fastball Change-Up curveball and a rose Arena was over three with a couple of strikeouts against Great Britain and Nate were throwing him nothing but off speed stuff let's see how this your stressney but the pitch was up and away from him we've talked about him all throughout this pool play how he is such a great fastball hitter but he's had a couple of rough games lately you mentioned 0 for three with two strikeouts last night three two foul back just over Buck Martinez head I had it all away and it's three and two both these managers have had their ups and their downs just in the last four days Benji Gill of course that loss to Colombia that was the down but the Wipeout of Team USA it's one of the best wins that Mexico has had in the classic a Rosarita checks his swing is on his way to First shaking that right hand yeah and you can see the unbarratory is the homepage umpire asked at first base whether there was a swing attempt in the first base umpire also a major league um Parish that no swing that endings is down at first base and here's the pitch and it hits well I don't know if it hit his hand it looked like it hit his back it looked like it hit above his top hand let's take another look at him this is reviewable but I don't know if there's definitive video evidence to overturn tell you what it was pretty clear to me I mean just looking at it and Canada they're gonna look all right sure didn't and you know what they go to New York they look at the review of every angle they have of this bad attempt this is difficult to tell from this side it's so quick but it looked like it hit so high but he tries to sell it oh man I can't believe that didn't break my hand it didn't look like it hit his hand at all and they're taking a long look at it in New York again the original call holds enormous weight here you have to have a hundred percent certainty to overturn and if it is overturned it's simply a foul ball and he would come back and the count would still be three and two now the embarrassed telling the strzny that he can throw because of the extended weight on the decision from New York [Music] and he'll throw a couple of warm-ups and they have awarded him the first pace so we are on the field stands yeah we're not able to delineate between call stands and call confirm but my money's on call stands there yeah not enough to overturn yeah it wasn't that clear looking at the various angles we had on replay review but Canada loses their challenge I mean with the first hitter of the game that's a real Gamble wow that shows you the what's at stake in this game Ernie what took a chance here's Verdugo now and he takes a strike of course once you get past the seventh inning umpires can initiate the challenges on their own and as a manager you can go out and suggest I really would like they look at that Verdugo has had a tough classic he's one for 12. with One RBI the good news for Mexico the guys behind him have been really good menensis seven for 14. telez hit four Rockets last night got just one hit out of it so there's plenty of pop up and down this Mexico lineup there's rowdy [Applause] Canada turned three double plays early in the game last night yesterday afternoon excuse me against Colombia no eskira was terrific a starter Milan's five hits he faced the minimum over five innings because of those three double plays they could use one here oh two lined in a right field Casey is there and he makes the catch that's another bullet for an out and I hit it hard and you're right Rodrigo really hasn't had many good advance that was the best at that so far for him man that one right on the button s the Street's name he's arsenal of pitches four seam fastball to throw it a lot he drops the curveball in there occasionally The Change-Up is pretty effective to right-handed hitters Ney is from Edmonton Alberta Canada 30 years old he has pitched in the Cubs organization he is currently with the Pirates in spring training he has appeared in three games this spring already throw over the firsts it's a strzny was a college player played at the University of Missouri before the Cubs drafted him Vanessa's has been enormous his performance against USA will be talked about for a long long time not just in Mexico but also throughout international baseball in this tournament those two home runs in front of a sellout crowd we're quite a moment two home runs five RBIs in his game against team USA's first inning home run 109 miles off the bat and then the fourth inning home run it resulted in that terrific backflip oh it was the classic map flip certainly the best one I've ever seen in the classic a Rosarita is still at first and a little roller up third Toro charges and he's got no play and Mexico is set up first and second with one out and Rowdy Tellez is coming up now we told you about his dramatic home runs and this is the flip side of that a little dribbler up to Third Base Line toe makes a good decision here strizen is not going to get to it turo has no play and he wisely just passes it to the middle of the diamond and this is swinging by the third Baseline and Mexico has something going here early on [Music] so let's four for 14 but he's swung the bat better than those numbers especially last night one for four last nine hit the ball hard all four times you came to the plate and a strike he had a double and three Line Drive outs two of them to the Outfield so it was a good man to have up right now if you're Mexico rosarina can run menensis not so much at first but he's not slow that one's fouled back to the screen yeah a red Arena can really run obviously and as he gets around the bases but he's certainly not a guy you worry about me as a speed burner Robbie Tellez matchup at least the starting matchup seems to favor Mexico Jose or Keady not only a major league starter but also a guy who has been one of the best post season starters and relievers over the last few years or Kitty gets the ball for Mexico zastrizny getting the start a lefty for Canada and oftentimes in these games that's a block so strizny with a huge mistake a Bach and now the double play is gone yeah and it looked as though he got confused with the signs he's set there and then you can see he broke his hands before he stepped off and that was clearly a bark I mean it was such an odd move tournament with a hamstring issue boom Naylor behind the play 19 pitches here [Music] the 2-0 both bullpens are ready to go it's sometimes in this format it's not the starting pitcher it's the second pitcher that proves to be important Andrew Albers a lefty for Canada will back up zastrzny and Luis sesa who pitched really well early in this tournament is the man that Mexico probably will go to after or Kitty he is probably loosening up if just strident can't get out of this inning but they do look for Albus to give them some length today and they'd like that length to come in the middle of the game but right now the urgency for Canada is Mexico first and second again man Danny Boucher the pitching coach for Canada comes out of the Dugout and he's trying to get things calmed down here a little bit and then really a hit better a couple of bloop hits and a walk but it's two nothing and you just can't wait