Snap Judgments: Ohio State shakes off early rust, rolls Akron in Buckeyes season opener

first impressions are what snap judgments are for and Ohio State gave its first impressions of the season right here in the Horseshoe on Saturday and it was a 52-6 win over akan that at times was a little bit tighter than that and then the Buckey pull away and win comfortably in the end so they are 1 and0 he's Jeremy Birmingham I am Austin Ward and sometimes burm we thought we talked about this we thought about it sometimes we struggle we get too hyperfocused on the negative yeah I don't want to do that I thought it was an opener they did have some nerves they were too amped up they were playing without two key seniors it took a while to get to find their footing I'm not trying to rationalize or Justify what happened but it to me came out just about the way that Ryan day probably would have wanted I mean the over under was 58 and a half right and there was 58 points scored in this game allio they gave up two field goals they didn't give up a touchdown defense I know there was some complaining that I saw you know with about pressure they had five sacks and 10 tackles for loss I don't know it's pretty good especially considering that they really rotated the defensive line a lot I mean Jack Sawyer and JT tuo while were out for like the second third and fourth series of the game so I thought they use this pretty much what we thought they would do is kind of as a scrimmage to get some things at least on defense offensively I Ryan Day made a point that I had not really thought about in the postgame press conference will Howard's first game here quinan Judkins first game here two three new interior linemen who had not played either at the position they were playing or had not ever played here before um Jeremiah Smith's first game Carell Tate's first start like there's a lot of things to the offense that I think you can look at and go well all right well I I'll I'll I'll I'm willing to give it a little bit of Grace to see how it unfolds will Howard's entire day might have been very different if Jeremiah Smith doesn't make a boooo on the second play of the game because that tunnel screen was a touchdown it was gonna be a 60 yard touchdown um as someone on Old predictions called a second play touchdown to Jeremiah Smith I not sure who that was I don't know did you did you talk to Jeremiah Smith about that after no no I didn't get a chance we we'll have to go back to the tape uh it didn't matter it didn't happen but um what also didn't happen is what I said in the pregame keys I wanted to see will Howard get that early throw under his belt just to feel a little bit of confidence he ends up starting the game 0 for four and you could sort of hear the murmurs in here people going oh no what are we getting and the statline for Kyle McCord today is not going to look altogether that Kord it's not going to look all that different from what kords was okay a year ago in the season opener where you're like I don't I don't know is that and then you watch will Howard in the postgame press conference and you're reminded why he's the quarterback of this team and so um you know I snap judgments has at times done what you said we we tend to lean into to the the bad stuff um because that's basically you're expecting Perfection at Ohio State and you're not ever going to get it but um let's do this this season we're just going to give a grade A Championship effort grade okay for the team and then we'll talk about the specifics Championship effort grade I thought the effort was Championship performance yeah I thought they played incredibly hard like the the mistakes they were making were were errors of aggression by and large there was a the a throw that comes to mind like Denzel Burke gets beat because he was trying to go for an interception and it was one of the longer uh gains of the day for akan finished with less than 190 yards of off yeah totally okay with that like no no issue some of the stuff that uh if we're hyperfocused on the defense like quarterback extending plays and and making some you know gaining some you some yards on the ground okay that happens sometimes you're going to overp pursue and give that up that was if we talked about Jim nolles a year ago like and Larry Johnson with the rushman was like well don't give up anything don't let the quarterback beat you the tradeoff is if you're going to get sacks and tackles for loss you are going to have to play more aggressive and sometimes give those things up like I thought it was okay especially if you have Arville Ree and sunny Styles and CJ Hicks trying to chase down the football at the next level and get the guy to the ground like by and large Ohio state did that those did not turn into explosive gains now this is Zan they're going to play better better athletes like Western Michigan will be better than West Michigan will be better better and then Dylan Gabriel is in you know uh game number six so that's that's stuff that can get better I the only let's break down the championship grade by offense and defense is that more fair than giving one comprehensive team grade I think I'm not I'm not concerned about anything that happened I do I think I would pin down and zero in on the offensive line I think they could have played better than they did if that is if they will have to play better by the time they get to Oregon by the time they play Iowa and certainly by the time it is uh Championship season and I think that they will but I can understand if there were people that want to come out of Saturday and feel skeptical about it Austin srael he's not going to be the starting left guard for this team I think there's probably a role I thought the reason that I'm actually not uh so Donovan Jackson I had this conversation in the Press Box with someone at halftime was like would they be would they be playing better if Donovan Jackson was out there I thought Austin seral was like probably the best performer on the offensive line in the first half so my answer to that would be like no because I don't think he was the problem so that means Josh frier and Josh Simmons are going to have to play better uh Tegra chabola and Carson hensman uh swapped some reps at times in the first half I thought Seth mlin was pretty fine they had a notable breakdown in communication uh but I didn't think that the rushing game looked as polished as it needed