welcome to the biggest little city in the world Reno Nevada McKay Stadium home to the Nevada Wolf Pack where we have hit the jackpot with this matchup we've got a terrific matchup for you today rich in pageantry and tradition and it ought to be a fantastic clash as we'll see a squad from the ACC the SMU Mustangs taking a team from the Mountain West the Nevada Wolf Pack for EA Sports college football ree Davis with you alongside David Pollock and Jesse Palmer time to get this game started Nevada about to kick it off to get this game started he'll start the return inside his five and he's able to pick his way through the traffic nicely for a good return on that one before he's brought down so SMU offense will get the first possession of the game and here he comes a man who epitomizes the phrase the tight end's always open David and yes he is Reese and is so cool the tight end position now has evolved so much you can move him all over the field and you can really highlight a guy of his ability too big for safeties to cover and too fast for linebackers to cover this is a weapon they've got to take advantage of you want to settle everybody in on the road you want to take the nerves away run the football really really good job the offensive line they're physical and nasty they're not nervous they're not worried about this crowd getting loud they just want to hit you right in the mouth and they started the game off with some good physicality PS and fires complete to the right nice pitch and catch there and they'll have enough for the first down really good job working through his progression you get it to him quickly and the big tight end has a chance to run a little and a really good job by the QB throwing an accurate throw I I got to hit those guys on the Move On The Run so they can do this they can catch the football get up field and chew up some extra yards try to get the edge with a quick touch pass he has the first and still on his feet he was working his way toward that goal line they'll stop him at the two after the big play up top and this receiver is so dangerous there so many different ways that he can hurt a defense you got to throw it to him conventionally but find creative ways to get him the football out in space and let him go to work the Mustangs trying to get a touchdown on first and [Applause] goal they're going to run it he worked his way ever closer all the way down to the one yd line [Applause] second and goal coming up tries again to get it in really nice stop there from this senior leader how about the defender being a heat seeking missile he was on radar lock he found the football and blew down with some bad intentions now it's third and [Applause] goal trying to pound it in and will cruise into the end zone touchdown Mustangs I think what you love about that opening drive for the offense is the balance they were able to throw the football to set themselves up into position and then he carries it in for the TD you got to be able to keep defenses on their heels and they did a nice job of that on this opening drive ling up to tack one more onto that lead and he's got the extra point and it's seven nothing to start this one so that scoring Drive took only six plays and it was closed out by the short yardage touchdown kickoff team has the ball teed up in there about ready to go here he comes from inside his own five didn't find any crease in that kickoff coverage and he'll be stopped at the 17 so Nevada's offense will try to get something going with their first possession as we take a look at our impact players for this game David what do you look for to make an impact from your leaders your leaders not only have to lead the football team but they got to step up and make plays on the field keep everybody calm these guys typically do a really good job of it yeah David and they also generally set the tone for their respective football teams regardless of which side of the ball they play on the teammates look towards them to step up in big games like this Nevada going quickly they're going to go right back to him on first down and they'll bring him to the ground after a short gain all right well the offense here they're trying to get this run game established they obviously don't break off a long run there but they're just trying to find their footing at this point didn't get much on first down it's second and nine Lewis wants to pass fires to the tight end they stop him almost immediately short gain there and still a little ground to cover to pick up the first a nice job by the defense there tackling the catch and smothering the tight end they know this offense is going to try to find him in the passing game in a lot of different situations that time perfect coverage and nice job bringing the big guy down not easy to do gets it out quickly they'll finally drag him down but not before he gets it to the 40 and it's a first down well they pick up the first against Zone coverage I think a big part of this for young quarterbacks out there is if you're going to be throwing into Zone coverage you got to throw on time you can't stare down receivers because the entire defense has their eyes on you so you can't Telegraph where the ball's going you've got to hold it to the very last possible second try to freeze Defenders with your eyes and then throw the ball into open areas of the field anticipating where your gu is going to be you run those routes those cow routes just like that those DBS are going to break when you go to throw the football so you better put that thing on a line and the QB did there put on a line great job great catch first down Wolfpack with a first and 10 here from the gun he leaves it with the bat he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple listen I know there are a lot of DBS out there that all they want to do is get interceptions and dance in the end zone this dude likes to put his face in the fan get close to the line of scrimmage and tackle and on the opening drive that he's out there he gets a huge tackle for loss early that is a statement play leaves it with the running back they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one man what a spectacular play by that defensive end to come up with the tackle there and you see those guys get off the football so fast most of these guys are 250 to 275 pounds but they get off the ball fast low in the offensive lineman they have no chance to stop those guys as quick and as fast as they are makes to grab on the left all right the offense wanted a first down there but they got the completion and now it sets up a fourth down situation where it's manageable I can accomplish it and yes I'm going for it they'll have to settle for a field goal attempt and this one will be a 40 yd try from the left hatch it's good easy call for the refs so after the made field goal they'll kick it away and rely on their defense from inside the 10 yd line he'll bring it back couldn't find a way to create that broken field as he stopped at the 25 the SMU offense is headed back onto the field Jess to take it down the field for backto back touchdowns it's really important for them moving forward too to have a lot of balance right you want to be able to keep this defense guessing po yeah and you got me searching for answers after that last drive you stack another drive on top of this their defense's heads are going to be spinning all over the place eight- yd pickup on first down leaves them with second and short to the air it's Stone got his man quickly a quick tackle may but he's got plenty for the first down well they're able to complete the hitch throw against man coverage and hey quarterback's got to be able to get it to him quickly because he knows that Defender is going to be driving on the ball so really nice job not hesitating getting it to him and then he gets what he can get after the catch the offense lines up at the 41 with a first and 10 he's looking to throw it fires to the tight end really nice job there by both guys the throw and the catch to work that defense and get the first down that throw and catch a really good example of why coaches don't want a quarterback to get stuck on a particular Target isn't it David yep it's exactly right find the guy who's open because you got so many guys that have so much speed that can do so much damage on the field find my match up get it to him let him do the rest fows through the defense and it's just simple simple first down run showing your physicality setting your defense up in a good [Applause] spot solid pick up of four on first down it's second and six motion from the offense receiver on the Move gets the touch pass that defense pushing him out of bounds after a short gain well and on these little push passes timing