around very long in a game of this magnitude got to make quick decisions and Team Canada does not necessarily have a deep Bullpen I mean they got a few guys they can count on but Billy Vermont is loosening up and if so strzny can't get out of the city Omaha will come on to try to get out of the inning and they may be Bridge another inning but Andrew Albers is the guy that they hope can give them two three maybe even four Innings out of that bullpen veggie Gill's done a wonderful job Here In This World Baseball Classic a world champion with the angels 2002. eight major league seasons has had a outstanding run as a manager in Mexico and maybe on a plane tonight to Miami especially if this keeps up rias takes a strike well it's all about pitching ahead and the scrutiny has not had that luxury so far in this game but you got to throw strikes and you've got to put the pressure on the hitter you can't pitch with nothing but hitter counts uh you're asking for trouble everybody gets better when they have the count in their favor as a hitter more relaxed you're more selective you're more patient and you're looking for your pitch there is a couple starts here in Phoenix came in defensively in the ninth inning last night [Music] outside corner [Applause] one and two yeah and we had mentioned not overpowering his fastball will be 89 maybe top out at 91. so he has to locate as he did on that last pitch [Music] a game seven or a game like this which has so much at stake can tip over in a hurry and it feels like Canada needs to get out of here and give up just the two runs and if Mexico pushes off a couple more runs across then all of a sudden that changes the whole dynamic of this game thank you it's a stressney sliding stop there Toro out there out there so Canada does hold it at just two but Mexico strikes first and they've got one of their Aces on the mound to start this game Rowdy teles into right field in a two-nothing lead for Mexico [Music] foreign lead not easy against this guy Buck Isaiah keaney 27 years old a terrific pitcher from Mazatlan Mexico of course he is with the Houston Astros for Big League Seasons with Houston a 24-13 career record last year I made 28 starts 29 games overall and pitched 164 on the third Julian rips that one Verdugo slid by him and Julian who has been a tone Setter for Canada little antler action is at second base he has been outstanding and of course he had a first pitch home run a couple games ago and he says you know what we're down already and I'm gonna get something going this fastball boy it goes right out of the heart of the play and he got a great swing he can really swing the bat and boy this is exactly what Canada needed after falling behind top of the inning Julian says hey fellas we're not done yet lots of baseball to be played he's at second here's Toro and he swings and misses well this is where Freddie Freeman would be in the lineup but he has that hamstring issue he is out of the pool plate from this point on but he spoke to his teammates today before the start of this game yeah I mean for and it's mixed feelings for Freddie I mean he really wants to be here his hamstring being examined today and so Ernie Witt knows they're gonna have to do it without Freddie to get to Miami yeah and Freddie he was terrific telling the team how proud he was he wanted to be here and he said don't forget I'll be watching boys so go after him go get him rakiti misses outside and don't forget that Canada fell behind Great Britain and it was Julian who came up down three nothing blasted a home run and it just felt like from that point Canada erased the memory of that three runs and went on to score 18 runs in that game Toro and that's going to be out of play all right the rest of this lineup for team Canada you've seen Julian Tyler O'Neill's had a really good series Otto Lopez had a really good yesterday with a triple and a home run and a solid classic for the young shortstop [Music] two and two on Abraham Toro Julian Bluffs Toro line drive base hit center field Julian a late start and the throw from Thomas has cut off wasn't sure if that was going to get in the reason he wasn't sure was he took a big break as if he were going to steal a third and then he was kind of out of position to get a read on it had he not done that he would have known this was going to drop you could see him break toward third now he's not sure where it is hesitation and Kim laper the third base coach has to stop him there's the hesitation in leapert getting an eye on the center field or Thomas says you know what nobody out let's let our big right-handed hitter hit here in this situation but because he was thinking about stealing 30 he had two three big steps toward third and he was out in no man's land when that ball was hit O'Neill has been Canada's best hitter here in Phoenix seven for 11. a couple extra base hits you got Jared Young the left-handed bat on deck Jose or Kitty [Music] with the 01 pitch and it's up we talk about a game seven and playoff pressure and winner goes to Miami or Kitty is built for this he has experienced this five World Series games two starts three relief appearances an era of 1.23 and a record of 3-0 yeah and he's 27 he's established he's pitched in great games before being important games much like this game so he knows what it's all about just has to minimize the damage here you have Runner with third base runner at first base you see the defense in the outfit especially shaded toward Right Center Alex Tam is a terrific center fielder on the right field side of Center [Applause] [Music] check swing did not go [Applause] O'Neill has driven the ball to the right side throughout the course of pool play here and there's a big gaping hole on the infield and if her Kitty continues to pitch him outside he's just got to take it the other way take advantage of it plus if you hit it to the opposite side of the infield the much more difficult ball to turn two with now the 2-2 it's up [Applause] one thing we have learned about Team Canada is there's no give up in this roster they come back and they've got confidence they've got a lot of young prospects in this roster and they believe in themselves out of Lopez with a triple and a three-run home run in last night's game [Applause] breaking ball that was a strike and it wasn't called the strike the home plate umpire Carlos Torres putting his arms out or keedy is glaring in at him and he's still three-quarters away toward home and so Canada gets a huge break here that should have been strike three take a look at it where is it is it low boy it is kind of low we'll see from the side if it crosses his knee but it looks as though O'Neill took a close pitch and the call goes in Canada's favorite it's not an easy call but it did show right at the knees Jared Young and a fastball misses inside and so here is Canada here's another look all right touches the bottom part of the strike zone and could have gone either way obviously and she guilt thought it should have been strike three as did or Kitty Mexico gets two Canada has loaded the bases and young swings and misses it's one and one young is homered walked three times a couple hits this is game four for Canada here in pool C