Bryce Young Impresses! Rookies Shine in High-Scoring Win | Panthers vs Bills Preseason Recap

I forgot to do one little thing hey Chris Jenkins credential member of the media C the Carolina Panthers for Charlotte Vive AKA man of the people as I'm here happily bringing you the latest with the Carolina Panthers as they have won their first preseason game under head coach Dave Canales with their starters playing final score in this game today Carolina Panthers 31 Buffalo Bills 26 so that is exciting I'm not going to let you guys if anybody's out there being Debbie Downer about this and going to find reason to not be happy I'm going to going to ask you not to be I think you should be relieved because regardless of what the conditions were for this score today you come off games where we only had one touchdown previous preseason game no touchdowns we ended last season with two scoreless game so let's take a moment I don't care what the conditions were and uh let's see if I can get the the sound effect here for some Applause congratulate these Carolina Panthers Dave Canales on getting their first preseason Victory next up we got a lot of important things that are coming up we got some Cuts see if I have this graphic handy and man these my screen is so hard to see but got it right so we got a few important dates coming up on Tuesday the Carolina Panthers will cut their roster down to 53 they had to do that by 4:00 on Tuesday then they turn right back around the next day and add in on their six te players by noon the next day which will make up their practice squad so I'm sure Dan Morgan and the whole crew is already at work to get get that done he says that he's kind of assigned his Scouts like told him they're you're the GM of these teams know their rosters inside and out they're going to be on that first round waiver pick that they have I'm sorry number one waiver position that they have which I believe is through the first three maybe four weeks not exactly sure but I know it's several weeks that they'll lock in that first waiver wire pick and be excited to leverage that so we got a lot of things that we're going to talk about today going to teaser alert number one we're going to talk about Bryce young that first series that he had and what that looked like we're also going to talk about Trevon Wallace who I felt like had a very outstanding game so we're going to bump through some various things and then we're going to go through some questions and answers so if you're leaving some questions just bear with me here for a minute as I go through getting you up to date with all the latest and then we'll spend depending on what time we get through it all I'll take as much time as I can being the man of the people answering your questions all right lots of action in this game again lots of action that first quarter actually was the slowest quarter of the game when we had our starters out there even though it looked pretty good we had uh it was overall 10 points scored between both of those teams in that first quarter but then the next three quarters they just took it up this was a game that didn't have the best defense but I'm not mad at that I think we all like to see some pretty good offense but first quarter 10 combined points followed by 18 in the second quarter 16 in the third and then 13 in the fourth quarter again the final score in the game Carolina Panthers 31 Buffalo Bills 26 all right we're going to go over some stats and some other cool things from today but let me if I can I think I didn't get this graphic ready in time before the game but I believe that I can quickly get it to you while we talk for a second here I'll give you a hint before the game when we were talking about the inactives we talked about Austin Corbett not being active and I thought that was really weird because he's a key piece of this offense uh give me just a second but I found out there's a very good reason that Austin Corbett was inactive today here you go that reason right there how about that on the game day fortunately it was a preseason game so it wasn't as crucial as a regular season game uh Austin Corvett had a baby today he had a baby boy and I believe I heard in the Press Box he was around no I'm not going to say 10 PBS 10 PBS is a lot I'm not sure I heard correctly so I'm not going to say that but but Austin Corbett was in active today because he stayed back in Charlotte to watch the birth of his son so congratulations to Austin Corbett on that right there so let's go ahead and where where's my notes at where are my notes talking bad English there let's go ahe and go over these stats from today right the stats always give you a pretty good breakdown of the day and let's go ahead and start with our passing all right because we did pretty darn good and you know Jack plumber who I think everybody goes to call Jake at first uh just a habit he had a pretty decent game now I'm going to tell you this I still wanted to see Andy Dalton not that we absolutely needed to see anything out of Andy dalon himself but I just want to see how he would run the offense to give these wide receivers the chance to catch some some good balls but nevertheless Jack Plummer did pretty well looking at his stats 21 of 29 almost a 300 yard game for him no Andy Dalton no Lon as he's been hurt and uh 9.6 yard average best stats of all we had no interceptions today all right so J Jake see I did it myself Jack had two touchdowns no interceptions he was sacked just one time so so they did a good job of of keeping him upright a 125.4 pass rating but who do we care about Bryce Christopher Young that's who we care about that's who we want to see that's who Dave Canales made us wait three weeks to see in my opinion he didn't disappoint he look he looked pretty good so Bryce was six of eight 70 yards and something that I just love to see here an 8.8 yard average not the 2.23 .5 just Dink and Dunk Dunk dink that we saw last year he actually had a chance to move the ball downfield and I was extremely happy to see that from Bryce one TD no