How Steph Curry, LeBron James and Joel Embiid Fueled a Team USA Win for the Ages

going to look ahead to the gold medal match in a bit but let's start with Team USA swiper we were waiting for Steph Curry and jool and beid to have their Olympic moments and they did Steph had 36 points and be played his best two-way game I think of the Olympics had 19 points in the game including seven in a row in the fourth quarter and when push came to shove Steve Kerr went with Steph Devin Booker LeBron Kevin Durant and Joel embiid to close the game so for all the talk about fit and playing Derek white and Drew holiday over Jason Tatum and and Halbert and where these guys fit in and is embid the right guy to play with the starting five and all these things all of that just went right out the window when the when the US needed it in the end they just went with their best five guys and that's who brought them back so that's my take what stood out to you at the end of this one was there one particular player that you want to start with yeah I mean Steph I think started off like Steph Curry five or six from three and uh Serbia was marching on and they looked like they were about to have like a 20 lead at one point going into the half and Steph Curry just chose the day of days where I am not going to let that happen and even when they got down a lot Steph Curry his momentum that he just brought to the court man he was exceptional today Steph Curry 12 of 19 nine of 14 from three today for 36 points and he also had eight rebounds in this game Steph Curry was everywhere and I think him coupled with embiid's shot making his pull-up jump shooting being the the thing in the fourth quarter both of those players you know they really helped Team USA to be able to secure this Victory today but not to be outgunned LeBron James 16 points 12 rebounds and 10 assists a triple double in a clutch game and on top of that West one of the things that is most underappreciated about LeBron James that no matter the age no matter the situation he will defend his tail off if he has the opportunity to do so LeBron James guarded nikol yic yep most people's best player in the world down the stretch of the game once joic got that fourth foul and he took it to him and didn't give him any easy openings at all and so it was just an exceptional close to the game for Team USA now Team USA obviously it's the far superior team uh one through 11 they have nothing but Allstars all NBA players MVP candidates and MVP winners and then Derek white who one of the best role players in the league so you they expected to win this game but Serbia made it as difficult as possible and really truly shout out to Bogie for an exceptional game as well shout out to Alka they were shooting the lights out today and that ended up being the difference in why this game was so close down yeah and it speaks just just the overall talent that that Team USA has and that Steve cerr has to decide between and I just again I go back to this point of Steve Kerr has been lame basted over and over again about his rotation decisions and it's just an impossible play it literally is impossible situation for Steve cerr right because whoever he plays it means he's not playing somebody else there's just too many good guys on this roster not everybody's going to be able to play you even have Draymond Green in the middle of this game tweeting hey it's time to scrap the rotations about his own head coach and all these things and I guess they did scrap the rotations but they just went with the best five guys and and that's the part that just stuck out to me is when nikic was Unreal I mean this was game five Joker stuff that he was doing he gets into foul trouble late it doesn't even stop him in terms of his level of aggression and I actually thought like at the end of this game Serbia had this weird advantage of well we know what we're going to do we're going to give it to joic and he's just going to pass and do everything like we know that that's the head of the snake and that's where everything we do starts and ends with Joker and for Team USA I thought there was Pockets there where they didn't really know what to do they're like all right is it we know it's kind of LeBron's team but he wants to get everybody else involved but Steph's got 30 plus points and we got to we got to feed the hot hand and Kevin Durant's here and he's sort of the zone Buster and what are we going to do with him and meanwhile here's Joel embid playing the best game of his summer and he ends up scoring seven points in a row in the fourth quarter and so I it it took a while but I thought Team USA eventually sort of settled in and when they really got going it was in the open court at the end with LeBron getting that big Rebound in that transition layup Stef a transition layup uh Lebron with another transition layup to go up n uh 91 to 86 at the end of this one it just felt like everything felt pretty disjointed in this game and then when you really needed it to come together it did come together and that's why I think it felt so sort of miraculous at the end you know what I mean yeah you know the the tough thing is FBA joic got his fourth Nikola Jokic foul uh trying to get around the screen on Anthony Davis on Kevin Durant made three and that honestly for me West changed the game because jic if you watch him at all over the course of his career especially at his Apex you know what he's been the last four years if he gets a fifth foul and NBA circuit or a four foul FBA oh he's not going to be able to play with the same level of defensive aggression and I think Wes that was the biggest difference the first three quarters joic was like all over the place defensively he got a block on LeBron James at The Rim got down on the other court and got an and one over Deon Booker and I think maybe bam and the only thing about Joker is his jump shot has completely gone away and had he hit a couple of those threes today you know then the the situation could have been different uh for