from the City of Brotherly Love and Citizens Bank Park Sunday baseball on the show it's the Pittsburgh Pirates taking on the Philadelphia Phillies with Chris Singleton I'm John shabi and singy we're going to see a nice little win streak put to the test today yeah these guys are really firing on all cylinders right now and to me the important thing is that they're doing the little things well they're not just relying on home runs or big plays every game they're playing good situational baseball executing in key areas and that's how you string together win so we'll see if they continue that in this one so just about set now and today's starting pitcher Zack Wheeler singy he's a guy that can rack up a lot of strikeouts been a very solid pitcher throughout his career ER around three and a half what I like is he competes he stays in the game and he gives his team an opportunity to win Roa calls it in and there's one away here's the second baseman pitch in for a strike going one wheeler he gets a lot of swing and miss and he keeps the ball in the yard not to mention the fact not too many hits either on to First and two away now even some of the best guys in the sport are going to give up home runs from time to time and he's an exception yeah and even with those home runs if you're throwing strikes keeping base runners off the paths then those home runs are Solo shots but to this point he hasn't had to worry about it foul ball it stays nothing in two you look at what the elite pitchers do they strike hitters out they limit walks and they limit the ball going out of the par that just misses and a count one and two yeah all you want is a guy like that take the ball every fifth day go out there hand it over to the bullpen perhaps in the seventh inning or later settles underneath it and that is that and we're back and our pitcher in this game Paul Ste it's a tough veteran lineup on the other side but I'm excited to see what this rookie can do in this one bottom of the first Trey Turner at the [Applause] plate and a foul [Applause] ball next offering is in for a strike man that pitch was dotted so much talent on display when this guy's out there on the hill slave the miss the velocity blasted it right past him Brandon Marsh steps to the plate and that one fouled off one out base is empty ground ball up the middle and it finds its way through for a [Applause] hit one gone runner at first and now the first baseman Bryce Harper just one for 12 in the series coming in that one finds the zone and that is strike one right through there for a strike triple digits on the gun I know there are more pitchers that can reach that now than in theast but still impressive to watch look out way inside so a wild pitch allows the runner to advance one out and a runner at [Applause] second oh that one almost gets him [Applause] again line to left and that's a fair the ball and that rolls into the corner run scores easily and the Phillies strike first it's one nothing and he starts his afternoon on right with a double so now the injury forcing a substitution at second base entering is the pinch Runner edmundo Sosa at the plate Alec bone ripped On A Line to Center and that's a basee hit coming home he'll score easily and they lead by two F curly he was ready to hit right there was on the outside didn't go the other way with it but still a nice job of using the big part of the field to find a hole no way he hits it that well if he hooks around the baseball there this is Bryson stop two homers in the game yesterday so he's feeling good coming in fall off foul [Applause] next pitch is outside he D on the off speed there we talk about the power fast but he's working a little differently here swinging a foul over the screen and back out of play two runs across in the inning you're in the finale of this four game set two two oh right to the back stop into scored position on the wild pitch and there goes the double play [Applause] possibility on the ground to the left Cruz out of first and there are two outs Kyle schwarber comes up to hit here Homer in the ball game yesterday afternoon swings in misses and that strike one I know they've gotten out to an early lead but you don't want to take these opportunities for granted with two outs still with a Quality atat Drive in that you may not have another run in scoring position the rest of this ball [Applause] gameex offering upstairs way to lay off that fast up right there you're looking for something you see well that you can handle but you also have to keep the discipline so that you're not pitches that are just a little too [Applause] high the two two got him good job at damage control right there but two runs for him and they jump ahead we move on to inning number two here in Philadelphia it's the Phillies two and the Pirates nothing now to the ball game on defense edmundo Sosa he takes over as the new first baseman O'Neal Cruz leading things off it takes a [Applause] strike Clips a corner with the breaking ball just got the corner nothing you can really do with that that's offering upstairs it's a good take [Applause] one now Fly ball to Right Center in position puts it away for the out and now it's Andrew McCutchen and first offering is fouled off wheeler the tall righty 195 lb and he was awarded a gold glove in 2023 Feld two out towards right center field RW on the Move two away Brian Del La Cruz the next pirate to hit and there's a strike that's excellent location on the fast