[Applause] ladies and gentlemen welcome into Tom C Patriots Talk podcast here is former quick slance co-host longtime quick slance co-host Devon mccordi you may also know him from his time with the New England Patriots and from his time at NBC of course you mostly know him from being the co-host on step how are you I'm good I mean it's a great two days for me yesterday I went on the kadam show today I'm on with Tom Curran it's like quick slance reunited we just need Nate somewhere in here and we're good to go you know what's funny is when you and Kay would get together it would kind of be a little bit of a conspiratorial situation with you two in the studio where you'd be laughing I'm like what are you guys laughing about what you never mind never mind and I was like it young people talk don't feel it was young people talk and I would say things that I thought were either informative or generally amusing and they would just exchange looks it was really say old people talk was basically the upshot of that um let's cut to the chase real quick on the draft how can you tell when a rookie walks through the door as to whether or not he's got the correct makeup to hit the ground running in the NFL so I think I think what I liked about the Patriots drafting before we get into I think you can't draft all the same guys right you draft some guys that when they come in right away I'm like this guy's sharp you know the Jawan Bentley's of the world that come in and I can see leadership on them I can see you know everything about them that's just ready to go that I'm like all right this guy's going to lead in the future um he's a guy that they they're going to need in this building but then you get other guys who are just dogs guys that you don't realize maybe till you get on the field leadership and they might take a while to pick some things up but you realize right away all right this guy can play football Jamie Collins comes in we knew right away in the beginning of his career Jam's not gonna probably be a leader he was quiet but then you got on the field and you were like damn like this dude and then in that same class you had Logan Ryan and Don Harmon who were more kind of lowkey they're be in the weight room every day first guy like they were the kind of leader types and I think that's the kind of blend you want in a class and I thought the Patriots did that um with just and again I don't know these kids you know really well coming out of college but just reading what people had to say before the draft and then obviously once they get drafted the kind of breakdown of it so uh yeah I mean I think it it ranges all over I think the biggest thing is guys that are veterans see what players are as soon as you know the the pass catch and and coverage guys when you get in OTAs and mini camp you get a little snapshot of that I'll never forget Al Landon Roberts coming up to me his rookie year and we're OTAs in mini camp and he's like hey hey D I'm just letting you know man I know like right now I'm struggling a little bit but when we get those pads on that's when you're gonna see what I can do and I'm like you're like 511 linebacker like you need to be running around out here making plays in the passing game and then we put the pads on and I was like oh he wasn't playing he was running oh killing people so um you you just never know I think you got to have some patience and I think the biggest thing is help these guys out when they get there help them along the way try to make things easier so they can get and show why they got drafted it's funny in 2019 Nel Harry came in and he had a very very good camp um and he had a very good preseason start against the Lions and I'll never forget this you know you're watching these kids but he was hurt you guys went to Tennessee and he was working out off in those big remember the big buildings at the end of the field it's kind of open air and he must have finished his workout and you guys playing on three different fields and the starters were all on one field and I remember watching him he came out I was on field watching the the defense I think and he came out and he didn't have any shoes on and he was just flipping a ball to himself and wearing a tank top and he just kind of was aimlessly Meandering and I'm a sports writer who the hell knows what that evaluation is but I'm like I don't think I've ever seen a guy walking around aimlessly wouldn't you want to go over and watch as a rookie offense just be a sponge stand there so you every time they turn around there's nille who can't play right now in your face and he just meandered and I just took that as a I wonder I wonder if he's all in not all I wonder if he's engaged I know what you I know what you mean has the direction and I think that's the thing with like the majority of of guys that come in right you get some guys that for their whole life they've been the guy sometimes they've never been hurt they don't they don't fully understand what to do with that then you get some guys who come in and to me this doesn't matter what round you're drafting I think sometimes when people watch the draft they get these Notions of like this first round first round pick we got to be worried that you know he's going to think he's all that but like they don't know that guy's backstory of how he got to be a first rounder and like his work ethic where you could get a guy that gets drafted in the sixth round but their whole life like I've seen that in New England too guy that went to a BigTime school was a big- time recruit whole life it was all upside and like to them getting drafted in a six round was just somebody else's mistake and now they were going to prove that it was a mistake and it never clicked and call it three months to make maybe a year they probably never played another snap in the NFL so it's just hard to find that mix because sometimes and I think the key thing to me is too is what when you draft a guy what is already in the room so I looked at I looked at um drafting pul from Washington I was in love with uh ad Mitchell from Texas I