US Open Men's Final - Jannik Sinner WINS 2nd slam 🏆 SECURES World No.1 status + Fritz falls short!

Intro / Taylor Swift / Travis Kelce is the final day of the final grand slam of 2024 has now been and gone no super late late finish for us so I'm a little I'm actually a little bit confused at the moment uh with our recording time but uh yeah how are we how are we all feeling underwhelmed I think after the men's final a little deflated you know it's sad it ended this way yes again I feel the parallels were there between the men's and the women's finals so close to going to that extra set but not quite so they kind of just never reach the crescendo we're starting off on on a downer but it does feel like this US Open it didn't really get out of third gear did it h it maybe didn't think they've been better I think a fair summary we did put out a Twitter poll saying what was the best match and some people said I'm not sure I can name one M Muk did get lots of mentions um there are a few mens of the men's sides like Shelton Shelton tone obviously that Dan Evans match so we have had our little moments a little highlights along the way but maybe the finals didn't quite um do it justice yeah yeah I mean arguably the paps where all the eyes were on the final was not on the tennis but on all the celebrities in in attendance cuz Taylor swi was that Taylor Swift was there not just Taylor FRS I've got to got to say as well oh yeah who's shocking outfit was the most shocking for you Joel out of all the celebs in attendance I think it was uh Travis Kelce was it well actually for me think I think it was a Matthew mccon bandana going on um the USA USA B I mean I love the the Patriot patri patriotism obviously with Taylor Fritz playing so I got it it just looked I just sort of saw him as a bit more sve and would be in a suit and oh really he's very Bohemian he also known famously not to wash particularly he's very yeah I think maybe the Celebrity Status and Premier might have thrown you off there but for me I love a comment that you made Joel about Travis Kelsey's outfit because that shows your age maybe but who did you think he looked like yeah he he I I'm not going to lie when I I saw Taylor Swift with her boyfriend Travis Kelce the N NFL player for for anyone who is not in the in the Swifty Universe um he's got he's got a tremendous mustache so instantly when I saw it on TV I was thinking Joel It's myself I was like well I thought that initially but I also thought oh that's nice Taylor Swift with with Stan Smith in the in the Box oh wow I mean I'm not sure it's not netive young make sure you say young we don't offend anyone too much on the podcast but Kim you're giving sort of Taylor Swift Vibes in your outfit sort of the red and white affair hers was checked yours was stri she was I'm in stripe she's in check so but yeah stars and well no stars stri St stries yes exactly hasn't quite worked out for the Americans in the finals this weekend with both of them losing but um Men's Final Reaction + Analysis yes we did have some obviously tennis to talk about as well not just celebrities um let's talk about the tailor on the court because Taylor Fritz in his first final did end up losing in straight set so Yanik sinner has won his second slam of the Season uh so both him and sabalenka winning both the hardcore slams this season uh very much the the kings and queens of of the hardcore slams um but yeah yanx getting the job done 63 64 75 almost could have gone to a fourth set Taylor Fritz was two points away um as soon as C broke back though I was kind of thinking this has 75 written all over it I don't know about either of you guys um but yeah I guess what were your initial thoughts on on the match that was uh because for me it was kind of quite predictable how can we put a positive spin on it I think is probably the the question yeah well Joel you work in marketing advertising so how are you going to put a positive spin on it spinor I'm I'm I'm not sure you know I'm not sure I can because I feel like the whole match I can tag in if you want me to I can try all right okay Chris you take you take the Reigns because I can give it was very enjoyable is what I'll say that was a tug-of war you know like the the parallels with with um the Pula sabalenka match I also do think that there is something nice about the fact that now the prophecy has come true from that Wimbledon poster and the grand slams have now been split between s and alcar so it does feel like we can finally say Obviously there was the Olympics and jovic winning it but on a slam level you know it is a Changing of the Guard so I feel very positive about next year's slams I'm going to say if not maybe positive about the match but now Joel tell us why you don't feel positive about the match well I I just think from Taylor Fritz perspective his his game it deserted him for for a lot of the match and I felt like he was looking to the crowd for for a spark or or some sort of moment that could kick you know could kickart and and get his get himself a foothold in the match and it didn't really come I feel until too late in in that third set where you know he was he was sort of staring at the abyss I think you know there were points for C to go 42 up with a serve and he was able to break and it looked like we were going into a fourth but it just didn't feel like he was able to bring his his aame and um yeah and and he wasn't able to I think bring the crowd into the match with some sort of tennis that um yeah got everyone on their feet and that for me I think was the most disappointing sort of aspect was I don't feel like we've got lights out tennis from Fritz but to be honest from both of them as well I