faithful ready to go here in Morgan Town and boy do we have a fun one ahead top 10 team Target on their back going on their Road and right into the snake pit as we see the number seven team in the country the Penn State NY lions taking on a team from the Big 12 the West Virginia Mountaineers glad to have you with us for EA Sports college football I'm Rees Davis David Po and Jesse Palmer with me in the booth guys we are ready to te it up the N Lions will kick it away to start us off he'll bring it out it's Fox rolling the dice to bring it out of the end zone did not work out as he stopped at the 13 so the West Virginia Mountaineers will have some work to do after that short return here he comes and obviously defense is always going to be aware of a quarterback but boy he finds a way to put defenses on their heels all the time David I mean what can't he do he's got the weapons he's got the confidence he's got the experience Jesse these kind of guys are so hard to defend you're right they better be able to find a way to get pressure on him because if they don't this is going to be a long day good spot after that seven ydd pickup on first down it's second and three they'll go to the counter play and this one will be stopped for No Gain how about the defender being a heat seeking missile he was on radar lock he found the football and flew down with some bad intentions third down and they'll need two on this initial Drive of the game [Applause] quarterback on the keeper that just never had a chance as they controlled the middle of the field and stopped him in the back field on third down fourth down well this defense knew that they were going to be seeing some option in this game and right now everybody's doing a nice job playing their assignments on the third play of that drive they were expecting it and everyone communicating and all rallying to the football that was nice to see if you're the coaching staff makes him move returns like that are why you don't settle for the fair catch if you don't have to picks up just a little bit of yards to help out the O so the Penn State nany Lions offense will try to get something started with their first possession here are our impact players for this game and it goes beyond executing an assignment to make an impact in the game yeah obviously we were talking to both coaching stats this week and we asked them who needs to step up and play while they immediately pointed to these guys right here here they are the key for their respective teams yeah and they don't always show up in the Box SC but these are the guys are the leaders these are the guys getting everybody organized and have to play well for their team to succeed after the productive first down play it's second and six the give to the back wrestled to the ground after picking up the first down man they have got a weapon in this offense right there at running back this dude is tremendous you think about Franco Harris you think about kajana Carter Curtis Enis saquin Barkley time and time again Penn State running backs wearing defenses down this guy is a problem and this defense better find a way to slow him down on the run it's Singleton and a good solid pick up for the defense Cuts him down nice run there on first down you know this is a running back that gets better as the game goes on so they're going to want to make sure they keep feting him the football let him get lathered up solid pick up of four on first down it's second and [Applause] six they'll see if they can find some Running Room on the right here open space of the 25 and they'll finally bring him down after he rips off a huge play I think it's really important for this offense they get this guy going early in the game and they're doing a nice job of that right now remember he's the kind of running back who gets better as the game goes on that's a really good omen for this offense considering his success now early the NY lions are moving quickly down the field on the option and he'll pick up one it brings up second and nine the big defensive tackles in the middle they're not always the best pass rushers but they are strong and I say Country Strong when they put their hands on you you feel it that lock of people out on the line of scrimmage they create separation they wrap running backs up and usually they don't get out of theid of those touch pass on the run a 6yd pickup that leaves him with third and four man this guy is exciting to watch when he has the ball in his hands he can make magic happen they're going to throw it to him they're going to hand it off to him they're going to get him the ball in a variety of ways and they're doing it early in this game not a lot of ground to cover in not much to defend a big third down in the red zone and that's incomplete a Defender all over him knock the ball to the ground fourth down coming up third and short in college football today you see so much more pass than you used to the offense stays aggressive and I think they stay aggressive because they know they're in field goal range they got that three in their back they'll have to settle for a field goal attempt oh the attempt is no good and after the Miss guys the score stays right where it is well everybody in the stadium thought that was an automatic three not so fast bad Miss by the [Music] kicker West Virginia hasn't the offense ready to go to work the last time we saw this offense we had to look quick it was a three and out Jesse he just had no ribon in that last drive so someone's going to have to St got a lot of running room and they'll move the chains and get it to the 47 yd line first West [Applause] Virginia the