interceptions got sacked one time look at that passer rating will you take that 140 I don't know what the perfect passer rating is maybe I think it's around 150 please don't quote me on that I didn't research it before I got online but I'll take that any day from Bryce young and let's talk about what he did during that drive that he out there he's only out there for one series but that series was a decent length in time of a series I think it was about a 9 minute drive that he had and on that drive this is why I think that it was pretty good no matter who you're playing because you could still mess up you could still you know you could still do things that say oh my goodness what is going on we played terrible against their backups no we didn't play terrible we spread the ball around first completion was to Jordan Matthews second completion was to davien Sanders so we go from uh we got both our tight ends that were hidden early on then we go to Jonathan Mingo we're up to three already after Mingo we get Deontay Johnson Adam Thelen five different receivers that he was able to hit on that first drive five different receivers and then he end up hitting uh Matthews for the touchdown basically a seam right kind of thing we uh and the Press Box had an angle where we're almost right behind the The End Zone which gave us a pretty good Viewpoint a few times when the Carolina Panthers were driving down the field and you can see those Lanes opening up you know we're up above so we kind of got a a good bird side view and you know you kind of get excited like oh he's open and Bryce was right on it you know it wasn't like oh he missed this guy uh no Bryce was on it the entire game going to see if I have some other notes here about that drive in particular One play that I want to point out was on that fourth down Bryce was rolling to his left he's a right-handed quarterback so anytime you're rolling to your left and you got to throw the ball it's it's pretty good twist and action that you got to do there and it was a guy that was open and I want to try to point this P paint this picture as he was about two levels down he had a guy that was intermediate that was kind of open but you can see the guy that was behind him that was even more open and you're running to your left and you got that Precision type uh ball that you got to throw like let's see and it was a dart it it was right on had enough air on it had enough uh speed on it caught it fourth down conversion they kept marching the ball down the field so it was things like that that I saw from Bryce today that was really good really prom he moved around well he he did get sacked but he also distributed the ball well right on point he was let's see I forgot the exact number I only wrote down the percentage but I believe that he passed actually I can I can do this right here I can help answer my question so he passed the ball eight times so eight out of 12 plays during that series were pass plays and you might say well didn't coach canala say we're going to have a big emphasis on the Run big emphasis on the run and yeah he's going to have a big emphasis on the Run but here's what happened tonight was a tonight today was a preseason game and you're really trying to look at very particular things so tonight isn't what you know don't start thinking that there's an identity that you saw tonight from the plays because tonight they were trying to isolate certain things and get certain looks and focus on those and I'm sure that he just wanted to see Bryce young respond and that's why we had more passes again we had eight pass attempts out of 12 plays that we had tonight go ahead have fun in the comments about me drinking my water I got to stay hydrated it helps to have a long show when you stay hydrated so that's what we're doing here let's move on to some other stats again if your questions are coming don't freak out I'm going to get to them I want to go through my recap some other details that I want to share with you and then we'll go into your question and answer that's that's how I got to be man the three carries for 15 yards miles Sanders three for six Jack plumber he wasn't running for his life thankfully but he had three carries as well negative yardage but you know I'll take those over the sack and by the way one of those sacks that Bryce took in the game which you guys can't see me let me hit this button here one of those sacks that Bryce young took in the game I'm like hey Bryce maybe you did put on a few pounds or something this offseason but can you kind of slide a little bit you know you're out there running like it's you know fourth quarter playoffs on the line and you're trying to get that get those yarded so you know let's let's slide a little bit but again we'll come back and talk about that more tomorrow you can expect our day after show we'll go into some more details and answer some more questions about this match up from today moving along here passing we already did the passing rushing we already did the rushing let's go to receiving look at that list of receivers that is a lot we spread the ball around tremendously well today I don't know if that was by design by play call I don't know what you know I'll have to take some time look into it but nevertheless we got that ball around jper horstead was our leading receiver let's see if he's on the pronunciation chart he is not maybe I need to go back to English class where they teach you how to sound out things but Jesper was the leading receiver two of 63 Jaylen Coker three for 55 Terrace Marshall three of five did he have a drop I forget who he had a drop did terce have a drop yes so terce did have a drop and one of those misses there that he had two of but there you can just see everything that happened here really good job of spreading the ball around and this is not even the full list this is just all that I could fit on the screen here which is 1 2 3 4 five 6 7 8 9 10 11 11 different receivers catching the Rock today so really really good ball distribution by mostly Jack plumber