Spencer Rattler Struggles, Taysom Hill Shines In New Role

[Music] the Saints didn't get a lot out of their backup quarterbacks in Spencer Rattler and Jay Kaner in tonight's preseason game but what we did see was an identity on offense and that might be their wasn't a whole lot of good from the secondary guys uh Spencer Rattler I thought struggled Jake Hanner struggled a lot uh I would say the the backup offensive line wasn't very productive uh defensively nothing terrible Josh dobs ran all over the place but that was kind of expected but defensively they were fine even the backups I think there were some good to take out of it but let's start off with the main thing for me um and what I think is going to to potentially be the Saints calling card for their offense this season the Run game if you're going to take any good out of today's game and look forward to the regular season not just talk about the preseason but look at the regular season I think you have to look at the way this ground attack worked particularly on their 16 playay 95 yard drive to score a touchdown it was capped off with that rushing touchdown from Tamm Hill at on fourth down just a really nice drive from the Saints there was a clear mindset there running the football hard putting yourself in short yarded situations and not having the pressure on Derek Carr for the most part outside of one4 down throw uh if you look at the key highlights from that drive and I and I brought it up you had a 15 yard run from Jamal Williams you had an 11 yard run from Tamm Hill 19 yard catch from aave bub memes catching a fourth down completion from Derek Carr to keep the chains moving and then Tamm Hill with the touchdown like I mentioned and when that drive happened and it capped off with the tesm hill touchdown I tweeted out um JM Hill is just dominating fullback this year let him do it because as I like to call him the guy is a beast and this tweet that I put out there in the game is presented by uh standard mortgage and it's something that I think for the Saints can really really be a weapon and asset for them this year we know how good Tamm Hill can be this year we know how good TM Hill has been in the past whether it's QB power whether it's getting him out there as a receiver but I think this role where you have him lined up in the back field you might use him as a running back you might have him out there as the lead blocker as a fullback which he did today to open up a big running Lane for Jamal Williams I think that might be your X Factor because last week guys I know we were excited about Spencer Rattler with the way he played and the game-winning drive and rightfully so those are reasons to be excited but one thing I came away with from the offense which didn't show a lot of tesm Hill was they don't have enough Playmakers yes they have Ave yes they have chimra and when Shahed comes back that's great you have three guys you need someone else to step up if you're going to use taes as a running back SL fullback just overall hybrid out of the back field I think that can pay major dividends for this team and clearly Clint kubak wants to do that and I think that was the one drive where kubak finally said enough of this vanilla [ __ ] let's kind of set the tone hard runs great R uh run scheme which by the way I was all over Trevor Penning playing like crap last week at least run blocking I thought he was excellent today I have to rewatch it and see if the the rewatch is going to hold firm on that belief but I thought Trevor Penning did a good job run blocking I thought the whole o line as a whole just really really opened up great Lanes whether it was for Jamal Williams whether for tames Jordan Mims James Robinson that to me is what stood out from this game and I know there's negatives we have to get to and I will get to that at some point but offensively that is the key for the Saints this year because I don't expect Derek Carr to magically light it up this year I don't expect a receiver room that outside and Shahed doesn't have a lot of proven talent to just be great this year could they be adequate sure but great no I I just I I don't see them being great I see them being okay at best so you're gonna need the Run game to be great and then build everything off that play action pass short yardage situations for Carr where he doesn't have to throw the ball down the field as much and then you can work things and kind of methodically move the chain so shout out to clink kubak with the way he just came out with the plan went full on head of steam with running the football and I'm going to bring up a comment here that I think is interesting and I'm going to get to everyone's comment so if you have any thoughts uh predictions concerns about the preseason just overall statements you want to get out there put them in the chat and I will get every single comment up on the screen before we are done with today's live stream I want to bring this up from Fred though because it is an interesting comment is Kendra Miller in Jeopardy of getting cut Mims looks serviceable I'm going to keep it up there um kendre is in a weird spot I think the one thing that could help him is if he's hurt right now do you put him on IR because you have Alvin you got Jamal mimo is looking better and even James Robinson who by the way had some nice you know moments with the Jaguars before injuries caught up to him he even looked sharp today he finished today's game with a decent stat line of five carries for 27 yards so I think do you just put Kendra Miller on IR see if he can get healthy see if you know behind the scenes he could start to look sharp at all and then go from there because if not then yeah I would say there is maybe that Jeopardy of of maybe thinking about cutting him because he you know availability is so key availability is so key and he doesn't have that availability right now like other guys so I I I'm not gonna say he's in Jeopardy of getting cut yet but man it's it's not looking great when guys like Mims show some great cuts down the field and Robinson makes some big plays that's not what you want from him because you know Alvin and Jamal are going to make the roster it's about who rounds out the rest so that for me was interesting now before I get into Spencer Rattler and Jake Kaner because I I just didn't like what I saw from either quarterback I want to talk about this defense I know the Saints defense were not going up that that defense was not going up against the full you know array of Niner weapons no Debo no iuk no KD no cm see no Jawan Jennings no Trent Williams so I get that um now Brock