Mountaineers are in the hurry up wants to throw on first down off the play fake gets away got out of trouble got rid of it my God those two failed to make the connection it's an incomplete pass how about the quarterback there buying a little bit of time little Houdini act breaking the tackle breaking the sack maybe now you want him to get his eyes back down field and try to make a play but the pressure definitely sped him up and forced the incompletion couldn't make the connection on first down now here on second out of the gun the give to the back and the Freshman does a great job you using his technique in getting the man on the ground defense has dominated the early part of this game and the stats point that out emphatically sometimes you see the offenses sort of settle in areas to probe after that first quarter on third down going up top got him down field and they reacted well to the completion but it was too late to keep him from getting the first down great job by the offense listen if the defense is going to sit back in zone you know what you got to do run those crossers across the formation those guys that they looking at the quarterback they're not trying to pick up receivers all the time make those precise throws right in those holes get those first down get those big chunks they'll ride the running back and leave it with him he'll give him a couple on that one second and eight coming up now that's what you try to do as a defense limit those damage when they run the football get them on the ground short gains to set your defense for positive situations down the road after picking up a couple it's second and eight to throw it's green unloads to the wide out nice defensive way to get a hand in there and knock it away defense were always trying to get some tips you know break on the football get a tip get it up in the air nice job by the player breing on the football and force the incompletion after the second down misfire looking at a third and eight from the gun wants to pass quickly complete he's right out of bounds but a big play on that one and it'll be a first down there's a reason third down is called the money down what a great find by the quarterback great job finding his receiver at the end of the game you look at third down percentages it tells a huge story and it goes a long way in deciding who wins a football game comes out throwing on first down trying to get rid of it hit hard just as he released it on first down and just couldn't get it to the receiver doesn't take this defense of time to get to the quarterback man they've got speed all over the place they hit him so quickly and because of that the ball Falls incomplete offense gets set for second down misfired on the last play they'll go back to the air nowhere to go the ball's loose and the defense got it you know as quarterbacks you've got to be good in the pocket even when things are collapsing and you've got guys swiping at it you got to have two hands on the football didn't do a really a good job with ball security there and that led to the fumble the NY Lions going back to work on offense now we talk about settling for points but sometimes when you have to settle for nothing David it can be demoralizing yeah it can definitely be frustrating and I think it leads you to say maybe I go for it more but Jesse I think this off just needs another drive together and just finish over yeah and and be a little bit less predictable too especially as they get closer and closer down end didn't get much on first down it's second and nine quarterback Quick Pass to the receiver the defense wouldn't let him loose and even though it's in completion they lost yardage got to give the defense credit watching film anticipating they knew that offense had this play in their back pocket they knew about the speed of this wide receiver in different ways they were going to try to get him involved everybody on defense on the same page playing together I love it fires left a strike down field plenty of room on that play and they find their way to the 36 well I think on that play you saw why this guy such a big weapon in this offense that receiver he does such a nice job with his routes he's patient and he's consist and he's got put a lot of balls on the ground nice job there picking up the first down the NY Lions will line it up on First and 10 they'll run it from the gun and I think they'll give him two on that one second and eight coming up and a lot of times you want those big plays you want those Splash plays but sometimes you're going to take some losses you're not going to run the football overly well but if you continue to run you can at least create you at least have the threat of it otherwise you're just going to abandon it and now it's just going to be a passing game we'll take a quick break as we have reached the final two minutes of the first half let's see what they've got on second down back to pass it's Allard receiver looks it in it's complete he's really close to that first down marker but they stop him just a short I throw a little hitch route nice job getting the ball out of his hands quickly wide receiver quarterback nice job being on the same page nice complet some nice catch if they don't pick up this third down let's see if they trust their field goal kicker after the Miss on the last Drive gets it out fast finally run out of bounds but he has this offense rolling with a first down wow and what a great job by that quarterback finding his open receiver on third down you know guys one of the most telling stats at the end of the game G is third down conversion percentage if you're a great third down team it's