is so important you're trying to snap it right as he's getting a full head when he gets the ball he's hitting the outside and David it puts the defense in such a difficult spot you immediately have to be rotating when you see that motion so everybody's got to communicate and kind of bump over that's why offenses love to run it just it makes the defense communicate and see if you can just get him out of his spot he ended up going backwards on the play and they will not convert that third down how about that you don't see those you know touch passes go for negative yards very often usually this is a short f is a completion that goes a long way but the defense aggressive saw it pulled the trigger came outside made sure he didn't get outside and get to that edge nice job by the defense no good after the miss the lead is still Nevada takes over as the offense returns to the field guys that last trip a little disappointing having to take the three yeah I think Jesse you see so many offenses talk about getting yards and the the expressway is wide open and they got the defense on that one and they get it to the 29 yd line I know it's early in the game but defensively after that play you know you have to tackle the cat C when this guy gets the ball in his hands he is so dangerous after the fact so it's okay for him to make catches just got to get him to the ground quickly the give to the back knocked down after a three yd gain to the 25 you know runs like this often times are like a boxer in a boxing match obviously it's not a knockout punch but these are body blows and as the game goes on these small gains are going to turn into longer runs after the three- yd pickup they come to the line Second and seven give to the running back blast is way ahead but not much room a pick up of one to the 24 balls at the 24 a lot of confidence in their kicker from here but they'd love to take it off of his foot and convert the first down Lewis to throw receiver looks it in it's complete and gang tackling on this dude is a good idea they needed it but he still got the first down well look that wasn't a touchdown but that was a massive play for this offense they needed some momentum they needed to find a rhythm in what better way than converting on thir thir down awesome job by the quarterback getting through his progression free snap Motion in the back field from the Red Zone looking for a receiver got his man on the outside you'll take this every time five yards on the first down play you know sometimes even a short game like that can be used to set up something bigger later on no doubt reys they can pump that and take a shot down the field and don't worry they're going to go back to that same play because they know this guy with the ball in his hands is dangerous he makes one guy Miss he can take it to the house he wants to throw here on second down he makes a grab he's down at the one and they almost had the touchdown pass on that one when you're a defense you have a choice do you play man or do you play zone they sat back in zone that might change they might change their mind and try to switch to man here shortly in the future Nevada comes to the line on first and goal pushes ahead he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple there is nowhere to run and nowhere to hide on these situations you know the physical ground game comes into play inside the 5 yd line and they match the intensity nice job everybody flying around to the football making the tackle for a loss nice job by this defense can the D deny them on second and goal he's looking to throw and he was going for the touchdown there and they couldn't make the connection well that last incompletion is a good example of why your timing has to be so good as a quarterback because the windows they open and they close so quickly in this part of the field the defense has been up to the task so far now it's third and goal from the three trying to slam in Andes way into the end zone touchdown wolf and I love it I love the physicality of this offense it's third and goal I trust my offensive line to pave the way give the ball to my running back and know he's going to physically punch this thing into the end zone on to attempt the try and the extra point gives him a three-point lead at 10 to S they took it 64 yd right down the field and Clos the deal with a three- yd touchdown run the kickoff team out there and ready to go [Applause] on the run from inside his zone five didn't find any crease in that kickoff coverage and he'll be stopped at the 17 the Mustangs have the ball back and ready to go to work you want to talk about taking the wind out of your sails Drive the ball down the field and miss the field goal David you know what don't leave it up to Kickers execute better offensively I think you move the ball nice you got to keep that in mind but Palmer I think you got to stay aggressive and don't settle for field go yeah because you got to know there's just no margin for error right now you just have got to be able to execute at a higher level now on first down from the 30 the give on the inside he's dropped behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three they tried to run the counter but absolutely nothing doing and those counter plays take a little longer to develop sometimes you're usually pulling one or two guys and that penetration Back Field can kill you and get to the running back before he gets started last play was a near disaster now dealing with second and 13 just a solid stop by this sophomore yeah it's a nice job by this defense understanding listen that QB is a threat and they're going to run all kinds of options and he's going to run the football they were dialed in and got that sucker to the ground it'll take some work to get to the sticks it's third and long from the 30 on the move it's Stone got his Man Down field ripped off a huge chunk play on that one as he gets the first down before he steps out of bounds well after that last play you can see how electrifying this guy is and how special he is after he makes the catch if I'm on offense I'm trying to find a lot of ways to get him touches in this game and the Mustangs moving quickly to the line [Applause] looking for a physical attack from the gun open space at the 25 and chunk plays on the name of the game and they get one here before the defense finally makes a stop what a run great speed great vision elusiveness and David he's tackled down close to the goal line yeah and this offense when you can run the football like this man you will have success especially in the Red Zone trying to get touchdowns they ripped off a huge chunk and now a little chunk is needed to pay it off he'll pull it on the read and he'll finish the run in the end zone touchdown SMU and I tell you what ree I'm not picking a team unless I got a guy that can do something like this quarterback spot I need an athlete I need a little bit of Mobility it just dictates too much to the defense QB runs in for six they'll try to add another to their lead and with the extra point they're up 14- 10 so that scoring Drive took only six plays and he got into the house from the sixth to finish it about to kick it away after scoring the [Applause] touchdown looking for an alley from inside his own 10 he was hoping for something a little more Dynamic but they get him on the ground at the 20 Nevada takes over as the offense returns to the field the run from the shotgun crosses the 30 he's got a lane they stay aggressive and push their way out to the 33 and it's first down and I don't care if I get it by two by 20 by 30 by 40 I I just I just want to get the first down understanding the situation understanding where the sticks are doesn't have to be sexy but I got to make sure I get to that stick get to the first down mark will ride the hot hand pass the first down marker and still running and they'll finally get him down after a terrific pick up and that is just an attitude run running it right up the middle right into the teeth of that defense the offense setting up shop at the 46 first and 10 he wants to throw quick ly to the tight end and he might be known for run fits but that was a sure and heavy tackle on the tight end that's the end of the period and SMU has the lead and we've come to the end of the first as we take a moment to check out the stats so far they are are lined up and ready to go and get things started here in the second wide receiver coming across in motion Lewis wants to pass he's right on Target and he'll be run out of bounds behind the line of scrimmage not a very productive play there try to pick up a first down they'll snap it from the gun on third down looking to scramble keeps it and gets past to chains they finally Corral him but he