Kong in one of those toppling skyscrapers scen so beloved in disaster movies but these alien crafts are only armed at a level that makes their battle with us warships more or less a standoff why would the US Fleet conveniently already be near the Splashdown point it's involved in war games with allies such as Japan which provides an excuse for a Japanese officer to take temporary command of one of our ships and thus boost the grosses of battleship in Asia it's also handy that the aliens create a force field that forms an impenetrable barrier around their craft which seals in three us ships locks out all other ships and explains why our Jets don't simply nuke the so the 14 scariest mythological monsters in horror movies of course in the old be movie tradition our response to the alien visit is immediately military there's not one word of discussion about the aliens possibly just making a social call we invite them they come and we open fire this despite the fact that they're remarkably humanoid when we finally remove the helmet from one alien space suit he turns out to look alarmingly like James Carville in the setup we meet a shiftless Beach Bum named Alex Hopper Taylor levitates from the ocean depths as large as a skyscraper and bristling with ominous protrusions you got to say it takes real nerve for a Communications officer Rihanna and two seamen to speed over to it in a rubber boat armed with just a machine gun in a parallel story we learn Samantha is a physical therapist working with the Army vet mck Canal's real life Iraq hero Gregory D Gadson he takes him on a hike up the mountain side where the big NASA radio dishes are located they meet the nerd and much depends on preventing the aliens from phoning home in the Pentagon Situation Room officials fret there's the obligatory Montage of cable news reports on the Alien Invasion and the US destroyers exchange fire with the aliens two ships are destroyed including the one commanded by Stone and after several officers on Alex's ship die he turns out to be next in command and becomes the captain of the surviving US Destroyer so that's convenient the characters we met at the beginning all become the key players battleship is based on the Hasbro board game of the same name unplayed by me you get a sense of that when radar doesn't work and Rihanna figures out a way to deduce the underwater movements of the alien craft by tracking wave patterns on a grid with oldfashioned weather boys the film eventually comes down to lots of scenes in which things get blowed up real good one alien weapon is is especially fearsome a large metal ball with spikes which rolls through things and flattens them were less sophisticated versions of this used in medieval times may be made of flaming tar balls the film is in the tradition of the Transformers movies also based on Hasbro games and you get the feeling that Hasbro showed director Peter Berg and Michael Bay movies and told him to go and do likewise to his credit battleship is a more entertaining film than the Transformers titles because it has slightly more fully fleshed characters a better plot and a lot of naval combat strategy the work of Gregory D Gadson as the disabled vet is especially effective he has a Fierce screen presence Banna is as convincing as the character allows and Taylor kit makes a sturdy if predictable hero but the nicest touch is that Battleship has an honest to God third act instead of just settling for Non-Stop fireballs and explosions as ba likes to do I don't want to spoil it for you let's say the greatest Generation still has the right stuff in leave it at that is the board game Battleship still popular or is it retro now is making a movie of the game marketable more to adults who used to play the game as opposed to Children kids play video games no this is probably why the movie Battleship based on a board game looks and acts like a video game so let's say I am the demographic for this film well I did not care for a battleship one of the loudest movies I've ever seen now I'm going to attempt something never done before and something that should not be done without supervision I'm going to reference Shakespeare when speaking of Battleship but this movie was a tale told by an idiot full of Sound and Fury signifying nothing Battleship thighs was an 80s movie with 2012 special effects as the simple naval war game strategies of the game are expanded to now include an Intergalactic battle aliens yes aliens have received a message from NASA and come to attack the Hawaii area and set up a communication platform to communicate with their home planet and invite all of their friends to come come kill us standing in their way battleships and destroyers and aircraft carriers but no submarine surprisingly they did refer to the source material right down to the shape of the alien bombs they look like the little white pegs you play the board game with my favorite scene was actually a full-on board game reference at one point the battleships are trying to track down the alien ships without radar so they map out the ocean using weather boys and then fire into the nothingness hoping to hit their target that's just like the game and it was was creative and clever and suspenseful made me think none of that out of space stuff was necessary and you know what none of that out of space stuff was necessary the score was from Steve jablonsky who did the score for Transformers and it really feels like he didn't write another score here he just took the Transformers score and spaced it out accordingly so it would time out perfectly to enhance the action in this movie too but you got to admire the idea of working once and stretching as much use and money out of your work as possible fake m Dem on there's a blonde guy in this movie that we call fake Matt Damon his name is Jesse plens and he was on Friday Night Lights and here he plays a crewmate on the earth John Paul Jones his character doesn't do as much as Matt Damon would therefore you don't need Matt Damon so I thought the idea of getting a cheaper Faker Matt Damon was a good call and there's also a fake Ving RS real life double amput Gregory D Gadson plays an army vet who finds his way into the battle to save the world and he has that stoneface marcelus Wallace had in Pulp Fiction and the low emotionless draw too he's kind of the guy who they go to to describe the plot he says things like you've got to go down to that Command Center and retrieve the communicator and you're going to drive this car now just in case seeing everything that was happening in the movie wasn't enough for the viewer fear not fake thing Reigns is here to explain it all for you too battleships Lim niss overall the action is I don't know trying so hard that it loses impact EXP iions become so commonplace they grow stale and routine and the actors don't do much to make this an actor's movie their MO is just stay out of the way of the special effects please thank you I'm still rooting for Taylor kit to be a great leading man he underplayed John Carter very well I thought but he doesn't do much to shake any opinions of him that he's just a stonos surfer type with exotic good looks Liam n's collecting a paycheck and Brooklyn Deca was sorely underused and that can't be said about every model turned out she's very funny and What to Expect When You're Expecting but the Lost image of her in Battleship sums up her role here they literally turned on the fan and the slow-mo to accentuate her beauty she's got comedy skills and I hope they get used more than propping her up in Michael Bay wastelands as the pretty girl I'm talking to you Megan Fox battleship is one of my most anticipated films of the year after I have first watched its Trail a few months ago finally I get to watch it today after it has been released to the cinema many days or already battleship is a science fiction naval war film not against a particular country but on a group of extraterrestrial robotic Ships coming down to the sea from a planet far far away that the Earth is trying to communicate with uh I'm glad this movie is released earlier in Malaysia as it is supposed to be released in United States on May boom boom boom I hear a lot of gigantic explosions from this film those explosions and firing scenes from this film are epic that is the single aspect throughout the entire film that worked well and brings the movie to quite a success it's really very exciting seeing those ships either of the Navy or of the alien ships exploding after being hit by multiple attacks it hits the audiences and got us concentrated on the battle once it is started yes the climax started once the battle began the beginning part that emphasizes on characters development was quite boring I keep waiting for the battle to comes which looks very promising even from its trailer already ah I am not disappointed the battle which covers almost 3/4s of the whole film really impressed me the state-of-the-art stunning Visual and seamless CGI effects are very amazing and made everything looks very realistic event though I believe some explosions are a bit too exaggerated but I like it the volume is very high but it actually adds to the excitement further the actor who portrayed as the main character Alex Hooper in this film performed quite well in the film same goes to others oh wait the lead actor is Taylor kit he looks better in short hair on this film than his previous appearance in long hair on John Carter however as for Rihanna a famous singer nowadays who made her debut into film appearance on this I find she could not fit well into the whole thing she would be better if remained only in singing career I finds the movie goes weird whenever she was there in the midst of many breathtaking scenes well the plot is quite straightforward which made the whole story easy to understand but I detected some plot holes but I'm sure people going in there for this movie with their mind mostly on the extreme firing and exploding scenes only sorry to Michael baay there is someone out there who could challenge you easily on producing this kind of robotic battle in film out of 10 points I rate this movie a total of 76 an extreme and explosive movie of 2 hours long that would certainly satisfies people who like this sort of theme you would certainly be overwhelmed once the battle begins this movie reminded me of Pearl Harbor another movie many years ago but this one is far better when comparing to on the quality of the battle SH now I wish to watch the battle from this Battleship again proportional strategy and luck are required to win Battleship the family board game Peter burs loudly proudly ridiculous soldiers vs Aliens