How Apple Keynotes Became a Meme Fest…

Intro Apple's keynot have changed gun are the days of wide backdrops and those iconic but kind of stiff speeches now we've got Craig jumping out of a plane or Tim doing some Mission Impossible stuns it's like they took a page out of Hollywood's Playbook and you know what it's working Apple's still dominating sales are wild but when did this switch happen and what sparked it before diving into the exact Turning Point let's break down what an Apple event really is to some it's the Super Ball of tech events like Christmas for Apple Fans others they might say it's just a flash sheet to our commercial back in the Steve Jobs era these events had a formula they would kick off with a warm welcome usually jobs or Craig would walk on stage and the room would light up right after that they would dive into the update section sales figures product success all that good stuff but it was strategic this part would subtly build excitement about what's coming next slowly hyping up the crowd then came the big reveal slick ad a demo of the new iPhone or whatever product was about to drop followed by a deep dive into why it was so revolutionary and of course the legendary one more thing moment where Apple always had one final trick of his sleep classic one more thing one more thing one more thing one more thing one more thing FaceTime video calling Apple watch MacBook Air Apple music Apple Vision Pro it's one of the most amazing things we've ever created remember the The old vs new days when Steve Jobs took the stage back then Apple kyotes felt almost personal like you were sitting in a oneon-one chat jobs had nothing more than a clicker in his hand a product in front of him and a simple screen behind him was all about the product clean straightforward powerful and honestly that worked when Apple was still on its way to becoming the tech giant it is today fast forward to today's Apple events it all looks pretty familiar at first Tim Cook kicks things off with a smile we get some numbers about sales a few milestones and then boom a big reveal complete with flashy ads and speeches about how it's going to change everything then they even throw in the famous one more thing once in a while even with all the similarities the vibe has completely shifted so what's changed here's the thing Apple cracked the code to making these Keynotes more than just product launches they added Showmanship why have Craig just walk on stage when he can parachute in why stick to one stage AG when you can use drones location shifts and camera tricks they transformed their Keynotes into many Productions this wasn't just a stay trendy was a calculated move to capture new audiences attention spans are shrinking and the old guy with a clicker in a stage wasn't cut in it anymore Apple realized Apple wanted more drama more spectacle and they delivered by turning Kos into fullon Productions so after all that hype and buildup this year's September event yeah it felt pretty me no wild surprises no J drin reveals just talks about product features in different locations sure those slick transitions were still there keeping things moving but nothing that blew your The Show [Music] mind apples really mastered the art of turn their product reveals into cinematic experiences right it's no longer just about the specs or the tech it's about the feeling they create I mean sure we all remember iconic moments like pulling the magbook air out of the tiny envelope or jobs repeating phone and music player an internet Communicator during the iPhone reveal those were legendary but now it's like they leveled up the whole thing the production value in their recent events is on another level and it's not just for show it's about reinforcing that image of prestige Apple's way of saying we don't just make products we create experiences it's that extra polish that keeps the brand feeling premium like they're always one step ahead now the product reveal videos that's where Apple shines those are like many movies I mean the way they show the new Apple watch with that liquid metal effect just kiss it took me right back to the iPhone 5S launch Vibes and the X-ray style tear down of the iPhone 16 Pro that's going to be one of the coolest reveals I've seen in a while if you've got your eye on the new iPhones you probably already know the next step getting iPhones washes and airpods make their lives better slightly produced heartwarming and leaves no room for you to go nah that's just a gimmick it's like they've mastered the art of making you need those new features even when you didn't know you wanted them so yeah while the events might seem the same on the surface they've evolved in a pretty significant way it's more than just just a different structure it's about how they subtly shifted The [Music] Where are the jokes? Narrative let's talk about humor for a second it's wild how much has changed right back in the day especially around the early 2010s humor was basically non-existent in apple events like sure Steve Jobs might have thrown in a light joke here and there but he didn't need humor to keep people hooked the whole vibe of the event was already super exciting thanks to job's Charisma and the mind-blowing products being shown off felt serious almost like you were watching something made for investors and teag Geeks not everyday people but honestly those events had a different Focus they were all about the devices themselves you get a deep dive into how each feature worked why it mattered and how it was going to change your life it was pure Tech no FRS just raw Innovation the stuff that put apple on the map fast forward to today and it's a whole different story all right let's Dive Right In now Apple events are loaded with fun moments you've got slick transitions funny ads and even some straight up jokes the whole thing feels way more relaxed like Apple's trying to bring you into the fult and not just show off you're not just watching they want you to feel like you're part of the event and that shift it all ties back to Apple's new game plan selling even more Apple's always been amazing at marketing but now it's another level every word every ad every little detail it's all designed to sell it's not just here's what new it's here's why you need this in your life like yesterday and it's planned engineered and scripted to hit those emotional beats now you might be thinking wasn't Apple always about selling even during Steve's time and yeah you're right but back then it was way more subtle the devices spoke louder than the marketing now the marketing is the event it's less about what the device does and more about how it's presented how it makes you feel and how it fits into your life Apple has gone from being just a tech company to being a fall on Lifestyle brand and you see that shift in every The turning point [Music] keynote so a lot has changed over time and the big question is when did it all shift in Apple's history there is a really clear divide in line before Steve Jobs and after Steve Jobs when Steve passed away in 2011 it wasn't just a huge loss for fans like us it felt like a good punch to the company in one moment Apple lost not just its Visionary but the person who for most of us was Apple the company was left with this huge seemingly impossible question how do we move forward without the man who was the heart and soul of everything the world was watching and the pressure was massive Apple had to figure out how to move forward while still keeping Steve's Legacy alive