to be with blocking up front didn't think there was a ton of room for quinon Judkins to operate so some of the plays that will Howard had to make that showed his pois in the pocket uh were because pressure got to him I think uh more more quickly than it should have so out of everything that I saw today and we talked about it in the pregame keys I did not think that the offensive line quite met the championship standard for the opener did not absolutely I also thought it was very interesting however how different the Run game looked when trayon Henderson was out there versus quinch on Judkins and I don't that may go back to what Ryan day was talking about about that first game in the shoe Jitters pressing a little bit because trayon Henderson's played here three seasons already he knows what to expect and I thought he looked pretty incredible when he had the football in his hands and uh you know akan to their credit did a really great job keeping the ball away from Ohio State whenever Ohio State started to get a little bit momentum going offensively someone had a fake injury that happened like five times so there was an opportunity I think for Ohio State in the first half to really put the pedal to the metal and they didn't and I I I don't love what I saw from the offensive line but I'm not going to hyper react to it today if this happens again against Western Michigan a team that you have tape on from this season that's the other thing like you got nine months to prepare Joe morehead's a really good coach like I'm sure they had some wrinkles and things that they that they had not shown that something will Howard said in the postgame press conference like that's going to be a little bit different when you have a full offseason to prepare for one team um defensively akan didn't pass 100 yards till like I think the first play of the fourth quarter so I I don't I think they had negative rushing yards until like Midway through the third quarter so yeah their their backup quarterback who H state was not expecting to play against that was a dude's a freaky athlete that number 12 was pretty special athletically and that changed the game You Know Jack Sawyer I was joking like with uh one of Garrick Codge from 11 Warriors where Jack Sawyer like every time he hit the quarterback it was like in NCW 25 if you if you play the game you know what I'm talking about they have this this wear and tear meter like where the guy gets progressively worse yeah because he's just getting this butt kicked and there was a play in the second quarter where Jack Sawyer absolutely leveled the quarterback on an overthrow in completion and he got up and you could tell like in if this was the video game his entire body would have been red and it was like he was out but defensively again five sacks 10 tackles for loss three turnovers two touchdowns I'm fine with Denzel Burke taking a chance on on trying to pick off another pass I'm fine with CJ Hicks and sunny Styles in their first game at linebacker really full game overp pursuing on a on a quarterback that maybe they didn't really realize was that Shifty I thought the backup defensive tackles played great I loved what I saw on a kid McDonald so it my big takeaway is all the guys we talked about all off season arel ree Kaden McDonald Jeremiah Smith like they they were real yeah and that's really encouraging and my second takeaway is guys that we have glossed over a lot you know we talked a lot in the spring about AA abuka and how if he felt at times like people have looked past him because of JJ um whatever L and Ransom is everywhere on the football field and he actually uh like is different handles it differently than AA he is very much aware lean Ransom that people are overlooking him and he doesn't like it he talked about it again in his post game press conference on Saturday night it was like the first thing he said was I hadn't been out in the game since October cuz I thought laan after some of the plays he was making and not just the touchdown he was as demonstrative and emotional and passionate as I've ever seen him not that he didn't have that before but like even just a relatively routine tackle I thought that he was celebrating that in a way and I was like is that because you haven't played since October or because of what you were talking about because he brought it up unprompted like that he felt overlooked and that people were talking about everyone else on that defense he's like it's just all those things like it's coming out of the emotions were coming out of him and he's like they were coming out of him in the postgame press conference like he was getting emotional just talking about that and the fact that he gets into the endzone almost dropped the fumble recovery he couldn't believe that that was happening um we have tried to talk about lean enough but maybe not to the level that he deserves and it's a national conversation it's not just a a regional one it's a kid that has had multiple season ending injuries and you know Caleb DS is the shiny new toy and he was fine he played a good game he didn't do it you know but L Ransom played a spectacular football game um arll ree like you watch that and you're like okay yes that's what a yes that's what an Ohio State linebacker is supposed to look like when akan and I had a little like Joe Mo had flashbacks to 2021 Oregon when they just kept running the same he was running the same thing and the buck guys were not adapting to it because that's all you could you can't stop a pass behind the back you know the line of scrimmage but there were a couple times when arv ree like took off on on a beline to the sideline and made plays and that's where you're like okay that's what you know the the difference in the defense this year is going to be just the athletic nature of the linebackers is going to allow you to do some things that you haven't been able to do last few years and it's not a knock on Tommy or steel who are very solid players but arll Sunny CJ even Cody Simon like they are different athletes this was not training camp what Aral ree did today he he's not going to play ahead of Cody Simon when Cody Simon gets back out there we think that that could be by next Saturday evening against Western Michigan Arville re simply has to have a role for this team like I don't think there's any if ANS or butts about it no and I don't think the good the good news is it seems pretty clear