Blockbuster rather fancifully claims as its source as played by Taylor Kit's beefy Navy Lieutenant however Victory requires no such Nici just the biggest explosives the military can provide over long and underwritten even by the standards of Summer FX extravaganzas this Battleship will nonetheless float with many on the strength of its boyish eager to please razzled Dazzle Bowing in Europe a month before its Us opening P should perform robustly enough to Greenlight the sequel patently set up by its post credit sting having already parlayed its belov GI Joe and Transformers action figures into hit Hollywood franchises toy manufacturing giant Hasbro has now turned its attention to its classic board game collection on the surface the idea isn't as silly as it seems a board game after all has more of a built-in narrative structure than a doll though battleships mishit sync trajectory perhaps tells a simpler story than most certainly a lot of ships get sunk in fraternal increasing Sound and Fury until an abruptly curtailed finale the comparatively limp Mainland action meanwhile find Samantha weathering a storm with paraplegic Army veteran Mick real life Iraq hero Gregory D Gadson and Technical geek K heish linklater who devises a way to break the aliens communication wall I've got a bad feeling about this mutters Alex a veritable Cassandra of the high seas and that's after two Destroyer ships have already been blown to smithin bright enough to quote Homer back at his commanding officer but dim enough to think the Japanese wrote The Art of War he's too blandly inscrutable a hero to root for with much enthus enthusiasm which goes for most of the characters the exception is DECA Samantha who's so unctuously inexpressive we might actively root for her demise under one of the enemy's flaming razor balls the aliens encased in marketly Power Ranger likee suits are no more defined in personality or motivation making it rather easy to sit back and enjoy the fireworks without taking sides any more than one would while observing say a game of Battleship between two strangers maybe there's something to the screenwriters claims after all the attractive cast does no more than Berg and the script require which is very little indeed after John Carter kit is still waiting for a film vehicle to make good on the easy authentic charm he exhibits in TV's Friday Night Lights though he's physically up to the task here fans at pop meast star Rihanna making her film debut will be disappointed to find that the role of Rees may as well be renamed young female demographic for all the pertinence it has to the narrative but she's a Sparky enough presence Tech credits are all polished if not as metallically Sleek as they would be with a Michael Bay style Craftsman at the helm Tobias scher's lensing covers the teal and orange pallet seemingly mandatory for such Adventures these days while Steve jablonsky score thumps and drones away with naria paws little betraying the presence of rock super producer Rick Rubin and Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom morlo on the music team the bulk of the attention in this evidently expensive production has been lavished on industrial Light and Magic's typically Immaculate effects which are firmly in the Transformers mold stylistically with the added challenge of water simulation that such state-of-the-art Creations have been used to realize a story whose climax hinges on a True Life WW2 Battleship us Missouri outlasting its newer shiny arrivals is an irony probably lost on all involved you sank my sense of logic battleship is one of those movies that you go in knowing it's not going to be revolutionary but you hope it will at least be a fun summer popcorn flick you'll hear people say things like just shut your brain off and enjoy the problem is I'm tired of shutting my brain off if that's a perquisite to watching a movie that's never a good sign I'm sure you're thinking I'm getting old and cranky and that like other critics I have no soul but I'm getting tired of lazy ass movies that simply try to flash a bunch of explosions and images on screen to distract you from the fact that there really isn't anything going on it's all the typical things that Michael Bay does but somehow it ends up being even worse I've heard a lot of comparisons to Skyline and I'd say that's pretty accurate as far as both movies being about alien invasions don't make any sense as you may have already guessed I didn't like Battleship this review is going to be a little more of a rant and spoiler field so fair warning where to even start the movie begins with showing you that NASA has found an exoplanet In the goldilock Zone on the hope that there may be life there a signal is transmitted boosted by a satellite in orbit I'm already kind of scratching my head at this because lots of exoplanets have been found in the goldilock zone this isn't n anything new so why are we transmitting to this planet are we doing this for all planets we find is this why NASA needs more money let's get the first floor major floor of this movie out of the way it's way too long it's well over 2 hours yet you can walk in 30 minutes late and you won't miss anything related to the action you're introduced to our hero a drunk Alex Hopper Taylor kit who breaks into a convenience store to steal a chicken burrito for Sam Brooklyn Decker this scene would have been funny if it wasn't a blatant ripoff of an actual burglary here's the clip of the actual event they reenact this in the movie as if it was something original this is the kind of crap I expect to see in something from the makers of Epic movie anyway this scene is used to set up that Alex is an underachieving loser that's a disappointment to his older brother Alexander Skarsgard who is in the Navy he forces Alex to enlist in order to get his act straight we fast forward a few years and I can only assume it's been a few years because it's never said how much time has passed and nobody looks any older but Alex is now somehow a lieutenant I say somehow because it's clear that he's still a screw-up and he's about to get kicked out of the Navy his last mission will be for the rim pack Naval exercises and then he's out oh but before we get to that we're going to watch a soccer match yes you came to watch Battleship because you wanted to see a poorly shot soccer match between the US and Japanese Navy there's no point to this sequence other than to show you that Alex doesn't get along with one of the guys from the Japanese Navy do you think they'll be forced to work together and respect each other by the end of the movie oh the suspense anyway this is seriously the first 30 40 MOS of the film and it didn't need to be there you can skip that first part and there's 30 40 minutes of your life you just got back if you wanted to establish Alex's character it would have been much easier and taken less time to Simply start with him already in the military and show that he's the underachieving officer who's about to be kicked out of the military for fighting or something like that it's a much harder cell to show him as an absolute screw-up even before enlisting and then in just a short time he's Advanced without seeing any character growth or maturity they tell you several times that Alex is smart and talented but you never see him do anything that demonstrates that finally the aliens show up as the Navy is going through their Rim pack exercises one of their ships is damaged entering Earth's atmosphere and causes all kinds of Destruction as it crashes these aliens can travel light years but I guess they don't have the ability to detect a satellite that's in its direct flight path and anyway they Navy investigates the ships that have safely landed in the ocean shortly after the aliens attack the other huge problem is aliens themselves they aren't developed at all what do they want it's clear they are invading but why they don't have a single line of dialogue so there's never a mention about needing resources or Tech biology or just wanting our planet their primary goal seems to be that they need to reestablish communication back home because it's assumed that their communication ship is the one that crashed earlier that's sets up a silly subplot involving Sam and a military veteran trying to stop them it's silly not just because of the characters involved D but because it's ultimately pointless we communicated with the aliens first that's how they knew to find us if they were capable of sending five ships to Earth what's to stop them from sending five more or 20 if they never hear back from their ships you don't think at some point they aren't sending more to investigate one of the worst things about the aliens is that they show that they have this threat assessment display that determines whether or not they will attack or even see you so basically in Battleship you can shoot an alien but then stand still and put your gun down and there's a good chance it will ignore you this happened several times in the film never mind that they are invading the Earth for whatever reason and they're in the middle of a battle against people who have clearly fired upon them also the alien showed at other times that they had no issues with causing random destruction that affected civilian targets that pose no threat Battleship doesn't worry about things like logic or making sense their ship design was actually kind of cool though but again there didn't seem to be any consistency to their technology you see times where their ships will fly in other times where they hop around in the water as if they can't sustain flight the actual alien design was kind of silly when the masks finally come off they have fraking goatees yep spiky goatees even aliens have hipsters Battleship has some of the worst dialogue I've seen in a while co-written by Eric and John hober this movie badly needed some punch-up Peter Berg is a capable director but it doesn't seem like he had a lot of control over this I have a hard time believing he thought some of the stuff that happens in the movie made any sense how did anyone involved in this think it made any sense there are so many things in the movie that could have been removed like there's a really bad CG shot of a great white shark swimming that looked awful but it had nothing to do with the story why put that in the movie there's a point in the movie where they actually play a version of Battleship staring at display screens as the Navy and Aliens try to find each other really there are two moments in the film where someone presumably dies and there is absolutely no reaction from the witnessing character even though it's someone they care