watched him on film thought he was phenomenal and I think some of the things that came out about him whether it's true or not and I know Chris Balor I love his response of people putting their the sources thing put your name on it I agree 100% hey let's roll that right now John for the hell of it John Henry roll the Chris ballad sound on ad Mitchell we've done a nice job segue so we'll get into the Jaylen pul versus ad Mitchell this is AD Mitchell from Texas drafted 52 drop for alleged character concern is Chris Bard I mean I read some of the that was said on T I mean just the typical excuse my language our typical League unnamed sources you know bad interview that's such I mean is it's like put your name like put your name on it I I I'm tired of we tear these young men down these are 21 22 young men and if you can if people out there can tell me they don't they're perfect in their lives it's crap it's crap this is a good kid and you know for for that for those reports to come out like you know my I said it last year I it's it's bull I'm sorry I apologize for the language I don't but I do so to me when you when you look at that I think New England in that wide receiver room they said okay as we look up we don't have a young leader like we don't have a young guy that we're saying all right this is our future we want other guys to follow him and I think because Tyler Hughes was at the University of Washington with pul I think he was able to speak to that hey if we get this guy in the room he is going to set the example I said it back in March last year jacobe jacobe Myers was going to be that guy for them they lost him he goes to the Raiders you lost Edelman the year before like you need a guy that when other guys come in they say okay that's how I'm successful and I think pul fits that for them now as they try to create just more leadership overall on the whole offensive side of the ball Hunter Henry David Andrews and then you're you're kind ofre like those guys have to now step into that ra Andre has to become more of a Vo leader he has to do all those things yet to be seen I think Kendrick Bourne being around and being there fulltime I think he has great leadership tra strictly energy what he brings day in and day out the whole offense can say we need to be like KB but I think that they're trying to find more of that across the board you made a real that was one of the first things you said last year to me when jacobe Myers moved on was none of these guys who are here not to you weren't demeaning them or deriding them you were just saying none of these guys really understand how we do things here you've just removed jacobe and it's not like he's a massive out in front of the room leader but you have to have an Institutional knowledge of what the expectations are are in turn was okay was Devonte and JuJu and uh booty and you know just taquan and you're like someone has to have the Reigns just so by example they're showing this is how we're prepared and they didn't really have that which is not that's not why they didn't have a good offense last year but it helps to have the guy as you build culture like you want that you want some guys that you can look up when I got to New England you know on each level you could see that right in on the offensive line Logan manins was the example Matt Light was the example of what it meant and those two guys were different Logan manins was country old school not many words Matt Light was the bell of the ball laughs jokes but like the work ethic you could figure out as a player all right I might me more like this guy more like that but at the end of the day they do what they need to do to be great Patriots you had Kevin ful you had Tom Brady obviously you had all of these guys throughout the loog room Deon Branch came back for a little while all these guys and I think like you need that you need every position group to have different guys to look to to say okay if it's getting hard what do I do if we're winning right now how do I continue to be consistent you need people to help people become pros and you can't have every player like that that's why I liked pul and then you go get Baker like you need to of some guys that can just go out and play they'll figure some things out that you might want to do off the field and all of that they'll figure that out as they go but as they're going they're making plays they're Playmakers you need a little bit of that as well is it hard to assimilate when you're a rookie second rounder a rookie fourth rounder with huge upside coming into a room where there's veterans like ju guu who you know or taquon Thornton who can look at say that's not a good sign for me I think you got to be honest I think that's the biggest thing from a coaching staff standpoint is hey look like this National Football League when you're a veteran you watch the draft different right everybody talks about man what who you excited to get I'll never forget watching drafts and watching I remember keesan Johnson was there and they drafted Dwayne Jarrett and he was I can't wait to show this young boy the ropes and blah blah blah and then like a week later they they cut him or traded them and it was just like when you become a veteran you look at that draft you go okay all right yep that's what they think of the room oh damn two receivers okay not all of us are going to be here and I think that's being real as a coaching staff as you know whether it's Tyler Hughes and and tawon Underwood I know are the two receiver coaches in that room Vell as the OC I think you're just upfront with guys hey we drafted two young guys into this room for a reason we we feel like there are guys that can help us we're going to need them guess what competition is here and I'll never forget one of the best phrases I think coach belich used to tell us in all the big games if you love competition this is where you want to be and that would be when we were going to Pittsburgh for a 4:30 game or we had a big Sunday Night Football game it was if you love competition at 817 820 be here ready to go and I think