did play played two drives or three drives whatever it was I believe it was three he had no time Chase young was making plays Brian Bree was making plays Carl Granderson got in there a couple of times elante Taylor out of the gate looked great and look I know it's preseason and I know it's just two preseason games but let's say one thing that Dennis Allen does well coaching defense and I don't think the Saints have a great roster overall but I do think they have a really talented defense and the way Chase young looks right now from just just the explosiveness that he's getting out of his stance the ability to just blow up plays whether it was in the run or the pass that is something we cannot ignore because it's happening in practice and it's happening in preseason games it's not just happening in practice he's doing it in the preseason and I think that's going to carry over the regular season and that package that they have put together where it's Chase Young Brian Bree Cam Jordan and Carl gron that is just something where in passing situations you're the opposing team you got to be scared about that because they that NASCAR package can be a nightmare for opposing offenses so when I see this unit you know the secondary is talented when they're healthy and they got to get healthy adbo didn't play because of injury Latimore hasn't played because of injury and koola McKenry got hurt today so the DBS are getting banged up but let's say the DBS are relatively healthy you know what you have in that in that defense offensive line right now with the way they're playing and Chase young looks great and you know that the linebacker is going to be good as long as de Mario's Manning the middle of the defense can this be a top five unit can this be a top five unit for me personally I know a lot of it rise on health but that's for every team in the league this could be because when Chase young looks the way he does right now this summer and he's looked fantastic and I think Brian B is gonna be an emerging star you got two menaces from a talent perspective you got Carl Granderson who from a motor standpoint just does not give up on place he's he's outstanding in that regard you still got a serviceable vet in Cam Jordan you know you got linebacker depth to Mario Pete Werner Willie gay I mean if we look at the depth of this linebacker group Hudson made some plays today orgie made some plays today you know uh DeMarco Jackson made some plays today they're gonna have tough cuts to make at linebacker and we know they're stacked at cornerback which is another position by the way that they might have to make some tough Cuts because guys like Rico Peyton are balling the hell out safy the one weak spot so I think for this Saints defense I know it's early I know it's just the preseason but man oh man does this feel like a unit that can be scary good it could have been even better if Justin Simmons picked the Saints as opposed to the Falcons obviously we can't change that but I think this Saints defense has the makings of a unit that is just going to terrorize opposing def uh opposing offenses and just think of the quarterback play in the NFC South you got Bryce young who is still just a second-year guy that's trying to learn if he's going to be the guy or not and he hasn't shown it yet Baker Mayfield who's not the most mobile quarterback in the world and Kirt cousins who's not the most mobile quarterback in the world I think the Saints defense from just a divisional standpoint can beat the living [ __ ] out of the quarterbacks in the NFC South and if you do that you have a really good chance of making some noise and again that doesn't mean the Saints are gonna be contenders I I would never go that far I do not see the Saints being contenders but if they are going to be competitive in their division this defense has to be great and I I think this defense can be great and they just keep showing it especially that first team defense they are not letting offenses move the ball at all so got to give them their props I thought they were outstanding now I said it before wasn't all good today there were some bad and the bad I think was the backup quarterback so let's go through let's start off with the main one Spencer Rattler was qb2 today and man it didn't start great fumble on the first drive steps up in the pocket gets hit he had two hands on the football it was kind of you know crazy that he ended up fumbling but obviously not what you want ball security is Paramount in this league I did not see it there on that play which is unfortunate what's really unfortunate though is the second Drive two-minute drill so a really nice situation for Spencer to move the ball down the field and get some points up on the board and not only do the Saints fail to get points up on the board the way they failed was truly hurtful they get to Midfield and Lemieux has one of the worst snaps you will see in an NFL game like I'm not trying to be an ass that was one of the worst snaps you've ever seen not only did it just roll across the floor when Spencer's in the shotgun that thing rolled around the floor and went straight to the left and to make matters worse when Spencer Rattler's trying to recover that fumble this man almost blows out his knee with the way he gets hit so that was a disaster that could have been an absolute nightmare for the Saints so first drives a fumble for Spencer Rattler second drives a bad snap that ruins the drive so he takes two sacks on the evening he only goes four for eight with 27 yards passing thought he bailed on a lot of pockets because of the pressure and made a couple risky throws across his body but you know so did Jay Kaner and all I would say about Spencer is today's a really good reminder of why when he plays well in the preseason you get excited about it but you also understand why he should not play this year and if he does play this year then the Saints are probably going to be in a tough spot they might be in a tough spot even if you know everyone's healthy this year just because their roster isn't overly Talent you know just have an abundance of talent but you got to take the good with the bad and today was a lot of bad uh I didn't see a lot today where I thought man this kid's never going to figure it out and you can't make those assumptions just like last week when everyone wanted to crown him to starter you can't do that you just gotta kind of stay levelheaded be excited when he makes big plays today he didn't make any and understand that it's a process he's a fifth round pick for a reason he's a rookie for a reason Above All Else he's a