right there early in this game if he can do that all game should be a good outing and a good eye there that one back up the middle and it gets through Joey gets on base and keeps it going here's Rowdy tles first pitch and that's in for a [Applause] strike on the ground right side stop they get the force and that is the third bottom half of inning number two here's Nicholas castanos that one to Triple digits no ball one strike po foul out of play off to the right waves at the Bender for the strike out well this guy's been pretty much a nonf factor so far this weekend very little in the way of impactful at bats and quality at bats and let alone contact that's the six time set him down on strikes in the series so no doubt frustrating and very high right now that missed inside one and one swing and a miss and 102 on the radar gun one down base is empty HS and misses it's a strike out backto back strikeouts to start the frame and that's now three in a row yeah he's really settling in and getting a feel for his pitches throwing him where he wants to right now so we'll see how long he can keep this streak going now the throw to first on the run in time got him and welcome back to the ballpark now at the plate Joey Bart that's there that strike one he doesn't get a knock right here that pitch he just took is going to eat at him for a while you might not see another pitch like that from a top level guy like this and it finds it way through for a hit so a man on base to start the inning he was all over that one really nice job staying up the Middle with his approach he didn't try to do too much with the bits just shot it through the infield jack sininsky stands in here takes ball one low High Fly ball down the left field [Applause] line and he gets into the corner but it's foul on the ground could be two over to Turner for one back to First and that is a double play Isaiah coner FFA up to the play I think four 63 double plays like that are way tougher than these guys make it look sometimes because no matter how you do it the feed from the second Bas is a tough one that's where footwork really comes into play but right there very well done Bas hit so a two out Knock keeps the inning alive you know I was watching his rounds during batting practice today so impressed with his ability to let the ball travel go back up the middle in the other way sometimes when you step in the Box during the game you get a little anxious and you get away from that but so far I've seen him stay consistent with his pregame preparation the fills up by two we're here in the top half of inning number three swing and a highfly ball deep left field that Ball's carrying and [Music] gone his first Homer of the year and we're all square it's 2-2 he was able to hit one out in this weather are you kidding me how did he do [Applause] that a good hitter gets pitch recognition early he saw exactly where that was going to be the challenge not get over anxious and come out of your swing he stayed on it and and got all of it two outs nobody on Brian Reynolds here and that's in there for strike [Applause] one and that one missing low one ball one St bases empty two away but two runs are in you're in the finale of this four game set lifted in the air right center field Roos sizes this one up makes the grab and that'll end the inning another look at this two-run Homer for Pittsburgh and we're deadlocked now at two a piece you're dialed into the show set for the bottom of the third here's Turner now the right hter back to work swing and a miss that one at 101 one to third Conor FFA throws across the diamond lead off man retired here in the third now the left fielder Brandon Marsh line drive and there's two down not fo at all right there he was clearly all over it but sometimes you hit it too hard and right at someone you're looking for one of those BL hits to get a knock sometimes the pitch that one pushed foul two outs and that's in the swanging a highfly ball in the air left field Reynolds ranging back and he brings it in on the warning track back at Citizens Bank Park as we go to the top of the fourth now O'Neal Cruz there's a strike Bo I know it's obvious but you just can't miss Cruz when he's on the field I've never seen a player like him I mean he's 6' weighs 220 lb and is the tallest Short Stop in the history of Major League Baseball [Applause] [Music] [Applause] swing and a miss stck him out and there's one down finished him off by blowing it by him up high but they did a really nice job of setting that pitch up the plan of attack early on was to keep everything down around the knees so that was a good call to change his eye level and run it by him for the K there's the strike doesn't seem to like the pitch up off on either one of those pitches two count now I think the guy going to clim the ladder out there looking that's a strike out that was a pretty po bat he just never got the bat off his shoulder I mean you got to go up there looking to swing at some point especially once you're down 02 and at that point make an adjustment look to put the ball in play if it's anywhere close and I'm just not sure what the plan was there that breaking ball is in for a strike and quickly it is nothing in two got him looking and the Pirates go one two three impeccable command in that one three batters three strikeouts that's electric stuff out there back here in Philadelphia here's the third baseman Alec B and that one sliced foul you know these Phils