the Grayson County Cougars hit the road to Marshall County for their first ever road trip to Benton cougars last week picked up the big win against Edmonson County 35 to Zer but tonight brings a new challenge last season Grayson County 9 and one on the year they only had one loss in the regular season and it came to the marshals and a good good evening and welcome here to Marshall County High School for tonight's coverage of cougar football on k105 Sam Gormley and Ken howlet with you here today and Ken our camera has frozen up because this Press Box is hotter than the face of the sun yes it's uh I'll predict 198 degrees that's my prediction I said ear the Press 105 because we're at least K 105 as well we'll try to bring us our camera here a little bit in fact even says iPhone needs to cool down guess what it's not just that it's just it's us as well we walked in here earlier and Ken you you were a little bit behind us it was hot when we got here and it cooled down since you got here and you walked in you said oh no you weren't you weren't kidding it's real warm but because that it's also warm on the field and that's going to be a huge Factor tonight for this Grayson County team well you got to keep guys you know cramping could be an issue tonight Sam uh I'm sure Coach Jones is taken uh the steps necessary steps to to limit uh the number of cramps his guys have but that that will certainly be something to keep an eye on tonight really for both teams because it's on that Turf down there we don't have a thermometer down there but you know it's it has to be you know well over 90 95 degrees on the field this is the third all-time match up between the two teams Marshall County leads two to Z Marshall County won last year 26 to2 in Lichfield and they also won at Murray State 24 to7 back in 2004 the game was at Murray State Grayson County finished last season with a 10-2 record it was their most win since 1982 in the second most in program history last week Grayson County defeated Edmonton County 35 to Z for their sixth straight win in the series and their seventh straight one and0 start cougars look to make their roow win streak to six which would be their longest streak since 2018 Grace Kenny's won nine consecutive regular season games they will look to win 10 straight for the first time since 2008 2009 on the other side Marshall County enters coming in off of a loss to Bethlehem last week 37-3 the marshals only won two games on the field last year that was mberg County and Grayson County they did have three wins overall their one win came against Bethlehem due to a forfeit this Marshall team has struggled at home having lost eight straight here at trailer Stadium they have a new head coach though Nick Bloodworth Murray State Alum was County Marshall County enters with a record of 0 and one they lost last week to Bethlehem by a final score of 37-13 nean jesic returns as a starting quarterback last week 19 of 29 for 194 yards two touchdowns and an interception he r tushed seven times for 16 last year he passed for just shy of 900 yard seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions your running backs you're going to have a lot of them Cas Holland got the Lion Share of carries last week 10 attempts for 24 yards he only had three carries all of last year Jake Thomasson The Freshman six attempts for 42 yards now it'll be interesting because they did return some leading rushers from a year ago Luke Weber a year ago did not have any rushes last week but a year ago 62 attempts for 362 yards and a pair of touchdowns Luke nmo had 37 attempts for 139 yards and a touchdown last season as well for the marshals and did not attempt any rushes this week cash Hensen though Ken is their favorite Target last week nean jesk completed 19 passes 10 went to the senior cash Henson that's G be somebody the Cougars going to have to keep an eye on tonight there's no question about that that's one of my keys to the game that we'll get to here in a minute but uh a different this is definitely a different attack than you typically see uh with high school teams that that don't have a a well-known stud quarterback to throw this ball this much uh in 19 for 29 nothing wrong with that uh as far as his percentage of completion so uh the secondary the grayon County secondary is really going to have to tighten up tonight uh and uh get also the get some pressure on this quarterback and not make it so easy for him torren Redmond another big receiver Cameron Brown is a actual big receiver he's about 6'4 he's going to be a massive Target as a tight end coming out of the back field as well scoring defense allowed 33.1 points per game last season they allow they have allowed 30 plus in five straight games and eight of the last nine dating back to last year the rush defense was good last week against bethleem only allowed four yards per carry and that that'll get it done pass defense though allowed 2011 through the air to the Eagles a Grayson County 1 and0 on the season Colby aens he had a good game last week six of 10 passing for 120 yards and two touchdowns along with 24 rushing yards as today's Locker room show is brought to you was 60% last week 120 yards that'll get it done uh Kaden hanshaw we say that he didn't necessarily do I mean he didn't have a bad game last week but it wasn't typical Kaden but still he had 95 or 90 rushing yards Ethan mud though added rushing yards as well 87 so when you combine those to that's really good because you want to try 180 yards a rushing that's nothing wrong with that and you're trying to keep those guys fresh later on in the season exactly good point Grayson chin leading returning SE receiver he caught 25 passes last season only two on last Friday tonight jet Hawkins caught two passes for 72 yards he left the game with an injury but is going to play tonight that's good to hear Shane Hall caught one pass it was a 20- yard touchdown in his first came back from the broken leg last year cougars averaged 30 points a game they have scored double digit games in every game last season for the first time in program history they have now done it in 14 straight games which is the longest streak in program history scoring double digit points uh scoring defense 10.6 points per game last week they pitched a shutout as well in that game forc three turnovers Matthew McAllister had interception Brenton Robinson and Tanner Warner had fumble recoveries Grayson County one and0 they are coached by Mr Brian Jones and I thought