about if you don't care about your characters to show any emotion about them I don't care about them either maybe this is due to hiring actors incapable of expressing these types of emotions I don't want hate on Taylor kit but this is already the second shitty SCI fantasy movie he's been in this year I get the feeling Hollywood is trying to force this guy on Jeremy Rena was originally attached to this role and he wisely passed on it to be in something else Rihanna doesn't have much to do in the movie other than to run in needless slow motion she wasn't terrible but they did a good job of hiding her acting they just throw Brooklyn Decker in some tank tops and short shorts and then her acting consists of either smiling or making a face like she just smelled a fart movie review Lieutenant Alex Hopper has a lot going for him he can quote Homer he's got a jaw that even Matt would envy he plays a mean game of soccer he also sometimes acts like an idiot now I'm not saying that to be cruel it's not like Alex is a metal Terrier shy of a Monopoly board I did after all mention his knowledge of Homer but Alex clearly could use a little help in his decision-making skills let's pretend for a minute that you're Alex with your fine chin and Homer filled mind a pretty girl sits next to you in a bar and mentions she has a hankering for a chicken burrito do you ignore her be offered to tell take her out to a nice Mexican restaurant sometime or see break into the convenience store next door and grab her one right away running away from taser wielding police as you do so now pretend you're playing soccer and get smacked in the face triggering a penalty kick you see stars and birds float cartoon-like around your head then you'll allow someone else to make the penalty kick for you be skipped down to positive elements because you're tired of this illustration or see disobey the team captain your own brother threaten the potential substitute kicker with dead and insist on taking the kick yourself with Alex the answer is usually C you've got skills an exasperated Admiral tells him but I've never seen anyone waste them like you even when strange alien craft land in the Pacific next to Hawaii Alex makes a series of sea style moves that indirectly get several people killed two boats blown up and perhaps trigger what scientists call an extinction level event so when mounting casualties Force Alex to take command of a battered Destroyer perhaps the last real barrier standing standing between humanity and the aliens his new crew seems less than inspired they know of Alex's pension for c answers and many of them seem on the verge of grabbing him by the lapels and shaking him until his nice square jaw starts flapping around what's wrong with you they might H do you think this is some sort of game ah yeah about that positive elements not one character ever declares you sank my battleship but I guess I can still give the film a little credit Alex's decision making skills do improve as the movie wears on he and a bitter rival unite to fight a common enemy he shows humility by temporarily relinquishing his captaincy to someone with more experience and a good idea he shows creativity and heroism on this watery field of battle and I don't think this is a big spoiler eventually Saves the World in fact by the end of Battleship it would appear that Alex might start picking a few bees in the future instead of all se's a bevy of old old Sailors pop up from nowhere and chip in when the chips are down it's as if they were all held in a glass case labeled with a sign in case of alien attack break glass a soldier who lost his legs during the war realizes he still has plenty to offer his country several men and women show a great deal of Courage under extraordinarily trying circumstances spiritual elements a ship Bears the slogan In God We Trust all others we track Alex's girlfriend Sam utters a heartfelt thank God when she realizes her bow is okay sexual content Sam's wardrobe consists largely of tight fitting chest accentuating Garb dresses and tank tops her modesty is particularly obvious during a nighttime Beach Rendevous with Alex wearing a tiny white top and minuscule jean shorts she straddles Alex while encouraging him to ask her father for permission to marry the two kiss passionately there and elsewhere violent content Battleship of course is Loosely very very very very Loosely based on the popular Hasbro game of the same title and obviously that classic game was built on the idea of implied destruction if your ship fills up with red pegs it sinks metaphorically into the imaginary bottomless plastic depths the only real violence involved is when you get upset enough at losing that you fling a sunk boat across the family room on screen Battleship requires no such Flights of Fancy or even Fury to generate its violence multiple ships both human and alien are sunk almost always accompanied by massive explosions and eardrum rending noise alien shells embed themselves in in hulls and then explode ripping boats apart we see scrap metal fly and wreckage sink dragging dozens perhaps hundreds of people Into the Depths a sonic boom blows out windows and makes the faces of sailors shake like jello molds but perhaps the most fearsome weapon in the alien Arsenal is the metallic spinning yo-yo of death the edges of which tear through metal cutting through an entire ship sinking it in concrete causing part of a freeway to collapse sending several cars crashing into a gaping Chasm and if something escapes Apes the yo-yo's toothy clutches as a helicopter nearly does the thing whips out a blade and crusted whipped to finish the job even when the alien ships crash they're deadly one hits a satellite on the way into the atmosphere breaking apart as it descends a chunk smashes into a hong Hong skyscraper sending the building tumbling and providing an uncomfortable reminder of 911 in news footage we see wreckage and ruins on fire and fleeting riots in the streets we hear that 25,000 people have been killed but for all that destruction the aliens seem bizarrely averse to unnecessary Bloodshed their equipment doesn't seem to Target anything that isn't immediately threatening and in the beginning they never shoot anything until it shoots at them while the body count is undeniably high the movie rarely shows much blood Beyond lacerated and bruised faces we do see countless injured people strewn about ship decks or being taken to infirmaries the aliens engage in fist fights with humans they destroy two police Jeeps tearing them apart and leaving the resulting corpses in the wreckage Alex falls hard on his back while breaking into a convenience store he's tasered twice and the next morning his back Bears the marks crude or profane language two F words are abbreviated by way of loud explosions we also hear just over a dozen's words somewhat milder exclamations tally in at around 30 and include a DNH h b c and Bard God's name is abused nearly 10 times once connected to a DN drug and alcohol content the first time we see Alex he's in a bar for his birthday drinking shots and beer with stone his brother other negative elements Alex picks fights with people and breaks into a convenience store he leaves money to pay for the burrito but presumably not for the damage he caused as the crews for armadas from different countries are announced as part of a multinational Naval exercise a sailor lightly mocks them under his breath someone mistakes a legless man for a cyborg Alex said says that asking Sam's father for his permission to marry her is an obsolete tradition conclusion Battleship shares some similarities with our good Lieutenant Alex it's big it's bombastic it's slick looking and it can feel really really dumb at times but it also knows a bit of Homer and by that I mean it has the wisdom to know what it is and what it isn't this is not a movie that aspires to be an Oscar Contender its only ambition is to keep audiences entertained and eating pricey popcorn for a couple of hours by those limited standards battleship is not abysmal and in its own cacophonous way it offers some pretty nice thoughts it's great to see for instance such a positive portrayal of the American Military working with an assist from an ally or two and living at a time when most films suggest that you have to be young and handsome to do anything worthwhile it's great to see a bunch of tough as nail 70 and 80-year-old men do their part to save the world Alex and his sibling have clear affection for each other and even when Alex strains the relation relationship to the breaking point Stone's belief in his brother remains steadfast so this flick won't strain anyone's brain but it may spark a bit of inspiration which isn't necessarily reason enough to throw the fam in the van and drive to the nearest Multiplex the violence is non-stop foul language is an issue and there's a scene or two of sensuality I won't flat out tell you whether or not you should see Battleship all I'm saying here is to be prepared the rest of the world and jamming all radar and Comm Communications inside three alien warships surface in open fire Mick is destroyed Samson is lost with all hands including Stone and John Paul Jones command crew are killed leaving Alex to reluctantly assume command as the highest ranking sailor on board John Paul Jones disengages to recover mixed survivors including Captain Yugi nagada while alien drones destroy oahu's military bases hiking near the communications array Sam and retired as Army Lieutenant Colonel and double amput mck canals discover the aliens presence they encounter scientist Cal Zapata who reveals the aliens have taken over the array to reestablish Communications with their home planet the John Paul Jones crew captures an alien which telepathically links with Alex revealing their history of conquering worlds more aliens board and retrieve their comrade while one starts sabotaging the ship its armored suit proves impervious to Small Arms fire but is obliterated by the destroyer's 5-in gun and the captured aliens helmet reveals their eyes are sensitive to sunlight assure Sam Mick and Zapata recover his Spectrum analyzer using it to radio John Paul Jones that the aliens will contact their planet and most likely call for reinforcements when the facility satellite is in position in 4 hours as nightfalls Captain Nagata suggests using the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Noah tsunami warning Boys around Hawaii to track the warships without radar this plan works and allows John Paul Jones to destroy two of them the bird proves too elusive so they lure it into Facing East as the sun rises Alex and meata shoot out its Bridge