welcome to the Michigan golfers show with your host bill Shelton join us each week as we explore the people the places and the events that shape our great game welcome to the Michigan golfer mentioned South Bend Indiana and most people immediately think of cheering crowds and scoring touchdowns but for the golfer the South Bend area has another meaning some outstanding Gotham opportunities John Martin our reporter recently toured several of those courses and is going to visit with some of the people who bring the best Gotham possible to you from the rolling hills of Indiana hi I'm John Martin with the golf us we are the publishers of the Indiana golf and travel guide as well as we have a website called golf us calm which features golf courses in Indiana and surrounding states today we'd like to take you on a tour of Indiana and we're going to start out in the northern region the northern courses that we'll be featuring today in Indiana will be Blackthorne Golf Club Warren Golf Course of Notre Dame Judy Creek and Swan Lake Golf Resort my name is Tim fires on the head golf professional here at black thorn golf club in South Bend Indiana the golfers design by dr. Michael Hudson he did a terrific job of mixing traditional golf with modern golf we've got a lot of different types of golf balls out here the golf course is about 70 100 yards from the back tees with a slope of 135 we are nationally ranked fourth best new golf course in 1994 by Golf Digest we are in the top 5 in Indiana and any publication that you would look at we have a terrific golf course here bentgrass tees fairways and greens 18 holes we have a unique thing here at black thrown we have a blarney hole it's the first law you play it's a practice hole it's kind of neat thing doesn't count designed by bill Corr of Ben Crenshaw home of the University of Notre Dame men's and women's golf teams we're standing here on the 16th hole which is just off of our Clubhouse just a stone's throw from the back door to deceiving par for June 8th Creek to go across on your tee shot and then it's uphill to a very undulating green you'll see the bunkering off to the left-hand side bill coram Ben Crenshaw I have an associate of theirs many of a Jeff Bradley here's their bunker specialist all the courses that they do Jeff handles they're bunkering and sculpts them out of the earth on his own and does a tremendous job that's one of the design aspects for bill Corr and Ben Crenshaw that have gotten to be very well known of and that's Bradley's bunkers like to welcome our neighbors down from Michigan to plants at any time we've got a wonderful golf course can make tee times up to seven days in advance just avoid football weekends because it does tend to get a little busy especially when we have our Michigan neighbors in town for some great football but we have a wonderful golf course love to see you down after this brief break we'll be back to visit Judy Creek and the Swan Lake