we actually I thought I was a little bit further along Ken so I was ripping through some stuff and I actually have a couple extra minutes here or about a minute to clear before we need to get to Coach Jones interview but to me we can talk about the defense and go a little bit more the defense was a question through the first two scrimmages not good last week I'm not sure Kevin EMB defensive coordinator could have asked for much more well if Brian didn't buy him a steak dinner after that game then uh he owes him one because hang there you go there you go uh the defense really we we you know we we almost beat it with a dead horse last week uh leading up to the in our conversation before the game but wow they really came to play the the dline uh the the uh defensive line was really outstanding something that Coach Jones talked about K1 welcome back to locker room show here on k105 Sam G I'll joined by head coach Brian Jones from the Grayson County Cougars coach he had that game against Edmonson did you learn anything on film when you went back and watched it you know I thought we did a really good job up front uh I think I've been maybe a little bit critical um and place some lofty uh goals expectations different things on that group uh but I'm just a firm believer and the the better you are up front typically the better you are as a team and so you know I I've I've told the kids that you we'll be as good as we are up front and and I think they um you know they handled the challenge well and I think uh you know there may have been a little bit of uh um I don't know if it's factual or not but there there was word that came our way that uh you know that that team believed they were better than us up front so I think it was a challenge for our guys and I think they responded well I think they got a tough challenge this week uh Marshall's huge um and uh you know they kind of handled us and smacked Us in the mouth a lot last year uh they were more physical and so uh you know here we are week two with another challenge and if uh you know if we can handle things up front I I think we'll be okay we ran at a time after the game last week but we had the conversation off air about Evan Hasty and how you told me before the game I asked you who was going to be the kicker and you said Evan Hasty and I and I think I asked something like how how is he you said oh he's you know he's pretty good are you sure that wasn't Adam vinary and you told me a pretty good story how did Evan Hasty become the kicker you know I think um the start of the week you know once we kind of knew for sure that uh Beasley was was down and out um we just kind of opened it up and just said you know anybody think they can kick and narrowed it down to a couple of guys and uh you know I got opportunity to to watch watch him kick and uh I felt like he was very good with his placement on kickoff and got a lot of height um which you know I like because it allow us to kind of cover it up and uh and then the following day um I was like oh you know you did pretty good job at that you know let's see if you can kick PS and uh and I think he missed one out of the you know dozen or so that we had him kick and and I was pretty sold on the fact that you know I I felt like he could get the job done for us and then he he really had a great game last week I he had the one M hit late in the game which probably makes me kind of look like a you know a bad guy onside kicking uh up 35 nothing but um you know it's and it was just a m hit and um you know I told I told the coaches afterwards we may have to try to implement that as an onside kick because it was so high that you know had we went after it it was it was a jump ball you know and um so no he did a great job and and I think um you know I think he played soccer maybe when he was younger and and um you know I think the biggest thing is is I just feel like he hadn't put very much pressure on himself and just been calm cool and collected about kicking um and uh so we couldn't be more happy and excited uh about the job he did you have a bus ride tonight that is long it's the longest bus ride Grayson County's taken in 20 years in the month of August this early on in the season you compound that with in case you've been outside it's a little warm school bus that's a recipe for I mean I I I'm not envious of the team having to to get on the school bus how do you combat that well you know I think the biggest thing is is we're going to try to get on the road early and get over there earlier than we normally would so we can get off the bus move around wake up um you know and and were I told the guys I said listen be is comfortable as possible shorts and t-shirts it's going to be hot the buses don't have air conditioning we're taking um you know a kind of a skeleton crew um you know we're not taking any extra we're taking you know what we need and uh so we have the extra room on the bus and um you know and then fact of the matter is is you just got to you just got to face it and and grit your teeth get through it and and play hard uh regardless of the bus ride or the distance or anything like that we got to show up at 7:00 ready for kickoff because you could say the same thing it was just as hot last year when Marshall County made the trip up here you when we were talking after the game you mentioned the physicality of Marshall County and that was the difference in the game last year them beating you how do you combat physicality uh we got to match physicality with physicality you know we we've got to be the deliverer uh of the blow and you know kind of our Mantra from last year you know that that that's that be the hammer attitude and uh you know I think uh we saw some of that last week of our guys kind of being the enforcer of the contact and we're going to have to do the same this week you know we're going to have to go deliver some blows and and seek out contact uh don't let the contact come to you you go seek contact find somebody to hit uh and let them know that you're on the field kind of deal and so um I think if we can do that wrap up um you know and and they seem to want to throw it quite a bit more than they did last year uh if we can cover some things up in on the back end and um you know I think we'll be okay but they're going to play hard you know they're they're a group of individuals that want to win even last season you know I think they won two ball games but they want to win they play extremely hard um being that