he had a big hit in the ninth inning yesterday against Colombia that set the table for Otto Lopez and his three-run Homer Lopez is on back it's out of the whole inning right man Ernie wood has a very productive young hitter Blue Jay's Prospect Otto Lopez triple in the eighth yesterday three-round home run in the ninth and he's got power to the alleys both left Center and right center they're playing him more towards that right center alley in the Outfield as or Kitty misses away all throughout the course of history hitters practice this situation man at third base less than two outs get something in the air keep it off the ground give your team a chance to score that's oh a strike that one was out but you see Austin Barnes snapped the glove back and he got the call [Music] yeah for me that's too much movement that should be a red flag to the Empire say hey you know what ketchupin sits outside why should I call it a strike I don't like that movement from catchers 1-1 Line Drive in a center field that's a base hit Julian will score Toro got a late start a run across and they're still loaded [Music] what a series for Anna third O'Neill to Second and Lopez Keeps The Bases Loaded [Music] best case scenario right now for Canada they gave up the two runs they've got to run across they've got the bags loaded and the next pitch from urkini will be his 20th remember 65 is the pitch limit so if you can run those numbers up early you may only have to face him for three innings here is Bo Naylor [Music] three infielders on the first base side and a strike to open the at-bat Naylor drove in the first run against Colombia with a base hit in the fourth inning in yesterday's game that gave them a one-nothing lead and he would add one in the eighth and three and a ninth and beat Columbia five to nothing that one catches the corner pitch limits in pool play 65. quarterfinals you get 15 more Championship round it's up to 95. or Katie out in front of the young catcher Owen two oh that looked like it had the zone 1-2 they went with the fastball after a couple of breaking bars too get ahead just up a little bit too high again another situation with two strikes you want to shorten up put the bat on the ball and try to get the ball in the air at a minimum you want to cash in the runner from third Toro foreign [Applause] that's low and in and Naylor with the count even at two balls and two strikes Julian double Toro singled the walk to O'Neill after Mexico thought they had him struck out shallow Fly ball from Young and Lopez found center field to drive that man in Julian nailer ready or Kitty ready and the 2-2 [Music] [Applause] jammed him and he fights it off we have talked about Freddie Freeman not in this tournament any longer with that hamstring injury but Team Canada has eight top 30 prospects on this roster each of them in the top 30 prospects of their respective team and that is eight total more than any other team in the World Baseball Classic so Ernie whisk up a lot of young players that are going to be the backbone of this team for a while Naylor swings and misses or Kitty gets a big strikeout and now there's two outs all right big curveball he started to get bad with a couple of curveball strikes trying to get Mayor to chase the high pass ball and finishes it off with another good curveball and you can see nearly way out in front of pitch to take tight spin on that breaking ball and difficult to identify and yeah it's low but you can't take close pitch like that with two strikes Owen Casey now on the younger end of the prospect list just 20 and he fouls it back and you kind of set the whole story line there in motion buck when you talk about Canada yeah they do have some Major Leaguers right but Freeman's not here anymore most of their team are guys between 20 and 24 and Prospects good prospects for sure Mexico is packed with Major Leaguers roller and that's Trejo on the shift who goes to First and gets the out Canada gets one back or Kitty gets out of the inning with just one run of damage this is a cave seven right winner gets a ticket to Miami and it's 2-1 Mexico foreign [Music] here at Chase Field Canada and Mexico here is a look at Ernie wit's Bullpen options today I would mention that Albers one name that we have not yet seen appear could Factor heavily in this ball game and Rich to one point you made earlier Canada has five position players in the lineup today who are 24 years of age or younger so certainly some youth on the pitching side we do not expect to see Cal Quantrill unless and until Canada reaches the quarterfinal all right JP thank you for that and we'll see which starting pitcher settles down first messy first inning hit a batter gave up a couple of hits but he did get that double play to get out of the inning the damage could have been much worse and you could say that certainly about her Kitty's first inning yeah they both lose 27 pitches and 16 strikes identical pitch count for both starters you know and there was a mark in the first inning too committed by the strinsky and you you think about wow Mexico really didn't hit the ball hard and he got out of it with a terrific double play started by Abraham Toler with third base Ellen Trejo Alec Thomas Austin Barnes bottom third of the order for Mexico Andrew Albers the guy that JP just noted he's a lefty as well he's he's probably a a guy they want multiple Innings out of but they'd like to do it in the middle of the game rather than right now and you saw Philippe up and loosening up as you've noted that was probably just to get out of the inning or maybe just get a few outs Mexico's got their guy lined up to pitch as well that's Luis cesa and her Kitty Sessa tandem is pretty darn good for Mexico they've got to feel good about that right now a lot of Major League experience and the flip side of it is the Team Canada is just kind of patching things together that's pretty good patching it together right there that's a strikeout and the first for zastrizny [Music] I hear him a good changeup right there this is an important part of the line of course is trisky he has to really handle the bottom third of this order and get back into Duggan and his hitters get back on offense Thomas terrific young outfielder of the Arizona Diamondbacks couple hits in nine trips he's kind of Built For This ballpark one of the reasons they traded for him from the White Sox good speed a lot of great coverage in the Afghan it's a very big Outfield here at Chase Field Diamondbacks have some really good young prospects yeah and you look at the Outfield speed Carol there another outfit with terrific speed they've got pitching we got a little defense pedrooma it's short snap number three prospect that was going into 2021 they don't have Jordan Lawler on there that's the shortstop that they really like here in the desert that's a fun team right now big gap in right center Thomas runs well and a 2-2 that is strike three called I think he may have heard the patching it together comment because he has carved up Trejo and Thomas well they have a couple of guys that they had hoped to have on the team and Nick pavetta and Jameson taione but this is a good fastball and Thomas is locked up back to back strikeouts and