this game but you know I think for me watching this game there were so many opportunities that Serbia had to close it and you know Gish on the bench man he was playing like super well for a while milov had some really good rebounds in this game uh mistic three of 10 from the field but two of seven from three hit some really big shots today and then like I said bogie eight of 18 from the field 20 points for bogie they they had enough but when you're playing versus a team that is as talented as the US is you have to be able to bring it like in Key moments and they only had one moment where they Wan today and that was the end of the fourth quarter and then LeBron James gets the ball and transition and just absolutely Pummel through everyone Steph Curry gets a steal ends up becoming a lay on the other end they go up five but the really the moment of the game you know Kevin Durant about 32 seconds left he gets a pullup jump shot that he hadn't really hit today over one of the Serbian Defenders and that puts him back up four and changes kind of the Outlook of the game so again a few things go differently today Serbia could have walked away here with the dub but it's just for me it's really difficult to imagine a team that has a three-time MVP but playing versus a team that talented and again once they locked in that again that that for me speaks to like LeBron's 39 years old west and everybody still looks at him as he is like the leader he is the Apex he's our engine LeBron walks away with a triple double Steph walks away with a 30-point game and then Kevin Durant with the closing shot these are the three best players of their generation and they're still leading still leading away for Team USA in 2024 so honestly this was an incredible basketball game I just had a feeling this could be special and once Serbia got up you know they were 12 up 11 up 13 up 14 points it felt like they had opportunities to close but maintaining that kind of a lead is really difficult man but shout out to Team USA uh Jason Tatum no time would he have been your odd man out him and hlee this game yeah I mean they've been right and so it's sort of been part and part for what Steve Cur has done here and and like you know it gets it gets harder to play more guys you know you saw on Twitter like people at halim saying Jason Tatum needs to play I even tweeted like halberton probably might need to play in the second half just to create some transition play because I thought that's where the US was at their best was in the full court and no he just Steve Kerr Eric spoler Ty Lou that whole like they they doubled down on let's just play our guys that we've been playing the whole time here to go back to LeBron I thought the end of the first half was so important for him cuz he started getting going against bogie a little bit bogdanovich there they had that little back and forth he gives him the two small and he kind of gets amped up he goes from sort of facilitator mode to do it all mode uh kind of ramps it up defensively I thought that was the kind of moment that unlocked him I thought jool and beid the start for him the start for him and Steph Curry were really big and then like you mentioned Kevin Durant later on and that six-point possession to start the fourth quarter where Kevin Durant you mentioned the foul joic uh pummeling through Anthony Davis Anthony Davis basically falls into Kevin Durant Durant gets the the three-pointer to fall then the Team USA gets the ball back Deon Booker hits a three-pointer that's a six-point possession in about and and so you're scoring six points in like 10 seconds there that really was a huge swing moment in this game so um yeah I just things did break right for Team USA and and to your point earlier just to put a stat to it nikic 0 for six from three-point range in this game but overall Serbia shot 15 of 39 from three so 39% overall USA shot 50% on their threes I know which is just crazy but Serbia I think weren't they shooting like 60% from three-point range after the first quarter it was crazy how how many threes did USA make today they made 16 of 32 so that means 15 of 39 that means USA I think in the three game versus Serbia have made 47 three-pointers that's crazy so again that was the difference like they had to have it and they got it done it's a difference and then plus those layups that we were talking about too when when they really needed them so uh huge win for Team USA um they're going to be playing France in the gold medal round France beat Germany to advance to that gold medal only ones that count France beat Germany this morning France's intensity is what stuck out to me oh my gosh Victor web and Yama at the end of that game on the brink of tears I have never seen seen I don't know I since LeBron winning it in 2016 for Cleveland I don't know that I've seen a player that emotional Victor wanyama really cares this French team really cares yabas celi just going crazy every single moment he had before he ends up fouling out at the end of this game and for good reason uh France becomes the first host country since 1996 to medal in Olympic basketball wow and we know how important uh Victor wy's Heritage is to him we know how low it's been for France in sort of feeble and in World stage basketball over the last few years web inyama in some respects is kind of the savior of this team but man it is not all web inyama on this team a lot of guys are stepping up and to me the thing that sticks that stands out to me about France the most swiper is they stunk in the exhibitions they did and they weren't that good in the group stage and they make the big switch of moving Rudy go and Evan fornier to the bench they go fit over talent and this team just takes off and now they're playing for a potential gold medal and they're going to get they're going to medal again for the first time the host country medling in basketball since 1996 yeah yeah uh first off uh laort and I think yabui yeah like both of them unal this whole run they have been Dynamite