rookie for a reason and the way he's gonna succeed if he's gonna have success in the NFL is he's gonna need to sit this whole season and if he does that then he might have a shot but he's going to have to sit this whole year to give himself time to learn give himself time to grow and then you can go from there but today was not Spencer Rattler's day in the slightest I thought he looked like he was bailing Pockets early because he took hits early and that was something I said last week when you have a Young quarterback behind a battle line the last thing you want them to do is be out there because you can kind of rack up Scar Tissue really get your confidence shot you don't want to do that and I felt like Spencer after the first two drives took a lot of hits and decid you know what I'm not staying in this pocket for too long and I'll have to go back and look but maybe there were some decent Pockets that he bailed on because your internal clock speeds up when you get absolutely hit early on so um not a good day for Spencer the only good thing for Rattler though was Jay Kaner was just as bad I thought Jay Kaner had a near pick had a near fumble which Manny got lucky on because that was a fumble that could have got returned the other way if it wasn't an incomplete pass and I didn't think Jake did enough even the fourth down throw to at Perry you didn't really give him a chance to make a play on the ball wasn't a great throw so I thought Jake and Spencer both struggled which is unfortunate because I thought Jake and Spencer both played well last week and they played well enough where I got excited about the backup quarterbacks uh battle and I'm still somewhat excited because these are two unknowns these are two quarterbacks that had success at the Collegiate level but they both did not look ready to win a backup quarterback battle on the other side of things Josh dobs that's a guy who looked ready to solidify his spot on the depth chart as qb2 Rattler couldn't do it today when he had a great opportunity and then when Rattler fails and Hanner comes in that is an even better opportunity than Rattler had because you know what the guy in front of you just did or failed to do and Jake couldn't capitalize so uh very unfortunate that that's the way this thing played out but luckily for Jake luckily for Spencer they got time to figure it out they they got time to figure it out but man this was not what you wanted to see from them but overall if I had to sum this up before I get into your comments guys I would say loved what I saw from the ground game loved what I saw from the TM Hill roll I thought Jamal Williams had a good day today after you know go figure I said he showed no burst which he still doesn't have much burst and he plays really well probably the best we've seen from him so far I thought elante Taylor and looked really good I thought Chase young looked really good the defense as a whole looks Stout Kool-Aid going down is not ideal but we'll see what's going on with him uh and as for Derek Carr I thought he was late on throws early got a little bit better as the game went along but I'm still waiting to see because we hear so much about Derek car play grade in practice and then we don't see it in the games I I thought he was late on throws got a little bit better as that went around but yeah overall I'd say first team offense first team defense I'd go thumbs up I i' I'd say thumbs up for the for what we saw out of them uh o line for the first team didn't look that horrendous which is great uh run scheme wise they were outstanding and then defense like I mentioned before I think this can be an excellent unit for the Saints excellent uh if they could stay healthy so we'll see what goes down there and then running back depth I thought running back depth for this team I I think it was on display today and that's actually bad news for Kendra Miller but it's good news for us Saints fans to see some depth so I'm gonna get into every comment that you guys had out there tough to say which quarterback looked the best tonight car isn't exactly pulling away from the other two um look man look car didn't play great but he's still clearly their best quarterback right now I don't think that's Up For Debate and it just comes down to the other two guys are young the other two guys are under sized the other two guys aren't ready to play and uh this doesn't mean that Hanner will never be ready to start or Rattler will never be ready to start but right now Carr looks like a starting quarterback maybe not the high-end ones that's for sure but he looks like a starting quarterback the other two guys look like young guys trying to figure it out which is okay like that's totally okay with me Ryan says we started out good but then San Francisco figured us out we would have won if this was a regular season game uh if I mean it's hard to say that because if it was a regular season game the ners would have played Debo and KD and Trent Williams and CMC and all that so uh it's hard to say that point at the started out good I think the defense started out excellent defense still played well I mean 16 points and 16 points that's not bad all of it was pretty much field goals and then Josh dobs is rushing touchdown that's a Miss tackle from Jordan Howen who I think is really blowing a golden opportunity here to start he has not shown enough if anything he's shown a lot of regression instead of him progressing which is is really un you know unfortunate for us Saints fans but yeah defense started off strong offense didn't start off strong and then got it going like I said that 16 play 9 5 yard drive that is what you have to take away from this game if you're going to take anything away and feel confident about what this team can maybe do in the regular season it's going back to the drive seeing that they set the tone running the football with you know a clear plan making that their identity I like that Rachel says car playing two quarters uh is crazy it's preseason you know I'm actually GNA go on the flip side of it I think Derek Carr playing almost two quarters is good um because for the saints that offense looked putrid last week and to go out there and make sure Derek Carr and this first team offense plays and gets a little bit of confidence and knows that man we could move the chains I think that's important I don't know I don't think you play them next week I think you let Hanner and Rattler play that game out but just have a little bit of confidence going into week one because you have to we win week one you have to win week one because after that you play the Cowboys