right down the middle he was looking for something soft and that's the best fastball that sisters has thrown to this point 94 miles an hour you just never know what starting pitching as as JP said it's unpredictable in this tournament here's Austin Barnes has a double among those three hits fastball up high sometimes you get Taiwan Walker like last night four Innings I mean he was an All-Star two years ago struck out eight he was dominant Lance Lynn looked all of that with his five innings against Canada and then sometimes you get Cal quantrol who came out you know coming off a career year with the Cleveland Guardians he didn't pitch an inning against Great Britain he went two-thirds of an inn and gave up three runs and left after 37 pitches yeah their first two starts they got a total of one inning combined from their two starters [Applause] walks Barnes that's going to bring a rosarina up and this is the benefit of having a rosarina in the lead-off spot if you got a guy in the ninth spot who's getting on or rosarina goes from igniter to provider yeah and that was the point I was trying to make about the bottom turn of the lineup you got to take care of business and you'd love to face a rose arena with nobody on and no ounce [Applause] [Music] yeah and you remember back of that at bat a rose Arena on a check swing had a ball that appeared to hit the bat maybe his finger it took him a while to start shaking and acting like it hurt [Music] but the replay was not conclusive and the call was and umpires will if it's anywhere near the finger and it appears to hit part of the finger and the bat and he didn't swing you're gonna get that call and a rosarina did in Mexico to their credit backed it up and got two runs in that first inning Rowdy telez with a two run single yeah and you take advantage of your opportunities and Randy rosarina has been terrific first two games he was on fire home run to the bullpen in left field to get opposite field doubles and he just did about everything he's getting a lot of fastballs early in this pool play not the case the last two games a rosarina hammers that ball and it's going to get to the wall Barnes around second headed for third and he's gonna score Mexico 3-1 How You Like Me Now [Applause] I Rose Arena made an adjustment and stays on that fastball away and hit it on the ground the two out rock to the catcher Austin Barnes costly in this inning but a rose Arena has been consistent in his ability to come up with big hits that's a good pitch he makes an adjustment Barnes running with two outs there was a hesitation and a double clutch by Owen Casey in right and he came up ready to throw and then he double clutched it in by the time he gets it back in Barnes scores all the way from first opposite field Line Drive which wasn't that high off the ground 110 miles an hour that's how it gets to the wall and Verdugo with a big cut and the Mexican fans now are starting to get into it Mexico has such a great following and they've been all over Phoenix for the last week [Applause] [Music] and Jab by Naylor getting over in front of that ball to keep a rose Arena from moving up Naylor's had a good four games here he's done a nice job calling games coming up with a couple key hits and doing a good job behind the pike Philippe I'm on back up in Canada's bullpen slow ground ball Lopez to his left gets there and gets the out Mexico adds a run [Applause] Jose urquidi threw 27 pitches in the first inning meaning this information could be relevant rather soon the good news for Team Mexico Adrian Martinez has yet to pitch in the classic he is rested and ready to go potentially for multiple Innings as is Luis Sessa so Benji heals Bullpen is in very good shape overall some more good news Rich for Team Mexico they've already scored more runs through two innings today than in last night's tense 2-1 win over Great Britain Denzel Clark in the left and that's the first out for Canada in a second hey JP we we took a look at how pitch limits kind of escalate into the quarterfinals and then into the championship round Mexico has one of if not the best rotation in the classic and it feels like if they get to Miami that becomes more of a factor it's an excellent point rich and certainly Mexico hopes that Julio Urias will be rested and ready to go if they reach the quarterfinal they would expect that to be the case we've saw it we saw last night just how great Taiwan Walker was as well Patrick Sandoval of course against Team USA Mexico has lived up to the billing as having one of the very best rotations if not the best rotation in the 2023 classic and that strength is more valuable as you advance through the rounds because of the pitch count they can pitch deeper into the game so Benji Gill the skipper has a very deep probably the best standing rotation in the entire classic when you consider the experience they have Jacob Robson who's done a nice job in the nine spot for Canada getting on base a couple walks and four hits in the first three games Edward julienne is on Deck Canada got a run in the first could have had more but her Kitty pitched out of it that one flipped into Center and it falls in front of Alec Thomas and a one-out single for Robson his fifth hit yeah we talk about Alex Thomas another good center fielder he is and he is a good center fielder but this is always a tough play for an outfit to watch Thomas happier screen he breaks back just a half a step and that proves to be costly as it drops in front of him and robson's had a nice run here in this pool sea or Kitty 27 pitches in that first inning Julian takes down low six for ten now is Julian two doubles and a homer JP Robson nice fit in that nine spot for Canada so far he is and the veteran on this team of all the nine position players in the game for Ernie Witt Robson is the most veteran he's 28 years old a majority of Canada's lineup is 24 years of age or younger Runner goes Robson got a good jump Julian pounds it foul yeah Bernie Whitt giving him the green ladder with first base trying to get something going and you know what I think Gertie's doing a good job with his team and he understands you just can't slug with the Mexico team you gotta utilize the speed you have on the bases in Robson of course Julian can put the bat on a ball we've seen that throughout this tournament [Music] now a 1-2 and a throw over there's a lot of red here today swinging to miss Julianne that is a rare time that he goes out of the zone and chases yeah he got surprised by that fastball okay he ran it play 3-1 Mexico on to the Third 12 years in the minor leagues and finally got an opportunity last year with the Washington Nationals drives it left field oh at the wall Robson went up and got it morosi talked about Robson in half he was a senior member of this lineup today he does a great job read it perfectly off the bat gets back to the warning truck and times his jump perfectly well look at the focus on those eyes as he stays on it to takes extra bases away from menesus has taken over and Applause for Robson here is teles and this has looked like he had hit another home run but it was Third line change for Canada and a 6-4-3 double play Mexico on top bottom of the third coming up