as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate they're chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone and those chases that are turning into a bunch of outs can they turn that around and stay within the Zone we'll see but I think they have to it's never fun going back to the Dugout after hitting the line drive that finds a glove but you will get some high thighs you know when you make great contact you feel like you've done everything right but in this game of baseball not everything is in your control 101 on the gun swing and a miss that one misses one and two the C pretty standard High 02 fast right there if you're smart look for something down in the zone but not too far I want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt some high cheese for strike three stepping in the long ball threat Kyle schwarber and the first offering is not close foul ball there righty to the plate swing and a miss at 100 Mil an hour two down nobody on we're here in the bottom of the Fourth Way High [Applause] left hand batter WS foul ball another two two upcoming two down nobody and another ball wow this guy's really battling up there as if his run is the game-winning run I love his tenacity swing and a ball driven pretty well out towards left Center Reynolds gets under it pulls it down and he makes the catch all set for the start of the inning stepping in Rowdy tles and the first pitch misses for ball one it feels like we might be headed towards a rain delay of the weather doesn't ease up Chris yeah theing crew going to pay attention to how the weather is impacting this game and the moment it becomes dangerous I think is the moment we'll be forced to take a break next off bring is in for a strike s and that's a strike out we're going to take a look at the pitch sequence of that at bad and the thing to notice are the pitch locations every single one of them on the edges of the strike zone and as a hitter that can be pretty frustrating because you don't expect the pitcher to be able to make quality pitches one after another like that and so those are tough SPS a great demonstration of pitch command and it got him a punch out that time that one to First SOS and he handles it himself for the out Jack sininsky the next to hit that's a strike he's controlling things out there on the mound not messing around at all he's been in attack mode since the very start and he's down 02 as he swings through it the pitch got him looking and he didn't like the call and as he turns on the rubber with that good live arm delivers and the first pitch misses for ball one castanos measures 6' 4 in 32 years old and he was selected for the allstar game last year [Applause] now there's a pitch we haven't seen in a while it's going be tough on the hits if he can mix that in whenever he wants to the right side and that one handled tosses to first and that's the first out in the bottom of the fifth JT real mtil steps in and that one fouled [Applause] off he one swings through that man that was pretty gross right there chases that one out of the zone and now to G well that's the money maker right there two strikes slider down and away from a same side thrower as the hitter that's just tall you're looking to protect with two strikes and very difficult to lay off two outs out to short he Dives but can't hang on that's a base hit he decides to hold on to it and he reaches safely Trey Turner with a chance now big knock there to keep the inning alive and an opportunity to put something in the Gap and give the Phillies the lead here's the pitch Runner goes strike in there to second out there and the back here Citizens Bank Park and now Isaiah ker FFA in the air out to Center Roos snags it on the run now the number two hitter that one finds the Zone that's strike one we haven't seen a break in the weather and the umpires might be forced to make a decision soon yeah I think mean everyone looking and wondering when they're going to stop play definitely Chris P and there's a foul ball the wind of the pitch goes down looking Chris thir time through the order and a couple of quick outs for the starter yeah he's been very frugal today economical with the pitch count Reynolds in the Box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike swing in a Miss as he was out front well on the M very efficient able to produce an outcome it seems like within the third or fourth pitch of just about every bat two down dolman down on strikes and it's a three up three ready to go for the last half of the inning and now the short stop Trey Turner and he blows that one by him at 100 one stri swing and a miss at 100 milph line in the pitch that's out to center field swinski PA it in and there's one away here's the left fielder Brandon Marsh fouled off he was late the line of the pitch hard hit left side throw over to tles that's it out well he's doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball good execution s swings through that one as he comes to the play for the second time today it really looks like these hitters have been in between with their timing today good fast excellent slider but they've not out of first out number we go to the top of the seventh at the plate for Pittsburgh O'Neal Cruz that one's in there strike one trying to keep good speed off the bases a little up front there as he swings through ball CAU looking for the K just lipped a page out of the Greg Maddox play throw that pitch at the Hi and just watch it jump