think that's fair yeah Yanik sner first serve percentage 51% if for someone who's winning a grand s fin in straight sets that's not a stat that you would associate and it's from sin's perspective he didn't even have to play his best tennis because yeah Taylor Fritz was was not at the races either and it was kind of who's just going to be the you know all I mean all you can do is beat the other player in front of you on the court but it was does that make it more impressive fastic around does that make it more impressive from yanic s's point of view the fact that he was able to win straight sets with a serve that again was just over 50% first serves in I mean it does make it more impressive that you can win on your bad days there's definitely something in that I think there's a maturity that comes with that knowing and I think we've seen this where have had those comments saying that he didn't play well enough to deserve to win it well actually I think we talked about it and said you don't have to play unbelievable tennis to win a slam you really do just have to find a way to win and it seems like this US Open has been about finding a way to win whether you're savalen whether you're Sinner and whether you're Jack Draper you know you're playing great tennis and then you can come a bit unstuck but you know you find a way and so I think with this looking at the numbers from previous rounds he's had he has had much better first serve percentage CER in the previous round uh had 65% um first serves in and he won 77% and 74% on the first serve and second serve respectively so again that's quite different where the number I think it's 43% um or 48% I think of second Ser points one so I mean Taylor Fritz was having a good go at the second serve he wasn't able to convert convert all of his breakpoint chances I think it was um quite low for the match I think it was uh was it two from seven and so it just felt like a few points a bit of momentum shifts could have changed it slightly but I mean Yanik wasn't playing the whole tournament I'd say he hasn't played the level that we've seen I mean in Australia that was really quite something to win that and some of the tournaments where he's wiped people off the court it felt more like the level he had in the French Open semi-final but in this case it was enough it's funny because there have been grand s finals where both players have played considerably better than both players tonight but it doesn't obviously and then someone's going to lose that those finals and it's just you know it's just the way it is you've got to win ugly sometimes and that's that's also a testament to being a a great Champion is just getting that win regardless of how you or your opponent is playing I mean obviously there have been recent uh question marks and and news about about yanx and this this kind of the doping um Scandal I suppose that that we I know you to have discussed at length previously on the podcast but that is still kind of in the air it's still being talked about apart from the obviously the fact that he wants to rock up a you know rack up another title and get another Sam is it in terms of the the you know the the controversy or ding is this kind of the worst result that could have possibly happened in terms of it that just bringing bringing it to to attention again and everyone kind of talking about it again rather than him kind of just being able to to get on with with tennis without kind of too much attention it's a bit of both isn't it I think when something like that this happens or a scandal happens you do want some positive news that can then flood the internet and then all sort of outlets will get behind that and be like yanx sin Win Second title and there'll be an awful lot of that news that will be out there that will actually now probably overshadow the wave that was kind of going into the final around how should we feel about this so in terms of what the narrative will be I think a lot of it will be and in terms of what Darren kahill said is just how strong Yanik sinner is to get through this in terms of all of the attention I mean we've talked about it I'm not sure that's particularly much pressure for him he's not a listener but I mean there's been a lot of question marks around it throughout the entire year and he still managed to put together the best season of his career and I can't imagine what it would be like to go through that I also do think that that is something that I mean the penalty he had was not particularly great but I think the emotional burden is significant so to get through it and to come out with the slam having been in a situation where it didn't look like that was always going to happen I think you have to give credit where credit is due I mean he's he's really really strong mentally incredibly resilient with all that going on and it not even being sort of public for a while and just having to deal with all that and yeah I think that's just yeah it's even sort of it makes you realize how much he's had to deal with and to get this result you know fair play kudos to him um but Joel do you think that sin's done enough like form wise on the court with this win to prove that he is you know above all that the world number one because he's now you know with alarz and jovic kind of falling early here he's about I think 4,000 points ahead in the in the rankings now he's got quite considerable margin so do you think that's a fair kind of end Point once you know the end of the US Open for him to be so far ahead I I do think now that he can he can be justifiably the world number one in as I say the the tour Arena on the tour but also grand Sams and I don't think that was as kind of