REACTION: Kirby Smart Has RELOADED The Georgia Football Roster...

Intro South Eastern 14 talking college football I'm Chase Robinson as we recap SCC spring games uh that have happened over the last couple of weeks and we're going to talk some Georgia Bulldogs football today pulmer Toms joins us from dogs HQ and uh we're g to get some insight on the Georgia Bulldogs but first got to remind you about our friends over at bet online your number one source for course always looking to reload at Georgia number of players not back from last year I feel like we have this convers every year about Georgia football just looking to to reload how do you feel uh the the staff was able to do and and bringing in some guys to replace some really key pieces to uh to last year's Georgia Bulldog football team yeah Chase appreciate you having me on and you're right you know we're a week out from the NFL draft and and it's you know you're counting up the guys that could go from Georgia and you've hit double digits for a third straight year um you know does Georgia hit that number TBD but but you're losing a lot of guys you're losing guys to the NFL you're losing guys to the transfer portal um but like you said it's not a rebuild it's a Reload at Georgia and um you know I I think that Georgia did a good job of getting a group ready for 2024 that is more than capable of competing for a championship um you know you look at the success the track record that Georgia and Kirby Smart have had uh in the last couple of Seasons always always competitive I think that this new change of of a 12 team playoff is really going to benefit Georgia and you're going to see the Bulldogs consistently in there um you know they've got the pieces on both sides of the ball starts with the quarterback position Carson Beck but you've got a lot of guys around him obviously you're working to replace a generational type tight end and Brock Bowers but you bring in Trevor eten from the transfer portal you bring in Kobe young from the transfer portal uh two guys that have been power five contributors at Florida and Miami respectively Ben urasc is somebody that didn't see this spring but he's coming in from Stanford at that tight end position does a lot of the same things that Bowers did and if that athleticism can carry over from the Pack 12 to the SEC I think that we're going to see a lot of really good special things out of that Georgia tight end position still um you know you match all that up with an offensive line a couple of receivers that are returning and you feel really good about what Georgia has on offense and then you flip it over to the defensive side of the ball and there's a standard at Georgia and it's cliche but it's true um those guys are always going to play up to the standard you've got several you've got All-American caliber players at every level of the defense from Michel Williams at the line of scrimmage smile mundan at that in that inside linebacker room to Malachi Starks on the back end potentially the best defensive back in all of college football again a lot of get new faces that you're going to be seeing there guys that are having to step up and replace guys that are gone but when you're doing that with four and five star Talent you feel pretty good about what you got if you're Wide Receivers yeah and had a chance to to see the Bulldogs in the spring game and just as far as a receiver group goes because you brought up Brock Bowers a guy who really is is irreplaceable but you look at some of the other receivers that Georgia lost last year like a lad makoni for example uh who had a great career uh there with the Bulldogs it it seems like they the uh the coaching staff had to go out and kind of get several guys to replace maybe one guy talk about some of these guys they've brought in spefic specifically at the receiver position and uh and what was seen from them this spring yeah so they add three at that receiver position plus your second tight end um so that gives you four pass catchers etn out of the back field is somebody that's proving to be a capable pass catcher as well um but in terms of replacing the tight end and the you know wide receiver position because with what Brock Bowers was he essentially was a big wide receiver that could block on the tail end of the line of scrimmage as well so George is looking to replace a lot of receptions is the best way to put it um you know and I think that what they added with Kobe young from Miami is a lot of size He's listed at six foot three by Georgia was listed at six foot five byamy by Miami I think he's probably closer to that six foot five and he certainly plays that way you look at this spring game he had three catches two of them were first down conversions on third down and the third one was a touchdown that's a really good hit rate and contest catches jump ball situations go up and get it that's that's not necessarily a skill set that georg's had in a couple of Seasons um you've the primary guys I mean Brock Bowers was capable of doing that but at the wide receiver spot the primary guys have been smaller quicker route running type guys like lad makoni um you know Dominic love it is somebody that was a transfer this time last year coming in from Missouri and now that he's got a year of experience under his belt I really really liked what we saw from him had over a 100 yards in the in and the game tying touchdown uh in the spring game this past Saturday um and I think you know having talked to love it this spring you can just tell he's that much more comfortable he told us that he and Rah Thomas who was transferring in from Mississippi State at this time last year and also is going to be a key contributor for Georgia this season those two guys last year were spending hours upon hours upon hours in the Playbook