back over the inside swing and this one's blasted it's got a chance pulls it in and the warning track to the plate now for Pittsburgh is the DH briyan Del Cruz outside and that's ball one tied up here in the top half of inning number seven on the outside corner and now it's even one and one two outs got him [Applause] swinging bottom of the seven now it's the cleanup hitter for the Phillies Alec B that one triple digits Bullpen action for the Pirates Dennis Santana appears to be getting loose Stratton a hard throwing right hander up as well outside you got to give him credit out there on the mound this outing started off a little shaky but he's found a way to settle in and turned this into a pretty good start kind of shows you a lot about his mental makeup as a pitcher two one and a swinging to miss there man that's just a nasty splitter falls out of it don't see a lot of guys throw that these days but I tell you what he's got a good one swing and a miss struck him out well that right there is just a pitcher pitch tailing away from The Hitter Lo away with some good action at the end you know even if he gets the back to that ball it's probably just a weak ground ball to the opposite side tell you what that's a tremendous two strike pitch that's off the mark and one and one timing issues can snowball quickly and that's what we're witnessing here this lineup's inability to lock on to the pitcher delivery is causing a few awkward swings well he went inside a couple of times and now outside hit's not exactly sure where to look for this next pitch foul ball left side he'll see another kicks and fires ball two faces empty one away here the bottom of the seven and it drops in now he turns and heads for second the throw in in there safely didn't exactly square that one up but sometimes you don't have to that's one of those things where as a hitter you kind of feel like you were du for something like that to drop in for you no matter how good or bad you've been swinging the bat as of and he just off and dropped it in there perfectly now a good opportunity to potentially Jump Ahead in this game here in the later Innings just missed if he's able to connect on that look out man it's second this one in the air center field moving under it makes the grab grounder tags it second and he's up to third SA Le with two longall and now for the Phillies Nick castanos swing and a Fly ball in the air out towards right center field no trouble here puts it away well there's a sign from the crew chief we are officially in a rain delay as they'll put the tarp on the infield and hope this one passes quickly well the goal is to resum play within the hour so that leaves these managers with a bit of a decision will they be able to keep their pitchers in the game or not so we'll have to see on the other side folks swings through it for strike one one lifted in the air right field ctios moves on it makes the catch one down here's Joey Bart now maybe caught that one off the end just a little bit couldn't quite Barrel it up enough to really drive it swinging a ground offall the middle that's a base hit so they get a man aboard with a one out single well that started and ended pretty quickly no messing around right there just kept it simple with the middle of the infield took it back where it came from and there's just no one there to knock it down and a pitch the Bas Runner you got to stay dialed in here look for anything in the dirt try your best to get in scoring position outside got him looking he can't believe it so the lineup flips over Isaiah ker ffo the next pirate to hit the one and that one fouled off two outs and fouled [Applause] off next pitch is outside he fouls it off will do it again with the goahead run at first and we're in the top of the eight next offering upstairs 32 two out run on first lot of movement in the infield hit got to stay focused on the pitch and it's off the bag and no throw for some reason as he reaches first that's got to be an error so first and second with two outs now it's the second baseman and that's outside and that's ball one and downstairs good spot for the definitely has the advantage in this count runners for to be aggressive on this next pitch go ahead run it second here in the finale of this four game set that's St in there for a strike and the count is even two and two and swinging a Miss they miss a big chance to take the lead here late well this guy competes hard we see the back now new pitcher on the M as we roll into the bottom of the eight Dennis Sant has a great slider with tons of movement and here it goes in the air right field McCutchen has it sized up and out number one on the grab here's the center fielder Johan Roos one for two first pitch not close meanwhile activity in the bullpen Jaylen beaks loosening up in case he's called upon by Derek Shelton and that one fouled off all tied up here the bottom half of the eighth inning and that's off the Inside Edge and it's two and one home plate umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit good eye in that spot 31 he couldn't come up with it pretty easy walk right there last pitch wasn't even much to think about here's Tre Turner over three a fly out of ground out a strike out Santana over to First and he's back [Applause] safely run around to goal pitch misses singy he definitely showed off the wheels there yeah and it turned out to be a bang bang play statcast gives us the data and that stolen base wasn't possible