turns that into a big gain and a first down I mean these quarterbacks nowadays can run so fast think about who you've got chasing him defensive lineman those big old defensive tackles defensive end linebackers they can't catch him because they're faster than them nowadays so much speed so much electricity now with these guys they'll throw it on first down wide open down field gets out of bounds after the big play and they'll be set up in business for the first and goal we've seen really nice balance here on this drive quarterback's three for three he's picking this defense apart they've also run the ball well two and here they are down close to the goal line this defense has no idea what's coming next Nevada comes to the line on first and goal looking to throw got it they'll Mark him down at the two the excellent execution on that throw and catch you know the defense doesn't have an answer for this slot guy right now they may want to think about bracketing him having a Defender play to the outside and to the inside probably some sort of Zone coverage where you're trying to get two bodies forcing the quarterback to have to go somewhere else with the ball trying to barge in and he'll find The End Zone touchdown Nevada another rushing touchdown that's now two on the game this offense thought they could come into this one running the ball being the more physical team and they look like it right now now they'll line up for what they hope is automatic and the extra point puts them up by a field goal they March 79 yds on the drive and finish to deal with the short touchdown run from the two the kickoff team takes the field to boot this one [Applause] away on the move from inside is five really disciplined job by the coverage unit to get down there and make the stop at the 19 theu offense is headed back onto the field the way this game started you feel as if you have to score a touchdown every time you have it and now we'll see if they can respond yeah and I wonder how much pressure that puts on the offense Jesse like you know this is back and forth and I got to score and every possession matters so much what does that do to you as a quarterback well it puts a lot more pressure on you for sure to feel like I got to make every third down throw if guys are open vertically down the field I got to hit them too we can't let our serve get broken they'll go to the ground picks up the first down still moving still on his feet at the 45 and they'll finally bring him down after he rips off a huge play way you count up those explosive plays in a game and you put a little extra Star by the big runs yeah this running back is a weapon boy he is so good in space he's got shiftiness he can make guys miss and if this guy gets into the second level watch out he can hit a home run the G from the gun and that's a very productive first down play and bringing up second and three I know it's sexy to throw the football but if you can pound it away and get these kind of gains they will just add up wear the defense down get first downs and ultimately get some points good spot after that seveny pickup on first down it's second and three they're going to run it to the right the Mustangs will have a first down well it's a nice run there to keep the drive going get the first down I tell tell guys I'm impressed so far by this offense and their ability to run it early and the Mustangs are on the move out of the gun the running back has it they'll finally get him on the ground but not before he makes it to the 30 and gets a first down and with that last carry into triple digits over 100 yard for the day and he's showing you power he's showing you speed he's showing you make you miss he really is showing you he's a complete back and by the way it's still the first half been showing them the run now they'll throw it he's got an open man defense is there to make the stop but he's got the first down and they'll have it first and goal at the six last couple of plays the offense seems to be just one step ahead David yeah and I'm going to have to do something to disrup the timing the Rhythm I got to do something that they're not expecting because right now they got the run and they got the pass working so this defense have to find something new to kind of confuse this offense quick pass on the Fly motion into the end zone touchdown Mustangs he'll try to tack on one more and the extra point is good and it's a fourpoint lead the officials offer the deal and the coach accepts it they will take the penalty the kickoff team out there to boot it away in 15 yards farther up the field after the roughing the kicker penalty no chance return that one a booming kickoff out of the back of the end zone it's a Touchback looking for a productive play on first down they'll give it to the B nice move to pick up yardage crosses the 30 to the 31 A6 yd gain you want to talk about making it easy for an offensive coordinator you pick up a bunch of yards on first down make that second down really really manageable that's a great job by the offense 6yd pickup on first down leaves him with second and four from the gun the running back has it pushes for a couple they'll mark it at the 33 and these defensive tackles just eat people they swallow human beings when you get near them they're so big so strong those guys those running backs coming they just need a mid they put one mid on a running back and he usually falls to the ground just because of their sheer mass and strength off the play fake fires to the wide out missed his receiver there it's incomplete defense did a great job third and short on the oppon side of the field they're expecting quick throw everybody they dug their heel on the ground they're able to break on the ball Force the incompletion the Wolfpack will line up to punt it away this will be their first punt of the afternoon excellent coverage that time didn't give him any room to set up a big return the Mustangs have the ball back and ready to go to work back to pass it's Stone and he was drilled just as he released the pass it's incomplete well this defense felt coming into the game that if he was going to try to throw from the pocket they could get to him and affect his accuracy and they did on that last play and after the incompletion on first down this offense looking at second [Applause] down from the shotgun now here's an inside G gets it across the 30 to the 31 a pick up of five the counter play is a great play to mix in because defensively you you're not looking for the counter you're looking to attack attack attack all of a sudden two guys pull across the formation now you got to change your direction really quickly and it keeps you off balance and really keeps you on your heels give to the running back he's got enough for the first down they'll spot it at the 37 well that's kind of the advantage of third and medium right is the defense you keep them guessing you could throw it you can run it that time they hand it off and they pick it up yeah and you can see the d drop back a little bit it creates a little bit of space the running back blasts through gets the first down the Mustangs getting set on First and 10 they'll ride the running back and leave it with him makes one man miss and he used that spin move to put him in the spin cycle and gain extra yardage coaches always harp about staying ahead of the ch and when you can run with that type of efficiency on first down man you are doing just that after the nyd pickup on first down here's second and one he'll do it himself and he found plenty of Running Room on that one before the defense was finally able to get him down and such an advantage when you got a quarterback that you can design the Run game through like it makes it so because instead of handing it off back in the day Palmer like you used to do all the time and stand there now you get the running back blocking for you so you're adding an extra Blocker in the Run game which makes it really nice on on offense yeah I had way less pressure on me back when I played it was literally just throw the ball or turn around and hand it off to someone way more athletic than me they're strong and they're strong defensive tackles they're strong strong there's such big jokers in the Middle where they just lock out those offensive linemen and running backs listen they don't have much of a chance when you got that 300 plus pound guy grabbing you around the shoulder pad you tend to go to the ground pretty quick didn't have much room to run and not a whole lot of help short gain there and still plenty of ground to cover for the first down nice job there by the defense not forgetting about the fullback he's not just a lead blocker he can catch the ball on this offense too they were aware of that