far west you know the scheduling aspect of things I think becomes a little difficult and they play a tough schedule uh out of district and and in District so you know they're um they're used to kind of the physical game and everything like that uh we're going to have to do our part put points on the board and and hopefully um you know if we can maybe break their Spirit early um you know and not let them linger around I think uh you know that would be good for us you mentioned the quarterback they have a wide receiver too that they went to 10 times last week he had well over a 100 yards he had both of their touchdowns what do you see from them as a whole both on offense and defense well I mean I well first and foremost they're huge um you know they've got some linemen that are extremely big they got a nose that I would guess is 65 probably 330 and moves fairly well he played offensive guard form him last year against us um backs are big linebackers are big thick kids but then you know I I think the quarterback throws a really really good ball he does a good job extending plays with his feet um and uh you know and I think the receivers do a really good job of running nice routes good spacing uh sure-handed and you know you're going to have to have to get used to that much I I think the weather is supposed to cool off quite a bit next week I mean I hope it's not I think it's 135 outside right now yeah uh it is in here uh we're just about six minutes away from kickoff for Grayson County and Marshall County Ken your keys to the game I tell you one the first thing that came to mind thinking about keys to the game tonight is something that Brian touched on last week after the game and that is dominate the line of play offensive defensive lines that's that's where you a lot of times win and or lose games so that's number one number two need to tighten up uh coverage in the secondary this will be a team that's going to throw the ball 25 to 30 times based on what they did last week uh they ran the ball 23 times as well so it wasn't like they didn't run the ball uh but our secondary members will be challenged tonight like they haven't been uh so far this year what I am intrigued by that though is that they were down big how much of that had was you're down you have to pass right they ran the ball as I just said 23 times so it's not like they didn't R it so uh the third pressure the quarterback get Brian touched on that in his interview with you uh he he is able to create uh space create time with his legs so here the pursuit of that quarterback uh in pressuring that quarterback uh I think tonight is going to be County 1 and0 Marshall County 0 And1 it is the third alltime match up between the Cougars and the marshals last year was the second all time matchup Marshall County won 23-20 and these two teams met back in 2004 at a game played not far from here at Murray State University Marshall County won 24-7 in that game Marshall County is about to run through their big helmet that they have a blowup helmet looks like can about all 80 players on their team think everybody yes I think everybody's running through the helmet it's like the clowns coming out of the Volkswagen it pretty much is I'm not sure if we have a camera that's picking up on it or not but you'll be able to see them all it says the real orange is something blue I don't know what it said but Marshall County's taking the field here we're about ready to roll Grayson County won the toss they want the football I think it's interesting you know what are your thoughts you know Mark Stoops at UK is always deferring uh it seems like about 80% of the time he defers so do do you want to know the difference between Mark stops and Brian Jones about million a year he'd probably say that uh Coach Jones has a little bit more hair too but what are your thoughts on well coach what's Mark stops' background what side of the ball defense Brian Jones's background is offense Goro Chris leak offense baby so his philosophy is well I guess that's pretty simple stat Mak sense makes sense makes sense and we talked Kaylor and I talked about this a lot I'm more of the mentality of you defer because then you can go try and go for one at the end of the first half I like the purring I like defurring that's me but hey coach Jones's philosophy is is if we make it seven to nothing we never have to Trail the entire he's he's forgotten more about football than most people will know so we're getting ready to roll here Marshall County if you remember last year's game they had a kicker who I think they just trotted Adam vinit ter out there in Marshall County's colors last week or last year he gradu he's kicking for the Baltimore Ravens now Tommy Robertson is their kicker he is soccer background though he's about to kick it away from right to left on your radio dial Grayson Chaffin back deep for the orange and blue of Grayson County and we have a whistle blown I'm not entirely sure what we're waiting for here Ken somebody's not ready don't get into a situation to where they're kicking a 40-yard field go to win because he's got some leg on him to get the ball at their own 20 yard line Colby Chaffin will try down as a starting quarterback last week six of 10 120 yards and two touchdowns the running attack for him wasn't necessarily there only 12 attempts for 24 yards Ken hallw is a leading returning rusher he rushed for nearly 1400 yards last week or last season and 90 yard a week ago the bulk of those were in the second half if you remember Sam correct he was held very quiet to open up handshaw is going to go to the left of the senior quarterback Colby Chaffin to open up got an offset tight end as well on the right side that's Ethan mud and now the official is talking to official is talking to kby Cha I'm not Grayson County from their own 33 yd line balls plac in the far hash cougars wearing the road white jerseys orange pants and the navy blue helmets Ethan mud will pop onto the left side of the line as a tight end jet Hawkins down here to the near side Grayson Chaffin to the high side Marshall County in the 4-3 defense screen pass Far Side complete to Grayson Chaffin a short pickup he's driven backwards ball comes out and they're going to say he's down yeah short pickup though by Grayson Chaffin of about three yards up to the 36 yd line it'll bring up second down and seven just a little turnaround play uh grayon ran three four yards turned around bam hit with the uh pass right on the button but uh no