"He's got more arm talent than Zach Wilson & Stidham" - Rich Eisen on Bo Nix is Broncos starting QB

here it comes and my eyes see breaking news out of Denver bck is a starting quarterback for the Denver Broncos it's bow time I like it I like it Shawn pton named bonick the starting quarterback on the count of three bow said it wasn't anything that uh anything that Jared or or Zach Wilson didn't do it's just what this kid is doing and listen they drafted him 12th overall how about that so we will have three starting rookie quarterbacks in week number one and B Knicks and he's going to get his start in Seattle how about that for week one bow Knicks in Seattle that's where Denver starts the season and then home for the Steelers and then at the Bucks and at the Jets three of his first four will be on the Road home for the Raiders and Chargers after that that's your Broncos schedule that's what bonick will be doing and it'll be bonick in New Orleans for Shawn pyton and his return to the Saints I like it it's a tough it'll be the guy who you know I guess what he's got the anytime Shan pyton Twitches in the in the direction of a quarterback oh he's got very Drew Brees like qualities so there you go so rookie quarterback Gardner muu and that's half of your AFC West Mahomes and Herbert the other and they hope that Nicks can be that guy we shall see now the Patriots are on the clock is Drake May gonna go because JJ McCarthy as you know is out and Ste is also on the clock not well no I'm talking about rookie quarterbacks Michael penck Junior isn't starting the rest of the preseason he's not playing the rest of the preseason so it's going to be cousins and Kirk told us yesterday it's going to be him he's ready to go right and that's your what do we call it the the Rattler six the Rattler Spencer Rattler was the seventh quarterback seven 18 years from now yeah those six guys were taken and then Spencer Rattler went in the fifth round no quarterbacks between the first dozen picks and the fifth round of the draft in Detroit unbelievable yeah what if I told we'll never see that again right probably not what if I told you six quarterbacks were taken before the Rattler should we call him the Rattler six I I do like that I do think that's pretty funny that's a good fantasy coming up on Roku Sports the r six here's Shawn Payton on the decision want to talk real quick about the quarterback position you guys have been real patient I understand you know and and respect that that that process for you and and for us we've had a process um so look B Knicks is going to be our starting quarterback um I felt like and I said this to you guys two weeks ago you know that room has been outstanding you know stum certainly with his experience and then you know being able to work with Zach Wilson all three of those guys we've got some tough decisions as we get into the roster I I don't want to get into all the other roster battles that's not for today um but Bo will start congrats to him man 61 career starts in College Auburn and Oregon and go figure that he's a week one starter as a rookie in the National Football League for Shawn pton and then Denver Broncos words that I don't think anybody would have said when Bo Knicks was in Auburn right so I don't think it's a disrespect to tell Shawn Peyton the Broncos they realiz it that the still the best team in that division is the Kansas City Chiefs the two of the back-to-back Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs are going for a three Pat this year so that being said you have the chiefs who are at the top and then it's like these three other teams Raiders then you got Broncos Chargers and it's like okay who's who's playing for second like who's going to get to second place I just say that because what's the real life expectations now with Bo Nick starting at quarterback does this put them in a situ ation where they feel like Hey we're getting closer to the Chiefs to be the second best team in this division or is a situation like okay it's still wait and see we've got our guy but we still want to see him improve or develop in that starting spot I think internally they believe that they could be better than they were a year ago Denver went eight eight- n last year and if you remember they started one and five so they they really put themselves in sort of a very untenable situation in terms of trying to chase the playoffs and yet still got themselves into position in early December where they had a chance and I think they believe a couple things one that they're going to be a Nicks is going to be while while he still doesn't have the experience that Russell Wilson did um hasn't learned the league to the degree that Russell Wilson did they believe they're going to be better uh in situational football than they were a year ago big reason why Russell Wilson during his two seasons in Denver took a hundred sacks uh bo Knicks that's one of the his strengths he got sacked only five times at Oregon a season ago uh his senior year in high school didn't get sacked once that's just part of his DNA as a quarterback and and they believe that that will allow them to avoid a lot of the negative situations that kept them from creating offensive momentum and then situationally they were one of the worst teams in the short Red Zone area last year they've shown a lot of proficiency in that so far in training camp and in the preseason and then the on the defensive side of the football the real Achilles Hill was that they could not stop the run last year last in the league gave up five yards per carry they go out they trade for John Franklin Meers from the Jets they sign Malcolm roach uh you know kind of a a specialist run stopper from the New Orleans Saints and and believe that they are a lot more fortified UPF front will allow them to you know stop the run a little more effectively and then can build from there so internally those are the components where they say hey we have some new players we got rid of a lot of veterans you know Russell Wilson Justin Simmons Jerry Judy uh Lloyd cushenberry the center all gone um but but they believe in BO Knicks they believe in this draft class that they just added and and when you put all that together there's a lot of internal optimism that there's no reason we can't be better than were a year ago Shawn Peyton year two now what do we expect from him or how has he been around the building I think a lot of expectations last year he was supposed to change Russ and the Broncos they got the the the head coach that they finally needed no rust there this year so how has training camp been how is this new Shawn pyton in year two yeah you know it's it's another great question I I think people National reporters who have come in who have a relationship with Sean people like my own Diana Rini um K Adams who's known him for a long time who have like cycled through during their training camp tours and spent time with with Shawn pton have remarked that um you know he seems as kind of loose and energized as he has um you know really in a long time and I think part of that is he's really excited to work W with bonix it starts there um this is a guy who has been told all offseason hey you've never worked with a rookie quarterback right well yeah that's a box he hadn't been able to check and I think was really eager to dive into that whole process and the fact that Nicks has been a really sort of um the marriage there in terms of B Nick is a guy who loves the game planning aspect of football he he grew up as the son of a head coach um his his dad of course was a was a quarterback at Auburn um he really relishes that part of it and so there's a real kinship I think between the two of them in that mode and so Shawn pton is really deriving I think a lot of energy from that and then overall they have a younger team than he typically has had over the last few years and that has allowed him to really kind set the culture that he wants to more than he was a year ago it's a lot more of you know quote unquote his guys that are in the building now and I think that's that's been re-energizing and and what that will ultimately mean for for where they go this year remains to be seen but um they definitely the training camp had a different vibe to it this year ago it was it was a lot more um you know it's still he still runs a tough Camp you know they they run gassers after practice they you know they're thuing there there's there's guys playing in the preseason on all those sorts of things but I think the kind of the General Vibe of it was hello [Music] for speech for for for well