and honestly those next few years were they were different Keynotes felt strange unlike anything would seen before since was like apple was in this wild face mix of fun experiments and and careful optimism searching for its new [Music] Crack marketing team identity wbdc 2014 one of the strangest and most hilarious Apple events ever you know how Apple events usually start right motivational video check inspirational stories check a bit of humor sprinkled in sure why not so at first everything seemed pretty sted but then Craig pigi walks on stage and that's when things got wild now Craig here's the funny guy at Apple every workplace has one the guy who's always cracking jokes super positive you know the type and it's a huge contrast to Tim Cook who's more serious reserved and straight to the point so throughout the event felt like a roller coaster of tone shifts every time these two swap places Craig started on veiling feature after feature and with each one he drop a joke and not just any jokes crack product marketing team this is where we got the infamous crack marketing team line for the very first time along along with some other let's say iow raisin jokes that maybe wouldn't fly today let me put it this way in just under a minute I counted two jokes about substances one about B testicles and one about well let's call it wide trash it was like rapid fire now I'm not going to break down the Craig marketing team joke for you we're all adults here right but what's crazy is Craig liked it so much that it became a regular part of almost every event since fast forward to 2021 crack marketing team yep still there and in wwc 2024 crack marketing team you bet it made a comeback along with one more High joke for a good measure they really don't make apple Kos like they used [Music] It wasn’t planned to you know one of my alltime favorite moments from those all Steve Jobs events has to be when Steve was trying to show off how fast the new iPhone 4 was but somehow the iPhone 3GS loaded the web page faster just watch how nervous Steve was in that clip I mean someone definitely got fired that evening now you could call it a blooper but honestly those little hiccups that was the charm of all Apple events they weren't script down to the Last Detail and there was always this element of unpredictability remember when Steve got frustrated with a camera not working and literally tossed it into the crowd that wasn't in the script and that's exactly why it was so memorable these days Apple does everything to prevent those awkward moments every demo you see now is perfectly planned polished and executed the last major fail I can think of was with the iPhone 10 event where face ID didn't work on stage ho ho ho since then feels like they've been on a mission to make sure nothing ever goes wrong again it's safe but does it have the same magic I think they need to bring back some of that unpredictability sure life demos can be risky for the brand image but they make the event feel real like you might not remember the last Google event but I bet you remember the time the app just wouldn't work during their demo check my calendar and see if I'm free when she's coming to San Francisco this year let's see if the demo Spirits are with us today nope uh-oh looks like looks like they're not with us those whoops moments stick with you and they are what made Apple koses fun and Unforgettable take the latest event for example everything was so perfect nothing went wrong no real life demo that had the potential to fail it's great for a show and Apple's reliability but at the same time it felt too polished especially considering half of the features won't even be available at lunch like apple intelligence since June we've been hearing about how great it is and betas of iOS give us a glimpse into that but standing on stage and saying stuff like available soon is not what we wanted this pre-planning of the events went so far that there was not a single flaw like there was last year with the iPhone 15 losing his Dynamic Island in one shot this year everything was spotless and [Music] Know it all perfect you know it's not just about the events themselves I mean I enjoy the new Apple style I love the show they put on but what I don't love not being surprised anymore leaks and rumors are everywhere and yeah I get it me and a bunch of other YouTubers pretty much live off of them but if I was just a regular buyer I would actually prefer to go in blind no leaks no spoilers those days where you didn't know what Apple was going to pull out of their head yeah those are a long gun and let's be real they're never coming back Apple's just too big now too Global they've got over 160,000 people working there it's it's impossible to keep everything on reps the supply chains the production processes all of it is just too massive and in every step there's someone ready to sell their insight to the Press even third party casemakers are leaking designs and CAD models for some quick exposure everything's public and honestly it doesn't seem like apple even cares anymore this is where new Apple and the old Apple are so different back in 2010 if something leaked Apple was Furious they did whatever it took to shut down the noise remember the infamous iPhone 4 bar incident s engineer left the Prototype iPhone 4 in the bar disguised in a rubber case that made it look like a 3Gs the guy who found it SE the photos to Media outlets and night Bank Steve Jobs was not happy you can bet that engine year didn't have a job much longer after that all the 16 Pro leaks were true down to the last bit the bigger displays the new color the camera control button there was nothing surprising at the event every feature was already known for months at this point and it's really sad it really is it would have been nice to have something unexpected some one more thing the fact that we even get the leaks make every new iPhone seem less of an upgrade the 16 Pro might not be that different from the 15 Pro but just because we knew everything about it before made every change seem even less important bigger screen awesome more battery yeah but since we already knew all that months ago just didn't hit the same you're like call bigger phone but it doesn't feel like a huge leap forward and the leaks also had us hyped for things that didn't happen like the airpods we thought we' get updated airpods Max but all they did was slap on a USBC Port no better noise cancellation it's like well come on same goes for the watch 10 rumors were hyping up but total redesign something epic for the 10th anniversary but what did we get basically the same watch slightly bigger screen and a new Jed black color remember the iPhone 7 in 2016 yeah that black it's like leaks raised the bar and then the event just doesn't quite reach it but are these leaks we see today really leaks or is this all part of some genius marketing strategy by Apple no one seems to care during the actual events everyone just rolls with it I guess we'll never Way forward [Music] now you know the direction Apple Keynotes are heading in is pretty predictable at this point no need to guess it's more of the same these events have basically turned into giant shows that double as ads and we're going to see more of that expect even crazier transitions Craigs jokes you know the ones and of course everything being shot on iPhones at least that's what I'm hoping for but hey if Apple suddenly decides to throw it back and do an old school event you won't hear me complaining things have changed the
