to get in in the gas he's going to lift I mean he is he is working so hard in there and we keep talking about how hot it is you know that's that's a lot of pressure on him as well coming up on three to go as we see Cole kuster making the pass on Austin Hill well not so quick Austin Hill stand right up against the wall with the momentum yeah kuster's able to clear him that was for six Samy Smith and Aly still running in that fourth and fifth position there's Sammy Smith you mentioned it Jeff a good day so far for Sammy Smith in the first stage he earned five stage points and now running here in the fourth position he could gain some more [Music] and when the tracks looming in front of you are Atlanta Watkins Glenn in Bristol you want to get every point you can get when they're in front of you yeah the key here for him is staying aggressive it's kind of counterintuitive but if you you want to attack this racetrack a little bit if you try to get too safe it's e much easier in my opinion to make a mistake obviously overdriving it gets you in trouble too but I feel like sometimes when you quit attacking you get lazy and that's when you make mistakes I am wrecking loose boys wrecking loose all guy wrecking loose and running in the fifth position Creed now right on the back bumper of the 35 that has slowed him down enough that the 20 is within Striking Distance Here Comes Bell through three and four for the final time in stage two will he have enough time he's looked to the outside side it was closed and Creed is going to win his first stage of 2024 fight for 10th for that last stage Point Noah Gregson and Chase Elliott are going to take those ninth and 10th spots which they're not eligible for points being full-time Cup series drivers Sheldon Creed able to grab stage two and it was a great battle with Stage One winner Christopher Bell so now Creed one step closer to getting that first career win and we take a look at the Toyota driver updates here at Darlington Creed one stage two Bell one stage one those two are running first and second Chandler Smith was 11th as the field now on their way to Pit Road one more time and Kim you'll see top left Sammy Smith he said it started off neutral held on longer that run still tight at cold water which he requested Christopher Bell said the car is much better that run I still need a little bit more help on exit still too free Bell ask for a couple of bags of ice you can just tell these drivers roasting inside the race car meanwhile the race off Pit Road Sheldon Creed how about his team they're able to keep the lead after the round of stops Rick one of the best pit Crews on Pit finish this one off it's Creed and Bell making up the front row as stage three is underway great start by Bell on the inside will Creed be able to hold him off by Rolling the top they're going to be too wide on that very narrow exit of turn two freed ran him down the racetrack a little bit tried not to give him any room now almost touching fenders as Bell surges ahead into three the same thing we saw on the last restart 20 is able to drive into turn three with so much Pace now your bell and you have control of the race with 50 laps to go that is two lifetimes on a set of Goodyear tires so you really have to settle in drive a lot out your Fe only run as hard as you need to to keep control of the race especially in his situation where we've seen the car not be good at the end of long runs really save hard alond ninger he's trying to take the position Hill just in front of them but Cole kuster in that double zero is making the outside work there are a lot of very talented pck crew members up and down Pit Road but no crew in the xinity series in my opinion is more valuable than that of the 21 of Austin Hill every every single week when he has great cars they protect it when he has average cars they make him look better once again now he's up to third purely on pit stops alad dinger's falling all the way back to sixth restarted third we'll see if that car is set up for the longer run as cerman in the 48 a little bit slower and challenged Now by Chandler Smith in the 81 Mark is going to try to roll P the outside keep momentum here going to protect that spot oh got loose on the exit Chandler Smith once again to the outside two Jesse love recovering after starting in the back he's side by side with SVG right behind SVG you also have that 88 of qule been a quiet day nice day for qu he's had a good a bunch of runs in that 88 but little bit quiet day so far Carson a young one still learning 21 years old out of moresville North Carolina SVG we had mentioned second time to this intermediate Racetrack and wanting to learn and improve well he finished 15th here earlier in the year he's running 11th right now is that an improvement or does he feel like he should be further up in the top 10 well I look I think it's Improvement and I think he should be happy with the Improvement does he want to be running better of course he does he's a world class race car driver trying to learn a new skill but it's not going to happen overnight and you know I think he understands that see what the 88 decides to do too wide in front of him he backs off on Entry really out of the frame he backed off so much he's going to gas it up try to roll to the outside of that 97 what I think he's trying to do fill that spot love cleared SVG and then SVG tried the crossover move to get to the inside now let's see if he can keep the momentum up and stay in that Gap quap is going to put some pressure on him now as they go down the backstretch that was a great job aqu quaffle to recognize that SVG was going to be slow on Corner exit trying to make that pass Dave second xinity series start here for the blue and white 88 driver Carson qule and it's really about learning we know that he hasn't run that many expin series races one of the things that can really help you is a spotter who doesn't just call clear or you're to his outsid or someone to you're inside but someone who can coach you what other drivers are doing what you've seen over time and that's TJ Majors for Carson when I talked to him earlier today he said TJ has really helped me understand what to do here what not to do and as they've had a couple of pit stops now they can even tune the car a little bit more to Carson's liking running in 13 and just a moment ago the 18 of creed had some debris on the grill and Steve we normally see that at high-speed tracks like Daytona Talladega but he used the car in front of him to get rid of that debris just like we normally see it tracks yeah unfortunately he had to let the 21 go to get behind him for second position but I think that was the only option Kim that big piece of debris it had to be overheating absolutely the engine temperature was Rising hit 28 degree on the grill jel was a little frustrated because the 20 of Christopher B he didn't feel like he was backing up to them to help him so then he had to let hill by in order to get that debris off the debris is off now so the