for that wide receiver room if you love competition this isn't one day for a game this is competition day in and day out the best guys will be here and if not you got to find a new job like that's the National Football League Drake may we haven't even touched on him yet he's gonna come into a situation where he's obviously excited to be here he's enthused but the he doesn't understand the expectations of being in New England yet it's really hard and I'm not trying to say oh this hard media hard fan base everybody's kind of hard but it's different different it is different here the expectations the people are very very quick to find something to say that sucks and I don't like that about you I mean it's funny because there's not many franchises you can go into right away where it's like we we last won our Super Bowl this oh we got three Super Bowl titles after this dat oh no we have three more but like that's what you hear as soon as you get to New England I mean I talk about it all the time I got up there and they were like hey are you aware that nobody wanted you as a firstr draft pick that bill just drafted a special teams player questions it was like damn you feel like a reach yeah like I'm like we can't get a congrats I can't at least get like my first press conference being like this congratulations and it was like no like this is what it means to play in this market um but I think the thing for him that's going to be unique is they they have some time and they have to I think they have to show some patience um I think to really make sure they put him out there when he's ready to go and when they feel like this team is ready to go out there and compete and give him the best chance to be a good player I think I think they're in a good situation where they are very open and collaborative they continue to talk about that about where they are and what they have right now and I think the reality is okay the bills had a lot a lot going on this off season Aaron Rogers for the Jets is coming back off an injury Miami has some pretty big injuries off last year on that defense and they're still but they they still should be a pretty good team these other teams in your division should be pretty good to me it's not a rush to say all right this is our year get Drake May out of there out there as soon as possible you brought Jobe brassette in for a reason he's dealt with some of the worst situations quarterbacks should ever have to deal with his rookie year he had to play against Houston after jimmmy got hurt like I still remember that the guy's going in there then he plays the next week with torn ligaments in his thumb he can't play and then he went last year backed up Sam Howell never got a chance to even compete to play and then at the end of the year they were like hey buddy go in the game and I think I think the Patriots should lean on that lean on his ability to be a leader to go and take over an offense and go and still give you a chance to compete I think better than you were last year from the offensive side but also I think he can kind of let Drake may watch for a little while see how it goes all right this how I want to operate this all right if if we're a little shaky at left tackle because we get one injury and we're still searching for dip all right these are some of the things I might need to go to I think it's really hard as a rookie if you get thrown into a little bit of unstable situation right away like it can go downhill in a hurry and I know you guys will not be taking it easy if he goes out there and has a three interception game and they lose I don't think the media is going to be like oh it's okay hey Drake we knew this we knew these days would come like I just don't see that I think that can be tough for a young player yeah it can be and and I think what's interesting too is you have to understand the urgency of the organization with Robert Craft at 82 saying I want a top tier quarterback and now it's it's December 30th and you still can't open the present that's under your tree you got to sit there and continue to stare at it when's it ready we're still putting it together you know I want to play with it I want to watch it and so I think there's that pressure of urgency for this franchise to return to where it was after you know a forign 13 season but I think but I also think it helps because they just they just had that right they just had the new president we open right away and there's so many other factors in why work but like the Toy's gone already like we you know my kids open their toys all the time on Christmas a week later I can't find the toy I know because you haven't played with it since Christmas morning then just threw it to the side and I think I think having that knowledge I think it might be a little bit easier for Elliot wolf and gerro may I think it might be easier to say hey we were all present for what just happened like we're we're trying to avoid that we're like I get it all right this guy wasn't here all right this offensive coordinator wasn't there and this guy but at the end of the day it didn't work so let's try to not go down that same path and again I agree with you if it gets to December and and he's still not ready to play it's going to be hard but I I just think there's something to not just having these few preseason games where honestly it's nothing like what you're going to see in a regular season and then you get out there and you're used to seeing some looks but now every single play you have safeties running down to the left they're running in the right oh this guy that lined up at middle linebacker is running through the middle because he's like this he's like Marte mapu who's like a linebacker SL a safety but I don't know what he is he has number four on it like it's Mass confusion and next thing you know the first three games you saw three different defenses three different third down sets three different red area like and you're like how the hell I think if you can just ease a little bit of that to start the season Deshawn Watson I remember didn't start