and they were able to make the tackle they've got to get the ball to the 32 to pick up the first down trying play action finds his man it's Maryland finally run out of bounds but he has this offense rolling with a first down how about this offense they're rolling they got a couple first downs together defense next what's your response what do you got you got to make some adjustments here now on First and 10 from the 27 [Applause] looking to move it through the air throws to the wide out got him down field he is down at the one a terrific run after the throw and catch my goodness this offense has got it rolling they might put up a 50 Burger this defense they don't have any answers right now they're going to have to figure something out and the stains trying to cash it in on first and goal fast motion from the offense they want to run this quarterback and he runs it in for the score touchdown SMU that drive was what every father wants his daughter's romances to be like slow take your time drain the clock no hurry at all sometimes love is a Slow Burn that's what we just saw on that last Drive I am so impressed with the execution and I love their ability to run the football these players they're coached up they're coming out here and they are executing exactly how their coaches prepared them to do in this game lining up to tack one more onto that lead the kick is up and good and put one more on the lead they put together a 74 yd touchdown Drive and they capped it off with a one yd plunge about to kick it off after punching it in for the touchdown he'll bring it back from inside his spot really disciplined job by the coverage unit to get down there and make the stop at the 19 Nevada takes over as the offense returns to the field he'll take a deep shot here snags it on the right nothing but green ahead he's at the 10 touchdown Nevada and once he got away from the D they had no shot at catching it man that's a play this kid has been running ever since he was seven years old at the park with his best friend throwing him go RS right down the field I'm running by a guy I'm looking back locating the football making the catch and he does it in a big moment here in this game getting set for the point after and with the extra point they close it to a 2824 game that one's going to get a little star marked besided on the way sheet One play explosive touchdown just like that the kickoff unit about to go to [Applause] work here's the return from inside his 10 he was looking for more Running Room but none to be found as he stopped at the 23 the SMU offense is headed back onto the field the give to the tail back and he could not get loose on the run you can't let let the same guy beat you over and over and over again you got to make adjustments sometimes you got to bring more guys in the Box more guys to the football and make sure he's not the one who beats you got stuffed on first down it's second and [Applause] 10 they'll run it from the gun into a mass of giant bodies we'll call it a one yard gain to the 24 I like feeding my guy I like getting my running back touches feeding the so he can break some of those big runs but I'm also okay with these little ones set the tone stay balanced a third and long coming up here looking for a man it's Stone unloads to the wide out it's complete and he gets it up to the 36 it'll be a first down and after that pitching catch he's already over 200 yards and we're in the first half Jesse man ree he's dialed in right now is really doing a nice job seeing the field reading coverages and finding his open guy he'll come out throwing on first down he's got it and the explosive play and they're on the move all the way to the 44 it is so good for an offense early in the game to get in a rhythm and to start stringing first downs together it makes the game really easy and puts that defense in a situation where they're starting to get tired they want to sub they to get other guys on the field stringing first downs together like this makes it harder [Applause] defend the give to the running back from the shotgun you'll take four yards on first down every time second and six it's the emo of this offense and they really put a lot on the offensive line to go out and really try and establish their dominance and their assertiveness and they've done a good job of that early in this game running the football after the productive first down play it's second and six he'll keep it himself gets it past to marker tackled but he has a first down such an advantage when you have an athletic quarterback today in college football because they can help you move the sticks with their legs great open field running ability by this QB the Mustangs will snap it on First and 10 [Applause] to the ground with the back got some room headed to the goal line and he'll Glide his way in for the score touchdown Mustangs saw a crease nothing but Green Grass and opportunity and he flashed through it for six and when you can get 30 plus yards out of your running back and he can make big plays like this man it's hard to call a lot of passes I'm just going to feed this guy The Rock lining up for the pat and the extra point is good they're up 35- 24 so it's a 77 yd touchdown drive and he closed the deal by scooting 31 yards for the score lining up to cover the kick after that touchdown drive and he takes this from inside the five not a lot of space to be found good Hustle by the coverage team and they stop him at the 21 Nevada takes over as the offense returns to the field to the air on first down lets it Fly and it slips through his fingers incomplete that would have been a huge game if he could have held on Hey listen the quarterback didn't get the completion on that throw but that doesn't mean you can't try again trust in your Playmakers outside to push the field and stretch it vertically and make a play for you and won't surprise me to see this QB take more shots as this game goes on quarterback on the keeper and you can forget running in the middle against this defense really nice job by the defense shutting down all the options don't let him get into his reading phase go get him right now play sound and more importantly tackle him and get him on the ground not exactly the ideal situation for this offense third and long backed up inside their 20 Lewis to throw makes the grab down the middle just Slither through The Tackle and he's got room to run they got him free for a big gain down to the 43 That's What's So Scary About This offense they've got guys in the perimeter that can change the game in one single play and you saw it right there too much speed on the perimeter to create that explosive play we've made our way to the two-minute warning and now they'll try to at least cut a little something off of this lead before the break offense line up for a first and 10 from the 43 he's going to pass caught over the middle it's Howell excellent job working through the air there finding a hole in that defense and picking up a first down well the defense did a nice job taking everything away down the field but once the drag route was caught they just couldn't rally to the ball carrier in time to make a tackle and as a result new set of downs offense threatening first and 10 from the the 31 fires to the wide out got it in the middle it's Howell and this junior quarterback shows you why the scouts love that big arm of his and I love the awareness by the wide receiver on that play because I'm not sure that route was supposed to be that deep you got to wonder if the receiver decided maybe to adjust the route a little bit to make sure that he got the first down looking to pass inside the Red Zone quick strike complete and just a short safe pass play they pick up a few he's just winning that match up in the slot every time and when you put him in the slot Reese he's closer to the quarterback it's an easier throw we can run in we can run out and really take advantage of his versatility of the guy that slot position motion trying to get the defense to show it hand and that pass will be Jarred loose on second down that brings up third down they'd love to pick up this third down and get a fresh set with first and goal Lewis wants to pass quickly complete and they finally haul him down but not before the good catch and run a timeout is called as this offense tries to find a way to get more points on the board before for the half first and goal and a great opportunity to slice into this lead wide receiver shows motion trying to barge their way in he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple there's a Timeout on the field tight game here late in the first half and you got to get locked in in the Red Zone a lot of defensive coordinators they'll tell you we'll give up