temperature is going down for Sheldon Creed well I understand the 18's frustration but if I'm Bell I'm not backing up as the leader either I know I want to help you out as a teammate and I know you're full-time in the Xfinity series but I'm leading this race here I I I can't come back to you I don't know how close or how much Firepower the 21 has I don't need to give him time I would like B to back up a little bit on the lead though I mean he has stretched it out to two and a half seconds and about three1 a LP faster really no need to run that quick and hurt the young driver and theyve changed tires and moved him back out fresh set of tires on Cory Heim the problem is that he is now a lap down see if he can stay just one or if he'll end up going two as we see Creed has made the pass on hill so he takes second back and the window net strap is flopping on the on the 18 is that distracting do you see that as a driver uh you probably do but I I I don't think it's much of a distraction I think it's right now he's just focused on trying to find a way to get back to Christopher Bell wow and sliding well and every time you slide that just takes a little bit out of the tires as now you see the 21 catches the 45 and a tough time on the exit of two kuster trying to take advantage he will have the speed to enter and we here there's maybe a piece of debris on the grill of the 21 but I don't know if that's enough to need to get behind somebody Mar so they're trying to see what the temperature is in the car they asked Austin Hill is that affecting what you're doing and he hasn't really answered the team yet but he has lost a couple of spots here in the last few moments here goes Cole kuster by him right now Justin algar threatening as well but I don't know is that much that debris concern you there Steve Andy street is certainly asking about it I mean I would definitely inquire about our temperatures but you know make sure the driver is not ignoring his water gauges let know that he has a little bit of debris there he's losing quite a few spots I think he's trying to get a run time that looked like the piece came off right there behind the seven you know multiple times a day we've seen cars catch a slower car on the exit of two and really lose a lot of momentum that's something you really got to start paying attention to later in the run when tires start to we out and there's a larger difference in speed between one car and another we've seen races lost here for that exact same reason see the 21 continue to fall backwards yeah the 21 is definitely struggling with more than just potential debris on the grill and you look at the Gap at the front is now under 3 and 1/2 seconds the 20s in relatively clean air Jeff so the question is did he run too hard or does he have to move up he's been running the bottom of three and four which seems to not be as good on Old Tires vers the 18 of creed running the top here's a battle between 48 of cerman the 17 of Chase Elliott Elliot's back to e cerman running ninth and Marty what's going on with bell he's cruising that's what's going on with bell with 31 laps now 30 laps to go here at Darlington so Jeff I hear what you're saying about he probably shouldn't get too far out for the 20 carb Christopher Bell but I also know Stevie Reeves's spotter a veteran Cup Series spotter said make sure you're taking care of yourself at what point Steve do you just trust your Cup Series driver to say hey I trust you're doing what we have asked and you're not getting too far out there well I'd like to see some more Pace out of the 20 and I'm hoping that's the top of three and four that does it because right now the 18 of creed is hands down faster each and every lap Creed has knocked off two or 3/10 of a second that lap they match lap time when Bell goes to the top so I know we trust experience but at a track like this where there's so little much you know such a small amount of grip and he's used to having that digital dash that gives you lap times it gives him more information you have to wonder if this expended car does he know what's too hard or what's sliding around too much yeah and I don't trust his car I mean we have seen at the end of every run his car has fallen off massively and this is going to be a longer run than what he's been running the car that I think can come from a long way back is a seven car he continually is two to three t0 a LP faster and you think 4 and a half seconds back is too much but when you start losing a half a second a lap on Old Tires here a guy all the way back like the seven car could come up and win this race as well as Cole kuster and they've got another set of tires if a caution comes out yeah they have all have tires left in the pit so if there's a yellow at this point you absolutely put new tires on theg once again really close to the back bumper this time it's ciger that he's trying to clear that's top 10 right there for Shane so I keep talking about his Improvement learning there's no harder RAC trck than this one right here so good job SVG looking back from that weather tech on board to cerman SVG in the top 10 Christopher bell with a two and 1 half second lead over Creed we are driving down the road all of a sudden bang There is a crack in our windshield you know what we can do now though stays at 2 and 1/2 seconds between Bell and Creed now only 22 laps remaining when he crosses the stripe there kuster 4 seconds back Aly 4.7 back freed was almost a half a second faster that lap hasn't been that much the last few laps but I think that's the other challenge for the 20 as we see Creed getting passed by the one of Sam mayor who's a little bit fresher on tires in his situation the other big challenge for the 20 is that as you catch traffic it is much harder on Old Tires to just clear them right everything takes a little bit longer and you mentioned how you catch them and where you catch them so as he exits turn two and we kind of look at the whole back straight away in front of him there's six cars that you know while he's faster than he's going to have to either get out of his preferred Lane or time where he catches them at this RAC trck there's times that when you you're looking especially in one and two you're looking at those cars you don't even you're just trying to set them up to pass them into turn three if you catch them too quickly it gets you in all kinds of trouble that Christoph reel has the experience to manage that but again Creed about 2/10 faster that lap look at all of it this what you talked about Steve chrisopher Bell one of the very best we have but it's a challenge he works his way down the backstretch and earlier Kim we saw the aid of Sammy Smith get into the wall everything okay with that car well there's been a couple hiccups today they needed a solid day they've had it he's running six also scored stage points in both stages but again there have been a couple of pickups that last stop under caution slow on the left rear and then his cool suit has failed they tried to