right away Tom Savage started in Houston didn't take long I think it might have been like week two or week three or something like that he got in he took over from there I just think some part of that might help I don't think they have to go full Patrick Mahomes where I think different because Alex Smith was already there running so was a little different would you ever consider and I'm just thinking of this as you're talking giving the kid like not right away but say week four sometime in October go give him a series give him a series Midway through the first half I mean you don't have to pretend where does that hold the whole team hostage who's trying to win the game for themselves and say what are we doing we trying to win or we just trying to everything's about Drake I mean you could go and give him some quote unquote minutes but you can't do that in the NFL it's hard it's hard and everything is about Drake so the team needs to realize that and I think again coming off of last year those guys on defense are probably willing to do anything you're losing games six to zip 10 to seven 10 to six like you sit here now coming in in the next year if it means not starting Drake May right away because when he get gets in later he'll be better if I'm a Defender I'm like hey do it because the last thing I want to do is jump right back into we have to hold teams to zero points forget three points forget six we got to hold them to zero and I think that kills a a team more than anything even if you're gonna put a guy in in the middle of the game and then take him out if it works then guys won be mad but if it doesn't work I think you put yourself in a tough situation so I would avoid doing that I think there's an element of if aame gets out of hand and you want to get them some snaps at the end of the game or if a game's not going well in the second or third game and you're like all right we've seen enough in practice over and over again because he's gonna start to get looks in practice with the defense he's going to get a whole training camp with the defense gerro Mayo defensive minded coach hey start off with the offense right we no motions no anything hey defense all out Blitz today like that that's the element of having a defensive head coach is it's going to be harder on the offense I think through training camp what should help Drake may you guys went after Mack pretty good with throwing a lot at him in 2021 that was Advanced didn't you yeah and I think like he's a guy that now is like oh no it was bad it didn't work but when we were in training camp I was highly impressed two-minute drill like when we got into two-minute drill and cam um had the whole covid thing and cam wasn't there we were in our full two minute drill I'm the one calling the plays like we're we're dialing up it's it's the second down the clock's moving we're going all out Blitz and he's just handling I'm like okay like it's only two weeks in the training camp this kid showing that he can hit so I think you start to see that you got to get a feeling of okay this guy's here right now and I think New England will do that I think they'll start to see okay Drake May's here okay where's jacobe at okay if Jacob's here Drake May's here I think a certain thing too with us is when Cam Newton came that that second year was kind of his first year fully getting into what we wanted to do and I think the differences of so I think you saw there was a little bit of an element of like all right these guys aren't that far apart and actually like picking up the offense play and what they could do on the field yes Cam Newton and what he could do was way above Matt Jones but I think the understanding of the offense I think they kind of started on an even playing field of trying to figure out all right this is what we're going to in this new year compared to when cam came in 2020 it was like man we don't have time to fully go through this we're going to do and work off your strengths and we're going to go from there um and I think this will be a little different because jacobe already has a head start in this offense he was with vanel uh two years ago in Cleveland running this offense so I think that will be when you watch with your naked eye the the coaches the defenses like everybody watching you should get a Vibe and I think if Drake May if you start to see day one and you guys will be there every day and and like you keep seeing it get better then it wouldn't be crazy to be like hey he's done it let's throw him out there day one I mean he's gonna have some hellacious practices in July and August there's gonna be some he just threw his sixth pick you know he just he just hit the goal post from the 20 on and and then what and if they do joint practices because now you get used to seeing one defensive scheme and then let's say one of your preseason games is against a team that runs a totally different defensive scheme so then it's like all right here's a new adjustment here's something new that you haven't seen you only seen us do this a little bit on cards with our defense looking at a card and trying to do it but now you're going to actually see people who do this day in and day out all right this is a whole another defense I think there's an element as a Young quarterback you have to you have to see that all right yesterday it was this these were my rules this is how I execute it today it's brand new oh yeah and that's just on first and second down on third down yesterday that was different than what's on third down today and then we're going to go down to the Red Zone and there's going to be some little similarities some like once you start getting in those situational things where what we say when we watch quarterbacks is all that matters right Tom Brady's the goat because in the fourth quarters third down Red Zone he was like so efficient where he had no incompletions or and it was just like wow this so you want your quarterback to have a good feeling in those moments before you just throw them out there to the Wolves is that one of the things that you look for