it's 3-1 [Music] we saw Team Canada's aggression on the bases in the last inning and Rich and buck remember this 11 of 14 stolen base attempts against irkidi last season were successful ah good to know and Canada's Got speed Tyler O'Neill Jared young Otto Lopez bottom third rakiti much more economical in the second inning just 12 pitches 27 in the first little soft Fly ball and that's going to Nestle in for a hits and Canada has traffic again just like they did in the first and the second well for a second time in this game already out of Tennessee senator theater Alex Thomas broke back on this swing and mind you it's a breaking ball off the end of the bat you can see powerful Young's got some pop we have seen that instead of home running this is pool play C we'll see play he's not had a whole lot of hits but he's getting more comfortable with each at-bat he's worked a couple of walks lately of course he's in the lineup Freddie Freeman is out with that hamstring issue he's swinging a miss so tonight does Colombia have a little more game in them the United States and Overlook anybody compare games and say well they beat these guys no no these guys beat those guys that's a great Point yeah and you know let's go hammered uh Team USA yeah you just never know what's going to happen on a given night Otto Lopez had a soft line drive base hit back in the first it's gonna be interesting when when and not just with Canada but with others he missed the ball but took the brunt of it when a guy like Lopez goes back to ouch [Music] goes back to spring training goes back to camp and you know the major league executives are watching all their players that's rolled up the middle might be two Trejo flips Maria's the first in time and Mexico good defense behind Jose or Keady on to the fourth Mexico win and they're headed east [Music] as we begin our broadcast today we made the point sometimes the grandest games are decided by the smallest margins well consider this right now a two-run lead for Mexico and they've scored those two runs on a controversial hit by pitch and after a two out walk a hit by pitch a two-out walk right now the difference in this pivotal ball game yeah it's a game seven feel and for Mexico if they lose this game they are completely out they are done if Canada loses this game they're close to done I mean they still would have a shot but it's a long one Colombia has to beat the U.S and then they have to win I think a three-way tie-break formula and tie breaks have not been kind to Canada in the history of this tournament it feels like it's a must win for Ernie win and we know it's a must win for Benji Gill yeah I agree with that 100 nobody wants to be victimized by the tiebreaker rules just determine your own fate and do it on the field Philippe can still get it up there 92 at 6-7 and he's got parts of Four Seasons in the big leagues he's got some experience he understands if you can hold Mexico and there you see Advanced the quarterfinals is a number one seed because of their win over Team USA eliminated big home and it's different for Ernie wit's team he knows if he wins he goes to Miami but it's up in the air what happens if they should happen to lose yeah like I said they're gonna need Columbia to beat the USA and that throws him into a three-way tie break for that last spot Alec Thomas called that on strikes in the second you got Austin Barnes behind him for Canada the preferable number two pitcher in this game at least in the game plan was Andrew Albers that's what Ernie Witt had up his sleeve even it even a short sleeve but things didn't go well with his starter and so Amman is kind of like building a bridge to get to Albers who's up in the bullpen now and starting to loosen yeah man you know we talked about the bottom third there's Albers and he's a veteran of five major league Seasons he didn't play in 2022 he had elbow surgeries 37 years old now so he's the guy they hope can give them length come in here and really calm things down but we talk about the bottom third of the disorder it proved costly to that walk to Barnes back in the second turned into a run for Mexico [Music] [Applause] you know Mexico's got the good starter on the mounter kitty and much like with Taiwan Walker in the last game from Mexico that starter was dominant and Canada has to just keep it close right now until erikidi is out of the game and then take their fortunes against the Mexico bullpen Arcadia is at 49 pitches 65 is the limit so you would say he's got an inning left in him yeah for sure no one is even stirred in the Mexico pen at breaking ball and strike well and again you don't want to face Randy Rosary in this inning I know you're gonna have to get a double play to avoid that but a rose Arena had the two out double back into second and that's why managing the bottom 30 order is so important take care of those guys in the bottom mini orders so you don't have to deal with the big bats at the top of the order I don't want to face Randy orozarena in any inning he's had quite the run here balloon Robinson with his second good play of the afternoon [Applause] I wonder how it's going to go back at Dodger Camp when the two Dodger catchers get back you know how it's gonna go the stolen base that Barnes had against Will Smith yeah that's bragging rights man that was a great moment and moments that you get in in the World Baseball Classic when you have you know players from Major League teams that are of different nationalities playing for different teams and suddenly competing against each other wanted to Runner Goes Thomas on the way the throw from Naylor pitch to him got hit by a pitchers first at bat had an RBI double his second time up that was back in the second and he smoked that double on a line all the way to the wall in right center field 110 miles an hour off the bat and say rosarina looking at that outside corner kind of suggesting he thought it was off the plate outside he hit a good pitch as you mentioned down and away I mean it was a borderline strike away from him and he had a rocket to the alley there have been a couple of occasions similar to this in this tournament where opposing managers have had first base open just like this do you pitch to a rose Arena perdugo's a Big League hitter behind it but a rose arena is so good [Music] and both times he got a big hit there's a swing and a miss and the thing about a mom he is a veteran he's not pitched an awful lot in the big legs just a total of 43 Innings but it's pitched a long time and he's going to try to change speeds and and hit his spot and off-speed breaking ball back and forth just mix it up on a rose Arena nice job by Naylor to get out and smother it really good job he's quick behind the plate get out in front of the to keep the ball from getting away watch how quickly he moves to his rod and I love the fact that he is in that traditional catcher's stance see how much easier it is for him to get over there and get that bone as opposed to that one knee stance we see most of the time good job Bo I'm happy to report that Buck Martinez has not been down to one knee at all during this tournament 2-2 breaking ball fouled at the plates I can't get down on one knee I can't get down