alleviate it with an ice pack under caution take a listen to the radio will you can't give me a big bag we got to have some common sense how in the am I going to hold a giant bag of ice simp for we'll get together so again Samy's cool suit failed they gave him a bag of ice apparently the bag was too big to Sam's liking Adam wall the crew chief got on the radio said Sammy we've had two good stages Keep calm carry on we can finish this race strong Marty give a moment ago Steve surmised that something might be going on with Austin Neil who has lost more spots at at the time he was battling for fifth now he's back to 10th what's going on listen in uh really tight really loose uh trying to doing everything wrong like it doesn't matter where I run if I run one spot I'm tight if I run another Lane I'm extremely loose sideway drive it and as we speak he said I think I might have a tire going down so the pck crew did their job on the last stop they gained them four spots but the stage three since then has not been good for this 21 team well in a moment AG go you've got Chase Elliott in the 17 Austin Hill in the 21 watch Chase pass him but then as soon as he slides up the racetrack what's Austin Hill going to do he's going to let him know I'm still back here yeah a little bit of that some frustration just the car is driving so [Music] poorly he getting into the wall the bit there as we got AJ alond Dinger still tracking after Cole kuster kuster running fourth aldinger fifth the Gap now between Bell and Creed 1.6 seconds so that Gap has almost gone away and coming up on 15 laps to go in this race we've never had a caution free final stage here at Darlington closing up to 15 to go you wonder are we going to have a 15 laap shootout with these two trying to race each other other will we have a caution everyone is slipping and sliding as you see a Little Smoke Off the right rear of the 20 right up against the fence the 18 just looks more comfortable on the wall another 2/10 of a second was there enough time that's the question oh there's zero doubt in my mind Creed's going to get there no doubt the question is a already slipping and sliding nearly out of control Bell does he have anything to B battle against the 18 Creed had a little bit of trouble getting by this lap car think that's going to hurt him this lap little bit of contact there maybe off of two and now no cars between first and second Bell and Creed one and two Bell his only other start this year at New Hampshire he was first and Creed finished second to him and there's a little bit of cat and mouse here as well if C can get close enough to Bell can you force him into a mistake or if your bell and you can keep it stretched can you kind of force the Chaser to OverDrive his car and what's so important for creed right now and it's very easy to say up here don't try too hard maximize your lap but if you get step over that's three1 of a second right there yeah I think if I'm on the radio to Creed to your point Jeff I'm reassuring him he's getting there no problem like don't feel like you have to Matt said you going to get there with tons of time so no more than the car gives you in your brain though you hear 12 to go 13 to go it's time to push the trigger time to make something happen but you're so much faster you see how much faster you are still have to remain patient not to mention those 11 second place finishes now he's embraced it he said you know I'm I want to win but second's pretty good and I'll take 11 of them all right the other thing you have to start doing is how going to pass this guy where is it that I am going to be able to take advantage of his car cuz clearly he's lost control of it where is my car good and his car is bad Corner entry is certainly a place that looks like to me cre can be more aggressive Jeff I know you got your hands full driving your own car but can you watch like right now is he watching Bell and saying man he is really loose off four I could take advantage of him there or can you look at another driver and find those weaknesses yes but at the same time at the RAC trck of every racetrack in the country this is the one that you have to focus on yourself the most so because it's so easy to make a mistake and as you start to catch him it's going to be a little more difficult you're going to start to get in that position where he starts to take air away from your car you're going to lose a little bit of down Force that's when it's going to get more difficult last time through one and two it looked to me that the 18 ran almost a half a lane lower and I think it's purely for that air you're talking about let's see if it happens again he goes down into one and two they both kind of enter the same this time it's the opposite the 20 is low the 18 goes to the wall and the 18's going to stay on that wall that high kind of Denny Hamlin esque exit and I love that move I think that was a way better approach to this it's 3/10 of a second coming up on nine laps to go here at Darlington bail in the wall and look how close the 18 is now now all the pressure's on Bell he knows the 18s better he has run him down from a long way back looks to the inside he's got clean air on the nose now right up against the back bumper here comes the 18 ced's going to pass him coming out of two ced's leading in Darlington Bel just has nothing left nothing to fight with he's going to give it a shot fires to the inside but as long as the 18 doesn't overdrive the middle it should be an easy Corner exit for the 18 of creed back into the gas goes Bell eight laps remaining Tony hman is spotter tons of experience I think now is when it's very important to help keep shelden Creed focused here it is you said it Bale has nothing to fight with fre drives in the corner gets to his rear bumper and already Bell's out of control but now live the 18 is nearly in the wall off turn four that's what you can't have happen you mentioned it coaching back a little bit seven to go 92 previous starts for Sheldon Creed and 11 times he has finished second looking for that first first career win and could it come at the track too tough to tame race the track do not worry about Chris Bell you have him beaten do not give it to him oh but if there's any track that's the toughest to race it's this one oh yeah Kim and when I talked to Sheldon this morning he said this is my favorite track winning here would be everything and talking about his 11 runnerup finishes he says I don't think I've lost race the same way I feel like I'm running out of ways to lose them which means it's got to come sometime the win he was talking about well and just that phrasing ways to lose them he's finished second you have to praise what he has been able to do in his career he's got a second place finish here it was in 22 now five laps to go 16 slow this is exactly what oh big damage to the right front we have the 16 slow in the racetrack we have traffic in front of bell let's see what's happened to the 16 he and kuster have been racing a lot kuster into