Dev as a teammate and as kind of a student of the game as a defensive leader for improvement for for an indicator when Drake May might be ready is all right he screwed it up the first time how much better does it look the second time or the third or the fourth and that's every player every young player that when they tell you that it's not a lie you have to make mistakes you're going to make mistakes how many times do you make this same mistake if you can avoid doing that you start to build and get better as a player but the biggest thing I've I learned when I was in NFL was consistency how can I become this guy that every time I'm on the field it's just like this and then it's great play right back here great play and every player is trying to do that the sooner you can get to that shows when you're a pro ball player All Pro player or our defense is really good because we have a bunch of guys doing that and I think there's a ton of players this team that's trying to get to that I think you see Michael Wu Kyle Dugger two big time pre agents signing back those guys as young players they're you know those guys now need to be at that level and there's no more like trying to build to that SEC second contract you're the veteran leaders now they're going to need them to be that so then the other guys who were trying to get to that see the example okay that's what this guy's doing he's so consistent I gotta I got to be more like that so I agree 100% I think that's what Drake May will have to do Bill used to always say we gotta stack good days together it doesn't mean the day is perfect but overall stacking good days builds consistency you know it's funny just to go to your side of the ball and two players who were interestingly a little different on that scale played right next to each other with hight Tower and Jamie Collins um high tower like this boom just a sick play and then return and Jamie could have what appeared to me from a lay person he could have breakdowns mistakes go to the wrong spot be overaggressive and then just make a play that few on the planet could make um is that kind of a good illustration because that's going to happen with major Kobe's gonna be and Drake May is gonna be and and it's different right because high tower next to Jamie it's a great it's a great D because we got this guy guy who is a good player great player Dante high tower mayo and spikes exactly not the most super a freak athlete but he'll knock your head off he's gonna play the position right and he's gonna line other guys up Jamie hey we don't really need you to do all that you're a freak go be a freak day in and day out go be a freak whereas quarterback's different like we really can't have you have dips at quarterback because what is that dip is that dip a pick six is it a strip sack because you held the ball on a three step like we need you as soon as you play no matter how young you are we need we need to get you to consistent here then the consistent here then the like we need your level to be getting better but no matter what level you're at we need you to be consistent at that level we can't have the just really bad plays that end us because it's the same thing at you know I mentioned Dugger at safety because safety we need you to be a little bit more consistent too because as Bill used to famously tell me all the time in the meeting room I mean Devin just look behind you I mean just look if if you don't make the play then who who makes the play if not you I mean you're the last line of defense so to me like depending on positions whoever my like chrisen barmore uh Devon gotcha go crazy whether you're consistent or not whether you're in your right Gap the coaches going to Care the next day in the meeting room but during the game nobody cares CU there's a plenty other people behind you to make the play and I used to love sending our meetings because it it would be annoying to hear that but it's the truth like certain guys can't do that they can't play that way Dante high tower what he brought to the team he couldn't play that way we needed him to be consistent we needed him Jamie for what he brought jumping jumping over freaking people and blocking kicks we needed him to play free and loose and not feel like he had to be perfect because he then like you just said made plays for one that helped win the game and plays that literally in the whole NFL he was probably one of the three guys that can make it so it's it's understanding then I think his roster building it's putting a team together where all of that stuff makes sense and blends well together but you like what they did in the draft you like the May pick you like the the receiver picks yeah I do and I like that they went and got a tackle um again we always always read these reports these breakdowns of all right this guy's ceiling is a swing tackle all right well what was Michael a wayu ceiling right his his ceiling was he played tackle or whatever he played in college but he's he's a guard he like he he's a guard he can't play and I mean he's a right tackle his best his best film now four years into the NFL has been at right tackle so I I'm always a little like weary of the whole draft breakdowns where you know this year this this past week it was is that you know Josh Rosen getting drafted to the Cardinals received a a grade you know phenomenal pick great Patrick Mahomes of Kansas City received a c okay well give me give me that c any day of the week compared to the a so but I I I think they did what they had to do to try to build this team trying to build it the right way I know people are like oh they drafted another interior lineman I don't know if that has anything to do with that guy as a player but speaks more about what they already have I mean it it still speaks to the guy as a player they drafted him for a reason um so and I think people have to also realize like hey not every pick that they made previously might have been what everybody now agrees with like there were different people making these decisions different people in the room so it might be a little