without that Sprint speed and it's second Fly ball center field on his way in flashes the leather on the running catch two down nothing instills more confidence in a team that a center fielder who makes a great play like that on the Run they can feed off the energy brings just from his playmaking abilities as a pitcher you know the runner on second is ready to push things with his speed a base hit it's probably going to be a big run so you really have to execute on the M fall off foul two down go ahead run and score in position just misses there good sp there but didn't get the strike at the knees and doesn't seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tried to get a better to the Umpire Strike Zone stays [Applause] alive and now the count is even definitely got the hit conscious of the pitch inside really think the outer half is open on the ground to third boots it but they get the out of first and that'll do it for the inning one left for Philadelphia score remains deadlocked to 22 and Taiwan Walker on the pitch here this is his third time out this year and that one fouled off walk and the righty deals up the middle stop fires to first on the run and they take care of Reynolds for the out here's O'Neal Cruz that play won't be trending on social media later on but it's still important to ex it to Perfection this game is a lot harder than it looks Mar hit hard but foul off to the left and a count one and two one down Bas is empty bounce to the left side oh can't pick it up cleanly and he's going to make it to First and we'll see how they score it here's Andrew McCutchen to hit oh for three with two fly outs and a strike out first pitch misses this is a batter who loves to produce late in ball games he doesn't shy away from the big moment Rio in the dirt and an excellent job keeping it right there next offering in there for a Strike valky balls and a strike he walked in that'll keep the line moving maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there pretty much gifted in first base with a quick free pass the last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground but I wouldn't expect many pitches up in the zone they'll be pitching for a double play in this spot and a foul ball he stays alive two on one out on the ground a second might be two there's one double play and that sends us to the bottom of the well back and here comes the closer David Baugh he's making his fourth appearance of the season and time called at the plate maybe trying to slow things down here in a crucial spot Andy de and fouled [Applause] off the pitch not even close there and the count even one and [Applause] one right side hard hit and they get the lead off man in the nin those plays can be tricky their routine but that doesn't mean it's always going to be smooth he delivered a good play right there Alec bow stands in for the Phillies one for [Applause] three swing in a miss so many hard throwing relievers in the game days you would think that hitters have made the adjustment but I don't know if you ever get used to it just ping gas out of the so hard to play catch up Fair ball McCutchen returns it to the infield as they hold the winning run at second base here's the second basem Bryson [Applause] stop strike one1 the next offering misses and it's ball a [Applause] strike swing and a ball hit out towards left center field Reynolds tracks it down for the out and he moves up to third now two [Applause] away so digging in now for Philadelphia Kyle schwarber got to be careful with this guy he's got power he can untie it with one swing foul back ourway and that's out of [Applause] play this guy's got good power with one swing he can win it for him chase that time two ball one strike swings and misses and the count is two and two and that's outside winning run at third two down in the air out towards Right Center Taylor moving under this one and that's the third out Philly on new pitcher on here Spencer turn swinging a highfly ball out there towards left field and there's one down almost a loud start to the Inning on that first pitch man he's going to want that one back no doubt in the box now take strike [Applause] one swing in a miss two faces empty one away here in the top half of the 10 this one in the air Turner should have it squeezes it two down Michael a tailor the next pirate to hit swings through that one no ball one [Applause] stke finds his way through base hit so now back to the top of the order couldn't have timed it up any better than that just a simple ground ball the other way they had eyes on it man sometimes that's all you need to do just let the ball travel put the ball in play and just hope it finds a hole and now a chance to maybe lift it in the air out to left March drivs towards it and that's the third third down and welcome back to the ballpark on to the bottom of the 10 and digging in for Philadelphia Nick castanos fouled off he was [Applause] late righty delivers swing and a miss looked off balance that time go ball two stri there's a [Applause] ball the onew and a curb misses outside well he might have to look for a different put away pitch right here two two he's already seen the curve ball couple times in this at that so and a swing and a miss and they get the lead off man in the 10 and up to the plate is JT real M 0 for three with two strikeouts and a fly out this one in the air he's under it two up two down and now the center fielder Johan Roos first pitch doesn't