that his position coach feels the same way because he was out there a lot he was out there early and he was out there late even like when you know they put pton Pierce out there it was arll at the mic and letting him do the things to to run the defense so that's a really encouraging sign for a player that everyone knew when he got here was freaky athletic but there were some questions about how quickly he was picking up this scheme and it seems like that is clicked all right what did you make of will Howard's de debut overall I mean you know you look at his stats at the end of the first half and he was what 10 eight of 18 or something 48% in the game he was eight of 10 in the second half much more confident I I really was waiting for them to push the ball down the field because you knew a and that's what I said on B bold predictions like akan has never played against Jeremiah Smith they cannot stop him you cannot double team him so because of mechaa and Carell Tate and Bryson Rogers and Brandon in so just throw it down there like Chip Kelly told us it was the F it throw it to JJ play so like you know so f it so f it and throw it to JJ and then he did and even that throw was not a perfect throw if he leads him three yards it's a walk-in TouchDown for for Jeremiah but the ability to extend plays is something that Ryan day has been really really looking for at the quarterback position we saw the glimpse of that with CJ Strat at the end of the at the Georgia game at the end of his career did not see that at all last year and you saw today a playmaker at quarterback kudos to Traen Henderson for paying attention because it's 17-3 and it very well could have been 1710 heading into half with akan getting the ball to start second half because will Howard made one really stupid play but other other than that one stupid play I don't think it was anything other than what I expected 230 some yards passing three touchdowns 50 plus yards rushing like the kid's going to get better he's never going to be a he's not going to be Andrew Luck in the pocket throwing the football like he's not that guy he's not John Elway but he is going to continue to get better and I think you can have an argument like is he is Kyle McCord a better passer than will Howard in a perfect pocket with everything unfolding exactly the way you want probably so like if you're going to look at this team and this performance and say how different is this team than last year right because I think that's what a lot of people are going to be oh the same old Buck guys they don't look like they care they're but it's the little things and again the postgame press conference if you haven't watched it we had it live on on the podcast please watch it and you'll understand why will Howard has captivated this team and is the leader that he is I think some of Will Howard would want some throws back some certainly one key decision he would want to do that over and and eat the football rather than almost give away a touchdown right before halftime I all those things are part of the evaluation I think that's fair but some of the the talk about his arm and his his arm Talent like I I don't know that he's getting enough credit for it he may not be John Elway uh but I think the the second touchdown to Jeremiah Smith off of you know I think he called it the peak concept there RPO look it's over the linebackers it is pinpoint it was good coverage on Jeremiah Smith from the trailing corner like it that ball was perfect he can do that I'm not saying that 100 like all 95 out of 100 are all going to go to that exact same point like there may be some things that he can do uh better that other quarterbacks might be more consistent with their accuracy but it is not as if he is incapable of doing that that was a tight window a great throw great look great read everything about that was executed perfectly I kind of thought we talked about it in the keys like I didn't really want them to come out just like hey well throw this screen and get your confidence going like he didn't really get a downfield throw like the one that he had to Jeremiah Smith in the third quarter like that was the first time that they really took one of those shots they I think they were trying to dial one up there when the protection got uh blown on that third down no they had J Jeremiah one that they was they were absolutely going to throw to him in the second or in the first quarter yeah and he got the protection fell through but I think that even if you're just looking statistically there were there were three drops that hurt him again it's not not excuse making not not you know that happens um his numbers could have looked a lot different than they than they wound up being which were still more than good enough for Ohio State to win games and to win comfortably he didn't get rattled he didn't lose confidence uh he had a couple L of The Crossing route to mechaber he layered in really nicely he had Carnell Tate on a on a curl concept that was thrown perfect like timing was great there's a lot of things he did well he's going to get better um but as we said all week and in the pregame Keys like it is different when you step out here and for that first 18 minutes of the game the crowd was active into it and then 17 to three and half and half the students decided to leave which I just don't understand for the life of me and I'm not going to make this a negative show I'm not going to to say the fans here are sometimes entitled but when half the students leave at halftime that in it's 17 to3 in the season opener on an absolutely pristine day I'm a little bit confused I knew it was going to happen you held it in long enough let it out it's fine it's fine just just don't just sell your tickets to people who want to be at the game if you're not going to come to the game and and be involved that's all the game was not ever in doubt and I can what did you think of Ryan Day postgame when he like he said Chip Kelly called a great game like six times and you could just tell he was aching inside to say I want to still call plays but I I'm not allowed I'm not going to and it hurts I was uh watching Ryan Day on the sideline way more demonstrative than I way more than I ever have before uh he was fired up and look I think if that's what that's one of the things that we talked about bur was like if if he doesn't have to be on the headset talking about what the next