the wall got him slowed down alond Dinger didn't judge it correctly and he's slow on the RAC track caution comes out there will be another restart all right Steve it is it's going to be you know overtime a shootout a big hit there for alond Dinger yeah we kind of got to it late and Jeff and I are both wondering why there was a yellow cuz he looked like he was just slow but we didn't see this a huge hit for the 16 of almond Dinger going in the middle of one and two forces the caution now without out a doubt it's tires for everybody it's going to be all on the pit crew and remember Creed has led on the restart and Bell has pass him on new tires so it's not just pick crew but adjustments no more long run no more Save Tires no more how does your car hold on air pressure up maybe some wedge in whatever you can do to add total grip to your race car if you could afford tape put it on downforce matters everything this is basically a Sprint of a finish as you get it Darlington and I also think mindset matters Sheldon Creed cannot get in his head they don't want me to win everything keeps going against me you can't think like that you still have to stay positive you have to say all right I'm going to get to battle Christopher Bell a Cup winner a guy that could win Cup championships I have the privilege to go race him for win it you can't let doubt creep into you let's listen into the 20 radio of bell you'll probably have some guys that St so it's going to get interesting I don't know that's starting up there with him we got a shot at it what do you think uh no I don't want to stay out I agree with Christopher Bell so there are 24 cars in the lead lab I think what the crew chiefs think is someone's going to throw a Hail Mary and try to do all these things new tires wins this race if if you start anywhere inside the top 15 as wide as this track is I would say from 20th you pass everyone in two laps it's that big of an advantage the tires are here I mean I think you could run the apron a second or two seconds faster than cars on these tires you have to come to Pit Road the other conversation as I read all these radios is what do you need for two laps just two laps your car is going to drive quite a bit differently I agree with bell I would rather lose with new tires than sit out there and get run over 47 Laps on tires you have to pit if somebody stays out on Old Tires they'll be running 15th by the time they get to turn one I I if not backwards yeah I just don't see any way you can't pit absolutely totally agree it's not even a question you know some tracks you would say two tires an option I don't feel that's an issue here the left for tire completely wears out there is so much pressure right now on these pit Crews because as you mentioned tires are going to win this race and the fastest guys to get off of Pit Road after a successful four tire stop is going to put you in position to where you can command the restart and here they come to you Kim and this will be the money stop everybody hoping for something solid you see Cole kuster top left just overall grip he needs it's going to be four fresh Goodyear tires to noo fuel Sheldon cre just a little free in looks a little slow though on the right side of that change four fresh Goodyear tires sooko or actually no sooko fuel Dave four Goodyear tires for Justin Aly he can afford tape on the grill he's got engine temperature room for that Marty Christopher Bell told Tyler Allan I need to be freed up for this restart now it's up to the 20 team can they beat their teammates the 18 off Pit Road the clean stop so far for the 20 Bunch Bell has been very good he said the car was not really bad on that last run you see the 18 coming down Pit Road Two Bells left and there goes Christopher Bell looks like Christopher Bell will Le frog his teammate here on Pit Road more than just his teammate the 18 of creed just an awful stop they lost two spots it looked like very slow on the right rear let's take a look exactly what happens he comes in on his Mark just like you need the driver to do right front off right rear slow off slow on Jackman waits as long as he can he goes to the left side I mean it doesn't look like much but you get a little behind on the right rear and that's it you see the frustration they know their driver put themselves in position to win they had this crew right here had two of the fastest three stops of the entire day they have been near nearly perfect all day but it's really easy to kick a field goal in practice it's really easy or easier to kick a field goal in the first half that game-winning field goal the one where you know everybody's on you that's the hardest time because much like a driver Jeff you almost try too hard well look clearly this is not what Sheldon Creed needed by any means but stay in the game anything can happen at Darlington we've seen many times at Darlington crazy things happen it is not what he needed at all but this race is not over there is still a lot of things are going to happen here so we've mentioned second place finishes for creed let's take a look at the last two for him a late restart at Lowden he finish second to Christopher Bell then we go to Michigan late restart he finish the second to allar a slow Pit Stop gets him off of Pit Road third they will go to the choose he'll start in the second row you choose the outside of that second row Bell probably will take the outside I think he's just got to look and see where they go in front of him look at this Pit Stop talk about the bad stop from Creed's team but B's team stepped up had the right stop at the right time one thing Steve that's happened in the infinity in the Infinity Series is the single l in cup has greatly affected these teams cuz typically you would see Cup teams hitting you know cuz they both had five L it's essentially the exact same car that's not the case anymore and so we've seen much more inconsistent pit stops on Saturdays because of that influence well you asked where they were going to choose I think if I'm Creed I line up behind Bell wherever Bell lines up I'm just going to assume he's going to get the best jump I want to go with him so let's take a look Bell takes the Top If I'm Creed I take the top behind Bell which is what he does think that's your only chance right is is to follow the you got to assume the leader of the race is going to get the best jump so you got to follow him through in the second and then try to figure it out we haven't talked a lot about Cole kuster he's going to start on the inside of Row one in a two-lap shootout he's got a shot at this team let's listen in to the 18 radio a little pep talk here before this final restart job it's okay we're all good here bud we're still in this I know you can do it we got the best car out there best driver Darlington let's go do it there you go and that was Creed that started off saying good job guys well listen I I I understand Creed where he's at but I do agree when they say they the best driver at Darlington what he has