invaluable to your offensive success and that's why teams drill third down so much in practice trying to cap this drive with the pass fires into the end zone and he was trying to pay off this Red Zone opportunity but it's incomplete you simply don't see that very often quarterback of this guy's caliber missing a guy wide open in the end zone he makes those throws in his sleeve and looks as if theyve buzzed down replay wants to have another Peak at that last play and you know the standard is indisputable video evidence and the officials will change the call and the extra point is good and it's seven nothing personal fouling the kicker defense the officials offer the deal and the coach accepts it they will take the penalty they were able to get a field goal on the board and now they'll kick it away not going to get a return here they'll bring it out 25 kick off sails through the back of theend Zone they'll throw it on first down grabbed in the middle it's white a timeout is called as this offense tries to find a way to get more points on the board before the half this offense has a second down play he's looking to throw grab near the marker it's Robinson and he's brought down at the 40 yd line and that'll be a first down and I think this receiver's Forte is his route running he's a guy that can line up all over the field but it's not just catching post routes and goes this guy can run shallows he can run Slants he can run the option routes and find soft SPS in the defense this guy really has all the routes in his toolbox wants to throw on first down got it in the middle it's Hinton good pick up there as he gets the first down they'll Mark him at the 48 that's a really good example of why offensive coordinators script plays you know the down and distance and you know which routes can get you to the stick so there's no Wast of time that coordinator got the play in early to his quarterback knowing that his players were going to be able to execute dropping back it's green he's got his man across the middle really nice pick up on that one as they get it to the 36 it'll be first down and a really good job by the quarterback being very decisive he saw his match up he went for it he attacked it got the positive game I would say he's going to find that guy a few more times today this first half of offense won't go on the Highlight re so far but starting to get things moving it's first and 10 there's a time out on the Feld F tight game here late in the first half and I think you're seeing these guys in every offense now these little guys that they're so quick it's hard to get a hand on them run crisp routs you can throw it short you can throw it long but they're just big time Playmakers you definitely seen an emphasis shift towards smaller wide receivers with some serious skill tackle is made but not until he gets the first down well they pick up the firstand Zone coverage I think a big part of this for young quarterbacks out there is if you're going to be throwing into Zone coverage you got to throw on time you can't stare down receivers because the entire defense has their eyes on you so you can't Telegraph where the ball's going you've got to hold it to the very last possible second try to freeze Defenders with your eyes and then throw the ball into open areas of the field anticipating where your guys's going to be great coverage great break on the ball had a chance to really make a big play and maybe even take that thing back to the house but you got to secure the catch we like to hit people more that we like the catch balls time dwindling away as they try to put points on the board right before the half off the play fake and he's got it touchdown Mountaineers and the passing game comes through man and we need more of that in the second half an extra Court away from tying this football game you Trail a little bit in the first half stayed calm this passing game can continue to heat up look out for second [Music] half ready to try the point after extra point and it's up and good 76 yds on the drive for the touchdown and they finish things off with a 21 yd touchdown pass after that latest answer tied things up just about set to kick it away again he'll bring it out from inside his own 10 nice job executing all of the assignments as they put a stop to that return at the 22 and we don't expect to see another play here they just take a knee and head to the break all tied up that's going to wrap up the first half here and now we join Kevin with the halftime update all right fellas the end of a very intriguing first two quarters of football in Morgantown it's been very evenly played through two quarters both teams have been physical both teams have battled there in the trenches either has been perfect but they're both right there in this game and it's kind of the Cal before the storm each side sort of licking their wounds right now but expect another fight in a flone booth in this second half with that said let's send it back to the guys at Mountaineer field and we're all square as he's set to kick it away on the run from inside his own five he was looking for some Running Room but not much to be found as he stopped at the 18 and state sends the offense back onto the field and then a lows scoring game like this one David every possession is magnified and I think more than anything it just gets frustrating and you got to put that behind you you got to see what this defense has been doing to be so successful caller now use it against yeah David I think for a play caller this is tough right it's like you have to get the perfect play on just to get a first down in these types of games I think you're