bit of okay this is the style and these are the guys we have but we might be trying to move more towards this way you know and guy like Cole strange was hurt last year we don't know the severity of what they feel he's going through so you bring in another interior lineman but I think when you just look at bigger picture to have a good quarterback you have to have weapons and you have to protect them so and you have to have a running game they have ranj Stevenson they went and got Gibson I think they felt like Hey we're pretty good right there you know maybe maybe I don't know if they got an undrafted free agent at running back maybe we'll do something like that but we feel pretty good in our running game but like we have to make sure we're good on the offensive line and that receiver and then it seems like the the kid they got in the seventh round at tight end might have a chance to be have a role as a Packers or whatever that is a move guy yeah yeah because I think that'll that'll be big for them having Hunter um and having um uh Hooper Hooper at tight end or good spots but I think if they can have another guy who's like oh this guy's a pretty good athlete he moves well I think that can help them to on offense is it going to be tough for bayy zappy to take a rep after Jo Jo Milton and Drake May throw it through the freaking wall it's just going to be hard because of the investment they just made you don't you don't you you sign jacobe brassett all right that's that's some that's splitting some first team reps you drive Drake May with the third pick that okay those are the first team reps those guys should are gonna take a bul because you draft Joe Milton too so all right he's gonna take he's goingon to take some of those third string reps or or young guy reps but first and second team it like it's gonna be jacobe and Drake May because Drake May needs reps he needs more and more reps so I I think it's going to be interesting of do they do they even bring zappy to training camp do they try to allow zappy a better chance maybe elsewhere or do they say hey let's keep zapping in case we got to put him in the game because we know at the level he can go play like I I don't know how exactly how they feel about zappy I know if I'm zappy a little bit I think job security is the best thing so you don't you don't rush out of there not know where you can end up but I think it it's a tough situation as a player where like all right you know you know your team's probably getting a quarterback but then they get two so now it's like okay I'm the fourth guy in the room and then it's a reminder I know it's not realistic but Tom was the fourth guy in the room at one point to but I think the difference is Tom was the fourth guy as a rookie when you're a rookie it's okay so Joe Milton will be considered really the fourth guy in the room right now but if they like Joe Milton enough to say we want to develop him that means Joe Milton's going to get every practice squad reped during the season so it's like all right well how does zappy fit in to Drake May getting a lot of snaps and practice to prepare and also of Jacob's playing him to get snaps to play and even if he's not playing and he's goingon to be the backup to Drake May he's still going to need snaps to be the backup so I think it would be hard I think it's gonna be hard for them to find snaps to give to zappy which if they can't I hope I hope he's able to go elsewhere and try to fight for a role on a team um and not have to stick around and just know you probably won't have a role yeah I mean we see it year in and year out by the time December rolls around every you know this half the league is three deep at quarterback Cleveland was five deep so there'll be opportunities Dev last thing I be irresponsible what's the grade for this draft oh I don't know no one likes a great I gave a be plus you know why I'll tell you why you can think about this why I tell you why because they should have traded down they should have taken JJ McCarthy at 11 they should have taken xavio get at 23 they should have traded back with the other first round pick that they got from Minnesota create a back and gotten an offensive tackle and then still at 34 you can still take Jaylen pulk so that was my solution to everything trade back take JJ McCarthy you know why because J.J McCarthy is a better quarterback now than Drake May and he's going to be a better quarterback in 2024 so your your whole your whole thing is you think JJ McCarthy's better than Drake may he is at the moment because he's fundamentally better he reads defenses better he's a hell of a lot more accurate and he's faster and his arm is pretty close to just as good as Drake ma people are under the impression he doesn't throw it so my hard my the hard thing for me is I watched a good amount of College film watching Corners oh yeah you did reading the in College is very is not it has nothing to do with the NFL especially when you have the time that he did I mean it was eat a sandwich so when you hear people talk about CJ strad and I was like oh re and then you hear people who are honest and they say Houston had no idea he was gonna be able to do that he says you watch this College film you don't you don't really get to see him process one two three he never had to do it they said so like you didn't really know if that was going to be the case if he was going to be able to do it so to me if you feel like JJ McCarthy is the better quarterback now because to me if you're the better quarterback now you have a chance to always be the better quarterback work ethic tools if you have the arm strength like you don't have the arm strength of different things like that then that's one thing but JJ McCarthy can throw on the Run he he's versatile he could do different things he just didn't he didn't have to do it in college which scared me most of all CU I'm like well all then how do we know that you can do it like that that that to me was my fear of like all right in a some of the biggest games against Ohio State you threw the ball eight times it's