done here before and that long run he just made was super impressive just the question is when you take a car and it comes down to two laps with all this grip Jeff you know the little bit of car advantage that Creed had that's kind of gone at this point all these guys have made adjustments well look at the stat most races well with the pass in the final three laps Daytona you expect tala you expect but not Darlington and the reason I said earlier anything can happen is because of this because Cole kuster is going to be doing all he can to win the race is there going to be contact with he and Christopher Bell we don't know what's getting ready to happen stay in the game fre two by two out of turn four it's overtime presented by Credit One [Music] Bank a great restart by that dble zero Cole Custer he throws it into turn number one but Bell on the outside he's going to clear him coming off a two oh and contacts made they slide down the racetrack now Bell back to the high side kuster down low Creed still in striking position white flag goes in the air one more time around bell with a one carlink advantage kuster now two car links back bell pulling away down the backstretch the contact was made on the the first lap up to the restart and Bell now coming out of turn four it's going to be his first Darlington win in the expin series Christopher Bell is going to win at the track too tough to tame driver way to go great work excellent job tip of the cap to Tyler Allen by the way that's win number seven for the 20 team this year take another look at the restart you can see everybody really did a nice job on the start lot of pushing and shoving right here d0o auster a good run and then right here there's some contact they both run down the racetrack and at this point I think C is going to come flying on the outside just didn't have enough Pace didn't have enough pace and I can assure you that is the lowest angle the 20 or the d0o of Ard look at this they are five Lanes down the racetrack turning back to the wall to turn in the corner we talk about simulating engineering and all of this that's race car driving right there there's nothing about what they just did that was better it was just an amazing talent behind the wheel of the 20 and the D zero they both made a few turns three and four what a drive and I agree with Chris for great pit stop right I know the 18 had their issues but if the 20 doesn't have a great stop then the double Zero's controlling this race and the best Carl short runs won right he had the fastest Carl short runs he got what he needed he was in trouble with the long run but he got the pit stop and got the short run Christopher reell makes it happen it's tough to find Victory Lane in the xinity series in 2024 you see the gloves coming off of Creed a third place finish for him and a celebration for Bell [Music] over time restart to win int and Christopher Bell collects The Checkered Flag gives it to a fan out there wow what a finish here in Darlington let's talk about that overtime finish the contact from Co Custer how did you keep your car in line after it uh I don't know I really need to see a replay of it that was wild for sure and Darlington is just such a tough race RAC track and off of two whether you're on the bottom or the top it like flushes you to the wall and then you kind of get a little bit of a wiggle coming down so uh once again I feel terrible for Sheldon you know to essentially win the race pass me on the long run there and then uh lose the lead on Pit Road is is a big bummer but uh really really happy to win this in the Sport Clips Camry Tyler Allen what can I say man he's uh he's been killing it this year and I'm just lucky I to get to drive for him you had a great car but how much more rewarding is this win knowing what you guys had to overcome today yeah I mean uh I don't know it seemed like our car was really good on the short run obviously the 18 Sheldon was really good on the long run so unfortunately for him the race played out differently unfortunately for us uh we got her another shot at it and your Pi crew helped out too that's right yeah those guys uh those guys won us a race and um without them I'm not going to win the race so thank you to the pick crew as well Christopher Bell a winner at Darlington Dave that makes him two for two in xinity series wins here this year Sheldon Creed standing by shaking your head you can't believe it can you no uh I lost one the same way a few years ago here just this has always been a really good place for me and I've always loved racing here just uh man I don't know what to do to be any better than that I feel like I put in one of my best performances today um and yeah I just I love my pit crew and they do a great great job for us so I can't I can't blame that on them that we just got beat on Pit Road today so bummer and they had two of the earlier they had two of the fastest pit stops on the day you knew that and you knew you wanted to win at this place that's so historic and where you're so good yeah I uh I don't even know what the caution was for but it just man it's a bummer I'm so proud of everyone at job's racing on this 18 team friends of Jacqueline Toyota I took a chance on myself and and we brought all the money we could I'm literally not even making a dollar this year so it just hurts when they get away like that and especially here at at one of my favorite places next week Rick next week and Dave that is the Perfect Analogy of thrill of victory and Agony of defeat you saw it right there Christopher bell all smiles happy he was able to save it after even this contact way down the race track you see the 18 of creed come into the picture but it was because of that late restart the caution coming out for AJ alond Dinger getting into the wall that Creed had to come to Pit Road and now it's Christopher Bell that's celebrating his first xinity series win at Darlington we'll be back over a whole season it takes a whole season to make the playoffs but this might be one they have circled if they're fortunate enough to make it in a few more weeks Jeff yeah he came came in 15 points that first win let's go to the peacock pit box with DJ and KP and Marty thank you Rick terrific call the end of the race there what a wild finish it was with uh somehow Christopher Bell coming through with this so Kyle how in the world I'll ask himim I'll ask you what Kim asked Christopher Bell after the race how in the world did they not wreck on the backstretch after that restart so I'm kind of with Christopher Bell I don't know let me see it and that's what he said you know he he had no clue but I think the fascinating part when you watch it was that he and and Cole kuster got together but they didn't lose any ground to the to the 18 of of creed creed never gained on you would think at this point in time Creed is catching up going to be blowing bomb him no Creed got a run on him but he couldn't do anything with it so that was the fascinating part to me they just misjudged at that point