gain after that but it picked up what three four yards there Sam bring up second out seven gain of three on the first completion like a long hand of this game is all that was it's an extension of the Run game yes there you go second and seven for Grayson County just over a minute into to give him two up to the 38 yeah they have some hoses they're definitely feeding these boys right down here because there's some some big old big old fellas that was an a gap run that picked up maybe a yard two officially it'll bring a third down in five that that that that run did better than what I thought he was hit early too he was hit quickly any yardage he got he got on his own third down and five for Grayson County 10 minutes left in the first quarter shotgun formation one to the left two to the right from left to right on the radio dial shifting in motion is Ethan mud Chaffin will roll out to the near side he's hit he throws it is complete that'll be enough for a first down Grayson cha across the 50 yard line breaks the tackle as he crosses the 40 and gets down to the 35 yd line flag is down on the play and it's going to be a face mask on Marshall County that's going to move the chains even further kobby Chason Chapin feeling extreme pressure gets rid of the ball throws it just a little bit behind Grayson in the air in a great athletic move reaches behind him and then gets yards after the catch what a great play by Grayson chapers right now the play is about 24 yards it is a face mask that's going to give us some more yardage and the Cougars are going to enter the Red Zone well actually know they're going to be just on the outskirts of the Red Zone here after the big face mask penalty it's actually only it's only a five yard yeah incidental face mask I guess so it'll be to the 30 about the 31 and a half here for Grayson County first down and 10 on the Marshall County 31 adding that as almost an HB back is Ethan mud we didn't see this last week two hand shaw run left side his first touch of the game he's bottled up after a gain of maybe one couple right following the tight end on that deal Marshall County excellent job of converging on the runner and not ball watching and uh maybe there here's the thing is last year kayen hanshaw being a Freshman teams didn't know him Grace Count's played every s this is the second time they played these teams in a two-year stretch because of the two-year contracts yeah they learned last year that Kate hanshaw is an excellent rning back this kid is the real deal so uh he's going to face this type of uh uh you know emphasis from the other team all year long I would expect no score early on three minutes into the game here from Marshall County High School Chaffin in the shotgun option up the middle he keeps it himself as he goes up to 30 Dives down across the 25 yd line that'll be a pickup of about six yards for Colby jaens bringing up third down and four another nice read There by Colby uh recognized he had some if he could get through that first line there was some green grass where the linebacker should be uh and ends up with a nice game third down in Long three a short four for Grayson County Cougars have never beaten Marshall County previous two matchups went the way of the marshals Marshall County last year only won two games on the field they technically have three wins one was by a forfeit because of an ineligible player used by bethleem a running back on each side of Chaffin it'll be given to handshaw bounce it out on that far side he tries to get the edge Dives towards the first down marker and it looks slow well I don't know at first glance I thought he got it by reaching it out but that's a not a great spot on the far side and it's looks like he's going to be a yard short yard yard short I think that's not a great spot that's an awful spot now that is the worst spot I think they moved it back from the sideline when they threw it to the middly give him two a gain of three yards that's a that's a that's a HomeTown spot for Marshall County it'll be fourth down and one now for gron County cha when when hanshaw was being tackled he reached the ball out and maybe his knee was down when he did that but it didn't look like it and I mean that official is a whole lot closer than we are there he's a lot closer has a better angle but it sure looked like was beyond where that ball spotted if anything it should be fourth down in inches instead of fourth down in one right in the eye goes Grayson County and we have a timeout taken or delay game I believe it's called on Grayson County here well that's not good that's not a good that's a mental error right there on somebody because uh you just turned fourth and one to Fourth that's what the downside is is Marshall County technically by rule needs to turn off the clock on their side because they have a play clock and Grayson County doesn't doesn't now the official we've not seen an official signal either from this he's walked the ball back but they are going to walk it back sets it now here comes the white hat to Thomasson Luke Weber Luke nmo maybe even you Ken maybe 40 40 years ago jessic has a running back on each side it's a hand off up the middle diving forward that's Jake Thomasson for a pick up of about two yards that was kayen haaw getting in the back field and tripping him up grabbed his foot and brought him down nice hustle play second down and about eight so it's a gain of two on the Run for the two or three yards with a couple of cougars hanging off of him it's a gain of of four for Marshall County bringing up third down and five for the marshals that running back is listed at 59140 and that's from last year which is not huge but he could have put some weight on from uh as you say from last year jic to pass it bubbles the ball it's incomplete is that a live ball it doesn't matter Marshall County falls down on it I think it is fumble is a fumble that clearly had to have been sweat kby Chaffin was in the back field he almost was able to recover it now the Marshall are going to cooler and I tell you that I thought the cougar defense that time uh looked pretty good uh as they did kind of carried over uh their performance from last week where they look so strong and so that's bringing a lot of pressure early on how do you stop somebody from giving pressure you throw screens and we've thrown three or four three or four that would qualify a screen so far they've not really yd line gets down to the 23 nice gain of about 8 yards for Colby Chaffin