like how like how do I know for sure so if that's how you felt like hey JJ mccar then that to me makes sense all right then I just I think that's a better kind of evaluation rather than like well these guys aren't going to be this good because this guy is like I think but if you're saying hey they could have traded back because Legette Legette looks looks pretty legit looks like a a freak of nature out there um and then I think a chance that would have got them a tackle earlier maybe gives you a better Prospect yeah but but again I don't think they screwed up yes what I like you still get Drake mck what I liked about the Drake May was it's this new Beacon of Hope for this team like you finally like you have a guy in here after just two to three years of just like Brady left and it was just like what like what are we going to do and Matt comes in and you have one year 2021 where it's like we're set we found the guy we're going to be good and then the next two years are like two of the worst years for Patriots fans that they can remember other than the people who were you know schaer stadium and things like that the world was ending watching the Patriots the last two years for for a lot of the fans so I think you get Drake May who you have to believe that he has a a ton of upside and I think because everyone keeps talking about I thought bill did a great job on McAfee show draft night of hey gu's a good player he hasn't played a lot of football like I thought it was so authentic because like that that was a team meeting everything he said was when young guys coming he's like this this guy hasn't played a lot of football so I mean his footwork is terrible but I think like he said all right this guy Compares himself to Josh Allen and I don't see that but if if we're being honest when we first played against Josh Allen it was this guy he's doing what he did in college bad decision running there's nowhere to run but he's running he just thinks he can throw and force the ball everywhere so like there's some similarities maybe not the footwork or but to me there's some rawness about both of these guys that people are saying but then people are also saying they have some Elite Talent they can do some things so that's what I liked about the Drake May um I thought Buffalo did a great job of they continue to build around Josh Allen right it was the John Brown and Cole Beasley years then next you know step like they continue to say hey this guy is get he's getting better let's make sure we keep up with him getting better so I think that's going to be the key for New England um the the rest of the guys are yet to be seen right I like the pulk I think they got a leader he has to go play well right he has to develop and be a good football player for him not just a leader I think sometimes we talk about guys being leaders and Leadership to me is what what Bill used to tell us his attitude and performance have the right attitude the right energy show up every day but you have to perform right you get like when we say leader I think sometimes oh it's good they just got a leader no no no our leader has to be a good football player too like we need that we need him to lead in that category so I think he has to be that um and I think they need they need some of these guys to kind of be better than you anticipated I think that'll be a big part of Jem Bell can be a tight end that can be a little bit better and and Baker can you know perform Miracles like Jesus and and take guys who couldn't walk and couldn't stand and pull them out of their wheelchair then you're hitting but they that they need that they they can't have in four years Drake May and maybe one other guy from this draft yeah that's what they can't have you can't be ambivalent on how well Drake May did Dev kept you way longer than anticipated that's because you just always happens we have a good time man we do the kids have a good time hey congratulations on the new house appreciate it you too thanks buddy um I'm going to go downstairs and putting a golf simulator in the garage you have a golf simulator now so now you you can't be trash at golf that's the problem you can't be bad and have a golf simulator in your garage and that's the funny thing about that is if you are bad you should have a golf stimulator so you don't keep being bad but if you're bad and you have a golf simulator people like you suck why do you have a golf simulator you have a like the Patriots upgrading their facility like you have a nice facility you can't keep you can't keep being a terrible team can't be 413 again you know so yeah well I mean I mean the facility might be debatable at this point but you want to be able to go back in you want to be able to go sit next to the owner at the No No they're they're improving it they're they're improving some things they're improving some hard at work uh Celtics GNA take care of business how far are they going finals they should win it all this year this is the year they should win it all you concerned about stsy did you see that he hurt his uh calf yeah that's a little concerned um but it look like it was more of an ankle than a calf so uh hopefully turn the ankle a little bit rest it should get some good rest don't play I kind of wanted him he started limping like two minutes before I'm like get out saw get out get out yeah and then the hand went out like oh no that that that'll be a tough break if he he can't go because Al played 30 something minutes not ideal I feel Al we've all played as we were older it's hard to do that day in and day out no it's not not for me yeah you're playing at their oh should we go into it the one of the times I was in Boston I'm at a bar and the guy comes in he's like you're you're really cool with Tom K right man he's a stud in basketball and right then and there I understood the league that you playing had a lot of exactly ask ask Phil about it sometime you'll be dying laughing he showed up for noon time pickup he'll tell you all about it um all right buddy thank you so much no problem man good to talk to you you too la [Music]