and let's go for our last one here let's talk about this defense Rudy Ford LED with tackles Jamie Robinson who's not a rookie but is coming along had five tackles and this is the guy here Trevon Wallace five tackles four of them were solos and um I'm just going to say this in my opinion Trevon Wallace balled out quite well I mean he was I got some notes Here let me see if I can quickly find it I know it was one Series where Trevon it was like the Trevon Wallace show let me quickly find My Notes here so I can let's see give me a second give me a second all right so it was in the second quarter that Trevon wall is like went in beast mode and I'm trying to see what my notes was so here it is on the drive there was six plays by the Buffalo Bills in the second quarter six plays by the Buffalo Bills four the tackles were completed by rookie Trevon Wallace four out of six should have been more because actually on the scoring touchdown play on that drive Trevon caught the guy just couldn't couldn't hold on and you know I'm not mad at that because I feel like he had been running around the field so much where you make four of six tackles on a drive you're doing some running around and all his tackles went like up the- middle stuff they were middle of the field sideline left of the field sideline right of the field uh covering guys out coming down the field making tackles so that last play where he couldn't wrap up on the tackle I'm not mad at it and then unofficially not part of that six-play drive was the two-point conversion that the Buffalo Bills went for Guess Who tipped the ball Trevin Wallace I mean so hats off to Trevon on his performance tonight if you haven't seen I want to encourage you to check out my one-on-one video with with Trevon that was about a week ago and we talked about his speed of Play Because earlier on in training camp Canales had said that he wants to see Trevon move quicker react quicker just could tell that he was you know he wanted him to trust his instincts about what was going on so I asked Trevon about it and he said you know I do go a little bit side to side first even though I I feel like I see what's going on and then I attack because you know he said quite honestly I'm still a rookie I don't want to let have these vets getting on me it's important I got this opportunity I want to let people down so it's safer for now if I just sidestep and then go obviously he's gaining some confidence and he's now attacking a lot quicker and you know had an outstanding second quarter had an outstanding game had an outstanding training camp so looking pretty good there in that regard so let's go ahead cuz I got a feeling there's been a lot of comments coming I hadn't been able to look at them all again if you interceptions one sack that was barely a sack we'll give you a little bit more Bryce young here look how he's keeping his eyes downfield guys got got his foot we won't talk about who uh let their guy by I won't say let their guy by allowed their guy to get by but there's ianu but Bryce young scrambling keeping his eyes downfield making a connection I'm pretty sure and this is what we got here we got a good time that we have here in Buffalo Mike Boone this is the second touchdown of the game having a little dance there little celebration again great photographs by our photographer Patrick Snider you don't get this anywhere on the internet this close to after game these are our photos not ones that we've taken so got to give us props to our photographer here's terce Marshall Jr uh being heavily contested on the ball that he did not catch but a great action photograph Jaden Sheran bringing it in I'm sure that's from Jack actually I'm not not sure who this is from but I yeah I want to say this is from Jack plumber that's out there again we had we spread the ball around to over a dozen receivers today great game the man my my uh my MVP I don't know if I'm just uh jaded a little bit or biased but guys third round pick excellent pickup you know we haven't been able to see much from Jonathan Brooks as he has been injured and then we have not been able to see much from Xavier Le get I don't know if that's in your comments I'm not worried about that at all uh but Trevin definitely doing pretty good out here somebody just turned the rotisserie level on the Sun for us so we can fry out here because it has just gotten extremely hot Jaylen Coker with his I believe that's after his touchdown with Jaylen Coker there terce Marshall Jr so again the Carolina Panthers have to cut their roster down to 53 on Tuesday and will this guy be on the team or will he not uh for me it would be a surprise if he's not he's had a solid training camp caught the ball today well now he did have that one drop but this was a great uh run after the catch here is I believe he avoided two tackles and made the touchdown and notied there was no flag on the play for any kind of crazy celebrations afterwards we got our guy David Moore here with the reception how you guys like those Blues Blue and whites we're going to see a lot of white and blues but today we got we got the blue tops today and this was the Bryce young aftermath of that first drive which our starters played connected on a touchdown with a with a seam route to Jordan Matthews who was wide open and again Bryce very good Vision immediately saw it put him on put it on him and got the touchdown all right so that's going to take us through all of our photographs from today and we also I just wanted to touch on this few more things we're going to touch on then I'm going to open it up for question and answer I'm waiting for somebody to make that cloud cover come over here but nevertheless uh fourth downs we we went work several times today two of four on Fourth Downs my theory and I haven't had a chance to hear coach canala press conference uh just to give you perspective game day when we travel it's just two of us uh Patrick Snider's our photographer and I'm the uh on air person but also have to get the equipment so for me to come down and do the show