Colby is making the right reads today last week there were some moments where he didn't we we talked about that uh after the game and uh kind of foreshadowed what we're seeing tonight that he would learn from that first game and all even though he is an experienced quarterback uh but he's he's 100% tonight on raids 35 still just keeps moving his legs and is going to turn what would have been a three- yard loss into maybe a gain of one you know that's T these guys are taught just keep your legs moving keep those to throw deep looking for red well overthrown and incomplete and turnover on Downs go the Marshalls cougars are going to get the ball on their own 35 yd line yeah let's give credit what credit is Du there the Grayson County secondary on those last two passes there was nothing there on either pass uh uh really no nowhere for the quarterback to throw the ball outstanding job in coverage they're looking towards Redman a lot I don't know you might watch this next time Marshall has the ball but I thought a couple of their receivers gave up on that play Help helped Grayson one of the thing j keeps doing and and he's not afraid to say to try and talk to his receivers and point to them to go deep and luckily he's not only pointing to his receivers to go deep he's pointing to the Grayson County secondary see everybody can see that yes he's not invisible first down and 10 from their own 35 yd line given to Mud across the right side as they faked the hand off to hand shaw and they didn't fool the marsh county defense it's pick up of about two yards up to the 35 yeah nice Pursuit there nice job by Marshall they weren't pulled at all uh whatever mud picked up he got on his own we've seen a lot of two back sets early on in this game he didn't do that there was a little bit of that last last week but more of it last week was in the eye right he he ran a lot out of the eye last week and this week you're seeing a lot more shotgun with a running back on each side in the gun goes Chaffin this time it's just hand shaw to his right Hawkins goes out to the right side kept by Chaffin up the middle and he's driven backwards for a loss of one yard I don't know necessarily that that was the wrong read it just was good defense by Marshall County they weren't foed he didn't have a choice uh he didn't really have a choice there you know uh if he would have pitched or or uh it wouldn't that wouldn't have gotten anything either that wouldn't have gained any yards excellent job by Marshall County third down and nine eight and a half left here in this first first half it's 80 cougars have the advantage against Marshall County we got a su pressence over there in the Grayson County stands I mean that's not terrible for a two-hour trip State uh County pairs going on two on each side hand shaw to the left of Chaffin four on the play clock Chaffin looks for the County's leading receiver receiver cash Henson on the offensive side of the ball today he had 10 passes caught a week ago jessic on the give up the middle to thomass he runs forward and just carries tacklers with him will Vincent in there on the tackle along with Corbin Gary gets it up to the 35 yd line that's a 5 yard gain extracurricular activity going on here with between the wide receivers and the cornerbacks uh I've seen it a couple of times we'll keep an eye on that see if hopefully that doesn't turn into anything but uh lot of lot of hands to the face after the play after the whistle in the gun jesic he will pass pump fake scrambles to the near side he Loops it off to Redmond he's hit immediately as he catches it right at the first down marker gets it up to the 41 yd line that'll put a move on cuz he has nothing but green grass in front of him but uh maybe look for for Grayson to play a little bit more press coverage in instead of giving those guys all that room on that getting pushed around right now Sam quite frankly this game feels very similar to last year where Marshall County just ran the ball right at Grayson County and said hey stop me stop me baby and Grayson County could not and they lost their one game in the regular season because of it in the gun Jes steps up the pocket over the middle throws it into traffic and it is incomplete he PS some emphasis on there and there were about six cougars in the area four cougars within Arms Reach that ball almost r that let's let let let's let's see him do that again wow and he he cocked back dangerous baby flock too yeah that had some mustard on it for real for sure not sure if Jessica is a pitcher for their baseball team but uh if I was to Marshall County baseball coach I'd say hey bud in 1980 what was Grayson County what was Grayson County High School like back then well it was okay by 1980 it was a little rough in 1970 fall of 1974 but uh everything came together everybody came together the teachers were great the kids in Grayson County were great then they still are uh it was good uh I had been at the middle school for three years as assistant principal I'd been teaching at the High school then to the middle school and then back to the high school everything was ready to go kenth Ray before me and Mr John Hill Taylor before me had everything set up everything was good what was it how did it help you in having the different you were Middle School you had that background you had the background at canille high school how did that help you in adjusting to becoming the principal of Grayson County High School well I think the best thing about that is I've lived in Grayson County all my life until recently but um uh you know I went to Shrewsbury Elementary School went to canville high school and then to Western and came back uh started teaching eighth grade and then uh three years in high school math and then we Consolidated and the consolidation was something that was needed it uh we had an old building at canville an old building at Clarkson and a newer one at lville but it was getting old so it was time to come together so you know the the school board decided to and it was great uh yeah being in candyville the small school and then going to the middle school which had as many student middle school students double the middle school students that we had high school students in candyville and then coming back to the high school and I've got to say that uh one of the good things about it is I had the class of 1984 for six years I had him two years at the high school uh two years at the middle school and four years at the high