windows with sniper rifles blinding its crew with sunlight and allowing John Paul Jones to destroy it the Destroyer then attempts to Target the communications array but is sunk by drones launched from the alien structure admitting the force field Alex Nagata and several other Sailors barely escape the survivors Commander the decommissioned World War human 2 Battleship us Missouri with the aid of retired Navy veterans the floating structure is revealed to be a giant Mother Ship but Missouri disables the force field allowing Admiral Shane to scramble fighter jets from the aircraft carrier us Ronald Reagan the battles ship's turret carrying the ship's last shell is disabled forcing the sailors to carry the shell to the ship's last functioning turret Sam Mick and Cal stole the aliens at the array where Mick kills an alien Soldier Alex uses the final shell to destroy the array rendering the Missouri defenseless but the mother ship's drones are destroyed by boing far 18 fighter jets as reinforcements carpet bomb the Mother Ship eliminating the alien threat Alex is promoted to Lieutenant Commander and presented with a silver star and his brother's postumus Navy cross Admiral Shane promises Alex will soon have a ship of his own while he is also recommended to become a Navy SEAL Alex as a sailor 16 in an interview with GQ Berg explained how he came up with the idea to cast her he realized she could act after her appearance on Saturday Night Live 17 she accepted the role because she wanted to do something badass and also because it wasn't a role too big for her to play 18 tatano buano also has a role in the film as the commander of a Japanese con class destroyer double amput plens I know that he's really good for Taylor and he makes Taylor better so I wrote that whole part for Jessie he added I never thought of it as a Friday Night Lights reunion I thought of it as protection bringing a trusted family member in 21 US Navy sailors were used as extras in various parts of this film Sailors from assorted commands in Navy region Hawaii assisted with line handling to take Missouri in and out of port for a day of shooting in mid 2010 a few months later the production team put out a casting call for Sailors stationed at various sea commands at Naval Station mport Florida to serve as extra 22 Sailors were also taken from various ships stationed at Naval Station mapol Jacksonville Florida namely y h City Y Carney and us vickburg were some of the ships that and often times they take two or three jobs at the same time they're difficult and pretentious and they're tormented artists I'm not going to name names but most of them are one guy who isn't is Hans Zimmer who taught Steve jablonsky we had a couple of meetings and I came up with this idea the day I met with him I had had an MRI for my neck and they make that really scary sound I was like I just had this MRI and when I was in there I was thinking about the aliens and it was really scary and he was like oh that's awesome he went and recorded emeris and made music out of emis and that's the theme of the aliens in our film he is no drama and just goes and gets it done the score is big and awesome and scary and driving at times it's very simple and acoustic and touching and emotional he's the best I've ever worked with 24 all tracks are written by Steve jablonsky except where noted the film was originally planned to be released in 2011 but was res scheduled to May 18th 2012 in the it's not a whole lot of fun 48 Peter Travis of Rolling Stone gave the film one out of four stars and he commented battleship is all noise and crashing metal sinking to the shallows of Michael Bay's Armageddon and then digging to the brain extinction level of the Transformers Trilogy 49 other critics were less harsh for Battleship writing for time Steven James Snyder was somewhat positive because he had low expectations of the film he wrote The Creative team behind this ocean bound Thriller decided to fill the narrative black hole with a few ingredients all but absent from today's summer tent poles namely mystery Nostalgia and a healthy dose of humility and described it as an unlikely mix of Independence Day Pearl Harbor Jurassic Park and The Hunt for Red October 50 giving it a B+ grade Lisa schwarb of Entertainment Weekly said for every line of how dialogue that should have been sunk there's a nice little scene in which humans have to make a difficult decision for every stretch of generic sci-fi via CGI movie making there's a welcome bit of wit 51 The Washington Post gave the film a three star rating out of four commenting it is an invigor blast of cinematic adrenaline 52 Roger ebber of the Chicago Sun Times gave the film two five stars out of four praising the climax as an honest to God third act instead of just settling for Non-Stop fireballs and explosions as ba likes to do I don't want to spoil it for you let's say the greatest Generation still has the right stuff and leave it at that 53 film review this could be like Columbus and the Indians a nerdy radio astronomer worries except where the Indians from a powerful transmission facility in Hawaii he supervised the transmission of a signal to the Earth like Planet G in another galaxy and in no time at all aliens come calling considering that they arrive in weeks they must have discovered faster than light speeds so it's a little strange that when they arrive they're strictly analog their vast warships splash down in the Pacific except for fragments that devastate Hong Kong in one of those toppling skyscrapers scenes so beloved in disaster movies but these alien crafts are only armed at a level that makes their battle with us warships more or less a standoff why would the US Fleet conveniently already be near the splash down point it's involved in war games with allies such as Japan which provides an excuse for a Japanese officer to take temporary command of one of our ships and thus boost the grosses of battleship in Asia it's also handy that the aliens create a force field that forms an impenetrable barrier around their craft which seals in three us ships locks out all other ships and explains why our Jets don't simply nuke the saw the 14 scariest mythological monsters in horror movies of course in the old B movie tradition our response to the alien visit is immediately military there's not one word of discussion about the aliens possibly just making a social call we invite them they come and we open fire this despite the fact that they're remarkably humanoid when we finally remove the helmet from one alien space suit he turns out to look alarmingly like James Carville in the setup we we meet a shiftless Beach Bum named Alex Hopper Taylor kitch whose brother Stone Alexander Skarsgard is a naval officer in a bar Alex hits on the liome Samantha Shane Brooklyn Decker who wouldn't you know is the daughter of the admiral of the fleet Liam niss breaking into a convenience store to get her a burrito Alex is arrested and his brother delivers an ultimatum join the Navy or else meanwhile the nerdy Cal Hamish linklater supervises transmission of the signal to Planet G and in no more time than it takes to get Alex to uniform and on board a US Destroyer five alien spacecraft enter our solar system in tight formation one alien craft then levitates from the ocean depths as large as a skyscraper and bristling with ominous protrusions you got to say it takes real nerve for a Communications officer Rihanna and two seen to speed over to it in a rubber boat armed with just a machine gun in a parallel story we learned Samantha is a physical therapist working with the Army vet MC Canal's real life Iraq hero Gregory D Gadson she takes him on a hike up the mountain side where the big NASA radio dishes are located they meet the nerd and much depends on preventing the aliens from phoning home in the Pentagon Situation Room officials fret there's the obligatory Montage of cable news reports on the Alien Invasion and the US destroyers exchange fire with the aliens two ships are destroyed including the one commanded by Stone and after several officers on Alex's ship die he turns out to be next in command and becomes the captain of the surviving US Destroyer so that's convenient the characters we met at the beginning all become the key players battleship is based on a Hasbro board game of the same name unplayed by me you get a sense of that when radar doesn't work and Rihanna figures out a way to deduce the underwater movements of the alien craft by tracking wave patterns on a grid with oldfashioned weather boys the film eventually comes down to lots of scenes in which things get blowed up real good one alien weapon is especially fearsome a large metal ball with spikes which rolls through things and flattens them where less sophisticated versions of this used in medieval times may be made of flaming tar balls the film is in the tradition of the Transformers movies also based on Hasbro games and you get the feeling that Hasbro showed director Peter Berg and Michael Bay movies and told him to go and do likewise to his credit battleship is a more entertaining film than the Transformers titles because it has slightly more fully fleshed characters a better plot and a lot of Naval Combat strategy the work of Gregory D Gadson as the disabled vet is especially effective he has a fierce scream presence Ranna is as convincing as the character allows and Taylor kit makes a sturdy if predictable hero but the nicest touch is that Battleship as an honest to God third act instead of just settling for Non-Stop fireballs and now is making a movie of the game marketable more to adults who used to play the game as opposed to Children kids play video games no this is probably why the movie Battleship based on a board game looks and acts like a video game so let's say I am the demographic for this film well I did not care for a battleship one of the loudest movies I've ever seen now I'm going to attempt something never done before and something that should not be done without supervision I'm going to ref Shakespeare when speaking of Battleship but this movie was a tale told by an idiot full of Sound and Fury signifying nothing Battleship thighs was an 80s movie with 2012 special effects as the simple naval war game strategies of the game are expanded to now include an Intergalactic battle aliens yes aliens have received a message from NASA and come to attack the Hawaii area and set up a communication platform to communicate with their home planet and invite all of their friends to come kill us standing in their way battleships and destroyers and aircraft carriers but no submarine surprisingly they did refer to the source material