and the Eagles and you get ready for a Monday night game against the Chiefs it gets tough quickly for the Saints so I I would say that to go out there and make sure they build confidence I know some people might see it as a sign of like oh it's pathetic that to be out there I say you know what don't don't coddle them make them go out there work hard and earn their confidence earn that confidence and and and you know what they did it on that one drive like I said that's a 95 yard Drive is there's nothing easy about that regular season or preseason you know so for them to do that thought that was great Luke says oine looked better tonight specifically left guard I don't remember who they put in there um but he was better than Udo Udo H did look way better at right tackle than left guard oine as a whole yeah I just thought it looked a lot better tonight uh did not have as many fuckups when it comes to the first team offense now second you know second and third string o line uh not ideal Rattler got leveled sometimes Hanner was running it's just not what you want to see but they're backups for a reason and we know this team doesn't have great depth especially on the old line they don't have great depth as a whole on offense but the old line is there's no depth there Margaret says hner is better than Rattler though I think Jake maybe has a slight Edge over Rattler I I don't think either one really did enough today uh for me to come to that and I'm gonna be honest I thought Jake had a great opportunity today if if Jake played well you can argue that he kind of slams the door shut on Spencer but I I didn't think he did enough I would say they're kind of at a deadlock you know standstill here because they both look good last week they both have battled in practice Jake's probably been a little bit more consistent but I haven't seen enough yet I haven't seen a wow moment from you know the moment where you know that the other guys pulled ahead how about that that's what I would say Jake looks better than both QBs I personally I don't see that margar says they ran the ball better absolutely APM says car at uh car's ass he needs reps that's why he's out there I mean I think the whole first team offense needed reps but yeah I mean I obviously Derek Carr did not look good last week and he did not look good to start today's game and I thought he played a little bit better uh on that long drive that I mentioned the scoring Drive whether was a throw Tove that was a strong throw the fourth down throw to BB memes made some good plays on that one Paul says the Saints offense will struggle this year the offensive line is terrible look I I think the old Line's going to be bad but remember guys the old line that we saw get decimated today is not the old line that's going to play this year like that that was the backup offensive lineman that really got exposed today I thought the starters were okay Fred says not trying to pump too much Sunshine but I was encouraged with the starters on both sides as a bonus Penning seem to learn how to stay on two feet which is Improvement it's crazy man you know Fred Penning when he's run blocking you can see legitimate confidence in the way he plays it's when he's in pass protection there isn't nearly as much confidence and then you start to question your technique your footwork Etc but yeah I thought I thought he played a lot better and I thought the Saints on both sides of the ball for the starters I'm pleased with that performance I'm definitely pleased with the defense what they've shown the entire preseason but offense to to close out strong I was definitely happy about that John says hope you're doing all right Chris I'm doing well John hope you're doing all right as well uh thank you for uh for that kind message Josh doobs turns to Mike Vic when he plays us thoughts on bub memes' first outing uh Josh jobs definitely turns into Mike Vic when he plays Dennis Al's defense I don't know why he was running all over the field I was so glad they benched him after you know halftime because man was running all over the field as for the second part uh thoughts on bub memes I thought he made some plays look BB memes is gonna have to keep it up because this wide receiver group is not good at all so and from a depth perspective obviously a and Shahed are very good players especially Ave but but there's not a lot of depth and outside of those two you expect at Perry to make the roster so that's three you maybe expect Cedric to make it that's four who are the other two is it St Brown I don't know is it bub memes maybe do you want to go sign another receiver out there it's possible is it uh you know I don't think he would make it but is it Kevin Austin you know I I there's just not a lot of talent out there so we'll see where the Saints decide to go but bub memes showed a little bit today he's got to keep it up though because this is a great opportunity for guys because there's not a lot of depth here L says fosy and Turner only reason making the team will be for depth purposes due to the long season but in my opinion they're so underwhelming dude fosy today was the day where I was like officially done with fosy and it has nothing to do with the performance- wise and more so the player he is there's like no athleticism to his game right now he looks so stiff out there once you get your hands on him he doesn't have that secondary move to kind of shed the blocker and make a play and I'm not trying to defend pton Turner but I've seen pton pyton Turner make plays in a football game I have not seen Isaiah fosy do anything substantial in an NFL game no matter if it's a regular season no matter if it's a preseason haven't seen [ __ ] from him and today I was just focused on him in that fourth quarter he does not have the athletic power and and just overall fire power to make plays when you need them to be made I'm not saying pton Turner could I know fosy can't and that really bothers me AI says this season's gonna be just like last season from what I see but the defense is going to be diabolical uh Jordan young yeah look I mean I I I think that the defense is going to be diabolical I do agree with that and Chase young is gonna be the key but as for last season I don't know I can see it playing out similar but if they can run the football decent they will make games a little bit more entertaining for us fans a little bit more entertaining not a ton but a little bit because there'll be an identity last year there was none forgive says fos is still disappointing the burst is just not there even being out there going against third and fourth