Kentucky football's offense looking good with 25 days until season starts

need a balance Steen all right I'm good got got it okay questions for coach for the pads on you see the physicality you want to see from your group I think so obviously there's always uh Room to Grow but but these guys have had a physical camp on both sides of the ball certainly it starts up front uh but really doing a nice job you know taking the next step each day been so much to talk about how you guys can use Gavin in different ways what's your experience with playing two quarterbacks at the same time can you get them both on the field and in certain formations that kind of stuff I think so you know I think again I you're were able to see during during that last practice uh some of the things he's able to do uh we think he's one of the best ball carriers we have as well so it's it's on us to be creative um you know making sure it's it's a package he can handle but he can also handle going in and being the full-time quarterback if needed there and and it's something we're working on with with with such a couple of conference games so early in the schedule does that change any way the way you approach Camp that's a great question I I think it does it absolutely does I think for us um not as much of how we approach it with our players but certainly from a staff standpoint staying ahead um of our self Scouts and uh we would like to you know by the end of the summer put away uh some of those game plan thoughts for week two week three so we can quickly get back to them and certainly have a lot of those game plans in so we can be practicing some of those things towards the end of Camp what the rule change letting analysts and all the quality people coach on on the field does that help you install now I know you brought some guys with you who are more familiar with DS how much what ises the difference does that make yeah I I think it's huge you know I've been super blessed we uh you know we got a guy by the name of Derek Shay who was the tight ends coach at Marshall last year he's a guy that's could easily be a position coach in the SEC and all those things and and Taylor KY is a guy we brought and um Andrew verbo and Drake I mean there there's four or five guys there that that are guys that could be position coaches at other places so so we feel blessed we're adding these guys um and we're able to have them coaching we're able to have them out there uh give more one-on-one if you will with positions and that's been a plus Fred faer is a guy who made a bunch of plays when we were out here Saturday and I know he played well in the spring but is he a guy that surprised you a little bit just since you've got him here you know I don't know if surprise is the right word I just think it's so interesting for so many of these guys as you know it's it's the football part of it and it's that consistency over intensity day in and day out Fred's one of those guys that I'm not necessarily mentioning in the media every day and and I think for him uh he's been able to just put his head down and go to work for 3 four months and I think he of all the guys on this offensive roster is a guy that that we have uh been tremendously proud of for those reasons his situation might not be exactly what he wants it to be right now but he's working like he's the number one guy and as you know you got to be ready when your number's called which there's a lot of talk about the helmet con but the tablets what can that help you with on game day and maybe work with your experience working with those when you're in the NFL yeah I I think it can be certainly um certainly a huge plus um but we got to be efficient with it you know sometimes as you guys know in between drives there's only uh sometimes four five 6 minutes and so can't necessarily be on those tablets taking forever the communication's got to be in sync uh we're putting a plan together whether that what needs to be known right now and what what can maybe wait uh for another driver to and so we're going to definitely use that on Saturday uh try to get a good trial run if you will for that so we can be ready for game one when you were in the NFL were were tablets allowed then or did they come in after you they were now we could only get the pictures so a lot of times for for the quarterbacks you know you'd have that time to sit with them and just show some of the views but uh you know I think the video is going to be a game changer in a lot of ways but again as you know it's how how can we communicate in a way where it's simple clear and concise and uh those we we all know what the tablets do to our personal lives so hopefully it doesn't distract us like that so Jason Patterson was a guy that kind of he's a big name in the spring how how have you seen him progress I think he's in that same old of Fred frier you know he's kind of one of those guys that's been quiet continually working I think I remember in uh in July he used to be in my office he would have his pads on just getting catches on these jugs machines here at about 6:00 at night and so that's a guy he doesn't say a whole lot um again I've said said this we always know what those upper classman guys are the guys that we do a lot of media coverage with but it's those younger guys who can step in and know what they're doing with a little bit less experience that are going to be game changers for us anybody else Anderson is the guy that we've heard pretty great things about so far this off season how's he looking through practice and what's the path of him getting on the field on Saturdays just consistency I mean he's certainly one of those guys he's got all the ability in the world he's got size he's got athleticism uh certainly at that position you know it's going to take consistent brand of ball play in and play out but he's a guy we're looking to really get