school and I've said and some of them will tell you that we kind of grew up together because they went from I had them from seventh grade through 12th grade and at that time uh when I went to the high school I was 31 years old so I wasn't a whole lot older than some of them and now that we are older they know I was not very much older than they were you coached as well I know multiple sports do do you have any favorite memories from coaching well no I just I love sports and love to coach uh I was able to yeah started with you know Little League baseball in Caneyville uh junior pro basketball we called it in the whole County I start helped start that program uh I was assistant uh B basb and baseball coach at candyville I was assistant uh when we Consolidated I was assistant basketball coach along with Jim Alvi was also assistant and Coach Davenport was the coach and then uh I stayed uh coach Bill Lee which was my old high school coach came the next year and I was with him for two or three years and you know from and I I sound like a CO Old Coach that co uh Athletics is great it's great for the kids uh it's if nothing else it keeps them busy and the kids who were in athletics the kids who were in band the kids who were in the clubs uh never got in trouble because they wanted to participate and we went from kville LV and Clarkson all we had was basketball boys basketball baseball and cross country the last few years and they went now Clarkson had a girls basketball team the last year we were there that girls basketball was just coming in but when we went to Grayson Kane high school we had of course uh boys basketball baseball track and field uh I don't think we had golf at the time but then we had girls basketball and uh did not have softball but the girls until that time did not have a sport in Grayson County you had to be if you want to be an ath a girl athlete you had to be a cheerleader and and so um that was one of the things on consolidation we were able to offer a lot more academic programs a lot more athletic programs a lot more clubs and um it was just good for the county I know I was told that one of your sayings that has stuck with students even from back when you were at the high school was driving is a privilege not a right and I'm told there's a story behind this what is the story well the story behind it is we had uh 123 00 teenagers Under One Roof that's too many right there and they still have that and I still think it's too many Under One Roof but uh we had the parking lot about 300 student vehicles in the parking lot and uh as teenagers they didn't drive very good back then they still don't drive very good so uh but to control the parking and to control I guess the vehicle traffic or whatever because in the afternoon when we let out it was mad rush to see who get out of there and why we didn't have more wrecks we did I don't know but we never had very many at all but uh the last week or two weeks or three weeks of school uh things kind of would get out of hand always and they still do I'm sure but to control it a little bit I would get on the PA system the reason it became a saying is I'd get on PA system about two weeks before school's out and say all right people remember driving is a privilege it's not a right you do not have to drive from drive to school and if you don't drive right you won't drive and so yeah that's something that I still hear you know driving is privilege I love it I know that I have a middle school principal at a line that still will stick into my head I think you you have the choice to make today a great day or not that choice is up to you and and it still sticks into my head and I love those things that's right uh now here's the the question I know that you might have former students or colleagues that are working with you now and they're saying I haven't heard much from him recently what fills up your time today well the same thing all retired people in Florida do we we do try to exercise every day at least walk or ride bicycle and so forth you know try to try to keep a little conditioning but the old retired people in Florida like to eat sleep uh play cards play shuffle board walk walk on the beach um a lot of eating out we have a lot of playing cards we have a little group about 16 or 18 of us who play cards once a week play shuffle board once a week uh depends on who is here because some of them are part-time coming from the north and some of them fulltime and depends on who has come north we might eat out every day for a week and uh so it it's mostly sleep and eat sounds like a pretty good life to me it it can't get much better than this you've and I always tell I dealt with retirement when I was in the school system and I always told everyone retire as soon as you possibly can that doesn't mean when you get 27 years in that means when you get your Ducks lined up so when you get all your Ducks lined up retire because there's nothing like it my mom just retired as an educator a couple of years ago and I think she would be in full agreement with you as well I know I haven't met very many teachers who wanted to go back now some go back Park time to help help out uh and you know some some administrators will retire in Kentucky and go to another state I never wanted to do that and I have some friends that did and that's great but uh once I retired of course I had 36 years in I was ready to get out after 36 years I appreciate you you beat Butler County is a good win for them uh first win of the season for the soccer too brother that's a beat down all right thanks to Miss Cox for letting us know about that scoring it's it's real simple Grayson County scored on their last play of the first quarter a 22 yard touchdown run by Colby Chaffin they went for two got it let 8 to zero and then turnover on down Punt and so on and a 16 yd pass from nean jic to Redmond uh made it a 8 to7 game and Ken that's that's where we stand baseball score baby I tell you I look for uh we're about a minute away or so from the beginning of the second half I look for you know as talking off air I I look for the Cougars to bounce back here after kind of a tough you know you hate to be too hard on these kids cuz they're kids but didn't have the the best second quarter Sam did not have the best and the issues the way I saw it were number one our offensive line the Cougar's offensive line was handled pretty well I thought in this particularly the second half of that second quarter so that's got to be