needing to get down to their 53 man roster is important time that means roster moves are flying so let's start with some of the moves that happened with the Champs in Kansas City well the Chiefs have a number of wide receiver decisions to make and before they subtract from that room they added a familiar face today signing Juju Smith Shuster to a deal a minimum deal but bring him back to a familiar spot and it's somebody else that Patrick Mahomes knows one more added Target for number 50 and there are a lot of names to track and chart the next few days that could be traded that could be released we've got a bunch of chiefs wide receivers you got John mey in Houston Allan Robinson with the Giants Malik Willis with the Titans Taylor HEI with the fans some big names there that are worth tracking as teams get ready to pair their rosters down from 90 to 53 that's 1184 transactions here coming up in the days ahead and then of of course we go to the Dolphins who placed a few players today on the physically unable to perform list Isaiah win Bradley chub go to pup that means that they will miss a minimum of four games that's a loss on the offensive line a loss on the defensive line don't know that either one surprises Miami it is what they expected and fortunately for them last week the Dolphins got Jaylen Phillips back and the Browns also are going to leave Nick chub on the physically unable to perform L to open the season making him eligible to play the first four games this season they still expect him to come back and contribute at some point this year but they know how serious that injury that he suffered last year was and they want to make sure they take their time and get him right and that he's just close to being healthy as he can be when he does return this season which is expected it just will not be during the first four games of the Season yeah rooting for him to get back out there and it'll be fun to see him play whenever he does again but it is the reality the chubs like out for a stretch right plus deshun Watson coming off an injury without seeing any preseason action Mina what's the biggest thing that Kevin stefansky needs to figure out in terms of scheme with this offense yeah I think they're still figuring out what the identity is with Thea Watson which sounds wild given that he's been on the team now for so long but obviously um has not played a lot of football you saw last year when they made the change to Joe Flaco really what I think the truest expression of a Kevin stefansky offense is explosive plays uh coming from that under Center play action that's not what deshun Watson does best I thought it was very telling Laura some of the hires they made this season were very telling going out bringing Ken dorsy from Buffalo as the offensive coordinator and then dipping into the college game and bringing in Tommy Reese as their pass game coordinator uh reading the tea leaves what that suggests to me is that they want to have a more robust RPO game H to come off of deshun Watson being in the gun I don't know if it'll work but I feel like they're trying to figure out okay here's our quarterback in 2024 what does he do West best part of me how can we build an efficient Run game off of that and that feels like the starting point there's two ways to create chunk explosive big plays in football really number one is you have an unbelievably talented one-on-one wide receiver and you just get him the football number two are the play action game and to mea point that was the real fundamental difference between this offense with DeShawn and Joe flacko and I don't know how this offense is going to be explosive not being in the play action game Amari is awesome but he's not that Julio Jones type of one-on-one wide receiver and if you go back to last year and rewatch some of the games the Tennessee game that Deshawn played solid in the Arizona game that Deshawn played solid in there still isn't a high level of play action pass success it is a little bit more of maybe a broken play here or a dink and dunk offense there and quick passing game and so we get asked all the time like what do we expect it's the only team in the league that I'm really it's really hard to say anything yeah you know definitively I don't know who they're going to be scheme-wise and I just don't know who Deshawn is as a player load alone in whatever scheme they're going to deploy yeah and on a much simpler level right Watson and chub have been on the field together for just 150 plays in the last two Seasons when we talk about their two best offensive players supposedly they just don't play a lot we're back on NFL live and how about Trevor Lawrence they're uh playing the Falcons Friday the preseason finale this is early first quarter nice to Brian Thomas Jr the gain of 38 yard stand yeah I love the play Action Thomas on the big Crosser which was really nice to see you see a little bit of juice out of Trevor Lawrence and then down in the Red Zone this throws perfect it's face mask or higher waist belt or lower and that's up high for Evan Ingram beautiful placement by Trevor Lawrence yeah nice to see him get something going in the Red Zone too after he struggled there last season there another one to Parker Washington that for the first down the Jags still driving and then you love this play another great throw and and the reality is watching him throw it the way he did if if he can get to that level for the Jags they got a chance to win the division and he will be in the MVP conversation so something else to point out with the Improvement we think we've seen from Trevor early he really struggled against man defense in 2023 he ranked dead last out of 32 qualified players in both touchdown to interception ratio and passer rating last year against man it's an incredibly small sample size but he's been much better in this preseason he's four for five with