stringers I agree man I agree wholeheartedly he does not look like he has the juice at all at all and it breaks my heart but here we are second round pick looks like that's down the drain Zachary says really thought the first team o line played better Rattler was running for his life defense will undoubtedly win his games this year agree on all three parts thought o line for first ring played better rler was running for his life and it was very apparent early right fumble first drive uh bot snap the second drive and then kind of carried over uh as for the defense yeah I I do believe this defense can win them games this year year remember they're not going to play you know their schedule look they play tough opponents but there are certain opponents I can see the defense locking in on Buccaneers can see that Broncos rookie quarterback I could see them locking in Panthers twice can see that against Deshawn Watson I could see that uh against the Giants and Daniel Jones I can see them locking in against the Raiders with muu can see them doing well there so there will be games this year where I can see the Saints defense being otherworldly good John says a major problem for the Saints last year was letting mobile QBs Run free doesn't look much different now yep uh good thing for them though not a not a ton of mobile QBs on the schedule like not a ton of like speedsters jayen Daniels that could be a problem um let's see Jaylen Herz could be a problem dax's got some Mobility Mahomes obviously Shifty but you don't consider him a runner outside of that like I don't think the Saints B Nicks is Shifty but they don't play a ton of you know Elite they don't play Lamar um let's see who else they're going to miss out on they you know they don't play Josh Allen they don't play Kyler Murray they don't play Caleb Williams they don't play against who else are possibly missing from the AFC that I may have missed they don't play Anthony Richardson don't play against Trevor Lawrence so a lot of those young quarterbacks that got some wiggle to them they they don't play against which is good forg says Rattler didn't look comfortable may still be hurt it's possible it's it's definitely possible Libby says totally agree Chris that's what I'm looking for another playmaker this regards to TM yeah I agree 1,000% % like tesm I know they make jokes I know we talk about his contract a lot I know we talk about the fact that he plays about every position known to man he is just a football player and I think this year the best version of the Saints will be one that uses him the way we saw today I really firmly believe that's the best version of tesm Mo that that's where the Saints will Thrive Zachary says at had some drops tonight was hoping he'd be that third guy Jawan still hasn't had that breakout year I agree 1,00% that this offense will at times feel very onedimensional it will be very very run heavy there is no doubt about it no doubt about it and I think that's okay as long as you're running the football well it's okay to be run heavy but you got to make sure you run the football better uh T Le says was Penning any better he was better today especially run blocking uh I'm excited to go watch this back and see how it looks on a second view but I thought I thought Penning looked pretty solid look there was no egregious plays from Penning today that's what I would say I thought he looked better didn't see anything where I thought oh man this guy looks like you know an absolute mess like I thought last week so that to me is a plus Carl Dunn says rest in peace at Daniels uh then adds Rattler had a 180 turn from last week uh first off yes rest in peace said Daniels man absolute uh legend in the the journalism reporting industry especially when it comes to New Orleans um obviously what happened is terrible and you know it's crazy because it just feels feels like you know we're a couple weeks removed from him reporting on the team and then all of a sudden this happens and obviously that was just heartbreaking especially on Friday to to hear that news and um it's tough to kind of go through the weekend and then you kind of try to operate as business as usual but it it's tough to say so um rest in peace to him my my thoughts and prayers are obviously with his family at this time I I can't imagine what they're going through and everyone who's worked with him because it's not just um you know family there's a huge impact um on people that he had as for Spencer Rattler yeah I mean last we optimism is at a at a 100 this week it definitely went down a couple pegs no doubt about it Libby says I thought the team played well even though we lost I agree at least the starters the guys who needed to play well they played well MKC uh papa says I feel better about the Saints T in the loss Robinson orgy Peyton oine not looking ass and the running game um uh and the running game I guess you said feel better than I did in last week's victory yeah I can see that because guys you know are going to play this year looked better today and I I I 1,00% share that sentiment with you and understand why you feel that way for sure it it totally checks out Tanner says our secondary is scary deep 1,000% Libby says Chase young looks great Fred as everyone who has played Madden has created a defensive and 99 overall that looks like Chase young Chase young is The Terminator of football players he looks like he he's a cyborg built in a lab the Dude Looks like he's made out of Adam antheum he is from a physical perspective a beast now from a health perspective he looks close to 100% probably 100% and Chase's burst right now he looks like the chase young we thought we'd see out of Ohio State and I'm not saying that's gonna happen this year but Chase young if he balls out the Saints got to just pay him whatever he wants because that could be your key to figuring out the pass rush because you haven't drafted well Peyton Turner Marcus Davenport Isaiah fosy wh whiff whiff and yeah Chase young has been through injuries but he's also just 25 years old and you can have him for several years if he balls out this year and I think he has the talent to do that so uh he's looked great I'm definitely excited about what they got going on with him for GI says the defense will definitely be top 10 da always has guys in the right position even with the touchdown that dobs had it should uh it should have been stuffed he had Jordan Howen in the right position you're right absolutely right how'd it Miss a tackle and that's a seven-point swing right there so I'm not worried about this defense at all if anything I'm very confident