one hour after the game is a lot of haul in it to get down here so I can't go into everything on a game day that's a away game but nevertheless two or four on those fourth down attempts I feel like that was because we're in preseason we're trying to evaluate things we're trying to see how they respond trying to get in plays trying to test this out and test that out so I feel like that's a good reason why we did it but I'm am anxious to see what uh canalysis philosophy will be on that as we get into the regular season I don't have exact injury updates but we did have some injuries that took place during the game and someone in the Press Box said this and I had a good laugh that I want to share with you guys whenever you're in Buffalo you need to bring two kickers right and I said oh yeah remember I forget how many years ago and which kicker it was I want to say was it Zay Gonzalez maybe that was here warming up pre-season many years ago and then warms up warm warmups he hurts himself and then what then proceeds is a very entertaining lot to Clips on social media of various Carolina Panther players trying to kick the ball off to see who could do it uh and of course we then got a different guy and got some more backups in place but we were faced with that today Eddie Pino injured his right hamstring in was questionable he did not return in this game so maybe mevas stay local to Charlotte they said and sometimes they do tell guys hey we we're cutting you like that's going to happen on on over the weekend and on Monday guys's going to be cutting they're going to say hey we don't know for sure but you might just want to stay in town tonight because we're going to try to bring you back on our practice squad so maybe meas is still in town and uh may come back on the roster a lot of speculation there uh Amir Smith maret he went out with an ankle injury his return was questionable he did not return as I wouldn't expect any of these guys to return in the final preseason game from an injury if they have to come out because you got to worry about the bigger pitcher New Orleans in a couple of weeks and then outside linebacker cam Gil he left questionable with an ankle so last thing we're going to touch on what do you guys think about that new kickoff rule do you like it I'm gonna ask Patrick who's off camera do you like that the new kickoff rule he's he's over there looking like he's a model by the way got a good can I take a picture of you I'm just giving a good time hard time but um yeah it was interesting I do like it because you kind of got used to if you're home watching TV you might do this but in the Press Box that's like extra time to go and get your hot dog get a drink get something adjusted because you know they're going to kick it out the end zone it's going to be a TV timeout and then you come back to your TV or to your desk and watch the game well now you you got to stay there because it's interesting things that could happen both the Carolina Panthers and the Buffalo Bills Had An Occurrence where they didn't reach the target zone so you have to kick it within the target zone or Beyond it right if you kick it too short or goes out of bounds the ball then comes back to the 40 so that happened today for both teams I think Buffalo kicked it short um and I'm not sure exactly what happened when the Panthers had their violation where the ball came out to the to the 40 I don't know if they were too short if it went out of bounds it' be the same thing uh but we also got the chance to see a great return today in that and I feel like I I feel like there's some good potential on popping one out because in the preseason uh preseason show I talked about I feel like because the defense and everybody else is standing still and that offensive guy has some speed going already that you could come up with some kind of play where any change of Direction a guy's already got some speed and you you pop it to the other direction you got guys that are going to be flat for to have a chance for a big return but nevertheless I like the new kickoff it's working for me it's interesting something else to watch right so it's all about entertainment I think it's good entertainment value in that all right so we got about 20 minutes or so unless it gets too hot that we're going to take some question and answers so let me try to get my screen where I can see and we'll take some of your questions remember our members get a little little preference there so let's see here let's see we got all right we got a few comments that are coming up here we got to start with our so we'll give a thinking that I felt good about uh the ability to win today just because the bills have not been having a good preseason not because I felt like we were going to do great but they gave up I think 33 points to Pittsburgh gave up just nine to uh Chicago and then here we are today they weren't playing their starters they gave up 31 I believe I lost my notes to us today for the Panthers but I forgot to touch on that so our starting defense was pretty much out there you had Derek Brown out there had sha Thompson Josie Jewel you didn't have guys like JC horn you didn't have ja DAV and Clowney but would say it was a little disappointing for that first drive that U I believe it was a field goal that it resulted in let me let me get this in front of me I don't have to guess I got some information at my fingertips to verify bear with me here on that drive so yeah they got a field goal they got a field goal so when our first team defense was out there they then allowed the bills to go on a 16 play drive for what looks like I can't tell if this 61 or 81 again I apologize there's some serious glare going on here and it was a just over a s minute drive so that was indeed a little disappointing considering how well I've seen this defense Play Day in Day Out would I overreact and say oh my gosh no I I would say it was surprising for today am I word concern absolutely not U but it w it was something that kind of makes oh man you know perfectionist we we want