right down to the shape of the alien bombs they look like the little white pegs you play the board game with my favorite scene was actually a full-on board game reference at one point the battleships are trying to track down the alien ships without radar so they map out the ocean using weather boys and then fire into the nothingness hoping to hit their target that's just like the game and it was creative and clever and suspenseful made me think none of that out of space stuff was necessary and you know what none of that out of space stuff was necessary the score was from Steve jablonsky who did the score for Transformers and it really feels like he didn't write another score here he just took the Transformers score and spaced it out accordingly so it would time out perfectly to enhance the action in this movie too but you got to admire the idea of working once and stretching as much use and money out of your work as possible fake Matt demon there's a blonde guy in this movie that we call fake Matt Damon his name is Jesse plens and he was on Friday Night Lights and here he plays a crewmate on the US John Paul Jones his character doesn't do as much as Matt Damon would therefore you don't need Matt Damon so I thought the idea of getting a cheaper Faker Matt Damon was a good call and there's also a fake Ving RS real life double amput Gregory D Gadson plays an army vet who finds his way into the battle to save the world and he has that stoneface marcelus Wallace had in p fiction and the low emotionless draw too he's kind of the guy who they go to to describe the plot he says things like you've got to go down to that Command Center and retrieve the communicator and you're going to drive this car now just in case seeing everything that was happening in the movie wasn't enough for the viewer fear not fake V Reigns is here to explain it all for you too battleships lamb niss overall the action is I don't know trying so hard that it loses impact explosions become so commonplace they grow St stale and routine and the actors don't do much to make this an actor's movie their Amo is just stay out of the way of the special effects please thank you I'm still rooting for Taylor kit to be a great leading man he underplayed John Carter very well I thought but he doesn't do much to shake any opinions of him that he's just a stonos surfer type with exotic good looks Liam n's collecting a paycheck and Brooklyn Deca was sorely underused and that can't be said about every model turned actress she's very funny and What to Expect When You're Expecting but the Lost image of her in Battleship sums up her role here they literally turned on the fan and the slow-mo to accentuate her beauty she's got comedy skills and I hope they get used more than propping her up in Michael Bay wastelands as the pretty girl I'm talking to you Megan Fox battleship is one of my most anticipated films of the year after I have first watched its Trail a few months ago finally I get to watch it today after it has been released to the cinema many days already battleship is a sign science fiction naval war film not against a particular country but on a group of extraterrestrial robotic Ships coming down to the sea from a planet far far away that the Earth is trying to communicate with ah I'm glad this movie is released earlier in Malaysia as it is supposed to be released in United States on May boom boom boom I hear a lot of gigantic explosions from this film those explosions and firing scenes from this film are epic that is the single aspect throughout the entire film that worked well and brings the movie to quite a success it's really very exciting seeing those ships either of the Navy or of the alien ships exploding after being hit by multiple attacks it hits the audiences and got us concentrated on the battle once it is started yes the climax started once the battle began the beginning part that emphasizes on character's development was quite boring I keep waiting for the battle to comes which looks very promising even from its trailer already ah I am not disappointed the battle which covers almost 3/4 of the whole film really impressed me the state-ofthe-art stunning Visual and seamless CGI effects are very amazing and made everything looks very realistic event though I believe some explosions are a bit too exaggerated but I like it the volume is very high but it actually adds to the excitement further the actor who portrayed as the main character Alex Hooper in this film performed quite well in the film same goes to others oh wait the lead actor is Taylor kitch he looks better in short hair on this film than his previous appearance in long hair on John Carter however as for Rihanna a famous singer nowadays who made her debut into film appearance on this I find she could not fit well into the whole thing she would be better if remained only in singing career I finds the movie goes weird whenever she was there in the midst of many breathtaking scenes well the plot is quite straightforward which made the whole story easy to understand but I detected some plot holes but I'm sure people going in there for this movie with their mind mostly on the extreme firing and and exploding scenes only sorry to Michael baay there is someone out there who could challenge you easily on producing this kind of robotic battle in film out of 10 points I rate this movie a total of 76 an extreme and explosive movie of 2 hours long that would certainly satisfies people who like this sort of theme you would certainly be overwhelmed once the battle begins this movie reminded me of Pearl Harbor another movie many years ago but this one is far better when comparing on the quality of the battle sh now I wish to watch the battle from this Battleship again proportional strategy and luck are required to win Battleship the family board game Peter bgs loudly proudly ridiculous soldiers vs Aliens Blockbuster rather fancifully claims as its source as played by Taylor Kit's beefy Navy Lieutenant however Victory requires no such niceties just the biggest explosives the military can provide over long and underwritten even by the standards of Summer FX extravaganzas this Battleship will nonetheless float with many on the strength of its boyish eager to please razzled Dazzle Bowing in Europe a month before its Us opening P should perform robustly enough to Greenlight the sequel patently set up by its post credit sting having already parlayed its beloved GI Joe and Transformers action figures into hit Hollywood franchises toy manufacturing giant Hasbro has now turned its attention to its classic board game collection on the surface the idea isn't as silly as it seems a board game after all has more of a built-in narrative structure than a doll though battleships mishit syn trajectory perhaps tells a simpler story than most certainly a lot of ships get sunk in fraternal writing Duo John and Eric hober screenplay though there the similarity ends there's Nar and in joke about the game to be found here indeed rather surprisingly coming from the writers of red attempts at hip humor are few and far between the film mostly lets the missiles do the talking the video player is currently playing an ad you can skip the ad in five SEC with a mouse or keyboard extended pre-credit sequence gets past its science with impressive haste we're here to play after all not to learn the need to knows are that a goldilock planet close enough to and Far Enough From the Sun in order to sustain life and therefore just R has been discovered by NASA in a separate Galaxy the inhabitants of Planet G have responded to scientists Interstellar Communications and decided to pay a visit to Earth cat to aahu Hawaii where jobless layabout Alex kit is celebrating his 26 birthday in a dive bar with disapproving older brother Stone Alexander Skarsgard a straight laac Navy recruit after Alex commits a drunken infraction designed to impress leggy physiotherapist Samantha Brooklyn Deca Stone issues a final straw demand Alex is to join him in the Navy in seemingly no time at all Alex has graduated to Lieutenant level despite equally feckless behavior in uniform and is in a serious relationship with Samantha whose Stern dad Lam niss just happens to be commander of the Pacific Fleet all principles are conveniently involved then when Planet G's alien spacecraft crashes into the Pacific and rises ominously from the depths near the naval base in aahu a reconnaissance mission led by Alex and Scrappy female officer re Rihanna aggravates the visitors into opening fire setting the stage for a protracted series of back and forth pyrotechnic attacks of increasing Sound and Fury until an abruptly Cil finale the comparatively limp Mainland action meanwhile find Samantha weathering the storm with parle Army veteran Mick real life Iraq hero Gregory D Gadson and Technical geek Cal heish linklater who devises a way to break the aliens communication wall I've got a bad feeling about this mutters Alex a veritable Cassandra of the high seas and that's after two Destroyer ships have already been blown to Smither bright enough to quote Homer back at his commanding officer but dim enough to think the Japanese wrote The Art of War he's too blandly inscrutable a hero to root for with much enthusiasm which goes for most of the characters the exception is DECA Samantha who's so unctuously inexpressive we might actively root for her demise under one of the enemy's flaming razor balls the aliens encased in marketly Power Ranger likee suits are no more defined in personality or motivation making it rather easy to sit back and enjoy the fireworks without taking sides any more than one would while observing say a game of Battleship between two strangers maybe there's something to the screenwriters claims after all the attractive cast does no more than Burg and the the script require which is very little indeed after John Carter kit is still waiting for a film vehicle to make good on the easy authentic charm he exhibits in TV's Friday Night Lights though he's physically up to the task here fans of pop meast star Rihanna making her film debut will be disappointed to find that the role of Rees may as well be renamed young female demographic for all the pertinence it has to the narrative but she's a Sparky enough presence Tech credits are all polished if not as metallically Sleek as they would be with a Michael Bay style Craftsman at the helm tobias's lensing covers the teal and orange pallet seemingly mandatory for such Adventures these days while Steve jablonsky score thumps and drones away with naria paws little betraying the presence of rock super producer Rick Rubin and Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom morlo on the music team the bulk of the attention in this evidently expensive production has been lavished on industrial Light and Magic's typically Immaculate effects which are firmly in the Transformers mold stylistically with the added challenge of water simulation that such state-of-the-art Creations have been used to realize a story whose climax hinges on a True Life WW2 Battleship us Missouri outlasting its newer shiny arrivals is an irony probably lost on all involved you sank my sense of logic battleship is one of those movies that you go in knowing it's not going to be revolutionary but you hope it will at least be a fun summer popcorn flick you'll hear people say things like just shut your brain off and enjoy the problem is I'm tired of shutting my brain off if that's a perquisite to watching a movie that's never a good sign I'm sure you're thinking I'm getting old and cranky and that like other critics I have no soul but I'm getting tired of lazy ass movies that simply try to flash a bunch of explosions and images on screen to distract you from the fact that there really isn't anything going on it's all the typical things that Michael Bay does but somehow it ends up being even worse I've heard a lot of comparisons to Skyline and I'd say that's pretty accurate as far as both movies being about alien invasion don't make any sense as you may have already guessed I didn't like Battleship this review is going to be a little more of a rant and spoiler field so fair warning where to even start the movie begins with showing you that NASA has found an exoplanet In the goldilock Zone on the hope that there may be life there a signal is transmitted boosted by a satellite in orbit I'm already kind of scratching my head at this because lots of exoplanets have been found in the goldilock zone this isn't anything new so why are we transmitting to this planet are we doing this for all planets we find is this why NASA needs more money let's get the first floor major floor of this movie out of the way it's way too long it's well over 2 hours yet you can walk in 30 minutes late and you won't miss anything related to the action you're introduced to our hero a drunk Alex Hopper Taylor kit who breaks into a convenience store to steal a chicken burrito for Sam Brooklyn deer this scene would have been funny if it wasn't a blatant ripoff of an actual burglary here's the clip of the actual event they reenact this in the movie as if it was something original this is the kind of crap I expect to see in something from the makers of Epic movie anyway this scene is used to set up that Alex is an underachieving loser that's a disappointment to his older brother Alexander Skarsgard who's in the Navy he forces Alex to enlist in order to get his act straight we fast forward a few years and I can only assume it's been a few years because it's never said how much time has passed and nobody looks any older but Alex is now somehow a I say somehow because it's clear that he's still a screw-up and he's about to get kicked out of the Navy his last mission will be for the rim pack Naval exercises and then he's out oh but before we get to that we're going to watch a soccer match yes you came to watch Battleship because you wanted to see a poorly shot soccer match between the S and Japanese Navy there's no point to this sequence other than to show you that Alex doesn't get along with one of the guys from the Japanese Navy do you think they'll be forced to work together and respect each other by the end of the movie oh the suspense anyway this is seriously the first 30 40 MOS of the film and it didn't need to be there you can skip that first part and there's 30 40 minutes of your life you just got back if you wanted to establish Alex's character it would have been much easier and taken less time to Simply start with him already in the military and show that he's the underachieving officer who's about to be kicked out of the military for fighting or something like that it's a much harder cell to show him as an absolute screw-up even before enlisting and then in just a short short time he's Advanced without seeing any character growth or maturity they tell you several times that Alex is smart and talented but you never see him do anything that demonstrates that finally the aliens show up as the Navy is going through their Rim pack exercises one of their ships is damaged entering Earth's atmosphere and causes all kinds of Destruction as it crashes these aliens can travel light years but I guess they don't have the ability to detect a satellite that's in its direct flight path anyway they Navy investigates the ships that have safely landed in the ocean shortly after the aliens attack the other huge problem is aliens themselves they aren't developed at all what do they want it's clear they are invading but why they don't have a single line of dialogue so there's never a mention about needing resources or Tech biology or just wanting our planet their primary goal seems to be that they need to reestablish communication back home because it's assumed that their communication ship is the one that crashed earlier that sets up a silly subplot involving Sam and a military veteran trying to stop them it's silly not just because of the characters involved D but because it's ultimately pointless we communicated with the aliens first that's how they knew to find us if they were capable of sending five ships to Earth what's to stop them from sending five more or 20 if they never hear back from their ships you don't think at some point they aren't sending more to investigate one of the worst things about the aliens is that they show that they have this threat assessment display that determines whether or not they will attack or even see you so basically in Battleship you can shoot an alien but then stand still and put your gun down and there's a good chance it will ignore you this happened several times in the film never mind that they are invading the Earth for whatever reason and they're in the middle of a battle against people who have clearly fired upon them also the alien showed at other times that they had no issues with causing random destruction that affected civilian targets that posed no threat Battleship doesn't worry about things like logic or making sense their ship design was actually kind of cool though but again there didn't seem to be any consistency to their technology you see times where their ships will fly and other times where they hop around in the water as if they can't sustain flight the actual alien design was kind of silly when the masks finally come off they have Fring goatees yep spiky goatees even aliens have hipsters Battleship has some of the worst dialogue I've seen in a while co-written by arage and John hober this movie badly needed some punch-up Peter Berg is a capable director but it doesn't seem like he had a lot of control over this I have a hard time believing he thought some of the stuff that happens in the movie made any sense how did anyone involved in this think it made any sense there are so many things in the movie that could have been removed like there's a really bad CG shot of a great white shark swimming that looked awful but it had nothing to do with the story why put that in the movie there's a point in the movie where they actually play a version of Battleship staring at display screens as the Navy and Aliens try to find each other really there are two moments in the film where someone presumably dies and there is absolutely no reaction from the witnessing character even though it's someone they care about if you don't care about your characters to show any emotion about them I don't care about them either maybe this is due to hiring actors incapable of expressing these types of emotions I don't want hate on Taylor kitch but this is already the second shitty SCI fif toy movie he's been in this year I get the feeling Hollywood is trying to force this guy on Us Jeremy Rena was originally attached to this role and he wisely passed on it to be in something else Rihanna doesn't have much to do in the movie other than to run in needless slow motion she wasn't terrible but they did a good job of hiding her acting they just throw Brooklyn Decker in some tank tops and short shorts and then her acting consists of either smiling or making a face like she just smelled a fart movie review Lieutenant Alex Hopper has a lot going for him he can quote Homer he's got a jaw that even Matt Damon would envy he plays a mean game of soccer he also sometimes acts like an idiot now I'm not saying that to be cruel it's not like Alex is a metal Terrier shy of a Monopoly board I did after all mention his knowledge of Homer but Alex clearly could use a little help in his decision-making skills let's pretend for a minute that you're Alex with your fine chin and Homer filled mind a pretty girl sits next to you in a bar and mentions she has a hankering for a chicken burrito do you ignore her be offered to take her out to a nice Mexican restaurant sometime time or see break into the convenience store next door and grab her one right away running away from taser wielding police as you do so now pretend you're playing soccer and get smacked in the face triggering a penalty kick you see stars and birds float cartoon-like around your head then you'll allow someone else to make the penalty kick for you be skipped down to positive elements because you're tired of this illustration or see disobey the team captain your own brother threaten the potential substitute kicker with death and insist on taking the kick yourself with Alex the answer is usually C you've got skills an exasperated Admiral tells him but I've never seen anyone waste them like you even when strange alien craft land in the Pacific next to Hawaii Alex makes a series of sea style moves that indirectly get several people killed two boats blown up and perhaps trigger what scientists call an extinction level event so when mounting casualties Force Alex to take command of a batter Destroyer perhaps the last real barrier standing between humanity and the aliens his new cre seems less than inspired they know of Alex's pension for c answers and many of them seem on the verge of grabbing him by the lapels and shaking him until his nice square jaw starts flapping around what's wrong with you they might holler do you think this is some sort of game uh yeah about that positive elements not one character ever declares you sank my battleship but I guess I can still give the film a little credit Alex's decision making skills do improve as the movie wears on he in a bit a rival unite to fight a common enemy he shows humility