in this defense I think this is gonna be a very good defense this year and if the tant are gonna win football games it's all gonna come down to that defense being able to kind of suffocate their opponents and you know be able to to play the field position game maybe force some turnovers lby says I think we need to rest a lot of our defense next week and some of our first string offense I would be totally okay with that I don't think this this first string defense needs to play anymore they've done what they've needed to do in the preseason Nathan says we have to sign Rico Peyton I mean I I think look last week I said he's definitely gonna make he's definitely earned that minimum of practice squad spot another good performance today you got to start thinking about whether or not you just put him on the main roster trade AK or Moran for o line we have to here's the problem right the idea isn't terrible who is gonna trade a good offensive lineman right now though because there's not a lot of teams that just have so much offensive line depth whereas other teams have running back depth other teams to degree it be top three because if I have a an elite quarterback duo with a talented defensive line that needs to stay healthy but talented a top three linebacker with really nice role players AC uh you know opposite of him and Pete Werner and Willie gay one of the smarter safeties in the league in Tyron Matthew and although I don't think he's a good head coach one of the better defensive Minds Dennis Allen how does that unit not dominate you know I I I just can't see any other scenario Margaret says we need a veteran backup quarterback we're going to be in trouble if Carr gets hurt yeah I think they're in trouble regardless if he gets hurt uh veteran or not veteran they went the veteran route last year they decided to go the younger route this year um I felt better about about it last week that's fair I don't think this we we exactly saw um a lot of risky throws but I also think the Saints are not going to have as explosive as an offense as we want them to especially when Shahed and Alvin AR aren't out there and they weren't today Boston says do you think we will still struggle against mobile QBs this season all the 49ers QBs were running around like crazy and we couldn't get a single St sack yeah I just think that's the Saints Mo what I will say about that though is Chase young being on this being on this team if he's healthy maybe that changes things a little bit because Chase will give you more speed and Power on the edge uh and maybe you could close that Gap when it comes to chasing down mobile QBs so if I want to give you some optimism that's what I would say being able to have Chase young and Carl Granderson on the edges a little bit better than what we're accustomed to seeing Fred says the blueprint on offense looks like it's going to be to pound the ball and hit some play action Shahed speed is going to demand respect play good defense might win ugly but I'm a little optimistic you should be you should be optimistic about that part I mean look guys running the football is a remedy for so many things and for the Saints who don't necessarily have a great passing attack running the football could be just so so key for them this year when it comes to saving your ass it really could and I I'm not I'm not gonna say that beating up on a secondary Niners defense solves everything and is the key to this team and that that we saw what this team's going to be week in week out I can't say that but you cannot deny that that one drive when it comes to scheme look totally different than anything that Saints have done with their run game the last three years with Carmichael you know it you know it to be true so at least by that part you know Thomas says Howen looks like he's in a sophomore slump yeah he has not taken advantage of that positional battle opposite of Ty Matthew is he has not grabbed that job like Dennis Allen liked him to or at least hoped that he would and and right now at this point I don't see how he could start let's go to the penalties as a whole the Saints had five penalties this uh Sunday against the ners last week against the Cardinals the Saints had nine penalties so yeah when you pretty much cut that this DA's last chance this season to prove he's an okay Coach I feel like this is actually all his coaching staff that he picked and H and wanted now so no excuse maybe he just needed a good OC who Derek Carr's your quarterback nine and eight you played better at the end of the year but it was too little too late they couldn't make the playoffs so you missed the playoffs again even though you got the quarterback you won so now you get rid of the OC you bring in the OC you want and you got your Top Choice Clint kubak was Dennis Allen's Top Choice so he got his Top Choice at QB he got his Top Choice at OC and you know that his defense is still going to play good play well excuse me well there's going to be no excuses so it should be his last chance will it I can't say for Shan you know I I really I would love to say with with with absolute certainty that if da does not coach well this year and this team goes seven and 10 he's fired but I thought that was going to be the case last year it wasn't so I I don't know what this team it should be his last chance though Jerry says it better not be the same starting lineup to start week one in September uh are we talking about the offense are we talking about it's got to be offense right I mean we'll see there's gonna be some changes for sure Luke says what is the outlook on Rasheed shahid's injury so interesting you mentioned that I you know for his injury I believe they're labeling it as a toe foot injury which is not ideal he's probably got a walking boot on if uh if I had to guess especially cuz you're just trying to keep that thing completely away when it comes to movement um but I think the worst part about it is he's had a toe injury a foot injury and a hamstring injury all this year so I love ret I think he's great but you know that that can be an absolute [ __ ] I don't know what other the way to word of the world to describe but that's an absolute [ __ ] to deal with when it's all lower body and you feel like you're going you're going to have to start compromising for certain things that just aren't 100% so I hope Shah's good for week one but right now I think it's way too early to say because those take and say he is he's not but he can run block and that is where you see him most confident and I think that for the Saints if they're going to figure out a way to get themselves in