that when as soon as they got on campus they asked the coaches hey can we get the full Playbook I know we're going to install it you know four plays at a time uh you know week by week we're gonna we're gonna install it but we want to be prepared for when that's being installed and and that's a lot to handle he said that they would go um you know week by week and and they would run through you know hundreds of plays and they did them in series of four and if they missed one of the four whether it was what the signal meant what the route were supposed to run what everyone else was supposed to do if they missed something in that Fourplay stretch they had to start that Fourplay stretch over again so it that was a lot that was being asked of them to not only learn that but then apply that and be capable contributors this past season I just think that it's gonna come more you know naturally to to love it this season and Thomas too but love it kind of did a lot of the same things as lad makoni lad had that experience in the system I think that we're going to see it really break out this season um like he did on gday so you know those guys whether it's love it Thomas the three transfers that they add Kobe young who I'm the highest on but London humph is from Vanderbilt Michael Jackson from USC um Dylan Bell who returns Aran Smith who returns Anthony Evans who returns they've got a really really really good deep core group of receivers that Kirby thinks he feels really comfortable with the guys that are at the top say the top four or five and then then there's a couple that he said you know and and he didn't necessarily Circle names but you know you can tell that hey there's these three or four guys that if they can get very good key consistent contributions from those guys from two of those guys three of those guys um not necessarily they don't have to hit on every single one of them but if if one of them hits every week and you combine that with what they feel like they've got at the top it's going to be a really really dangerous room and they've got a guy who can get the ball to them as well and Carson Beck who I've been impressed with uh last year and even in his time when he would come in uh when ston Bennett was the the starting quarterback but your thoughts on on Carson Beck his development and and watching him in the spring game and I mean is this a guy that we could talk about being you know uh one of the the best quarterbacks George has seen in a while it's funny you mentioned STS ad minute because I you know I think back to the off season that Stetson had between his first year as the starter in 2021 I guess he started in 2020 but his first full season as the starter and as the guy in 2021 to being having that off season of 2020 you know after that first championship going into the 2022 season where he was unquestionably Georgia's starting quarterback and he went into that second season as the unquestioned starter and just you know took steps forward was a Heisman finalist put up numbers that Georgia hasn't seen in quite some time from that quarterback back position um that's kind of the that's my expectation for Carson Beck is that he's going to have a similar jump um you know again the the weapons that are around him make it his life a lot easier but he makes their lives a lot easier too because he's capable of putting balls in tight spaces um you know making NFL caliber throws and and I do agree with you chase that we're going to be talking about somebody that you know puts up and obviously he's going to have more games to do it you know they play 12 in the regular season they they'll probably play a 13th in the SEC Championship Game you're talking about up to 16 17 games when you when you factor in the expanded playoff he's gonna have more games to put up the stats that Stetson did that you know Matthew Stafford did that Aaron Murray did the great Georgia quarterbacks of recent years um but I think that he's GNA hit that in in the 12 13 14 game range and and and surpass those guys I I think that we are going to be talking about um a guy that is very much in contention to win a Heisman trophy very much in contention to be one of the first quarterbacks taken maybe the first quarterback maybe the first player taken in next year's NFL draft and a guy that is has a really good shot to lead Georgia back to a national championship for the third time in Four Seasons yeah Defense I completely agree with that and and I know you talk about offense and and all the Firepower on offense but a Kirby Smart team team you know is going to have a pretty good defense as well that's his side of the ball uh what do you know about this defense and and I know you mentioned some of the guys who who've been replaced as they look to also reload the defense what do you see the strength of this defense is it the secondary is it the line what what do you like most and and what do you see the strength as for this Bulldog defense yeah to me it's the linebackers that that middle level of the field because if you look at the three levels up front they've got a lot of experience on but it's not necessarily up to the caliber that Georgia maybe was expecting um you don't necessarily have an elite player like they've had in years past with Jordan Davis Devonte Wyatt Jaylen Carter Trayvon Walker those four guys having those four guys on that 2021 defensive line the further that we get away from that the more that I think people realize that that is just not gonna happen ever again in this world of nil and transfer portal you're not going to see four firstr defensive linemen on the same group um and you know trying to replace Jaylen Carter just even Jaylen this past season was a challenge for Georgia Nair Stackhouse Warren Brenson those guys in the middle um you know