play call is I think he's going to be more engaged in the game and I I definitely felt like he was not conversations after Ohio State's last touchdown Gabe Powers catching the deflected ball taking it in for a touchdown there was a weird wonky situation where a akan is running on somebody late for the extra point and Ohio State winds up taking the delay of game penalty this the game is over that made it 52 to6 he was still coming down there to multiple officials I rate and looking for an explanation about why they didn't reset the clock and and why that was on Ohio State saying we were ready we were ready they weren't why do you throw a penalty on us to do this that and that's one example that was when I was down there late but I was watching him with like some of the there was a formation penalty I think in the second quarter he was losing his mind and that was who was that the extra guy in the back field on that play I think it was Jeremiah but uh I don't know if I don't remember if they said it or not there too many guys in Five Guys in he was yelling at Jeremiah so I think it was and then there was another penalty in the fourth quarter when Devon Brown was out there and he had a very exploitive filled TI raade towards number 33 saying what are you doing get your guys together so he definitely seemed engaged and that that's the hard thing for me like in a game like this you start to see the players on the team in the fourth quarter getting a little bit loose and and having a good time and the coaches are still coaching their asses off and like you can be like H you can take a deep breath but like they can't if you want to win in a championship if you want to be the best team in the country and you want to be the team that everyone's talking about and all of the the pressure that's on this roster this year like the coaches have to do that and I'm glad Ryan Day and the coaches were doing it but I I'm so glad the players were able to have fun I I think that also plays into like a decision to go forward on Fourth and five and having full faith in the defense I just I think that he knows which is why he made this move and he's been talking about it for several years like what that would mean to let go of the play calling and what he can do from a big picture perspective I thought there were a handful of decisions that were made throughout the game where you could tell like maybe Ryan Day wouldn't have done that previously if he was thinking about you know what do I need to call on Third and five or like even like it felt like he had fought ahead they had what third and seven and they ran it with trayon like set up fourth and five he'd already thought ahead this was the situation maybe chip will call something that works maybe not but he had already decided he was going to go for it in a four down territory situation like those are the little details that I noticed for the opener for him that I think bowed well for this decision down the road yeah and those are the little details that will Howard will get better at because it's Fourth and five you don't throw the ball three yards downfield to a guy that's covered you know so like there's those are things that happen I I I it's 52 two to six again defense you went negative again at the end defense put up a lot of really good numbers I they scored two touchdowns in aan scored zero right so there's nothing to complain about so it's it's about building Western Michigan is going to be a better team we watch them on Friday Night play neck and neck with Wisconsin who you know it's at Wisconsin that's not an easy spot to go play yeah um you know Ohio state will not be able to they won't allow themselves I think to have the same like Slow Burn in the first half that they did today but again you're going to see teams do what akan did the teams that are out matched they're going to try and bleed the clock they're going to try and slow down Ohio State's offense any way they can whether it's faking injuries like akan was or something else but the Buckey are just going to know Chip Kelly's first game calling plays here it it's so many things and it's a 46o win and you know sorry for those who who took the Buckey to cover but I don't take taking any team to cover 50 is lot to ask for especially like this this is as you said that's is what Ohio State opponents are going to do even if they're going to go three and out they're going to take two and a half minutes to do it like you saw coming out in that third quarter like akan if they get a first down that means they get to keep the ball for five minutes so it was like 35 minutes of real time before Ohio State's offense got to go back out there like that's that's difficult you could you could see the offensive lineman right before that drive like they were doing real 100% drills on blocking you score in three plays and then the defense is back out there and then the defense scores and then you're like okay I think they ran 11 plays in the third quarter and scored a couple times and the game was over like that's I can understand if there are people out there that wanted to see that from the first quarter on but this was the opener Perfection is not going to be uh happening in those when you have nine months between when you play a real game and scrimmages are over it's it's great iron sharpening iron is is one thing but to go out and do it for real is different that's why you play games like this and I think that Ohio state will make the most of it I think they got what they needed other than Jeremiah Smith who obviously lived up to the hype James peoples there's there's something there there's something there he put the ball on the turf in the fourth quarter was immediately yanked and Sam Williams Dix went out there I like that again when I'm talking about Ryan Day and the coach is still coaching hard at the end of the game like that's a moment that I think will be very important for James peoples but you see the shiftiness you see the touchdown run um um I'm excited to see and I don't think quinon Judkins looked like the best running back in America tonight if we're being honest but um he's going to get loose and this team's going to be really good folks really good I think that's uh a fair assessment especially for uh week one which is in the books at the Horseshoe Ohio State 8 52 to6 winner over akan it was awesome to be back in here awesome to get the coverage rolling