just trying to get guys out in space see if a dude can break a tackle maybe that generates an explosive play and it breaks this trend that's caught it's Saunders and he was loose and in the open field and on his way a tremendous pick up on that one the nitty Lions want to pick up the tempo Jet Sweep pass and he won't quite get there but boy after that pick up just a few inches to go for the first an array of possibilities here well in that down in distance you're probably expecting him to throw it way down the field to get the first instead they go push pass and they did catch the defense off guard and even though that was a big first play David they still didn't have enough yards to get it well and catch me off guard as relative that's what you would say the offensive player I would say listen we're playing a little bit deeper because we're not going to give up a first down we react to the short stuff and obviously that's a quick easy pass from the offense we rally up make the play Live to fight another day and the nitty lions are flying down the field leaves it with the running back we'll give him a couple on that one second and eight coming up that's a really good job by the defense wrapping them up getting them on the ground take away that run game make them onedimensional put him in passing situations really good job by the defense picked up two yards on that last one they need eight on second down the give to the running back from the shotgun he get it down to the 35 before he stopped 10yd pickup on the play and it's a first down and a great job by the offensive line you're going to run the ball right at the middle you better control the line of scrimmage you can see the center the guard the tackles doing a good job getting on their guys just enough where this running back can get into the space and make the big game they'll leave it with him they knock him down inside the 30 at the 29 it's a pickup of six coaches always harp about staying ahead of the chains and when you can run with that type of efficiency on first down man you are doing just that got six on first down now a lot of options on second and four the run from the shotgun they'll make the Stop and he gets four on the play balls at the 25 and you know when we talk about great third down defenses it really starts with them getting stops on first and second you've got to get those stops early in the drives to set up third and long so that's a missed opportunity on that second down this defense keeps it on the boot bag looking to throw fires to the wide out he CAU it touchdown P State and that one will put him up here in the second half one of the reasons this offense is so exciting to watch they've got guys that are dangerous after the catch if this quarterback gets through his progression dve and hits you in stride these guys will take it to the house man it's your job to do the rest right you hit me in stride where I don't have to stop running I don't have to break down it makes it so easy the connection between quarterback wide receiver you can tell this is a good one and that's why they got six on that play he'll try to add another to their lead and the extra point is true and they're on top by seven they go 83 yd on the drive3 kick coming out with it it's Fox didn't find any crease in that kickoff coverage and he'll be stopped at the 17 West Virginia has it back ready to dive into that Playbook hand off from the shotgun hard running there he found a hole got about five he's down at the 21 listen that wasn't the greatest run world but it was very successful and you're making me honor the run and another thing every time you run the football someone gets tackled there's physicality involved in the game so I like when offenses commit to the running the football no matter what the outcome is because those body blows do add up right back to it maybe picked up a couple he's down at the 24 and the Mountaineers want to crank the tempo [Applause] looking to move the change they throw it complete to the left put it right on him sweet play good pick up and they'll move the chains with the first [Applause] downin we've come to the end of the quarter and it's Penn State on top three quarters are in the books time becomes a factor both are trying to hold the lead or cut into it as we take a look at the steps not only is the scoreboard on their side but so too is time as we open the FL going to run it it's white a strong tackle and WP up from the junior this is so nice to know you can start off on first down with positive play positive yards hand the football off set up a good second down got three on first down it's second and [Applause] seven they go to the draw and he found plenty of Running Room on that one before the defense was finally able to get him down great job by the quarterback the running back of the offensive line really selling that's step one if you're going to run an effective draw it's got to look like pass and then boom you sneak it right to the running back gets a big game and gets a first down back to pass it's green flips it out in the flat and the completion gives him a fresh set of downs and keeps this drive moving they might have the defense's headit spinning a little bit now hit him with a big run now they hit him with a big pass man it's so hard to defend both you know that which coverage do I want to put do I want to put more people in the Box to stop the run when you've got this kind of balance on offense the defense can't be right the give to the back and they're able to shove him to the turf as they stop him for a short gain this nitty lion defense has just been suffocating the front