these teams and players to be right but they're not they're humans appreciate the question let's see what else we got here seen a report that TMJ is on the trading block did you see aort report or did you see speculation what was that report you know um I haven't heard anything about terorist Marshall Jr being on the trading block uh I could talk about that tomorrow maybe but there wasn't anything that's been out there saying hey we got calls teams are calling they or Dan Morgan's looking the trade you didn't see that uh I think you saw something more just a speculation about that but appreciate you tuning in and asking the question leis what time we got here we got time for some some more questions so we'll I'm going to take in a second let's see and then the Mad chatter talking about Bryce young throw motion and sance entirely new quarterback look so I know there's some people out there that are really really analytical about Bryce's Thorn motion and every part of it I'm not a quarterback Whisperer that can break that down I don't look at that closely I just look at the overall effort and results and I like what I see but Matt chatter saying that he sees a lot of uh improvements in the mechanics of his throwing all right let's keep on working through some of these questions here so I'm getting some roster questions which I'm not prepared to answer at this point can't be the man of people not give you what you want so I promise that I will do I'll talk more about that in the upcoming video I was going to say exactly what I was going to do but I don't know yet because I got to I got to logistically figure it all out here but I will I will certainly be of service giving you all some of my ideas on those things a lot of people want to talk about wide receivers today so Shockwave says will any wide receiver players get traded for defensive help I don't feel like we're that deep you know we'd have to be deep in order to have a wide receiver that we want to trade away I feel like this team made a very big concerted effort to get Bryce some tools I I don't feel like they want to say oh we only need two tools I feel like they're going to want to have as many options as possible including in that tight end room as possible for Bryson also considering that it's a long season it's 17 games instead of 16 games we fly over to Germany for a game uh coach knows that people just typically you don't have your whole team throughout the entire season without people getting hurt so they're going to want to hold on to their wide receivers the only way that I would see us trading like an obvious potential trade for wide receiver for the defense Improvement will be if we had a disg gral guy like Terrace Marshall was before but Terrace Marshall would have to be doing really good and he's doing good now but I'm sure a lot of teams are also knowing that hey it's just training camp if the guy does it in some regular season games then give me a call back but right now I'm not going to let some guy stock um if I'm another GM or Scout not going to let a guy's stock just go up dramatically from having a solid good preseason hadn't been outstanding it's just been an improvement for Terrace Marshall which is great you know you want to see the guy improve year after year or as coaches will say just be 1% better today than you were yesterday so you continue to prove and be the best version of yourself but it's not been anything that would give us hey we got some trade bait out there for some other people to take advantage of that sun has gone down and I'm feeling great camera's looking good I hope you enjoying the broadcast all right look at this we got a member with another question here Shannon Tyler appreciate you being a member what you think was going on with liette today so I believe he only had one Target and no catches let me just go ahead and do the proper thing and make sure of my stats here before I talk about them yes Xavier Legette liette I'm sorry zero catches one target basically no stats for today what I feel is going on with Xavier I feel like it's just a typical rookie that is entering the NFL figuring things out and let's not forget that Xavier has had not one setback but he's had a couple of setbacks that have cost him time and Reps with this system right I know he got was it OTAs I don't think he participated in any OTAs or maybe it was case where he participated in just like one or two and then he had that an injury and they set him out for the rest of OTAs and he's had a foot injury doing training camp and he's missed some significant time there last week was his first week back yeah when when we were with the Jets so I don't think there's oh what's going on what happened to Xavier I think we all like Exavier his personality is really cool his act the way he talks you know is really cool and you want you get excited about him but I don't think anything's wrong I think it's just going to be a matter of giving that guy some time to make that transition from the from the college level to the pro level and that just great so I didn't see any of that I'm going to talk off camera to my photographer did you see any bad body language from Xavier liette during the off on the sidelines or anything so yeah not saying it didn't happen uh it's it's a big feel a lot to look at I didn't see it uh I have to go back and look at the broadcast and see it but even I don't know what the body language was but um you know if if he if he was down I would think you'd kind of be happy about that right you know if he was smiling and acting like nothing happened you may be concerned about that and sometimes we could just be over analytical about every little thing that happens to try to figure things out but my advice my opinion don't worry about it I'm sure he's not happy that he had zero catches today uh even though he's a first round pick and feels comfortable about making the team these guys didn't get here just to make the team and just to go out there and run around they want to make be an impact and contribute to