in time but I said it in the pre-race take take take don't give anything and they were taken yeah you know that's that's just a tough loss you know when you're Sheldon Creed and trying to get that first in to break through you know you're tired of answering questions about it he did everything he needed to do there today you know certainly he he didn't show the speed that the 20 car and Christopher Bell did on any restart or any time during the day but I think between the setup that he had and the way that Sheldon Creed attacks this racetrack it it long it puts him in a position for that long run and you expect he had done everything perfect uh just a little contact by AJ alinger into to Cole kuster is the reason that that I mean it was legitimate caution flag that had to be but just and for Sheldon Creed he he did he doesn't need to hang his head here he did his job perfectly and I'm going to tell you something he might go he he might not win before the playoff start but he might win half of them when they get in there that's exactly right you can see how uh upset he was after the race and we just saw the shot of Sam mcau as crew chief talking to him I mean Kyle what do you say what do you say at that point it's it's great see Chase OT come by and say something as well after the race there's nothing you can say there there's nothing you can't say I I but I want to be be clear here and he said something and you made a comment about it he said something I'm not making a dime this year I'm driving this car I took every dollar I could raise bag borrow and steal and put into this took a chance on myself he because he believed in himself and that's my point he believed in himself so the point is yeah he's a little he's down let's admit it let's he he's he's finished second he's lost races this way but to believe in yourself that much says something about Sheldon cre he's a there there's something deep inside there and I'm with Dale once he bust that first win off it's they're going to flood dude he he's owed so much from the racing God it's going to flood through and DJ I talked to him after finishing second in Michigan when he broke your and Daniel hr's record and he said I read the comments on social media I take it very personally how does he move on from this how does Sheldon Creed move on and continue to try and show up every week well I think the biggest thing is don't worry about what everybody else is you're doing your damn job he is doing his job all this nobody else is putting themselves in that position that many times he's putting himself there and one of these days everything is going to work out at the end you know it might be somebody else's Misfortune they might have the slow pit stop you don't know how this is going to happen but he has proed he should be here and the people that are out there are saying that he doesn't have what it takes to win they they are not being fair and most of them have never driven a race car so they need to just be quiet but his best thing is don't worry about what anybody else says do your job A's doing some strong comments from you DJ at the end of the day it's Sheldon Creed winding up third it was Cole kuster who finished second Kim is with him and Cole kuster will have to settle for second place walk me through that overtime restart what did you need differently or need to do differently oh that's tough I mean I maybe could have got a tick better start and I think I almost cleared him into one but it's just hard racing I mean that was it was a lot of fun racing with Christopher there um just trying to stay in the throttle you know I don't know if some if he came down or I came up off turn two but you're just trying to do anything you can to try and uh you know clear the other guy off turn two so um it was tough racing hard racing but it was fun this this place is a blast I mean it was so slick today I mean the first run it felt like you're just on ice on an ice rink so uh it was really cool this hos animation Ford Mustang was fast as Xfinity internet today and it was we came back from a lot we qualified 21st and just a testament to what this team can do we can really come back from a lot after back to back weekends of finishes that weren't to your liking how important even though you didn't win today's race was the performance you guys had today huge I mean you kind of starting off feeling like yourself a little bit you know so to have a really solid run and you know a a race where you really came back from a lot of adversary adversity means a lot so um that definitely gives us some confidence going in the next few Cole kuster continues his strong stats here at Darlington Raceway so DJ there were no playoff points involved and and didn't gain a whole lot on Justin alar but youed said it in pre-race how badly do they need a day like this oh huge huge confidence builder for them now they're back you know they're sitting there I think it's 28 points that is back right now that is very manageable they have three tough races uh left to go now granted just an alar is a stage one and two machine you know and and so trying to gain points on him is tough but it can be done you know and you don't know when someone else your competitor might have that type of problem also so I think just a big big day in we still got a bit battle on our hands here's the regular season points Kyle and so when you lose 89 points in two weeks anytime you can kind of just stop the bleed and it's all good and and that's it and what I liked about this team today is they finished ninth in segment one they finished sixth or seventh in segment two and then second in the race so they built as the day went they got better as the day went that's what you want to see from a team you want to see a team who starts off and maybe we're a little bit off but we make adjustments and we put oursel back in the game and we make something out of the day that's what he did today speaking of building throughout the day it wasn't a spectacular day for Chase Elliot but he winds up fourth and he's with Dave Chase Elliot ends up fourth and Chase it seemed like you needed those couple of pit stops to get the car right and then move forward yeah we were um we were okay I honestly think our car was fine I just I've been struggling at this place really bad so you know I honestly use a lot of the event just to try to work on myself and and better myself for tomorrow and really appreciate the opportunity from Greg and uh everybody at hendrik Motorsports hendrickcars.com uh Rick you everybody for letting me do that um you know that's a that's a nice luxury to have not everybody has that so uh thankful for that opportunity and I felt like I picked up a couple things that will hopefully help us tomorrow um we'll see we're going to need it we got a long ways to go so um really you know proud of the effort though pit stops were great and that was what you know earned us a good finish there at the end was was the boys on Pit Road so I really appreciate their