seven has been dominant guys like Jack ham would be proud yeah just big physical just owning the guys up front Nowhere to Run no nowhere to hide the Penn State D line just dominating this football now the play fake throws to the wide out complete to the left he will step out of bounds but not before the big pick up and a first down for this offense just outstanding execution continuing to work his way back through the football yeah and everything about this route looks vertical The Comeback it looks like it's a go I'm thinking speed and then he sets it down he puts the ball in the money and he makes the play running back searching for a hole a run up the middle is stuck for no game great team defense on that run play everybody doing their job people winning their one-on ones D lineman staying in their gaps linebackers and DB's filling just can't do it better got stuffed on first down it's second and 10 the offense showing motion from the tight end trying to get read on the D not a lot of daylight there let's give him one to the 14 boy they'd love to move the sticks here and take a shot at it on first and goal from the gun the ground game and he's not going to get there the defense Stands Tall and makes the stop at 11 YDC we've reached a two-minute warning and the defense needs to come up with a stop to close this thing out trailing by a possession they need to keep the ball they'll try to convert on fourth down he'll try to throw and pick up the first down he makes a catch in the end zone touchdown MERS great job with the score and listen right here at this point in the game there's still going to be time left my defense is going to have to make a stand regardless I'm going to kick the extra point cuz the field goal still beats me if I go for a two-p conversion now they'll line up for what they hope is [Applause] automatic and the extra point was good and we are all tied up in the fourth they put it in the end zone with a 12pl scoring drive and they finish it with an 11 yd touchdown guard we've got a Dandy going here all tied up in the fourth quarter about to kick it away here he comes from inside his own five really disciplined job by the coverage unit to get down there and make the stop at the 19 the NY Lions going back to work on offense now dropping back it's alard unloads to the wide out he makes a catch and chunk plays are the name of the game and they get one here before the defense finally makes the stop throwing the comeback looks like such a simple throw but the timing is so important and as a quarterback man this is all about trusting your guy you know exactly where he's going to sit it down you anticipate it you throw it you know he's going to come back and make that play for you fires to the wide out got his man to the left on the move 30 touchdown nitty lions and they grab the advantage taking the lead here in the four number what a great game tied late in the ball game who's going to make the big play they come up with it late Take the Lead nice execution it's hard to execute in these moments people get tight the score is tied late in the game I don't want to mess up but this offense doesn't worry about messing up they put the ball in the end zone and take the lead ling up to add another the extra point is good and now in the fourth they're up by a touchdown and an extra point that last Drive didn't take long just two plays to get it in and they Capp things off with a touchdown pass from 59 yd out just about set to kick it [Applause] away he'll bring it back from inside to SP nice job by the kickoff team everybody stayed in their lanes and they'll stop him at the 16 West Virginia has it and the offense ready to go to work there's plenty of time to work with here but they have to be highly efficient in their attack Jesse so it comes down to the quarterback position too Reese don't let the moment get too big play within yourself David because this guy's practiced the situation before no doubt use the sidelines they're your friend I don't have to take deep shots throw beyond the first down marker so I can stop that clock for a little bit and possibly use my timeouts hit hard as he released the ball on that first down pass and it never had a chance well no big surprise here in the fourth quarter the defense expecting pass and that's why they've got extra DBS on the field it's almost like a prevent look everybody back there staring at the QB going to be hard to throw into that obviously the ball Falls incomplete maybe a little frustrated after that last incompletion it's second and 10 from the 38 he's got his man and he was fortunate not to lose yardage on that play able to wedge it back to the line of scrimmage screen pass just not working there and you figure at this point of the game trailing you're going to have to be more aggressive and take some shots you usually run screen passes when you think there's going to be a blitz but because the defense has the lead they're just sitting back and playing big [Applause] zones looking to throw it's green throws to the wide out oh Fir and picked off and they'll drag him down after a good return on the interception he looked as if he thought he had it all the way in this junior makes a play that's a tough deal for the offense right I mean you're trailing it's late in the game you're having to throw the football you're just trying to make something happen and ball gets away from the quarterback ends up in the hands of a DB nice job by the defense linebackers moving trying to confuse the quarterback running out the clock seems to be a mere formality here as as they are ready to snap it in Victory formation [Applause] [Music]