yards but we got to understand what we're trying to get accomplished great job down here near the goal line this defense both touchdown wolf pack and they add six more to the board with that trip to the house that's a nice drive a nice physicality punching it in with the Run game and here's the thing I like where this offense is going nice job creating some momentum going into the half cutting down the lead this thing could get really exciting nice job answering the Bell right before the half ling up to add another and after the extra point the lead is now down to four 3531 he marked 78 yd down the field and finished the deal with the short touchdown run from the two the kickoff team out there getting set from inside his own 10 let's see what he gets and the returner goes down the Mustangs have the ball back and ready to go to work they've got time they've got the lead and David is sort of like a doctor first Do no harm Do no harm but also running toward the tape he's at the 40 running inside the 20 touchdown SMU and they take it in for six more points an unbelievable timing with the quarterback and wide receiver get it to him in his hands right on his frame where he can run after the catch and do some serious damage and and that's why he's so dangerous because of that ability after the catch for these DBS in this game you've got to tackle the reception because if you don't get him down he's taking it to the house Pat unit on the field and with the extra point they push the lead out a little further if only always this easy for the offensive coordinators One play big chunk yardage foot points on the board just like that they got the late touchdown on the board now about to kick it away and hoping the defense can keep them from answering he'll start the return inside his five and the returner could find no daylight he goes down power football with the Run that's what you expect from a senior don't give them any extra yards great tackle there that's the end of the second quarter that means it's time to join Kevin and our halftime update thanks guys a first half that saw a little bit of everything there in Reno and you know in a day where the spread option and air raid are the offenses of choice how nice is it to see the three yards and a cloud of dust approach although we've also seen some runs go for a lot longer physical offensive lines coupled with great backs is like a throwback to the olden days and that's refreshing and with that let's send it back to the guys inside macki stadium yeah and he's been throwing it all over the yard and he's now over 300 yards on the day so been a successful day now 300 yards I don't know Palmer 300 nowadays that's like what back in the day for you that would have been 500 I would have won the Heisman maybe it's a big deal today in college football no doubt listen he's in a rhythm right now he's in a Groove we've seen good decision making he's been playing on time and he's been deadly accurate throwing it guess what this game is far from over nowhere to run on that one he loses four on the carry how about the defensive end understanding football understanding that I got to keep outside contained I'm responsible for the quarterback good job playing his responsibility and how about getting that sucker on the ground he's a pretty good athlete to be able to Corral him tackle him right in the middle of the field and get him to the ground Lewis to throw finds his man in the middle they make the stop but not before he takes a chunk out of what they need to move the sticks the modest gain on the completion really shows why you want to run the Zone make them execute and rally to the ball 100% Zone eyes on the quarterback I see him throw the football break on it go make tackles live to fight another down trying to move the sticks on third down through the air it's complete to the left and he couldn't quite get to the marker and that's going to bring up a fourth down they' hop to be able to pick up enough after the catch but a good stop leaves them with a fourth and short really good job by the defense being physical understanding the situation in the game the ball's going going to come out quick you know that go make the tackle Force the fourth down fourth down and the punt team sends it the other way no return coming he'll call for the fair catch the SMU offense is headed back onto the field they torched this defense with an explosive passing play for a score last time out let's see if they go right back at him a seven yd pickup it'll be second and three and a nice job by the running back finding space getting downhill making the good run great job finishing with his pads they can really be aggressive after that last play it's second and three from the gun running back gets to get not a lot of daylight he gets one to the 32 [Applause] third down after the run they'll try to pick up the first through the air oh they really could have used that catch their physical pass defense it brings up a fourth down and I like the aggressiveness on Third and short trying to throw the football take advantage of a look that they got they weren't successful and now it's Fourth and short territory who knows what they're going to do and the Mustangs will send out the punt unit he'll call for the fair catch here Nevada takes over as the offense returns to the field the last time we saw this offense we had to look quick it was a three and out Jesse he just had no rhythm in that last drive so someone's going to have to step up and make a play David and get this thing going yeah let's find some juice find your guy find those plays that you know you can run inside out forward backwards get some first downs get some positive momentum Nevada going quickly the running back has it discards a man he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple well he did everything he could to try to avoid all those Defenders but at the end it's still a negative play tackle for loss one Defender then the next one the blitzing guy got a shot at him everybody had a shot it took a while to get him down yeah great effort by that defense not quitting on the play leaves it with the back they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one that linebacker was a heat seeking missile and the heat that he sought was the ball carrier yeah great job great fi linebackers are making all the calls in the defense and understanding when I need to come through that game Gap and come through with bad intentions those guys are usually 245 lbs of heat seeking missile on Third and long he's going to have to turn one loose down field just missed his man gave him just a little too much it's so nice when you know it's third and long you know a pass is coming you worked on it all week get your feet set at the sticks understand that quarterback's got to be rushed get him off of his spot nice execution by this defense the wolf pack will have to bring the punt team onto the field he'll try to really get into this one fair catch called for and made the Mustangs have the ball back and ready to go to work boy three and out last time David they'd like to be more productive this time around yeah in the last Drive nothing really clicked no rhythm got off the field really really quickly they need to put something together here OPP yeah David bad execution on that last drive so they got to take a collective breath and start playing like a unit on this didn't get much on first down it's second and nine he'll pull it on the read good vision and determination there to find his way up to the 23 when you're a defense it is stop the run first that is your first responsibility it makes the whole game easy and right now they got it going on the ground the defense going to have to change up these little tiny Dink and dunk Dink and dunk you keep doing this they'll go all the way down the field on you so you might want to get a little bit more aggressive On The Run it's Stone all kinds of room to throw that one in there really good job to pick up a chunk of yardage and get it out to the 39 yd line and with that one he's now over three bills for the game and there's two reasons why Rees he's made good decisions and he's been accurate throwing the football all game long the Mustangs with the first and [Applause] 10 they'll leave it with him a strong tackle and wrap up from the junior small game I know but again the defense knows he's going to run the football he's willing to run the football not just drop back and pass make him on to the Run game you got to do a lot of this got three on first down it's second and seven [Applause] he's looking to throw grabs it in the middle and it is a chunk play a huge gain on that one before the defense brings it to an end this dude is putting up numbers