effort we talk about how little translates anymore so is Darlington the most reps friendly place if you can run on Saturday I kind of think so um you know personally and you can tell that by how many guys are in the field today too so you know darlington's Darlington and and my struggles here have been Universal from from car to car so we'll uh we'll see you tomorrow so Dave makes a great Point Chase makes a great Point as well so uh might be the most universally translatable from a Saturday to a Sunday Kyle and and and he said it Chase said it hey I learned some things that might help me tomorrow night all that matters is that he believes that that he believes that today helped him that he believes that he learned something today that he can take in tomorrow's race because that translates to confidence and another example of just how tough it was for the drivers today when Chase got out he just poured water all over himself it was a warm one here in Darlington South Carolina Scott mclin on the poll tonight Joseph nard won the poll for the race tomorrow that Championship race heating up and it'll all happen tonight on peacock from Milwaukee so we talked about the xinity series playoff picture and and DJ an interesting final over time restart for Ryan SE who lost a couple of spots and and now he's below the cut line by 10 yeah Ryan SE had run somewhere around that 10th to 14th Place all day long and you thought that you coming here and he might get a good restart I don't know if he got a bump from behind there spun the the the tires and uhto yeah just put him way back and so you when you have Sammy Smith getting I believe 11 stage points through the day and then he goes on and has a great top five finish um you know this is what can happen it can flip that quickly KP and every Point's going to matter right here yeah listen we talked about it early on we talked about Ryan SE and what he needed to do we talked about Sammy Smith what he needed to do Parker everybody Ryan SE is the one that didn't do what he needed to do out of the four that we talked about before Sammy Smith came in here and drove a solid race we saw him get into the wall a couple times like you said he gets 11 or 12 Stage points he runs consistently in the top four or five he makes a 25o swing he goes from minus5 to plus 10 uh that's a big day for those guys guys they look to be headed in the right direction afterwards Kim caught up with Sammy Smith and Sammy Smith will come home in the fifth position also earned stage points in both stages so now you've hopscotched back into the playoff picture was this the kind of performance you were looking for today it was yeah I apologize for sitting down um the cool shirt broke so it was a a tough day but yeah it was a great day to get stage points and and have a good finish there at the end we needed that and just thank you to Pilot Flying J TMC uh All State peer belt group Chevrolet my whole eight team and we'll just keep digging these last three races you mentioned the cool suit failing that was relatively early in the race how hard was it to focus in the race car being how hot it was today um yeah it wasn't too bad once we kind of got going it's just then you start to think about it there towards the end but yeah it was tough but um just had to keep digging and I'm glad I was able to finish it off for my team top five finish here for Sammy Smith all right DJ you said in the pre-race it would be tough for Samy Smith to gain some points today not only did he do it he finished top five today but did it without the cool suit how impressed were you with what he was able to deliver this afternoon yeah well I appreciate that yeah yeah I mean that's why you work out during the week you know you condition yourself for these type of conditions because you go through the summer months everywhere is going to be pretty hot but this is a tough place whenever you don't have that and when you're kind of used to having that so uh great job by Sammy Smith here all the way around all day yeah and I'm going to say this and DJ knows this as as even back when we drove and didn't have cool suits you noticed the heat on Pit Road you noticed the heat under caution when you're out there and you're focused on what you need to do you don't notice the heat that much it's it's melting you down believe me you it's hot but you don't notice it as much and I think that's what Sammy Smith was saying we focused on the job at hand we had to get some points we had to run up front we had to do what we had to do and we did it cool suit or not a couple of impressive performances right behind Samy Smith Jesse love winds up six SVG wound up seventh list here from most drivers starting with Dave six for Jesse love today and uh we we're just laughing you could go another 147 did you wear out the other guys yeah you and me both I I was tired as I look out the race I think that's uh what probably helps me the most at the end of them is uh just being able to sit up on the wheel but uh C4 energy is what gets me through these hot ones every weekend and it's been a while since uh I've executed like SP internet haven't been obviously um getting the finishes or the results that we wanted but um we've been this fast the entire summer it's just I think my yellow stripes in the back of them are were showing a little bit and I just had to um I guess reel it in a little bit and not try so hard and uh Travis sharp text me before the race stopped caring so much so I kind of took a step back today Danny Lawrence gave me a pep talk uh my pit crew kept me in the hunt all day they did a phenomenal job and I'm just proud to drive this wheel engineer number two car and looking forward to uh good night land next week and my Sam SAR colors that's a racetrack that probably owes this one so looking forward to getting to it um got my mom my sister my dad dad's watching from home but happy to have my family here with me Jesse haven't you been told by others this is a place that rewards that sort of pulling back I don't know I you look at Larsson and you think you have to damn you know balls the wall but uh I just kind of underd drove it a little bit today and let the people come back to me Shane Van gisbergen comes home seventh at Darlington at an intermediate oval does this almost feel like a bit of a win for you and this team oh of course not you want to be further out but as great day you know qualifying kind of struggled in both cars but when the race started weather weather tech Kamar was really good and I just got comfortable picked my way forward and had a blast doing it knowing that there are ovals in the playoffs we know you can get it done on road courses does the progress you're showing on these ovals set you up for success in your title run yeah it's certainly looking more promising now it's been a slow and gradual run and cuz um I still feel like I'm driving Within Myself a bit and really conservative especially at the start of the race and then then I get going so once I get more aggressive