two touchdowns no interceptions and a passer rating north of 135 against man ball placement and people to throw the ball to in man coverage are the two primary things and there's an improvement in both areas so far yeah giving him the answers to the test a little bit we like it Amina what did you make of Lawrence's preseason performance yeah I love that point about the struggles against man coverage those the two biggest reasons why quarterbacks put those kinds of numbers and you have seen thus far already in the preseason um that these Jaguars skill players are going to get open I mean Brian Thomas Jr on the Crosser off of play action just seeing that just warmed my heart because that's exactly what I I don't want Brian Thomas Jr just out there running go routes I want him on crossers I want them to use him heavily in the play action passing game I want with the ball in his hands Evan Ingram of course being uh so reliable what what watched me or what struck me rather watching Trevor though wasn't so much about the scheme it was just the aggression I mean some of those throws that Dan pointed out on on his tapes those are not throws that every quarterback in the NFL not only is capable of making but has the self-belief to make so to see him still aggressively attacking that is what you want to see but what we need to see and what we won't know is whether or not this offensive line can protect him we've been waiting for Trevor to like just take this bull by the horns and go at it with the incredible skill set that he has let his hair down if you will I think we're kind of seeing it in the preseason time to read and react that was for you Dan to some other performances from the preseason finale let's start with Anthony Richardson who was asked about some of his offt Target passes I'm going to miss some some passes the receiver is going to drop some you know we going to drop the ball sometimes but it's cool stuff like that going to happen and then when it comes to people just talking man that's that don't really fase me much cuz people been talking pretty much my whole life so it's like okay just add fuel to the fire you know I'm just going to do me and just keep doing me no matter what anybody else say so I'm not really worried about it yeah I think the biggest thing in India is for everyone to get in the same page when you as an offense give your offensive skill players flexibility after the snap to change your routes both the quarterback and receiver got to see it the same way the tight end has a little bit of a sit here now they give him Indie gives him the freedom to pull away from coverage Anthony expects him to sit there he throws one route the receiver the tight end runs a different route then there's a pick six now ad Mitchell they rookie on the crossing route it's man coverage if the defender stays on your back hip you want to flatten this well Anthony throws it a little higher thinking he's going to go up field ad flattens it I'm fan of ads there Anthony's got to see it the same way this time ad in the slot the defense is going to play man under two safeties you're going to see Anthony Richardson try to split those safeties with a ball in between that hash but ad stops his feet thinking he's going to pull away and so three examples of where you might sit there and go oh my gosh Anthony Richardson how did you miss those throws it's really more about both pass Catcher And quarterback seeing the defense change and seeing it at the same time properly more than an inaccurate throw with his injury last year too trying to get on the same page give him some Grace they'll get there how about Bryce Young by the way a standout preseason performance that had his head coach Dave Canales excited oh it was great right couldn't have couldn't have dreamt it better you know a nice long drive 12 plays to get the guys some good work get him tired in the drive you know um a fourth down conversion in there but saw him extend plays with his legs keeping his eyes down the field finding guys Mina what did you make of your first look at Bryce young and that Dave Canalis offense yeah I'm with Dave I thought he looked decisive and then when he had to extend particularly on the fourth down you saw some of the playmaking you saw in college what I was really interested Laura though in seeing was in seeing what this Dave Canales offense would look like because Dave you know he he worked under uh Shane Waldren with the ram so there's that DNA but what he did in Tampa was different and I think what we saw that I found really interesting and Dan I'd love to hear your thoughts on this is they're getting to the play action passing game out of the gun and the pistol because last year the Panthers had a lot of trouble they wanted Bice in the gun for I think obvious reasons or pistol but they couldn't really get to the play action passing attack from there so the passing game and the run run game felt siloed what I saw admittedly in just one drive is that they are figuring out a way to sort of marry those things and I think uh that's going to be really good for Bryce this year yeah specifically to the Gunplay action I've always been a Believer it's way better out of the pistol if you're trying to go downhill than an offset or if it's an offset back meaning to the side of the quarterback you really want it to be a big time horizontal stretch so I agree with the play action stuff I also love the different cut splits they got the receivers in I don't know if they necessarily make we'll see with Xavier Legette how just physically dominant he can be but how much can they help those receivers get away from some coverages and some Hands-On defensive technique um I I think the biggest thing was Bryce looked like a guy that believed in the play calls and the people around him and there was for for [Music] [Music] [Music] speee for fore for Fore fore bye