on two knees but Naylor is you know he's a good looking catching Prospect one of the best catching prospects in all of baseball he's a member of the athletic catchers Guild it's a a group of catchers around baseball that can run are athletic have power I never got inducted into that club no I couldn't run Harry Great Britain's Harry Ford is a future member of that club in the big leagues JT riyamuto who is in this pool he might be the uh he's the president yeah he's the president yes well questioned all right 3-2 let's see if he gets some to hit [Applause] foreign did he go no swing now you got the Lefty and you're probably going to get Albers out of the pen let's take a look at the pitch sequence in that big Advance Philippe Vermont finds the outside corner with that cutter missed with the second cutter down and Away got him to chase the slower breaking ball at 81 miles an hour the curveball is bounced in the dirt and he fouls off another slow breaking ball takes that one inside looks like I could change him and then checked his swing I'll tell you what that's a very close pitch watch this check swing indeed he did good call by the Umpire at first base I'll tell you what only one of those pitches was in the strike zone that is a great job by a veteran of pitching around a dangerous hitter yeah and he knew that they had hours ready so he did a great job just hoping to get a rosarina to chase all right 3-1 Mexico pitching change for Canada well here is Andrew Albers we expected to see him and he arrives with Runners first and second and two outs top of the fourth Alex Verdugo has lined out bounced out Albers with a fastball for a strike arthroscopic surgery on his elbow did not pitch in 2022 Mexico looking for some production out of verdugo's been in the two spot behind the rosarina the whole time here in Phoenix average is Now 37 years old this is his seventh appearance in the World Baseball Classic he pitched in 2013 and 2017. drafted in the 10th round out of the University of Kentucky he is from North Battleford Saskatchewan Northwest of Saskatoon he was away from Major League Baseball from 2017 until 2021 [Music] [Applause] they have the ball in wants to make sure that he's thinking the right way he's in the driver's seat owing to Thomas at second rosarina at first two apps Camp shot little Looper left field Robson lost it and then found it and makes the catch that was high anxiety in left field for Canada Robson made a great catch to take a hit from Joey Meneses and watch how he loses it in the bank of lights but hangs it there it makes a terrific catch to save another run thank you final day the party feels like it's just about to start for Mexico this is a game seven the winner goes to Miami Mexico an early lead Canada without Freddie Freeman trying to find some offense in this lineup Bo Naylor Owen Casey Denzel Clark as we arrive at the Young prospects section of Canada's lineup Naylor drives that left center field hits it well that Ball's gone foreign [Music] [Applause] was stunned we're telling you that Beau Naylor is running a tap catching prospects in all of baseball and he's got some power and opposite fee of the whole run the Deep left Center to get them going here in the fourth he has had quite a coming-out party here in the WBC look at the power look at this swing a breaking bar out over the plate and he stays on it that's big time pop when you go the other way deep Line Drive left the rosarina oh almost didn't get there one run game now Naylor's first Homer of the classic go back and look at the swing great extension on a pitch that was away from him and her Kitty the pitcher it can't imagine this ball is going to go but the ball is into the seats deep about eight grows back and her kid he says who was that guy I gotta write his name down [Music] Canada has had traffic in every inning left the bags loaded in the first had a single in a stolen base didn't score in the second leadoff hit in the third and didn't score but Naylor gives him their second run Mexico has stranded five and they're just one for six with runners in scoring position they better not let Canon to hang around and remember what happened in Mexico's last game after Taiwan Walker the starter was out of the game right Britain came back and tied it up more game after he was out of the game Denzel Clark strikes out pardon me there buck and uh Jacob Robson who had a really nice catch at the wall arise with two outs and nobody on [Applause] all right Robson spent last year AAA with Toledo Robson reminds me an awful lot of Adam Stern who is such an important part of Team Canada in 2006. they've got some big hits and made a terrific game-saving catch off the bat of Chase Utley right here at Chase Park same type of player Vargas getting ready pitch count this is number 59 and it's fouled back to the screen with 65 the limit this is probably it I if he brought him back out and I doubt he would do that just for one with their Kitty and for the Astros sake as well [Applause] you would think if he uh can get this out before he gets to 65. that he'll have four innings in the books and he'll be done for the day oh that had strike written all over it uh or Katie thought so he had taken about three big steps toward the dugout this big slow curveball and looks like it caught the bottom of the zone from the side it looks like it's low that's one of the toughest calls for an Umpire that big breaking ball which catches the zone at the front of the plate in fact that's one thing that the automated Strike Zone has done when they've employed it in the minor leagues they've moved the strike zone from the front of the plate where it traditionally has been to the midpoint of the plate [Music] swinging a miss or Kitty gives up a solo shot keeps the lead dances off the mound on our way back to the hotel a couple nights ago these gentlemen stopped the buck for some photos and some handshakes Buck Martinez a legend in Canada and they said hey by the way we're the hockey helmet guys as monesses takes high and there's a story behind those helmets Buck yeah when they hand that Big Brawl on the field between Canada and Mexico these guys are at that game and after that game they went out and bought those hockey helmets and they came back the next day and wore them concerned that there might be another breakout brawl but you can see they've got the team Canada logo under hockey helmets these are the same guys the other night that wore all of Larry Walker's Major League jerseys and you can see they've been a fan of the been fans of the WBC throughout its history but they're from all over Canada we have met guys they have been from Winnipeg their model either from Quebec DC they all get together and Unite Here and here is the brawl in the WBC back in 2013. that's a warning well that warning didn't do anything as a Mexican pitcher ignited this brawl and it's not your typical baseball fight there's some real punches being thrown there and because of that these guys said you know what we come back tomorrow we need hockey helmets [Laughter] they're game used now as well so they're authenticated very popular as uh telez comes in There's A A Restaurant Row here in downtown Phoenix next to the