he just cracked the 150 Mark in receiving yards man he's a weapon ree he runs routes he's fast he's great with the football in his hands and he can line up in a lot of different spots and run the entire route tree I mean what can't this guy do [Applause] he'll do it himself got enough for the first and he's still going and a really nice run and pick up there before the defense avoided disaster and stopped the really big play and if a quarterback's going to have success in the Run game he's got to have guys helping him out right it's not just the offensive lineman it's not just the running back doing a good job selling the Run fake but these receivers they're doing a great job getting down field and getting some blocks they go to the ground tackle is made after a pick up of six down to the 19 yd line it's going to be important this offensive line is able to get a little bit of push just got to give this guy an inch a little crease and he can make yards for it got six on first down now a lot of options on second and [Applause] four to throw it's Stone and the throw down the gut falls to the grass couldn't find his man last time now they'll have to convert third and four from the gun wants to pass and the third down pass is incomplete third and short in college football today you see so much more pass than you used to the offense stays aggressive and I think they stay aggressive because they know they're in field goal range they got that three in their back pocket and now on fourth down they'll try a field goal the kicker will reach for a 36 yd attempt it's good and now the leads extended a little further after that last field goal Drive they're set to kick it away here he comes from inside his own five he was looking for some Running Room but not much to be found as he stopped at the 18 Nevada takes over as the offense returns to the field they'll start this drive with a pass got it in the middle it's how this is when the pressure can ramp up a little bit on an offense David when they start feeling the heat to answer a score and I think being down 14 you can kind of feel that way but dude if you put a good drive together this is a seven-point game so Palmer no need to panic I was just going to say David I mean this thing can flip quick you go down score all of a sudden your defense gets a stop or who knows better yet gets a turnover this game is entirely different he get him stopped after a gain of four out to the 28 I think that was an example of the offensive coordinator trying to help out his quarterback he's trying to keep these third Downs manageable you know you throw the ball on second down and it's incomplete now you've set up third and long and now you're up to fail and this offense just can't afford not to get the first down here already trailing big and the clock is not and that's a live ball and the defense jumps on it they get that turnover man it was just the impact of the hit that dislodged the football from the ball carry there was a heat seeking missile coming in there and he knocked that thing loose the SMU offense is headed back onto the field that last Drive was a long one Jesse they'd like this time to pay it off with a touchdown instead of a field goal no doubt Rees they had a lot of good stuff going that last drive need to get a tutty up on the board here to extend that lead David and I think you definitely want a touchdown but if you put another long drive together get points multiple possessions in a row start to let those body blows add up and where this def out good spot after that seven yd pickup on first down it's second and three looking for a man it's Stone zings it complete to the right and they knock him down but he got past The Line Game nice job by the running back catching the football and understanding where the first down marker was I got to go get that first down did a nice job of it it's first down from the 11 [Applause] he's looking to throw it using the quick game they'll get it down to the eight yd line on that throw and catch and the defense is backed up against the wall I love playing man-to-man defense and I love getting up in your kitchen and jamming you at the line of scrimmage but it's really hard when they start running these Crossing routes and drags and ends because now I'm in Chase mode and the QB has a little bit of space A lot of times and those fast guys can create some separation and get a first downs it in in the end Z touchdown Mustangs that's his third touchdown pass of the day the defense has no clue how to respond right now no and the defense has had absolutely no answer he's been on the money he's been on fire making the right decisions and just carving this defense up he'll try to add another to their lead and the extra point is true and the lead balloons to 21 almost ready to kick it away after scoring the touchdown on the run from inside five and the returner will be brought down here's this offense with a fresh set of downs hand off to the single running back that's a really good job by the defense wrapping him up getting him on the ground take away that run game make him onedimensional put him in passing situations really good job by the defense picked up two yards on that last one they need eight on second down going with the ground game left he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple great job by the whole defense but how about the little bitty defensive back throwing his face in the fan I ain't scared I don't just cover guys I make tackles you make up the game plan and not a lot on the play sheet for this third and long from inside their own 20 Lewis wants to pass he makes the connection he's close to the first down but they're going to Mark him just a little short one of the things I love about this defense is they just have such great awareness and they're always communicating they understood the down and distance they knew exactly what they needed to do to make the tackle to force the punt that is so well done Nevada will be forced to punt fourth time tonight we've seen this guy come on to punt he'll settle for some pretty good field position and make the fair catch at around the 35 the Mustangs have the ball back and ready to go to work there have been few obstacles for this offense as they are starting to pull away here in the second half Jesse and this has been a dream game for this play caller too right it's like anything that he's calling is working flawlessly yeah it's fun to be the offensive coordinator but not the defensive coordinator they have had no answers it's been an absolutely miserable day trying to Solve the Riddle of this offense after getting knocked back to open this drive it's second and 12 One Step WRA Two Step squeeze this junior knows how to get him on the ground third down verions are a huge stat and this one would be a doozy if they can pull it off he's looking to throw that pass is well off Target he got hit as he was trying to throw and they can't convert on third down and finally the defense is able to get some pressure on this quarterback they had been trying all game long different ways to affect him weren't able to get there but on that play because of the pressure it affected his accuracy and that's why the ball fall was incomplete down and the punt team sends it the other way not going to risk a return here he'll make the fair catch Nevada takes over as the offense returns to the field last time David it was one two three kick the last drive that three and out sometimes that put your defense in a bad spot and you got to get a drive together here so you don't wear the defense out I just think David too predictable that last Drive they got to do something here to get this defense on their heels after the short completion it's now second down Lewis to throw finds his tight end how about this backer in pass coverage and bringing the big hit stick with him too I'll say this man in college football you see a lot of bad tackling you didn't see it right there that was an awesome job first off being there at the point of attack once the tight end made the catch there was no doubt he was going down great job form tackle guys this offense is already reeling down multiple possessions really need to cash in on this drive he'll make a play on third down he's got enough for the first as they mark it at the 32 ever since they invented the forward pass the tight ends have been running the drag and getting the first down I I think it's because the tight ends so much versatility you know they can block and stay in the formation or they can release and come out but either way if the quarterback's patient most of the time that drag route's going to come over he's dropped behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three well