tried their best but they didn't have the depth that they had that they had when they had four defensive linemen that were first rounders um you know so I I think that they feel good about the defensive line they don't feel great about it they don't necessarily have a game wrecker but and I think in the secondary when you've got three guys one at corner one at star in that nickel position and one at safety that are going pro you've just got a lot to replace there so you've got some questions on the back end you've got some questions up front but right there in the middle you feel really good about what you've got you've got smile mundan returning as a senior in his third year as a starter you've got CJ Allen and railan Wilson two guys that were true freshman last year that played a lot very talented guys coming out of high school very you know proven players uh last season they had some pains they looked like freshman at moments but you you expect to see a jump from year one to year two for them that those two guys are replacing jaman Dumis Johnson who transferred from Georgia to Kentucky he was out the last five games of the season so those guys got a jump start on going ahead and replacing him CJ Allen was in there starting um and playing a he he had been playing a lot of minutes behind jaman already he stepped into Jam's role and did pretty well you know earn two different uh TW two times in three weeks did he earn SEC freshman of the week and led the team in tackles in three of five games so they feel good about what they've got at that linebacker position Jaylen Walker is a guy that they're really excited about um somebody that's got a lot of potential has maybe the build of an outside linebacker but plays in that interior um you know as a run stopping guy but also a pass rusher as well um and then when you talk about the pass rushers and you go to the edge Michel Williams making the move back from defensive end to more of an outside linebacker where he's going to have some more flexibility more ability to play with his hand not in the dirt and I think that we're gonna see Georgia try to unleash him a little bit Damon Wilson going into a second year Chaz Chell is somebody that has been around the program and and knows what it takes to play uh that outside linebacker spot especially on these early Downs where you're a run stopper and not as much of a pass rusher they feel really good about what they've got with that linebacker group as for as far as Transfer Portal transfer portal goes uh the spring window open right now do you see Georgia targeting uh any specific position looking to bring any guys in after they've been through after they've been through spring practice in their spring game to kind of evaluate yeah so georg's lost two to the transfer portal so far um that that has them right around that 85 number which we all know is imaginary anyway um that so they they as you look at George's roster they really did a good job of addressing their needs in that earlier transfer portal they addressed wide receiver very heavy and got three guys they addressed tight end and and got somebody to go out and replace Bowers they addressed running back and and got a you know go-to Workhorse type guy in in etn um safety and defensive line were two positions that you've got some you wanted to build some depth up up front and you've got an open spot in the secondary both those are spots that if the right guy came in they absolutely would Target them now defensive line I think you're hearing everybody in the country say hey if there's a really good interior defensive lineman you know Circle that guy for for XYZ School Circle that guy for ug but they're gonna have a lot of competition to get that guy um where I think Georgia is probably going to show the most interest in this spring portal would be at the quarterback spot and it's not because they need a starter we we talked about Carson Beck but it's because they need depth they have three scholarship quarterbacks right now and a lot of it goes back to that class of 2023 where they came up empty-handed they went all in on Arch Manning and did not land Arch Manning as their quarterback for that class they came up empty-handed they were fine at that point but when you lose Brock Vandergriff and you try to go sign two quarterbacks in the class of 2024 you had Dylan rayola and you had Ryan Pugi committed and ready to roll and then the week of Signing Day Dylan rayola flips Georgia did not accomp you know meet its goal of trying to sign two quarterbacks to get to that four scholarship quarterback quota that they've got they went out and they tried to add in that winter transfer portal with Jaden mava a UNLV transfer who ended up was briefly committed to Georgia but then ended up at USC they missed there the one the guy that I would Circle for Georgia and it's out there where he is potentially going to visit Georgia this coming week is is um is uh not Jaden my um Jaden rashada sorry Jaden rashada for Georgia in this second uh transfer portal cycle from Arizona State um a a highly coveted player coming out of high school again we're not talking about somebody that would be Georgia's starting quarterback that is going to be Carson Beck but they need to have some depth with gunar Stockton not having a lot of experience and Ryan Pugi being a true freshman that was very banged up this spring I mean he he went through about half of the spring practices before they had to shut him down with a knee injury you just want to have a little bit more comfort in your quarterback room especially when you've got such an inexperience with those two guys bringing in a guy like Jaden rashada would be so so big for Georgia that's the position that I would Circle the most for the Bulldogs in this spring portal cycle
