hi little school it is week four of our distance learning it has been almost a month since we have launched our online learning and you guys have been doing a really great job most of you is still completing your assignments still working hard taking the feedback and using it to improve if you have not been checking in with me I just want to give you a reminder check in with me once a week on our team or you can email me or you can text me to let me know how you're doing and to let me know if you need any help or just to say hey I'm here I'm still online so last week our lesson dealt with this Beethoven symphony and this symphony was everybody probably has recognized it and this symphony was written like I had told you in the last video at a time in Beethoven's life where he was beginning to go deaf and so for a musician and a composer one can only imagine what he must have been feeling at that time now the question had asked and this is the one where a bunch of us got caught up and I think what happened was we need to just read the directions and the student responds a little bit clearer to get that background information so it says about the Classical period now there's something you need to understand there is a genre of music called classical music which would be orchestral music that's something you'd hear at the symphony or played on a piano at a formal concert or something like that but there are time periods in the arts as well and so the classical time period which was from 1750 to 1820 was a time period that was practicing and creating music and art and architecture and a very simple and controlled style very symmetrical starts that starts and ends the same way but then that time period is different than the genre so then you move into romantic music and that doesn't mean in love lovey-dovey it just means that it was a time period following the Classical period where music started to become very emotional so the Beethoven piece that you heard was actually written during the Romantic era you can hear the emotion in his work you can hear that it had a lot more substance it was a little bit controlled or a little bit less controlled so even though it's classical music it was written in the Romantic era and a lot of you had mentioned that he might have been feeling angry or upset based off of what you heard at the beginning and I think that that's a really great way to tie into what was going on in his life at that time which was his initial descent into going deaf maybe the feelings he was experiencing during that time in his life were being communicated in this music so this next portion is very important for you to listen to directions on in if you're working strictly out of the packet after that lesson if you look at the top of the paper it says lesson four six through eight unfortunately there were not any resources provided in this for you to listen to to complete this lesson so you will not be doing lesson 4 6 through 8 everybody will be going to lesson 5 which is this one right here you see the 5 at the top and it is still about classical and romantic styles so our essential question for this week is how does musicians make creative decisions when you're creating anything how do you make the decision on what to create where does it come from and our discussion question how did changes in style affect your creative decisions so style has changed a lot even within the last year how do stylistic changes in maybe culture or fashion or what's on TV how does that affect your creative decision making if you were to make a piece of music or make a piece of art this year as opposed to two years ago how might the styles that we're living in and experiencing affects your decision-making so Student Response imagine yourself as a composer of music you can either write in a classical style or in the romantic style which style would you prefer so remember classic is simple symmetrical very structured and very controlled and romantic is a lot more emotional there's more freedom to explore different pathways in the music and it's really expressive so what would you choose what would influence your choice why would what if you chose classical what influences you to want to create in that way that is controlled and structured and simple or if you chose romantic why would you choose to create in that style being it more expressive has something happened in your life or are you feeling some kind of a way we're composing music might give you an outlet to express that feeling the next would be what would be your inspiration so just as I just said if you were creating a piece of music what would inspire you something going on in your life something going on in the world right now we're living in a time unlike any other so there's probably going to be a lot of creativity that comes out of this pandemic so that could be a huge influence or it could be that you just got a new dog or you made a new friend something like that to influence your inspiration for a composition and how can you communicate your inspiration to your audience so through your music what would you use what elements of music would you use to communicate your inspiration if it was that you were angry about something what kind of dynamics the Louds and softs what kind of tempo would you use to create or to communicate your inspiration if you were feeling very soft and serene what might you use would you you would you use very soft music with a slower tempo so think about the elements of music and describe those and how you would communicate your inspiration to your audience all right now next packet distribution will be May 18th in that packet will be new music assignments and it will be a little bit more interactive and hopefully a little bit more fun for you this time around the music teachers in the district got together and we created some of these lessons and so they're short activities that you'll be able to complete within 5-10 minutes at home and they will give you a little bit more of a hands-on music music making experience allow you to access your creative sign allow you to access that part of you that uses your emotions and feelings to express yourself through music so I will be back next week to guide you through the new lessons that are in the packet and also these lessons will be online in teams as always if you have any questions reach out to me on teams through email or through a text message or call and I'll be here to support you and if you can't get a hold of me if I'm in a meeting or something like that I'll get back to you as soon as possible have a great week middle school bye