by temporarily relinquishing his captaincy to someone with more experience and a good idea he shows creativity and heroism on this watery field of battle and I don't think this is a big spoiler eventually Saves the World in fact by the end of Battleship it would appear that Alex might start picking a few bees in the future instead of all C's a bevy of old old Sailors pop up from nowhere and chip in when the chips are down it's as if they were all held in a glass case labeled with sign in case of alien attack break glass a soldier who lost his legs during the war realizes he still has plenty to offer his country several men and women show a great deal of Courage under extraordinarily trying circumstances spiritual elements a ship Bears the slogan In God We Trust all others we track Alex's girlfriend Sam utters a heartfelt thank God when she realizes her bow is okay sexual content Sam's wardrobe consists largely of fitting chest accentuating Garb dresses and tank tops her modesty is particularly obvious during a nighttime Beach Rendevous with Alex wearing a tiny white top and minuscule jeans shorts she straddles Alex while encouraging him to ask her father for permission to marry the two kiss passionately there and elsewhere violent content Battleship of course is Loosely very very very very Loosely based on the popular Hasbro game of the same title and obviously that classic game was built on the idea of implied destruction if your ship fills up with red pegs it sinks metaphorically into the imaginary bottomless plastic depths the only real violence involved is when you get upset enough at losing that you fling a sunk boat across the family room on screen Battleship requires no such Flights of Fancy or even Fury to generate its violence multiple ships both human and alien are sunk almost always accompanied by massive explosions and eardrum rending noise alien shells embed themselves in hulls and then explode ripping boats part we see scrap metal fly and wreckage sink dragging dozens perhaps hundreds of people Into the Depths a sonic boom blows out windows and makes the faces of sailors shake like jello molds but perhaps the most fearsome weapon in the aliens Arsenal is the metallic spinning yo-yo of death the edges of which tear through metal cutting through an entire ship sinking it in concrete causing part of a freeway to collapse sending several cars crashing into a gaping Chasm and if something escapes the yo-yo's toothy clutches as a helicop nearly does the thing whips out a blade and crusted whipped to finish the job even when the alien ships crash they're deadly one hits a satellite on the way into the atmosphere breaking apart as it descends a chunk smashes into a hong Hong skyscraper sending the building tumbling and providing an uncomfortable reminder of 911 in news footage we see wreckage and ruins on fire and fleeting riots in the streets we hear that 25,000 people have been killed but for all that destruction the aliens seem bizarrely averse to unnecessary Bloodshed their equipment doesn't seem to Target anything that isn't immediately threatening and in the beginning they never shoot anything until it shoots at them while the body count is undeniably high the movie rarely shows much blood Beyond lacerated and bruised faces we do see countless injured people strewn about ship decks or being taken to infirmaries the aliens engage in fist fights with humans they destroy two police Jeeps tearing them apart and leaving the resulting corpses in the wreckage Alex falls hard on his back while breaking into a convenience store he's tasered twice and the next morning his back Bears the marks crude or profane language twoof words are abbreviated by way of loud explosions we also hear just over a dozen's words somewhat milder exclamations tally in at around 30 and include a DNH H bch and B God's name is abused nearly 10 times once connected to a DN drug and alcohol content the first time we see Alex he's in a bar for his birthday drinking shots and beer with stone his brother other negative elements Alex picks fights with people and breaks into a convenience store he leaves money to pay for the burrito but presumably not for the damage he caused as the crews for armadas from different countries are announced as part of a multinational Naval exercise a sailor lightly mocks them under his breath someone mistakes a legless man for a cybor Alex says that asking Sam's father for his permission to to marry her is an obsolete tradition conclusion Battleship shares some similarities with our good Lieutenant Alex it's big it's bombastic it's slick looking and it can feel really really dumb at times but it also knows a bit of Homer and by that I mean it has the wisdom to know what it is and what it isn't this is not a movie that aspires to be an Oscar Contender its only ambition is to keep audiences entertained and eating pricey popcorn for a couple of hours by those limited standards B ship is not abysmal and in its own cacophonous way it offers some pretty nice thoughts it's great to see for instance such a positive portrayal of the American Military working with an assist from an ally or two and living at a time when most films suggest that you have to be young and handsome to do anything worthwhile it's great to see a bunch of tough as nail 70 and 80-year-old men do their part to save the world Alex and his sibling have clear affection for each other and even when Alex strains their relationship to the breaking point Stones believe and his brother remain steadfast so this flick won't strain anyone's brain but it may spark a bit of inspiration which isn't necessarily reason enough to throw the fam in the van and drive to the nearest Multiplex the violence is non-stop foul language is an issue and there's a scene or two of sensuality I won't flat out tell you whether or not you should see arrive in weeks they must have discovered faster than light speeds so it's a little strange that when they arrive they're strictly analog their vast warships splash down in the Pacific except for fragments that devastate Hong Kong in one of those toppling skyscrapers scen so beloved in disaster movies but these alien crafts are only armed at a level that makes their battle with us warships more or less a standoff why would the US Fleet conveniently already be near the Splashdown point it's involved in war games with allies such as Japan which provides an excuse for a Japanese officer to take temporary command of one of our ships and thus boost the grosses of battleship in Asia it's also handy that the aliens create a force field that forms an impenetrable barrier around their craft which seals in three us ships locks out all other ships and explains why our Jets don't simply nuke the s the 14 scariest mythological monsters in horror movies of course in the old B movie tradition our response to the alien visit is immediately military there's not one word of discussion about the aliens possibly just making a social call we invite them they come and we open fire this despite the fact that they're remarkably humanoid when we finally remove the helmet from one alien space suit he turns out to look alarmingly like James Carville in the setup we meet a shiftless Beach Bum named Alex POA Taylor kitch whose brother Stone Alexander Skarsgard is a naval officer in a bar Alex hits on the liome Samantha Shane Brooklin DEA who wouldn't you know is the daughter of the admiral of the fleet Liam niss breaking into a convenience store to get her a burrito Alex is arrested and his brother delivers an ultimatum join the Navy or else meanwhile the nerdy Cal Hamish linklater supervises transmission of the signal to Planet G and in no more time than it takes to get Alex into uniform and on board a us to Destroyer five alien spacecraft enter our solar system in tight formation one alien craft then levitates from the ocean depths as large as a skyscraper and bristling with ominous protrusions you got to say it takes real nerve for communications officer Rihanna and two seen to speed over to it in a rubber boat armed with just a machine gun in a parallel story we learned Samantha is a physical therapist working with the Army vet MC Canal's real life Iraq hero Gregory D Gadson she takes him on a hike up the mountain side where the big NASA radio dishes are located they meet the nerd and much depends on preventing the aliens from phoning home in the Pentagon Situation Room officials fret there's the obligatory Montage of cable news reports on the Alien Invasion and the US destroyers exchange fire with the aliens two ships are destroyed including the one commanded by Stone and after several officers on Alex's ship die he turns out to be next in command and becomes the captain of the surviving US Destroyer so that's venient the characters we met at the beginning all become the key players battleship is based on a Hasbro board game of the same name I'm played by me you get a sense of that when radar doesn't work and Rihanna figures out a way to deduce the underwater movements of the alien craft by tracking wave patterns on a grid with old-fashioned weather boys the film eventually comes down to lots of scenes in which things get blowed up real good one alien weapon is especially fearsome a large metal ball with spikes which rolls through things and flattens them were less sophisticated versions of this used in medieval times may be made of flaming tar balls the film is in the tradition of the Transformers movies also based on Hasbro games and you get the feeling that Hasbro showed director Peter Berg and Michael Bay movies and told him to go and do likewise to his credit battleship is a more entertaining film than the Transformers titles because it has slightly more fully fleshed characters a better plot and a lot of naval combat strategy the work of Gregory Gadson as the disabled vet is especially affected he has a Fierce screen presence Brianna is as convincing as the character allows and Taylor kit makes a sturdy if predictable hero but the nicest touch is that Battleship has an honest to God third act instead of just settling for Non-Stop fireballs and explosions as ba likes to do I don't want to spoil it for you let's say the greatest Generation still has the right stuff and leave it at that is the board game Battleship still popular or is it retro now he's making a movie of the game marketable more to adults who used to play the game as opposed to Children kids play video games no this is probably why the movie Battleship based on a board game looks and acts like a video game so let's say I am the demographic for this film well I did not care for a battleship one of the loudest movies I've