find the Zone swing in a miss one one two out bace is [Applause] empty swinging a foul straight back pitch misses the count now two and two [Applause] next offering popped in the air right field McCutchen makes the catch and that'll here's the new pitcher for the Phillies Jose Alvarado number 4 there's a strike 95 at that one F attempt popped up on the Run sends it over to First no hit here on the B they get the out Reynolds in the box now take strike one finds the corner and the count is and two lifted in the air now the left side and they take care of Reynolds for the out and there's two down now it's the short stop O'Neal Cruz just pulled off of it a little bit right there that front shoulder coming open in staying closed if he does that he's going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some Authority instead of a fly out to left swing and a miss and he got him and good work there on the now for the pirate Hunter Str here comes a pitch highfly ball lifted in the air right field McCutchen brings it in with a nice and grab and now for the Phillies Brandon Marsh swings and misses one one activity in the bullpen Jaylen beaks the left hander up and throwing swing in a Miss as he was out front that time next offering misses now one and two good slider down and in can be so hard to get on plane with you're better off taking that pitch one down Bas is empty now Fly ball to Right Center McCutchen after it he's got it two away down every day during batting practice these outfielders get about 10 minutes of balls in the gaps they practice this and when the game comes they make the play perfectly Sosa stands in here leaves that one off the inside and that is cut and miss and it's one and one two down over the yard ground ball right side and that chance handled fires over to First Beats him to the bag onto the new arm out of the bullpen Carlos EST stez just a weak Fly ball this time stop sizing this one UPS it in one away so next to the plate for Pittsburgh Brian De La Cruz that's a really nice play ranging back into the outfield for that catch we all know those can be a little tricky especially if the wind swirling around out there up next for the Pirates Rowdy to Clips the outside corner it's own and one gets the slider in there for a strike that slider breaking in can be a tricky pitch if you don't finish it and have that fite at the end and it stays out over the it can get a long way but that was a good one right there and that one is lifted in the air makes the catch and that is that back here in Philadelphia now the third baseman Alec bone stratt back to work no one and a pitch inside there's The Swinging a Miss 1 up the middle lays out but he can't squeeze it not in time great effort there but now the goad run is on it first so digging in now for Philadelphia Bryson stop swing and a highfly ball down the left field line but hooking foul with the winning run on it first here in Extra Innings swings and misses at the pitch off the plate well there's a certain point where you have to commit to what you think you see and he guessed wrong right there nasty slider with just terrific fight at the end and a pitch right through there got him down on strikes and there's one away here in the 12 next to hit Kyle schwarber oh0 for four three fly outs and a strike out that's in there going one one down winning run on first thought off [Applause] foul the 02 on a line brings it in and they're two down man that's one of those ADV bats where you have to remind yourself it's about the process he did everything right right there nothing to show for it but in your mind and you have to convince yourself that it was a very good at bat no ball one hitter but you got to be ready to jump on the first thing straight and he got one right there bit left the bat on his shoulder and misses it's a strike out dominating strike out there on just three pitches and that's what a good power pitcher can do to you he's Hitt his spots filling up the strike zone sometimes he over before it really begins in the air right field castanos gets under it drops into the glob and a couple of quick outs con F stands in now and watches strike one two down nobody on here deep into Extra [Applause] Innings on the ground Trey Turner gloves it whips it to first on the run and they get the out so they turn things over to the righty Colin holder and digging in for Philadelphia JT real mut swings through that one for strike one next one misses one and one and another [Applause] ball swings through that two two and a swing and a miss the hatrick one away Johan Roos stands in for the [Applause] Phillies and that one fouled off B is empty one away and here in Extra Innings and that's off the Inside Edge and now it's even one and one [Applause] and that one fouled [Applause] off got him looking that's a strike [Applause] out so the batting order turns over and now for the Phillies Trey Turner tapped at the plate but it's a foul [Applause] ball 01 now and a swinging to [Applause] miss2 that one way outside now one and two here's a highfly ball out to Center Taylor has a beat on it caral it and that will end the inning all set to begin the 14 at the plate for Pittsburgh number 19 on the ground to Third and it goes just foul strike two ball St s to miss and now one away that was a pretty good pitch the strike zone we're seeing more fasts in that location hits especially with two strikes have to be ready to pull the trigger Clips the corner and