remedied uh but hopefully uh you know Brian Coach Jones has got these guys they were they were certainly loud enthusiastic 10 to8 we're joined Now by Coach Jones and Coach what was your message to the team after I mean this was this was a a a tough game you know I I I I try to be honest as I can be with our team and I just told him that's two years in a row I feel like they have physically just taken us behind the Woodshed and wore us out physically uh they were the more physical team and um you know I thought for the first half I thought we did a better job in the second half we didn't result in any drives finishing but uh you know I thought they controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the wall um and uh you know then the other message I had was preparation um you know being a winner or a champion is not something you just show up and do Success is Not an Accident you know you don't step into a mud puddle and it turns to Gold uh it's it's hard work sweat tears blood and um you know that's something that uh I think we still got to learn um you know you win Monday through Thursday as you prepare for a team and then Friday is just kind of going through uh all the work that you done throughout the week and um you know and I you know I I I just can't wholeheartedly say that we're winning Monday through Thursday uh in the weight room practice field conditioning um you know I I feel like they handled the heat the conditions the humidity um you know now don't get me wrong they got 90 guys on the roster so I don't know how many guys that are playing both ways where we're playing a bunch cuz we've got 35 freshman and sophomores um but you know for me I I'm going to put myself in a position to play for 48 minutes and never come off I I want to play every second of every game and Coach is going to have to drag me off the field um and I I think we've still got some work to do in those areas and uh you know I I I I don't pull no punches with them I I told him exactly that we've we've got to win Monday through Thursday and um you know I thought we had a pretty good week of practice but I mean you know I know Matthew broke his collar bone and I hate that CU he you know for all temp purposes you know had a good week last week he was playing just fine this week um I feel like he's somebody you look at him and see that he is putting in work in the weight room dude shredded up um you know he's in great condition he's fast he can do a lot of things uh and so you hate to see a guy that I think is putting in a lot of effort to earn his spot uh you know have that but um you know I feel like you know physically they just beat the crap out of us I mean we were dropping like flies and um you know we get inside the 20 I don't know three four times and don't score that's on me 100% we got to be able to finish drives uh I probably should have went to the eye sooner and um you know ran the option and this that and the other but uh you know there's there's a lot of things I think that could be said about this game from some other standpoints but you know I'm not going to be one that that makes an excuse about fixating or late hits and different things like that because if you do your job none of that matters because you Wi on the scoreboard um and and we didn't win on the scoreboard um so two years in a row they've got us and heck they were prepared with a heck of a Fourth of July fireworks show I I'd say they had no doubt that they felt like they were going to win this game and um I don't know it's just uh it hurts and uh you know the other the last thing I told him is is I'm not sure we hate to lose and if you hate to lose you don't prepare to win you prepare so hard that you can't fail um and and you're doing all these extra things to make sure that failure is not even a possibility and uh you know I I think we don't like to lose I think we really like to win but you know for me I I'll be honest with you um you know winning is great but but it's great because I I I like the kids to enjoy it and things like that for me I I don't get all rah rah excited about a win I can't stand to lose I absolutely hate losing with a passion and um you know this kind of stuff uh drives me um you know where I'm not sleeping at night and I'm looking back and trying to find ways for us to get better so that we don't lose cuz I there's nothing I mean I just can't right now think anything worse than losing in sport um and uh I I don't I don't know we we've we've got to have a better hatred of losing Evan you gave him two chances and I mean listen they'd have been good from 60 I mean he's got a he's got a great leg I know you mentioned before the game to me probably not thinking you'd be in the situation where I think you kind of joked saying that he doesn't think he's a kicker so because of that he doesn't think about the kick I think was kind of the long story short of what you had what you had said what was what's your message to him with him no and I'm not saying that it is by any I know that but I mean that's what I told him I said this ain't got nothing to do with you I mean he did his job we're yeah I mean we're we're in a position there um you know and and I would have it would have been great Cinderella story he hits one of those two field goals and we win by one um but uh you know he he he maybe has kicked 40 field goals that I know of in his life I mean like there the last two weeks too right and there's so many nuances to field goal kicking and steps and routine and all this other stuff I mean you know if you watch those guys in the NFL they're they're they're strange dudes uh you know they sit off by themselves and kick aund kicks into the net all night long and I mean and you know he's playing another position and and uh you know trying to learn that as well and um you know we should have done our job offensively and and scored at least a couple of times while we were in the Red Zone uh and then those two kicks don't even matter Kobe Chapin I thought was making uh something we talked about during the broadcast coach was his decision making for most of this game was very strong so to lose him late like you did it's got to be a blow but talk about Jake brater he came in gave you a chance to win the football game you know Jake is um a gamer I mean there's no doubt about it uh come in last year in the playoffs in the second half and I thought did a really good job I I I don't remember for you know 100% certainty but I I'm I think we