they're trying to go option but the linebacker shows his open field tackling ability and also his recognition he expected the quarterback to keep it went after and was able to make the tackle for loss last play was a near disaster now dealing with second and 13 now the play fake fires left and that's going to fall to the ground incomplete that was a physical CCH up there third down coming that's a ball that this offense should be able to complete they had the coverage they wanted receiver ran on the route just an inaccurate throw by the quarterback wow this offense is just stuck in the mud they've already punted four times and it's third down now he's open on the right gets it to the 46 yd line first down for this offense with that pass right there dude he goes over 350 on the day nice performance this QB's been dialed in Nevada going quickly running back searching for a hole he had all kinds of company as soon as he got and he had to fight his way back just to get to the line of scrimmage that back had no to go the defensive line ate up the blocks how about the linebackers swarming in coming in and making a great play on the ball carrier they got nothing on the last play it's second and 10 running back goes in motion Lewis wants the pass floats it out in space they make the stop trying to pick up just a little bit at a time to get to that first down marker that's the end of the period and SMU has the lead and they've built a comfortable lead after three quarters of play Let's Take a look at how we've gotten here just about ready to go in the fourth and we'll see if any drama can be mustered five yards away from another third down conversion on this drive they're already two for two and that's incomplete a Defender all over him knocked the ball to the ground fourth down coming up at this point in the game in the fourth quarter it is going to be tough for this offense to get some completions here because now trailing by this much the defense is expecting pass and they're putting a whole bunch of extra DBS on the field to help them out in coverage on fourth down they'll pass for it he's got him and they convert well they just drained all the suspense out of the fourth down conversion moving the chains easily love the individual effort by the wide receiver after the catch making people Miss showing you the speed now he set up his offense down in the Red Zone maybe this will breathe a little life into this offense which has been flatlined in the second half here's first and 10 they've marched to the Red Zone and here they go catch in the middle it's Howell that throw and catch gets them down to the six and the defense is running out of answers and on that last play he's now over 400 yard passing well Reese if you're going to throw for over 400 bills you got to spread the praise around up front they've done an outstanding job protecting this quarterback and his receivers have been winning one-on-one a first down run in the Red Zone he bullies his way all the way down to the five yd line well he's had the hot hand three TDS in the game already I like just force speeding this guy the rock some more here P if it ain't broke don't fix it they've been the more physical team he does a really good job finding the end zone running the football that's why they featured him today the run up the middle trying to find his way to the goal line and he'll take it in touchdown Nevada have yourself a day Young fella you know why they handed him the ball a lot because he did that that's his fourth trip to P this dude has shown you a little bit of everything what a great back and four touchdowns on the deck they'll try to attack one more on their score smashes it through with the p precise Relentless execution on that 13pl scoring drive and they punctuated it with a 5yd touchdown run they've got it down to a two touchdown deficit trailing by 14 and about to kick it away on the move from inside is five really disciplined job by the coverage unit to get down there and make the stop at the 19 the SMU offense is headed back onto the field they still have the lead here Jesse but this would be a good time to put together a drive you're right ree you can't rest easy right now you just watch the opponent drive down the field and score a touchdown of their own so youve got to answer that here your Playmakers better step up and I don't know what it is about momentum in all the locker rooms in all the years coaching everything you can't quantify it you can't measure it and the momentum has swung to the other side you got to get it back he'll keep it himself gets it past the first down marker and still running and he's brought down after a nice gain and David how demoralizing does it have to be for a defense when you know they're going to run it everyone in the stadium knows they're going to run it and still you cannot stop there's nothing more demoralizing as a defensive lineman because it just it ticks you off it gets in your head you you know that guy's going to come off and smack you and you got to do something about it I think the defense maybe time to start committing more guys to stopping run not worrying about the pass as much it's a point in the game I think as a coaching staff where you really challenge your offens of line to go win the football game right we've got to lead late we're going to run the football and the defense and everybody in the stadium knows that's what's going to happen can we run the ball down their throats and impose our will that's what this offense right now is trying to do keeps it and gets the first down brought down at the 46 but he got 10 on the play I'll tell you the running backs and the quarterbacks in this offense they got to give a lot of their success running the football to this offensive line up front they are getting tremendous push it doesn't matter who has the football who's keeping the football you're just seeing this group up front drive this defense backwards he leaves it with his back a most efficient pick up of six on first down it's second and four I think you have to like what you see if you're the coaching staff here your offense is on the field looks like you got a pretty good drive going and you're just going to try and keep this thing marching keep the clock ticking you've got a really nice lead here late just want to find ways to keep the chains moving they're doing that wide receiver now comes in motion they've got him looking run now they're going to throw it quickly out to the tight end and he laid the lumber to stop him from getting the first down that's a great example of the defense there tackling the catch as the big fella caught the ball down he went not picking up the first lining up to convert third down quick release by the QB he works his way inside the 30 down to the 29 and picks up a first down he just keeps piling up numbers with completion after completion in this standout performance I think some people might say late in the game you got the win everything's in hand be a little bit conservative or you just say I'm just going to keep doing me and what I do with this offense is throw the football all over the yard and I'm going to try to win me a big trophy at the end of the year just discarding tackers punching and grinding his way to the 23 they've got a lead here in the fourth quarter and there's certainly still plenty of football to go but this is where you'd love to control the flow of the game right you want to dictate everything to the defense and you do that by running the football that was a really nice run this offensive line is firing off late looks like they're getting stronger as the game goes on and that is a good sign for the offense they get him on the ground but not before he gets enough for the first down everything going the offense's way they're trying to ice this game late they've got a really nice lead so you just want to run the ball high percentage throws and keep the chains moving and they're doing that this has been a beautiful drive to watch offense continues to stay in a nice rhm here late from the gun the ground game they'll pick up four second and Six coming going to work in the Red Zone they can pick up the first down without getting it into the end zone dropping back it's Stone he's got it down the middle they make the stop at the 5 yd line but they've got it first and goal this offense is not letting up guys they've got a lead here late and they are still taking shots they're still looking for explosive plays this defense just has not had an answer here all game long and the Mustangs have it in scoring position on first and [Applause] goal they'll go to the air and the quarterback caught up two and sacked at the 12 and for quarterbacks throwing the ball down this