rebounders dynamite in the paint and they fight like heck and so they have really made such a big difference my big takeaway from France has been look you know Rudy goar you know he got the reportedly got the finger surgery he hasn't been playing a lot at all the last two games and some of that is just look you know it doesn't really make sense you know we need somebody that's a little bit smaller scrappier on the boards and Victor wanyama he's just a better player you know we just want to have a him out there by himself give him some spacing and Victor didn't even like have a crazy game today I mean you know he had four of 17 from the field for Victor wanyama and then he was one of eight from the three-point line so a jump shot was non-existent very similar to Nica yic today but his gravity was really important for that team uh they just have like a lot of players that kind of buy into their role and know what they're supposed to do but there's also something too when you're watching that game live them having the crowd with them at all times is such an advantage in all these games could as soon as they get a sliver of momentum or as soon as they need a little push from the crowd they going crazy and I think for them to be in Paris France and for the fans to get to experience an Olympic run and to see them see them have their most talented team maybe ever and for them to push to this degree I just think this is such a big moment for them I think that the USA France game is going to be amazing you know I do think USA can blow them out I just think the matchups are just going to be there for them but look they're going to fight the problem is is that the things that they excel at the bruising they do inside you can't necessarily do that versus the USA and on top of that the bigs they do have bruising they're not like the most skilled players of all time so Anthony Davis embiid bamama [ __ ] this is why you're here you know we need you to make a moment and make this important to get all the rebounds and not let them clean up on the offensive glass and then Steph Curry LeBron James Kevin Durant hey take us home so the USA's path to Gold has been a little bit more difficult uh than I thought that than people thought it would be but France man they have just shown a level of camaraderie and buay in as a team that has been really important and Evan Fier you know it's so funny to see players like Patty Mills forier and others where they're like going to this stage in the league they're high level role players in the league they're like six seventh men on your roster but now like they're at the very front of it and the level of passion and aggression that evans's been playing with and he's been yapping yapping a lot to the crowd and I love to see that energy and he works really well I think with Victor minyama so they have a really really special team so I'm excited to see how things go from there yeah we don't have to do this segment but if I'm the Spurs sign one of these guys right just bring them bring them over just see what happens like bring bring yaselli bring cordier like that cordier guy is he was like a second round pick in 2016 I was looking him up his his draft rights were owned by like Atlanta and then Brooklyn and I think he now he's just an unrestricted free agent I'm like that guy had 16 points in this one six of 13 shooting seven rebounds plays with real fire real intensity yabas Celli is a former first round pick and I remember liking him when the Celtics took him with like the 16th pick or something like that a few years ago and he's really developed he's gotten in better shape uh he's a better Defender than he was and that three-point shot is really come along like I don't know you try not to make too much out of FEA World Cup stuff BEC and Olympic basketball because you never really know how it's going to translate to the NBA Team USA vs France but I've SE like somebody give this guy a chance cuz I'm not ready for ubisi to be out of my life I need to see more of him I can't wait like every couple years for like feba and Olympic basketball to watch that guy play basketball because it's an absolute Joy but your point about the home court is such a good one and what let's just kind of get over to this Team USA France matchup here that's going to be a big that's going to be a big thing I think in this matchup is yeah is is the the homecourt advantage at team that that France has but Bally versus the US well it feels like Team USA would you say that they have the second best home court advantage so far because that crowd got going towards the end of that now I don't it's hard to part like was that just because it was an exciting game that they were kind of getting into it or was there just a lot of like I don't know about USA fans but like Steph fans LeBron fans Kevin Durant fans all you know yeah exactly there's G to be a lot of people rooting for those fans West don't s that oh hell yeah let's go they I think yish should been getting MVP chance so I I do hear a lot of player fans that have been in the crowds but again hey if I'm in France and then my I've been watching LeBron James since 2003 and I haven't seen him play in the Olympics since 2012 and then you get Steph Curry for the first time you got KD here oh yeah I'll be the same way like I's go like I'm trying to see this match up but as soon as they come play France man I that's what I'm saying it's gonna be such a treat for the fans you get the biggest basketball stars on the planet playing against your home country in your home country with gold on the line that's going to be great and especially with the natural relationship that the US has with France as a whole I just think there's just so much to this game there's so many layers to how important this could end up being and I'm really excited to see how wiim Bama responds you know let's talk about that he doesn't have like he's still learning but I I've seen Victor whama get mad and then go off for like 17 points in the