certain earlier in the season particularly because we were talking about Yan's body and best of five and whether it it would hold up but I think he's shown over this last couple of of weeks that he has been able to to keep it all together he has been able to produce the best tennis and he has been the person who's able to stick at it until the very end and you look at the Players around him like alarz and jovic they've just not been able to do that and um I think as a result of that I think you do say now that he he has been the world number one I think he's the world number one and he's shown that both in in best of five but also in best of three whereas I think earlier in the season I think there were arguments still to make that ALR and jovic were producing the better tennis in as I say in the longer format yeah and I mean yanx is still only 23 so like by winning the Australian and the US Open in the same year he's only the second youngest player to have done that in the open era uh Jimmy Connor I think was the the youngest in 1974 so I mean he's still got just such a long career ahead of him and you know he's achieved so much already Taylor Fritz also you know quite young still got a long part of his career ahead of him hopefully how do you think he'll be you know reflecting on his tournament and this match in particular Chris well I think he's had a great tournament I think it's been a big result for him to prove that he can you know be considered the top American he had lost that title and we were talking about it I think a lot of us were backing Tommy Paul to be the highest ranked American by the end of the year he was one of the Americans who didn't have that semi-final run I think TFO had been there previously Shelton and Paul so I think that's a really big thing for him in terms of this result unfortunately it does cement the fact he might be in the best of the rest category as opposed to in that top tier I think we are seeing at the slams that there are these players who are better than everyone else and then there are those players who might make a final I think he's probably in that category um especially if he's not going to be able to serve in the way that he needs to yeah having said that though I mean this a question for both of you his game on grass would be very very formidable he's won the eastborn title more than anybody else um he's had some good results at Wimbledon do you think that he could win Wimbledon or do you think that's the slam he's got the next best chance of getting the win at yeah I I think he's got a very good chance on grass particularly I think because grasp I think helps Mass some of his weaker kind of areas particularly I think around movement because I think in this match you know what sner did really well was kind of get into those extended rallies from the base line and he was able to move Fritz quite at ease really at times across the court and it just I think showed as I say with Fritz and his his movement it's not as good as may be as it as it needs to be when you're coming up against someone like a yanx but perhaps on the grass courts of of Wimbledon where you know you can rely on big weapons like a big serve the you know the rallies are generally speaking a bit shorter um movement isn't as big of a an you know as a as an issue but I think here it was it did really count against him in on the hard courts in New York talking of movement his partner Morgan riddle had to reschedule a pilates class today in New York she was supposed to be running one but because Taylor frits reached the final she's had to reschedule it hang on if she had booked uh for for the final that's not a voting confidence in in I know I was wondering that she's got to make that bank Joel she is is influencing and you know you you've got to try and maybe she's like himim and doesn't like to jinx it so she does plan her okay her season around this but she's not silly yeah Joel sorry she was very present wasn't she yes Joel you were saying that she was giving Taylor some coaching advice uh yes I she was like number one cheerleader I was actually thinking she's great you know she's she's energetic she's she's buzzing she's enthusiastic I I would love to see you know if I was on the court looking up at my box and of course I've got my my coaches there uh with their kind of serious faces on but you know to have someone cheering me on I think is and and kind of exuding that kind of positive energy I think is really important and actually it sort of reminded me of of Jack Draper's coach in the semi-final where I sort of felt like he was Cheerleading more than like what was necessary it's almost like you as coach maybe you don't need to do that as much but for Morgan riddle yeah definitely I was thinking she was doing coach though no cuz she was saying stay aggressive Tay and I was like wow I mean I've seen her on Tik Tok playing tennis and I'm not sure she's a tennis player but neither are we she coach is she got coach qualifications she that we don't know about well it was a pilates class that she rescheduled not a tennis lesson so I'm not sure would you rather have a a British actor with a Union Jack bandana in your box maybe Joel instead who would you go for Benedict Cumberbatch something like that he feels quite Royal yeah whoes some sort of person but yeah Morgan riddle she's I mean she's great she just loves to she just gets stuck in doesn't she she loves to get involved she does indeed well Yanik sner is a grand samam champion yet again he's uh a world number one now by country M and where everyone else failed uh he's come out on top so uh fair play to anex and a well done uh he has claimed the US Open for the first time