going this year anyone else all right thank you right appreci what does Kamari bring from a skill Talent perspective to the to to the tight end position he brings both because he can line up as a wi tight end like Bates did but he's a more twitcher athletic guy uh you remember the play he made against Louisville that I remember when they threw the ball to him I say oh okay we got somebody for next year so I think uh Kamari brings more athleticism he 6'5 he can run he he actually he actually catches like a receiver his skill set is like a receiver but he's a big kid coming from c tech that program always got tough kids so uh I'm I'm very excited about Kamari and so far with the pads on obviously the different you've seen the physicality you want from that tight end group oh yeah yeah the other guy I've been impressed with is Willie Rodriguez yeah I mean you know you know what I'm going get you know if you already been in my room they know what the expectations are willly kind of find out the first day but Willie is a guy that really kind of remind me of how catus came in here so uh the physicality they know they not going to play if they not physical in my room so that's the last question uh I mean the last thing I'm worried about with them guys and for Willie is a plan to play him this year's true freshman yeah yeah yeah yeah he's a now I I got in this I almost cussed I got in this tail yesterday cuz you know he he was feeling himself you know he's doing good we was praising and then he had a bad practice I thought yesterday then he came back out the day and and redeemed himself so I told him I said hey when you're a freshman that's why freshman red shirt because you inconsistent I need you to be consistent every day and I mean you seen how physical he looks he looks like a guy that's ready to play right now so I'm very excited about him and abis guy you recruited he was running with the twos already what what have you all seen from him to this point when when I recruited him and you know you cover recruiting he was a guy that everybody could a lot of people covered it he could play center he can play some people recruit him as a tackle he can play guard he's very athletic uh wolf really loves him I think he he going to be one of them guards that we had here that's going to be a big time guy for the next years to come all right thank you Vince nice man all right so just how's it how was it getting the pads on and getting the hit for the first like you know you're hitting but like it's different with the pads on how was that oh it's good you you never get used to that feeling so just getting back to that it's amazing yeah what is I know you got a little of a playing experience last year what is the one thing or a couple things you're trying to work on heading in your sophomore season uh definitely my physicality in the Run game just being intentional every snap um getting with the older guys after practices working on stuff and just watching the older guys in front of me just learning from them how important is that for your for the tight ends groups in general just to have that physicality and really make a factor kind of in the Run game definitely here but I would say in the SEC in general you need those physical tight ends that can also do stuff in the pass game so I would say it's really important yeah I've saw you seen splitting out wide um kind of in practice in some different personel groupings what can you bring to the offense as a pass catcher you think uh just explosive plays uh I'm when I catch the ball I'm looking to score so just exposive plays I would say and I can get open yes sir okay um and how how important do you feel like the tight ends are in this offense uh B sham and toas we're going to try to get you all the ball do you feel like you're all going to be like real important part of the offense yes sir really important we're a 12 Personnel heavy uh offense so like almost a main part of offense yeah so we can expect to see a lot of two tied in sets throughout the year yes sir I hope so yes sir thank you Mar yes sir nice me man how you doing how's it going man nice to meet you how you doing how you doing good all right Jam we talk to uh buch hamon just kind of you know you all worked together at Missouri is it different now that that he's know calling place for you now yeah it's a little different man you know he was my receiver coach so he's teaching me a lot of position stuff but now he's my office coordinator so you know it's a little different but he's still the same person you know so what's good thing what's been the first impression of the kill shorts just kind of getting the work with he Ed us to a high standard that's what I like about him you know what I'm saying he hold us to a standard every single day no matter if it's hot cold whatever it is he owes to the same standard and me being a veteran he owes me to a high standard that's what I need to push me and when you were at Missouri is this offense that bush is running really similar to that you feel like some some of it yeah some of it but he didn't came in and BR his own little stuff into it so it's so he got a lot of different different stuff so I'm excited for it yeah North Texas you kind of made a knack for kind of being a vertical receiver in that offense Mak a lot of plays down the field is that something you think you can bring to this offense and that something you think the coach of staff is going to ask you yes sir I can I can bring whatever it is to the offense I can come out the back field and run routes I can run routes short intermediate and uh deep route so I can do whatever that's why I'm uh so vers versatile yeah speaking of that versatility I know they want to play play in multiple positions but in the slot they tragedy there at all and you think that's going to be a spot you're going to that's easy money that's