third quarter uh I.E the the Nuggets game that they lost that cost them one seed so maybe this is the game maybe this is the one where Victor's like look I don't feel like losing today at home and then EV for is out here hitting five or six threes in the second half could be it France plays with a fire that Team USA just doesn't really play with right outside of maybe LeBron and Steph like nobody else is really following that are you surprised with how LeBron's played by the way I'm done being surprised by anything LeBron does honestly like I really am no I'm not I'm not a I'm actually not because the whole like setting the table for everybody else thing that to me makes sense he's the yic of Team USA right like that's he just sort of is in the middle of everything um the web inyama thing is going to be really interesting though because he's had two like kind of quiet games defensively he's been really good offensively not so not so much like maybe the worst case scenario for Team USA is it feels like he's almost due for a big Breakout game offensively here um Germany had some success going right at him though defensively like Dennis shuder fron Vagner Mo Vagner like just going right at him going into his chest and if those guys are doing it you know Anthony Edwards can do it you know LeBron you know Jolan beid you know Anthony Davis like those guys are just gonna go Wes by the way are you playing Anthony Edwards have you been watching hit the last couple games oh you're just benching him well I I mean I'm saying like he was he was not I mean respect you know if it's he or his family listens like he wasn't good he's not been good enough offensively not hitting open shots defensively he was losing bogy off of screens today yeah backside he wasn't like staying with his man he really wasn't offering like a whole lot and I so that's why I'm like you know if you're in to shorten your rotation I might even go shorten to nine like yeah because at this point it's just like if if this is what it's gonna take like if if it's gonna get even harder than the Serbia game okay well we need the most like intelligent team oriented style basketball possible and as so young he just might not know and if Tatum is going to be sitting on the bench and Hy well then I'm rather roll with Drew Derek white bam and anth an Davis and Devin book and and those four Off the Bench and then let Devin Booker and LeBron and AD and and and Steph Curry and ktie and I embiid just go to work and I'm excited because you know embiid has made mince meet of a Victor wh minyama in the NBA but oh so by the way if you're France are you playing Rudy and wimy again versus this team no no wow wow you need offense you need to be able to score with Team USA you know what I mean like you can't rely on Team USA missing a bunch of two points the way they did against like the beginning of Serbia so right no you you do what you got you here right like they were bad when they were playing goar and wanyama together you got to you got to stick with like sort of the wide open feel and the and like that FEA style basketball that is the thing that Team USA struggles with and Germany is not a small team right it's not like France played Australia Today right like they played a big physical team and and ultimately their style one out there but one more thing I want to hit on that like sort of Youth versus The Experience LeBron games and that whole thing uh and I have like one little comparison note between this team and sort of the redeemed and the Dream Team um from 1992 so we'll talk going into these Olympics swipe was how do the young guys go with the that older group how do like is it is it still LeBron Steph and KD or is it time for them to almost like hand the Baton off to Jason Tatum Anthony Edwards Devin Booker and that whole group and that has not happened no and I think the thing that you know people forget about sometimes with the dream team was that was still magic and Larry That was supposed to be magic and Larry Bird's team right and and Michael Jordan just sort of came and like no it's actually my team now like it's not it's not you it's not it's the and he became the face of of American basketball pretty much in that moment if he wasn't already basically but that has not happened even a little bit here and it was really cool and it's going to be really cool in this gold medal match to just see LeBron and Steph two guys who we have not seen go very long in the playoffs since in a couple years now play like a big high stakes game to get on the same team nonetheless but like they're still very much here and I don't know that you have to surround them with the best 15 players in the world all the time but uh it's cool to see them at this stage and still at this level look I think it says something you know everybody always talks about you know best player here best player there you know Tatum first team allbas this this this and that I'm like yo what when it's money time your best players are one on the court in the fourth quarter I'm sorry like LeBron is just that dude he's gonna if they win the if they win he's going to get player of player of the Olympics like he's going to get MVP at 39 years old like unreal LeBron James I think in a 16 game sample size in the playoffs Wes I'll be willing to bet he could still be a top three to four player top five at minimum through a run definitely through a run If he if he has to focus he can play both ends he doesn't have to do everything at all times and then like you saw LeBron today LeBron had enough energy to play defense when it mattered most he had enough energy to pass to playmake to hit shots like if you like Kevin Durant LeBron and and Steph Curry maybe not Steph guarantee but I still think s Durant and LeBron are top seven eight players in the world and you're seeing them right now you got your five International you got your yis Luca yanis embiid and SGA and then outside of that America's clearly saying our best player is a 39 year old despite the