close to the goal line because there's so many bodies in such a small space often times routes take a little bit longer to develop and it forces quarterbacks to have to hold on to it a little bit longer that's the risk in danger with throwing the ball so close to the goal line you might get sacked defense rose up deep in its own end on that last play now a second and long coming he's looking to throw gets it out fast they go up top to get it down to the 5 yd line as they try to pay off this drive I love an offense that wants to stay aggressive even when you've got the lead late in a game like this right you still try to find your Playmakers and get them the ball in space and that is exactly what this offense is doing if they can pay off this third and goal opportunity man oh man those collars start getting a little tight across the way and will score touchdown SMU salt inter wound right late in the fourth quarter you can run the football run this game out no sir I'm going to continue to pad my stats find my receiver out wide and give me another touchdown ready to try the point after and the extra point splits the uprights and they're up a full three touchdowns a 21-point cushion in the fourth just about set to kick it away he'll bring it back from inside is five nice job executing all the assignments as they put a stop to that return at the 22 Nevada takes over as the offense returns to the field they Unleashed an aerial assault last time that took them right to the end zone David So Reese with that drive I think you've accomplished something you wanted to accomplish make this defense think you put them back on their heels now shoot Palmer you might be able to slip a few runs in on this drive to really Jack them up yeah I like that idea but I also like the fact that speed kills and they've got it at the receiver position so you you got one-on-one matchups man take advantage Lewis to throw unloads to the wide out makes the grab he's run out of bounds but not before turning in a big pick up and moving the sticks for a first down you know you're seeing in college football now with spread offense and Tempo and air raid we're seeing more and more 400 yard days but I can't remember the last time I've seen one look as impressive as this guy has played today David he has been on fire and it's so annoying now because all the quick quick game is so good and then you take shots when you get matchups and you see tight ends now that that move like wide receivers and running backs that move like receivers there's so many ways that quarterbacks can hurt you now and he showed all of it today after picking up a couple at second and eight he's looking to throw he got his hands on it but couldn't hold on to it and what a time that would have been for their first pick of the game it's a nice adjustment by the defense here with a big lead in the game you're putting extra DBS on the field knowing the offense has to throw to get back in this one in the fourth quarter so your best cover guys on the field and they force an incompletion on the last one got quite a ways to go to keep this drive going it's third down from the 45 throws to the wide out and this is going to be incomplete on third down well they take a shot down the field it's another incompletion it's really been that kind of story this defense has made this guy earn it every single play really small Windows to throw into one touchdown pass that's a little bit surprising you thought maybe they'd have more in this game down by multiple possessions you can't come up empty on this drive they'll go for it on fourth down he'll pull it down and run at the 45 on his and he gives himself up but not before he moves those sticks you know QBs want to make those big plays they want to they want to put up the big stats but when nothing's there sometimes you just tuck the ball get a minimal gain I like the slide by the way too get down and don't take a big hit this Nevada offense really has it going Ming keeping they'll run it from the gun not a whole lot of room as he gets a couple inside the 30 to the 29 and the defense doing a great job committing to the run when you commit to the run like this obviously you can give up some plays in the passing game but you got to stop the run first picked up two yards on that last one they need eight on second down On The Run it's Maz able to pick up a couple down to the 27 ball spotted at the 27 they're facing a third and long to try to keep their hopes of a touchdown alive Lewis wants to escapes the pressure going right oh it's out and the defense has it everybody reverse skate and he's brought down and this defense gets the ball back for its own everything broke down the quarterback tried to bail them out but he ended up making things worse when he fumbled yeah I like the quarterback and his athleticism extending the play and at least giving himself a chance but you got to finish you still have to do a good job taking care of the football that's priority number one wasn't able to do that here's the handoff and he'll get it up to the 38 it'll be a first down big reason why his team has the lead right now late is because of his performance running the football well over a 100 yards in this game they knew that they were going to have to really put a lot of pressure on him he'd have to shoulder the load and he has delivered for his offense all game long wide out in motion quick pass on the jet motion really nice stop there from this senior leader and these little touch passes man they're just the easiest completions ever for quarterbacks Palmer I bet you would have loved being able to just Flip It Forward that counts as to your completion percentage which is good and then it's all run after the catch so pretty easy for a QB you wouldn't have been the only All-American in this booth David if I were allowed to put have Push passes when I was playing quarterback I'll tell you that it is so hard to defend it's so hard to seal that edge especially guy's Full Speed Ahead coming around theide oh what a big play for this offense as they get it to the 33 yd line man sometimes it just gets frustrating and you've just been beat down all day this defense hasn't had answers but now you can't let him run the football and just run it down your throat and be physical this defense has to do something different and find a way to make something happen the Mustangs come to the line with a fresh set of downs the give and tick tick tick tick tick tick tick stop is made at the 22 a 10yd pickup and a first down just outside the Red Zone yeah it's make or break time for this defense now they got to get a stop and if that's bringing more bodies in bringing more beef in they're running the football right up the gut right at you they're not going to throw the football in this situation time to be more physical and get this big [Applause] stop the give to the back he's brought down but not before they pick up the big first down and this is exactly what you want to do when you're on offense you have the lead you want to chew the clock keep the ball on the ground keep that thing just ticking Palmer they're just imposing their will David and that's something that we've seen I think all game up front they've been the more physical team they're the ones that's getting pushed and that's getting movement and it's carrying over all the way here deep into the fourth quarter a first down run on the doorstep and the defense wrestles him to the ground and the defense is still fighting they they haven't had the day that they dreamed of you know talking to the coaches coming into the game like they thought they had a good plan they'd be ready to attack and and and limit some of the damage this offense has done they haven't done it today though they got to go back to the drawing board figure some things out because this wasn't a great day the run up the middle trying to power to the goal line he'll be brought down at the 5 yd line and this defense is on its heels and I'm a fan of this man run the football eat the clock we got the lead this offense has put together a nice day man like just balance Rhythm timing play calling everything has worked that's why they've built this lead they've had a great day today trying to push their way into the End Zone on Third and goal goal tripped up for the tackle and down here near the goal line you got to be physical and this guy's proven it today Palmer they've given it to him he's put it in the end zone twice already I'm going to keep featuring him so you know the defense is going to be keying him too right because he's hurting him a little bit in this game already they're going to be finding a way to try to get some penetration anticipating this guy to touch it again for for for