good shape from an o line perspective just run the football L says I don't think you could stash Rico Peyton he's been a gem for the three to four corners we put out there yeah I I don't think he's a you could sneak on the practice squad at this rate I just don't I really don't Grant says it's tough feeling like we're starting at 1 and four out of the gate I feel like Ave is losing hard to a bad year this year and he may start requesting out I don't think so because the one thing I'll say about Ave about the because people have brought that up and that's not a knock on you for bringing it up I think I don't think it's a bad comment to bring up about whether or not he could request out but this is the way I would look at it guys chryst La the one thing these guys want at this stage in their career when they're this young they want to get paid and if Chris plays really well this year he's going to get paid by the Saints and that is all that should matter to him right now and also when you're a wide receiver I think that's got to be the priority getting paid right I mean Tyreek Hill left the Chiefs and yeah they've won two Super Bowls that him and that part probably sucks but Tyreek Hill's also getting paid more than just about every wide receiver in the league so that part probably feels better than the two Super Bowls sometimes and again I know it's it's easier to say for Tyreek who's won a Super Bowl as opposed to Chris who again year three you haven't won won anything yet and you're probably not going to win anything this year but I think 's motivation has to be you ball out this year and you get paid by the Saints and look in two three four years time if he's still not winning yeah all right maybe we could talk about whether or not he wants out but I I would not worry about that anytime soon because even if you're worried about him and Derek Carr's Dynamic he will be in a Saints uniform longer than Derek car I could promise you that part you know AI says the old line you're missing that kind of physical wide receiver over the middle of the field that's what I think they're missing this run game opens up I don't see them depending on play action too much we just need Carr to put up at least uh 17 20 points a game young and Jordan they're going to be diabolical C Jordan might give them a little something on the inside guys I think that NASCAR package can be pretty lethal if if these guys can stay healthy and I and I do agree that is that is going to be that that is going to be the calling card of this team defense and hopefully running the football hel Doza says I'm just a little worried considering we had a bottom five rushing attack last year um yeah I look I am not debating that part but I thought their scheme last year with Pete carmichel stunk I mean how many times did Pete carmichel decide to just run in between the tackles on second and 10 with Alvin and it never worked so that part bothered me I think you're seeing a little bit the pitch plays today were decent hit and miss Hit or Miss at times but a little bit decent and I think when you have and again I don't know if this will work against better defenses you know first team guys but when T Mill is your lead Blocker in a certain situation there's so much attention drawn towards him it it could it could be really good and again I don't know if it's gonna work but he opened up that 15 yard run I believe it was for Jamal Williams so let's let's give Clin kubak some time and let's see how they look especially when you get Alvin back in in this room because I think Alvin being there is going to be huge for this team obviously because he's their best running back and I don't think it's close so I think um I can understand the concerns because last year's running game was abysmal but there's a different play caller here someone who actually wants to have some intent here so we will see Melo says Howen doesn't deserve it uh give it to number 28 Howen he's he has not looked good he has not looked good at all it's it's very upsetting Ernest says I'm very excited about my Falcons this year do we think we win the division well damn it Ernest why why you coming in here with your Falcons comments um do I think the Falcons win the division I'd say they should be the favorites right now just from a talent perspective and then huge week for them adding judon and and Justin Simmons what I will say though about the Falcons is I think the Falcons have similar concerns to the Saints can their quarterback play well now I think Kirk is better than Derek but Kirk's coming off with Tor Achilles and I think they have the same question the Saints have is their coach a head coach I know Rahe Morris is a very good coordinator I know Dennis Allen is a very good coordinator I don't know if either can coach and they've both had multiple opportunities to coach that to me is the question that is going to be the question so do I think the Falcons can win the division absolutely do I think they will win the division I'm not sure I'm going to say Falcons I'll give them the edge but it's not by a ton like I I maybe 40% goes to the Falcons 30% goes to the Saints 30% goes to the Bucks like I don't I don't I don't love the division enough to give someone the slight Edge or I mean the huge Edge excuse me I'll give him a slight Edge but not a huge Edge so we'll see but the the Falcons have the talent there's no question about it but I I don't know if they have the coach just like I don't know if the Saints have the coach although you guys know I feel about da I I'm pretty confident they don't have the coach El Mendoza says I'm a little worried about being a run first team with the questions around the o line also any chance we still got Michael of the guy I could not believe that snap I I really couldn't believe that snap and and luckily for Lemieux the Saints don't have great old lineman maybe he can make the roster still although after that snap I would have cut his ass that was the worst Snap I've seen krio paidon play safety I mean I I don't anticipate him switching over to safety but look man Saints might try to get a little might might try to get a little cute with that secondary move some guys around but this is a this is a cornerback through and through and look at the way he plays the position by the way he plays a position like a natural and I think for the Saints you'll probably play Jonathan Abram opposite of Ty Matthew if I had to guess that that would that would be my prediction as of now and obviously it's subject to change but I I would say your your better chance for safety opposite of Tyron Matthew