ballpark as you walk back to the the main hotels in downtown and they've been absolutely packed the last four or five days with fans from every team so there's always a section of blue jay fans and Team Canada fans and buck stops but last night everybody wanted to stop and talk to JP morosi absolutely because there are a lot of fans are fans of this event telez takes in and JP of course is such a great ambassador of this event and an award-winning baseball journalist anyway so all of the pictures we took last night were JP morosi with World Baseball Classic fans from all different countries I kept wanting to say don't you know who I'm walking with this is Rich Waltz and Buck Martinez you want their photo not mine I'm just a reporter but I'll tell you what guys it's a special community and why I love this event so much is exactly what we have seen the last several days it truly unites the baseball world and there's such great appreciation for being together and you just feel that you feel that gratitude and the joy and I tell you what the stories that we have the privilege to tell of the journeys of each player whether it's Great Britain or Mexico or Canada it's just an extraordinary privilege yeah it is and this this is a great spot for this event because you have obviously with Mexico as Albers stops his wind up there obviously with Mexico they're in close proximity they really support it hey fans from Canada want to get out of the cold just like fans from the Northeast fans from the Northwest come down to Phoenix [Music] and as a swing and a miss wow man you know talk about stories about Journeys and Andrew umbers who's in this ball game he has had a terrific Journey slow breaking ball gets to lay his way out on that front foot and he's got no chance Alberts is Now 37 years old drafted out of the University of Kentucky from North Battleford Saskatchewan and I tell you he has been all over the world literally throwing baseballs and he loves to do it and he certainly loves to represent Canada Albers pitching for a third time in a WBC for Team Canada and this is the guy they were hopeful of getting into the middle of the game that could give him three maybe four innings he began his career with the Minnesota Twins and he had a historic start to his career he did not allow a run for 17 in the third innings in his first two starts one of two pitchers to start his major league career with consecutive eight plus shutout Innings the other Tom fevis of the Orioles on that great 66 Baltimore team did you face Tom Phoebus at some point yes really yes he had a curveball and he'd get up on his tippy toes and throw that 12-6 curveball do they call it the Phoebus like the ephus no it was a hard curveball okay it was like a Jim Palmer curve bone ah he was part of that 66 team that featured Jim Palmer Wally bunker and Tom Phoebus and of course they had the Great World Series against the Dodgers to one pitch one pitch to see is there and makes the catch Andrew Albers has picked up where Philippe Oman left off top of the order coming up Julian Abraham Toro Tyler O'Neill Canada Mexico biggest game of pool C this is a playoff game a game seven and Adrian Martinez enters Mexico and Canada winner gets a ticket to Miami and entry into the quarterfinals [Applause] Martinez signed originally as an amateur free agent free agent with the Padres back in 2015 and he was traded to Oakland last April in a deal that sent Sean Manaya the big left-hander to San Diego I like this we got hockey helmets on one side the luchadores masks on the other side it's great music in here Julianne has doubled and struck out and there is a strike well I tell you Canada is right where they want to be they've got the starter out of the game and they're within Striking Distance trailing just by a run top of the order and they're in the fifth inning where Kitty went four gave up the two runs including the home run to Bo Naylor last inning Julian scored after his double Canada had a chance to get more in the first let her Kitty how to strike out a nailer and a ground out from Casey kind of uncharacteristic swings from Julian I mean he's a young player but from what we've seen great plate discipline he chased a pitch out of the Zone when he struck out in the second that was a high change happen it was probably not exactly where Kitty wanted it but it was effective Jillian doubled down the right field line his first time up and that's what they're hopeful here get something going Canada down by a run [Applause] two balls two strikes or Katie martial art Taiwan Walker giving team Mexico a terrific start to this game two and two and Julian fouls it back eduard julienne his numbers are Joey Votto like just two years and we've talked about him anytime you're a minor Leaguer and you go from single a to double a one year after the next and you thrive in double A and it's just your second year in the minors you're doing something you're going places I think Julian thought he was struck out and it looked like that pitch was a strike Julian Barnes and Martinez all thought it was a strike what's the reaction of the hitter he takes it inside thinks it's over the corner and starts to walk back toward the Dugout Barnes is ready to throw the ball around the infield Martinez the pitcher is celebrating everybody but Carlos Torres thought it was strike three High Fly ball are rosarina so here's the bracket to get you up to speed remember the quarterfinals over in Asia are taking place and in fact Cuba defeated Australia and they are into the semifinals the winner here will head to Miami and play in a one-and-done quarterfinal to get into the semifinals and that ticket to Miami will go to either Canada or Mexico whoever wins this game grab every game after the first round becomes a elimination game it's terrific atmosphere obviously from this point forward and this is one with the slightest exception and that is Mexico loses they are done Canada loses they still have a slight hope but a lot of things have to go right for them including Colombia has to upset the United States tonight then they got to get in the pool not pool C but the tiebreaker pool which with Canada's history with tie Breakers it's never gone well that's the fun pool you don't want to get into the tiebreaker pool Toro with a 2-1 and swinging a miss one thing team Mexico has done very effectively is they've thrown a lot of breaking balls down and into these left-handed Canadian hitters they have really scattered them very effectively recognizing that they're pretty good out over the plate but Arcadia did it effectively and now Martinez has found a suit hit hard but caught Paredes or Katie the starter four Innings pitch and he had that good curveball working he had five strikeouts over the four Innings and again there's another pitch down and into a lefty hitter he elevates to get Denzel Clark but that pattern has been consistent throughout this ball game they're going to throw those lefties down and in so breaking balls you can see the strikeouts five of them and you got three of them on that slow curveball now O'Neil who's had a really good classic here in Phoenix [Applause] actually eight for twelve is is better than really good now