and but yeah certainly coming here for the second time I I felt way more comfortable straight away so had a lot of fun a great solid day for SVG that comment Kyle that's what he told me this morning second time to racetracks I'm going to be a lot more aggressive and he certainly played it that way today and I love his attitude before that overtime restart he said man this is just awesome fresh tires at Darlington this is going to be fun listen you catch on the that quick no matter how many times you've been to Darlington you catch I love that's what I used to say when I got get out of the car cheers mate good good but but you look at this and he did he learned a lot I think there were moments that he was overly aggressive we saw him get in the corners of people that's not something you want to do at Darlington he got away with it two or three times the day but when I look at it you expect a driver of his caliber to learn remember this too he's racing at the sharper end of the stick right now he's running against guys that are fifth sixth seventh and eighth he's not running back there at 17th or 18th like he was the first time we ran here so DJ everybody in the Xfinity series garage knows how good he is at road courses clearly improving at oals is he a legitimate Championship contender in your mind huge Improvement obviously on the ovals I'll just set up the playoffs as they come around I think there's a place called The roal that's going to be in there and a place called Talladega that's going to be in the next one yes he can go through the this and be a part of it great Point terrific Point by you Shane Van gisbergen certainly showing some muscle here at Darlington today but tomorrow night it's the southern 500 anascar Cup Series Jewel and the final race of the regular season we'll talk about it next stay up stay up stay up watch goid left bottom the window check flag yeah 500 Ben h awesome good you know this race is all about you keeping your head in it 500 baby hell yeah one of NASCAR's Crown Jews also caps off the regular season the playoffs start next week at Atlanta but first up almost four hours of racing 500 miles at Darlington Raceway so DJ if you could if you can narrow it down what makes the southern 500 one of the toughest races or arguably the toughest race for 74 years on the NASCAR calendar you we talk about the difficulty of the racetrack in itself in driving this I mean we talk about it for one lap in qualifying how hard it is we talk about it once the tires get five eight Laps on them that becomes increasingly more difficult with each lap at you go you're talking 500 miles around here it's going to take four hours to run this race tomorrow night and when they start it's going to be around 90 degrees when they take the green flag for this and so it's not going to cool off a lot they talk about today 200 miles in what these guys were feeling so it is just so difficult to do your job drive as hard as you need to drive throughout the entire 500 miles to position yourself there and then reach down and get what you have to have to win the southern 500 yeah I I I honestly believe if we could take this pit box and go back in a time machine to 1950 when they ran the first race here and we had it over on the front stretch where the front stretch and you interviewed these drivers they would say the same thing these drivers today say they would talk about how tough this race track is how slick it gets how it eat Tire eats tires how hot it is down here in September August and September how bad it is and how bad butt this place is and always has been and it's been that way since 1950 since 1950 and you put Dell Jarrett's name in the Hat you put Kell yarber's name in the Hat put Richard Petty and David Pearson and Fireball Roberts and go back in time to the greats that have won here it elevates this place to a totally different level to a totally different level not only in what goes on on the racetrack but in the minds and in the heart of these guys that come here and run it's a special place so frustrating for you in fact you said let's fill it up and make it a fishing pond and let's hold a hold a bass tournament here live bass fish Stadium bass fishing Stadium bass here here's how the playoff standing shape up and uh Bubba Wallace on the wrong side of the cut line DJ but he's on the poll for the southern 500 does that add or take away pressure from Bubba tomorrow night yeah I don't I'm not sure that it actually does either but what it does I think it gives him confidence to know he has the fast car that he needs to go make this happen he's run very well here recently and I think he puts himself in that position he's going to make everybody else but I think Chris bucher's going to be right there too when you watch practice um he had really really good speed in that car as they ran on older tires and remember Chris buer had probably the best car here in the spring as well a little mad with Tyler reick at the end of the race felt like he took the win from him Kyle that that says it all 21 drivers could win the race tomorrow night and find their way into the 24 playoffs I I think the question is as you look at that it should be a game show who wants it more you know I mean because that's what it's going to I I think we saw in that first qualifying session when Bubba Wallace came off a turn four my God he wants it yes he did he showed that he wants it that was an amazing lap to watch I've not seen many laps like that in my career watching people qualify that wanted it that bad but he wanted to put themselves in a position we talked about it at pre-race our our Jour qualifying from here on the pit box it starts now his weekend starts now and he made it start perfect and I know that we showed 21 drivers there but we should have shown 21 pit Crews too who's pit crew is going to do their job to put their driver in that spot just as today happen saw that today we'll see you tomorrow night as well uh speaking of drivers trying to get everything out of their car Kyle here was Ricky stouse Jr in practice today yeah just trying to get a little bit more and you heard him say it when they interviewed him after this accident I just stepped over the line I was just experimenting trying to figure where I was at trying to get a little bit more up off the corner pushes a little bit turn snaps itself loose and they got to work on this thing and they've been working on it ever since we saw that footage this morning yeah they were not able to make a qualifying effort they will start shotgun on the field Dave has a live update from the cup series garage how are the repairs coming Dave they are the last ones in here NASCAR is giving them just about another 18 more minutes to finish up what they want to finish up crew chief Mike Kelly who's one of the guys underneath the front of this race car told me they're just finalizing some things especially with the underpan of this race car uh to make the NASCAR specs they will roll back through Tech uh tomorrow