why that's why I met you know with Dan and barion outside I'm in a slot and I move in and out of the time so I like the slot you know say what is it about the slot that you like uh it's a lot more spacing compared to outside you know what I'm saying it's a lot more DBS are probably five six seven eight yards off where I can make my move a little give me time to think about my move uh during the middle of the route so that's that's the big difference and what's one thing fans can expect from that wide receiver group this year a lot of explosive plays a lot of touchdowns okay most definitely all right and um what like getting to know Brock like what is what is a route or something that you are working on specifically trying to nail down this season I think it's just more so chemistry you know I'm say I miss all theing and a lot ofing with I'm just trying to get the chemistry what he thinking on certain routes and like that so I'm taking the time to do before you know season starts yes thank yes appreciate it Fred is there a certain position that receiver they're working you at or you just trying to uh honestly I'm trying to learn all positions I'm trying to be able to uh get thrown in anywhere and know absolutely what I'm doing uh right now I'm really at outside but I mean I took some inside reps as well too so honestly I'm just learning Concepts learning every position trying to get in where I can mentioned DJ Waller but can you just maybe talk about the whole kind of defensive backs as a whole what have you seen from them I mean we got maxw obviously I mean he's definitely top Corner in my opinion I feel like just really them techniques at corner is just it's hard for a receiver to get open at 100% of the time uh we got JQ as well he kind of like DJ similar really uh longer at the line of scrimmage and be able to get hands on you and stuff like that it's a younger quarterback that I've been going against uh terion as well he's definitely showed some skill and stuff like that making it a little hard at the line of scrimmage and stuff so I feel like quarterback room is definitely very talented this this year indeed Fred what can some of the fans or people going to watch you all this year what can they expect from that wide receiver room excitement touchdowns exposive play that's that's all we preaching right now we we really trying to show everybody in the room can really get on the field and make things happen so really just explosive plays I asked Jamari the same question he said explosive plays too is that a big emphasis for you all this year uh I would say so most definitely I mean everybody wants to be able to have a play down the field score you you know what I'm saying so really I mean me personally like I said I'm harping on exposive players like I want to make down the field plays and big plays for the team and stuff like that when people ask you about Brock what are you talking man I I was texting my friend the other day I I said Brock on point like me me and Brock definitely on good timing and stuff like that I feel like when you come out to cut like the ball right there it's just on perfect timing and stuff so I feel like I like how he approached the game as well like when I'm in with the ones and stuff I like how he directs the offense directs the Motions stuff like that I feel like he's really taking charge of the offense one of the things coach told us is that you come out to work every day like you're number one wide receiver how how do you develop that mind I say honestly uh when I first got here I had a little chip on my shoulder just cuz I feel like people didn't really know I came here and stuff like that and knowing where I came from so uh I mean I came out and I just wanted to work every day I wanted to get myself the best absolute opportunity so that when my opportunity come my preparation is on point and I can show what I've been working on and stuff like that so I mean I spend a lot of time even at home just watching film watching NFL receivers watching college receivers and stuff like that when I'm here making sure my body on point getting treatment drugs stuff like that so I really I do take pride in working hard outside of the mandatory hours some of those receivers that you model your game after study like that uh I say in high school my favorite receiver Justin Jefferson like especially when he's at LSU and stuff like that like I was watching them close uh but honestly uh as I got older I kind of like Jamar Chase like just how aggressive he is and how he kind of allows Defenders to get their hands off him and just how strong he is at the at the catch point being able to get their hands off and stuff like that and I kind of been watching his film really seeing like how to be more aggressive and stuff like that getting my get my hands up and getting their hands off me when I talk about corters like DJ and JQ like being able to just when they redirect me getting their hands off and stuff like that so I say Jamar as well did you watch receivers on Netflix yes I did my favorite uh Tay Adams Tay Adams the so you had a background on both sides of the ball coming up mhm how did that play on the other side side help you kind of to get that appreciation out of DB well I'll say like honestly in high school like we didn't really play Too Many coverages it was kind of cover three and cover four so I was in bail technique the whole time so I can't say like I know too much about the defensive side and defensive structure but I will say like I know what defense do and don't like especially when it comes off the ball and stuff like that so I say it help me a little bit oh my bad also when I was at UAB I play uh I play corner on punt return so I know I kind of know like just what they looking at and what they not looking at cuz I was working with the DB coaches just to work that specific position