that I think of it yeah he's he's been exactly what they hoped he would be and he's looking to Rebound in the big leagues as well he had kind of a rough season last year 2021 was a terrific season for him please time go Glover yeah he and he's always been known as just a great outfielder and that 2021 was 34 homers a 560 Slug and 352 on base and the goal Club he played Just 96 games last year hamstring and shoulder issues so you got to be confident he feels real good about his physical status right now because he's committed to Team Canada so you love that and that will play well for the Cardinals as well it's off the plate Barnes tried to snap it back there have been some calls missed that have gone against Mexico and so anytime you have something like this that's close you get that reaction from Benji Gill do the same fastball with a lot of movement it appears to be off the plate and jigil wants to know where is that where was that pitch [Applause] Adrian Martinez is a big league pitcher 12 starts in the big leagues last year 3-2 bounces it up there and O'Neill is on base again I think later on tonight if we have a moment we may draw up our all-pool CT yeah that's a good idea and I think that guy is going to be on it yeah he will he's been on base a ton throughout these four games well out in front but he's had such a great run Joey Meneses Joey Meneses for sure gotta be on that I'll tell you what Chavez young Great Britain Harry Ford Harry Ford he might be the catcher he might two home runs in this series he's gonna be the catcher in Seattle for a long time so at least it feels that way I think I got Cal Raleigh there right now and he had some big hits for the Mariners last tonight [Music] and gets ready for the weekend and the quarterfinal round and went foul back out of play one team has advanced into the semifinals Cuba Cuba was Owen two to start pool play and believe me when I tell you Cuba going to Miami is a seismic thing not just in the World Baseball Classic but in South Florida yeah getting team Cuba there culturally yep and then you're going to believe you know Venezuela they're in the driver's seat there they're already going there are enclaves all across South Florida of many Latin countries [Applause] western Florida has that great Venezuelan population but the Cuban population man I mean the ballpark is a Little Havana Park yeah so that's going to be wild yeah a great atmosphere and it is a great atmosphere but when you get these Latin American teams involved terrific Dominican Republic here Venezuela Puerto Rico great history of baseball and very enthusiastic fans all right runner at first and JP morosi is headed in that direction that should be some scene it's remarkable rich and of course the first time ever that the Cuban national team will play in South Florida in the World Baseball Classic that has never happened before when you consider the context there the moment is there for probably a five-part documentary when you really think about it oh yeah and there's plenty of Cuban ball players who live in South Florida but they've all fled Cuba so there's that too [Music] right now Alan Trejo in Mexico with Arius at first trying to bunt we've seen teams try to bunt here because these games sometimes lend itself to hey scratch how to run I don't know that we've seen anyone do it successfully I don't think we've had a sacrifice burning this pool C I mean Paris chick out of the third base coach if they runner at first Maria's Trejo has struck out both times he's been to the plate today interesting running with two strengths gotta get killed knows how important runs are now you have to make contact you got to this was at Chase Field in Mexico a 9-1 winner there New Hampshire had a great run in 2006 he had a couple big hits against Team USA including a couple of RBIs against Roger Clemens Vinnie Castilla in there as well Ben onishko Seattle Mariner minor leaguer double a last year Maria skips out of the way Odetta got him it did clip him and so he's on his way to first base so nishko our nation is 26 years old from Winnipeg and that ball was behind him actually hit him on the back of his right heel right behind him so he's the one that got things going for Mexico last and he drew a bit of walk in chance for the runner to get in what you can't do is set up and block the plate before you have a baseball well I I seem to remember and I and this is I worked in Seattle for a few years before I win three games they got to win a quarterfinal game obviously the semi and then the final and this rotation that they have that means Buck they get to pick from from this quartet Sandoval Walker and or Kitty her Kitty might be the swing guy that ends up in the bullpen yeah before yeah it's a role that he's held with the Astros in the World Series and in the postseason see the unique situation they are in and Maria's started game one with the fact that he might be able to start the game in Miami he'll have ample rasties at a good pitch count he's very well in game one here and he was perfect through four Innings though wobbled in the fifth of course Walker was outstanding in his start we saw him last night JP said that may be one of the best starts ever in a World Baseball Classic Game for a starting pitcher four Innings eight strikeouts then there walks he was in the zone the entire outing he looks primed and ready got a nice four-year contract with the Phillies after a terrific season pitching for the Mets [Music] that is strike three call Sandoval had the three shutout Innings to open up that big win over USA Mexico won the game 11-5 and it didn't it didn't feel that close [Music] so not only does he have Peggy Gill at his disposal all of these guys but they've all pitched well here and that speaks volumes for how they might use them they might piggyback like is even going to be more important as the pitch count will go up their starters can go deeper into the game they have gotten good starts from Tyrone Walker or Katie was okay today pitched a solid four Innings Ernie wit on the other hand just a little bit shorthand then they lost Freddie Freeman their former MVP and lastly the Dodgers but the young players gained some valuable experience at where Julian had a tremendous tournament same for Otto Lopez he had some great moments but in the end Benji Gill and team Mexico will go to Miami for Mexico today win or you're out they win they're the one seed they are headed to Miami with a lot of momentum for Canada when and you're in they didn't win lose and you're not quite out but a lot of things have to happen as you look at the pool c standings Canada is now two and two here's what has to happen for Canada to survive they need Colombia to upset the United States tonight that's number one then they would fall into a three-team tiebreaker pool and the numbers don't look great for them right now but as Joaquin Andrew Hart you never know because you can't do the math until that last game is played Rodrigo Lopez the former big league pitcher and GM of team of Mexico certainly appears proud about what his team has done but you're right you just don't know about the pool but you never really know what Colombia is going to feature tonight