is you're looking at either Jan Abram or um maybe you go Will Harris that that's what I would say but I I don't think you move Rico Peyton and like I mentioned before I I think Rico Peyton at this point I think he's kind of has he kind of has to make the roster with the way play you know Fred says I noticed Will Harris got the start over Howen has Howen already lost lost a job I think he has I think he has and I I think another thing that I would say about Howen when you have an opportunity um fourth and goal to end the half by stuffing Josh dobs at the goal line and you whiff on that tackle you are not helping your case at all still think he makes the roster but you're not helping your case and it stinks because I think Jordan Howen has potential you know I just I just haven't seen it from him though and that's unfortunate is Kool-Aid good I saw him limping off the field One play but I left to do something afterwards so Dennis Allen spoke to the media he said Koolaid McKenry has a knee injury in quote said I think we avoided anything serious so not a ton to hear but hey avoiding something serious that that's what we like to hear so hopefully cool a is good and he'll be ready for week one but obviously that's not ideal AI says I'm loving the updates over the years to think for the Falcons and the reason I can't just Crown them besides the fact that you got to play the games is they got a quarterback coming off at Tor killes they have a coach who is not proven that he's a good coach good great defensive coordinator really good guy just don't know if he's a good head coach you have a defense that is still unproven and there is Talent right you did add judon you that is going to be scary because I think elon's got worldly Talent like incredible talent I know Ado's good I know how good Latimore is when he's on the field how are you gonna throw on those three corners if they're all playing at this type of level I don't know and if they're playing great in coverage and they're forcing quarterbacks to hold on the football just a split second too long then guess what happens Chase young hits gets home r gets home car Granderson gets home Cam Jordan gets home someone will get after the quarterback so that's why when I talked about the defense before how they could be top five that's why I feel that way I I really think they have the dogs on defense to make it happen forg says we draft all these Edge rushers with early picks and they always fail but we draft a third round star in 2017 and he's not playing with us shout out to Trey Hendrickson I miss him man what a dog he was imagine him on this defense that would have been sick that would have been sick you could tell going against this West Coast scheme and practice every day has made the defense more disciplined and not falling for the eye candy like we did against the Rams last season yeah that was a tough one uh Shawn McVey diced them up but I do agree on that part I think when you verse a scheme that's a little bit more methodical and has more variety to it yeah you're going to be exposed to more and and that'll help out on game day you won't feel as thrown off B boys 504 says Will Harris thrown in with the first unit it looked like he's been there making plays early then Howen gets in and you could tell the difference yep not his day I I don't even know at this point how's probably third string at best with the way he's played Fred saysi really like Latimore I hope he stays the same for life but it seems like he get hurt brushing his teeth these days that's pretty funny uh would be nice for him to stay healthy all year yeah I think this is his last year with the Saints this I don't have any knowledge of that this is not Insider information here uh I just think this is gonna be Lor's last year with the Saints I just think the injury history and and I think the two sides are ready to move on so hopefully just goes out with the bang and he plays great this year uh braaz is getting more and more dominant every game as well he's going to be a monster he was in the QB face the past two games every um every play nearly yeah I think breaze again guys this is a number one a number one recruit from his class it's all about health with this kid and if he's healthy and boy he looks it I just don't think there's a lot that could stop him Chase young speed off the edge is looking to be great for our run defense which has been awful the past few years it's definitely taking a step back I think it's more so because the defensive end uh defensive tackles if I'm being quite honest but yeah Chase young blew up a couple run plays today I think that this is this is the time and the speed at linebacker is goingon to help obviously having Demario back Willie gay is gonna give you more speed there Pete Warner is a really good run Defender I think this run defense gonna be a little bit better for sure I think ladimore is gone after the season which is part of the reason they drafted Kool-Aid yeah and on top of it Great Value I think the Saints love the value there but I agree too it wasn't just value it was hey we we to move on from Latimore and this is a good replacement if we do that just imagining a faga and Will Campbell combo possibly next year yeah I mean I haven't looked at a mock draft yet but will Campbell correct me if I'm wrong I feel like he's got to go like top three top five and I just don't think the Saints will pick there but I mean can the Saints get emry Jones I guess I mean that I'll settle for emry Jones I'm not I'm not picky in that regard but we'll see we'll absolutely see the Saints uh though overall guys I think that defensively today excellent performance and offensively Run game looked sharp obviously what we saw from the backups just not really what we wanted to see I'll end it with this one if Latimore is gone next year please for the love of St Michael and the Holy Spirit don't trade him to the Eagles yeah I I totally agree I do not want to see Latimore playing on Philly and man that seems like a destination for him that makes sense because they do not have good corners but I don't want to see that um so we'll see what happens though I think the Saints have the talent to be a top five defense maybe top three defensive team we'll see how it goes this year all really falls on the o line the Run game we'll see how it progresses but honestly guys even though they lost today I think there was enough to feel a little bit better about the scheme feel a little bit better about Clint kubak and we'll see we'll see what happens but I appreciate you guys so much for stopping by spending this hour