ever seen now I'm going to attempt something never done before and something that should not be done without supervision I'm going to reference Shakespeare when speaking of Battleship but this movie was a tale told by an idiot full of Sound and Fury signifying nothing Battleship thighs was an 80s movie with 2012 special effects as the simple naval war game strategies of the game are expanded to now include an Intergalactic battle aliens yes aliens have received a message from NASA and come to attack the Hawaii area and set up a communication platform to communicate with their home planet and invite all of their friends to come kill us standing in their way battleships and destroyers and aircraft carriers but no submarine surprisingly they did refer to the source material right down to the shape of the alien bombs they look like the little white pegs you play the board game with my favorite scene was actually a full-on board game reference at one point the battleships are trying to track down the alien ships without radar so they map out the ocean using weather boys and then fire into the nothingness hoping to hit their target that's just like the game and it was creative and clever and suspenseful made me think none of that outer space stuff was necessary and you know what none of that outer space stuff was necessary the score was from Steve jablonsky who did the score for Transformers and it really feels like he didn't write another score here he just took the Transformers score and spaced it out accordingly so it would time out perfectly to enhance the action in this movie too but you got to admire the idea of working once and stretching as much use and money out of your work as possible fake Matt demon there's a blonde guy in this movie that we call fake Matt Damon his name is Jesse plens and he was on Friday Night Lights and here he plays a crew mate on the US John Paul Jones his character doesn't do as much as Matt Damon would therefore you don't need Matt Damon so I thought the idea of getting a cheaper Faker Matt Damon was a good call and there's also a fake Ving RS real life double amput Gregory D Gadson plays an army vet who finds his way into the battle to save the world and he has that stone-faced marcelous Wallace had in Pulp Fiction and the low emotionless draw too he's kind of the guy who they go to to describe the plot he says things like you've got to go down to that Command Center and retrieve the communicator and you're going to drive this car now just in case seeing everything that was happening in the movie wasn't enough for the viewer fear not fake thing Reigns is here to explain it all for you too battleships Lim Nissan overall the action is I don't know trying so hard that it loses impact explosions become so commonplace they grow stale and routine and the actors don't do much to make this an actor's movie the mo is just stay out of the way of the special effects please thank you I'm still rooting for Taylor kit to be a great leading man he underplayed John Carter very well I thought but he doesn't do much to shake any opinions of him that he's just a stonos surfer type with exotic good looks Liam n's collecting a paycheck in Brooklyn Deca was sorely underused and that can't be said about every model turned actress she's very funny and What to Expect When You're Expecting but the lost image of her in Battleship sums up her role here they literally turned on the fan and the slow-mo to accentuate her beauty she's got comedy skills and I hope they get used more than propping her up in Michael Bay wastelands as the pretty girl I'm talking to you Megan Fox battleship is one of my most anticipated films of the year after I have first watched its Trail a few months ago finally I get to watch it today after it has been released to the cinema many days already battleship is a science fiction naval war film not a against a particular country but on a group of extraterrestrial robotic Ships coming down to the sea from a planet far far away that the Earth is trying to communicate with uh I'm glad this movie is released earlier in Malaysia as it is supposed to be released in United States on May boom boom boom I hear a lot of gigantic explosions from this film those explosions and firing scenes from this film are epic that is the single aspect throughout the entire film that worked well and brings the movie to quite a success it's really very exciting seeing those ships either of the Navy or of the alien ships exploding after being hit by multiple attacks it hits the audiences and got us concentrated on the battle once it is started yes the climax started once the battle began the beginning part that emphasizes on character's development was quite boring I keep waiting for the battle to comes which looks very promising even from its trailer already ah I am not disappointed the battle which covers almost 3/4s of the whole film really impressed me the state of the art stunning Visual and seamless CGI effects are very amazing and made everything looks very realistic event though I believe some explosions are a bit too exaggerated but I like it the volume is very high but it actually adds to the excitement further the actor who portrayed as the main character Alex Hooper in this film performed quite well in the film same goes to others oh wait the lead actor is Taylor kit he looks better in short hair on this film than his previous appearance in long hair on John Carter however as for Rihanna a famous singer nowadays who made her debut into film appearance on this I find she could not fit well into the whole thing she would be better if remained only in singing Korea I finds the movie goes weird whenever she was there in the midst of many breathtaking scenes well the plot is quite straightforward which made the whole story easy to understand but I detected some plot holes but I'm sure people going in there for this movie with their mind mostly on the extreme firing and exploding scenes only sorry Michael Bay there is someone out there who could challenge you easily on producing this kind of robotic battle in film out of 10 points I rate this movie a total of 76 an extreme and explosive movie of 2 hours long that would certainly satisfies people who like this sort of theme you would certainly be overwhelmed once the battle begins this movie reminded me of Pearl Harbor another movie many years ago but this one is far better when comparing on the quality of the battle shot now I wish to watch the battle from this Battleship again proportional strategy and luck are required to win Battleship the family board game Peter burgs loudly proudly ridiculous soldiers vs Aliens Blockbuster rather fancifully claims as its source as played by Taylor Kit's beefy Navy Lieutenant however Victory requires no such niceties just the biggest explosives the military can provide over long and underwritten even by the standards of Summer FS extravaganzas this Battleship will nonetheless float with many on the strength of its boyish eager to please razzled Dazzle Bowing in Europe a month before its Us opening P should perform robustly enough to Greenlight the sequel patently set up by its post credit sting having already parlayed its beloved GI Joe and Transformers action figures into hit Hollywood franchises toy manufacturing giant Hasbro has now turned its attention to its classic board game collection on the surface the idea isn't as silly as it seems a board game after all has more of a built-in narrative structure than a doll though battleships Mish hit syn trajectory perhaps tells a simpler story than most certainly a lot of ships get sunk in fraternal riding Duo John and erage hoba screenplay though there the similarity ends there's Nar and in joke about the game to be found here indeed rather Alex is to join him in the Navy in seemingly no time at all Alex has graduated to Lieutenant level despite equally feckless behavior in uniform and is in a serious relationship with Samantha whose Stern dad Lam niss just happens to be commander of the Pacific Fleet all principles are convenient ly involved then when Planet G's alien spacecraft crashes into the Pacific and rises ominously from the depths near the naval base in Oahu a reconnaissance mission led by Alex and Scrappy female officer re Rihanna aggravates the visitors into opening fire setting the stage for a protracted series of authentic charm he exhibits in TV's Friday Night Lights though he's physically up to the task here fans of pop meast star Rihanna making her film debut will be disappointed to find that the role of this evidently expensive production has been lavished on industrial Light and Magic's typically Immaculate effects which are firmly in the Transformers mold stylistically with the added challenge of water simulation that such state-of-the-art Creations have been used to realize a story whose climax hinges on a True Life WW2 Battleship us Missouri outlasting its newer shiny arrivals is an irony probably lost on all involved you sank my sense of logic battleship is one of those movies that you go in knowing it's not going to be revolutionary but you hope it will at least be a fun summer popcorn flick you'll hear people say things like just shut your brain off and enjoy the problem is I'm tired of shutting my brain off if that's a perquisite to watching a movie that's never a good sign I'm sure you're thinking I'm getting old and cranky and that like other critics I have no soul but I'm getting tired of lazy ass movies that simply try to flash a bunch of explosions and images on screen to distract you from the fact that there really isn't anything going on it's all the typical things that Michael Bay does but somehow it ends up being even worse I've heard a lot of comparisons to Skyline and I'd say that's pretty accurate as far as both movies being about alien invasions don't make any sense as you may have already guessed I didn't like Battleship this review is going to be a little more of a rant and spoiler field so fair warning where to even start the movie begins with showing you that NASA has found an exoplanet In the goldilock Zone on the hope that there may be life there a signal is transmitted boosted by a satellite in orbit I'm already kind of scratching my head at this because lots of exoplanets have been found in the goldilock zone this isn't anything new so why are we transmitting to this planet are we doing this for all planets we find is this why NASA needs more money let's get the first floor major floor of this movie out of the way it's way too long it's well over 2 hours yet you can walk in 30 minutes late and you won't miss anything related to the action you're introduced