fact that all the youngans they got all the accolades and stuff now people always talking about them and hyping them up and for LeBron to come into this arena for Steph to come into this Arena to be in this kind of a high stakes game and there's no Tatum ants nowhere to be seen and B clearly a role player on this roster he's playing really good at that level it's hey we need the three best players of a generation to lead the way and so I'm really excited to see how they respond and we're getting Gray beard LeBron you know what I mean to have to respond this way and to be in a gold medal match and you get to see LeBron potentially hand the keys off to Victor wiama you know for the next 15 years or whatever else so I really think this is going to be a special game to your point to to quote Kendrick Lamar sometimes it's not that complicated you just give the ball to the guy you just give the ball to the guy when you need a bucket you just give the ball to the guy and that guy has been LeBron and I've been with you on this for a long like he when LeBron wants to be he's still one of the best five players in the world and here's the thing I I'm so glad you mentioned the beard he's letting that get more gray right the die is not I don't know if it's just not available in Paris whatever let he's letting it out and I love it and it is so crazy to watch him play at this level and still be the face of basketball while the guy who is in his draft class Dwayne Wade is on broadcast and melow understands and Carmelo Anthony sitting Courtside and I could not help but think that I'm like everyone I get I get bored of hearing like LeBron is 39 I'm like really he's still 39 and he's going to be 40 and then we're going to hear it again and I'm like okay yeah okay whatever but it really does sort of put it into context when you're watching these guys like Dwayne Wade has and been done having hosted a game show LeBron is still doing it at this level so it's pretty crazy and it's going to be amazing to watch uh HIM lead Team USA against France this weekend all right it's Friday which means it's time to countdown to the weekend system player I am a system The Weekend System Player [Music] player power ranking [Music] and Swiper there are two teams standing at the end here it's been a heck of a Olympic run some really great Classic basketball games one of the most fun I think Olympic runs that we've had in a really long time and that that I can frankly remember um so I'm going to have I'm going to countd down to the weekend with the players that I'm going to miss the most from Olympic basketball from this Olympic basketball run so this is not going to include any Team USA and no French play players because they're still what about so miss even so FR so Germany and and Serbia are playing on Saturday too so are we not counting them as well uh that's a great point and I had not thought about it before I made the list so no we're still counting German although that is the right way to do this and I'm GNA go ahead and do it the wrong way but number five is niik yic uh he's only number five because it's the most unimaginative name on this list and because we get to see him play at the NBA basically the same way which is kind of the craziest thing about yic is he does play FEA basketball and Olympic basketball the same way he plays like NBA basketball and you don't usually see that translate but he's just such a system unto himself that right um you know it doesn't matter so it's always fun to watch him though in both in both and by the way niika yic in the Olympics seems to care a lot more than Nika yic for the Denver Nuggets just in terms of like the showing and the emotion and all that stuff and and that's always fun yeah getting a getting a medal for your country especially know bronze at this point I mean that would be huge number four Patty Mills okay Olympic Patty Mills is Patty Mills a Hall of Famer Basketball Hall of Famer yeah I would have to look at his entire basketball resume but it's possible he did his jerseys re his numbers retired at St Mary's he has he's one of the the biggest score the greatest scores ever in Olympic basketball he's the number one guy for Australia I don't know I he's met several times I don't know it's it's sort of interesting to think of Patty Mills as a Basketball Hall of Fame how many rings does he have uh well he's got two with San Antonio two of San Antonio yeah I'm pretty sure and one of the best scorers ever in world history at the Olympic level yeah I mean probably honestly I mean he's probably gonna end up being a Basketball Hall of Famer just on the fact that his International career is so crazy so I honestly would not be surprised at all and I would even argue that he probably should make it because of that yeah it feels like he's almost a lock you know uh number three I'm going to do my best here Alexa aranovich yeah he was he's been playing yeah didn't really know who he was until basically like last summer at the fee World Cup and then he really broke out I felt like in these Olympics and he's just awesome and my favorite moment was him dapping up Steph Curry in the first half when they were both going crazy so Steph made like scored 15 of Team USA's first 16 points or whatever it was couldn't miss any threes but on the other side for Serbia aranovich was just hitting everything too and there was a moment where they were both walking up the court kind of in a break and he just like went up the step and tries to DAP him up and Steph's like what are we really going to do this and like Steph's like all right I'll guess I'll dap you back up even though he would have never done that in an NBA game but also he never would have been asked for that in the middle of an NBA game but I like aranovich just being like the two of us who would have thought that's dope yeah I'm playing against maybe my favorite point guard ever in on a high Stak game like this yeah absolutely and we're going bar for bar each other yeah hey good shot Steph