may have outscored him in the second half uh with him at quarterback marches us down the field right here uh puts us in a position to try to kick a field goal to win the game um you know the one thing that I'll say about about Jake and I and I would say this with him standing here right beside us is I'd like to see him work harder at his craft U he's got the talent you know he is very athletic he's got a strong arm uh um you know I do think that at practice you know when he's not in he is somebody that stands behind us a lot of times and we'll go through plays on air by himself and uh and I believe that's why he's come a long way over the last year cuz he was doing that last season um but you know I I would like to see him you know putting more time into film and everything like that but heck you know two years in a row he's been put in position um and I think he's handled both of them yeah I mean I think he's handled them as good as as any person could want their backup to play um you know I thought he read our uh our option stuff there good um made some good decisions on some of the throws and um you know I he he did everything we needed him to do um you know it would been nice to pick up a first down there and be able to continue to try to maybe punch one in maybe get more to the middle of the field for the field goal but uh can't ask any more out of Jake to come in in that situation and and uh you know cuz I thought he did an absolute outstanding job thought the Run game for the second straight week was stronger in the second half than it was in the first half adjustment just how it goes or I think you start to get a feel for what they're giving you and um you know and maybe it's me you I I I'll say probably sometimes I try to probably do too much um you know and try to out scheme people maybe and maybe I just need to dial some things back and uh get in the eye and and run right at people with some of the option and different stuff like that I don't know but um it uh you know I thought eud ran real hard I thought H Shaw ran hard I thought you know our quarterback runs were good um you know I thought those guys did a really good job running the ball and we were far better running it than we were throwing it tonight for sure did you can I interject something here something that I noticed during the broadcast uh I thought the left side of your line offensive line was creating qu is there something going on just more experience on that side or am wrong but that certainly it appeared to me that left side was you were get creating some space for for uh the running backs you know I mean I think we're pretty I mean I would say that we're pretty equally balanced um you know we did bring in um Carter Dennis on the left side at guard they probably somewhere late in the third quarter uh which he's a big big guy and um and so he's he's quite a bit bigger than madx Anderson is as our Right Guard but um uh I I didn't notice that um I something now that you said it I'll look back on film and watch let me know if I'm full of crap or not uh but um you know I thought you know uh I I I would have liked to seen our pass protection be a little bit better um you know I felt like Kobe was on the ground a lot and um you know I thought he did a good job standing in there and making some throws but uh you know I think we're talented at our skill positions that we've we've got to be able to throw some I mean everybody again I've said this before but everybody knows who k is and and you know people are going to stack the box to try to stop us on the Run game and so we've got to have uh some some better pass protection and maybe that's something we need to look at is you know how we're how we are pass protecting I don't know but um it just um it's very un unfortunate uh you know for two years in a row to to lose this game because we have no business in my opinion losing this game um and it's you know like I said it's on me um you know I I I'll take credit for every loss we get and uh and and none for the win so it uh we got to do a better job getting these guys ready for Friday night and it doesn't get any easier McAn County's no slouch um they're going to be physical they're going to play hard they're going to do a lot of odd things to try to get you outnumbered and um you know it takes a a a hefty week of preparation to stop them offensively because all the different motions and formations and uh you you can't prepare for it all you know as much as they do and um you you got to try to they're throwing the ball more this year too I think too uh yeah they they feel they feel good about this kid's arm um but uh last you know last week they they were run heavy um you know uh they got a kid number six that I think rushed for 230 yards or something so um we uh you know we got to try to get healthy and uh get ready for for next week you led right into the next question so I don't he had some good runs as well and so Kobe Chaffin is yeah I thought he played an outstanding game and and and his decision making tonight was was was very very very good absolutely so kobby Chaffin didn't turn out to be that way but here's the biggest thing with this is this game in the long run means nothing because this isn't District mhm it's it technically matters when it comes to RPI but by that point it's your third round of the playoffs when that matters and if you're there then then you're you're celebrating anyways but you get the opportunity to I you know the old saying goes either win or you learn right and the Cougars get the chance to learn after this game and I think the biggest thing is is same thing as this time last year that Kaylor and I were talking about it's time to be the hammer right it is hard to be the hammer and I I talk I took what coach BR Jones said uh you know it's very interesting that he approached uh his postgame interview talking about preparation he feels as if they're not preparing they don't hate you know something that you've heard about Michael Jordan and some other great athletes they hate losing more than they love winning and I grew up like that I understand that I had a father that was like that okay but not every kid uh understands that and and that's a mindset and uh and it affects everything you do in your preparation and so I'm sure Coach Jones will will will get that point across but you know to take up for these kids I thought they battled you know he's the coach they battled I thought they battled hard I didn't see
